Intro Hi
Another four weeks have passed since the last S40 Local dropped through your door and how much have I packed into those four weeks? Answer: Quite a lot! We’ve been lucky enough to have a two week holiday in Lanzorote, somewhere, I have to admit, that has never appealed to me but it has been great to see that large orange ball in the sky we call the Sun. I was impressed with the pace of life there and a particular artist and architect, César Manrique, but more on that next month. Our 10% articles have been generating some feedback and it’s great to know that it’s having an effect - many people have told us how they are making small changes to the way they spend their money and the milkmen we talked about have both picked up new customers. We’ve been informed about places to buy our cheese, how could we overlook the Cheese Factor in town and our local farm shops? Thank you for putting us straight! In this month’s edition I’ve been to see Sonia Kolomijez, who manages Vicar Lane Shopping Centre, to understand how the major retail sector of town is performing. I recognise the need for a mix of businesses particularly in the centre and happily Chesterfield is doing well, some of this is down to the strong drive to support the town centre and keep it alive. We have a new take on the Brampton Mile which now involves cakes and cocktails where it was once just beer! Plus meet the cast of Peak Youth’s, Oliver production, enjoy a brief history of the Half Moon Inn, news of the Chatsworth Road Festival, a call to get involved with the Patient’s Representatives at Chatsworth Road Medical Centre, Derbyshire Open Arts weekend, two years of business at Curleys Products plus all the usual stuff. Having the holiday has meant an extra effort to pull this edition together so if you see me around, then I apologise for the bags under my eyes. Hopefully by the time you read this I’ll have had some sleep! Enjoy the Spring. Paul Chapman.

The Brampton Mile
It’s not all about beer and blokes A fresh take on the Brampton Mile from Hannah Leaning.
E
ven before I really knew where Chesterfield was, before I caught my first glimpse of the Crooked Spire, ‘Doing The Brampton Mile’ was a well-known weekend activity to me. At the time I lived 45 miles due South with a group of friends who would head off on the M1 on a Saturday morning, looking relatively normal and then return, deprived of sleep and dishevelled around 2pm on Sunday afternoon with tales of how The Brampton Mile had once again taken no prisoners and sorted the ‘men from the boys’. Several years, and three children, later I find myself living on the doorstep of this infamous mile of hostelries and married to the man who used to rally the troops together all those years ago. I am sure it will come as no surprise that since moving to Chesterfield, I have been in the position of ‘Brampton Mile Widow’ for the day, more times than I care to remember. But it was only when I walked into town following a coffee in Koo that I realised I was missing a trick. After all, what’s good for the boys is good for the girls and although I was not bothered about earning my Brampton Mile Stripes by sampling almost 20 different beers in as many pubs, I was very keen for a good excuse to get the girls together and do something that was a little bit different, and more importantly, was right on the doorstep. If you love coffee, cake, a great lunch, jewellery, handmade crafts, homewares and supporting your local independent traders, then spending Saturday on the Ladies Brampton Mile (LBM) could be just what you’re after. I was lucky enough to meet a fabulous group of ladies through our local NCT toddler group and we have all gathered to do The LBM on two occasions and it is now a firm fixture in our increasingly busy diaries. And yes, the boys get to be Brampton Mile Widowers and have a great ‘day off’ with our collective fourteen offspring.
Page 4 • www.s40local.co.uk
To get the ball rolling we had an early lunch in Koo, they sell a great range of super tasty dishes (the Koo Bistro chips are a must!) in a lovely relaxed atmosphere, if it’s sunny grab a table outside and enjoy watching the world go by or wrap up in one of their cosy blankets. After a glass or two of Pinot, we popped into Libby’s Next door, a homeware cavern of antique and contemporary treasures. Next is Moo Interiors over the road, the retail proof that size doesn’t matter! I love the unusual quirky items they have on offer, from felt buzzy bee kiddie’s slippers, to lamps, letters and hearts in all shapes and sizes, all displayed beautifully on French style one-off pieces of furniture.
Pictures: From left, down, across and up - Delicious Caesar salad at Koo Bistro; The Brampton Mile Ladies; Searching for treasures in Moo Moo; No LBM would be complete without a trip to visit Deirdre at Created Gallery; You can always find a perfect party gift at Pooky and getting the best angle of the Flowerhouse and it’s fabulous original artwork by Urban Canvas by laying on the pavement (the things I do for S40)! Over page: Down and across - We have no idea what was in it, but the cocktail at Maison Mes Amis was delicious; Helping pull a Brampton Brewery pint – well we had to have a few beers as well! and as the day turned into evening, we were, one would argue, a little worse for wear, as I am sure the karaoke chap at the Anchor would testify.
