Intro Hello, Happy New Year and welcome to our Winter edition of S40 Local. Have you noticed the new logo? Over the Winter break we’ve been working on updating the design, layout and fonts. We think it makes it clearer, easier to read and a bit smarter, but I’d be interested in your thoughts too. Until it comes back from print I’m never 100% sure what it will be like so fingers crossed it all looks OK. Thanks to Hannah Wheeler for the work she’s put in. If you’re one of S40 Local’s 200+ Facebook followers you may have seen the plea for someone to help with tidying up the community Christmas tree at Walton Dam. Thank you so much to the people who shared the post, and more importantly to the community spirited people who have stepped forward to help keep this tradition alive! Still on the Christmas tree theme, we joined in with the St Thomas’ Christmas Tree festival this year with our very own tree and offered you the opportunity to hang your feedback, thoughts and ideas on the tree. Thank you everyone for your comments, I’ve included them on page 14, and many thanks to Gemma for reminding me to ask you for your input into the magazine, it’s always really welcome. If you have articles you’d like to submit, news or photos to share I’d love to hear it and share it - and it really is what makes the magazine community focused - so I definitely encourage you to get in touch and send things in. If you’d like to contribute on a regular basis either in response to a brief or with articles of your choosing - whether as a hobby, for experience or on a freelance basis, again please get in touch. Next edition will be with you by 2 March 2014. Enjoy! Paul.

“Not only did we love David’s design ideas but he was able to provide handleless gloss doors with solid granite work surfaces topped off with full glass splashbacks. The Amtico floor was so stunningly practical we chose to use it on not only the kitchen, but also the dinning room, hallway, utility and washroom. Thanks again David.”

The Janksters
Words by Paul Chapman Photos Cid & Mo - Cover Images Courtesy Adlard Print Nottingham If you’re a reader, you’ll know the pleasure of losing yourself in a good book, and appreciate Jane Austen’s sentiment when she stated “a book is too short if it’s well written” with a sense of disappointment when you finish a book, even when the ending is fantastic! But, how do you become a book lover, rather than a reluctant reader and how can we nurture that same love of books in the next generation? Local authors and book champions Cid and Mo are on a quest to capture the interest of young readers, particularly boys through their workshops for schools, clubs and societies with their Janksters books, which bridge the reading gap for six to ten year old boys. Cid explains “Both Mo and I have always written, and working in education have developed a passion for sparking interest and pleasure in books with reluctant readers, often boys at Key Stage Two.” Mo, a Head teacher before she left to set up her own chocolate shop, was constantly
Page 18 www.s40local.co.uk
researching to try and understand why people don’t read for pleasure and why so many get ‘turned off’ books at a young age. “For boys, there’s a gap between the picture books and the short paperback novels, apart from comics there’s very little for them to choose and enjoy” says Mo. Cid and Mo’s Janksters series aims to bridge that gap, and if the way our seven year old son consumed both books is anything to go by, they’ve hit the nail on the head. Young readers are taught using key stages; key stage one establishes a set of building blocks which works nicely for boys and girls alike, but with the introduction of sentences at key stage two boys often start to lose interest in reading. “We want to develop independent readers” outlines Cid, “kids who want to read for pleasure, not just associate reading with the rewards sometimes favoured by schools “ “Children need to be able to read a story end to end with no reward other than that of indulging themselves in the fantasy world it
creates” says Cid. I think I know what she means having read the Hobbit as a youngster I established my picture of a Hobbit from the description, no drawing, illustration, green screen, CGI or tablet generated graphic, it was in my mind. But for many boys reading isn’t cool - and Cid and Mo are working to change this perception through reading workshops which they take into schools, it’s about reading being intrinsic. “The important thing is for youngsters to read a book, enjoy it and want to pick up another one” enthuses Mo, “associating reading with pleasure and not work, being inspired by the words on the page. It creates the opportunity to open their eyes to new things, new ideas, new adventures and the world out there... Where will they go today?” And with this pleasure comes a whole host of other benefits “It also makes a massive difference to a child’s development”. Cid and Mo are clearly very enthusiastic about what they do “reading improves grammar,
knowledge, opportunity, history, facts, science, moral understanding, escapism, imagination, cultural awareness... the list goes on”. “We were recently running training sessions for a group of foster carers” explains Mo. “reading to a group of eight to ten year olds we noticed a little girl of just two playing on her own. When we were reading aloud she stopped what she was doing and turned, giving her full attention to what we were doing. She was hooked on the sound of rhythm of the words, this association with words starts when a baby is still inside Mum comforted by the sounds of her voice.” Cid and Mo absolutely recognise the difficulty we all face in finding the time to sit down and read with our children, but in their research and experience, the importance of doing so can’t be ignored - reading aloud to our kids is one of the best investments in time we can make. The pair have recently been appointed as patrons of reading at Concord Junior School

