no. 42 April 2013 The community magazine for Ashgate, Brampton, Brookside, Holymoorside, Somersall and Walton.
Intro Hi,
Another year goes by! The ‘4’ on the cover is all I’ve had time to do to celebrate four years of S40 Local. I did have big plans but unfortunately I didn’t have big time! So Happy Birthday S40 Local and a huge thanks to everyone who’s supported S40 Local either by having an advert, providing some content or simply picking up the phone, calling one of the businesses and telling them where you found the number. Then there’s the thanks to my delivery team for braving the snow, Cathy for invoicing everyone and Matt, WIll, and Godfrey for their articles, Louise for hours spent proof reading my appalling grammar and my wife! I was called militant this week in response to our edition last month (Wikipedia: Militant is usually used to describe a person engaged in aggressive verbal or physical combat). I was a little taken aback by this, I don’t consider myself militant. What I think is happening is I’m simply feeding back the comment and opinion people are feeding me as I meet and talk. I’m here to support the small independent business and will continue to do so. Take a look through the advertisers in any edition of S40 Local, they are sole traders, people with small shops, even the larger businesses are still very small in the scheme of things, these guys are important to our economy and community so chances are I might get more ‘militant’ yet! A rather large victory was achieved by a small group on 11 March. The Save The Crispin group did just that, they saved it! Planning was proposed for six changes at the pub to allow Tesco to open it as an Extra store and four of the six applications were rejected. This doesn’t mean it’s all over though, there will need to be plans to create a viable long term business and Tesco may resubmit their plans. I intend to meet with the group and see what happens next so promise to keep you posted. But for the moment I think we should all celebrate a local victory with a pint in our local pub. So down to business. A sporty feel in this months S40; swimming, golf, bowling, cycling plus loads of other stuff. Please enjoy it and if you’re social media savvy don’t forget to ‘like‘ us on Facebook and follow us on twitter, not that we ever tweet anything! Till after Easter. Paul Chapman.

Very Eco Logic A fresh solution to heat and energy supply.
With fuel bills rising, heating our water and homes is an ever increasing proportion of our overall household expenditure - so ‘off grid’ and sustainable solutions start to make sense not only from a financial but also an environmental perspective. Most of us are now familiar with Solar panels (or Solar PV), and also with traditional wood burning stoves to heat homes - solid fuel being one of the most cost effective ways to provide heat. But by integrating a range of alternative solutions there is a real opportunity to heat your home and water independently, putting you almost entirely in control of your energy provision, with very little reliance on multinational fuel companies.
A false chimney breast allowing the
wood burning stove to be installed.
To understand some of these alternatives, I went along to a house

in Walton with Simon Smith from Eco Logic Electrical, where they have recently been undertaking some work that links three solutions. “The starting point of this system is a wood burning stove with an integrated back boiler, the stove sits pride of place in the lounge providing an attractive focal point for the family living space” explained Simon. “The whole chimney breast is false, built to accommodate the stove which needs a chimney. I installed a twin wall stainless steel flue to feed through the roof space. It’s only noticeable at the front of the property where you can see a small black chimney, but many people make a statement with the flue, keeping the stainless appearance right through the installation” Simon outlined. The woodburning stove requires a supply of solid fuel, the fuel burns and the heat from the stove and radiant heat from the flue, heats the room it’s in and then the rooms surrounding the flue on other floors. The stove is used to feed heat into a back-boiler, which is used to heat a thermal store or hot water into the central heating system. The heart of the system is a large thermal store which, in this particular installation, lives in the roof space, “although the thermal store looks like a hot water cylinder, it’s not. A thermal store holds water that is heated, then when you need hot water, cold is fed through the thermal store, passing through a long system of pipework (that is surrounded by the heated water) before emerging as hot water” explained Simon.
“We reckon that the system will be about 80% cheaper than gas, this means a real saving of £1600 a year” thermal alone provides us with hot water in the summer and then we have the solar PV. This was installed about six months ago and although we’re on the new lower feed in tariff as our installation happened after the tariff changed we’ve benefited from cheaper installation costs and recently had our first pay back tariff of £400, even with this year’s grey winter skies.”
The water in the thermal store can be heated from one of four sources in this installation: 1. Solar thermal tubes on the roof (we haven’t got to those yet!); 2. The back boiler heated from the wood burning stove;
“We reckon that the system will be about 80% cheaper than gas, this means a real saving of £1600 a year to us. Long term, the savings will easily cover the costs” adds Hazel.
3. The combi boiler; 4. There is also the option of heating the store by plugging into the mains electric supply, but so far in this system it’s not been needed, but in this home the energy can be provided from the solar PV panels on the roof.
Alternative energy provision requires a large financial outlay but delivers long term solutions to reduce ongoing costs. They make sense for those with a high income or with available savings looking to reduce their energy bills. I was blown away by what I saw, a real integrated solution that puts the control back to the home owner who is now able to manage their energy costs. If you’d like to discuss any part of the solution give Simon a call, “it can be installed in phases to help spread the costs” Simon added.
In terms of heating the home, once the back boiler reaches 58 degrees the heat supply switches automatically to provide hot water to the central heating system and radiators. When the stove isn’t lit the system works the same way as a combi boiler.
I spoke to the homeowner Hazel to ask why they had the system installed and how they are finding it? “We are ‘off supply’ for our gas so have been using Calor gas for years. As costs have risen we were looking for another solution. We used to fill the cylinder 3 or 4 times each winter but since Simon completed the installation we haven’t had to fill it at all. I suspect we’ll be down to one Calor fill each Winter from now on” said Hazel. “The solar

The heart of the system, the thermal store, not pretty to look at but pretty effective and hidde n away in the loft.
The final part of this integrated solution are the solar PV panels on the roof, providing electricity throughout the day and enabling the homeowner to benefit from the government feed in tariff, where you get paid for feeding electricity back to the national grid.

