Intro Hi All The sun is shining as I write, the wind is doing it’s best to take the roof off the shed... BUT IT’S NOT RAINING! It’s been a strange four weeks, this edition started slow - seven days ago I was looking at it thinking ‘it’s lacking something...’ roll on the end of the week and it’s packed with interesting content, well I think so. We talk Real Ale with CAMRA, meet businesses new to Chatsworth Road, talk Little Fish Events with Hannah Leaning, help Destination Chesterfield launch the 2014 Retail Awards, John Lilley shares his memories of Brampton, prompted by Val Woolven’s Waspnest Bricks article in the Winter edition, we meet the Holymoorside and Walton Parish Council, look back 125 years with Chesterfield Spire Cycling Club, Brampton Rovers shout out for help, plus we have all the usual stuff. Thanks to Hannah Wheeler for the cover, S40 Local is five years old this month, who’d have thought it? I muse over the past and the future on page 4 and thank everyone on pages 5 and 6, there are quite a lot of you to thank these days. It all feels a little more positive of late, perhaps it’s just because when I open the curtains in the morning I can see sunlight and not water? Another 12 months and 10 editions under the S40 Local belt and we’re suddenly celebrating our fifth birthday! Each April I think; how shall I celebrate this year? What shall I do? What shall I do with the cover? One thing about being totally independent is there is no one to say what you can and can’t do, so after a quick ideas share including a photograph of me - quickly dismissed... we opted for the illustration of Chatsworth Road as a number ‘5’, Hannah Wheeler applied her illustrative skills and I think the result looks fantastic. When I started out with S40 Local I completely underestimated how much Chatsworth Road would influence what we did. My aim was to provide a shop front for small traders; plumbers, electricians, painters etc... people who, like me at the time, didn’t have a way for people to know what they had on offer, apart from the sign writing on their van. Today, we do have a good number of small tradesmen and women, and your calls keep them busy but we also have many Chatsworth Road based businesses and many from further afield. And I’m humbled by the numbers - 561 businesses have placed almost 5,000 adverts with me over the last five years - all those businesses are named on the next two pages. I can’t thank them enough for taking the time to get in touch and trusting me with their adverts. Without this support I wouldn’t be able to do the other stuff that I think is so important - promoting our local businesses, features of what I hope are interesting community stories, driving forward the Chatsworth Road Festival with the rest of the team, promoting community events, the pages of free What’s On listings, the vast array of regular events and the free classifieds service. I’ve mentioned before; S40 Local doesn’t have a huge team of people behind it - it’s been me, with help from a few fantastic people - some of whom have changed over time. Hannah Wheeler joined me doing three short days each week, designing adverts, doing lovely illustrations and occasionally making the tea. Cathy keeps on top of all the invoicing and payments, an essential and time consuming job! I have a small team of deliverers who all live locally, my sister-in-law Louise Hepplewhite who proof reads each edition, usually over Sunday lunch at my motherin-law’s, an array of talented writers and contributors - you know who you all are... and then of course there’s my wife Nicola, who helps produce and edit copy, puts up with grumpy Paul on copy week, and more typically comes up with ideas for articles and sends me off to find out more. Thanks to you all, without you there would be no S40 Local. What we don’t have is a sales force or advertising team - I like to think that this sets us apart, the hard sell is not my style, plus I don’t have the time or resources. If you would like S40 Local to support your business we would love to have you on board, but you’ll need to call me and let me know (still can’t find a window cleaner to advertise though...)! So what next? I’m looking to bring in some more people to support with the production of S40 Local, so I can look at other ways of supporting the community. With Hannah on board we’re doing more to embrace the world of social media - Twitter, Facebook etc. I am looking forward to meeting new businesses, sharing more information and seeing Chesterfield and our area continue to flourish! Wendy's Wooftie Walk. This well loved local event returns this year. The walk has raised invaluable funds for Helen's Trust, a local charity which enables people of any age with any terminal illness to remain at home throughout their illness. Maths can be quite daunting for some children but with a little fun at home you can improve their knowledge and accuracy with numbers. Here are some tried and tested fun ways to help: Play Slap: This is a game pioneered by Jo at Kip McGrath and it is easy to play at home. Suppose you want to improve your childâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ability with tables. Write the answers to the 7 and 8 times tables (for example) onto pieces of paper and then stick them with blue tack around the room, or even in the garden using clothes pegs. In the beginning a brief history of CAMRA Words by Jane lefley. Illustrations by Hannah Wheeler In the beginning there were four founding fathers, all from the Manchester/Liverpool area, who went on a pub crawl one night and were so disappointed in the beer quality they decided action was required, and subsequently formed the Campaign for the Revitalisation of Ale. Whilst they had gained 1000 members by 1973, things really took off when ‘revitalisation’ was dropped and the term ‘real ale’ was put forward (it is said that a man called Peter Linley from Clowne came up with the name) and entered everyday language. Real ale drinkers may wish to occasionally toast the health of Michael Hardman, Graham Lees, Bill Mellor and Jim Makin, who launched CAMRA in 1971 to prevent the complete destruction of cask ales in Britain. But what lay behind the decline in beer quality, that gave rise to CAMRA? In his book ‘The Ale Trail’ published in 1995, Roger Protz suggests a root cause occurred in the industry in the 1960s and 1970s, in particular the decline in the quality of beer at that time can be attributed to the loss of many experienced publicans during World War Two (either in military service or during bombings over here). The new generation of publicans lacked experience in keeping cask beer, and untimely deaths had prevented the knowledge being passed down in the usual way. Brewers therefore moved over to bottled, and then keg beers to overcome the issue of many landlords not knowing how to look after cask ale, with resultant poor quality.