in Sheffield, the school’s special, designated children’s author with whom the school forms a personal attachment. These patrons may be authors of fictin or non-fiction, poets, storytellers or illustrators. The official launch of the Patron of Reading scheme took place in the school library in November. They gave the children the first opportunity to buy their new book – The Janksters and the Ants in Pants – before its official release. Children and parents queued from 8am to be the first to get their hands on a book! Children wrote stories and poems for a competition, dressed up as book characters and the highlight of the morning was a special guest visitor…Diego De Girolamo, striker for Sheffield United! “Diego kindly agreed to visit and sign books as part of the Patron of Reading Launch and the children were very excited to meet him. It’s part of the Premiership Stars reading scheme which has been really successful and recognises the ‘cool’ value of football players being associated with reading and encouraging children to read.” “We spent the rest of the morning visiting classes, reading extracts from our book, presenting prizes and singing ‘Janksters’ songs! Brilliant!” “We hope that our ongoing involvement with Concord Junior School will help to encourage reading for pleasure and writing for fun. The children are so enthusiastic and keen to learn – it is an absolute pleasure to visit” says Cid. If your school, club or society would like to arrange a visit from Cid and Mo to inspire young readers you can contact them via their website (below). To get hold of their Janksters books - Janksters and the Ants in Pants and Janksters and the Talking Slug you can do so directly from www. cidandmo.co.uk or via amazon. Why invest in Chesterfield? Words and Pictures by Paul Chapman A select group of national and international business leaders, developers, property investors, media, trade and industry, together with direction setters from Chesterfield Council and Destination Chesterfield, gathered at Portcullis House on the banks of the River Thames adjacent to the Houses of Parliament recently. They were invited by Toby Perkins, MP for Chesterfield, to celebrate the launch of the ‘Invest In Chesterfield’ campaign. The invitees were treated to the first glimpse of the campaign, which aims to highlight the opportunities for investment in Chesterfield, to promote the town, pitch schemes and ideas and to encourage people to invest or base their businesses here, rather than elsewhere. It’s a competitive and difficult market. There are lots of towns and schemes across the UK and abroad looking for investment, so we’ve got to do a good job and get the right message to the right people. The campaign is supported by the ‘Invest In Chesterfield’ video.
See it for yourself at chesterfield.co.uk/invest. To give a national perspective and support the message, Shadow Business Secretary Chuka Umunna MP, attended the event. He recognised the importance of ‘Invest in Chesterfield’ and the progress it’s making, saying: “It echoes what should be happening across the country. It’s a town that’s taking an active interest and responsibility for moving itself forward. A good example of the public and private sector working together and taking responsibility to attract investment and promote their town”. Toby Perkins enthused: “tremendous opportunities exist for our town. It’s a great place to visit, live and work. I am particularly proud that the Small Business Bus visited Chesterfield in December; the only small town that it pulled into. It was a great example of the importance and pull that our small town, on the edge of the Peak District, can create.” Toby was keen to acknowledge the importance of the Chesterfield Champions project, small and large businesses alike taking a role in shaping our town. All this positivity is great and Huw Bowen, Chief Executive of Chesterfield Borough Council, who also attended the event, confirmed how this translates into specific results: “We’ve seen 96% occupancy of our town centre retail units and an 11% uplift in tourism in the last 12 months. Our iconic buildings, the Crooked Spire, the Markets, Shambles and refurbished Market Hall are also all helping to bring people into town to shop.” Huw knows not everything is good and there’s more we need to do to improve. “Although we have 12,000 students at Chesterfield College we still have areas in the Borough that are in the top 10 areas for deprivation and see youth unemployment at 23%, so we need to invest and create new opportunities for people,” he added. Neil Cordon from AVANTI GAS reiterated the pull of Chesterfield, “We were previously looking to relocate to Nottingham, but we are staying in Chesterfield due to the quality of available resources and a great place to work, rest and play.”
Page 24 www.s40local.co.uk
Crush, a design agency located on Marsden Street, Chesterfield, also attended the event. Four years ago, directors Jonathan Worsley and Natalie Brammer took the decision to move their business from Nottingham to Chesterfield. Since then, business has increased fourfold and they now head up a team of seven people at their offices.
“Cost-effective, well-connected and full of potential - Chesterfield is the perfect location for your business” Peter Swallow - Chair of Destination Chesterfield.
“We got off to a great start,” explains Jonathan, “Chesterfield gave us some breathing space away from an overly competitive city. The environment we are in is perfect; we have been able to concentrate on our existing clients and focus on delivering great work without the distraction of being part of a saturated sector. “As well as a good space, we’ve found that the support from local businesses and community far exceeded our expectations. I put this down to Chesterfield people having too much modesty. There are loads of local people doing an amazing job, running hugely successful national and international businesses. But they don’t shout about it. A lot of our growth can be attributed to discovering these local businesses.” Cost was a key factor, with office space available in Chesterfield for a lot less than the £170 sq ft in London, they were able to set up a great space in which to introduce clients and win national accounts. With an excellent local workforce available, good quality accommodation, central location and fresh air to breathe, Crush have found Chesterfield the best place in which to build their business.

