Intro Dear All

As I write we’re still in the midst of festival fever on Chatsworth Road, and it’s thrilling to see how the festival has been embraced by people in and around the community. A bit of bad planning from S40 Headquarters, has meant that my print week has fallen on the same week as the festival, meaning I’ve been to less events than I’d have liked, and things have been a little on the busy side. But I did manage to get along to the Nomads of the Black Tent talk at Select Interiors, which lived up to its billing and delivered a fascinating and colourful peek into the tribes of Iran and the production of textiles. The following day I gate-crashed one James Pogson’s tea tasting sessions at Northern Tea Merchants and learnt the art of specialist tea appreciation. What struck me was the amazing breadth and depth of knowledge on Chatsworth Road. In these two businesses alone, I can’t help but feel respect for the passion John and Pam Rhodes from Select Interiors and James Pogson from Northern Tea possess for what they do, translating into fantastic businesses. I hope that in the events that you may have attended you also felt inspired, whilst you learned, experienced and enjoyed the events. I wonder whether you too got to the end of the week feeling a renewed respect for the people we live and work alongside in our local community and a commitment to continue supporting these business with your trade. The Festival Opening Weekend Val Woollven

he Chatsworth Road Festival was blessed with a gloriously sunny weekend for the beginning of the annual community event. Alexis Diouf the Deputy Mayor and his wife Vicky addressed the gathered crowd at the St Thomas’ Centre on Saturday 5 October and blew out the candles on the anniversary cake. The delicious cake, marked the second birthday of the Festival (although this is its third year, it is actually the Festival’s second ‘birthday’). The Food Festival in the Centre was very well attended with queues forming for the wonderful products on the stalls. At 10:30am the Deputy Mayor raised a flag to wave off the Chesterfield Cycle Campaign cyclists (some in Victorian dress) as they set off for a celebratory ‘Cycle In Style’ ride. Later in the morning, Teresa Lambarelli at Cafe Aroma invited people to make their own pizza serenaded by Alan on the accordion. He soon gathered an audience as he played traditional Italian tunes. At JMJ potteries, Janine was skillfully throwing pots and welcoming visitors to have a go as part of the Festival programme. Bunting was out along Chatsworth Road and so were the crowds.

The evening Festival Ceilidh at the St Thomas’ Centre was a sell out. The Brampton Community Band accompanied the traditional dances which were performed with gusto by the enthusiastic gathering. Refreshments of curry and rice refuelled the dancers and everyone went home tired and happy. Sunday was an equally beautiful day. There was a warm welcome from Steve at the Britannia Bowling Club, where the club was holding a convivial competition against the Terminus Bowling Club. They were playing for the Chatsworth Road Festival Bowls Trophy, donated by County Councillor Keith Morgan from the community budget. A relaxed crowd enjoyed this crown green event which starred juniors, veterans and regular team players. There are plans to make this friendly rivalry an annual Festival event.

Back to Chatsworth Road and at Real Ale Corner happy revellers were soaking up the sun and the ale, whilst enjoying superb sausage sandwiches. The ales on offer were very refreshing and Cheryl was a terrific host. There was a happy buzz inside and outside Real Ale Corner. Further down the road, another crowd was entertained by the Cock and Magpie Morris and Chesterfield Garland Dancers while lucky people sat down to an afternoon tea at Tchar. The energetic dancers swirled and jingled in the afternoon sunshine much to the enjoyment of the spectators (and a ferret on a lead!). Many of the Chatsworth Road Festival events have been sold out and there is great anticipation for the rest of the week. Looks like being another successful local business and community Festival. Later in the week the green boules bash at the Rose and Crown was great fun. We threw boules on turf from Saltergate under floodlights. It was very cold and blustery but the atmosphere was friendly and warming. The winners were John and Marion who were very adept at judging the bounce of the boules on the hallowed turf. We ate a well deserved beef stew afterwards courtesy of Jane at the pub and we gave donations to the Guide Dog Association.