…and then there was the Good Beer Guide. CAMRA’s flagship publication, first published in 1974 and now on its 38th edition. The 1974 edition has two versions - the original stated that Watney’s beers should be avoided ‘like the plague’ and was immediately withdrawn by the publishers, to be replaced with a more sensitive appraisal of Watney’s delights - ‘avoid at all costs’. A copy recently sold on eBay for £168. Early editions are said to contain a few quirks – a Suffolk pub on the London Underground, a pub that claimed a car park yet had to be reached via a half mile walk along a canal towpath, a non-existent pub that was apparently a complete spoof and even a county that never existed. Another major development came in 2007 with the launch of the LocAle scheme, an idea originally developed by Steve Westby from Nottingham CAMRA to help promote locally brewed beers and deal with environmental issues. This came on the back of the closure of Hardy & Hansons brewery in 2006 which led to new owners Greene King transporting beer (which is mostly water) 115 miles from Bury St Edmunds to the pubs that they acquired in the Nottingham and North Derbyshire area. Pubs received ‘LocAle’ accreditation if they always offered at least one beer from a brewery within a predetermined number of miles (generally 20 or 25 miles). The Chesterfield Branch of CAMRA was established at a meeting held on the 18 July 1977 at the Furnace Inn, Goytside (which

became the Unicorn Tavern, now sadly closed) where there was a large turn out of 23 members. The first committee was elected with Doug Leeming as Chairman â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a post which he was to hold until 1991. In fact the branch has had only 9 Chairmen to date, with Dave Holden, Roy Shorrock, Jim McIntosh, Mary Keast, Nigel Mower, Rhoda Waygood, Andy Thackeray, Jane Lefley and our present Chairman, Mick Potman completing the line-up. In 1981 the first branch real ale guide was produced. It was small but informative, recording the 137 pubs in our area that served real ale, including our first microbrewery, Winkles Saxon Cross from Buxton. Subsequently two editions of a Derbyshire Ale Guide were produced, albeit the most recent was in 1990. The branch has organized a number of beer festivals over the years. The first, jointly run with the Cavendish Round Table, was in November 1983 at the Goldwell rooms. It was a great success and became a two-day event in subsequent years. A total of four festivals were held at this venue, probably the best venue in town at that time, sadly now demolished. The next four events were held at the newly opened Winding Wheel Centre, which were followed by a further three at Chesterfield College Refectory, the last being in 1993. There was then a gap of six years before the branch returned to the Winding Wheel in 1999. The festival, always a sell-out, is now a regular event in the Chesterfield calendar. A second smaller festival, the Market Beer Festival in October, was first held in 2004 as part of the Chesterfield 800th Market Charter celebrations and is now an annual event. The branch is also involved in the Barrow Hill Roundhouse Rail Ale festival each May.

