Intro Hi and welcome to the March edition. I’ve been enjoying the Winter Olympics whilst pulling S40 Local together this month and as I write we’ve won two medals, not bad for a country that isn’t renowned for its snow and great to see some positive news amidst all the gloomy weather. Following up on a number of concerns raised by local residents after last month’s article about the Chatsworth Road Conservation proposals, I’m awaiting a response from Chesterfield Borough Council before I can give you any more information. I’m hoping to be able to bring further news in the next edition. This month we welcome some new advertisers and feature articles on some of our local businesses, a new Chesterfield Triathlon Club, new ladies’ choir and loads more. Thank you for continuing to share your news and for supporting so many of the local clubs and events featured in the ‘What’s on.’ We receive some very positive feedback about the high turnout to these events. Andrew Evans wrote in asking us to feature the Chesterfield Photographic Society competition winners which we are only too delighted to do. You’ll find these wonderful photographs featured on page 14, a massive thank you to winner Steve Williams for allowing us to use his winning shot on this month’s cover. Let’s hope the rain stops so the next edition isn’t wet when it’s delivered! Don’t forget to follow us on Facebook ‘S40 Local’ and it’s Mother’s Day on 31 March, please remember to shop local and support our independent businesses wherever you can. That’s it ‘til April. Paul.
“Really enjoy the S40 magazine and thanks for the quality information and articles you bring through our letter boxes. Kind regards, Rosie”

“Not only did we love David’s design ideas but he was able to provide handleless gloss doors with solid granite work surfaces topped off with full glass splashbacks. The Amtico floor was so stunningly practical we chose to use it on not only the kitchen, but also the dining room, hallway, utility and washroom. Thanks again David.” Shirley and Dave of Bolsover.

30 Years Imperial Windows
Celebrates Three Decades in Chesterfield Words by Paul Chapman Imperial Windows, founded, owned and managed by Garry Hodgson, is celebrating 30 years of their personal, friendly and successful business. Garry lives in Somersall with his wife and daughter, who owns JJ Florists, above the Imperial Windows showroom, at 3 Old Road the junction with Chatsworth Road. Over the past three decades the name Imperial Windows has become synonymous with quality, professionalism and personal service. Garry prides himself on providing an excellent, customer-orientated service supplying windows, doors, conservatories, soffits and fascias. Garry is joiner by trade and as so, he’s a perfectionist, today he oversees every element of the job from initial design to completion of installation and offers his personal guarantee of satisfaction with every job. “I believe that a great job coupled with a professional caring service are the two key ingredients for running a successful business” Garry explained. Imperials windows have a wide range of products on offer using Rehau’s quality window and door products, Planitherm energy saving glass, Solidor composite doors and Rocal doors and panels manufactured in the UK, to name just a few, Garry is committed to sourcing and using the best products. “With this approach to business, things have gone from strength to strength with an ever-growing band of satisfied customers. Word of mouth is the biggest asset with much of the work coming through recommendation” says Garry. “I am happy to spend as much time as it takes with each customer to advise on which windows would best match their property and guide them through the choices” he explains. “With people looking for extra living space these days, conservatories are a great option and can really enhance your property. With a
Page 18 www.s40local.co.uk
wide range available, we can recommend and design solutions that work” says Garry. “Our showroom on Old Road showcases external doors, french doors, windows and we have samples from all our uPVC, composite and hardwood ranges. It’s a better way to select your products than viewing on a website, I think this really helps customers make the right choice and gives people confidence in the products we have on offer. I’m not at the showroom for standard opening hours as I’m out and about surveying and keeping an eye on jobs but if you give me a call I’m more than happy to call in at your home and then meet in the showroom to help you select the right products.” If you are in the market for windows, doors, conservatories, soffits or fascias give Garry a call to see how he can help.
Thanks to Mike Snow at Reflections Magazine for his contribution to this article.

