Intro I
’ve lost something - a whole month in fact! I have no idea where February went - perhaps it’s the fact that I’m getting older, so each day becomes a smaller and smaller percentage of my life... and that’s becoming ever more apparent!
Looking back, it may turn out to be a month to remember - the month that triggered a change in our behaviour and a shift away from our reliance on the large corporations to supply our food. I’m just relieved we still have a choice locally - I can’t help thinking were it to happen in 10 years time I would no longer have as much choice. But we’re lucky - Chris Evans encourages the nation to ‘bring back and support the markets’ and in Chesterfield we can thank goodness for our market with its wide range of stalls, as well as our farm shops, butchers, bakers and great independent suppliers. But it’s not just Chris Evans who’s come out in response to the ‘horsemeat’ revelations. Delia Smith wants us to get back to cooking - if we’re cooking it from scratch we’ve got a better chance of knowing what’s in it. Great timing then for Old Hall School’s Cookathon - in this edition they’ve asked us to share their recipe and are encouraging you to try your hand at a Chicken Rogan Josh - they’ll even supply the spices! An unlikely advocate of town centre shopping this month is Jeremy Clarkson, with his solution to their demise being - a call to scrap parking fees in town centres and for us to be more like the French when parking... if there’s a space I’ll park in it! With all this media attention on local, independent food it definitely feels as though change is in the air, and I’m hoping the winners in all this will be our small local independent businesses - people who live in and around S40, who are making a living by working for themselves, pumping the money they make back into the local economy. With all this in mind, we seem to have a lot of business-focussed articles this month. I won’t apologise for that, as I’m hoping that by understanding more about the services on offer around us and the people behind them, you’ll be inspired to visit them and hopefully make a purchase. Auto Select Cars LIfe in the fast lane.
I’ve been looking forward to this for a while now, meeting up with Rob Bartle from Auto Select Cars in Whittington. Why you might wonder? Well it’s a rare opportunity for me to see in the flesh some very nice cars.
I
like stuff with wheels and most cars have four of these so they are quite well placed on the list. You’d never know I had a love for these metal functional boxes we are so reliant upon if you saw what I drive but I can appreciate quality marques.
Autoselect are in the business of supplying prestige and sports, mainly German (Audi/BMW/ Mercedes/Porsche) used cars. Rob has the knack of finding clean, low mileage cars just a few years old, the showroom when I was there had cars from £68,000 to £6,500, from exotic to classic, from prestige to 4x4. “Think about it” he enthuses, “the typical Focus or similar will cost between £15 and £25K. In three years time it will be worth 50% of it’s new value and a few years later much less, perhaps as low as 25%.”