Projects & Results To enable investors to see the possibilities and to ensure a development approach that meets the needs of the town, Chesterfield has a long-term vision with a framework of projects and schemes that create opportunities for investment. Some of these projects are already underway, whilst others are still pitching to potential investors.
Project: The Northern Gateway The Northern Gateway is a £50m development that will bring with it premium
retail and leisure facilities to complement and enhance the town centre. It aims to improve the shopping opportunities so people don’t have to travel to Sheffield, Meadowhall, Nottingham or Derby to shop. Even as an avid supporter of local business and keeping my spend within the town, I still have to travel away from town on occasions to obtain a product or service I’m after simply because it’s not available in Chesterfield or from the various stores and retail areas that now circle our town centre. It is hoped the Northern Gateway
scheme will plug the leak and divert spend back into Chesterfield. The quote below remains at the core of the discussions today and the long-term expectation of the scheme is unchanged. The scheme has backing from Wilson Bowden Developments and Barratt Homes and negotiations are currently underway to secure anchor tenants for the major retail and supermarket elements. Once interest is secured this will see the scheme commencing, although no timescales are currently available.
“The plans will help secure an expected increase in spending of £40million PA, a day and night extension integrated with our present town with the potential to create 1000 new jobs. We are looking to attract the high end retailers, no more charity shops, and want to keep spend in Chesterfield, restricting the flow of people to Sheffield, Derby, Nottingham and Meadowhall. I believe this can be delivered and is a realistic plan for our town.” Quote from S40 Local July 2012 by Councillor John Burrows.

Article Project: Chesterfield Waterside If you drive away from town, down Brimington Road, on the left you’ll find a canal basin set behind fencing, complete with boarding showing the final shape of the Waterside development. This scheme was first discussed in 2004 in proposals made by the Chesterfield Canal Partnership and the 60 acre development is being led by Chesterfield-based company, Bolsterstone Group, working in partnership with Arnold Laver Group and Chesterfield Borough Council. The site
runs from the former Trebor Bassett site near the train station down to the former Arnold Laver site alongside the A61 and forms part of the A61 Corridor Regeneration area, which has already delivered the independent four-star Casa Hotel, Tesco and the Proact stadium. The 10 year £340 million Chesterfield Waterside development will be an exciting example of regeneration at its best, taking a largely vacant edge of the town and creating a vibrant new environment of
residential and commercial buildings and open spaces. This will be home to a thriving new community of businesses and residents and will become a major attraction for visitors. The development will be characterised by bold and excellent design and a sustainable approach to delivery. With funding secured, the basin has been constructed and in early 2014 the diggers are set to roll on site and begin the first residential phase of Chesterfield Waterside.
Result: Markham Vale At the Invest in Chesterfield launch, Ben Ward from Henry Boot Developments talked us through the joint venture partnership which is redeveloping 200 acres of development land to the North East of town, located on the mostly derelict Markham Colliery Site. “Junction 29a has recently opened in the heart of the scheme and future plans include a rail terminal which makes this location an attractive proposition to businesses needing quick and easy access to the UK’s road and rail network.
Page 28 www.s40local.co.uk
There’s been a strong level of interest in Markham Vale and a number of schemes have been completed on the site including a flagship Environment Centre, the speculatively built Waterloo Court, which is currently fully occupied and a number of bespoke buildings for companies such as Industrial Ancillaries Ltd, Squadron Medical, MSE Hiller Ltd and Andrew Page Automotive have taken a 100,000 sq ft facility which was constructed in just 20 weeks and has made good use of the local labour force that is readily available for such an operation”.
“In addition, in October 2013 Ready Egg products selected Markham Vale to locate its new 35,000 sq ft manufacturing facility which, costing £8M, will generate approximately 50 new jobs. McDonald’s created 90 jobs in its new restaurant and there are plans for a filling station and other food outlets which is hoped will be up and running soon. Great news for the area, when you consider that together these schemes will have generated in excess of 400 new jobs.”

