W

e’re nearing the end of 2012 and hurtling towards another Christmas reflecting on the year - we’ve seen the UK successfully pull off an impressive Golden Jubilee celebration, our first Tour de France winner and a fantastic Olympics - a fairly slow start that culminated in a mountain of gold medals - and importantly for us - the torch came, not only to Chesterfield, but up Chatsworth Road and we had an afternoon of carnival like fun!

As usual the British weather kept us on our toes, summer was a wash out with a myriad of strange weather events confusing many of us... I’m definitely going to make a note next year to make the most of the sun in March and April and not wait until ‘the summer’!

This year I’ve been inspired by quite a few people - Bradley Wiggins, Queen Victoria Pendleton, Martin Ashton, our athletes, but also by Felix Baumgartner and his skydive that broke the sound barrier, Morgan Wade - a Red Bull Full Circle rider, The Community Players Present

What has also inspired me is the year we’ve had locally. Chatsworth Road has seen a lot of change and much of it still ongoing, at the sharp end new businesses move in and others move to larger premises, some move their base from other parts of town but what is clear is that businesses want to be here. It pleases me to see that the majority are still small independent guys who might well live next door to us, the large corporations still in the minority.

There are also plans for change at the Walton Works site, could be big but the jury’s still out on whether it will reach the next phase.

It’s easy to find good news, and easy to find bad but economically the media focuses on the bad, perhaps a bit more focus on the good stuff might give us all a bit more inspiration personally... and in business to get on with it!

So I bring you the latest news - from the mouths of the business owners, we announce the competition winner from the festival picture quiz - with the answers, if you found the quiz a little tricky I’m sorry. The Christmas quiz is much easier - finding the hidden Santa’s, beautifully illustrated thanks to Chesterfield’s Art Mavo, who illustrates the Augustus and Alfie books. If you can find them all and send in the entry, you could be in with a chance of winning.

And lastly - can you answer this one that I was asked by my daughter “who delivered the presents before Santa was born?”

Avondale Surgery Kate Chiltern, practice Director updates on the progress at the old Manor School site.

I

can’t travel along Saltergate / Ashgate Road without noticing the changes happening where Manor School once stood. Kate Chiltern, Director & Partner at Avondale Surgery, who will be moving into the new building, has been heavily involved in the project, so I went along to meet her.

Kate explained, “Avondale Surgery has 11,000 patients spread across Chesterfield. It’s tucked away on Avondale Road near the old football ground - parking and disabled access are poor, with consultation rooms upstairs - it’s a property that simply wasn’t designed for the job and it was time for a change. We’ve been involved in a four year search for a new site for the practice and acquired the Manor School site in November 2009. Our intention was to refurbish the building and move into a new home that better met our needs, unfortunately it soon became apparent that refurbishment would not be a viable option as we could never achieve the BRE Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) standards associated with a building destined for healthcare use.

“After much deliberation and thought we were left with no option other than to demolish the old Manor School and rebuild a landmark iconic building that would put back the interest into the skyline of Chesterfield.”

“People have memories of the site, but we found the strongest memories were not of the school but of the swimming pool, on seeing the reality of what now existed these memories were quickly shattered.”

I was interested to know how this had gone down locally as I recall plans and efforts made to save the building. “It’s not been easy” admitted Kate, “people have memories of the site, but we found the strongest memory was not of the school but of the swimming pool located in the basement, and people who learned to swim there.

As part of the patient involvement process we took a group into the building and to inspect the pool area - complete with their wellies and torches, and they were shocked by the level of decay in the building. Whilst empty it had been heavily vandalised, pipework stolen and water was flowing through the building; it sounded like there was a stream running through the place.

The memories people had were shattered by the reality of what now existed.”

The building was demolished by Christmas last year and Peak Pharmacy will own the new building. They have worked with Manchesterbased architect, Andy Avery and local constructors, Wildgoose Construction, who are leading the project and are looking to use local businesses and trades as a priority, everything is on schedule for completion by October 2013.