“The prestige vehicles I sell are low mileage and priced similarly to the family hatch. The difference being the residual values they hold are often higher, up to 75% after three years and 50% after five years. This continues as the vehicle ages, so your £15K spent will be worth £10K in three years, take the Focus example, you’re already £2,500 better off and you’ve been driving round in a quality, prestige vehicle for three years. Look after it and chances are I’ll be happy to see it again and secure your next car.” Rob made a convincing case for running a quality car and renewing with Auto Select every three years. All the cars in the showroom are excellently presented and the showroom is as clean as the cars that grace it. So how did you get into car dealership I asked? “I started out in the Fire Service at the age of 20 and stuck with them for 13 years” says Rob, it wasn’t until his first daughter was born that a major change was made, he took time off for paternity leave and never went back! Even whilst working in the Fire Service Rob was running his own business. He and a friend ran a mobile phone shop on Chatsworth Road, this lasted a few years before Rob moved away from
phones and bought his first batch of cars. He’d always been a lover of cars and had fancied the idea of dealing in them, so he took the plunge and started out with four cheap, high mileage cars, “bangers basically” says Rob at Four Lanes End in Cutthorpe. Two years later he opened a garage at Stretton Service Station and it was about ten years ago that he closed this and opened up in the unit off Brimington Road. Things have changed massively since these early days. You may remember the Lamborghini Gallardo advertised in the December 2012 advert, a whole galaxy away from the bangers he started out with. I am always impressed by how quickly Autoselect’s stock moves. The number of times Rob informs me on the day of S40’s print which cars to include in his advert demonstrates how fluid his stock list really is. “The internet is my main audience” says Rob, “I’m selling cars across the country. Last months buyers were from Cambridge, Pontefract, Gloucester, Slough, Newcastle and many other places.” “It’s the time and preparation that sells them, I go to great lengths to ensure that any car in the showroom is turned out looking its best, I take time to find the right cars and when I get something I’ve not seen before I spend time learning about it to make sure that when a buyer calls I know my stuff.” “I’ve also spent time creating the right environment in which to sell my cars and when
I speak to someone they’re important to me. Running your own business ensures you realise this. I’m not on a salary irrespective of how many sales I make, if I don’t sell my stock then I’m in trouble! There have been months when I’ve sold 44 cars, amazing to think but that was exceptional... not a typical month. I’ve recently been joined by James Wright who has a wealth of experience in sales and retail, which gives me some space to breathe.” Rob also has great relationships with dealers and is able to source cars on request, taking the better part-exchange vehicles they take in. He is always on the look out for quality used vehicles so if you have something you think he may be interested in, give him a call. You could find you get a better price from Autoselect than from trading it in at a main dealer. With all these fantastic cars coming through I asked Rob what his car of choice would be? “A Mercedes 4x4” he replies, “I like comfort, I want a car that you can jump in and cruise up to Scotland in. The sports vehicles are great, I do love them too but I have a young family and you only get one passenger seat in an Audi R8. What shall I do with the kids, draw straws to see which one I take today?” All this has me thinking seriously about moving away from family hatches, I just need to convince my wife! There’s been a run of sad news from Chesterfield town centre recently - the Co-Op, A for Art, Hudsons, HMV, Jessops cameras, Superdrug (alledgedly) and these are just the ones we know about. The market hall is under construction, and the traders are under pressure. Ravenside with its free parking takes more people away from the high street and the progress of the Northern Gateway promises another supermarket. In our bid to support the independents, we’ve come up with, or should I say stolen, an idea from a website we found! I attempted to stop supermarket shopping altogether and buy from the local independent shops, but quickly realised that it’s a bit unrealistic and hard work! I can’t find flour, any breakfast cereals, frozen peas, olive oil... anywhere else - or anywhere convenient and affordable on a long term basis. So I’ve decided to give myself a break and what this website I found suggests is to take the 10% challenge! To spend 10% of your weekly shopping money in independent shops - so if your weekly shopping bill is usually £100, you spend £10 locally. If we all did that, 8000 households, £10 x 8000, we’d be pumping £80,000 a week back into our local economy, or £351,000 a month, which would be amazing! Since I started my 10% challenge - I’ve discovered a fab fruit and veg stall on the market, I’ve used a local butchers and farm shop, bought nuts and dried fruit in the market hall, lunch from a small sandwich shop, artisan bread on Chatsworth Road and I’ve got to know the people who run the businesses and stalls. They’re really understanding when I’ve no money in my purse and have to nip to the bank (much less embarrassing than in a supermarket). They let me buy one satsuma or one sweet potato if that’s all I want. I’ve even recovered from my fear of having no idea how much things weigh and just ask for 6 mushrooms - they’re fine about it! They don’t give me a mouldy one in the bottom of the bag as I feared they would - in fact I think they want me to go back - after all it’s their business! It starts to feel that we can make a difference and we do have a choice. If you have any suggestions on where we can get more of our daily shop, from good independent shops, let us know on our facebook or twitter pages - I might even progress from 10% to 20%. My first task is to find myself a milkman - if you know one who delivers in the area I’d love to hear from you. Food for thought.

Is your Child Benefit at risk?

Some Tax Year End thoughts from Peter Boardman, Somersall Financial Management Ltd.
t’s the time of year when you may be taking end of tax year steps to reduce your tax liabilities where possible. You may be familiar with maximising subscriptions to various tax advantageous products but for the first time your ‘adjusted net income’, for the 2012/13 tax year may your Child Benefit! If you’re a high earner you may have already opted out of Child Benefit by completing an online form at www.hmrc.gov.uk/ stopchbpayments. Only the person entitled to the child benefit can stop the payments which might not be the high earner in the family.
If you haven’t yet taken action you’ll be interested to know that it’s Child Benefit payments made since 7 January 2013 that could be affected, 13 weeks worth of the current tax year.
So if either parent in a partnership, that are living together, has ‘adjusted net income’ of over £50,000 in the 2012/13 tax year then the ‘High Income Child Benefit Charge’ will apply. This tax charge reduces your Child Benefit by 1% for every £100 of income above £50,000. This means if either parent has income of £55,000, Child Benefit will be reduced by half and will be totally eradicated by the affect of the tax charge if the high earner’s income exceeds £60,000. For those with incomes way in excess of £60,000 opting out of Child Benefit may well be the best option and you may already have done so but if you’re caught between or even just over the £60,000 ceiling, making a pension contribution before 5 April may be the best solution. You retain your Child Benefit and create an additional retirement fund - much needed once the children are out of the way! Pension contributions are added to your Personal Allowance before income tax is calculated and would effectively reduce income for the purposes of Income Tax and High Income Child Benefit Charge. So an individual with two children and projected taxable income of £55,000 making a £5,000 gross pension contribution would achieve 40% income tax relief and avoid a £219.37 High Income Child Benefit Charge for 2012/13 tax year and £877.50 charge for 2013/14 using the same scenario. This is an effective amount of tax relief of 44.4% for 2012/13 and 57.5% for 2013/14. If you contributed until your children no longer qualify for Child Benefit, high earners could have a sizeable retirement fund part funded by Child Benefit ‘relief’. There are further examples of extra reliefs using pension contributions, especially if you’re caught up by the loss of Personal Allowance when income exceeds £100,000.