Nestled amongst this section of shops is Created Gallery which is exactly what it says on the tin, a gallery with wall to wall creative treasures, lots of them produced by local artists. From screen prints to glassware, to delicate textiles and exquisite pieces of jewellery, you can feel the passion and creativity that goes into making the goods on sale. If you are already working up a thirst, you can stop in at Nonsolovino, or the Real Beer Corner which is a superb place to sample beers from our local and regional independent brewers. If you’re still hankering for liquid refreshment, take a mini detour off Chatsworth Road and visit the Rose & Crown and The Britannia by turning left next to Tutu. Both pubs sell Brampton Brewery’s latest offerings, and have a wonderfully welcoming atmosphere. On this occasion our retail therapy radar was on full power, so with our purchases in hand and a giddy spring in our step, we headed down to the next section of shops. The part of the Ladies Brampton Mile where the road splits is a mini mecca of delightful finds, from the gorgeous children’s toys, teddies and treats at Pooky, and the kiddy bargains at Lilypad to the quirky homewares at Harleys and beautiful items over the road at Flowerhouse. I love this little section of Chatsworth Road so much, that I have Continued over.

Article
Brampton is an area to the west of Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Originally a village separate from the town, it became absorbed into it over time due to urban sprawl. It is centred around Chatsworth Road, the main aertial road that connects the town with the Peak District and Manchester. The area was known for the ‘Brampton Mile.’ This was a stretch of pubs, approximately a mile long, where a night out would include one drink in each bar. There are now fewer pubs in the area and many of the buildings have been demolished to make way for new businesses and housing development. From Wikipedia.
opened a studio for my company Little Fish Events. It’s just above Pooky, so next time you need original stationery and party ware, make sure you come up and say hello! By this point in the proceedings, the ladies and I were in need of our afternoon staple… the cake, so we took a tour into Maison Mes Amis for a slice of coffee chocolate cheesecake and a cocktail which, as always, hit the spot! We never seem to catch Northern Tea Merchants before it closes, but if a refreshing cup of tchar is your thing, and you want to be wowed by a vast range of cakes then make sure you start the LBM in plenty of time! Happily satisfied with a sugary fix we continued along to the Tramway, another Brampton Brewery hostelry, where we remained for more than one drink to give our weary feet a chance to rest – why oh why do we wear heels on an occasion such as this? Another of life’s mysteries! If you’re blessed with a cloud free day, then there is a little sun trap at the rear of the Tramway, perfect for catching the last rays of afternoon sun. From here, all the way up to Westbars roundabout there’s a plethora of pubs to quench your thirst. I have to be honest in admitting that the ladies and I were a little wobbly by this point, but I clearly remember having an enormous amount of fun singing Abba anthems in the Anchor. It’s so easy to miss what’s on your doorstep, and organise a girl’s get together in a different town or city, but next time you want time to catch up with the ladies in your life and share a little shopping and a few drinks, I can highly recommend a stroll along Chatsworth Road, stopping wherever takes your fancy. I know for sure that this Autumn the six of us will be sampling the delights of the Ladies Brampton Mile once again!

Financial Update
Do you have the Will to protect your wealth from Inheritance Tax?
Some Inhertance Tax thoughts from Peter Boardman, Somersall Financial Management Ltd. The days are long gone when IHT could reasonably be regarded as a tax only for the very wealthy. Many of us still think that we are unlikely to be affected by it, but many of us would be wrong. The IHT threshold – officially known as the ‘nil rate band’ – currently stands at £325,000. Consider what your house is worth today. For many people, this alone is enough to exceed the threshold. Married couples and civil partners can pass assets to each other without paying IHT, while they are alive or on their death. A fairly recent change of rules also allows them to transfer any unused portion of their nil rate band when they die. So it’s now possible for the surviving spouse or partner to leave assets of up to £650,000 before IHT becomes payable. (It’s important to remember that the full nil rate band of £650,000 is not available to unmarried couples.)