The decision to open Pooky, a new toy shop on Chatsworth Road, just a month after the a global toy store had announced it was coming to Chesterfield, must have been daunting for owner Victoria Holmes. But you only need to take a peek inside to experience the unique charm of this independent toy shop and you will see how very different the two concepts are.
“
I wanted to open a traditional toy shop with a quirky edge” explains Victoria “I love traditional toys, wooden toys, things that aren’t easy to locate or generally available on the high street”. Her range includes newborn and christening gifts and toys for children up to about eight years of age. The toys have a certain simplicity, but
Page 20 • www.s40local.co.uk
are brightly coloured and certain to transform a room. “We’ve many old favourites, including pedal cars, ride-on toys, rocking horses, puzzles, crafts, kitchens, role play games and dressing up outfits. Then there’s games, dominoes, Ludo, Snakes and Ladders, chess sets - games which teach children that you can’t win all the time! Some of them have batteries and some are plastic... but not many.” “When my children visit their Great Grandma, she doesn’t have a massive selection of toys so they play with things like dominoes and her magnifying glass and they are entertained for ages” says Victoria “and it’s on this basis that I choose my stock. It’s often the simpler toys that keep them entertained the longest”. “Many of the children’s parents had the toys I stock when they were children and Grandparents love it as they remember playing with the same games with their children”.
“I remember when I first opened, one lady commented that ‘Pooky was both the worst and best thing to happen to Chesterfield” Victoria has two infant girls so has had plenty of opportunities to research other toy shops, and she’s put her lessons into practice “I decided not to put in a central display unit cluttering the shop to give people plenty of space to wheel round a pushchair or two - it was something I used to find hindered my progress in some stores and I wanted Pooky to be a more pleasant shopping experience.”
If you’ve never stepped through the door then pay Victoria a visit, perhaps take your children to choose a pocket money toy or take a look at their selection of good quality £5 party presents. As I left I realised where I knew Victoria from... our girls are in the same class at school, it’s a small world Chesterfield!
Since opening, Victoria has changed and developed what’s on offer. “I remember when I first opened, one lady commented that ‘Pooky was both the worst and best thing to happen to Chesterfield’. Worst, as she was worried about the money she’d spend and best, as it had a great range of traditional stock, something not seen elsewhere, I was really thrilled,” commented Victoria. Alongside the traditional toys for sale, Pooky provides a range of additional products such as tailored party bags for £2 each with stationary or games, filled with wooden toys that last - not a pile of plastic that is likely to be in bits after a few hours play. Pooky can also arrange for Peppa Pig to attend your party or event, last seen at the summer fair at Holymoorside and out and about meeting her fans on Chatsworth Road during the Festival week. Victoria also offers a ‘lay-by’ service allowing you to pay by installments for more expensive items. Savings cards are also on offer allowing you to pay small amounts each week for an expensive birthday gift, but could also be used to help teach your children about saving - putting their pocket money away each week to save for something they really want. You can also join their birthday club - Pooky will send a card and voucher four weeks before your child’s birthday to spend in the shop - and another little gift when they visit the shop. There’s also a lovely range of children’s greetings cards. New to Pooky in April will be a dedicated area where local makers can display and sell gifts for children - for example hand painted artwork for babies and children, including commissions and nursery/children’s bedroom wall paintings. If you don’t see what you want, you can browse the catalogues for even more choice, place your order and collect from the shop when it arrives.

Pull Kick Glide Sally Parkin of Midlands Swim School
Kid’s schedules are so hectic - filled with activities, classes and play dates, but the one thing I hear most often from parents is “I don’t mind what activities they want to try out or which they stop, but the one thing they have to learn is how to swim”.
“It’s about learning through fun for children in small groups, a maximum of four children to a teacher (or six children if two teachers are working with the group) and we engage with the kids through games” says Sally.
W
“One thing that I heard from parents when I was doing research for starting up the swim school, was how kids often spent more time waiting for their turn at the side of the pool than they actually spent swimming. In a 30 minute session they might only get to do four widths. I make sure our pupils are in the water all the time and the 30 minutes are spent being taught” says Sally.
I met up with Sally who recently started offering lessons from the privately owned pool, to learn more about the principles behind her swim schools.
“We also have questionnaires and feedback loops so I can capture any areas where people feel we can improve.”
e’ve got a number of options for swimming lessons locally and one of those is Midlands Swim School and EMSA Babies sessions at the Springwell Farm pool at Holymoorside, managed by Sally Parkin.
They offer lessons for all ages from the baby classes from 6 months to 3 years, to the swim school for children from three years. They also offer adult classes - where there is no age limit!
Page 22 • www.s40local.co.uk
Teaching at Holymoorside are Rachel, Rebecca, Beth and Dave, all qualified to ASA or STA Level two, CRB checked and fully insured. Sally’s approach to business is simple, she has established a set of solid principles that must
www.emsababies.co.uk
be adhered to and achieved by all her team, she mentors them all to ensure this is happening. “All my teachers take part in a continual training program which sees them under constant assessment to ensure their training is bang up to date, plus most of our teachers are qualified lifeguards and first aiders. Sally has always been a swimmer, having previously swum at a regional and national level in swimming and lifesaving disciplines. “I’ve been running the swimming academy since 1998. Prior to that I worked in sales, but after my first child was born I didn’t want to go back. I got an offer to teach swimming and ended up increasing my teaching time until I was pretty much working full time again. In 1998 I decided to set up on my own - at that time there wasn’t a great deal of choice for swimming lessons other than the local authority. I wanted to offer an alternative and since then the business has continued to grow.” “Midlands Swim School and EMSA Babies both come under the umbrella of EMSA LTD and we now run schools in Sheffield, Nottingham, Derby, Ripley, Castle Donnington and Mansfield so I was really pleased to bring classes to Chesterfield at Springwell Farm” adds Sally. To find out more about the classes on offer at Midlands Swim School, why not check out their website at www.midlandsswimschool.co.uk, give Sally or Liz a ring on 07792 505521 or email info@midlandsswimschool.co.uk.