We’ve had some ladies who bring their husbands and whilst they shop, they get comfy on the sofa with a paper and a coffee.” Jaqui enjoyed crafts from a young age, doing some cross-stitch with Gran and being part of a creative family. Her first beads were strung together when she was 12 years old. Jaqui is proof that beading is a timeless hobby as she still has many of those items created in her teens
and perhaps more impressive, is still wearing them today. Her passion has turned to a career, allowing her to enjoy her hobby every day whilst earning a living! nne-Marie White, from Holymoorside, is the owner and driving force behind Blanc at 131 Chatsworth Road, bringing emerging, innovative and individual designer brands for every occasion, from the UK and Europe to Chesterfield. Blanc, translation “White” from Anne-Marie’s surname, is her personal link to the business. “I’d travel to Harrogate, York and London a couple of times a year, shopping for clothes” enthuses Anne-Marie, “to seek out designers and brands that couldn’t be found locally. It was when shopping for a guest to a wedding outfit that my husband asked what it was that I liked so much about the trips? I did used to get so excited when entering certain boutiques. When I answered that there wasn’t anything like this in Chesterfield, he asked ‘well why don’t you open your own store’?” Anne-Marie had a strong retail and clothing background having worked in River Island for over 10 years progressing up to training store manager. The decision to start Blanc came about a year after leaving River Island as the kids were older and things had started to settle down to a normal pace - giving her time to focus on something new. “I worked for 12 months to line up suppliers, designers and to find the right premises, and Blanc opened its doors in May 2011, so it will soon be our two year anniversary.” “Since opening I have listened to my customers and furthermore fine tuned the designers available in Blanc. Due to demand I have increased the labels for the ‘Mother of the Bride’ and continue to stock a stunning selection of evening dresses which are perfect for that special occasion or cruisewear. Other UK brands include Jolaby dresses, designed and manufactured in Leeds, “we regularly hold fashion shows, my staff and customers model
for me” says Anne-Marie, “Beth wore a Jolaby dress to the York races and was thrilled to bits when Jeff Banks complimented her Jolaby dress purchased from Blanc and commented that she was the best dressed lady there. He was extremely surprised and happy to learn that the dress was local and UK made”, a fine endorsement indeed. It’s not all Mother of the Bride and occasional dresses at Blanc. In addition Anne-Marie has sourced local UK based designers such as ‘Amazing Woman’ Jeans, “a customer who hadn’t worn jeans for 15 years now has four pairs of Amazing Woman jeans after finding the fit, comfort and styling just right and also sent two pairs to a friend in Ireland who stole hers when to stay” says Anne-Marie. You will also find a range of swimwear, beach bags and accessories - “we’ve added a new range of ‘Benetton’ bags for Spring Summer 2013” a leading brand making a return. Having just celebrated a year since opening it’s doors, Coco Bar Bistro, situated at the end of Corporation Street, reflects on a year which has seen it fine tune its offering and perfect its own brand of British tapas.
I
met up with Andy Greatorex, Marketing Manager, for an update on their first year and discover what this fine tuning is all about. “Our menu changes seasonally, four times a year and has just seen its latest overhaul, to take advantage of the best available local ingredients” explains Andy.
“It’s really important to us to source the best quality ingredients, as locally as possible, so fresh tasty food arrives at the table every time. We’ve permanent real ales from local breweries Raw, Barlow Brewery and Thornbridge Brewery on hand pull and a range of local beers available in bottles. We source our meat with the same principles being fully traceable reared in Derbyshire and delivered fresh almost daily. Our fruit and vegetables are local from GW Price who pride themselves on supplying both organic and seasonal produce. We’re working hard to keep our carbon footprint as low as possible and source 80% of our products from suppliers within 15 miles.” Coco is a great venue, having successfully run a charity fundraiser, private wedding and christening parties. Keeping events firmly on the calendar, Coco also run their own events. “The cocktail evening at the end of January, and one-off menu for Valentine’s both proved big hits. For Mother’s Day we’ve a one off menu for you to try and later in March a Portuguese wine evening to look forward to” says Andy. Coco sits nicely within Chesterfield’s restaurant scene bringing to the table its own unique atmosphere, food and contemporary styling. Chandeliers, exposed brick work, fresh flowers adorning the tables, and an open pass to the kitchen all seem to add to sense of theatre experienced on a busy service. Coco is in a great location - situated in the town centre, a short hop from the train station, as well as being in close proximity to both the Pomegranate Theatre and Winding Wheel - the perfect choice for a pre-theatre bite to eat. Food is served seven days a week from lunch, there’s free parking, free wifi and a great outdoor area to catch a few rays in the summer months (let’s hope). It’s great to see that a year on they are not standing still and are making changes to ensure they remain a great, year-round destination. A presence in the air? The Campaign continues
Progress report on the Crispin on Ashgate Road Last month I featured an article on the plight of the Crispin on Ashgate Road. Tonight (4 Feb) I’ve just returned from the community meeting to discuss the future for the pub.
I
t was a busy night, approximately 150 people attended the meeting. I didn’t get to speak to everyone but it appears that most were there to add their support to the campaign to ‘Save the Crispin’. The meeting started with Sarah Butt and Simon Redding introducing the team behind the Campaign to Save the Pub. They outlined the issues faced and recognised that the once thriving pub, was no longer thus. Local residents were alerted to the