InnSpire newsletter was launched in May 1996 by a team led by Graeme Brown, supported by John McKaig, Roger Buck and Alan Wood. InnSpire is our key campaigning tool and has always been well supported by advertisers, primarily local pubs and others connected with the trade. In the early days articles had to be typed in at the printers and copies of photographs scanned; digital cameras, email and the internet make writing articles much easier nowadays! There have been a number of editors over the years, each has introduced improvements and expanded circulation. 15 years on and it is still essential reading, both for North Derbyshire real ale drinkers and, in recent years, for the wider world via the internet. Today the branch is stronger and more active than ever; 870 plus members, regular social functions, beer festivals which give more people the opportunity to try real ale and participate in local campaigns e.g. to prevent local pubs closing. Swimming In Stationery @Little Fish Events Words by Paul Chapman Little Fish Events is Hannah Leaning’s independent business selling event stationery and styling and planing weddings. Typical of many small enterprises Hannah has built up a business based on a great idea, good demand for the product and a lot of hard work. Little Fish runs from a small office above Moo Fashions on Chatsworth Road and also displays her work next door, in the Gallery at Pooky.

Once I began organising larger weddings, I found that people often struggled to find quirky stationery they liked, they wanted little finishing touches that just didn’t seem to exist, such as tiny tags to add to sparklers, or gifts to leave on the guests’ pillows at the hotel. They would ask me to help and when I couldn’t source what I wanted for them, I rolled up my sleeves and started making it.” says Hannah.

From the studio in Chesterfield they hand make personalised party invites, party bags and tags and fingerprint kits alongside a vast range of wedding stationery which they design, print, glitter... there is a lot of hand glittering going on... pack and send from Chatsworth Road.

So why the name Little Fish Events? “I was styling a Piscean’s 21st birthday where I needed to add interest to huge round tables. I used vases of tropical flowers, with real fish swimming around the stems. From this the name stuck” explains Hannah.

“We have around 80 designs which can be supplied across a wide range of products, from save the date cards, event stationery, such as orders of service and wine glass tokens, as well as decorative items like paper chains and bunting, all fully personalised.” The products are available via the website, but one of her most successful ventures was in applying to sell products via Not on The High Street.com “and the response has been great” Hannah enthuses.

Next on Hannah’s timeline came a husband and shortly after the first of three children. ‘Now how do I work a busy summer wedding season, with pre-school closed for the six week break?’ I thought, I decided to concentrate on expanding my stationery range to include children’s party invitations, as I could make them when the children were tucked up in bed, and I wasn’t inundated with orders in July and August, when Zac, Daisy and Noah needed me. My office was firstly under the stairs and then a walk in wardrobe.”

“I love design” says Hannah, “but my degree is in Creative Writing and Public Relations (PR), I never intended to be doing what I’m doing today but it was a route that evolved and I now enjoy it hugely.” Hannah started out in PR, working in driver training which lead to a job with Ford UK. She was heavily involved in the marketing and launch of the Ford Focus and it was during this time that she met some key sports personalities. “I really enjoyed the sports side, so much so that I moved to work with the British Triathlon team as soon as I saw an opportunity. Again one thing lead to another and I ended up working at the Arena in Nottingham, organising some amazing events, the Ice Hockey Superleague games, working with media teams across various TV networks and the event I’m most proud of was the Royal Jubilee visit by the Queen, the problem was, after being involved with this, other events just couldn’t match up. I was ready for a new challenge, and running my own business was something I had always wanted to do.” As an event organiser Hannah always got involved in helping with weddings and events for family and friends. Her mum was in catering and with her professional background, it was only a matter of time before she decided to change career direction and become a full time wedding planner.

As the children got older and started to exercise a little independence Hannah devoted more time to the business and quickly out-grew the cupboard. “The point I had to move out of the cupboard and into premises being when I secured the ‘Not on The High Street.com’ contract, Julia Radford works for me part time now, and there was definitely no room in the wardrobe for both of us with thousands of diamantes to attach to cards!” “As my young family grow up I find designs emerging due to my children’s influence.” “I love what I do, I still get a kick out of the 5am start for the odd wedding here and there, but the focus now is very much on the stationery products, it fits with my lifesyle; the kids, the school runs, my husband. Following our recent article on Wasp Nest Brick Company John Lilley from the Brampton Living History Group has provided memories of the Inkerman Pool that was sited next to the brick works. As well as playing on the Recreation Ground, we also used to explore and play in another totally different environment, also nearby. On the other side of Old Hall Road, opposite Barker Lane, was a semi-derelict brick works with adjacent overgrown tip and quarry. The brick works were known as Wasp Nest Brick Works. It was fun clambering on the rocks in the quarry and exploring the rock pool which had sticklebacks, newts and tadpoles in them. There were also two short lengths of narrow gauge rail track which ran from the brickyard into the quarry. The wagons used on the track were still in use. At a distance, we used to watch the empty wagons coming down one track and the filled the wagons returning on the other track back to the works. Presumably, the wagons were used to carry the coal and clay extracted from the quarry. Occasionally, the rocks had to be blasted with explosives. It is not clear when the brick works were built but directories, maps and Council Minutes suggest that it is around 1909, and by 1912, the Waspnest Brick Page 46 www.s40local.co.uk

