no. 38 November 2012 The community magazine for Ashgate, Brampton, Brookside, Holymoorside, Somersall and Walton. Cover picture by Christine Hall Chesterfield Photographic Society
Intro Tonight as I type, Austrian Felix Baumgartner has broken the record for the highest ever skydive. He jumped out of a balloon that was 24 miles high. It’s people like this that inspire me, I would never do it but I love people who do amazing things.
Festival Fever
I’ve also been pretty amazed by the Chatsworth Road Festival, it was great to see people come together to celebrate where they live, to support the businesses who took part and generally have a good time. I’ve some pictures from some of the events and just want to pass on my thanks to all who were involved in an event or attended one. We’ve also got pictures from the Holymoorside Scarecrow festival from the end of the summer, and an invitation to a Christmas Tree Festival at St Thomas’ at the beginning of December.
Christmas Is Coming
To help you put together your own Christmas list or your shopping list for others we’ve collected some ideas from our local business owners, take a look at pages 24 and 26. There’re loads of interesting shops in the area and it’s worth having a nosey around for ideas, our local businesses will be much more appreciative of your money than the shops in Meadowhall or on the High Street, and they’re much more likely to spend and reinvest that money back into our community than the high street chains are.
Going Social
This month we’ve made an intrepid attempt to join the world of social media - we’ve set up on facebook and twitter and have started tentatively to add comments/posts/ status updates, whatever you call them! about what’s going on in the world S40 Local. In the Facebook world, it all seems this is a bit of a waste of time if no-one ‘likes’ us! The whole ‘liking’ thing makes me feel a little like I’m back at school, so can I ask - in a really grown up way of course - please will you be my friend and ‘like’ S40 Local on facebook. Last point... inspiring people. I wouldn’t normally do this but there is a youtube video that lifts my spirits, want to see what a trials rider can do with Bradley Wiggins £10k road bike? Check out www. youtube.com/watch?v=7ZmJtYaUTa0 if you’re remotely interested. This video has been viewed 4.25M times within 5 days of being posted. Amazing bit of advertising! Till next month. Paul.

Chatsworth Road Festival 2012 Over the past year we’ve been gearing up for the second Chatsworth Road Festival and bringing you updates and information to give you the opportunity to participate - well it’s now November and the festival has been and gone!
T
he Festival was born during a conversation between a local resident and a Chatsworth Road shop owner, and we’re now two years and two festivals down!
Weekend One
The first events kicked off on Saturday 6 October, the sun shone again, (as it did last year), people came out and Chatsworth Road was a busy place. The Brampton Food Market at St Thomas’ Centre saw its best attendance ever with an amazing 1200 people. Cllr Shirley Niblock led a rendition of “Happy Birthday” to the market and the Mayor and Mayoress cut the cake and welcomed people in. Meanwhile Transition Chesterfield were outside pressing apples to make juice, entertaining the kids with the spiral apple cutter (it’s amazing how many apples kids will eat when they look like a helter skelter!) and the 3rd Brampton Scouts washed cars in the car park. Further down the road at Nonnas, cyclists gathered, dressed in their most dapper outfits for the Cycle Campaign’s ‘Cycle In Style’ event, enjoying a complimentary coffee from Nonnas, before setting off for the short ride along Chatsworth Road’s quieter cycle ways. Pots were thrown at JMJ (in a creative sense, not in anger!), Peppa Pig pottered around near Pooky, the Chesterfield Ferret Club’s event had many people to visit their furry friends, Palfreyman’s introduced people to music in trial lessons at their open day and the Manor Fields Association celebrated to the tunes of the Brampton Community Band... and these were just a few of the events from day one! Sunday was another fine day, Harvest Services started things off, the arts workshop got underway, Morris and Garland dancers performed and people took their afternoon tea at Mes Amis whilst the sun continued to shine. As the week progressed late night shopping at Libby’s was a great success, ‘Me Mam says, Me Dad says’ was performed at the Peacock Inn and people took advantage of some great offers made by local businesses throughout the week. Chatsworth Road Festival 2012
Select Interiors & The Chatsworth Road Festival Select Interiors of Chatsworth Road ran a Rug Design Competition in conjunction with Brookfield Community School Art & Textile Department. The results were announced in their store on Sunday 7 October. John Rhodes (proprietor) explains “The judging took place in London, was undertaken by a professional rug design team and the results are as follows: In first place Sheena Ryder, second place Lydia Edwards and third place Laura Piper. Congratulations to these three, and indeed to all the entrants, this was not an easy decision for the judges who were highly impressed with both the quality and variety of all the entries.” We enthusiastically look forward to seeing the winner’s finished rug, which is currently being manufactured in India and will be featured in a future edition.