Chip Shop Challenge Winner! Brampt on Fish Bar

The Chatsworth Road Chip Shop Chall enge saw the Mayor Cllr Paul Ston e and the Mayoress, Mrs Barbara Wallace judgi ng chips from four chip shops along Chatsworth Road in a blind tasting, Cllr Stone explained "They were all tasty but I chose the ones that just edged it for me; hard luck to the othe r three shops who also produced some great chips!" Sandra Sherriff and Peter Wong were "absolutely thrilled to have won" and added "how they had enjoyed participating and how much interest the competition had generated ."

BOWLS

The Britannia Bowls triumphed by 98-91 over the Terminus Bowls Club in the festival challenge match. However the real winner was sport. The weather was perfect and all of the matches enjoyable. Both clubs enjoyed the event so much that they agreed to turn the fixture into an annual event to tie-in each year with the Chatsworth Road Festival dates. So 2014 will see the Terminus Bowls Club play host. “Thanks to Howard Borrell for doing the presentation and donating the cash for the cup and medals, a great day once again!” S40

ith no formal background in art and her last art lesson at school in year nine, Ellie Depp decided 12 months ago to pick up a paintbrush. Today Ellie is forging her way as an artist.

Living with health problems can be difficult at the best of times. When you know you’re ill it’s not easy, but when you don’t realise it things just go from bad to worse. This is the position Ellie found herself in recently. But today as I’m chatting to this bubbly, confident young woman it’s hard to believe the past has been so traumatic. Living at home with her Mum in Newbold she’s just 21, she finished school and went to University, to study Maths. But here things started to unravel and life simply became too much. The simple things we take for granted; dressing, eating, sleeping started to trigger high levels of anxiety and Ellie slipped further and further into depression. Unable to cope she returned home. “Before Uni and whilst studying I’d work in restaurants to earn money, but when I came home from Uni I had to make a tough decision and quit work to give myself the best chance of recovery. I needed to get my mental health back on track” says Ellie. But this presented a new problem “I couldn’t cope with all the free time, it wasn’t helping and I was bored. Then in October 2012, I was flicking through Instagram pictures when I noticed some artwork by San Francisco based artist Charmaine Olivia, I was completely inspired and knew I wanted to give it a go!” explains Ellie. Ellie describes her first trip to the artist’s suppliers, “I didn’t know what I needed and turned to the shop for advice on painting with acrylics, I was totally overwhelmed. My Mum had to physically hold my hand all the way round the shop, but we managed to leave with some red, blue, white and black paints, brushes and the smallest canvases”. “My first paintings were about escapism and fantasy, they were abstract. I love to escape into a fantasy world and hate the thought that ‘this is it’, that today is all we have to look forward to. I feel there has to be more to it, so I let my imagination take me there.” So 12 month’s on and Ellie has established herself as an artist and business woman. She has artwork on display in two locations, Studio 61 in Holloway near Matlock and the

Cherry Orchard in Belper. With all the turmoil and health problems I ask Ellie how she manages to motivate herself. “It’s like a military operation, I have to be totally organised, my timetable needs to be up to date. It’s still possible that on some days I might not start until midday, but then I can still be working until 5am the following morning” she explains. “I love to paint and would love to paint for the rest of my life, but I also have to make a living, so I have to make a career and create an income”. Just recently and completely out of the blue, Ellie was approached by GQ Magazine to appear in their “Art on the Wall” feature promoting a small number of artists for the December edition, “it’s an audience I would never have thought of approaching” explains Ellie, “but I’m very excited about it and can’t wait to see my work in print.” “I’ve also run a workshop in Sheffield as part of the ‘Art in the Park’ event, the idea was to illuminate the city with artwork and to run simultaneous events around the city” says Ellie. “I gave 100 people equipment to try my pouring techniques with acrylics paints, we had 300 people turn up so had to turn away two out of three people. The event encouraged people to try anything they liked, it was very exciting, even if a little stressful. We had to return the following day to remove paint from carpets after young kids had been running through the overspill paint!” Ellie is hoping to do more workshops from April next year, so keep an eye on her website for details. So next in line Ellie has something closer to home, “We’re installing a pop up shop at St Thomas’ Centre on Chatsworth Road on Sunday 27th October 2013 to show my art. It will be the first time I’ve been able to display my work locally in Chesterfield and be the first opportunity for people to see it firsthand. Should I be lucky enough to sell some pieces, we’ll be able to skip the middle man” meaning original art for the purchasers and more of the money direct to Ellie to help finance the venture. Ellie’s described her three styles “My naked ladies and flowers are pretty self explanatory, I use an abstract technique which involves pouring and dribbling paint onto canvas before dragging and distorting to get the desired effect. Boilers, boxes & homes. 25 Years at Connelly Court, Brampton.