and Tile Company was firmly established on the site with the brick kilns, chimney, quarry and rail track all in place. The joint owners of the Brick Company were two local builders, Edward Silcock and Edwin Hattersley, a joiner, Arthur Heath, and a butcher, Arthur Gibbons. No doubt the two builders were responsible for the erection of the brick works, and with a ready supply of bricks they built much property in Chesterfield. Edward Silcock, in particular, built the houses on Chester Street, Bank Street and Hope Street in Brampton, and two well known landmarks, the chimney stacks at the Electricity Works and at Robinsons’ Wheatbridge Mills. The Waspnest Brick and Tile Company ran the business until around 1934 when it seems that a newly formed company, The Chesterfield Brick Co (1934) Ltd took it over. Brick making ceased around the mid-1940s when the firm closed down. There must be many houses around Chesterfield built with Wasp Nest bricks. I still have a few at the bottom of my garden with the name ‘Wasp Nest’ imprinted on the side of them. I have a particular interest in the brick works because my great great grandfather, Joseph was a master brickmaker, who came from Warwickshire to Brampton with his family c. 1844-5 and for a short time lived in one of the old Wasp Nest stone cottages close to the brickworks. Two of his sons also became brick makers, who, like their father, worked at brick works in the districts. Next to the brick works quarry was the Inkerman Pool created when the former 19th century Inkerman Colliery workings were flooded with water after the colliery closed in the early 1900s. The over grown spoil heaps around the pool reminded us of the coalmining of the past. The Pool was used for swimming by the Chesterfield Swimming Club which had its own changing huts and diving board. Because of the steep sides to the Pool, some of the Brampton lads used to dive in off the top of the banks. Some of the local fishermen could also be seen trying their luck in the waters, but I never saw them catch anything!

The Pool was said to be very deep, and unfortunately a few drowning tragedies occurred. Above the Pool on the Ashgate side, was the derelict pottery building with its chimney, of the former Ashgate Pottery Co. Ltd. The pottery was particularly noted for the making of peggy pots and pancheons (a pot traditionally used to bake bread).

It is interesting to note from the O.S. maps of 1898 that, in addition to the Inkerman Colliery, there was also the Inkerman Brick Works run by the Chesterfield Brickmaking Co. Ltd., on the site of the later Ashgate Pottery. Little is known about the brickworks or the pottery, but in 1901, the Chesterfield Brickmaking Co. Ltd. went into liquidation, the brick works was closed and was probably converted for pottery making. Presumably, the coal extracted from the colliery was used at the brick works, but by 1914 the colliery had been abandoned. Soon after the war in about 1946-7, the Council built prefabricated houses on the tip and adjacent field, and extended Churston Road to Old Hall Road. Later, the brick works were demolished, the quarry filled in, the Inkerman Pool drained and filled in, and the whole site redeveloped for housing around 1969-70, including a large children’s playground and football pitch.

I confess that local government organisation might not be of huge interest to many people, perhaps because the different levels of administration and varying responsibilities are a bit of a mystery. So I was pleased to be invited by the chairman and clerk to Holymoorside and Walton Parish Council to discover how a local parish council fits into the structure. We met in Holymoorside Village Hall, a charming traditional rural community building set at the heart of the village and surrounded by well-kept grounds, including children’s play area and a large recreation field with picnic tables and bordered by the River Hipper. Sitting with chairman Martin Thacker MBE and clerk to the council, Kate Brailsford, I learned that the formation of parish councils dates back to 1894, under the Local Government Act which gave responsibility for ‘local oversight of civic duties in rural towns and villages. Today the parish council is the first tier of local government. However, only about 35% of the country’s population lives within a parish council. In the area covered by the distribution of S40 magazine, Holymoorside and Walton is the Page 50 www.s40local.co.uk

