I’ve enjoyed spending time learning about a number of businesses this month,Toad Footwear and Autoworld, to name two, and they’ve shared their stories with me. They are very different in most ways but their shared values make them have a lot in common – they are local family businesses, both doing well and both loyal to Chesterfield. Then we have the Love Your Local Market week coming up and we are encouraged to visit and perhaps revisit, in some cases, our market traders on Chesterfield market. These three unrelated articles highlight the importance of supporting local independent businesses in preference to the large chain stores and supermarkets and are working proof of the benefits they provide to our local economy and job market. I know we can’t survive without the larger players, but by making a choice to spend a small amount of our cash with the independents, we can make a massive difference. Think back to our 10% independent idea... £1 in every £10 spent away from the nationals. As a reminder - if a weekly shopping bill is £100, that’s £10 to spend locally. If the 8,200 households we deliver to do that, then we will pump £82,000 a week into the local economy! And, I’m sure the guys on the market stalls or in the small shops really appreciate you making that spending choice. So what else have we this month? We’ve got a great cover painting, sent in by one of our readers. Fortuitously it arrived in the same month as the Love Your Market Week campaign is featured (it’s not just thrown together this stuff you know!) see page 28 for details. As mentioned, we’ve articles on Toad Footwear, Autoworld and the markets, as well as Elysium, Peak Performance, St Thomas’ War Memorial, Sheffield Ski Village, U3A and Derbyshire Open Arts. This item arrived just in time... A Duck Race! More details next month, but four races will take place of little rubber ducks along the length of the stream in Somersall Park, that feeds Walton Dam. Accompanied by a bar and BBQ, in aid of the Sick Children’s Trust. Save the date Sunday 22 June! Lastly, the Tour de France, passes close by in a few weeks and it feels to me like there are loads of people out on their bikes at the moment? Right, I’m off to join them - see you in June. Paul.

It’s not the pound stores, pawn brokers and bookies that make a town centre desirable, it’s a good mix of cafes, independents and popular chain stores that give the town centre a personality, and pull in locals and visitors alike. Toad Footwear is one of our locally owned independent stores, on Stephenson’s Place just around the corner from the Crooked Spire and it’s doing well. I recently went to meet the team at Toad, I was expecting a young, vibrant team, and I got that and much more - a lesson about the problems faced by today’s small businesses and an insight into how this business has adapted, by adding an online business, to compete and stay ahead of the competition in this cut-throat market. Toad was originally established by brother and sister Drage and Fiona Thompson in 2003. Drage, a professional golfer, whose career was cut short by injury and his sister, who worked for VF Corporation, a USA clothing corporation with revenues of circa $9.5billion. “It was simply a ‘why don’t we do something together?’ discussion one day” explains Drage, “I think retail felt right for us. Our parents used to own Whites Furnishers until the 1960’s (a large Chesterfield furniture store) so we both had sales and service in our genes, you might say.” “We started Toad with the aim of offering something different, products that stood out from the crowd - brand and style being important, customer service and repeat business more so, products with a story that people can relate to” enthuses Drage. It wasn’t long before Fiona left to get married and started a family and Drage took over the business, which initially sold just women’s shoes. Drage’s fiancée, Laura, joined him at Toad eight years ago, “She put her career on hold to work full time for the business just over four years ago, after leaving university with a first class Law degree. Laura is the real driving force behind the business. She is involved with every aspect and her professionalism and attention to detail are why we are what we Page 6 www.s40local.co.uk

are. We work really well as a team and both have our own roles within the business, but it’s Laura’s eye for product that is the basis for success “ explains Drage. The business today employs seven local people and splits business 20/80 between the retail store and the online world. “It’s the internet side of the business that enables us to continue to offer the wide footwear range that we do in store” explains Drage. “A small independent store just wouldn’t get access to the range and brands we stock, the start up costs associated with the stock needed would be huge. For us it’s the strong online business and sales that gives us the buying power - the right brands are interested in us. The internet business has enabled us to secure the brands we want; our top brands include Ugg Australia, Converse, Vans, Melissa, Vivienne Westwood and many more - adding up to 1,400 lines which are available when you visit the store or online in various colours and sizes.” “We’ve grown and continued to grow through the recession” explains Laura. “Nine years ago we started offering ‘sales’ products through ebay and it was so successful that we added the full price products. We quickly realised we needed our own consumer website and set up toadfootwear.co.uk. We now also sell through Amazon as they approached us five years ago and together all three channels make up 80% of our business and we are continually looking to expand further.” “Growth can cause problems though” adds Drage. “With our inventory selling across the three online channels our IT systems were letting us down” he explained. “We didn’t have one single inventory, so we’d end up selling more products than we’d got in stock, as each online channel made sales. Mondays used to be a real headache as we often found sales had outstripped supply. We’ve invested in new systems and today things run much more smoothly.” “The online opportunities are very exciting and we now ship 25% of our online sales