Weekend Two
The second weekend saw the sun out again! The Zion Church hosted their Mini Market for the second year, street entertainers served unsuspecting customers at Lambarellis, people strolled around the Walton and West Green Walk, people joined Brampton Brewery for their tour, Mes Amis hosted ‘Allo Allo’ and on Sunday Koo held their Food Festival. Events drew to a close with a Thanksgiving Service at St Thomas’ Church bringing together churches in our area under one roof to celebrate our community.
Apologies
Opposite: Dancing outside Mes Amis; Winning Rug Design selection at Select Interiors; Entries for Minuteman’s Poster competition by Old Hall Junior School pupils; this page; Pot Throwing at JMJ; Stylish Cyclists; Art Workshop at St Thomas’ Centre and Glass Fusing at Harleys Interiors.
I apologise now if I’ve not included your event but there really was so much happening that it is impossible for me to cover it all. What I do know is many people enjoyed themselves and got involved in a Festival that celebrates where they live and the community they are part of. If you’ve got photos of events that you’d like to share, please email them through and I’ll set up a gallery on our S40 Local facebook page. Here’s to the third Chatsworth Road Festival in 2013 - if you’ve got your 2013 diary yet don’t forget to pencil it in - for the 5 to 13 October 2013.
A huge thanks to the Chesterfield As one of the organising committee members and on behalf Photographic Society members, of the committee I can’t thank people enough for setting up Ken Davis, Christine Hall, Des such a fabulous range of events, and I must thank each and Haslam and Simon Fawley for every one of you who attended and got involved. their photographs of events.

There’s something in the woodshed?
Heathscapes celebrates 20 Years in business at Holymoorside. The day I went to meet Philip and Philippa Heath from Heathscapes was one of those occasions that makes me realise why I love my job, it’s simply about meeting great people who do interesting things.
I
’ve never needed wood to fuel my wood burning stove as I don’t have one. However if I ever do have one I know where my fuel, or dry firewood logs (as they are known in the trade), will be coming from.
Tucked away at the back of Holymoorside down a small lane off Harewood Road is Cat Hole Mill and Dye Works of Holymoorside. This is where Heathscapes runs from, a small family business with strong community and environmental ethics. They have been in business here for 20 years this year, but the yard they operate from dates way back to the 19th Century. It was here that the cotton dyeing for the factories took place, and where they dried the timber they felled to keep the water supplied by the river Hipper clean to supply the dye works. The felled wood was stored here and dried in
covered, sheltered stores until it was used as fuel for the Dye works. The purpose of the yard changed from dyeing to timber and forestry use in the twentieth Century under the ownership of Robinsons. And what I love is the fact that the place is still being used for the same purpose by Heathscapes today. Sheltered by a few great Sycamores that must shudder every time an axe falls or a wood saw starts up, the yard is stacked with timber that’s cut and aged, or seasoned, for at least 18 months before being sold. I’d no idea about wood fuel but Philip explained, “our seasoned timber is dried for at least 18 months, being rotated around the stores carefully to ensure it slowly loses its moisture which makes it better for burning. Logs are categorised by type and energy value, so you can be assured of getting the right type of log for your stove or fire.” “Green timber, or just cut wood, has a high moisture content of between 40 to 60%, summer dried has a moisture content of 20 to 25% and seasoned timber, such as we supply, 10 to 15%. This means the timber is twice as efficient as fuel so will burn longer. You can also buy kiln dried timber also available with a similar moisture content, but to me this seems inefficient as you have used significant energy to heat the kiln to dry the wood out. As well as the increase in burn time, another huge advantage of seasoned timber is how cleanly it burns - green wood will soot up a chimney or flue very quickly, whilst seasoned wood will help keep your heat source operating cleanly and efficiently.”
Page 18 • www.s40local.co.uk
20dg%OeFF He Work
Philip went on to explain that there is an art to operating a wood burning stove, it’s not as simple as chucking some large logs in and creating a glowing fire! “I’ve heated my home and hot water and cooked with logs for over twenty years and will happily advise customers on everything wood fuel related”. Heathscapes can also build made to measure log stores, help with rotating timber and they have held sessions introducing people to stoves so they can share their wealth of knowledge with people keen to learn.
But it’s not just about firewood, they are also a small but highly skilled and experienced team of tree surgeons. Philip encourages tradition and supports local youngsters by providing work experience, apprenticeships and employment. As Tree Warden for the locality Philip is keen to see trees retained and maintained wherever possible and supports re-planting when tree removal is necessary. Working with the Parish Council and County Council he monitors work carried out on trees with Preservation Orders and liaises with the Planning Department on behalf of his clients when Tree Preservation Orders work is requested. And love of wood doesn’t stop there, Heathscapes is committed to making the most of trees, whether as living oxygen providers, carbon neutral fuel providers or as quirky pieces of decorative art work. Philippa loves to get creative as many pieces of wood shine again as bespoke indoor or outdoor decorations, decorative logs for empty fireplaces and shelves, wood mushrooms for seats, tables or kids’ play areas, huge beech blocks and tree stumps for log stools or a more contemporary look. “We can provide Woodsy Weddings or Woodland Themed Parties by providing silver birch name place settings, candles, vases, cake stands and lanterns, or even branch arbours for that romantic effect!” says Philippa, “We love anything that involves wood, we’ve provided everything from hot charcoal for firewalkers to willow for cricket bats and are always happy to help.” Thanks to Philip and Philippa for taking time out to talk, and thanks for the cake and tea... and the smell of the wood burning stove. I’m also delighted that to celebrate their 20 years in business Heathscapes are offering S40 readers 20% off all hedge cutting - if you’d like to give them a try.
Philip is also involved locally as coaching the junior section U15s rugby players at Chesterfield Panthers, or cricket Coach at Baslow Cricket Club looking after the kwik, U11 and U14 teams. He helps out at Walton Holymoorside School with PE, runs the after school rugby team and has delivered the all important Christmas tree for the past twelve years! He’s also the Holymoorside Scouts Chairman and a Cub Leader. Famous locally for the scout powered hog roast! A busy man.