only one - representing 2000 residents. This parish is bordered by Baslow Road and Matlock Road covering the village of Holymoorside and its outlying rural community from Stonedge in the West and including part of Walton at Acorn Ridge on the East side. The majority of the Walton community, (along with the rest of our S40 coverage) is part of a two tier system, without Parish Council representation. Our representatives are ward councillors in Chesterfield Borough Council. Chesterfield Borough Council with its administration centre at Chesterfield Town Hall is the lower part of this two tier system with Derbyshire County Council being the upper tier. Martin explained “Holymoorside and Walton Parish Council is part of a three tier system – its activities are financed by middle tier North East Derbyshire District Council (NEDDC), whose administrative centre is in Saltergate, Chesterfield. NEDDC itself is under the control of upper tier authority, also from Derbyshire County Council.” “Unlike these upper tiers, Parish Councils are generally non political. As a District Councillor, representing the Brampton and Walton Ward

for the Conservative Party I do have political allegiance in that particular role. However, as a member of Holymoorside and Walton Parish Council, along with my colleagues who may have their own personal political views, these are not part of the discussions at meetings.” “We meet in the Village Hall, and all 10 councillors work together effectively in the best interests of the community we represent. The members are volunteers and receive no remuneration, the only paid position being that of the Clerk to the Council, whose busy job it is to put the decisions of the councillors into action”. Parish clerk, Kate explained the responsibilities of the council. “We have to take care of the parish property and help maintain local services, within a carefully controlled budget. Our most valuable asset is the Village Hall, which is used for a large number of local organisations for their meetings, activities and events. We arrange the hiring of the hall and rooms, and maintain on-going cleaning and repairs. We also look after the sports facilities, the tennis courts, bowling green, play area, memorial garden, allotments, parish footpaths, grit bins and bus shelters.” Martin added “We have a responsibility to oversee planning applications and act as a voice for residents. The community is kept advised of issues to be discussed and of decisions. A quarterly newsletter is delivered to every household and a comprehensive website is kept up to date”. In addition the council are responsible for a number of events that take place throughout

the year. This year as part of ‘Derbyshire Lives Through The World Wars’ an event is planned for Saturday 23 August which coincides with the Battle of Mons. An annual Parish boundary walk is also arranged - councillors and residents take part together providing a great opportunity to meet informally. “All this, together with sitting on the necessary committees, keeps the council members, and especially the clerk, pretty busy. The council strap line is ‘Promoting Parish Pride’ and we believe it is our role to preserve the rural character of the area and to reward those who make a difference. Many of the councillors have served the community conscientiously for many years. “At Harleys we arranged a series of skills workshops; a furniture Painting demonstration where we taught basic skills on how to shabby up a piece of furniture using chalk paints, crochet workshop, a make-up demonstration and worked with JJ Flowers who hosted the ‘make your own floral arrangement’, this session was held in the evening with a group of six ladies, it was very relaxed with an amazing outcome of them all taking home the wreath they made. The sessions booked up really quickly and we had some lovely comments from the people who came along, most asking ‘when’s the next one?’ One lady had studied the festival guide and was attending various taster courses and events during the festival. What we also found was people would come out early and then go to one of the cafes along the road or browse some of the other shops before arriving, so by putting on events we were also supporting surrounding businesses” I got involved with JJ Flowers as one of the Festival co-ordinators. Initially Jess at JJs flowers was unsure what to do for the festival as her studio was only small. We sat together and hatched a plan and I offered her a room to use free of charge for the evening. From this evening we are now working on doing more courses in the future. For the 2014 festival we plan to hold at least four courses and some shop offers. As one of the coordinators for the festival, if you want to discuss ideas or want to get involved but don’t know how, I’d be happy to talk to you.”