Thankfully, there are a number of things you can do to reduce any liability. A good place to start is with your Will. Everyone should consider having a Will and, just as important, one that is IHT-efficient. If you don’t, or if there are mistakes in the drafting, the laws of intestacy
may distribute your assets in ways that you never intended, or your estate may be taxed in ways that could otherwise have been avoided. It’s estimated that UK taxpayers waste £448m a year in IHT payments which could have legally been avoided by simple tax-planning measures when drawing up a Will (Source: Telegraph 28/4/12). If you own a business, your Will should cover your business assets unless you have made appropriate succession plans with your partners. And you should review it whenever your circumstances change – a subsequent marriage, for example, automatically invalidates a Will. Your Will is the place to take advantage of the new rules on charitable legacies, effective from the 6th April 2012. If you bequeath money to a charity, it will not be subject to IHT – that’s not new. But from now on, if you leave 10% or more of your taxable assets to charity, what remains attracts IHT at a reduced rate of 36%. In fact, the lower rate of 36% could apply even when less than 10% of your estate is left to charity if, for instance, the estate includes trust assets. The rules are complicated and therefore it’s important to take professional advice. There are other well-proven methods to reduce IHT, and one is making gifts during your lifetime. These reduce the size of your estate and therefore the size of any IHT bill. Some gifts depend on you surviving at least another
seven years before they officially move outside your estate. There are, however, some very useful exceptions to this rule which mean that the assets move outside your estate, and beyond the reach of IHT, immediately. Every tax year, for example, you can make gifts totalling £3,000. On top of that, each year you can make small gifts of up to £250 to any person and to as many people as you like. Investing that sum annually into a Junior ISA for a grandchild or godchild would accumulate into a muchappreciated sum by the time they turned 18. Potentially the most generous exemption for IHT purposes, however, is the one that allows you to make regular gifts as part of normal expenditure from your income. These payments must be part of a regular pattern and may not come out of your capital. You must also keep enough income to maintain your standard of living, so you are unable to make gifts out of your salary or pension if you then have to raid your capital to pay the bills. Gifts that qualify as normal expenditure out of income have no specified maximum, though they will be limited automatically by the size of your surplus income. While the exemption doesn’t have to be claimed during your lifetime, keeping records of any gifts will help your representatives to claim it retrospectively. Remember that IHT is a complex area and, without professional help, it can be very easy to get things wrong.

Peak Performance Introducing the Cast of Oliver
P
eak Youth is the junior section of Peak Performance, a local theatre group who S40 introduced you to last year. Peak Youth formed about five years ago after a group of youngsters took part in the adult’s production of “The King and I”. They enjoyed it so much they wanted to continue performing and so formed the group, their first performance being Bugsy Malone. The group is now about 50 strong and ranges in age from 8 to 18, with children coming together from across Derbyshire, all having a passion for performance. In the up and coming production of “Oliver” all parts are taken by members of the youth group, not a single adult in the performance. The cast consists of Josh Holmes - Fagin, pictured top; Jess Wood Nancy; Sam Wood - Noah; Kai Jackson - Artful Dodger, pictured below centre; Oliver Favell - the nasty piece of work Bill Sykes and Charles Barlow - pictured bottom right from Wingerworth plays Oliver. Also pictured are Jacob blood - Mr Bumble corner, Melissa Shaw - Widow Corney, 2nd from top and Tom Asquith - Mr Brownlow, 3rd from top. Pamela Needham has been responsible for all choreography, the show is produced and directed by Mike Spriggs and is accompanied by a ten piece orchestra lead by John Morris. All this is set in Fagin’s den and London Bridge with the cast in fantastic colourful costumes. The group has been rehearsing since Christmas, combining rehearsals with some charity events to raise money for Romanian charities at St Thomas’ Brampton singing songs from Oliver and other musicals. Peak Youth practise weekly on Tuesdays at Whittington Moor Methodist Church from 6pm till 7:30pm and they are always looking for new members. If you or your children are interested in getting involved please call Mike Spriggs on 01246 233475. If you’d like to see some members of Peak Youth performing before their production of Oliver, you can see them in the Merry Widow, being performed at the Pomegranate by Peak Performance, the Senior group, at the end of May.

The Half Moon Sets
A brief history of the Half Moon by John Hirst of Brampton Brewery The old Half Moon public house finally ended its existence last month when the building was demolished. Although not used as a pub for almost 45 years, the building had changed very little externally, finally being used as a hostel. For anyone not aware that this was a pub, it stood on Chatsworth Road between ‘Black Eyed Susan’ and the Council bungalows (almost opposite the Alma Inn). The pub would have originally come into existence sometime after 1830, when a new type of pub – the beer house – was introduced by the government to counteract heavy consumption of gin at the time. The idea was to draw drinkers
Page 30 • www.s40local.co.uk
away from the devastating effect gin was having on the population, these new pubs just sold beer (sometimes cider and wine) but did not serve spirits, that the old established inns and alehouses were allowed to sell. It is not known if the pub was originally called the Half Moon, but between 1869 and 1871 it was called the Full Moon. At this time the pub was leased to the Brampton Brewery Co., although it was later bought by William Stones brewery of Sheffield, who owned it until its closure in the late 1960s. The pub was rebuilt in 1906/7 and had further major alterations carried out in 1917. The beer house licence
it carried was finally upgraded to Full Licence status in March 1952. One landlord of the pub, Elijah Salt, was one of the best known ‘characters’ in Brampton. He took the licence in 1924 after a 13 year stint in the Griffin Inn, a little further down Chatsworth Road. During his time in the pub he built up a very well known catering business, running outside bars. He ran the beer tent for the first County Cricket match to be played in Chesterfield in 1913, a service he provided until his death. He also had bars at the Chesterfield Racecourse, Flagg races, and Ashover show. He died in December 1951, after 27 years as landlord of the pub, aged 79. He left a widow, Ellen, two sons and six daughters.