change in use just before Christmas. Around 25 local residents received flyers through their letter boxes advising them of the planned conversion of the pub to a Tesco Express. The local council have six planning applications to consider, relating to the changes. But this is not a major application - it is for small changes to the building, including, extension and car park alterations, alteration to front entrance, installation of ATM and bollards, installation of plant equipment, front signage and gantry and car park signs. In 2005 government-backed changes to planning regulations made it easier to convert closed pubs to other retail use. Not intended, as far as I’m aware, to encourage supermarkets to close trading pubs and convert them to their
outlets - more aimed at reusing derelict or closed pubs. However, this change seems to have played into the hands of the supermarkets enabling them to fast track conversion of pubs to shops. There is an opportunity to progress the community ‘right to bid’, which is still being worked on although it is suspected this will have no impact as it only applies to the sale of a property whereas Enterprise Inns are leasing the property to Tesco and not selling it. A CAMRA (Campaign for real ale) representative stood up and made a brief case. One comment that caught my attention... “the pub is a valued community asset and once it’s a supermarket it’s gone.” So what will bring people back to a pub? Ben Towers, present landlord, thinks the pub has a case and should be viable, so why on most nights are there just a handful of locals at the bar? What do people want from the pub? Why don’t they come anymore? At the meeting, people were encouraged to jot down their thoughts. Many feel it needs to be more family friendly, an outdoor play area for kids, a nice relaxing beer garden, decent food, improved atmosphere, diversify offering a coffee shop experience during the day, comedy clubs, live music, acoustic sets etc. Many ideas came forward and there were definite opportunities to bring back custom, but all the time I was left wondering ‘is it too late?’ James Croft (Director of Property Management for Enterprise Inns) arrived whilst people were refilling their glasses and considering what changes could make a difference. James informed the group that Tesco had signed the lease, so if all the planning applications are approved then the deal is done and Ashgate Road will lose a pub and gain a Tesco. James explained that Enterprise is a business and like any other business, if they are losing money then things need to change. The Crispin is an asset and when compared to other pubs in the area, its no longer viable. Enterprise operate a large number of pubs in the immediate area and with trade as it is today, they cannot afford to operate them all.
James informed the group that “Tesco have signed the lease”, so, provided all the planning applications are approved, it’s probable that Ashgate Road will lose a pub and gain a Tesco. Where next then? Will we wait for the red, white and blue signs to go up, the ATM to be installed, entrance alterations, the extension and car park alterations, and then we can park up and buy our goods? Once it’s there people will use it and the campaign will be over. For the locals who live nearby they will have to put up with traffic 24:7 as deliveries are made, people come and go, and cars stop to use the ATM. Businesses nearby will no doubt feel the impact as trade falls away and some may well close their doors. Some people support the change and look forward to a new local supermarket and all the convenience it brings with it, but that wasn’t the feeling I got from the people gathered tonight. I also get a similar message from local business owners and friends I talk to. Most people feel we have enough supermarkets and mini-markets in our town and would welcome something a bit more interesting... or perhaps in this case something very much like is already there but fresher and improved. But for now the change continues and by the time you read this five of the six planning applications will have been considered. The remaining change is scheduled to be reviewed on 11 March. The campaign continues to see if there are ways to engage with those championing the change and to consider how to create a viable pub again. As I walked home along Chatsworth Road after enjoying a couple of pints of Harvest Gold I heard a rustling sound above me, a carrier bag flapping in the wind... luckily I had my camera to hand... maybe it was trying to tell me something and Tesco’s presence was in the air!