rampton has a rich social and industrial heritage and during a visit to Connelly Court and Chester House on Chester Street, I was treated to a glimpse into both. It was 25 years ago this month that the East Midlands Housing Homes (emh Homes) moved the first tenant into the complex which continues to provide housing to people with disabilities or those over the age of 55.

The two water towers were added at this point, providing the water should it be needed to supply the fire sprinkler system - essential in a building manufacturing paper and card products. The site remained with Robinsons for over 100 years before the works moved to Wheatbridge in 1982.

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve always known the building was there, often wondering what it was, who lived there and why there were strange water towers so high up. I got the chance to learn more about the building and, as always with Brampton, discovered it played a vital role in the growth of Chesterfield as an industrial centre.

The next few years saw the site go unused, with the original Arnolds Boiler Works being damaged by fire in 1984. It was a further four years before emh Homes acquired the site and set about an ambitious plan to demolish and rebuild parts of the site. The construction was not without its problems; work commenced on 2nd June 1986 but on the 17th June Block B, now Chester House, was severely affected by a fire. This caused major disruption to the building programme in terms of time and cost.

Originally the site of Arnolds Boiler Works, and a landmark building, the first building in Europe to feature a roof using a single central column from which the roof joists spanned, not unlike a huge umbrella. This was in the oldest section of the building but was destroyed by fire many years ago. Following Arnoldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ownership the works were purchased by Robinsons in 1883 where they underwent significant rebuilding and

Today the site consists of two blocks of flats linked by communal gardens and a small row of curved terrace properties, built using bricks reclaimed from the demolition works. There are now 36 properties at Connelly Court and

24 at Chester House, providing independent living with support available in Connelly Court if needed, provided by Julie Goodwin and the team, and Steve Foster, the Caretaker, who has been employed on site since emh Homes opened the site. I was invited to take a look around the flats by Glenn Wilbourne at no 12 and Mick White at no 3. Both were clearly very happy with their homes and with the service provided by emh Homes, Mick commented “The only way they’ll take me out of here is in a box.” On Monday 16 September the building was opened up to celebrate its Silver anniversary as part of Brampton’s community and I was invited along on the day which kicked off with emh Homes Chief Executive, Chan Kataria, unveiling a copy of the original architects drawings in the communal lounge. Three members of the Robinson family had come along, Richard, John and Guy. Guy remembered touring the factory as a young child with his father and how the first plastic injection moulding took place there for the caps for the Smarties packaging. It made me realise what an important role Brampton played in the manufacturing world... I’ll never look at a pack of Smarties in the same way again! Julie had produced some amazing display boards which decorated the walls of the communal spaces showing significant businesses, locations and events from Brampton’s past, names like The Griffin Foundry, Cannon Mill, Brampton Police Station, Bradbury Hall, Brewery Yard, Coliseum Cinema, Markham Baths to name a few. These display must have taken hours to collate, reminding me again of the fascinating history of the area. I chatted to a few of the residents about their homes, Theresa Macmillan who’s been at Connelly Court for a short time, “I was after a one bed flat and the flat at Connelly Court was ideal, all services included, well maintained and in a great location close to transport, shops and services” she commented, “the complex is like a small community, I have good neighbours and friends.” Theresa had on display a selection of silverware, “I work as a silversmith for my hobby, it’s a wind down from my day job in holistic therapies” she added. Pauline Allen is Brampton born and bred, her father was the landlord of the Bold Rodney, “the pubs been gone a long time now, it used to be where Dynasty now is. I remember my mother telling me tales of the Brampton Feast which used to be held each year in the fields behind the pub.” Pauline has been at Connelly Court for about three years and likes the location and the sense of community. She makes her own tapestries which are on display in the communal lounge, “I also work as volunteer at the Ashgate Hospice shop and feel I’m doing my bit for a good local cause” she adds. I didn’t get the chance to chat with all the residents, some of whom had worked for Robinsons in the building before it was converted to homes. After a while it was time to go and I came away feeling thankful to emh Homes, not for the coffee and cakes, but thanks that they had taken an old derelict industrial shell and created a small friendly community in the old buildings, somewhere that will continue to provide homes for many years to come and emh Homes, rather than demolish the buildings, have preserved an important piece of local history. Scenic Flooring Behind the business Nick and Jane Hill from Scenic Flooring