The photos show: the Pub in August 1929, the event being the wedding of one of his daughters; Elija Salt and finally the building in 1981.

Party Time Mum of two, Josephine Webster at Model Mentor has repeatedly faced the difficult question, how shall we celebrate the children’s birthdays this year? We all want to make their day one to remember, something they’ll enjoy and their friends will be rushing to talk about on Monday morning at school. So after another sleepless night, three years ago, Josephine came up with the idea of catwalk parties. Little or big princesses alike come along to be pampered, giggle, play games, put on a little show and have fantastic professional photographs to remember the day by. The parties have been a huge success with both children and parents. Based at junction 29a off the M1, at Markham Vale, we provide a safe fun environment where you can dress up, play model on the catwalk and strike a pose for the professional photographer. For the older girls they offer hen night parties, party girls get glammed up with hair and makeup whilst enjoying a champagne cocktail, before their mini photo shoot. The cherry on the cake for all of the catwalk parties is the professional group photograph for all party guests plus a photo of themselves for the party girl or boy. All the photographs from the day are loaded onto a private online viewing gallery to show family and friends. A truly special and unique party idea.

Vicar Lane The secret’s in the mix
S40 Local speaks to Sonia Kolomijez, Vicar Lane Shopping Centre Manager
W
hen announcing the appointment of Mary Portas to conduct an independent review into the importance of our high streets the government stated, “The high street should be at the heart of every local community, bringing people together, providing essential services and creating jobs and investment, so it is vital that we do all that we can to ensure they thrive.” Over the past few editions, through 10% independent, we’ve been encouraging you to support local independent shops by spending £1 out of every £10 with them, rather than supermarkets and retail chain stores. The majority of S40 Local advertisers are small independent traders, many retail outlets being on Chatsworth Road and the immediate area. But at the end of Chatsworth Road we’ve got our town centre, and the retail mix needed to keep a town centre alive is perhaps different. A town centre needs chains to attract people who are looking to buy clothes, shoes, household and electrical goods etc... as well as a mix of independent shops - for people to seek out unique products they couldn’t buy elsewhere. The right mix prevents towns looking the same and creates a reason to travel to a new town, to enjoy a different shopping experience. This month I met Sonia Kolomijez, Centre Manager at Vicar Lane Shopping Centre and Amanda Thomas, Centre Administrator. Vicar Lane is the newer shopping area of town, where H&M, BHS, Superdrug etc are located. Vicar Lane was a multimillion pound investment for Chesterfield in 2000, and Sonia is responsible for the end to end operation of the site marketing the centre both to consumers and potential tenants, building maintenance, customer services, security, the list goes on. Sonia explained her background “My earlier roles involved the management of commercial and residential properties, many centred around projects and delivery. When the opportunity came up to move into Centre Management it seemed like an exciting and challenging area to work. Since then I’ve worked in various towns including, Aylesbury, Walsall, Barnsley, Bristol, France and more locally Sheffield, gaining awards for centre development along the way. I came to Chesterfield and Vicar Lane in 2005.” Page 34 • www.s40local.co.uk
In the late 1990s a tired area of Chesterfield was redeveloped and pedestrianised creating Vicar Lane. The areas demolished included a bus station, St James’ Hall and pubs such as the Commercial Hotel and Red Lion. The original plans were for an undercover enclosed centre but conservation orders for the area meant plans had to be adjusted. If you take a look above the shop fronts along Vicar Lane today the styles of the buildings are all different - styled to give the appearance of individual buildings and not a single development. Above street level the styling is noticeable, Costa and Wilkinsons appear to be part of the new development yet are not, demonstrating how well the centre integrates with its surroundings and preserves original features. “Vicar Lane opened in April 2000” explained Sonia, “this was a new venture for Chesterfield, Vicar Lane offered modern spacious retail units in a new contemporary environment. This was attractive to businesses that may not previously have had the confidence to move to Chesterfield.
Presenting a feeling of confidence in a town is important to investors and helps bring in business and consumers.”
services provided by Vicar Lane works well, we have large, small and independent businesses in the units” explains Sonia.
Today people have the choice of ‘out of town’ retail with convenient free parking or internet shopping delivered to your door. So why do people still visit a town centre?
“Chesterfield has history, culture and many elements that make it unique. We need a way to capture all this and market it, create an experience for the visiting shopper or tourist” she adds.