Life In Miniature Wingfield Railway Group
For young or old, enthusiast or novice there’s something magical about a model railway - the miniature representations of real places, accurately reproduced, the comings and goings of locomotives and engines changing their routes, stopping at stations and making their way through this make believe life.
I
’m not a collector of trains or a rail enthusiast, but I know how easy it is to become captivated with a hobby, with researching what’s new, coveting the next best thing, and enjoying the socialising and banter that comes with being amongst likeminded people, and it’s this passion that’s the lifeblood of the Wingfield Railway Group. I went along to the Clocktower Business Centre in Barrow Hill to join a Thursday evening meeting and find out what goes on. A room with two permanent layouts (train tracks) set up, with a dozen or so enthusiasts busy fettling and talking trains - an age ranging from 18 to 80, and lots of trains trundling past. David Harding, Secretary of the Group explained “The Group was formed in 1981 when six model railway enthusiasts got together and took a room above the White Hart at Tupton. The club has had many homes since, a room above the old Co Op opposite the Midland Hotel in North Wingfield, above a travel agent in Clay Cross,
New Street in Chesterfield and in the transport depot at Stonegravels. On 1 April this year they will celebrate 12 years at the present site, a large secure room at the Clock Tower Business Centre. Tom Fagon explained how he got into trains “I was given a kit when younger and developed an interest in Great Western Freight trains and steam engines, there is a great range of engines that you can collect and I enjoy making area and age specific layouts. People generally develop an interest in a particular type of engine, time period, company or area. There really are so many ways in which you can indulge yourself.” Accompany this with digitally controlled track and engines equipped with true to life sound effects, one diesel loco engine running on the track slowed as it approached complete with squeaking breaks as it pulled to a halt and the tannoy announced it’s arrival, before another announcement of departure, the whistle blowing and the engine noise rising as it pulls away from the station. The impression I got was that it isn’t just about the models, but about the real thing - they love trains and all that comes with them and they enjoy their hobby as a way to learn about railway history and create something real and tactile. The romantic age of steam may be gone, but their popularity is still clear, demonstrated through groups like this, successful steam railways and the railway museum in York.

The Group referred to pre-grouping days, between 1850 and 1923 many smaller independent railways operated on a small scale, local to an area. Between 1923 and 1947 all operators grouped into Southern, LMS, LNER or Great Western. Apparently, some clubs are only open to members who run stock from a certain group or timeframe, luckily this exclusivity doesn’t exist at the Wingfield Group , everyone is welcome irrespective of their area of interest. Members attend shows and exhibitions, and both layouts from the Group have been shown around the country, pictures of previous awards and wins adorn the walls. The next exhibition is scheduled for the Bakewell Agricultural Centre in June, an ideal chance to catch up with the Group and see layouts first hand. The permanent layouts have historical and local connections. The main display is a continual loop together with a fettling area (Ed: a space where trains can be brought in and set up or adjusted) based on the Hasland Shed. Previous members of the group worked at Hasland so wanted to reproduce an accurate record of their old place of work. The display started taking shape in 1976 and was worked on for around ten years,
being exhibited often. Today as the constant disassembly and reassembly takes it toll on components, it now remains in pride of place in the Group’s room. Members have access to the group’s room 24 hours a day and can come and run trains on the layouts whenever they like. Whilst I was there a small group were working on a new canopy roof for the station on the second layout, a fictional set-up based around a Derbyshire quarry and station. For some the passion extends to their full time job, Paul Barker produces scale models of locos and carriages, creating unique bespoke products not available elsewhere. It was heartening to find that Slaters, a company located in Darley Dale, also provides kits for locomotives, carriages and wagons. The Group is always looking for new members and are keen to offer advice to those who might be new to the world of model railways. ust a few words to tell you about a day that had everyone smiling. Transition Chesterfield occupied an empty unit in the Pavements and sold potatoes to people. It was on the Saturday when the snow fell and disappeared on the same day but people came and fun was had. The event was officially opened by the Mayor of Chesterfield Cllr Donald Parsons. The potatoes (and there was some garlic that you may have spotted) in question weren’t to eat but were tubers ready for chitting and planting out for the 2013 season. Here’s to a healthy crop.