Blueflame
John Beevers of Blueflame Heat Plan Ltd Winter is hanging around this year, it’s not clearing off, snow in mid-March, what’s it all about? What it does mean is an extended reliance on our central heating systems. Blueflame is a local, Chatsworth Road based, gas service company that specialises in providing annual Service Plans for part or all of the central heating system. Central heating and hot water are things we rely on completely, but we don’t always realise it until something goes wrong - and when it does go wrong, it can be expensive and frustrating to put right - especially if it happens on a bank holiday - as it invariably does! Service Plans are the way to spread the cost of these breakdowns through monthly payments, and how we can ensure there’s someone to help us if things do go wrong. John Beevers is one of the directors at Blueflame, which was set up about 12 years ago and from the outset they established themselves as a supplier of Service Plans, “Of the first five contracts we sold we still have contracts with four, the other one moved and left the area” says John. With any boiler the cost of parts and labour charges that come with adhoc repairs can be very costly, a few repairs and you start thinking about a new boiler. The advantage of a Service Plan is it provides peace of mind, your system gets fixed when it fails and you don’t have to worry. “Most of our customers have come to us after a bad experience with another supplier, mainly the national guys. The customer expectation with a Service Plan is simple, ‘my boiler breaks and someone comes out and fixes it’ in many cases there are so many exclusions and get out clauses that people end up unhappy with the service. “Our terms and conditions are nine points on a single side of A4 in 12pt font, you won’t have to trawl through a book of detail. We do have a couple of exclusions like faults in system design, the problems caused due to defective installations and we have restrictions on some gas fires but otherwise if it’s broke, we’ll fix it.” “We recently learnt of a customer with a national contract being charged for sludge build up in the system. Many times it’s simply the sludge that’s caused the fault, so with us - if it’s the sludge that caused it, we’ll fix it.” Blueflame offers a few levels of cover but basically, it’s Silver for the boiler or Gold for the boiler with the full central heating system (brief outline shown in their advert opposite) and with prices of national Service Plans creeping up, the cost of Blueflame’s plans is a lot more competitive than you might think. Perhaps now is the time to review your contract and consider diverting your pound from the national Service Plan providers to Blueflame - supporting the local guys and the local economy. In addition to specialising in Service Plans, Blueflame offer a complete range of gas and plumbing services, including, boiler swaps, upgrades, power flushing to mention just a few so they might be worth a quick call whatever the problem. Your response to the 10% independent article has really taken us by surprise, thank you to everyone who’s been in touch with feedback, support and ideas for making it a success. What’s really been ‘trending’ in S40 this month has been the love of the milkman and I say that in a social media sense as well. From the first delivery of S40 Local last month, we were inundated with phone calls, emails and texts recommending local milkmen but none of these have just said “here’s the number of a milkman” - all have been accompanied by high praise for their supplier with comments such as: “delivers really early in the morning and is friendly and reliable,” “Fab milkman! Even when we had that really deep snow the other year (2011) he always managed to deliver our milk!” And it’s not just me who’s been inundated following the request for a milkman - our local milkmen have found the page of S40 Local stuffed into many a returned milk bottle from their faithful customers! Anyway, on the 13 March we received our first milk bottle delivery for many years and we took this photo (below) of our Peak District Diaries bottles lined up in the fridge, and posted it on the S40 Local Facebook page. Consider that our most popular posts generally receive a hit rate of about 80 people, imagine our surprise when the milk phenomenon took hold and the bottles went viral, well in a local sense perhaps! We recorded 1613 people seeing the post and received 26 comments - sharing the milkman love and our ‘likes’ growing on Facebook. Now, I’m no social media guru, and much as I’d like to say we planned this campaign to perfection - it really was a total surprise! Just shows that when something captures the imagination, social media can help spread a story like wildfire! If you’d like to follow us - you never know we may post something interesting again one day - find us on facebook - S40 Local and give us a ‘like’. Amidst all the excitement, what I’ve forgotten to do is introduce the local milkmen behind the phenomena - Mike Wildgoose (566 186) and Mick Barrett (203 768)... both of whom have business cards in this month’s edition should you want to choose one.
Here’s what you said: “Mick Barratt is my milkman. He has never failed to deliver my milk and always with a smile even when it’s raining. I can not thank him enough, genuine caring guy and even known to help deter the odd dodgy character in the really early hours. Boost the local economy use your local milkman and get the freshest tastiest pint around. Thanks Mick for never letting me down...” “Mike Wildgoose is our milkman he always delivers our milk whatever the weather! So much nicer milk than the supermarket rubbish!!” “Mick Barrett top milky in Chesterfield have used him for years, very polite always friendly and most important to me reliable carry on the good work Mick, oh yes come rain or snow he still arrives” “Yep Wildgoose milk rocks! Never missed a delivery ever... even in 55cm of snow!”
Page 28 • www.s40local.co.uk
So what was it about milk that struck a chord? It seems that for those of you who do have a milkman, you really love them - and you’ve built up a loyal relationship with them. As I type a pint of pure fresh semi-skimmed milk from a supermarket is 56p. Delivered to my door in a glass bottle costs 59p so it’s not costing me that much more but there’s simply Daisy, the farmer and milkman in my supply chain... and even better Daisy only lives about 15 miles away. 10% is just one part of our quest to drive more money into our local economy. A great example that shows how the same money can be circulated through the local economy was when I went into Maison Mes Amis to buy a coffee last week. I buy a coffee, Maison pay me for their advert and we go into Maison again for lunch and a coffee. That same £1 has now been to Maison twice, no shareholders involved, no going to China to pay manufacturers, simply an example of the money staying local.
“Talking about the 10% element, I attend the St Thomas’ monthly Food Fairs (both as a visitor and a producer of home made preserves and cakes) - this is an easy and enjoyable way in which people can achieve their 10%!” Stuart Robinson
How else has the 10% challenge changed things? I now write my shopping list in a completely new way. Rather than basing it around the layout of the supermarket, I now arrange it, as below, chunking up into the different suppliers I can use. It still includes a supermarket shop but just for the stuff that tends to be in tins or boxes. The rest I’m buying from the fruit and veg stalls on the market, the nut stall in the temporary market hall, and from the butchers or local farm shop. What we’re also doing, to keep it cost effective, is bulking out our meals with more vegetables , beans and lentils etc... What I’ve noticed is how little extra time it’s actually taking to shop, trips are arranged around the daily routine but I do have to remember to carry more cash as the cards aren’t so welcome! Thank you to everyone who’s shared their ideas. If you want to tell us about your 10% experiences - please email us or post a comment on facebook or twitter.