“The new development will be a community facility, we will be able to look after people from the cradle to the grave” says Kate. “We will have a cafe; Little Acorns Day Nursery will have a purpose built new area; and the charity Embracing Life (introduced in the July edition of S40 Local) will be taking space on the lower floor offering a holistic approach to healthcare helping patients who are suffering symptoms of long term conditions.”

“All health related services will be under one roof, we will be able to offer services that people presently have to travel out of town for and we will continue to have access to three community matrons to focus on end of life care and keeping people in their homes and out of hospital where possible.”

“We will also have meeting rooms for local health related groups and simple things like a decent staff room. All of this in an iconic building that fits the street scene perfectly, is on a direct bus route, has 70 parking spaces and is designed specifically for the job.”

Within the new facility they hope to display old items and memorabilia with an association to Manor School. If you have anything that could be included, Kate would like you to get in touch, “we want the new space to celebrate the past links with the community as we move into a new era and build new links with the community. And the reception area will feature key architectural elements including the bell that was on the top of the old building “when we removed the memorial stone we found a 100 year old Scottish newspaper placed in a box behind the stone, a memento from one of the original builders, so we’ll be including that in the display” says Kate.

I’ll be taking an interest in seeing the building rise from the ground and will be keeping an eye on the skyline as I drive by.

Maison Well you won’t be surprised to know that I jumped at the chance for a sneaky peak of the project, when I was invited to meet Mes Amis’ Marcella Kirk and the team at, what is now, Maison Mes Amis.

My first thoughts were how bright and airy the place was, and it was still being painted! The Prince of Wales was a typical 70s pub, dark wood panelling, heavily patterned carpet, bench seats, in the 70s and 80s it was the place to go for food.

It’s hard to recognise the old place, the opening between the two rooms has been enlarged, new windows and doors, new entrance, new floor - this isn’t just a lick of paint, it’s a full refurbishment.

The environment looks promising, so what will Marcella be offering? “I wanted to create a version of home” says Marcella, “Mes Amis was styled around a lounge, dining room and kitchen, Maison Mes Amis will be just the same, but with the addition of a bar in the lounge and an outside courtyard off the dining room. The kitchen is in two sections, behind the scenes is a typical industrial area together with an open rustic area, more like your kitchen at home, where you’ll be able to see food being prepared.”

“It’s roughly two and a half years since Mes Amis opened at 479 Chatsworth Road and over that time the business has simply outgrown the space. At Maison Mes Amis you can be sure of the same great food and service but on a larger scale with new facilities.”

Maison Mes Amis will be serving food all day, and a full evening menu from Wednesday through to Saturday. The bar will be open for cocktails, fine wine and a selection of continental beers.

“The new layout means we can also cater for private parties” added Marcella, “it’s something we did occasionally at 479 but, we’d have to close to other people or host the event out of hours, so we’ll be able to do this more easily now, and in the spring we’ll have the rear courtyard available so we’re looking for our first wedding breakfast.”

Maison Mes Amis has also taken on a new chef, Craig Skinner, to join James Gaunt in the new kitchen.

James, from Walton, trained at Buxton College and Sheffield Hallam, has worked in Aitche’s in Bakewell, Renatos, as well as further afield, was head chef at The Pump in Barlow, The Trout in Barlow, The Rutland and Royal Oak before moving to Mes Amis a couple of years ago.

Craig is also local, he studied at Chesterfield College and Sheffield and has worked at the Wellington Hotel in New Whittington and Renatos during his college years and at the age of 19 started at Rowleys in Baslow where he’s worked for over six years, most recently as head chef. In moving to Maison Mes Amis he’s looking forward to the challenge of French cuisine.

The chefs are excited about the future and are keen to make Maison Mes Amis the destination for food and drink lovers.

“It’s definitely not just about the evening menu” emphasises Marcella “we’re still the same team, serving the same great coffee or tea, scones and cakes all day - and our signature Croque Monsieur’s. But we now have a bar and will be open into the evening for evening meals - a grown up Mes Amis.”

We open up in full on Saturday 1 December during the day and for evening meals - but on Thursday 29 and Friday 30 November Maison Mes Amis will be open for daytime food and the bar will be open in the evening.

The changes taking place at Maison Mes Amis demonstrate that Chatsworth Road is still attracting and retaining new and interesting ventures. I wish the team all the best with the move and I look forward to visiting for a Sunday morning breakfast!