worldwide, but Toad remains committed to the retail store and to Chesterfield. We reward in-store loyalty with a card that offers 10% back(*1) - the take up for this has been fantastic.” It is clear that for the guys at Toad it’s more than ‘just a job. The small team are extremely enthusiastic about what they do and their passion was evident even in the short time I spent there. Alicia is the store manager she graduated in 2013 and changed to full time immediately after working part time here for 4 years previous. Elliot and Laura Slater have both chosen careers here based on a love for the products and the excitement for growth. The part time dedicated team member Olivia balances work whilst studying for an English degree and running a successful fashion blog. “Each staff member is integral to the business and we couldn’t run it without them” adds Drage. I was really impressed, Toad’s an independent retail store that’s doing well, has stayed in Chesterfield and has seen business grow five fold through a recession. I hope Toad’s success story might inspire other people to start off down the small business road and bring further prosperity and interest to our town centre and high streets. *1Terms and conditions apply.

Autoworld Behind the scenes at Autoworld Words by Paul Chapman.

I’d always assumed Chesterfield’s Autoworld was one of a number of dealerships spread across Derbyshire, Yorkshire and the East Midlands - but apart from a recent new addition in Nottingham they are a Chesterfield based company, and locally owned to boot. I’m having a coffee with Judith Barcroft, Marketing and Communications Manager at Autoworld to find out a little more about another successful Chesterfield business. Autoworld is family owned, founded by David and Sue Priestnall, David being Chesterfield born and bred. After starting out in the motor trade David took premises in an old Cinema at Eckington in 1972, and when the lease expired 1981, moved to Whittington Moor. The original business, Autoswap, sold used cars from a single wooden building, where the Suzuki dealership resides today - at this time, prior to A61 dual carriageway, Brimington Road was the main road from Chesterfield to Sheffield. When an engineering workshop became available, David moved into this additional space and started with the first franchise; Skoda, followed shortly afterwards by a Suzuki dealership - growing to become Autoworld Motor Group with a turnover in excess of £75million. Sadly David passed away in April 2011, the funeral was held at the crooked spire the only place big enough to hold such a large crowd a fitting send off to a great entrepreneur. Susan together with both sons, Stephen and Simon, along with Tony Cordin are Directors of the Company.Tony celebrates 20 years at Autoworld in 2014. Family has always been important at Autoworld and today many of the staff have a number of generations working at the site. Tony’s daughter works in the business, Judith’s son is a salesman in Fiat, and many of the staff have relatives working in one of the many Franchises. This creates a sense of community, pride and loyalty within the business, with some core staff having worked there for over 20 years. Tony commented “along with our family members, we have some great staff working in our business with many years of Page 20 www.s40local.co.uk

experience. In November the business closed on a Sunday and we took all the staff along with their families on an action packed day to Alton Towers.”

As time progressed the site expanded and new franchises were added. Today the marques carried at Autoworld include Alfa Romeo, Abarth, Citroen, Fiat, Hyundai, Seat, Suzuki and Volvo, motorcycles available include Harley Davidson, Buell and Triumph plus Vanworld selling both new and used commercial vehicles.

I asked how things were with sales, “March sales totalled over 1,000 vehicles” answered Judith, “commercial sales are 30% up on this time last year. I always think this is a good indicator of the economy, sole traders don’t swap their van unless they can see a good future, so right now things look very positive.”

Most recently the state of the art Service Centre was added, behind which there are 22 service bays and six pre-delivery inspection (PDI) bays. Autoworld employs 240 people and approximately another 100 people indirectly associated with the business “the majority of whom live locally in Chesterfield” adds Judith.

The only Autoworld business outside Chesterfield is the Harley Davidson franchise in Nottingham, “this wasn’t a planned addition, we were approached by Harley Davidson who wanted us to take on this site” explains Judith. I walked around the site with Judith, taking a look at each of the showrooms. What struck me was the difference between the brands, it’s as if they’ve been purposely selected to provide a wide choice of brands and models, the trendy Fiat 500 tailorable in so many ways, the Volvo XC90 for towing the caravan, the

Autoworld pride themselves on their strong focus on customer service. “We are measured and marked by our customer feedback” explained Judith. “This feedback isn’t just important for helping us to improve, it sets the level of discounts suppliers offer us, which we pass through to customers. Car dealers have a stereotypical image, we work hard to change this and our feedback suggests we’re getting it right.” We chatted about Autoworld’s involvement in the community - they support vehicles for Ashgate Hospice, Kids n Cancer and Chesterfield Football Clubs, sponsor the Dronfield 10k and more recently became the sponsor of Matlock Town FC’s ground and the Autoworld Lounge, MD, Tony Cordin being a big supporter of local Charities and sporting clubs. In addition Autoworld are Derbyshire Trusted Traders and proud to be Chesterfield Champions.