Take a look down in the
Beer Cellar. The latest addition to Brampton Brewery’s estate.
B
rampton Brewery has been brewing from Chatsworth Business Park at 172 Chatsworth Road since 2007, and although not running at the capacity of the original Brampton Brewery, which operated at the site Matalan now occupies, today’s Brampton Brewery now supplies 30 pubs, has two Brampton Brewery pubs, The Rose and Crown and The Tramway Tavern and its beers can crop up in pubs on the Isle of White through to the northern outreaches of Scotland. Chris Radford, Head Brewer explains, “we do beer swaps with other breweries so it’s great when we get a request to re-supply, keep an eye out as you never know where you’ll find Brampton Breweries beers next!” And they’ve just added another local outlet for you to try “we’ve recently taken on the unit next door to the Brewery and have opened it as the Beer Cellar. From these fully licensed premises you can now obtain bottled beers, carry out boxes, a new range of Brampton wines, whiskies and all sorts of brewery related accessories and gifts” explains Chris. The Beer Cellar is currently open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday but in the run up to Christmas will open on Saturdays through November and December. To compliment the beers and whiskies we’re selling Brampton wines - unfortunately, they’re not made here - “our climate isn’t quite up to producing the fruit needed for great wine, but we were approached from South Africa by the producers of these wines, after they’d found us on the Internet, and they asked whether we’d be interested in supplying them. Always on the look out for new and interesting projects,
Page 22 • www.s40local.co.uk
and with the new off-license up and running we sampled the produce and agreed to stock it”. The Brampton wines began as the playful ‘little brother’ to Rustenberg Wines, one of South Africa’s most respected Estates owned by the Barlow family (another local connection perhaps?) who have been farming wine in Stellenbosch in the Cape winelands for over 60 years - retailing at £7.99, it would be rude not to try this out. The new Brampton Brewery is a real local affair, it all started in 2005, following a discussion in a pub about resurrecting the Brampton Brewery. Chris Radford is the main man and runs the business, but behind the scenes are four other local residents and business men, who make up the four directors, Dave Hattersley of B Hattersley and Sons, Funeral Directors, John Frederick of Fredericks Ice Cream, Jon Leeming a friend of Chris’s and a lover or real ale and finally John Hirst, Chris’s brother in law, helped establish the venture and had the confidence to invest. It’s also John Frederick who is landlord at the brewery site. It’s great to see local businesses thriving and expanding, I wish the guys every future success. STOP PRESS: Just before we went to press we learned that the brewery has won two gold medals at the SIBA Midlands Beer competition held at Nottingham Castle, the awards went to Tudor Rose and Brampton Mild and both of these go through to the National finals. Brampton Mild also took bronze in the overall beer judging of the Midlands competition. Both Tudor Rose & Brampton Mild now go forward to the SIBA National Final, in March 2013 in Sheffield.

Stone The Scarecrows! The Scarecrow Festival 2012 Holymoorside.
I
f you took a drive through Holymoorside at the end of August, you might have felt as though you were being watched! And, those checking your progress were probably made of straw and originally used to scare the crows. But for two weeks of the year in Holymoorside, they’re dressed up in their finery to put on a show for those passing by. I’d assumed this was an age old tradition but when chatting to Sheila Cheesman and Jean Pratt, the scarecrow festival organisers, I learned that this was not the case! “I’d always wanted to do something community based during the Holymoorside Arts Festival” says Sheila, “so it was great to get the Scarecrow Festival off the ground back in 2003.” “Originally we ran the scarecrow festival during June, but about four years ago we decided that the Well Dressing, Fun Day and Scarecrow Festival should all be aligned to coincide with the school holidays during August.”
The whole thing is non-competitive and Sheila and her team of helpers hold sessions to introduce people to the art of scarecrow making a couple of weeks before the main event. This year there was an Olympic theme and many of the 50 scarecrows on display were dressed accordingly, covering an area from the top of Harewood Road and through into Walton. Planning has already started for next year’s event, Sheila’s group meet three of four times throughout the year and if you have practical skills Sheila would especially like to hear from you (call 01246 568130). In case you missed the festival, here’s a selection of the Olympic scarecrows from this year’s event. Page 30 • www.s40local.co.uk

Scarecrow festivals appear to be a relatively new celebration, the oldest event I can find evidence of is a man riding through the town of Romney Marsh dressed as a Scarecrow in 1964.