Chatsworth Road is growing, it’s attracting new businesses, some starting up and some looking to expand. Nick and Carl from Grade 1 Gents Stylists on Sheffield Road, Whittington Moor are a business expanding and have recently opened Brampton Barbers at 167-169 Chatsworth Road opposite Chatsworth Business Park. 125 Years of Chesterfield Club Cycling Chesterfield Spire Cycling Club Words and pictures courtesy of Rod Spurrier “Nobody seems to remember what happened about 1880 but it appears that the old pennyfarthing lads packed up the game, not seeing much future in a velo with equal-sized wheels” excerpt taken from ’50 Years of Cycling in Chesterfield. The Rover ‘safety bicycle’ of 1885, designed by John Kemp Starley, was one of the most popular diamond framed, chain driven bicycles. It became the template model from which evolved the recognizable modern machine. It soon drove the old ‘ordinary cycle’, better known as the ‘penny farthing’ into near obsolescence. The new design fitted with John Boyd Dunlop’s pneumatic tyres which resulted in cycling taking off in a big way. It was 125 years ago that, in 1889, The Chesterfield Cycle Club was founded, one of the first in the country. It was the start of the earliest and biggest cycling boom, when cycling for day-to-day transport, leisure and sport really took off. The Chesterfield Cycle Club soon produced a world record holding club legend, Thomas Jepson Gascoyne. For a time, in 1896, he held the mile and 25 mile records. As with many sports clubs there have been periods of growth, decline and regeneration. The club thrived and expanded and in 1911 changed its name to Chesterfield Cycling and Athletic Club, to reflect its many and varied sporting activities. Sadly, soon after, probably as a result of the Great War, the club faded, to be re-formed in 1923 with athletics being a major part of the club’s programme, one of the club’s achievements being the organization of a Derbyshire Times Road Walk. After the interval of another war, the club re-formed, yet again, in 1947, from this time through the 50’s and 60’s the club continued as a cycling and athletics club promoting a range of events from mass walks to road races. In 1969, the cycling club was re-named Chesterfield Spire Road Club. There had been an earlier Chesterfield Spire Cycling Page 60 www.s40local.co.uk

Club, which by this time was defunct. Once again, in this new guise, the club flourished. This was the heyday of some of today’s senior club members. Details of the exploits and feats of club members, bygone and present, can be found on the history page of the club’s website. Nowadays the club is a bit more relaxed with around 40 members. Interest in silver cups has been replaced by an enthusiasm for cups of tea and coffee at café stops on the regular road rides on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. These rides vary in length from 35 to 70 miles at a pace of about 10mph, the weekend ride being just a tad quicker, around 11 - 12mph. Members also get together for the occasional short holiday tour or weekend trip. New this year is a Sunday ride of 15 to 20 miles with regular rests and a pace of around 8 - 10mph. If you’re just starting out or want to get back into cycling, this is the ride for you. We are blessed to live in fine cycling country with many quiet roads to enjoy and new riders are always welcome. Check the club’s website for more details. The club is organising three open rides this year, the customary Spring and Autumn rides which follow the same course and are useful indicators of how your fitness has improved over the season. There are two ride lengths, 38 miles & 63 miles and they take place on 26th April (for the Spring rides) and 13th September (for the Autumn rides). The third ride is to celebrate the 125th Anniversary of club cycling in Chesterfield, they are running at 125 km (75 mile) ride on Saturday 14th June. This is a challenging course through the stunning Derbyshire landscape that should appeal to regular club, sportive and Audax riders, a fitting tribute to the exploits of our forebears. HELP! Brampton Rovers AFC FC

A discussion with Jon Anderson.

Brampton Rovers AFC Football Club, established in 1966, is one of the biggest amateur clubs in Derbyshire and part of the “Grassroots Partnership” with Chesterfield FC. The Club is a non-profit facility run by volunteers based on the old Newbold School playing fields, opposite the Olde House pub. This active club has over 20 teams - from under 7’s all the way through to adults. Jon Anderson, Committee member responsible for funding explained “we have 250 players across the team spectrum, who currently play in a number of different leagues including The Chad, Rowsley, Derbyshire Ladies League and Sheffield & District Junior League, the largest league in Europe. “We also run a Saturday morning development club for boys and girls from 4 years old. Over 40 children regularly attend from all ethnic and social backgrounds and we are able to offer games and coaching in a safe and friendly environment. Most of the sessions are based on FA FUNdamental principles, i.e. letting the kids have fun whilst learning. We have mixed boys and girls teams right up to under 13’s. As part of our Community Standard application we are hoping to start more girls teams in the forthcoming 2014-15 season. We have 20 qualified coaches and staff and encourage children to learn to play, but also encourage the social interaction.”