Roughing It for the YMCA By Matt Kane
Earlier this month, I joined about thirty people to sleep rough for a night in Nottingham’s Trinity Square in aid of the YMCAs nationwide Sleep Easy initiative.
P
erhaps I was trying to impress my girlfriend (her best friend is the Communications Manager at the Charity’s Nottinghamshire Branch) or maybe I was feeling fearless after a couple of beers when I agreed. Either way, kipping outside in the freezing cold doesn’t seem such a bad prospect two months prior to the event, but reality hits when you’re climbing into your sleeping bag in the open air, on the cold pavement, at half past two in the morning. I’ve never had to worry about having a roof over my head and have never seriously thought about the fact that others don’t have it as easy as me or that homelessness can happen to anyone. In England alone, over 75,000 young people are homeless and in the city of Nottingham youth homelessness is on the rise. Of course, not all homeless people sleep rough at night. Some who are forced to sleep outside walk at night to keep warm whilst sleeping in the day. Many do find temporary accommodation and there are also the ‘hidden homeless’ who stay on family and friends’ sofas without ever contacting the authorities, often going under the radar.
The YMCA provides emergency accommodation for rough sleepers as well as a range of accommodation for young people who might need help in other areas of their lives. They also provide young people with other types of support including training in basic life skills, drug and alcohol counselling and support for those at risk from exclusion at school. Like many charities, the YMCA is confronted with an increasing number of cases at a time when funding is drying up and the squeeze on people’s wallets is getting ever greater. That is why events such as the Sleep Easy are vital in raising much needed funds and awareness. Of course, before an event like this, there are a number of practical considerations to bear in mind in addition to the fundraising. And I left it quite late before giving much thought to how many layers I would wear, perhaps in the vain hope that the temperature might rise. I think I settled on four layers and two pairs of socks. I regret not wearing more socks… The night itself was very well organised. The YMCA fenced off a sizeable section of Trinity Square which was staffed with security all night. It served as a good location as Nottingham is notorious for having few public toilets, so being round the corner from the YMCA’s offices meant we could nip there. After registration and photos at 8 o’clock it was time to hit the streets in teams asking the theatre goers and half-drunk people of Robin Hood country to empty their pockets and give to this very worthy cause. Nottingham on a Friday night is as rowdy and as raucous as it gets and, in many ways, the bucket-collecting was more of a challenge than the sleep out. Yet again, however, we found people were amazingly generous and in good spirits. So much so that when we came to count what we’d collected, in amongst all the pound coins and spare change were a number of ten and twenty pound notes! By the time I reached my bed, consisting simply of a sleeping bag inside a cardboard box, it was about 2.30am.