Behind The Business
Peak Edge Hotel at the Red Lion
One of the UK’s tenth best small hotels and it’s on your doorstep! Words by Paul Chapman Pictures by Peak Edge Hotel
The family owned, Peak Edge Hotel opened its doors to the 27 luxurious rooms and suites in April 2011 and continues to be busy with visitors using the base to explore Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall, Bakewell, Chesterfield, Matlock and all the area has to offer. The new bedrooms, conference and meeting rooms and facilities have made the Peak Edge Hotel an ideal location for an event, 89 weddings will have taken place at the hotel during 2013 and there are already over 100 booked for 2014. Add to this the major annual events the hotel hosts during the year such as the Seafood Festival in October, the Game Festival in November, the Summer Food and Drink Fayre and the Christmas Market all
Page 32 www.s40local.co.uk
mean the staff at this AA 4 star hotel are kept busy. The adjacent original building, the Red Lion Bar and Bistro has been a pub since 1788, but before that, was a children’s workhouse called the ‘The Woodcutter’, where the children lived after spending the day cutting wood for the lead smelting chimney just behind the building on Stone Edge. These basic conditions a far cry from the luxury accommodation offered today. Take a look at Trip Advisor (an independent review site for hotels across the world) and you’ll find the Peak Edge Hotel rated one of the top ten small hotels in the UK according to
the reviewers. 300 reviews giving a 97% rating on Trip Advisor. It has been under the ownership of Damian Dugdale and his wife Jo since 2001, the original intention being to sell it on as a development opportunity, but 13 years on Damian and Jo are still there having implemented some dramatic changes. “When we bought the pub it was part of the Tom Cobley chain, it was always busy with 400 people typically turning up for lunch on Sunday, to what was one of the area’s first carveries, but the place looked tired and needed a new lease of life.” Damian took on the running of the pub in 2006 and after 12 months shut the doors for a full refit that took three months to complete. “Basically we stripped it back to the bare bones, we sold everything at a local auction run by Fidler Taylor, which attracted a lot of attention, people were really curious about what we were doing”. The contemporary Red Lion bar and restaurant reopened in April 2007, “All our food is sourced locally from the ‘garden of Derbyshire’ and we even produce food on site for the restaurant from our smallholding which provides free range eggs, we have a polytunnel to grow herbs and lettuces and grow tomatoes, apples, gooseberries and rhubarb.” “Originally we had a focus on seafood, I’m originally from Lytham St Anne’s and love seafood, I recall many days spent raking up cockles in the bay, so I encourage a good selection of seafood” adds Damian. “We’d always had an idea about how we could make best use of the pub’s location, right on the edge of the beautiful Peak District, as one of the country’s largest outdoor playgrounds we
wanted to build a hotel next door to the pub. We started developing plans to build the hotel in 2008, when people were struggling to find funding and borrowing, but managed to secure £500k funding from the European Leadership to help with the build”. “People who live close by may think they’re unlikely to stay at the hotel, but it’s a perfect location for a weekend getaway, walks in the Peak, evening meals, a comfortable quiet night’s sleep and a great breakfast - without a long drive to get there!! What more could you want?” laughs Damian. Damian Dugdale is down to earth and friendly, he’s one of 12 children so grew up surrounded by healthy competition. At 18 he was DJing in London and Manchester, working at the Hacienda in the 80’s. At 24 he decided he needed a ‘real job’ and started work with a business supplying uniforms to hotels etc. In 1993 he started up his own business supplying uniforms and today splits his time 80/20 between this and the Peak Edge Hotel. Interestingly in a time when we are encouraged to keep linked-in, up to date and track our careers in a detailed CV, Damian has never done a CV, proof that it’s not all about the paperwork; entrepreneurial spirit and hard work can be all it needs to be successful in business. Next on the agenda is the development of 21 three bedroom log cabins set in landscaped car free grounds, to provide additional accommodation for the weddings and events hosted there. It’s a five year plan to be delivered by 2019, with 6000 trees creating the secluded setting for the 60 additional bedrooms. Watch this space. Please mention S40 Local Page 33

Delicibo
Chesterfield’s new Italian Delicatessen Words and Picture by Paul Chapman I love Italy; the country, the food, the wine, I love the Italian passion and oh the Ducati Desmo... Vittorio Risorto is from an Italian family who live in and love Chesterfield with this same Italian passion, it’s clear to hear when he speaks. He, and his brother Sev, are partners at Calabria and they have recently opened Delicibo, an Italian deli outside the new Market Hall opposite the Post Office. Delicibo is small but perfectly formed, with the 3 sq metre space packed with wonderful sounding Italian foods - ingredients to recreate the authentic taste of Italy at home. There’s something for everyone at Delicibo; packs of pizza breads (great for lunchboxes), cured meats and wonderful cheeses, olive oils, balsamic vinagars, olives, organic choices, drinks and a whole lot more. “We want people to come, experiment and experience what’s on offer” says Vic, “We’ve some fantastic products and wherever we can we’ll have products for you to try. We want your feedback, so we deliver the things you want to buy regularly”. True to his word, Vic sent me away with samples to try; Tarallini, made close to the birthplace of his father, Benito, offers four
Page 36 www.s40local.co.uk
interesting flavours. A tasty snack not unlike a posh breadstick, the pizza variety we tried has a mildly spicy flavour which gets gradually warmer the more you sample! Brasilena, a pleasing espresso coffee soda drink, to be drunk cold over ice, not unlike a slightly bitter cola - definitely worth trying. And finally authentic Nduja, a product that is proving popular across the world and being picked up by many chefs. Nduja (pronounced ‘n-du-ya’) has been hailed as the “greatest Italian food discovery since Mozzarella. It’s a chilli-spiced, spreadable pork sausage available in a jar or a natural skin - the unique taste makes it suitable for a variety of dishes. Vic added “We’ve been using it at the restaurant for the last four years, so we’re really excited to be be able to make this available for people through the deli. You can add it to a whole host of dishes, from a pasta sauce, coated on fish or simply warmed up as a dip - every fridge should have a jar in it”. So far we’ve enjoyed ours in a homemade passata sauce with fresh pasta and today... a teaspoon in my baked beans! Simple and wonderful. Don’t forget to mention S40 if you pop in!