appy days. At 8:15 am exactly, the shopkeeper opens up. Looking up to an already clear blue sky, he hooks in the long barge-pole he customarily props up beside his counter; gently tugs the canvas blind now emerging from a gaily-painted wooden box: a box that stretches across the left window, central doorway and right window. Above that box is proud lettering : << GEO. CLARKE & SON, PROVNS >>. Two stays now slide up to their 90 degree angle. He knows – we know -- business can commence. But for how much longer? These wonderful, unravelling, unfurling, plain or striped awnings are rapidly disappearing. Chesterfield, too, is losing this vital and fascinating part of its streetscape, townscape: as historic and colourful and topographical a feature as the distant hills. Easter, 1996, one of Chatsworth Road’s most familiar, established businesses: B.&.M. GRAVES, fruiterers, shut down. This shop had always done far more trade outside than inside - whatever the weather. Now overpowered by SAFEWAY less than half a mile away, crates of apples and oranges were emptied for the last time. And gently - imperceptibly - another sturdy canvas blind disappeared into its shell forever. That left the whole length of Chatsworth Road with just one functioning awning : KOO’s Coffee Shop and Delicatessen : sited at its junction with Heaton Street, formerly HENDALE’s televisions; and prior to that, ENGLISH’s. In this little row, just down from St. Thomas’ Church, FISHWICK’s Commercial Properties, also BUTLER’s former butcher, have fitted modern replacements. Other parts of Chesterfield are not so lucky. The busy compact shopping centre of Hasland boasts no old-fashioned awning. Whittington Moor, stretching along the main Sheffield Road, somehow manages to host one hundred small retailers or independent businesses: many unmolested by state-of-the-art shopfitters. There, three authentic examples of the sun blinds I love, can still be found. Outside a butcher’s (latterly The Aquaria) one

blind was definitely used before 1990. Sadly, these premises are now boarded up.

Another brightly striped red-and-white canvas blind was pulled out in happier times - before it fell into disrepair - shielding what is now CROSS CHEQUE. A third blind is peacefully housed above a thriving newsagent’s opposite LIDL. But it cannot unfurl because, over time, it has lost its hinges and eye. A neighbouring video shop assistant cannot know what she is missing - because her high sunblind is obscured by a competing box, this time accommodating a burglar-proof metal glass-protector. Ironically, Whittington Moor is the home of Chesterfield’s foremost supplier of nylon and polythene sun blinds - many of them manufactured to screen shop units and aspiring elderly persons’ homes! Unlike authentic Edwardian shop blinds - the sort drawn out by a long pole with a hook in it - these newer blinds are not as tactile, nor as durable. Yet they are bright, versatile and distinctly Continental. Their mechanism is a 45-degree quarter circle, rather than neat triangle. And because they are never retracted - even in bad weather - their plastic often tears and their struts fail. So, gone are the days when baker, greengrocer, milliner and hairdresser drew out their awnings on a hot day. I used to count them up on my way to school from the top deck of an Atlantean bus. I made a mental note of who held the barge-pole. Before chilled cabinets sun protection was essential books, picture’s, boxes of chocolates all fade, even today. As a boy, when I saw my toyshop drawing out its four corner-position blinds for the very first time in three months I begged other disgruntled shopkeepers to do likewise. Come one hot Saturday afternoon in 1959, I spotted a sweetshop blind - home of a diminutive silver-haired lady in her 70s – that had never, to my knowledge, emerged from its flaking casing. The shop was closed – so, naughtily, I jerked one rusting iron hinge, then the other, that I might force the precious canvas to reveal itself to the outside world. Then came angry tapping from inside to a net-curtained side window: big trouble! So, what of the future? Will Chesterfield ever again wake to the march of shopkeepers holding long wooden poles? Or must we travel to Buxton, New Mills or Swadlincote in the hope of miraculous survivors? Please mention S40 Local • Page 45