ick and Jane Hill of Scenic Flooring moved from the town centre to Chatsworth Road two years ago, and haven’t looked back.

“We took the leap of faith into self employment 11 years ago. Nick has been fitting flooring since leaving school whereas my background was in the Social Services rapid response team, attending terminally ill customers who had very specific care needs - a very different role to carpet sales. Nick gave me a brief history of all things flooring and we opened our first shop at 9 South Street next to the Ashgate Hospice shop in town” explained Jane. “I was terrified the first time Nick left me on my own, but it wasn’t long before I’d adjusted to my new role” says Jane, but this short introduction and limited training have paid off. Within three years they’d moved to larger premises

at the bottom of South Street which was to be home for the next seven years, before moving to 276/278 Chatsworth Road, the building previously occupied by Harleys, before they moved a couple of doors up the road. Nick is responsible for the fitting of all orders, part of a small team who are all time-served in the flooring trade. Nick previously worked for various local companies but is really enjoying being self employed, sub contracting to the local stores. “Service is important to me, I take the same approach to a job whether it’s a £3.99/sqm or £99/sqm product, the end result being just as important”, comments Nick. Why move from town to Chatsworth Road? “At the start of the recession there was a notable difference in foot fall in town, we looked at options, Chatsworth Road was developing, new

businesses moving in and there was a real buzz about the place.” explains Jane. “We were lucky to find a location just where we wanted and larger than the space in town. We now have a large showroom plus we have three rooms upstairs that will eventually become additional showroom space.” Was the move worth it I ask. “Absolutely, business has been good, which is why we haven’t yet completed the upstairs rooms, we’ve simply not had time to focus on them yet. The nice thing about moving was that there was no real loss of any old customers, they found us and came down to the new location” says Jane. “We’re now in the run up to Christmas it’s now that things step up a gear as people get rooms and projects complete ready for the festive season and visiting family.” Our showroom in town displayed a lot of hard flooring, laminates, real wood, brands like Amtico and Karndean, the Chatsworth Road showroom still contains these products but we’ve also got a good stock of carpets. “We are keen to source British brands where we can” adds Jane, “we find that people genuinely steer towards the British products if they are available, many of our customers want to support UK brands and businesses” says Jane.

What’s new in the world at Scenic? “The use of Amtico and Karndean is growing, a warmer alternative to ceramic tiles. People are tending to move back to carpets for lounges and bedrooms, places where warmth is needed, hard floors remaining in high traffic areas. “Karndean has introduced a loose lay system, every third tile is loose glued. This produces a floor that can be removed if needed, eg: in bathroom areas where access may be required under the floor. “Amtico has a new signature range, you choose your design and colour way for your room. “We are also Sisal fitters - a natural product that needs time to cure before it can be cut into, this is a two day installation process that we can provide. “We have also recently acquired a new subcontractor who can provide under floor heating, allowing us to provide a complete service after finding many customers are looking for a single supplier who can provide the sub floor and finish product.”