Sonia believes “There are two key reasons - to shop and to meet with friends. Chesterfield’s centre is a vital hub for the surrounding suburbs and communities, it’s what defines the town” answered Sonia, “to attract people it needs to be fun, entertaining, pleasant and interesting. Shopping isn’t about filling the trolley to the brim and loading the car boot.” Our town centre seemed to go through a bad run earlier this year with a number of closures being announced all at the same time. What’s your view? “It did have a bad run, but the town is still doing well. Vicar Lane only has one empty 400sq foot unit and although HMV has closed, Morrison’s will be opening an M Local food store there soon having recently signed a lease. Chesterfield has a great offer but I do think we need to be more verbal about it and make sure Chesterfield is high on the list of priorities for businesses and retailers. There is room for more retail but we need to work cohesively towards an end goal or vision to make sure it doesn’t negatively impact on what we’ve already got. “Vicar Lane is playing a part in making our town an attractive proposition, the mix of stores and
Looking forward, what plans are there for the centre? “We work with the Tourist Information Centre and when the town holds events we put on street entertainment, street art etc. We are looking at how we can make more use of the performance area outside H&M and working with local schools on arts projects” said Sonia. Speaking to Sonia has given me a different perspective on the town and made me think again about the complex issue of where we shop and where to best spend our money to support Chesterfield as a whole. It was great to hear that Vicar Lane is doing well and to think about the role the high street chains have in making the centre a success. Complemented by the markets and the independent shops I came away thinking perhaps Chesterfield town centre is due a renaissance, it’s only by increasing the footfall and us visiting and shopping there that the place will remain vibrant and colourful. By supporting the town centre we give retail chains and investors the confidence they need to locate here which will further improve the quality of the retail offering in our town.
“Presenting a feeling of confidence in a town is important to investors and helps bring in business and consumers.”

Patient Representatives Update on a project running at Chatsworth Road medical centre By Ken Davis
T
he patients of Chatsworth Road Medical Centre have set up a Patients’ Representatives Group whose aim is to promote the best interests of patients registered with the Medical Centre. It is called ‘Patients’ Representatives’’ The Group is open to all patients and the current volunteers are keen to tell other patients about their work. The volunteers are working on a number of projects to gather patients’ needs and suggestions and this should help improve the services of the Medical Centre. If you have a little time and are keen to see our Medical Centre develop the best services possible then please contact the group with your ideas and suggestions. The Group has written a description of its work which is: “The Representatives will strive to ensure that patients will receive the highest possible standards of care and treatment. To this end, the Group will act as a ‘critical friend’ of the Health Centre. It will consult patients and work with Doctors and Practice staff to help improve the range and quality of services and will complete projects based on the suggestions received from patients and care groups.”
Page 42 • www.s40local.co.uk
The Patient Representatives Group has been set up using the guidelines and recommendations set out by NAPP the National Association for Patient Participation. The group of patients is now working on projects and on other activities to make the Representatives a positive and constructive part of the Practice. Patients’ Representatives or Participation Groups are an important part of the new Health Service Primary Care System. Their role is to gather information about the overall needs and requirements of patients in the GP system and to help decide whether there can be improvements. All the work is channelled through a Locality Group and then on to the Regional Clinical Commissioning Group which is the organisation that decides on the strategic direction for general practice in North East Derbyshire. To be successful the Representatives Group should have as wide a cross section of patients as possible to help it understand the needs of all the patients. The current members are a mix with different backgrounds, ages and experience. There are people who were professionals within the NHS, people who have cared for relatives and others with experience in commerce and government.
One member is Anna Casper and Anna has written a paragraph about why she has joined the Group. “I am a Sixth Form Student at Brookfield Community School hoping to study Medicine at University. Simply put, I joined the PRG because I am interested in healthcare. I was eager to get involved and learn more about the relationship between patients and Doctors in my local community. Being a member of the PRG allowed me to find out about the working of the Practice and the different experiences and perspectives of others. As a young person wanting to be a Doctor I have been able to learn from other members of the PRG. It has been really useful as it has improved my knowledge about the changes that are taking place to the NHS as well as giving me a chance to get to know a wide range of other people who share an interest in healthcare.” Another member, Ian Gerrard was a senior manager in the Ambulance Service and can see benefits to patients and to the Practice if the Group is successful. Current projects are a Communications Project to make sure all patients know that the Group is working for their benefit and that they can contact us with their thoughts, ideas and suggestions. We are also working on how to reduce the time wasted when patients miss appointments and we will be doing surveys of patients that will help the practice understand how it is delivering its services. A future project could be to provide input on patients’ needs to help the doctors select from an increasing base of suppliers within and outside the NHS.