Chesterfield
Marathon On Sunday 14th September 2014 over 1,000 athletes and runners will be pounding the streets of Chesterfield and raising money for Kids ‘n’ Cancer UK in the Chesterfield and Derbyshire Marathon. The idea of covering these sorts of distances (the equivalent of Chesterfield to Glossop in a straight line!) might seem a bit daunting, but to many it’s one of life’s challenges. The event provides four different race options, the full marathon at 26 miles and 385 yards, the half marathon, a team relay event unique to the Chesterfield Marathon which enables a team of 4 people to enter and run the race in relay – runner 1 taking on 4.7 miles, runner 2 follows with 3.43 miles of the course, runner 3 has the longest stint at 9.51 and runner 4 does a slightly shorter but apparently tougher 8.56 miles PLUS a fun run. John Hanc, running writer is quoted as stating “I’ve learned that finishing a marathon isn’t just an athletic achievement. It’s a state of mind; a state of mind that says anything is possible.” So if you want to join in, and don’t have the state of mind for full marathon, there’s something for everyone and there are still spaces available. The UK boasts marathons from over 500 locations, so Chesterfield is up against some stiff competition, but as Mike Hyman, founder of Kids ‘n’ Cancer UK, puts it “it would be difficult to find a prettier or more appealing UK venue than the stunning and historic market town of Chesterfield, graced with appealing architecture and pretty buildings, cobbled streets, one of Europe’s largest famous aspects, the Crooked Spire”. “It’s not the first Chesterfield marathon, however the last full one was over 20 years ago in 1990, and I’m keen to put Chesterfield
Page 22 www.s40local.co.uk
and Derbyshire back on the athletics map” says Mike. “We hope it will be an event to be proud of and attract up to 10,000 people into our town on the day. As well as the races, there’s a funfair, live bands, market stalls, food & beer tents all planned in Queen’s Park concluding what should be a fantastic day with fireworks.” The organisation on the day will involve 300 people supporting the runners, managing the roads and stewards looking after the whole event. The route starts in Queen’s Park, round town past the Crooked Spire, down to Hornsbridge Roundabout and along the A617 up to Temple Normanton, this being the first time the road has been closed for runners, before returning to finish in Queen’s Park. If you want to help they are looking for volunteers on the day. “Chesterfield Borough Council has been terrifically supportive “ comments Mike. “We have a seven hour completion target for all runners, so the impact on roads will be significant so it is great to have their backing. “We’re still looking for sponsors, a number of local businesses are already involved in the day and evening events from holding stalls to providing services. We do have space for more businesses to show their support so if you can, it would be great to hear from you.” The event is being organised by the fundraising team at Kids ‘n’ Cancer UK, a Chesterfield based charity, whose patrons include Rick Wakeman, Bobby Davro, Mick Miller and Miki Travis, they offer support to children and families across the country. “Our target for the first marathon is quite realistic, we want to provide a fully funded bus to get local cancer sufferers to Weston Park, Sheffield. Being able to operate the bus,
free of charge, will enable us to get patients to treatment. We’re also hoping the event will help raise awareness of the charity and the issues faced by families. The thing about cancer is, it has no selection criteria. It can affect anyone and although we’d like to think it won’t, it could be someone reading this, who has a child that may benefit from our fundraising activities” says Mike. Mike & June Hyman founded Kids ‘n’ Cancer UK in 2010. “I chaired an appeal to raise funds for a 13 year old boy with prostate cancer, whose mother had appealed for help to raise the funds to get him to the University of Florida Proton Therapy Institute (UFPTI) in Jacksonville Florida for proton therapy” explains Mike. “Unfortunately he became too ill to travel and on the advice of his Oncologist he received radiotherapy in this country instead. Having been involved in raising funds in the past (mainly brain tumour cases) I soon realised that no charity covers this unique situation and families are left with no support if funding gets rejected, every child deserves the chance to benefit from the best available treatment for their tumour. “Seeing the heartbreak and stress that families go through has made us determined to do all in our power to ensure this situation does not happen again. Hence, KIDS ’N’ CANCER UK was born.” Kids ‘n’ Cancer UK helps fly patients and their families out to the States for a type of radiation treatment called proton beam therapy which is not available in the UK. The proton therapy creates a pinpoint beam that targets the tumour without any harmful radiation exiting from the body which happens with conventional radiotherapy (photons). The team at Kids ‘n’ cancer UK help to
“I’ve learned that finishing a marathon isn’t just an athletic achievement. It’s a state of mind; a state of mind that says anything is possible.” John Hanc, running writer support the family in many different ways on their epic and challenging journeys to the United States. This includes providing, in some cases, a chaperone, living expenses and flights for other members of the family who are not covered under the program, this enable the families to stay together over the course of the three months in the USA. They are also campaigning to encourage changes in government policy that will enable families to recover lost earnings when they have to take unpaid leave for treatment, after all this is a journey that they are forced to take which is not of their choosing. As I write, the event is seven months away, long enough to go from couch to marathon in 20 weeks so there is just time to get fit! We’ll be following the progress of Brampton Manor’s Jogging Club over the next few weeks to see how they’re progressing (see Lucy’s article on page 22). Kids ‘n’ cancer UK also has supporters that are willing to help with healthcare, fitness and nutrition. For further information contact Andrea Hooley Kids n Cancer UK on 07507 236407. If you do want to run or want to get involved, the event details can be found at www. chesterfieldmarathon.co.uk where there is an online application form. Please mention S40 Local Page 23