The temperature had dropped noticeably throughout the night and I consoled myself that, unlike last year, at least it had stayed dry! Well, almost. Just as everybody was trying to sleep, one female party-goer decided to relieve herself close to where we were laid which then trickled down the sloped square and only narrowly missed me. Remember what I said about Nottingham and public toilets?
sleeping rough and I have to say, it’s something I won’t be in a rush to do again. I felt fortunate that it was only one night. Some people are forced to do it every night, without several layers of clothes, without the fenced off security guarded area, and often all alone against the world… If you’re reading this before the cut-off date of 30 March you can sponsor me at http://my.artezglobal.com/personalPage. aspx?registrationID=420953. It would be greatly appreciated.
In total with sponsorship and money collected on the night, the event raised over £8,000, more than £1,500 on last year which is fantastic given the financial climate. And, for those who are considering doing it, go ahead and give it a try. I agree it doesn’t quite have the appeal of sleeping in your own bed at home, but it does give you a slight insight into what it’s like

Despite this, and waking up two hours later, probably the coldest I’ve ever been, I managed to maintain my knack of being able to sleep just about anywhere and raised over £400 in the process.

Playground to Podium A breakfast presentation by Ian Drake, CEO of British Cycling Hosted by Derbyshire Sport Cycling is big news, and as a former minority sport, has recently exploded into mainstream. With so many disciplines to choose from there really is something for everyone! On 28 Feb I blagged my way into a presentation run by the Derbyshire Sport ICON Programme. The presenter was Ian Drake CEO of British Cycling since 1998 and an instrumental figure in bringing cycling success to the UK during the Olympics and in the Tour de France. The success stems from solid investment and coaching, which took a major step forward in 1997 when lottery funding boosted the sport. Ian has been involved in cycling throughout his career, starting as a teacher at the Frederick Gent School in Derbyshire he established a ground breaking after-school cycling club. He worked as a consultant with British Cycling alongside his teaching, but it wasn’t until 1998 that he joined the organisation full-time. Ian helped establish a ‘playground to podium’ pathway which was introduced in 2000 - and proved vital in the performance of British Cycling in the Beijing Olympics where the cycling medals rocketed to 34 in Olympic and Paralympic Cycling - compared with a total of only five medals secured in almost 85 years!! In 2009 Ian was appointed CEO at British Cycling, the head man for the 2012 games, his main responsibility being to increase participation and develop the pathway. Ten years ago cycling was a minority sport in the UK, way down below mainstream sports like football, cricket and rugby, today there is a major change as cycling has the highest new uptake of any sport in 2012 (estimated 1 million new riders) followed by athletics, gymnastics and tennis. The time honoured UK favourite sports are struggling to maintain their share or are seeing numbers of participants fall as youngsters change allegiance. Before the 2012 games British Cycling organised cycling events which took place across the country. The ‘Sky Rides’ saw city centres closed off with cyclists enjoying the chance to try out traffic free roads, and the ‘Go Ride’ events aimed at school children encouraged kids to have a go at racing on a marked course on a local field with British Cycling coaches leading the sessions. It is believed that these events followed by the Olympics may have helped to get over 1 million people back on their bikes. Page 36 • www.s40local.co.uk
So what’s the secret of the step change in cycling success? Ian explained an amazingly simple approach - get more people cycling, give young cyclists more opportunities to get involved and diversify into all disciplines. “After the Beijing Olympics people did question if we’d done it too quickly?” Ian outlined, “The UCI were so concerned we saw regulation changes as they thought the UK team were simply too dominant. We saw a real changes in the profile of the team, at Sydney the average team age was 30 but in 2012 this was down to 24, demonstrating that talent is being spotted and entered onto the pathway to podium program much quicker and earlier.” Ian’s background in after school clubs means he knows how to get kids involved in sport “to get kids riding at school I would set up a race series that could take place on a school field and create a mountain bike circuit round the grounds. It was about getting kids participating” says Ian. Another important factor in the success has been the role of Manchester and the Velodrome as the central base for British Cycling, with riders moving to Manchester to be part of the program and work with the coaches and support who are all based in the same central location. Other sports are looking carefully at this approach to see if it will work for them, centralising all the talent, coaches and support in one location with excellent facilities. “Manchester used to refer to the velodrome as the white elephant, today it’s known locally as the medal factory” comments Ian. After Beijing many people said the team couldn’t do it again, the pressure was on for 2012 but British Cycling has shown that 2008 was no oneoff and to add to the success achieved the UKs first Tour de France winner in Bradley Wiggins, “seeing Bradley Wiggins pull on the yellow jersey was, for me, the most powerful moment, it lifted the whole team” adds Ian. You only have to look at the profile of cyclists to see how things are changing - knighthoods for Sir Chris Hoy, Sir Bradley Wiggins and Sir David Brailsford (Performance Director at British Cycling and Team Sky Manager) and Mark Cavendish and Bradley Wiggins voted by the British public as BBC Sports Personalities of the year. Back at a local level, ICON and Sport Derbyshire are supporting and funding some regional talent to ensure they can dedicate to their sports and fulfil their potential. Pathway, Emily Watson-Thoday from Matlock is tandem partner for a partially sighted rider in the National Paracycling team and Rosie Blount from Breadsall, Derby is on the Olympic Academy Program for track riders, after taking a national title in the track championships. What can you do if you want to get involved locally? I was disappointed that the majority of the cycling interest was based in Derby, seemingly with little to offer in Chesterfield, but there’s no reason why we couldn’t feature on the British Cycling map. With British Cycling offering coaching courses it just needs interested people to sign-up and establish the courses and cycling sessions. In the meantime though - there are still loads of opportunities to get on your bike:
Then we have facilities like: • The BMX track at Brimington. • Children’s pump track at Millhouses Park. • Local road cycling clubs including Chesterfield Spire, Bolsover and District, Bolsover Wheelers and Staveley Wheelers. • Pelican evening rides- every Wednesday from 5:45 contact 01246 767078. • Sherwood Pines trails just a 35 minute drive away. • Linacre Woods with it’s circular bridleway. • Not forgetting the Peak District just on our doorstep with cycle friendly trails and some big hills!
• Go Ride conferences are taking place to see what will be delivered this year
Looking forward there’s the extension of the Hipper Valley trail up to Holymoorside from Somersall Park, making cycling, as a means of transport more accessible and safer - thanks to work by the Chesterfield Cycle Campaign, and in October 2014 we will welcome a new ‘state of the art’ velodrome to Derby!
• Breeze rides for ladies take place locally each month (see regular events) - run by Michelle Meikle 0772 588 5151.
... and of course if you need new gear there’s a couple of great shops on Chatsworth Road that can help!
• Sky Rides are taking place all over the country (unfortunately nothing within a 20 mile radius of Chesterfield on the website right now)
• Cycle Speedway run for kids of all ages by a British Cycling coach at Graves Park. Page 38 • www.s40local.co.uk