Through S40 Local I work with design agencies and businesses, many of them provide me with artwork for adverts.

Minuteman, is one of these, run by Jon Harris - but providing me with artwork is not all they do.

P

hil, Jenny and Jon Harris took Minuteman Press over in October 2010 and, as with many small businesses, it wasn’t really part of a grand plan - it simply evolved as the family took advantage of opportunities that arose.

Jon qualified in design at Loughborough University and from University went to work in the fitness industry in Sales & Marketing, over time this developed into design related activities.

Jon left the fitness world and worked self employed for a few years, working on graphic design, websites, window graphics and signage for a variety of business including Donnington Park, JCB and many other local companies. As with many sole traders the travelling and hours started to take their toll and it was time for a change to improve the work-life balance.

Jon was interviewed by Steve (the previous owner of Minuteman Press, Chesterfield) and started the next day! Jon concentrated on design and production and Steve, Sales and Marketing. “The technologies were different to what I’d used before” says Jon, “but I enjoyed the learning process and getting into digital print”.

“After a couple of years I actually left Minuteman Press to travel the world, visiting Thailand, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand and America, but I heard on the grapevine that Steve was considering selling up. My parents, Phil and Jenny, have many years experience in accountancy and business planning and we discussed the possibility of us taking the business over and pushing it forward as a family business. They were excited by the ideas I had, so excited in fact that, with no experience of print, they decided to branch out from their longterm careers in the world of finance to become partners in the business” Not before they’d travelled to New Zealand, the Artic, Antarctic, Peru and the Galapagos islands... a family trait perhaps?

You’ll find Minuteman Press in the Chatsworth Business Park at 272 Chatsworth Road, neighbouring Brampton Brewery, Noble Motorsport and EXLEN computers.

Phil and Jenny take care of the business and finances, whilst Jon concentrates on design, with their other team member Kelly Bond. Kelly stood in for Jon while he was travelling and was kept on as an additional graphic designer. She is a familiar face around Chesterfield, performing in The Shambles Band. It’s been a busy couple of years, made evident by their need for a new apprentice, Kayleigh Buss, appointed through the Centre for Business Development.

Minuteman Press offers a complete design service, business stationary and marketing material and have access to in-house digital printers. They have a large format printer and a plan copier suitable for engineering drawing and architects plans and large posters etc, print finishing kit and can offer mail-merge, leaflet print and delivery and many more print based services. As they are part of a franchise group they also have access to other print and finishing services available from other offices such as point of sale and promotional products.

Jon Harris took to gymnastics at the age of five and became a qualified gymnast, competing until he left to become a member of a display team which has worked across Europe in Holland, Portugal, Gran Canaria, Itally, Austria and Germany. Jon is a member of the Amber Valley Gymnastics Club and now acts as a coach within the club.

Harleys Hair relocating to a Harleys near you.

Harleys is a Brampton family business through and through and with 18 years trading under their belt and three evolving businesses in the area, they’ve always something interesting going on, and now is no exception... the wallpapered window on Chatsworth Road gives it away.

T

he people behind Harleys are Az and Nick Ward, both hairdressers who started in business at 9 Holywell Street, next to the Winding Wheel in 1995. It was Nick’s passion for design which lead to them opening Harleys Interiors - starting out in the reception area of the Salon before opening on Beetwell Street in 2003. Harleys Interiors concentrated on inspirational design, stocking the latest in homewares, furniture, soft furnishings and gifts for the home.

Location, location, location - Beetwell Street was a little off the beaten track, Az and Nick recognised that although

the business was sound, they needed more visibility. It was three years before they found the right spot at 276/278 Chatsworth Road, this was so successful that within three years Harleys Interiors had moved again to larger premises, 20 yards up the road at 280/282 Chatsworth Road where they are today.