10 things to do in the garden By Colin Harrison of Transition Chesterfield
March is when the gardening year really starts to get going, so there’s lots to do; keeping on top of it all is the key to success. Never worry if you can’t do something at the exact time we say you should; relaxing and enjoying it, is far more important; get round to it when you can. Having said that, here are this month’s jobs and tips: 1. Any remaining overwintering vegetables (leeks, parsnips etc.) should be harvested, before they start trying to grow again. 2. Plant out early potatoes; once the foliage starts to show, be prepared to cover it if a frost is forecast. Most varieties will recover from a light frost but may be weakened, which may affect the yield. 3. Plant onion sets and shallots. Some birds think the tips are worms and pull them up; just push them back if this happens. To discourage the birds, run a few lines of black thread tightly over the bed. 4. Hard prune buddleia bushes; they are very tough, and can be cut right back. 5. If the weather is such that the lawn starts to grow, give it a first cut with the blades set fairly high. 6. Most root crops can be sown now, although some might appreciate covering with a cloche or horticultural fleece – check the instructions on the packet. Some hardy salads can also be sown, e.g. radish, rocket and lettuce. 7. Sow sweet peas – you can use a length of guttering as a seed tray. Keep frost free. 8. Treat yourself and visit a garden centre to buy bulbs for summer colour. 9. Weeds will start to grow, so try to prevent them getting a hold by regular weeding. At the same time you can prepare beds by lightly digging them over, incorporating any compost you have. 10. Dead head daffodils, letting the foliage die down naturally, then removing it when it starts to turn yellow. This is when the bulb’s reserves of energy are restored, and it prepares for next year. Tying it up prevents this happening efficiently, and it doesn’t look particularly nice.

Terminus Bowling Club
What’s that up there?
To celebrate their historic centenary year, the Mayor of Chesterfield - Councillor Donald Parsons and the Lady Mayoress, Mrs Diane Parsons will open the Terminus Bowling Club green on Chatsworth Road, Brampton on Saturday 16 March, at 14.00.
Between 8 and 12 March the comet C/2011 L4 will be at its most visible in the western sky, just after sunset.
The club founded in 1913 plans to celebrate its centenary season in style. From its original membership of 23 gentlemen the club has grown, weathered two world wars and now flourishes with both league and social bowling from March through to October every year for players of all ages and abilities.
Comets originate in a place called the Oort cloud which is estimated to be approximately 100,000 times further away from the Sun than the Earth is – that’s 9.3 TRILLION miles away!
Celebrates 100 Years
A Centennial Gate has been specially commissioned to mark the event and this will be unveiled at the opening of the green. The year promises to be a very special one with celebratory activities planned throughout the season in addition to the usual busy club calendar. A Gala Day is planned during the summer and the year will culminate with the club’s Centenary Dinner in November.
Stargazing with Chesterfield Astronomical Society
Comets travel around the Sun in very elongated orbits and this one is no different. In fact when it loops the Sun it will be just over 60 million miles from the Earth so could be very bright on the horizon.
Comet C/2011 L4 is believed to be on its first and last trip to the Sun, scientists believe the comet will subsequently be ejected from the solar system never to be seen again. It was believed it would be as bright as Venus which, apart from the Moon, is the brightest object in the night sky but its brightness has waned slightly in recent weeks so it may be a little less bright! Nonetheless it will be at least as bright as the brightest stars. So here’s hoping for clear skies when it passes by!
We’ve recently established links with Old Hall Junior School to develop a friendly introduction to the game for non-bowlers and coaching for those wishing to improve. The club will hold a public Open Day on Saturday 13 April (11.00 to 16.00) for anyone who fancies having a go - or new bowlers are welcome to come along on Wednesday morning’s throughout the season between 10.00 and 12.00.

If Tennis is your sport, did you know there are great facilities in the picturesque surroundings of Holymoorside. Holymoorside Tennis Club is open to members and also non members on a ‘pay as you play’ basis.
T
he club situated down by the river on the site of the old allotments next to the Bowling Club, boasts three tarmac courts, two changing rooms, a kitchen and toilets. There’s always a friendly atmosphere and warm welcome to any new members. Membership is £65 or £10 for juniors and allows free use of the courts at anytime during the year, apart from match days. There’s morning social play every Tuesday and Sunday, all year round and member’s club nights on Wednesday evenings starting in April. You don’t have to be at a certain standard to join the club, there’s a wide range of abilities and a summer coaching course available. Membership of the club is not compulsory, the ‘Pay as you Play’ facility is £2 per person, for those people not wishing to pay the Membership fee, see the notice board adjacent to the courts for details. The Club has around 45 adult members with a few juniors taking up membership in recent years. Membership is really for people who play regularly, with the £65 fee for a years tennis working out cheaper than the £2 per day option. Membership has other benefits too - the Club

has an active social scene with events open to members, as well as their family and friends. There’s social walks, a Treasure Hunt held in a different Derbyshire village each year, occasional bowling evenings, games nights and informal meals out. The Club fields teams in the Chesterfield and District Summer League, mens, ladies and mixed. Two teams are also entered in the Winter League which runs from September to March. There’s also a Club Tournament with a trophy for the winner! Our Wednesday evening Club Nights kick off on Wednesday 3 April and our Open Evening is planned at the courts for Wednesday 1 May from 6pm onwards - come rain or shine! Adults and children are all welcome to come along and meet other members for an informal game of tennis and refreshments. Let’s Get Cooking BIG Cookathon With Old Hall Junior School
Let’s Get Cooking is a national network of healthy cooking clubs - to encourage cooking by giving people the opportunity to learn to cook and enjoy good food.