Chesterfield British Cycling might not have many Chesterfield based activities in place at the moment, but there’s still plenty going on. Here are some cycling related updates from four local organisations Wheely Fun Wheels, the Peak Park, Chesterfield Spire Cycling Club and Igloo Cycles.
Wheely Fun Wheels Alastair Meikle is the man behind local business Wheely Fun Wheels and a driving force in the Chesterfield Cycle Campaign so is a good ambassador for all things two wheels (and in some cases more).
2013. The Festival will be co-ordinated by the Peak District National Park Authority, High Peak Borough Council, Derbyshire Dales District Council and Staffordshire Moorlands District Council. The Peak District Cycle Festival will include a wide variety of guided rides and cycle related activities throughout the week and help encourage people to come, cycle and stay in the area. All events will be listed on the Peak District cycling festival web pages and will be available for download at the beginning of the summer. Starting small scale it’s hoped the event will grow year on year, with the first year activities forming the fringe and a major international event forming the core of the festival from the second year onwards.
“We’re not really sport orientated but in the last year we have trained over 1400 Y5 and Y6’s in North East Derbyshire to Bikeability Level 2 and over the next year we expect that to increase to over 1600. The local School Sport Partnership and ourselves will be rolling out a programme of balance bike training at infant level in schools next winter. We have funding to provide holiday cycling clubs and we hope to have Go-Ride accreditation for that shortly. Basically all the stuff is in place, it just has to come together and as ever it’s getting a bit late for this summer!” says Alastair.
We hope to bring you more on this as plans unfold but for now you’ll have to make do with dusting off the bike and waiting for the sun to shine... although this isn’t compulsory!
In partnership with Transition Chesterfield Alastair and Andy Holdaway are running a bike maintenance workshop for £2 a person, on 21 April at Loundsley Green Community Centre, with the potential to become a regular workshop and community bike recycling project. Call 01246 210704 or email workshop@ transitionchesterfield.co.uk to book a place.

GOLF:
Isn’t it just whacking a ball? George Woolgar is a Tournament golf professional attached to Chesterfield Golf Club and has just received sponsorship from Brampton Manor Country Club.
B
rampton Manor are providing membership and support with training and nutrition, things you wouldn’t necessarily associate with golf training. But as George explains, golf is about more than just hitting the ball. “Before a tournament I’ll warm up for about an hour, then my round might take five hours, maybe more. This is followed by a warm down and often a long trip home with flights and time zones to content with. I then have to fit in time to do gym work and normal practice sessions”. All sports pros can benefit from time in the gym with a tailored training schedule. I chatted about this to Matt Gratton, Leisure Manager at Brampton Manor and the only sport we could come up with where additional physical strength and endurance wouldn’t enhance your performance was Darts! As I spoke to George the benefits quickly became clear “The time on the course is tiring and it’s important to approach the last tee as relaxed and refreshed as the first, and the difference a solid fitness level can have is amazing” says George, “because of my golf, my body strength is out of balance - my top right hand side is much stronger than my left and the reverse is true with my lower body, it’s the impact that the turn of my swing has on my body”. “Nutrition is also key, I need to make sure my body is correctly fuelled and I’m eating the right things at the right time. The team at Brampton Manor are working with me on this and I’m hoping to see improvements this year.” But the difference between winning and losing can be the psychological Page 50 • www.s40local.co.uk
side this can be affected without the right advice on nutrition. It’s about managing the pressure you put yourself under when playing “When practising I can putt a four foot putt all day, but when you’re at the last green and this ball could win an event, the pressure is huge, there might be a crowd watching, the players are watching the TV cameras are on you and on top of this there is the prize money” says George “and you need to finish in the top dozen or so just to cover your costs. It might look glamorous but life as a golf pro is hard work both physically, financially and mentally. The support and work with Brampton Manor is fantastic, a huge help to me on the circuit” adds George. George is 27 and turned Professional in April 2008. Unfortunately he suffered an injury last year that put him out for 7 months, and is having to work this season to get himself back to the Challenge Tour and his main goal, the European Tour. In golf there are three pro levels, with the European Tour being the top level for players such as Lee Westwood the level below is the Challenge Tour, and below that the Euro Pro Tour. Last year George won his first Euro Pro Tour event and will be starting this years season back on the Euro Pro Tour. He will be playing some challenge Tour invites from last year’s win as his injury stopped him from playing those events and progressing to the next level. I’m hoping to bring you further updates on George’s progress, it’s great to see talented local sports people being supported by our local businesses. We wish George lots of luck for the coming season. You can follow George’s progress on his website www.georgewoolgar.co.uk and Twitter.