Nick and Az set up a second Harleys Salon on Sheffield Road on Whittington Moor in 2009 and after three successful years “Harleys 2” is relocating to, what they describe as, the ‘growing independent business area of Chatsworth Road’. The Salon will be located alongside Harleys Interiors at 280 Chatsworth Road - whilst the Interiors business has been reorganised across the two floors in the adjoining space.

my daughter Sofia manages Harleys Interiors, Amjad, my nephew works in sales at the Interiors business, Charlotte my sister-in-law provided interior design and works at the shop and my late motherin-law Jackie Gwinnell started up the Interiors business - so it’s a real family affair.”

Signature Nails & Beauty New to Chatsworth Road is Signature Nails and Beauty. Beverley Cooper is the owner, having taken on the premises behind the Barrel pub, previously occupied by Kiwi.

I started out in beauty about five years ago” says Beverley, “ my career until that point had been in banking and solicitors. It wasn’t until someone asked me where I got my nails done that I realised I was in the wrong job!”

At this point Beverley left the solicitors and started a mobile nail technician business before taking a position in Walton at Studio One. “I was happy there but have always felt that I wanted my

hese are the opening words to Don McClean’s song about Vincent van Gogh – you may do the same as I have in the past and dismiss this song as being overly sentimental but take a moment for yourself and listen to it again, perhaps while looking at images of Van Gogh’s paintings, and maybe, just for a moment, a chink of light might shine through the darkness of our souls and a flickering memory of what it means to be part of humankind will illuminate and melt away the harsh defences we have had to erect to enable us to cope with our ‘modern lives’. Perhaps also we will see briefly what it could have been to see through the artist’s eyes - all of the torment, suffering and sadness of the world – and also the great joy and glorious beauty of life on this marvellous planet.

We may look out on the world with different eyes.

We may want to continue looking at things this way and resolve to take the time to gaze into a starry night, or a glorious sunset and allow the beauty of it to penetrate our busy modern lives – we may determine to become more considerate and loving with others – we may value our children and partners and friends more – we may become more courteous and caring toward each other when we are driving or shopping – care more about the needs of the elderly, sick and disadvantaged. This renewed appreciation of beauty may become so universal that we will reject the brutal aggressive practices of materialism and self-interest – we could spend more time caring for our environment and nature and enjoy the vast diversity of plant and animal life.

Could it be that developing this sensibility toward life and being confronted with the terrible reality of things how they actually are, might set up a dichotomy inside ourselves – a conflicting personality disorder – it could drive us mad or suicidal – we may want to spend more time caring for others or enjoying the beauty around us – but how will we make a living? but we may ask - even if I become a more caring and understanding person there will be others who will take advantage and try to put one over on me – and then where will I be? and what about my family? I’d have every sort of crook and shyster doing me over and what about Vincent van Gogh? He shot himself didn’t he? And died in poverty – I mean I think his paintings are incredible, they’re worth millions now aren’t they? And he died penniless – perhaps he should have wised up a bit – some artists now make lots of money, although I would prefer a Van Gogh painting to some of this modern stuff.

Art deals with the dichotomy between the ideal and the reality much the same as religion does - which makes the artist appear almost like a preacher, no-one epitomizes this more than Vincent van Gogh who was to suffer the tragic consequence of this inner mental conflict.

Perhaps one of the main functions of art is to remind us of the disparity between the way things should be and the way things actually are and this may explain why the artist has to become extreme in order for us to take the time to contemplate what it is that is truly important.

1927 ... AND ALL THAT!

Godfrey Holmes discovers the Chesterfield Regional Planning Scheme from 1927... and presents an insight into the key areas of the document 85 years later. We have the opportunity to take a peak into some of the issues facing the people who lived and worked in Chesterfield, the councils plans to shape our environment... you’ll see how times may have changed, but how much stays the same.

Wilfred Edmunds Ltd., until recently published The Derbyshire Times, and was responsible for producing a solidly bound report by Professor S.D. Ashtead of the University of London, boasting delicate fold-up maps, interleaved tables, black-andwhite photos, even etchings and engravings and the detailed vision for a Chesterfield, that knew nothing of a looming World War II. The Author’s Note explains how the Regional Planning Scheme is divided into three parts: 1. A General Survey of “the colliery and ancillary industries...a future outlook dependent upon economic and scientific tendencies....questions relating ( too) to housing, recreation, and other interests....”