n Thursday 7 March, all the children at Old Hall School will be taking part in this year’s BIG Cookathon event, organised by Let’s Get Cooking - and are hoping you’ll get involved too. Last year 40,000 people across the country took part. Old Hall, through one of the school governors, Sam Passingham, teamed up with CSC Manor Offices to get staff at the site involved. The event was such a great success that the school was awarded a prize for Outstanding Effort! This year they hope to build on their success and get even more people involved. Pupils on the School Nutrition Action Group (SNAG), will be at Brampton Food Market on 2 March giving away Naan breads, spice packs and the Let’s Get Cooking recipe for Chicken

The part of Charity Hope Valentine marks the first leading role for Alison Doram, who has been a society member since 2000 and was one of the club dancers in the society’s 2001 production of the same show. The 1969 film version starred Shirley MacLaine and includes such memorable songs as Big Spender, If My Friends Could See Me Now and Rhythm of Life. Sweet Charity, set in New York, tells the story of a woman who works in a dance hall and longs for something more. 2013, The year of the horse… (ish) Will Jackson’s Blog
Well hasn’t it been an interesting year so far? We have had snow, the North Koreans are playing with fireworks again (the two not related I hope) and the 6 nations has started! It looks as though the Chinese New Year celebrations went with a bang too; and as the Chinese embrace the year of the snake, the English sort of embrace… or more like prepare, for what looks to be, the year of the horse. Not only has it been 30 years since Derby winner Shergar was horsenapped from the Ballymany Stud in County Kildare, Ireland; but we have been graciously notified by the UK’s relentless media sources that ‘friends of Shergar’ have been turning up within some of our country’s finest pre-packaged cuisine (‘finest’ may be a little generous). I do happen to indulge in frozen ready meals more frequently than I would probably care to admit. Also, when I was a lot younger, back in the days of ‘holiday jobs’, I

even had the privilege of helping to make them in a factory (of whose name I wouldn’t care to mention). This means that (a) I know what they taste like and (b) I know how they’re made. Am I surprised that these kinds of meals are full of rubbish (no disrespect intended to horses)? No. Am I surprised that budget food isn’t all it’s cracked up to be? No. Am I surprised that the British public are surprised at the recent revelations? Absolutely! So let’s get some perspective here; if you are to buy a frozen lasagne for £1.29, what on earth do you think will be in it?! To be completely honest, I think horsemeat must be at least 5th on my list of concerns; I wouldn’t even dare to tell you the 4 I have in mind before our galloping friends arrive. Furthermore, it’s a family magazine! I did hear of a little earner too (which as per usual I missed out on). Apparently, these £1.29 frozen lasagnes are fetching over £8 on ebay! I only wish I had managed to do the ‘big shop’ before they withdrew the packs from the shelves. I could have been dining on M&S microwave lasagnes this week… Of which I can assure you, are made up of the finest quality beef, hopefully. It’s good to see Tesco didn’t escape without some involvement too. I always like to see Tesco in the news. And to be honest, regarding Tesco’s budget burger range, I was surprised
that the meat content found was as high quality as horse. I only say this as I have had the divine privilege of tasting one, if I were to guess what it was made out of I definitely wouldn’t have insulted our four legged exracing friends. Not that I don’t like Tesco, but I can only think that it must be some sort of Karma due to their attempts to decimate a lovely local pub whose beer garden I spent many years playing in as a child whilst my father enjoyed a few beers on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon (one for the locals!). Oh and isn’t this going to go on and on and on? I bet it’s pies next, I love a pukka pie too! My pie experience will be shattered! The food testers will be all over Ginsters and Greggs like a rash. They’ll be ‘Neeeigh’ hiding (sorry that was poor). I just hope nobody starts questioning what goes into sausages because if someone tells me that sausages are not made up of 100% of the finest cuts of pork, I will cry into my microwaveable beef in black bean sauce. What if those mini spare ribs aren’t actually spare ribs? Or chicken dippers aren’t actually made from 100% chicken breast? What if it turns out that wafer thin ham isn’t ham at all? I can’t cope… too many questions… Are cheese strings made of cheese? From where I see it, give the cows a break, embrace the horse. That or become a vegetarian… who let’s face it, must be enjoying all this! So happy eating (unless you are visiting McDonalds, Burger King or Wimpy (is Wimpy still going?) and if you are worried horsemeat might effect you, take a look at the French, they seem ok don’t they?