Climatic Chaos! Doreen Morton
“Let me set the scene at the Holymoorside Fun Day on Saturday 25 August. The Jubilee celebrations at the Recreation Ground had been rained off and it promised to do the same for the Fun Day. A few intrepid stall holders had set up their gazebos with an ice cream van and an enclosure with owls optimistically standing in.
“
The Village Hall bustled with stalls and demonstrations. The Kirkby Brass Band played and the Ladies Club were doing a roaring trade in cream teas. I took time out from washing up, donned my Wellies and went down the slope onto the grass to look round the stalls. By then a steady drizzle was wetting everything, even the owls looked fed up.
“Back to the washing up. A while later someone exclaimed “It’s hailing!” We looked out in disbelief to see marble sized chunks of ice hurtling down from the sky. Very soon a bank of hailstones had built up like snow, then a river of water began to flow down the slope by the hall door. And the band played on! “The people in the hall were oblivious to the plight of the stall holders outside who were frantically trying to cope with a deluge from above and below. “The hail fell over a small area around the Village Hall - it really did have to be seen to be believed. “Other areas in the village were flooded and there were many tales to tell. Rachel rescued some fish that had been washed out of a neighbour’s pond and were floundering about in her garden. Our scarecrow poised to dive into flood water swirling round our semi-detached houses (Ed: last month’s cover). Roads were under deep water, a wall and plants washed away. “A few hours later the water had drained away, the sun came out and operation ‘drying out’ began. “Would you believe it?”. Doreen Morton. Ed: We were in Eyam as the rain fell in Chesterfield, we didn’t get a drop, I did realise something had happened on arriving home as all the moss that used to be on our roof was now outside the front door! As a friend of ours says “this should never have been dubbed global warming, that sounds far too pleasant, it’s climatic chaos”. Did you experience problems with flooding in Holymoorside? If so there is a group of residents who would be interested to hear. So please get in touch and I’ll forward on your details.

Day Nursery with Natalie Johnson, owner. Deciding on care for your child is one of the most difficult and important decisions a parent can make. When you’re visiting a number of different settings it’s worth considering The Jungle at Sheepbridge, with a drop off and collection service, the location is not a problem.
N
atalie Johnson started The Jungle Playcentre and Nursery three years ago, located in a purpose-built setting, perfect for children’s development. Natalie was
keen to offer something fresh and new for Chesterfield. “We find that as soon as people walk through the doors they sign their children up. What we have here is unique in Chesterfield” says Natalie. And it’s not only the physical environment that’s important, it’s also the staff and carers. There’s a real mixture of people at the Jungle Day Nursery, Natalie has a Bachelor of Education (Hons) degree and Early Years Professional Status, and moved from teaching in Page 36 • www.s40local.co.uk
mainstream schools to run her own children’s nursery. The Nursery Manager Dawn, has over 20 year experience in the nursery sector, and the more newly qualified staff like Laura Masling the Assistant Manager and Kelly Taylor the Supervisor are both qualified to degree level in Early Childhood Studies. All other staff are qualified to Level 3 and above - you can be sure of a balanced team with well qualified leaders and time served skills, together with more recently qualified carers - resulting in many pairs of safe hands for your children.
The nursery is large and spacious (it does have the capacity to take 108 children) and mimics a school type environment from the start. “It’s important to create the right environment for young children, The Jungle Day Nursery provides many elements a child will experience when they start school” says Natalie. Children can start in the baby room - which cares for children
from 0 to 2 years, each room is filled with age specific toys and learning aids and run by dedicated staff who develop individual plans for each child. Each child also has an allocated key worker who will follow the child’s progress though the nursery right through to being involved in a final handover as a child leaves for school. The learning packs and information will be passed over to their school to ensure that the school knows about the child’s progress at The Jungle. From the baby room, at two years old, children move to
the toddler room where the toys and learning changes to help the toddler develop essential skills and the ability to interact with the world through playing with others, taking turns and fantasy play. Once a toddler reaches the age of three they move to the main preschool area and from three to five they learn to satisfy their needs of success, fun, freedom and respect which form the basis for healthy development and lifelong learning. This is in a separate room again with age specific equipment. There is a separate library (used by all age groups) with a wide range of books,
rotated to ensure children have a great choice. This room is ideal for one to one sessions with children and is a quiet relaxing place away from the hustle and bustle of the other rooms. There is an outdoor play area with “Billy Bounce” safety flooring, play frames, ride on toys, bikes, scooters, trikes, footballs, parachutes, bean bags etc. “We have included outdoor planting areas so children can see plants grow from seed and learn they need to be fed and watered to allow them to grow” says Natalie. “We also have Eddie, the nursery rabbit that children love to pet and take care of.” The nursery runs after school clubs, and holiday clubs for children up to the age of 12, these are run in a large room upstairs with lift access. On rainy days this large open room is used for “movers and groovers” sessions to ensure that even when it’s not possible to use the outdoor space the children get some exercise. Food is freshly prepared each day from a fully stocked kitchen and “We’ve invested in chairs so when children sit round the table in the dining area to eat they’re all at the same level, it’s great to see the babies develop, mimicking the actions of the more grown up children around them” says Natalie. Children’s security is important - CCTV, safety fencing, fob access systems, separate rooms for the different ages, which is also the case with the outdoor spaces to create a safe physical environment. There has been significant investment in technology. The rooms have school type technology, interactive white boards, new Toshiba laptops with age specific software, safe internet access and digital cameras for the children to use. As we mentioned last month, The Jungle have a minibus which is available for collection and drop off anywhere in Chesterfield, this can apply to any of the age groups and is used to collect children from school for the after school clubs returning them to home later on. The bus is always staffed, along with the driver and it is equipped with privacy glass - demand is high for this service.

“Overall it’s been good, there have been some difficulties but that is to be expected in any new business, however, we are looking forward to the next year” says Brenton, “we’ve met many people and it’s been very satisfying to see them come back again, recommend us to friends and generally see their favourable response to this new venture. News must be getting out there as people have travelled in from Sheffield and the outer regions of the Peak Park to dine with us.”