Nick commented “I think one of the reasons we are seeing such success is that people are taking the message to support local really seriously, and showing their support to the smaller independent business rather than large retailers or national chains. Moving to Chatsworth Road has been the best thing we could have done and I’d like to pass on our thanks to all those customers who’ve supported us since moving from town.” It’s great to hear a business recognising the positive effect of locating to Chatsworth Road. Thanks to the efforts of our local community, local businesses continue to receive a greater proportion of our expenditure. Let’s keep up the momentum, it sounds to me as though it’s making a difference.

New Clubhouse. New Season: New Logo. Catching up with progress at the Chesterfield Panthers RUFC

hesterfield Panthers Rugby Club have been resident at their new ground since February this year, as featured in our Winter 2013 edition. In August another major milestone was reached with the opening of the new club house. It’s not been officially opened but is being enjoyed by the club’s members already!

2013/14 will be the first full season for Chesterfield Panthers at the club, the site has been a £2M investment consisting of three rugby pitches, two football pitches, a cricket pitch and multiuse games area, all of which are available for hire.

It’s not only the ground and facilities that are new, the team have a new contemporary logo which still uses the Spire and a Panther to nod its head to the logo of old.

The two football pitches are already fully booked by Synergy Sports Academy who are aiming to make this their long term home in partnership with the Panthers. The rugby pitches are now in full use and the season got off to a terrific start, the Chesterfield Panthers’ first team winning against Leesbrook 90/0! “It was a fantastic first Page 46 • www.s40local.co.uk

No more changing in the Portakabin. “The ladies team are taking a while to find their feet. Not surprising given the number of new members, they feel they are settling in though and after a mixed start are optimistic about the

future. Ladies rugby is taking off, there is room for new players, so if anyone is interested they should give us a call” says Anna.

The club has a very focused management team of volunteers working on the club’s success and how they can contribute. The move from Stonegravels to Dunston in the fantastic new facility is an incredible achievement for the team.

The money raised by sponsoring the club is fed directly into the club, the options for sponsorship include the purchase of logo’d kit, post protectors, corner flags, equipment, all things that are used by players and are of immediate benefit. You can sponsor the Chesterfield Panthers from £300 upwards and with 400 members and over 1,000 people per week passing through the complex it has to be good targeted exposure.

The Chesterfield Panthers have teams for all ages and abilities. The Panther Cubs cater for ages from two to six, while seven to 17 year olds play in the youth teams and seniors start at 18, and of course the ladies teams. As well as getting involved by playing or taking the kids down to watch, there are some great opportunities for local businesses to get involved via sponsorship. A number of local businesses have already got involved. Peter Boardman from Somersall Financial Management explained why he thought it was important, “I became involved at Chesterfield Panthers through my 6 year old son who has been enjoying playing Tag Rugby with the Panthers Minis on Sunday mornings. As well as seeing him thoroughly enjoy himself I have been very impressed with the ethos and disciplines learned by the young boys and girls. Playing this sport at such a young age will, in my view, give them excellent grounding for playing other sports and in their daily lives. When I saw the plans for the new clubhouse alongside the fantastic new pitches at Dunston I couldn’t resist getting involved at the beginning of this new era for Chesterfield Panthers. I’m looking forward to watching the club develop both on and off the field of

England and Lions centre Manu Tuilagi (remember David Cameron’s bunny ears?) and England under-20s international Ryan Bower have been confirmed as visitors at the rugby camp, providing rugby coaching for youngsters aged nine to 14 years old. Rob Smith from Leicester Tigers said: “This will be the first Tigers’ rugby camp at Chesterfield Panthers RUFC. The facilities at the ground are second-to-none, so the youngsters will have a great experience. We are very much looking forward to being more involved with the club and helping develop grass roots rugby in the local area.”

The Tiger’s training camps have proved hugely popular with over 1400 young people enrolled over the summer. During the week-long course players will receive up to five hours of coaching a day from some of the Tigers’ top senior coaches who will be assisted by past and present players. utumn has taken hold, leaves are falling, conkers lie on the ground... destined never to be attached to shoe laces as they’re not as interesting as iPads and health and safety won’t allow them at school... and we think about hanging up the gardening gloves... but not quite just yet as Colin Harrison from Transition Chesterfield gives us the penultimate garden

Outside containers should be insulated before it gets consistently cold, by wrapping in bubble-wrap. Do this when it’s mild and not frosty, otherwise you’ll just seal in the frost…

You can still divide perennials (and rhubarb), as long as it stays mild and there’s no frost forecast for at least a few days – never do it if the ground is frozen.