1st Class Kitchens Come to Walton shops Words and pictures by Paul Chapman
Dave and Helen Oxley’s family business, 1st Class Kitchens, has been a core part of S40 Local for a number of years now and has been installing kitchens and bedrooms locally for over 15 years. For the last ten years their only showroom has been on Derby Road, but from 4th January 2014 you need go no further than Walton Shops on Moorland View Road, where they’ve opened their second showroom. “A showroom makes it easier for people to visualise the products on offer and gives people ideas” explains Dave, “before we opened the showroom on Derby Road we’d been running the business from home without a shop front for about five years, but having a showroom really makes a difference for people, and we’re really excited to be opening our second showroom just round the corner from where we live and in the heart of S40.” Helen and Dave are looking forward to the year ahead, last year was busy for them and as things are right now there is no reason to think 2014 will be any different. The new showroom is fitted out with modern and contemporary designs, although 1st Class Kitchens can provide styles to suit all tastes. Taking pride of place in the new showroom is an all British, a gloss acrylic design that is completely handle free. “People have a perception that British products are expensive but the ranges on offer will have something
to slot into any budget. Supporting British design and build is something we’re keen to do whenever we can” adds Dave. 1st Class Kitchens are agents for a number of quality branded appliances; Bosch, NEFF and Siemens for instance are available to accompany the kitchen ranges, and again prices range from basic to top end products such as the new Siemens ovens that will automatically cook a joint of meat to perfection. In addition 1st Class Kitchens are also stocking Life Tile©, a new range of luxury vinyl tiles offering a great range with simple installation and a warm feel underfoot compared to ceramic flooring, these products are supported by a 20 year domestic wear warranty or a 12 year commercial wear warranty. With many people considering changes to their homes in the new year, 1st Class Kitchens could have just what you’re looking for so why not call in and visit Helen or Dave at Walton Shops, 139 Moorland View Road to check out the new ranges for yourself. The new showroom is open from 10am to 6pm Thursdays and Fridays and 10am to 4pm on Saturdays, call 01246 224114. Conserving Chatsworth Road Words by Paul Chapman Pictures CBC
Chatsworth Road is currently being proposed as the twelfth conservation area in Chesterfield, others include Chesterfield Town Centre, Somersall Lane, Brimington Centre, Staveley and Old Whittington. Conservation areas vary in size, character and form but aim to recognise areas with special buildings, features, architecture and historical interest - linking us to our past. Chatsworth Road’s character is marked by a mixture of mainly Victorian and Edwardian housing, with more recent buildings nestled between, together with a number of commercial properties, community buildings, churches, some heavy industry and a small number of listed buildings. As a major arterial route, it’s the only impression many people ever get of Chesterfield as they drive to and from the Peak District or across from the M1 to Manchester to the east and this is another
Page 44 www.s40local.co.uk
reasons this area’s importance is recognised, as an opportunity for people to see Chesterfield in a positive light. Chatsworth Road’s attractive buildings, interesting features and design, together with its important position make the area something the council officers feel is worth protecting. From the terrace housing, commercial properties and Victorian housing with attractive bay windows and interesting detail picked out on and around the front elevation - the road offers an attractive collection of period buildings. Chesterfield Borough Council wrote to the 532 affected businesses, households and residents in the proposed area, that stretches from the Zion Church to Storrs Road, inviting feedback and comments before the end of the consultation in December but are still keen to hear people’s views - you can contact them on 01246 345957 or at Jacob.amuli@chesterfield. gov.uk
What will it mean for property owners and occupiers? Conservation areas impact property owners in various ways and additional consideration will need to be applied to future changes, taking account of their contribution to the character and appearance that make the area special. That doesn’t mean all changes will be stopped, just ensures the future look and feel of the area is safeguarded. Future grants may be available to enable change to be made in a sympathetic way. Other elements that make up the street scene, such as trees, street furniture etc. will also be considered and protected. New developments would be required to reflect the character and appearance of the area and sit comfortably with surrounding buildings, so if the general design of properties is red brick with slate roofs then a rendered building with a tiled roof may well not meet planning approval.