2. Locations and transport, healthy surroundings, accessibility to work; 3. A Mining Report from R.F.Percy of Nottingham.

The Mayor of Chesterfield, Ald. W. Edmunds, Ald. W. Rhodes, Ald. Ernest Shentall and no less than 19 Councillors from the Borough and surrounding Urbanand Rural-District Councils sat on the Regional Town Planning Committee that commissioned the plan that was intended to incorporate and indeed surpass the existing plans.

Council Structure and Public Transport: In 1927 - Clay Cross, Bolsover, Dronfield and Brampton were Urban District Councils Page 48 • www.s40local.co.uk

(UDCs); whilst Norton, Clowne, and outerChesterfield were Rural District Councils (RDCs). The introductory railway map is definitely pre-Beeching (referring to Richard Beeching’s 1960s reports into the restructuring and development of Britain’s railways). “Motor omnibuses” owned by both Chesterfield Corporation and private companies served “colliers unable to obtain houses in close proximity to mines.”

Employment: Dr. Rudolf Lessing talked about carbonization, slack deposits, and coal by-products. But Chesterfield in 1927 was also to prosper through the engineering at Markham & Co. Ltd., Plowright Brothers of Chatsworth Road, Chesterfield Tube Co. Ltd, and Bryan Donkin Co. Ltd. “Reference should also be made to the cardboard works of Robinson and Sons Ltd., who employ 2,000 workers and James Pearson Ltd. at Brampton, and the Barker Pottery.”

Roads: A 37% increase in road traffic, between 1922 and 1925, was measured at Clay Cross, on the Chesterfield to Derby Road; and a massive 100% increase at Dronfield on the road from Chesterfield to Sheffield. A seven-day traffic census at these two main road sites yielded a 6,111 and a 10,776 motor vehicle total respectively, motor lorries comprising 10% of traffic at Clay Cross, 17% at Dronfield. Worth noting: a daily average of 110 buses passed through Clay Cross and Dronfield and that was half the number of motorbikes heading to or from Chesterfield.

With amazing prescience the Report asks: “Would it not be advisable to build an entirely new North and South road to afford more direct communication between Sheffield, Rotherham, London and the South?”

Praise is heaped on what would later be numbered the A619: “Chesterfield to Baslow via Brookside: comparatively steep, a practically new road, replacing as it does the old road through Old Brampton: exceedingly good. Although it rises to 1,000 feet at East Moor, its general line has been well-chosen...”

A case is made for a brand new Rother Valley Road – and direct connections between Cutthorpe and Ashgate, also Tapton and Hasland. And ahead of time a Loundsley Green Bye-Pass is proposed: one that continues down Somersall Lane, in a curve all the way to Birdholme! Then there is a tart reference to Canals: “It is hardly necessary to mention that the one [Rother Valley] canal has, through neglect and subsidence, become beyond recovery and in view of the increasing importance of roads, there is not the slightest chance of canals in this area in the future.”

Housing: the report acknowledges the existence of new motor-car suburbs; but still argues for a Green Belt round Chesterfield for the purpose of recreation and growing vegetables. “Since the War [1914-18], extraordinary energy has been expended building houses for colliers.”

Chesterfield Borough is cited as building 1,183 houses between 1919 and 1926, Chesterfield Rural District Council: 888 houses, Brampton and Walton Urban District Council: nil! Privately-built housing units in the same period numbered 675, 1,773 and 27 respectively. Arguments are made for and against housing colliers and other workers near their places of employment.

Recreation: Where coal seams are exhausted, the report wants housing where mines used to be active – subject only to risk of subsidence and due provision of parks, children’s playgrounds and gardens. People must be allowed to enjoy themselves on a Saturday afternoon! And schools should have proper playing fields.

Agriculture: On agriculture, it is estimated that the typical Chesterfield farm is an 80-acre family concern. Good arable land is still to be found [in 1927] at Wingerworth and West of Clay Cross. To the West of Chesterfield there are more dairy herds with Eastern farms better at growing corn and cattle-feed. Nottingham soil is richer.

A case is made for more pigs and more glasshouses.