Most perennials should now be cut down to ground level, although you can leave those with attractive seeds-heads if they’ve not been made tatty by the wind – grasses can be particularly effective for a few more weeks, and seed-heads can attract birds.

Keep lawns clear of fallen leaves, and rake out worm-casts. Grass growth will have slowed almost to a halt, although you might need to give the lawn an occasional light trim, especially if there are long mild spells. Clean the mower and, if needed, get it serviced in winter rather than when you might need it in spring.

Sow over-wintering vegetables – cabbages, broad beans and peas are just some that will grow much faster in spring if they’ve had the chance to develop roots beforehand.

If you have any brassicas (cabbages, sprouts etc.) pigeons can find them very appealing, so protect them with some netting or fleece. Apart from parsnips and swedes, all root vegetables should be lifted, although leeks usually withstand frost quite well.

Continue to check any bare soil for germinating weeds and deal with them; it's normally easier to get out all of a dandelion root out if the soil is wet. Digging over vegetable patches can be quite pleasant if the weather is good, with the possible added bonus of a robin watching to see if you turn up any worms. But try to avoid walking on wet soil, as this will compact it, then you'll need to dig it again.

If you have bird-feeders, keep them topped up (and provide fresh water as well); encouraging foraging birds, especially tits, will help deal with over-wintering pests and their eggs, as well as being great fun to watch.

Mostly the colder months are about planning for next year, looking at catalogues and ordering seeds. No-one can predict what the weather will be like next week, let along next year, so you'll have to assume it will be a normal summer – if only we knew what that was any more...

A retired school-teacher from Newbold is in training for a sponsored marathon length swim to help Chesterfield based charity Kids ‘N’ Cancer UK in its vital support of young people with cancer. Rotarian David Windle, and a past president of the Rotary Club of Chesterfield, was so moved by a recent talk given by charity founder, Rotarian Mike Hyman that he felt compelled to help the charity in their efforts to support children and their families who have a variety of problems associated with cancer. He is to swim a sponsored marathon length 26 miles 385 yards over the week 21-25 October 2013 at Ringwood Hall Hotel Health & Fitness Centre. Kids ‘N’ Cancer UK is also currently organising the very first Chesterfield & Derbyshire Marathon in June 2014, so David has chosen to do his fund-raising now by swimming a similar length instead of running. David Windle said:- “I am stronger at swimming than running so decided to raise funds for the charity with a sponsored swim rather than a sponsored run.” Charity founder Mike Hyman explained: “Kids ’N' Cancer UK is a charity designed to help children in the UK receive life-saving Proton Therapy treatment for their cancers and tumours. Isla’s show, which brings together live performance and film about the effect of music in wartime, is timed to fit in with the run-up to Remembrance Sunday. The singer-song writer will perform a selection of classic songs and tell the story behind them. Film-maker Patrick King will join Isla to give a fascinating and humorous behind the scenes look at the making of award winning documentary films. Bess Heath trains at Englands Development Programme

Twelve year old Wicket Keeper Bess Heath from Holymoorside has recently been selected to join the England U15s Women's Development Programme at Loughborough University, one of the youngest players to do so and the only girl representing Derbyshire. Selection was based on those who demonstrated potential to develop through the England Development Pathway to represent their Country. The Programme is aimed at introducing, educating and challenging players to what it takes to be the worlds best and is delivered by high quality coaches, sport science and medicine specialists. Bess plays for the Chesterfield Girls Barbarians team at Walton and also for Baslow Juniors and the Adults 2nd team. She has been a Derbyshire County Squad member for two years recently receiving the Land Rover Discovery Award at the County Presentations. Bess Heath is pictured below with the Derbyshire Cricket Captains.