When I first met Rosa-Lynn, the building work was still underway but by the opening night all, but a few minor tweaks, was finished and they’d achieved their aim - to breathe life into this sadly forgotten and unloved building. hustle and bustle of the town centre is only ten minutes drive away, so rural and peaceful is the setting. Inside has a definite Art Deco feel, from the pictures in the bar and the detailing used through out the building such as the stylised doors and although echoing back to another era it is in many ways new and refreshing. “We are very pleased with the overall ambiance of the restaurant and bar, the design is very personal to us and we have had a very positive response from the S40 Local community, which is very gratifying” says Rosa-Lynn There have been changes over the year, especially to the menu, which changes seasonally and is created by Andrew Clark, Head Chef at Dragons Fold from the opening. Assisted in the kitchen by Josh Booth, Andrew creates and produces quality English cuisine with a modern perspective on some classic dishes. Asked to sum up what Dragons Fold is about the couple said their aim was to create a relaxing, comfortable place that was reasonably formal yet unpretentious that offered freshly produced quality English cuisine. Comfort during dining was important and this factor determined the choice of arm chairs in the restaurant. The bar area is relaxing and comfortable, again it’s a great place to enjoy a drink before or after your meal. I asked if there had been any
highlights or entertaining evenings that had been memorable during the first year, I was told that there had been some excellent party nights when the premises had been exclusive for events such as birthday parties, ranging from a 21st to an 80th and a 50th Wedding Anniversary party. These had been fun, relaxed evenings as the party mixed freely, old friends and family members caught up with one another’s news and gossip without worrying about disturbing other guests. With the Autumn season upon us Dragons Fold will be open on Thursday evenings so you can dine Thursday, Friday or Saturday evening. The Festive Menu starts on Thursday 29 November and includes Roast Turkey with smoked confit of Goose, Chestnut and Pistachio Fried Brussels, hot Cranberry Jelly and is served with seasonal veg, roast and mashed potatoes... and is priced very reasonably at £14.95.
Treat yourself this Christmas Day at Dragons Fold, they will be open for a five course lunch, for £60, between 12:30pm and 2pm, there are no “sittings” so the table is yours and you could have the pleasure of no cooking, being waited on and no dirty dishes! Open New Years Eve for dinner - diners are asked to be seated between 7:30pm and 9:30pm to enjoy five courses for £55 per person. If you and a group of friends, family or work colleagues want to celebrate, then Dragons Fold is the ideal place as the whole restaurant and private bar can be booked for the evening and caters for up to 36 people, call for details and to discuss menus. If you haven’t dined at Dragons Fold there are only a few weekends before Christmas and if you can’t make it why add it to your ‘must do’ list for 2013, you can be sure of warm welcome from Rosa-Lynn and Brenton.

Keep up to date on: www.manorfields association.co.uk
Manor Fields Association This is how Angela Fookes, Chair of the Manor Fields Association (MFA), describes the space the Association now owns, tucked away behind Ashgate Avenue, Ashgate Road and Old Road.
I
’ve noticed the gate at the end of a short drive opposite Manor Road, but never been up to see what’s there - unsure whether or not I should be there. That was until I met Angela and Leon and decided to go and visit Manor Fields for myself. The fields are managed by the Manor Fields Association, a committee of local residents, including Angela who chairs and Leon Hayward who got in touch with me. Leon’s relatively new to Chesterfield and works with a local Wildlife