Tourism: Chatsworth and Haddon should start welcoming visitors as Bolsover Castle did (does)! The charming stone cottages of Eckington, Barlborough, Heath, Baslow and Ashover should not be smothered by new estates. “More opportunities – and reservations - may be afforded for picnicking and rambling... in the neighbourhood of Beeley Moor, Brampton Moor....and publicly acquired private land.”

Air Travel: “It is doubtful whether any aerodrome will be required within the region,” but if one is built, it should be sited behind Bateman’s Farm, Tupton – or on the Brimington Plateau! “The time has not yet arrived when in England, it is essential for every municipality to own a golf course.” If poor-quality land can be drained, why not provide more sports grounds?

And so this monumental document ends, without conclusion – or direct allocation of timescale and responsibility you can see elements that are recognisable, perhaps even visionary. A report based on what they knew at the time - and with no idea about the turmoil soon to be inflicted by the Second World War.

t’s that time of year again, only a matter of weeks until Christmas, when the office parties and social gatherings start to get going. The gourmet food and fine wine set to flow (well, depending on how kind your boss is!) now is the perfect time to H.I.T the training to ensure that the most indulgent time of the year doesn’t set you back months on your goals and targets!

High Intensity Training (HIT) may sound horrible but it’s fast and effective at burning fat and increasing fitness. The core objective is when training, give it your all, as a friend of mine says ‘go hard or go home’.

Don’t be scared though, with the right exercises and guidance this type of training is safe, effective and fun!

The table on the right shows a quick 5 minute programme, progressing to a 15 minute taster program for you to follow over the next three weeks that can be done in

the park, the gym or if you feel a bit self-conscious in the comfort of your own home!

Guidelines: Before starting a new exercise regime always ask the professionals for advice to make sure it is suitable for you.

Pick an (A) exercise and perform for 30 seconds, then a (B) exercise and again perform for 30 seconds, followed by another (A) exercise etc. - but each time make sure you really go for it!

Week one perform all 10 exercises and do this 3 times per week.

Community News Fairplay ‘Christmas Wonderland’ As well as hosting many Christmas parties and a Ball for its members, this Christmas local Children’s Charity Fairplay is hosting a ‘Christmas Wonderland’ for members of the public to attend. Protect Our ASH Our Ash trees are at risk. The media is warning us to take precautions to help prevent the spread of Chalara. Philip from Heathscapes has provided us with the following advice.

Ash is one of the most common trees in the country and a key part of many skylines or woodlands. There are estimated to be 80 million Ash trees across Britain.

The Ash tree is rooted in British tradition and folklore being used to predict the weather, carried by school children on Ash Wednesday, the basis of the Yule log and the highly prized Ash sap given to newborns to protect their health.

Be Vigilant!

Inspect ash trees frequently; especially those that have been planted in the past five years.

Also check other garden plants such as the privet, forsythia and lilac for any unusual symptoms as it may be possible these plants are harbouring the fungus.

What is Chalara?

‘Ash die-back’ has wiped out 60-90% of trees in some areas of Europe, so if 90% of UK trees disappear what will the skyline look like?

With confirmed cases of Chalara fraxinea in neighbouring counties of South Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and Leicestershire it is now very important to report any sightings at once, to protect and safeguard our Derbyshire Ash trees.

The fungal disease causes leaf discoloration and loss, crown dieback and may lead to eventual tree death. Infected ash leaves, walker’s boots, dogs, the autumn breeze and leaf-kicking children are all potential carriers of the fungal spores. Simply rinsing your footwear, the dog and the children would be a great help in preventing the spread of this disease and indeed other tree diseases.

10 things to do in the garden

orry to say it, but by the time this edition has been delivered most of the leaves that were on the trees will be in either decomposing nicely or have been blown in neat little piles and then stuffed into the green bins... or to become compost preferably ready for next years borders.

What this also means is that winter is just around the corner. Whilst the number of activities in the garden reduce, it’s not time to hang up your gloves quite just yet.

1.

If you have a pond with fish in it, make sure it never freezes over completely (but don’t break ice by hitting it, which can damage the fish); a rubber ball can be floated in it to make a nice hole.

2.

Winter is the best time to dig heavy ground, incorporating manure or compost.