Can anyone run a marathon? Words by Lucy Shakespeare In theory, yes they can! You just need support and to follow a training guide. To avoid injury and get your fitness levels up it is ideal to get yourself fit enough to run a 10k before starting your marathon training plan. Trainer Lucy Shakespeare from Brampton Manor, shares valuable advice from training her clients and her own personal experience of running marathons.
Lucy’s Top Tips 1. It’s a marathon not a sprint: As a beginner runner it’s important to build up steadily. The best way to succeed is to follow a steady progressive plan. There are various different plans which will guide you towards finishing your marathon. Study them and choose the one that is the most realistic with regards to ‘training commitment’ and your current levels of running fitness. Don’t be tempted to load the miles too quickly or you’ll risk early injury, recovery just isn’t fun. 2. The right kit is essential: Sound like a great excuse to go shopping? Simple things like a technical running top and shorts/tights don’t have to cost the earth but they’ll really make a difference to your comfort. Running shoes however are worth investing in and taking a bit of time to find the right ones, most running shops will have a treadmill set up to assess your gate and assess your running style, all of this will help you find the right shoes, remember running shoes have roughly 300-500 miles in them... and don’t leave buying your new kit until the big day. Many have made this mistake, me included and chaffing for 26.1 miles is not fun. 3. It’s not just about running: The temptation is to spend all your time pounding the streets and getting the miles in but allow time for strength, flexibility and core work such as Pilates and yoga etc. This will help prevent injury and support the tasks we are asking the body to perform. We will be introducing running specific strength and core classes at Brampton Manor to support runners along their way. 4. Fuel your body: Fuelling your body is important particularly as the miles start to increase. Try to eat a small, easily digestible snack 1-2 hours before your run, snacks like a banana and bagel are good. Consuming snacks during the run, especially runs of 10 to 20+ miles, will help replenish stores and energy. The key to eating during the run is that anything you consume should be quick and easy to digest, such as fruits or energy gel/bars. After a run, your body is Page 24 www.s40local.co.uk
begging for replenishment. It is mostly begging more carbohydrates to store as glycogen and for protein to help muscles recover. Can you believe a glass of chocolate milk is an easy way to replenish your body after a run? 5. Make it work for you: Remember your training plan is a guide to get you to the finish line, the sessions are not set in stone and can be moved around to fit your life, family and work commitments. Missing the odd run isn’t the end of the world! 6. Your not alone: Join Jog Derbyshire at Brampton Manor, for free. It’s a fun friendly jog club open to everyone. Running alone can be hard work, at Brampton Manor we have three organised runs per week catering for beginners and beyond. From May we will have an additional Sunday morning session to get you through those long runs. 7. Hitting the wall: This happens to pretty much every runner at some point. Marathon training takes a lot of mental and physical strength, many of us go through the ‘I’m never running again’ phase so remember you’re not alone in your thoughts, talk to other runners and try and remember why your doing it. 8. Reward yourself: Give your self little rewards throughout your training - arrange a lunch with your new running friends when you hit a goal distance, spoil yourself a little... whatever you choose it will feel good as you appreciate what you’re doing. 9. Running makes the world a brighter place: Whatever your reason for running, to lose weight, to make friends, to beat your time, to conquer stress or to blow off some steam, one thing’s for sure, if you make the effort to get out and run, you won’t regret it. 10. Now you’ve done it, what next? A huge sigh of relief, a huge pat on the back and a huge drink. It could be an emotional finish line, feel proud, shout it from the roof tops, most importantly keep up your new healthy way of life. You’ve achieved so, celebrate.
The best advice and a totally personal service.