Trust in his day job, so is well placed to help them achieve their aim of maintaining the fields in a conservation friendly way. “We’re very fortunate as our Treasurer is also a tree surgeon, we have a group of volunteers who get involved with the running and maintenance of the fields, plus we enjoy the support of around 200 local members”. With regards the biodiversity at Manor Fields there is an excellent mix of wildlife that thrives in the trees, meadow borders and open field, such as woodpeckers, owls, and bullfinches, amphibians and an increasing range of wildflowers. “We’re continuing to make small changes in how the land is managed which we hope will continue adding to the appeal”, explains Leon. “In addition to the conservation work we want to create a better open green space and see the
1995, when the school closed - a few years later the grass stopped being cut and the land was no longer maintained. As with any desirable land, in 1999 developers submitted plans to build 23 new homes on the fields, concerning many local residents. At this point a small group of locals got together to build a case to say why the development shouldn’t go ahead and made their representation to the council - the plans were turned down.
area used by junior sports teams. In previous seasons we have hosted junior football teams playing each week, but this year we don’t have anyone booked. If there’s anyone out there looking for a pitch for a junior sports team they should give us a call on 01246 208379. We’ve invested a lot of time and effort into improving the drainage on the pitch so there is a good surface for sports now.” Angela explained. The fields are also used by Old Hall School for occasional outdoor lessons. Pupils have helped with bulb planting, built log piles and insect hotels. Sheffield Hallam University MSc students have also used the fields for research and study.
Manor Fields
You may have used the space if you were at Manor School as it was their sports field until
The group expressed an interest in the ongoing future of the fields and formed the Manor Fields Association, and five years later in 2004 the fields were handed over and became the responsibility of the group, at a peppercorn rent for 25 years. Maintenance became the responsibility of the group, with some tasks bought in from the council. To enable them to raise the necessary funds MFA became a charity in 2007. The cost of the basic upkeep - grass cutting, care of the 200 trees on the fields (many with preservation orders) and insurances require them to raise around £1000 per year. The success of this relationship, with the fields being kept in great condition and made available for everyone, has recently led to the council passing ownership of the land to the Association. Angela explained that Chesterfield Borough Council’s support and confidence in the association, has put the land in the direct control of the local community. In 2004 the MFA held an audit of people using the fields. This found on average 30 to 50 people per day use the fields for dog walking, exercise or simply to sit and enjoy the peace and quiet offered by this urban escape space.
Community Space
The Manor Fields Association recently organised a Barn Dance for the Chatsworth Road Festival at Loundsley Green Community Centre to raise funds - the Brampton Community Band played and Brampton Brewery ran the bar making it a real local affair. Angela commented “We wanted to celebrate obtaining the fields and thank the local community who support us so well. We look forward to developing the recreational space that’s totally in harmony with the community around it.” The fields were also visited during Festival week when Councillor Shirley Niblock led the first Walton and West Green Walk taking people through our four local green spaces, Manor Fields, The Inkerman, Walton Dam and Somersall Park. The Manor Fields Association would like your ideas about how you’d like to see Manor Fields used to the benefit of the community, and would love to hear from you if you’d like to become a volunteer. You can contact Angela on 01246 208379. If you don’t want such an active role, you could always just take a stroll around Manor Fields to see what has been happening over the past few years and enjoy a little peace and quiet. Keep It In The Family
A fresh take on car ownership by Peter Dibble of Noble Motorsport. I guess as part of consumerism, we’re driven to want ‘new’ of everything, but as Noble explains, with today’s cars this is driven more by desire or status than necessity.
C
ars have become almost disposable, yet why? If you turn back the clock, any vehicle that survived more than 20 years was a rarity - bodywork rusted, parts broke and generally they just got to a point where they cost too much to maintain, the cheapest option was often to get rid and look for a new set of wheels. However, this is not so for modern cars, Peter Dibble at Noble Motorsport explained “today’s cars are far removed from cars of 30 or 40 years ago, they last so much longer - manufacturers are offering five or seven year warranties with their products, so they must be sure they will easily achieve the 100,000 mile target, the bodywork will remain bright and new, and more importantly bits won’t start falling off!”
If looked after properly, today’s cars will still be running reliably in years to come and Noble can help look after your car be it 50 years old and cherished, or one year old and simply the family taxi. Noble can service any car whether it’s in or out of warranty - as long as they use manufacturer’s parts and follow the manufacturer’s service schedule, any nonfranchise garage can service your car and the warranty will be unaffected. If you do this, it’s always a good idea to get receipts and part serial numbers to show the correct parts are used and ensure the servicing book is stamped. Page 50 • www.s40local.co.uk
It’s only when a repair for an item covered by the warranty is needed, that it has to go back to the franchise dealer for the warranty to remain intact. So, perhaps it’s time to consider hanging onto a car for more than three or five years. Why not ensure it’s properly looked after and keep it in the family? For cars on finance with a bubble payment it might be more cost effective to borrow the money or dip into savings, clear the finance and the car is yours, look after it well by making sure it’s serviced and maintained in line with the service schedule and after say six years you have a car that’s paid for and, other than maintenance, running costs and fuel, is cost free. It should then provide you with trouble free motoring - 20 years should be easily achievable! If you hang onto it long enough why not keep it in the family? Hand it down (or sell it!) to your offspring as their first set of wheels! It makes financial sense - to shop carefully, purchase something with a long warranty, look after it and eventually it will owe you nothing. If you do already have a cherished old car, again Noble Motorsport can help. “We have provided servicing and repairs to a wide range of cars” says Pete, “The cost of servicing and repairing an older car is far cheaper than the depreciation on a new model. We’ve worked on almost every classic car, many sports cars and cars from most manufacturers, we pride ourselves on our service and whether you want a new exhaust for your Ford Focus or a new turbocharger on your Nissan GTR you’ll get the same level of service and attention. We’ll even clean it inside and out and, if you come for your first service, we’ll include your oil and filter free!” Noble Motorsport Ltd can be found tucked away at the back of the Chatsworth Business Park at 172 Chatsworth Road (you can’t miss the huge Urban Canvas painting of Sterling Moss on the end of their building) where you’ll find they have ample parking and a clean comfortable reception. Ask for Pete or Mike and you’ll be well looked after.