Brampton Brewery FC

It's been a while since we caught up with the Brampton Brewery Football Club, and since we last heard their news they've been competing at St. George's Park, Burton, home of the new National Football Centre. Set in the National Forest, in 330 acres of beautifully landscaped parkland, the centre is the training base for the 24 England teams and also the home of FA Learning, The FA’s educational department. BBFC won this opportunity earlier in the summer when their five a side team won the StreetGames Football Pools Regional Tournament at Tupton School. Their prize was an all expenses paid overnight stay in the Hilton Hotel at St. George's Park, plus the chance to represent the East Midlands in the National Finals. The game itself started badly when only two minutes into their first game, striker Liam Roberts was injured and took no further part in the competition. Roberts spent the rest of the day on crutches, to find on his return that he would be out of football for about 6 weeks. The lads won a few games but not enough to reach the final, which was eventually won by Deepdale La Coruna, representing the North West. Unfortunately, Roberts was not the only casualty of the summer - several teams from the Chesterfield Sunday League had folded due to either lack of funds or lack of players, reducing the previous 8 Divisions, down to only 7. BBFC playing their football in Division 5 following their promotion at the end of last season.

In the first game of the season they suffered a 3-0 defeat away to Clowne Wanderers. Their second game, a midweek evening fixture presented new problems with players away on holiday or unable to play due to work commitments. This, together with Liam Robert's injury and a broken collar bone for player Dom Verissimo led to an emergency signing for BBFC in the form of Ryan Hardman. Ryan cementing his debut performance with a hat trick to give the 5-2 victory over Brimington United. So far this season, BBFC have played six league games and are sixth in the league having won two, drawn two and lost two. In-form striker Hardman has netted 14 goals, including another hat trick against Oxcroft United in the first round of the Derbyshire Junior Cup. In the next round, BBFC meet FC Chadd from the Derby City League. We'll keep you up to date with progress in the next issue.

Furthermore, upon assembling themselves on your front door step, they knock on your door or ring your doorbell just at the point you are sitting down for your tea, putting your kids to bed or getting into the shower.

But if I am completely honest, I don’t get upset if there are no callers because I am quite content ploughing my way through a couple of kilos of swizzlesticks, jelly babies and chupa-chups; even if my dentist isn’t.

And if that wasn’t annoying enough, they then present you with a choice of ‘give-us-somethingor-we’ll-do-something-unpleasant-to-you-oryour-house-or-your-car’… albeit disguised in a cryptic message of “trick or treat?”. Mind you, I have to give them some credit; some of them do go to the extent of disguising themselves with masks associated with characters from horror films… which is nice if not rather unsettling. Coincidentally, this also decreases the chances of identifying any of the perpetrators when you realise your wing mirrors are missing the following morning because you told them to get stuffed.

Unfortunately we all know what happens after Halloween has occupied our supermarket shelves… Christmas begins rolling out! Pumpkins, pitchforks and witches hats are moved aside to make way for Quality Street, mulled wine and singing snowmen (or is it snowpeople?).

It’s not even as though you can fob the prepubescent oversized hobbits off with some Haribo’s or Milky Way’s either; these boys are only in it for the cash. I can only compare the experience of it to a formal, face-to-face mugging where you kind of have a choice. You open your door, they threaten you (albeit politely-ish), you give them cash, they go away; oh and happy Halloween! Admittedly I do sound a bit miserable and I am sure that there are groups of teenage lads trick or treating who genuinely want to boost their confectionary collection. I happily tolerate those trick or treaters who are young enough that they need to be accompanied by a responsible adult for supervision and safety’s sake (although I do believe that any

And there’s bonfire night too! Not forgetting that less than a week after door to door requests for confectionery and cash are over, the good people of Great Britain begin lighting fires in their back gardens and public parks. And not before arming themselves with incendiary devices which are freely launched into the air above their friends and families into trees and power lines. Isn’t it a pity that Halloween and Christmas couldn’t be celebrated on November the 5th? Not only would it all be over in one fell swoop but you’d have plenty of stuff to burn as well. Reading this back, I wonder if all this scepticism and negativity is an age thing. I wonder if I have finally turned into a miserable old git. Probably!