If you have a decent sized area, don’t try to do it all at once - you’ve got a good couple of months to finish it all.

3.

Pruning fruit trees and bushes. The general rule is hard fruit (apples, pears etc.) should be pruned in winter, but stone fruit (cherries, plums and so forth) should be done in spring; soft fruit varies. Hard prune buddleia to keep them under control.

4.

Take cuttings of deciduous trees, shrubs and currant bushes (you can use some of the prunings). If you’ve not tried it before, why not give it a go? It costs hardly anything (a little compost), and it’s very satisfying. Even the most experienced of gardeners won’t get all their cuttings to root, so don’t be discouraged if it doesn’t work the first few times.

5.

If it snows enough to weigh down branches, gently shake it off; if they snap under the weight tidy up the break point.

6.

Get a lawnmower service booked, check and clean tools, maintain garden furniture.

7.

Keep everywhere clear of debris, which can harbour diseases and harmful organisms.

8.

Plan for next year; check seed catalogues and prepare a wish-list. Be realistic about what you can do, as failing to meet a cherished plan may discourage further attempts.

9.

Winter is a good time to plant or move roses.

10.

Mist indoor plants to stop them drying out in the central heating; keep watering to a minimum.

Christmas?

Surely not...

I’m still waiting for summer!

Ho ho ho! It’s Christmas again huh?

Didn’t that just creep right up?! Just when you thought you’d seen the last of it, it returns, almost with more gusto than last year!

I

can barely believe that it’s been a year since it was here last time… oh hold on, it hasn’t has it? It only ended 9 months ago…

I forget that Christmas is a 3 month event, creeping up after the hauntings of Halloween and protruding well into January and snapping at the heels of spring; Christmas is nothing more than an annoying relative who’s well and truly overstayed their welcome and just won’t go home.

Bah humbug (even though I like sprouts)!

Obviously for some people, like the ones who put up flashing reindeers on their homes in October, Christmas is a very exciting time and couldn’t come soon enough (and stay even longer). I am genuinely happy for these people, I really am. ‘Happy Christmas and have a lovely time!’ In fact, give my regards to the Chief Executive of the electricity company you purchase your power from; I presume you must at least be on first name terms if not verging on being offered their villa in the Maldives.

For a minority, the natural scrooges of the community, like me, I could quite happily emigrate for Christmas and return at some point in February to welcome in the spring. But we are in a recession and times are hard… so I fully intend to wedge myself into the middle of the festive celebrations and have a good time… (ha ha, I even nearly convinced myself then!)…

So far, my preparations have not got off to a great start either, to be perfectly honest.

Yet again, for what must be the 33rd year in a row, I have failed to accrue gifts throughout the year. This is something I always endeavour to do as part of my New Year’s resolution and miserably fail at year after year. My intention is to stockpile gifts throughout the year (usually in sales) to prevent me from having to tolerate the impatient hoards in the weeks run up prior to Christmas Day.

The people who shop within this last available week are in a league of their own when it comes to panic buying rammel. They seem adaptable and happy to forage through piles and piles of ‘stuff’ in the shops convincing themselves that anything will do because desperate times call for desperate measures and time is running out.

They have stuff left to buy, no time left to buy it and their minds have been lost somewhere in the songs they shop to. It’s got to be something and it doesn’t matter what it is; ‘Uncle Fred has always fancied one of these bath soak kits’ and ‘these Minnie Mouse hat and gloves will be ideal for little Nigel’.

It’s the pressure I reckon. That and the perpetual repeats of horrendous jingly and chimey music!

It makes people go a bit nuts, especially after months and months of exposure to it. It starts to get worse in early December when the main question of ‘have you bought all of your presents yet?’ becomes the leading line in all conversations. You always get one person who has done all of their Christmas shopping before the middle of November and who revels in telling everyone who asks! I often wonder if they’re even telling the truth. I can safely say that I am not one of those people; I’m a last minute shopper and a begrudging one at that!

So, whatever your take is on Christmas, do ensure you either remain miserable at all times or enjoy the festivities to your heart’s content!

And for the love of God, Mum, I’ve been dropping hints for 3 years and my toes are cold… can I please have some socks?