Igloo In New Zealand Worldwide support from Igloo Cycles
Hot on the heels of the Olympic success of the Brownlee brothers in the Triathlon, Rob Dixon from Igloo is heading out to New Zealand to provide mechanical support to the 400 strong GB Age Group Team at the Triathlon World Championships in Auckland from 20 - 22 October.
T
he GB Age Group Team - juniors, seniors and veterans - is made up of the top performing athletes from various events around the UK, who are invited to compete in the world championships for their country. Rob, and another mechanic will be offering all levels of mechanical support, from unpacking a bike from its travel case and assembling it, through to setting up electronic gear shifting. “The level of mechanical skill varies enormously across the competitors and even the most skilled often want a quick check to ensure their bikes are properly set up. You have to remember that a mechanical failure may mean missing a podium place” says Rob “they will be depending on us to get everything just right - so there’s no room for error.” It’s a stressful time with so many bikes to look at, but on the flip side Rob gets to watch the world’s elite athletes competing, and with Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee, Gold and Bronze winners at the London Olympics competing, it promises to be a great event. To keep our bikes in Chesterfield in tip top condition whilst Rob’s away, Igloo have recently taken on a second pair of hands in the form of Nick Baker, who joined in early September. Both Nick and Rob are Cytech Level 3 qualified, which means they can look after everything on your bike from the basics right up to more advanced issues including suspension, hydraulic brakes, wheel building and full bike builds. If you’re in the market for a new bike yourself, Igloo has some fantastic discounts on end of range 2012 bikes to make way for the 2013 models - so it’s well worth taking a look. And thinking ahead to Christmas - if you’ve got your eye on some specific cycling gear you can take advantage of the “Igloo Wishlist” service, just like a wedding list, you can go in and select a number of items to add to your list, so friends and relatives can call in and purchase an item from the list - to make sure you receive exactly what you are after. Of course, if you don’t get time to set up your wishlist, Igloo also sell gift vouchers so you can pop in after Christmas and choose your own. With a full range of bikes for any discipline, from kids balance bikes and bmx’s through to full carbon road and mountain bikes, there’ll be something to suit every cyclist at Igloo. Watch out for future updates on demo days, event sponsorship and a great new range of 29ers to come!

Festival
Festival fever is certainly gripping our area at the moment, and St Thomas’ Church is right at the heart of the action again...
B
etween Friday 7 and Sunday 9 December, the church will be hosting a Christmas Tree Festival to bring together the community - groups, schools and businesses alike, to demonstrate, under one roof, the diversity of talents and services, we have on our doorstep. Jane Simmonds, who’s also involved with Operation Christmas Child is organising the event and explains “Community groups, schools and businesses will be involved and will be invited to decorate their own trees in a way that depicts what they do. Pubs might decide to decorate their tree with bottle tops and table mats; groups might hang framed pictures; a walking group could use miniature walking boots/maps/ drinks containers/binoculars; a cake shop – miniature cakes etc. I can’t wait to see how creative people are”. It’s sure to make a fantastic visual display in the church and during the weekend the church is hosting a programme of events to accompany the festival. During the Friday local schools are invited to visit, and on Saturday there will be Christmas themed demonstrations and activities, including cake decorating, flower displays, dessert demonstrations, dancing, music and comedy. And on Saturday evening there will be Community Carols in the church. “It promises to be a festive treat, Christmas is a very special time of year, and what better time to celebrate as a community under one roof? We’d love to see you there, so please come along” says Jane. For more information, or a programme of events call in at St Thomas’ Centre or contact Jane Simmonds 07974 831 274 or janesimmonds58@gmail. com. You should also find details on the counters of any participating business on Chatsworth Road from the end of November.

Community News Britannia triumph in Bowls Challenge This item just missed the cut for last month after being delayed from its original date over the Jubilee weekend. The Walton and West Community Forum - Jubilee Charity Bowls Challenge was decided on Sunday 2 September at the Britannia Bowls Club on Old Road.
Holymoorside Bowling Club The long awaited pavilion, a shelter for visiting teams and spectators, was opened at the Club’s Wilsunday Cup drawn doubles competition, by Lesley, twin sister of the late Roger Scothern, whose bequest to the Club funded this muchneeded facility.
The weather was perfect; even the Red Arrows paid a visit and the Britannia triumphed in the final by 45 points to Boythorpe’s 36. It was agreed that the (re-scheduled) event had been a huge success (it had been rained off during the actual Jubilee weekend) - not only in bringing parts of the community together but also in raising money for Ashgate Hospice. Secretary, Steve Beddoe expressed the hope that it becomes an annual even and offered thanks to the Community Forum for instigating the challenge event and providing the trophy. Walton and West Community Forum Vice-Chair, Howard Borrell, presents the trophy to the
On a rare sunny afternoon the trophy was won by Andy Davidson and Bob Pinder who by a remarkable coincidence, had drawn each other again after finishing as runners-up in 2011. Of the six teams competing in the Chesterfield League The Veterans ‘A’ team are top of Division 2 while other teams are well placed in their respective divisions. The Club’s Presentation Evening with supper and entertainment will be held in the Village Hall on Friday 2nd November. Please ring Etta Swift on 568606 for your ticket.