We are learning the ropes and working together on these projects and there will be a formal general meeting soon open to all patients. The Group is taking its role seriously and is working enthusiastically to fulfil its role in the everchanging NHS. However to be successful we need as wide a profile of patients as possible on the Group. When we have a number of completed projects and we are up and running on all cylinders we’ll have a public meeting and an AGM. Please come along to the AGM to see what we do and consider joining the Representatives’ Group. You can join in now by using the contact details below and remember, you don’t have to commit loads of time but if you help the PRG so we get a good cross section of patient’s ideas then we will be able to decide on priorities for future projects. If you want to get involved either contact the Group through the Medical Centre’s Website at www.ourdocs. co.uk/ and go to the Patient Group Page or write to us at: secretary@prgourdocs.co.uk Or leave your details at the Medical Centre marked for the attention of the Patients’ Representatives Group Secretary and we will get in touch with you. 2013 will be the eighth successive Derbyshire Open Arts event, offering countywide art over Spring Bank Holiday weekend – Saturday 25th to Monday 27th May. Last year, 275 artists and craftspeople welcomed over 17,000 visitors at 95 venues.
S
o as we gear up for the 2013 event we’ve provided here a list of the 29 artists that are closest to home - and if you’re wanting to venture further afield to any of the 200+ other artists, or want to find out more you can pick up a free brochure from the tourist information centre or online at www.derbyshireopenarts.co.uk.
Exhibiting in the S40 area; Susanne Haywood will be opening up her Patchwork Studio at 667 Chatsworth Road, where you can see her traditional patchwork quilts and modern art wall hangings and Holymoorside will play host to 16 artists. Holymoorside and Walton Arts Festival chair Ann Grinbergs says: “We are delighted to facilitate this exciting event once again – Derbyshire Open Arts has been a part of our own Festival programme for the last five years. It is a privilege to be sharing in such a wide variety of local talent, we offer a warm welcome to the artists taking part - and look forward to seeing lots of visitors. Refreshments, including ploughman’s lunches, will be available throughout the weekend.” Exhibitions will be open 25, 26 and 27 May from 11am to 5pm daily in Holymoorside United Reformed Church Hall, Cotton Mill Hill, S42 7EJ and in the Village Hall, Holymoor Road, S42 7DX. Lesley Alexander, one of the artists exhibiting at Holymoorside Village Hall explained how she got involved and what it means to her “I first heard about Derbyshire Open Arts a few years after I graduated from Manchester Metropolitan University, having studied embroidery as a mature student. I felt frustrated when I realised that I didn’t know anyone in my local art community. In this annual event, many artists open their studios to visitors but I didn’t have my own work studio. I enquired about exhibiting with other artists and was very lucky to be put in touch with the organiser of the group that exhibits in Holymoorside Village Hall. I first participated in 2010 and found the experience exhilarating and rewarding. Meeting new artists fired my imagination and also led to other exhibiting opportunities. Derbyshire Open Arts gives members of the public a unique opportunity to discover local artists and purchase original pieces of art work. Many visitors are also budding artists themselves and the exhibitors are always ready to share their ideas and many offer workshops to the public.” Research by The Arts Council England demonstrates that the arts are important to people in England with art increasing people’s capacity for life, (helping them to “understand, interpret and adapt to the world around them”) enriching their experience (bringing “colour, beauty, passion and intensity to lives”) and providing a safe site in which to build skills, confidence and self-esteem. Other forms of endeavour do some of these things. Only art does all three. The Arts Council also talks about the role that The Arts contributes to the strength and cohesion of communities. It is seen to foster a sense of place, belonging and community identity and to stimulate pride in the local environment. So whatever your motivation and involvement in the Arts, if you’re either looking for an enjoyable and inspiring activity over the Bank Holiday weekend, or you’re on the lookout for new original pieces, there’s plenty going on in the local area, and further afield across Derbyshire for you to explore and discover.

Business News Polar Windows: Finalist Fitter Scott Higgs, 42, from South Yorkshire, who works for Polar Windows, has been chosen as a finalist in the National Fit Show 2013, held in Telford Birmingham 16 – 18 April.
Tchar: Authentic English Tea Room New to Chatsworth Road Tchar is a new vintage tea room, adjoining Libby’s Gift Shop on Chatsworth Road. Troy McNulty, who previously worked at the Flower House, now runs Tchar. Troy explains “Tchar is a vintage English tea room, where we pride ourselves on great homemade food, with a fantastic selection of homemade cakes, such as Rose cake, Fat Free Spicy Fruit & Apple cake and Blueberry Lime & Almond Drizzle cake to name but a few. Our sandwiches and Panini’s are all freshly prepared and our menu includes soups, quiches, pies and pasta, much of which is served on crockery you might have used at Grandma’s house.” “Our grazing board is proving really popular, an interesting selection of meats, cheese, olives, dips and vegetables all served on an acacia board, with bread for dipping. We’re also keen to make sure everyone is catered for and are developing a diary and gluten free range”, she adds.