Pooky Active
The one-stop children’s shop Words by Paul Chapman
Things don’t stand still for long on Chatsworth Road and someone who’s never accused of this is Victoria Holmes from Pooky Active. “I like to think of Pooky Active as a one-stop children’s shop” explains Victoria, “a place where you can buy clothing, footwear, toys, gifts, accessories, personalised gifts from local independent makers and even take advantage of a children’s hairdressing service.” In the main shop you’ll find the toys, clothing and footwear. The toys are typically traditional, mainly wooden and include everything from pocket money toys to pedal cars - with a good range of suitable presents for children’s parties. Pooky Active’s clothing range is casual, mainly from British suppliers based in Devon and Cornwall, outdoorsy and much of it organic. Alongside the UK brands is KoziKidz a Swedish manufacturer which is 100% waterproof clothing with reflective strips to make sure children can be seen. Footwear is also available including school shoes, casual shoes, Chipmunks funky footwear, wellies, and the ever popular Muckboots - essential at the moment. And, it doesn’t stop there, upstairs in the shop is a gallery and studio space. Once a month Victoria invites a children’s hairdresser to the shop, but this is no ordinary hairdressing experience - Victoria turns haircuts from a chore into a treat with cartoons on the TV whilst hair is trimmed and tidied. Pooky Active also plays host to parties in the studio for 10 under-five year olds or 12 overfives, offering ‘Glitz Parties’ for girls that like to sparkle, ‘Teddy Making Parties’, ‘Jewellery Parties’, ‘Peppa Pig Parties’ and ‘Pirate Parties’ - the packages can be fully tailored and can Page 30 www.s40local.co.uk
include food. “The separate spaces are great, it means we can entertain the kids in the studio, whilst Mum or Dad relax with a tea or coffee in the gallery space” says Victoria. When not being a relaxing lounge for parents, the gallery is dedicated to displaying products from small local independent makers of children’s gifts, giving a shop window for their unique personalised gifts. Over the February half term Claire Stead of Bella Creations, whose products are on display in the gallery, will be holding sewing workshops and there will be a whole host of other workshops taking place during the Easter break together with a baby toddler photo competition organised by Lyn at Wings Photography. You may have spotted that since they opened two and a half years ago, Pooky has been moving around, they expanded into the property next door, when they opened Pooky Active, and more recently consolidated the toys and clothing into the new premises, to put everything back under one roof, whilst continuing to increase what’s on offer. If you can’t get down or prefer to shop from home, you can browse their products on their online shop, and use the free local delivery service at www.pookykids.co.uk.