November:
10 things to do in the garden By Colin Harrison of Transition Chesterfield
The leaves are changing colour and falling and the kids are collecting conkers. Autumn must be here so what’s needed in the garden? 1. If you have been organised enough to order bare-rooted trees or shrubs (local nurseries may have some, although the varieties will be limited) they should be delivered sometime this month. Plant them out as soon as possible – it is essential the roots don’t dry out, so if you have to keep them for a few days, wrap them in some old sacking or something similar, and (very important) keep them out of the wind. 2. If it stays fairly mild, you can still divide rhubarb and other perennials, but don’t do so if the ground is frosty. 3. Cut any remaining perennials down to ground level, leaving any with attractive seed-heads. 4. Lawns may still need occasional mowing; keep them clear of fallen leaves, and rake out wormcasts. You can also lightly trim hedges to keep them tidy, but don’t overdo it otherwise you’ll be looking at bare patches all winter. 5. Sow over-wintering broad beans and peas.
What a good opportunity to use the pic of our purple potatoes again!
6. Apart from parsnips and swedes, all root vegetables should be lifted. Leeks usually withstand frost quite well. 7. Continue to check any bare soil for germinating weeds and deal with them; it’s normally easier to get all of a dandelion root out if the soil is wet. Digging over vegetable patches can be quite pleasant if the weather is good, with the possible added bonus of a robin watching to see if you turn up any worms. But try to avoid walking on wet soil, as this will compact it, then you’ll need to dig it again. 8. If the birds have left you any holly berries which you want for Christmas decorations, protect them with fleece or a loosely fixed bag. 9. If you have bird-feeders, keep them topped up and provide fresh water as well. Encouraging foraging birds, especially tits, will help deal with over-wintering pests and their eggs, as well as being great fun to watch. 10. Mostly the colder months are about planning for next year, looking at catalogues and ordering seeds. No one can predict what the weather will be like next week, let along next year, so you’ll have to assume it will be a normal summer – if only we knew what that was any more... Transition Chesterfield’s 2013 Potato Day will be on January 26th - we are already taking pre-orders, using the form that can be downloaded from our website (www.transitionchesterfield.org.uk). Unfortunately we have had to raise our prices, but our suppliers tell us it has been an abysmal summer for them so we expect across-the-board increases from all sources. We’re offering 41 varieties of potato which we sell by tuber number, not weight, so you can experiment with different types. We’ll also have some onions, shallots (both sold by weight) and garlic. Pre-ordering saves money; we’ll try to find a way to distribute order forms to people without internet access, and let you know about it next month.

The joys of
checking yourself out!
Will Jackson’s Blog
I
think I have an issue with supermarkets. Correction; I know I have an issue with supermarkets. There is nothing I can think of which is positive about them… whatsoever. Everything is infuriating; from their excruciatingly ill designed car parks, to the lack of open checkouts. Nothing about a visit to the supermarket is pleasurable. I am convinced the owners of the supermarkets know this because occasionally they develop new, inventive and revolutionary things to ease the frustrations experienced by the everyday shopper. Let me introduce the SelfCheckout facility. The selfcheckout is the concept of undertaking your shopping within the store, getting yourself to an unmanned machine (the self-checkout), scanning your goods, packing them up and then paying for them, all completely unsupervised. Personally, my only priority when entering a supermarket is to get back out as quickly and painlessly as possible with the items on my list and on the face of things, the idea of the self-checkout should really help me achieve this goal. Don’t get me wrong, there are plus points, for example, using the self-checkout means we can avoid polite conversation at the checkout. Also, it gives the shopper ample time to pack their own bags in a sensible and orderly fashion ensuring items are not inadvertently crushed (no one likes imprints of apples in their loaves of bread). And finally, it enables the untrustworthy shopper to nonchalantly partake in a mild case of shoplifting whilst hiding behind excuses such as ‘technical failure’ or ‘inexperience’. From my experience though,
self-checkouts are ultimately evil and far too smart. My question is simple; has It ever crossed your mind that unloading, scanning and packing a trolley full of stuff on the self-checkout is only ever going to be problematic? I mean, let’s face it, it is not rocket science; the side which requires you to ‘self-pack’ will never accommodate the vast quantities of items that you are intending to buy. And don’t think you will be able to put some of the packed up goods back into your trolley because the self-checkout isn’t stupid… it will know… it will even tell you that “an item has been removed from the packing area” if you try it! It says other things too, like “Have you used your own bags?” and it is at this point that I must highlight that I am not a dishonest person but when it comes to earning extra clubcard or nectar points I can’t see the issue with bending the rules slightly. I recently misinformed the self-checkout that I had used 10 of my own bags when I hadn’t. As it happens, I was only purchasing a small block of cheese, a frozen pizza and a bottle of wine and admittedly in hindsight, I underestimated the self-checkout’s capabilities to calculate that I would not require 10 bags for only 3 items. But after the selfcheckout allowed me to commit to falsely claiming the use of 10 bags, it proceeded to question my honesty. I stood looking around for assistance, I was joined by the ‘self-checkout supervisor’ who humoured my excuse of ‘accidentally typed in 10 instead of 0’ and proceeded to enter a mysterious override code which undid my blatantly dishonest claim. I clearly don’t appear to possess the skills required for
scanning stuff. I adopted the ‘attempt to scan it 3 times and then just steal it’ policy which unfortunately didn’t do me any favours either. After I had given the self-checkout its 3 chances to read the barcode on my small block of cheese (and in line with my policy), I just bagged it. At that point, I was politely informed by the selfcheckout that “there was an unexpected item in the packing area”, which as you can imagine, did initially catch me by surprise. The announcement however, did provide me with enough guilt (and just the right amount of clarity) to re-evaluate my pending criminal act and re-attempt the scanning process again; this time with the help (and close eye) of the ‘self-checkout supervisor’. It scanned first time... which obviously didn’t look good. I needed the assistance of the ‘self-checkout supervisor’ one last time during my epic self-checkout journey too because apparently, to approve the purchase of wine, they need to enter another magic override code. I was a little upset that I am finally at the age where I clearly do not look ‘visibly under the age of 25’ too because they made no attempts to check, not even a glance! So admittedly my self-checkout experience wasn’t great. In fact, I would go as far to say that I probably used more supermarket staff resource than if I had just used a normal check-out… and that was at a ‘supervisory’ level! But hey, don’t let me stop you… Check yourself out! Thank you for reading and if Please check out more of my complete and utter nonsense at www.wj79.wordpress.com Take care, Will Jackson.