The FIT Show Master Fitter Challenge is designed to seek out, recognise and reward the skills of those at the sharp end, the people without whom the window, door and conservatory business could not exist: The Fitters. After a rigorous 4 month selection process, which has seen Scott interviewed, receiving site inspection visits and undertaking online questionnaires, he has secured his place in the final - along with seven others, out of over 2,000 UK wide craftsmen.
Open Mon-Sat 9am-5pm, with last orders at 4.30pm, and Sun 10am-4pm, most of our menu is also available to take away. Troy provides a selection of activities for children, such as biscuit decorating, card making and colouring, whilst Mum and Dad enjoy a relaxing time. There are even complimentary facilities for your dog, with dog parking, a dog drink and a treat. Troy and her close-knit team look forward to welcoming you soon.
Competitors will perform two of three challenges to install windows, doors or conservatory roof with a compulsory third event pitting them against the challenges of rectifying a residential door problem. Scott has been entered for Doors and Conservatory catagories. Scott has worked for Polar Windows for just over three years and has been trained to NVQ level 3 through the company’s staged, compulsory training programme. Scott who’s been a joiner by trade for 20 years, takes great pride in his craftsmanship and attention to detail and will embrace the competition next week. The competition focuses on the Health and Safety aspect of the fit and the standard of craftsmanship rather than speed - skill is the key! Scott has entered two out of the three categories - doors and conservatories, the third category being windows. For any further details contact Polar Windows on 01246 277242.

Made in Chesterfield Curleys Products bespoke Wood and Iron
There’s a risk involved with stepping away from a secure job with a salary and taking the plunge to become self employed. Oliver Curley from Curleys Products did just that and last talked to S40 Local twelve months ago so I caught up with him to see how his business is doing and ask whether he’d recommend being self employed?
“
In a previous S40 Local I explained my recent background” says Oliver, “I have a mechanical engineering background and chose to become self employed shortly after my daughter was born. It was suddenly very important to be close to my home and family and not on a contract at the far end of the country.” Oliver’s local connections led to him setting up shop at the rear of the Britannia Inn making wooden garden furniture and ornaments. This was a good move as he secured early contracts with local pub chains to produce benches and seating. The Britannia’s bowling green proved to be an excellent showroom for his products and it wasn’t long before his range included hanging baskets, together with watering systems, wrought iron work, bespoke iron gates, planters (timber and iron) and a whole host of other items. I would have thought that this was a very seasonal business but with the introduction of the wrought iron range business has been brisk all winter with the manufacture and installation of bespoke gates, fencing planters and decorative ironwork for people. So is being your own boss a good thing?
Page 56 • www.s40local.co.uk
“It has it’s advantages but it’s not all plain sailing, you need to be motivated and focused. People in salaried roles often think it must be great, but it genuinely is hard work, you need to learn new skills and be able to cover every aspect of the business from meeting clients, making the products, overseeing delivery or installation, invoicing, payment collection and not forgetting that I have to make my own tea!” “Right now I’m busy building orders for spring and it’s proved very challenging, any timber treatment or paint has been taking four days to dry before it can be handled again due to the cold weather we’ve had. This makes work very difficult as all the space is taken up with drying materials.” Oliver showed me some of his recently produced items. Replacement iron gates, made to measure, “these items are practically maintenance free being fully galvanised”, he explained, “unlike some wooden items which really need to be stained each year”, railings for ponds and a whole stack of materials ready to be made into planters for the spring. Delivery takes place as far afield as Kent but he’s been very busy around Chesterfield with customers from S40 Local to whom he passes on his thanks, “I’ve made a bespoke scarf stand used for retail display at the Image and Colour Emporium” he comments. Was the move worth it then? “Definitely, I’ve made a living for myself, I’ve no regrets, recommendations are coming in thick and fast, I’m looking forward to the year ahead and I get to see my family more”. Sounds like I need to book him in for 2014!

Garden Tips
May
10 things to do in the garden By Colin Harrison of Transition Chesterfield
Background picture courtesy of Iain McGregor
Although, due to low temperatures, most things in the garden may seem to be well behind their normal growing pattern, they will quickly recover once the weather improves. This may mean a lot for the gardener to do, but, if the sun shines, it’s no real hardship to be outdoors at this time of year. Here are some of the most important jobs that need to be done.
Page 58 • www.s40local.co.uk
1.
If you have a tree or shrub (especially fruiting ones) that produces suckers, pull these off as low down as possible; cutting them will only encourage more.
2.
Thin out raspberry shoots and prune gooseberries. As always, the idea is to make an open framework with an even distribution of fruiting stems all getting a good supply of sunlight and air (often easier said than done).
3.