Hardwick Probus Club Words by Paul Chapman Every month, on the fourth Tuesday, at The Olde House pub on Loundlsey Green Road, the Hardwick Probus Club come together at 10 am. The ‘gentleman only clubs’ are based on a traditional Probus approach and are aimed at providing a friendship group and social occasion for retired businessmen, who might previously have had little time to meet people. The old membership criteria of being retired is less important, the emphasis being to meet like-minded people and enjoy fellowship. I recently met Paul Broadhead, Hardwick Probus Club Secretary, and George Masson at the Chesterfield Golf Club to learn about the clubs. Run by a voluntary committee, the £20 a year subs go towards the booking of a room, speaker fees and a little admin for the 40 members. Probus clubs exist worldwide, formerly as ‘gentleman’s clubs’ but with recent changes seeing more mixed or separate ladies clubs emerging. I was surprised to learn that there are six Probus clubs in Chesterfield alone, alongside the Hardwick club, there are also Cavendish, Chesterfield and Scarsdale for gentlemen and Eastwood and Nightingale for the ladies. Hardwick Probus Club was the fourth launched by the Chesterfield Rotary Club in 1982, as a consequence of people having to wait to join other Chesterfield Probus clubs due to their popularity and success. The format for the sessions is fairly informal, “the main reason for the clubs is fellowship, at our meetings we have a tea or coffee and a quick chat, then a guest speaker gives us a talk about an interesting topic. The next meeting on 25 March we have Stephen Flinders who will be giving us a talk on ‘Stanton, The Iron Dale’ from 1840” says Paul.
Page 34 www.s40local.co.uk
“On 22 April David Templeman will be talking about Sheffield, during the Tudor and Stuart eras. We have occasional trips out to local places of interest and an annual chairman’s outing, but we are looking for new members to get involved and bring new ideas and inspiration” explains Paul. As Ron Presswood clearly explains in his History of Hardwick Probus Club, “Sadly, clubs of this type can easily fall into decline, since by its very nature it will inevitably have a high turnover‘, as a result the Hardwick club is keen to recruit new members.” So, if you think this style of fellowship group would be interesting and you would like to get involved, please get in touch with Paul Broadhead on 07912 258674 or email him on paul@fallows-end.co.uk to find out more. History The Probus Organisation, is an offshoot of the Rotary Club movement and was formed in the United Kingdom in 1965. In 1965 Fred Carnill, a member of the Welwyn Garden City Rotary Club, met with other retired friends for morning coffee, mostly with professional and business backgrounds. It was May 1966 before a Committee was formed with Harold Blanchard as Chairman, who is seen as one of the ‘Father Figures’ of Probus along with James Raper. The name Probus was suggested by a member who took the first three letters from PROfessional and BUSiness. It had the advantage that is was a Latin word from which Probity was derived. The Probus Club met with success and new clubs were founded.

Exhibition: 3rd March onwards
“I only began sewing in 2010, completing basic sewing courses and then going on to more advanced techniques such as appliqué and freemachine embroidery. I had always believed that I couldn’t sew, mainly thanks to being told this by my textile tutor at secondary school! I soon discovered a love for free-machine embroidery (described by Kirsty Allsopp as ‘the crack cocaine of the crafting world!’ and I have to agree!). Free-machine embroidery is basically drawing with your sewing machine – either freehand or by sewing over images. I began making purses and cushions and embellishing them with appliqué and embroidery, but it was only when a friend asked me if I could embroider a bird onto a piece of fabric so that she could frame it that I realised the potential of what I was doing. I mainly take my inspiration from Mother Nature and my work often features birds, butterflies, bees and other fauna and flora. I am very excited to be able to exhibit my work at Straightcurves in Chesterfield – Karen (the owner) is amazing and makes me breathless just hearing what she is up to! Work at the exhibition will be available to buy, but I am also happy to take orders for commissions if you would like something specific.” Sarah Sewell is a Mapperley based textile artist who creates beautiful framed pictures using just a simple sewing machine.

Business News Highfield House Farm Shop New Tea Rooms
Moorland Natural Therapy Centre A year on…
Set on the beautiful Stonedge, just past the Peak Edge Hotel on the Darley Road, you’ll find Highfield House Farm Shop and Tea Rooms. Matthew Prince runs the family business, which opened as a farm shop in 1996, and has recently expanded to open a new Tea Room.
Ellena and Robin Outram have been studying hard to keep up with the latest Osteopathy research, methods and techniques. “Robin has enhanced his skills with ‘grumpy babies’, visceral osteopathy (stomach problems and IBS) and acupuncture to help with headaches” says Ellena. “Word is spreading of the benefits of HypnoBirthing, thanks to our work with lovely babies and toddlers, support of local midwives and the recent press coverage regarding Kate Middleton and the type of birth she may or indeed may not have had. It’s very rewarding to see scared and frightened parents-tobe, become happy, excited, relaxed and reassured about birth and meeting their child, by the end of the course.”
The tea room is open from 9am Monday to Saturday and 10am on Sunday “It’s a great place to meet up for a day out in the Peak District or just to enjoy a hearty breakfast” says Matt, “we serve a full English breakfast until 11:30am each day, using locally sourced produce from our own butchery and have a full range of light lunches and afternoon teas available”. “Our customers come to stock up on meat, veg and products from the shop and can now stay and enjoy a meal or a cuppa in the tea room, with great views and products that are all local. Some you can even see growing up on the fields around the farm “ adds Matt.
Brampton Brewery Loyalty Card! If you like a pint you can now be rewarded for it - result! Brampton Brewery has launched a new promotional loyalty card in The Rose & Crown and Tramway Tavern. Each time you enjoy a pint of your favourite Brampton Ale in either pub you can ask for a stamp on your loyalty card. Once you’ve collected eight stamps (four from each pub) you can then exchange your completed card for a free pint of Brampton Ale in either the Rose or Tramway Tavern. The Loyalty Card scheme started on Monday 10 February, so next time you are in either Pub, don’t forget to pick up your card and start collecting.