Elouise Boam has just opened for business near the bottom of Chatsworth Road opposite Majestic Wines! This new venture realises an idea that’s been forming in Elouise’s mind for years. She explained “I’ve worked locally at Robinson’s for the last 15 years but I’ve always wanted to run my own business and the time was now right for me to give it a go. My pet supplies business, Pet Purrfect, is the result. I love pets, Maisy, my Patterdale Terrier, is my companion. My business caters for pets including dogs, cats, small pets such as rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, ferrets and wild birds. I sell food, supplies, accessories, beds, toys, treats, bird feeders and hay and straw, and offer a local independent alternative to the supermarkets and large retail chains”.

C&J Book Keeping are new to S40 Local, but wanted to make businesses aware of a change in payroll processes that could impact them. “On the 6 April 2013 a dramatic change will take place to how payroll is processed. Employers will have to ensure payroll software is updated to process Real Time Information (RTI). This will mean that every time payroll is processed HMRC will be notified of PAYE and NI deductions at the time the employees are paid, rather than once a year” says Caroline. “All data held for employees must be kept up to date, especially name, date of birth and National Insurance numbers.” “To be ready to report RTI on 6 April, you will need to make sure you either have the appropriate payroll software - with the RTI function, installed or arrange to use a payroll provider, like C&J Book Keeping. “Time is running out.” C&J’s business card is on page 80 should you want to get in touch.

Garden Tips
April:
10 things to do in the garden By Colin Harrison of Transition Chesterfield
By the time you read this we will be moving into spring and the weather should be noticeably warmer. However the continuing cold means that most garden jobs are best left at least two weeks past the time they would normally be done, even if just for the comfort of the gardener! What follows assumes that we do finally get to something that is recognisable as spring…. 1. Early potatoes should already be planted, although the cold weather means that this may not be the case. Main-crops normally go in around mid-April, but remember that they’re frost-tender and may need some protection if the overnight temperature threatens to drop below zero. 2. Lots of vegetables can be sown now - check the seed packets. They will mostly be hardy types (carrots, beetroot, parsnips etc.) and can go direct into the soil, but that may depend on if you’ve had the chance to prepare the beds for them. Never sow into frozen soil. 3. If you’re not confident about growing things from seed, there will be lots of vegetable seedlings available in garden centres. However, they will have been raised in a fairly benign environment and won’t appreciate going straight outside, especially if it’s chilly, so they need to be slowly acclimatised by being protected at night – but don’t bring them into a heated house. 4. Seeds for tender vegetables can be sown indoors; tomatoes, courgettes, squashes, peppers and so forth. Again, you can buy young plants from garden centres but they can be quite expensive for what you get, plus it’s far more satisfying to grow things from scratch. 5. Hardy annuals and herbs should also be sown outside now. Some seeds store reasonably successfully for several years, but others don’t; parsley won’t keep at all, but if you let a plant set its own seed every year you’ll never be without it. 6. As the days warm, anything in pots will need to be watered more often, especially houseplants, which should be moved away from direct sunlight. Start including a weak feed, increasing to full strength as new growth starts to sprout. 7. If you have fruit trees and shrubs that aren’t pruned during winter they may be the sort that need to be done now, e.g. gooseberries and plums. There is no single rule that covers what needs to be pruned when, so either check online or visit the library. 8. Lawns should be growing faster now, so may require more frequent and lower cuts. You can also repair any patches that have appeared over winter by sowing seed into them; loosen the soil a bit first, and rake the surface. Protect any newly-sown areas against pigeons. 9. There’s not really a month when you shouldn’t be weeding, but it’s much more important now, especially as some weeds produce their seeds so early. But don’t attack too vigorously – check that what you’re about to remove isn’t a shoot of something that’s supposed to be there. 10. Mulching with compost is by far the best way to feed your garden, but if you can’t produce enough or haven’t got a good source, most established plants will appreciate some general fertiliser spread around the area above where their roots will be, and gently forked in – don’t overdo it and damage the roots themselves. Crown Green Bowls
Celebrating 100 Years at the Terminus
Some of you may remember the Terminus Hotel. Built on Chatsworth Road in 1906, next to the end of the tramline that ran from Chesterfield town centre to Brampton. Owned by the original Brampton Brewery, the Terminus Hotel developed the plot of land opposite as a garden and bowling green for the recreational use of its staff and customers. And in 1913 The Terminus Bowling Club was formed, initially, by a group of railwaymen. On formation they had 23 members - today membership number stands at 83, the youngest being in their early teens, the oldest being a few years older! On 13 April the green hosts it’s Annual Open Day - a great opportunity to try out Crown Green Bowling. They will be on the look out for new members so again, if you’d like to try your hand with a local club, that’s the day to call in. Looking back at their history, the club had strong membership and survived two world wars and a major recession. In 1956, Warwicks and Richardson soaked up Brampton Brewery but continued tenancy of the green. It wasn’t until 1976 that a problem occurred - John Smith’s who had taken over Warwicks and Richardson in 1962 decided they no longer needed the bowling green! A grant from the sports council was secured and trustees appointed . The ground was purchased in 1977 for the princely sum of £6000, David Dolman, today’s centenary President, was one of the four original trustees. The Terminus Bowling ground was very much a man’s domain, even the annual dinner was men only until as late as 1951. Various ‘discussions’
The Tram used on the Terminus’ Logo is on display at Crich Tramway museum and was recently brought out for members to photograph for use on the new flag.
took place over the years with regard to allowing ladies - not just to play and be members, but even to allow them entry to the grounds to watch their partners play! But each time it was deferred for one reason or another, toilet facilities being one of the main issues.
Crown Green Bowling is a ‘healthy sport’ in Chesterfield where we have access to at least nine local greens. Within a small radius are The Terminus, Chesterfield (Beetwell Street), The Britannia, Holymoorside, Robinsons Dam, Queens Park, Boythorpe Inn and both, Old and New Whittington greens. In 1985 the club secured a grant from the Sports Council to remove the corrugated steel screen and urinal from the corner of the ground and install a new club house. The grant “was for the installation and connection of toilet facilities to promote bowls for women”. But, even with the new facilities it was 2009 before ladies were accepted as full members of the club. After this slow start, today lady membership is healthy and positively encouraged, they can even play without a male accompanying them! In the spirit of modernisation, the club has recently established a relationship with Old Hall School and on two mornings children from Yr5 and Yr6 attended sessions at the green with child specific apparatus and games. This will become a regular feature on the club’s calendar and it’s hoped some children will stay involved as they progress to Brookfield School, and join in sessions during the summer school holidays. If you can’t make the open day, the club has informal Wednesday morning sessions to encourage new members to come along. The green is open for anyone to turn up and give it a try and there’s always someone on hand to help with bowls and give instruction. On 16 March at the Centenary opening celebration, His Worship the Mayor Cllr Parsons bowled the golden jack for the first game with Centenary President David Dolman and presented the new Terminus flag. The Mayoress was given the honour of opening the new centenary gate. So if you want to see if Crown Green Bowling is for you, there’s plenty of opportunities to give it a go, and you’ll be made very welcome!