The Newbold site is 7 acres; a mixture of grass and parking and some very basic facilities. The club is keen to improve the facilities and expand to get even more people involved. But providing this safe pleasant environment requires development and some new facilities, which, of course, costs money. At the moment equipment is stored in containers, the only welfare facility is an onhire port-a-loo and hot drinks are served by a volunteer from another container, powered by a generator with water brought in by one of the helpers. “We’ve also had problems on the site with drug users and dog walkers leaving mess behind, but recently received £35,000 funding from a TV program and were able to pay for a 6ft metal fence to the perimeter which has solved that problem”. The next priority is to build a clubhouse, at a cost of approximately £230,000. John explained “we’ve been given the go ahead by DCC for a single storey clubhouse which will include male and female changing rooms, showers and a separate facility for match officials, a kitchen and toilet facilities and a meeting room. It means the clubhouse will be able to host coaching courses, community activities and host private events”.

At the moment they’re in the early stages of obtaining funding and are looking at a wide variety of potential sources.

“We met the FA recently and they are considering our funding request against other applications, they were extremely positive but we won’t have a decision from them until November. We’ve applied for £50,000 from Sport England, £20,000 from Lafarge/Tarmac, we are in the process of applying to Biffa and Veolia as we qualify for funding on the landfill scheme and as David Wilson Homes have acquired the land next to the Newbold site we will look for funding from them via Section 106.”

Community involvement and support is also key to such an ambitious project and the club are looking for your support and any help with funding large or small, or ideas you may have.

The second development they are working to progress is to remedy the poorly draining pitches - as John explained “the pitches are on a blue clay base which drains poorly. With funding we hope to re-lay the pitches so we don’t have to postpone so many matches - we weren’t able to play for 6 weeks during the recent wet weather. We have a volunteer groundsman who does a great job and spends many an hour trying to get the pitches in tip top shape, but he can only do so much with the facility as it is.”

To the rear of the ground there is an old tennis court which is used by our netball team for training, but the fencing here is poor and there is no lighting.

Garden Tips

Another peculiar winter, incredibly wet (you probably noticed!) but very mild, may have left some garden plants a bit confused. However, it’s best to stick to the things we know are done at this time of year but beware: just because it’s been mild doesn’t mean there still can’t be frosts, so check the weather forecast and take action to protect any delicate shoots and the flowers of fruit bushes and trees if necessary. 1.

Plant maincrop potatoes around mid-April, but remember that they’re frost-tender and may need some protection if the overnight temperatures threaten to drop below zero. If they’re chitted (showing good shoots) they should be vigorous enough to get themselves going as long as the tubers are below the soil.

Lots of hardy vegetables (carrots, beetroot, parsnips etc.) can now be sown direct into the soil, although that may depend on if you’ve had the chance to prepare the beds for them. If your soil is still wet (if you can pick up a handful of soil and squeeze water out of it) rather than damp, dig some sand or grit into the top few centimetres so seeds don’t sit in the water and rot. Never sow into frozen soil.

If you’re not confident about growing things from seed, there will be lots of vegetable seedlings available in garden centres. However, they will have been raised in a fairly benign environment and won’t appreciate going straight outside, especially if it’s chilly, so they need to be slowly acclimatised by being protected at night – but don’t bring them into a heated house, and if it’s sunny remove any cover during the day as otherwise they will get too hot.

Seeds for tender vegetables can be sown under cover; tomatoes, courgettes, squashes, peppers and so forth. Again, you can buy young plants from garden centres but they can be quite expensive for what you get, plus it’s far more satisfying to grow things from scratch.

Hardy annuals and herbs can now be sown outside. Some seeds store reasonably successfully for several years, but others don’t; parsley won’t keep at all, but if you let a plant set its own seed every year you’ll never be without it.

As the days warm, anything in pots will need to be watered more often, especially houseplants, which should be moved away from places where they are in direct sunlight. Start including a weak feed, increasing to full strength as new growth starts to sprout.

Finish off any garden maintenance that you haven’t got done over winter, including tying in climbing or rambling roses.

Repair any patches that have appeared in the lawn over winter by sowing seed into them; loosen the soil a bit first, then rake the surface. You may need to dig some grit or sand into the top couple of centimetres, depending on how wet it is. Protect any newly-sown areas against pigeons.

There’s not really a month when you shouldn’t be weeding, but it’s much more important now, especially as some weeds produce their seeds so early. If hoeing as a control, try to do so on warm, preferably sunny days, so the weeds and their roots dry out.

Mulching with compost is by far the best way to feed your garden, but if you can’t produce enough or haven’t got a good source, most established plants will appreciate some general fertiliser spread around above where their roots will be, and gently forked in – don’t overdo it and damage the roots themselves.