“Our hypnotherapy client base is growing and people have reported that it has made a big difference to their lives. Ellena recently qualified in the Fertile Body Method (www. thefertilebody.com), hypnotherapy cannot, obviously, get somebody pregnant, however, it is very effective in helping to support with any stress, anxiety or pressure. Did you know the hypothalamus gland regulates both our reproductive hormones and stress hormones, so if we are under stress or pressure we are unable to release the ‘correct’ amount of hormones which can negatively affect conception and that’s where we can help. We also work with people who have suffered miscarriages or chosen to terminate a pregnancy to help come to terms with personal situations and even provide help with health issues surrounding reproductive organs (both male and female) and regulating the menstrual cycle.“ “Sometimes, with great sadness, couples are unable to conceive and need emotional support through other parenting routes or to see a future without children, Ellena has used hypnotherapy methods with some local couples and the feedback has been really positive.” “Please take a look at our website www. moorlandnaturaltherapycentre.co.uk or give them a call on 01246 768140 to have an informal chat or to book an appointment (daytime, evening or weekend).” “Thank you to the S40 readership for your continued support of our small family run clinic.”

Linacre Words Val Woollven and Pictures by Graham Woollven
Many S40 residents will have enjoyed walks round the three reservoirs at Linacre. Thanks to the management of Severn Trent Water, the £1 parking fee gives two hours access to the reservoirs with well maintained paths and duckboards, information posts, glimpses of wildlife and beautiful view points. In the recent wet and windy weather, the reservoirs have been a refuge for those who crave fresh air and can stretch their legs in sheltered woodlands and on relatively mud free paths. An information board by the middle reservoir tells you that the building of the first reservoir (the lower one, holding 140.9 million litres of water) was agreed in 1855 by Act of Parliament. All new reservoirs are subject to an Act of Parliament. The upper reservoir holding 575 million litres was approved by the 1885 Act and the middle one, holding 410.9 million litres, followed in 1904. The reservoirs supplied 70,000 customers at that time. A sand and chlorination filtration plant was added in 1909 after complaints about the smell and taste of the water. A quote at the time informs us that the poor people used the water for soup, the middle classes bathed in it and the rich people watered their gardens with it! The town of Chesterfield and its surrounding area has grown so much that it is now supplied by other Derbyshire water sources. What and who was there before the reservoirs - fields, woodland, farms and a brook? The name Linacre is Anglo-Saxon origin: in Anglo Saxon times people were either named after the place where they lived, their profession or their appearance. ‘Linacre’ describes an area of ground (acer) used for flax growing (lin) so presumably flax was grown as a crop here at some point in history. The founder of the Linacre line was Lamberte de Linacre (or Lynacre), date unknown. The name Linacre appears in the Domesday Book. Burkes Armoury in 1841 records that over twenty generations of Linacres had lived in Linacre Hall near Chesterfield in Derbyshire. Thomas Linacre (1460 – 1524) built Linacre Hall on land which is now occupied by the picnic area
and car park at Linacre Reservoirs. Thomas was born at Brampton: his memorial plaque in the Parish Church at Old Brampton records: ‘To him was chiefly due the revival of classical learning in this country’. Scholar, physician and priest, Thomas Linacre was renowned for his academic achievement and excellence which elevated him to a prominent position in the society of the day. He was a Fellow of All Souls College Oxford, founder and First President of the Royal College of Physicians and Tutor to both Erasmus (who in turn was Tutor to King Henry VIII) and Sir Thomas More. He was the founder of Linacre College in Oxford: their website records him as having been born in Canterbury (he actually received his early education at Canterbury Cathedral School). There is record of a James Lynacre of Lynacre Hall in Derbyshire giving £25 to the Armada Fund in 1588. The Linacre line died out by 1600 and there seems to be a gap from then on in terms of information about Linacre Hall. White’s Directory of Derbyshire states that by 1857 Lineacre Hall was a farm house and a very ancient building. The Derbyshire Times of December 9th 1938 explains that the farm lately occupied by Mr John Riggot was the site of Linacre Hall. The hall was demolished at some point between these dates and the land was later flooded to make a reservoir. The Chesterfield Water Works and Gas Light Co supplied many villages with water from the works situated at Linacre Wood. The Chesterfield Waterworks and Gaslight Company was formed by Act of Parliament in 1825 and gas was first supplied to Chesterfield in 1826. It later became the Chesterfield, Bolsover and Clowne Water Board. There is no flax to be seen there now but a visit to Linacre Reservoirs will give a view of tufted ducks, great crested grebes and coots as well as a magnificent display of bluebells in spring. Well worth a visit. Please mention S40 Local Page 47