Paul Staniforth, Development Management and Conservation Manager commented that “for people who own a property within the boundary of the Conservation Area... in other areas adoption of a conservation area has seen a gentle increase in property prices”. At this time it is just a proposal, but recommendations are being made by Council officers to Cabinet at a council meeting during February where the proposal will be considered. If you want to check out the fine detail of the proposal it can be found online at www. chesterfield.gov.uk or by writing to Chesterfield Borough Council at Town Hall, Rose Hill, Chesterfield or by e mailing Jacob.amuli@ chesterfield.gov.uk Hopefully I’ll be able to bring you more on this once cabinet has met.

The Tramway Tavern Chesterfield CAMRA Pub of the Year Words by Paul Chapman Pictures by Dan Lingard
With six local pubs in the running for the award this year, and two Brampton Brewery pubs in the mix, it was great to see the Chatsworth Road pub scoop the honour of CAMRA pub of the year. The Tramway and Rose and Crown (Brampton) were pitched against The Arkwright Arms (Duckmanton), The Chesterfield Arms (Newbold Road), the White Swan (Town Centre) and the Poets Corner (Ashover) - a pretty impressive list of pubs. The Pub of the Year award recognises great pubs for their atmosphere, decor, customer service, value for money, clientele mix, and most importantly, the quality of the real ale served. Winning means a listing for The Tramway in the national 2015 CAMRA Good Beer Guide, an invaluable resource and real ale tourist map for people who love their ale. As Good Beer Guide editor, Roger Protz explains, “The Good Beer Guide is the most up to date guide to the best real ale pubs in the UK, compiled solely through recommendations and independent judgement. Unlike other guides which charge pubs to feature, the Good Beer Guide lists pubs on their merit alone and doesn’t charge any pub or brewery for entry in the guide”. And it’s not the Tramway’s only recent accolade, they also won the Destination Chesterfield Pub of the Year award, sponsored by In the Works PR, against other finalists Barca Bar at Casa Hotel and The Market. Emma Clarke, who runs the Brampton Brewery, commented “We’re delighted to have won the CAMRA award. It means a lot to us, especially as it’s voted for by CAMRA members, people who are passionate about
Page 48 www.s40local.co.uk
what makes a good pub. It’s great to get recognised for what we do, we work hard at creating a great atmosphere at the Tramway and it’s this coupled with Brampton Brewery’s great real ales and guests beers that people appreciate”. From its beginnings just 5 years ago, the Brampton Brewery estate has grown from the Brewery on Chatsworth Road, to include the Rose and Crown, The Tramway Tavern, The Brunswick Inn (Derby) and the Beer Cellar off-sales. If you’ve never tried a Brampton beer perhaps it’s about time you did and what place to try one than their new CAMRA Pub of the Year.
CAMRA - Campaign for Real Ale is an independent, voluntary organisation campaigning for real ale, community pubs and consumer rights. It was formed in March 1971 by four men from the north-west who were disillusioned by the domination of the UK beer market by a handful of companies pushing products of low flavour and overall poor quality onto the consumer.

Garden Tips
Garden Things Winter Words by Colin Harrison 1. If you have fruit trees or bushes that flower early (apricots, peaches or nectarines) protect the blossom from frosts, which will kill the buds and stop the tree fruiting. Finish pruning fruit trees (except soft fruit). 2. Cut down any grasses that have been left over winter, and start to water any outside pots. 3. Sow early vegetable and salad crops, in a light and frost-free, but not too warm, spot for planting out later. If raising seedlings on a window sill remember that, once germinated, they need to be turned regularly, otherwise they’ll lean alarmingly towards the light. Putting a reflector covered with silver foil on the room side can help prevent this happening. 4. Bare-root trees and shrubs (including roses) can still be planted as long as the ground isn’t frozen. 5. Prune wisteria, and any winterflowering shrubs that have finished flowering. 6. Lily bulbs can be planted in pots, which need to be kept frost-free (although they can be kept in the dark until shoots start to show); sweet peas, which appreciate a long growing season with an early start, can be sown in the same conditions. Dahlias can be started into growth by moving them somewhere light and with moderate warmth, but preferably not that of a centrally-heated room. 7. Check to see if you need to replace any plants that have died over winter,
Page 50 www.s40local.co.uk
but don’t be too keen to remove them yet – some plants won’t show signs of growth until the weather is reliably warmer. 8. If you’ve been feeding the birds, make sure there’s a continuity of supply – natural foods are in increasingly short supply towards the end of winter; water for washing and drinking is also vital, so try to provide that as well. 9. If you want to grow your own garlic, plant it as soon as possible – it needs to be frosted to force the bulb to split into cloves. Don’t use any sold for culinary use, as it might not be suitable for late winter planting and may also carry plant diseases. 10. If you’ve bought seed potatoes, chit (allow stems to develop) them by putting them in a cool but light place, not touching - egg boxes are perfect for this. Ideally, you want three shoots coming from the same end of the tuber, so check where the eyes are and try to arrange so three on the same side are uppermost. Rub off any other shoots that start to grow. This may reach you too late for a last reminder about Transition Chesterfield’s Potato Day, on the 25th January, in The Pavements, when we’ll be selling seed potatoes, plus onions, shallots and garlic (at last years prices) between 10 and 2 (unless you’ve pre-ordered, in which case you can pick up from 9). We always have stock left over which we donate to schools – get in touch at food@ transitionchesterfield.org.uk if your school would like some.