Blog
Spring is in the air...
Apparently! Will Jackson’s Blog
I
am so glad that there is yet another reason to be buying chocolate! As much as I like chocolate, even I have to admit that I am finding buying the stuff pretty tiresome! Since Christmas and Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day and now Easter, it’s all getting a bit repetitive.
I am not entirely sure what chocolate has to do with Easter but I am willing to let that go (but only because it involves chocolate!). I get the bunny thing, ie the symbolism of fertility and I think I even get the egg thing, ie the start of life and as Easter is usually all cracking off at springtime, I think I get the sheep thing too. But I definitely don’t get where the chocolate got involved, not that I am complaining though. Not wishing to waste too much time thinking about it, I have come to the conclusion that the only reason Easter involves chocolate is because there is so much left after the events going off beforehand. Of course, if anyone has any other ideas, by all means let me know! I do know for a fact that after the tirade of chocolate Easter eggs and discovery of prizes from the umpteen Easter egg hunts, children throughout the UK will begin the parent controlled drip feeding of chocolate until well into May, if not June and July. Obviously this will only be providing that strict conditions are met regarding finishing their meals, adhering to bedtimes and that bedrooms are tidied; you have to love blackmail! Not forgetting of course that in the interest of the children’s teeth, a small commission will need to be taken from the vast chocolate hoard by the parents concerned. Easter being on the horizon brings with it a variety of other significant events; Lighter nights, milder weather and more importantly, spring fairs. It seems to have been the longest winter ever this year and I am definitely ready for spring and with it the bargains of bric-a-brac, tombolas and cake stalls. There is always plenty going on around the area and the S40 Local always does a great job of promoting everything and anything worthy of a look in… as I am sure you already know! Let’s face it, nothing beats homemade cake! And if that wasn’t enough, accompanying the cake comes hundreds of jars of homemade jam, marmalade and lemon curd, not to forget the chutneys and pickles! And the term ‘spring clean’ says it all to me. There is no doubt that spring is the kick up the backside we need to shake off those winter blues and get into the New Year. It has to be my favourite season, if not just for the cake! There are also a couple of bank holidays thrown in which, for those who are lucky enough to get the time off work, provides more time at home and about. It’s just a shame that Jack Frost doesn’t seem to get the message; I have to remind myself that it is indeed late March when my car tells me it is -1C in the mornings and not early February; but let’s be honest, the British weather has never been anything other than unreliable! So whatever you end up doing over Easter, embrace the spring, embrace the cake and take it easy on the cleaning… unless of course, there is a promise of chocolate upon completion! Oh and with all this talk of chocolate and cake, I must remember to book an appointment with my dentist. Happy Easter! Thanks for reading. Will (www.wj79.wordpress.com)