Honey Belles Ladies Choir No experience necessary The Honey Belles started as an idea to get mums out of the house, including me, for one evening a week to do something they loved that didn’t involve children – something just for them. As I went to play groups and other children’s activities I spoke to mums who were more than interested, so I took a leap of faith and booked the Bassett Rooms for our first rehearsal.

I called on an old work colleague who I hoped would jump at the chance to accompany an all female choir. He, of course, said yes. We had run a successful choir at the high school and college we both worked at and knew how great singing with an enthusiastic group could be. Our membership has grown since putting the Honey Belles on Facebook and Twitter and we now have our doors open to all women over the age of 18. Since January we have 20 members. Some have joined us with a musical background and some have joined us as they love to sing. We are creating a great 3 part harmony sound and strive to sing a varied program of music from Gaga to Lloyd Webber. Our first public performance with be at Ashover’s May Day carnival where we will also have a stall to promote the choir and hopefully find a few more voices to join our group. We also are in talks with choirs, churches and hotels that have shown interest in the Honey Belles performing for them. My aim is to work towards a big, winter concert to show off the choir and hopefully earn enough profit to go into a recording studio next year to lay down a few tracks. I want the choir to make memories that they can be proud of, as well as doing a few cool things along the way. If you want to get involved the choir meets Wednesdays from 7:45 to 9:30pm at the Bassett Rooms, Ashover. Kate Challinor-Moss is their Musical Director and can be contacted on 07890 095 683, via email kate_challinor@hotmail.com, or facebook and twitter.

Garden Tips
Garden Things Words by Colin Harrison March is when the gardening year really starts to get going, so there’s lots to do; keeping on top of it all is the key to success. The exceptionally wet and mild weather over winter may have caused some plants to start into growth early, but here are some of the jobs gardeners would normally expect to do in March: 1.
Plant out onion sets, shallots and early potatoes; once the foliage of the latter starts to show, be prepared to cover it if a frost is forecast. Some birds think the tips of onions and shallots are worms and pull them up; just push them back if this happens. Tightly stretching a few lines of black thread across the bed will help prevent this happening.
2.
If the weather is such that the lawn starts to grow, and it’s dry enough, give it a cut with the blades set fairly high.
3.
Most root vegetable seeds can be sown now, although some might appreciate covering with a cloche or horticultural fleece – check the instructions on the packet. Some hardy salads can also be sown, e.g. radish, rocket and lettuce.
4.
Dig compost into the soil. If the wet weather persists try to avoid walking directly on the soil, which will compact it, but instead stand on a length of planking or something to spread your weight.
5.
Weeds will start into growth, so try to prevent them getting a hold by regular weeding (but see above).
6.
Sow sweet peas – you can use a length of guttering as a seed tray. Keep frost free.
7.
Treat yourself and visit a garden centre to buy bulbs for summer colour, which can be planted straight away.
8.
Cut back dogwoods, willows, elders and winter flowering jasmine; also hard prune buddleias if not done yet.
9.
Dead head daffodils, letting the foliage die down naturally, then removing it when it starts to turn yellow. This is when the bulbs reserves of energy are restored, and it prepares for next year. Tying it up prevents this happening efficiently, and it doesn’t look particularly nice.
10. Most perennials will have started back into growth, so can be lifted and divided if necessary. If you have heavy soil try to improve the drainage when replanting, either by incorporating compost or grit.