Derwent Herbalists: New to Chatsworth Road Complementary Health Centre, Derwent Herbalists, has recently opened up on Chatsworth Road, opposite GK Ford and tucked behind the main run of shops. Herbalists, Wien Caljouw and John Etherington are graduates of the University of Lincoln and have created their new practice to bring a friendly, family-centred approach to herbal medicine. During their degree Wien and John completed over 500 hours out-patient time. They can offer consultations for health conditions such as blood pressure issues, colds, menstrual, menopausal and other hormonal conditions, insomnias, ear, nose and throat (ENT) and skin conditions. The list is long and all encompassing. Complementary medicine supports other treatments and can help relieve symptoms of any of the above and can also help with more serious and chronic conditions. Often people have suffered health problems for a number of years and herbal medicine offers a new approach. Herbal
medicine is traditional and today is accompanied by medical backup and knowledge, the main way it differs is that it treats the person and not the disorder. Wien and John stock a wide selection of herbs and will blend a prescription for your individual condition and circumstances. “Our diagnostics and treatment plan consider all aspects of the individual” explains Wien, “mental state, diet, nutrition and all other factors are considered. Our advice really is holistic.” To complement their services Wien and John have access to a hypnotherapist, phychologist and counsellor who also operate from their base on Chatsworth Road. Wien and John are members of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists. Contact Derwent Herbalists: derwentherbalists@gmail.com www.derwentherbalists.co.uk Tel: 07787 773583 Or find them on facebook.
Imbolc Open Day 1st February 2014
If you’d like to meet Wien and John, or find out whether or not Herbal Medicine is for you, they’re holding an open day from 11am to 4pm together with talks on traditional medicine in modern times. Imbolc, also called Saint Brighid’s Day, is a Gaelic festival marking the beginning of Spring.
Men Only Evenings 2nd Wednesdays Men are generally less comfortable approaching doctors and therapists, so Derwent Herbalists hold men only drop in sessions on the second Wednesday from 7:30 to 9:00pm to give men the opportunity to discover the benefits of herbal medicines with John.
Saturday Morning Drop In Derwent Herbalists also offer phone assessments and a walk in surgery on Saturday mornings between 9:30am and midday.

WASP NEST BRICK CO
Words by Val Woollven When people go for a walk in the lovely autumn sunshine they often bring back seasonal trophies such as blackberries, conkers, mushrooms or acorn cups. My sister went for a walk near Holymoorside... and came back with a brick. She couldn’t resist it because it was special - it had ‘Waspnest’ imprinted on the side. What a wonderful name for a brickworks! I was intrigued and being new to the area, I set out to find out more using the internet and the library. The staff at the local studies section of Chesterfield Library were very helpful. There is an area of Brampton called Waspnest. I couldn’t find an explanation for this but presumably there were many wasps nests there at some point in history. I found Waspnest Cottages off Old Hall Road on the 1898 large scale map, but no brickworks. The Inkerman Brickworks and Colliery were there, off Ashgate Road. The 1918 map showed the cottages and the Waspnest brickworks. I was told that the brickworks were still there in the 1950s; the site was on the corner of Melrose Crescent and Churston Road. The Inkerman Colliery had gone by 1918 - Ashgate Pottery was on its site. It seems that little has been formally written about the Waspnest brickworks as, despite much interest from staff and other library users, nothing else was brought to light. Research on the internet (www.rootschat.com) revealed that the Waspnest Brickworks was founded around 1909 by two builders, Edward Silcock and Edwin Hattersley, together with a joiner called Arthur Heath and Arthur Gibbons, a butcher. People remember the brickworks being there in 1956. At the time, the brick making clay was often extracted by a type of opencast mining by boring and the firing of explosives. The clay extracted would be ground and mixed with water. The clay would then be pressed and formed into moulds, dried and then fired in ovens. Apparently, the Waspnest bricks have a blue centre when broken. As coal was one of the main industries in the area and clay formed part of the underlying strata associated with the geology of the coal seams, it was inevitable that the two would go hand in hand. The brickworks at Inkerman Colliery would have provided bricks to line the shafts and seams and possibly to build the Inkerman Cottages. The Rod Knoll mine at Old