Sow French and runner beans, cucumbers, pumpkins and squashes. These are tender, so if they produce shoots and there’s the possibility of frost, cover them up.
4.
Sow cauliflower and purple sprouting broccoli for harvesting in winter; they like a long growing season. They are both hardy, so shouldn’t mind a bit of frost, although protecting the newest shoots is probably a good idea anyway.
5.
If you’ve already sown tomatoes and courgettes inside, they can now go outside (as above, protect them from possible frost). As upright (cordon) tomatoes grow, keep an eye open for any sideshoots that form in the angle between the main stem and branches and remove them.
6.
If you’re growing potatoes, earth them up by pulling surrounding soil up around the stems as they grow – this is to prevent tubers forming above ground and going green, which is poisonous.
7.
Support peas with pea sticks, and prepare supports for any other plants (e.g. runner beans) that need them.
8.
In terms of routine maintenance, lawns should now need regular mowing, and keep on top of the weeding. If you’ve been feeding the birds in the winter, don’t stop – the current thinking is that you should do it all year.
9.
Anything growing in pots, either indoors or outdoors, will need regular watering and feeding.
10. Keep sowing salad crops (radishes, spring onions, lettuce etc.) and herbs for regular harvesting.

French Class
Are you interested in brushing up on your rusty French language skills? Chris Webb is gauging whether there would be sufficient interest to start an ‘Almost Beginners’ U3A French class meeting in Walton, time and dates are yet to be decided. It could be
Guinea
you could always
be a
Pig...
I
don’t particularly have a fondness for guinea pigs. In fact I would go as far to say that I didn’t really ever think about them until very recently. You probably think that this is an odd subject to bring to any discussion. Apparently guinea pigs have several different methods of ‘squeaky’ communication but I do feel as though they need a voice; albeit for the purpose of this article anyway. I recently found myself at a farm park with my two children over the Easter holidays and this is when I was confronted with the ‘guinea pig perspective’. One of the attractions of the aforementioned farm park is the opportunity for our beloved little bundles of joy to ‘pet’ a guinea pig for a few minutes. The joy that this opportunity provides to the children is apparent by the bustling prior to the 11:30 petting slot afforded by the farm park. As I stood there at 11:25 with what can only be described as hundreds of other people and their eager yet impatient children, witnessing such queue defying tactics as trampling, elbowing and barging, I noticed the little faces of 30 guinea pigs peering from within the hay. Their expressions were not in any way a reflection of the excitement contained within the faces of the 5 year olds awaiting to get their little hands on them, it wasn’t even a welcoming encouragement for the upcoming affection that they would undoubtedly receive when the gates were flung open at half past eleven. No, this was outright fear. Three times a day, each and every day, these little sombre rodents await the delights of being ‘petted’ in a way that you and I could never imagine. 11:30 arrived. Not soon enough for the children but definitely too fast for the guinea pigs. They knew the time, I could see it in their twitching little faces. Already possessing rather large eyes for such a small creature, I swear that their eyes grew larger
Page 62 • www.s40local.co.uk
with the anticipation. I too joined in the bustling with everyone else (oh the guilt!), channelling my daughter in to a gap in the ‘petting zone’ where she sat eyeing up the possible black, white, beige or ginger contender. Having received her new found yet wiry best friend ‘Tina’, I am proud to say that she petted her very gently. However, that couldn’t be said for little Bradley (whoever that child belonged to). Bradley had other ideas for ‘Fluffy’, a rather nice fluffy (ironically) white guinea pig. Bradley discovered that little squeezes generated a series of little squeaks, almost like a pocket sized bagpipe, I’m not really sure that Fluffy minded though, he/she seemed relatively relaxed throughout Bradley’s rendition of something I couldn’t quite put my finger on. The discovery of the musical guinea pig however wasn’t all that Bradley would find out that day, his instrumental rendition was superceded by the discovery that hay can, in fact, fit up a guinea pig’s nose. Fluffy, at this point, had decided that Bradley’s intentions were not wholly honourable and decided to attempt escape. I have to give Fluffy credit for his/her SAS style escape and credit to Fluffy, he/she managed it, scampering off to join the rest of his/her petrified colleagues. Unfortunately though, the loss of Fluffy appeared to fuel a level of upset in Bradley which resulted in a high pitched whine which put Fluffy’s musical talents to shame. Bradley was immediately compensated with the arrival of a replacement named ‘Star’ (Fluffy was long gone!) and it was at this point that I realised that this was my cue for a quick exit and so decided to battle it out with the hoards in order to stroke a lamb. I don’t really have a point to make, I guess if I did then it would be that, no matter how bad things seem to get in life; you could always be a farm park guinea pig. Take care and as always, thanks for reading. Will Jackson www.wj79.wordpress.com