Brampton mined some small coal seams but specialised in the extraction of fire clay. The Ashgate pottery made Bramptonware pots from the local clay. There are many potteries marked on the old maps. The excavations for the clay for the Waspnest works left a huge hole which, being clay lined, filled with water and was used by all the local children as a free swimming pool. People still remember swimming there, although it wasn’t always pleasant as dead dogs sometimes floated in the water. The pool was filled in when a local child drowned. The land was grassed over to make Inkerman Park. In 2010 pupils from Old Hall Junior School helped the Mayor and Mayoress of Chesterfield to officially open the new Waspnest play area in the park. Brampton Brewery (www.bramptonbrewery.com) has a connection with the Waspnest brickworks. The original Brampton Brewery’s logo featured a well muscled arm holding up a brick hammer together with the words Health and Strength. According to the Brewery website, the image of the strong arm and hammer relates to the brickworks in the area and the Wasp Nest Brick Company in particular, the name being the inspiration for one the brewery’s finest beers. According to Wikipedia, the original St Helena School also has a link to the bricks. In 1909 plans for the school buildings were passed and work started, though it was not an easy site to develop owing to the severe slope of the land. The best materials were used including local bricks from the Waspsnest Brick Works in Brampton. When the hallowed ground at Saltergate was demolished in 2010, fans were keen to have a memento. Internet research (thecfss.co.uk/ bob’s board) informed me that one fan asked the demolition crew for a brick and was given a Waspnest one which he proudly put on the mantelpiece, much to his wife’s annoyance! In 1934 the Waspnest brickworks was taken over by the Chesterfield Brick Company, which seemed to be the old company reformed. They ceased trading in the mid 1940s. If anyone has any more tales of the Waspnest brickworks, we would love to hear from you.

Christmas past. Jog on! Words by Will Jackson Picture from iStockphoto
If you have been on the moon for the last 3 months and have recently returned to earth, I must inform you that you have missed Christmas. If however, you were in any way unsure, or cared for that matter, the key signs that Christmas is over are all around us. Bin bags full of wrapping paper plastering the streets or wedged between wheelie bins (because no one has a clue when bin day is anymore), attempts to plant the now surplus Christmas trees in gardens without any possible hope of success and windows which no longer contain flashing lights. Everyone appears to have resumed into the New Year with no significant changes. The hangovers are gone; houses look less cluttered thanks to the absence of glittery stuff and you can fit things in the fridge again. The only thing to remind you that anything is different is that you occasionally put 2013 instead of 2014 when writing the date. Oh… and Joggers! Joggers are everywhere! In their numbers, they surely cannot be dissimilar to ants. I can’t seem to go anywhere without seeing people jogging. I did notice that the regular joggers left our streets in mid-December, obviously thinking ‘what’s the point?’, Christmas was on its way and fitness regimes can resume in the New Year. But the ones I see now aren’t regular, these are a new breed of jogger and from what I’m witnessing, its people who really shouldn’t be jogging at all. So, I introduce you… to the ‘New Year jogger’. This new breed of the ‘New Year jogger’ have justified over-indulging at Christmas by convincing themselves that they are going to shape up in the New Year. They are not dissimilar to the ‘regular jogger’ in their early festive behaviour (ie replacing jogging with over-indulging); but the difference between the two
is that the ‘New Year jogger’ only ever jogs for a 3-4 week period, beginning and ending in the month of January whereas the ‘regular jogger’ jogs continuously throughout the year. As February looms; the ‘New Year jogger’ resumes their normal annual past time of ‘not jogging’. I can only assume that at some point in January, they must realise that jogging is not for them after all and it all just seems like too much hard work to get up early in the morning or tear themselves from the telly at night in order to propel themselves around and around residential areas in the dark and the freezing cold. The upsetting alternative of avoiding chips and cake replaces the perils of jogging. Incidentally, if during the month of January, for heckling purposes, you need to distinguish the difference between your ‘regular jogger’ and your ‘New Year Jogger’, look out for how clean their trainers are. The ‘regular joggers’ trainers are generally pretty loppy due to their regular use, whereas the new breed are always in brand new gear. And remember, the good news is that come February there are less sweaty people staggering over the roads and pavements undertaking a hilarious form of propulsion that is neither a brisk walk nor a slow run. If however, you are really lucky you might catch one of them leaning on a fence or wall panting and trying not to be sick. To be fair though, they usually do this out of sight of the general public. Roll on Valentine’s Day hey? Overpriced flowers and repackaged unsold Christmas chocolates in heart shaped boxes. Happy New Year for 2013! And as always, thanks for reading!