“Alongside the corporate sponsorships we’re really proud of our staff who are always raising money for charities. The Three Towers Challenge; Blackpool, London and Paris raised £35,000 for Kids n Cancer, we’ve supported Brake, the Road Safety charity, and we run a Christmas Toy appeal where we donate to local good causes such as the Women’s Refuge and Chesterfield Royal. We had customers delivering items to donate, straight from Toysrus and brand new bikes from Halfords - this really was one of the best things we’ve done” adds Judith. So, after the whistle stop tour, returning to the office to collect my stuff I realised that yet again, I’d been pleasantly surprised by Autoworld. I’d met another successful local business, making a really positive contribution to Chesterfield through employment opportunities and charity involvement. All good stuff I thought. Gladiator is one of owner, Richard Clarke’s, favourite films but luckily for us Elysium is alive and well - in fact it’s five years old and has recently been refurbished. “I’ve been in the hairdressing trade for 25 years this year” explains Richard, “and this is my first venture on my own.” Situated on the corner of Chatsworth Road and Old Hall Road, the salon is busy, yet relaxing, “we like to think it’s a friendly place” says Richard, “we welcome people with a complimentary drink; hot drinks and beer or wine. Recently named the best UK small indoor market by the British Market Authorities, and with the national ‘Love Your Local Market’ week coming up, there’s never been a better time reacquaint yourself with Chesterfield market. If you’re thinking of starting up in retail or want to try a new outlet for your products from Monday 19 May to Saturday 24 May Chesterfield Borough Council are offering new traders a stall on Chesterfield Market from £10 per day on the Monday, Friday or Saturday. They will then qualify for a further four stalls at the reduced rate of £10 each*. Andy Bond from Chesterfield Borough Council’s Regeneration Team explained “it’s the third year the campaign has run. Last year we had 20 new stall holders come and give it and try, four of whom stayed on. One of those, James Parkin came to sell cake decorations and now regularly stands on a Friday, Danny Lowe, who prints and sells T Shirts still stands about once a month. For Sarah Romano it was more about testing out whether she had a product idea that worked. She brought her bespoke party wear and young fashion and stayed with the market for 10 months before moving on to sell through different outlets. The campaign is really about encouraging local entrepreneurs to experience the market environment, test a business model and either take on a regular stall or move elsewhere.” Starting any new business can be daunting, but the markets committee really want new people to succeed, so are on hand to offer help and advice on setting up the stall, which warehouses to visit, where to go for rails, pegs, bags etc… Experienced market traders such as Nick Ibbotson from Ibbotson’s Fruit and Veg, Brian Towndrow from Derbyshire Workwear and Paul Hind from Top Cards are also offering their help and support by welcoming and mentoring newcomers. But it’s not just about traders, it’s about encouraging everyone to experience market shopping, supporting the stalls and the traders, it’s an exciting lively place to shop, with the hustle, bustle and banter. And although we’ve not mentioned it for some time, it pumps money more directly into the local economy – supporting people who live and work in Chesterfield (10% independent!). The Mayor and Mayoress of Chesterfield will open the event at 10.30am on Monday 19 May. There will be entertainment, competitions and prizes throughout the week including a chance to win an iPad. So whether you’re a budding market trader, a loyal market shopper or someone who hasn’t visited the market for a while, why not come along and celebrate what Chesterfield Market has to offer.

Meet the cast of

The Wizard of Oz The latest production by Peak Youth Words and photos by Mike Spriggs

Peak Youth, under the direction of Mike Spriggs, have chosen to perform the Wizard of Oz at the Pomegranate Theatre during the first week of June. “The show contains many memorable songs, great characters and has something to suit all tastes” explains Mike. Following his acclaimed performance as Fagin in last year’s show, Josh Holmes takes the part of the Scarecrow with Kai Jackson playing the Tin Man and Sam Hall the cowardly Lion. The part of Dorothy, the show’s heroine, is taken by Darcy Thorpe whose delightful voice is shown to its best with her rendition of the highlight piece, ‘Somewhere over the rainbow’. Lewis McPhilbin plays the part of Lord Growlie and both he and Darcy are in Peak Performance’s production of South Pacific at the Pomegranate the previous week. Melissa Shaw plays the part of the Wicked Witch with Sam’s sister, Jess Hall taking the part of the Good Witch. With a cast of over 50 the show promises to be a spectacular production and contains three specialist ballet scenes choreographed by Kay Gilbert with her delightful Munchkins. A full Orchestra is under the direction of Ian Batley and with lavish costumes and stunning sets the show promises to be one to remember. Based on the popular L. Frank Baum stories, Dorothy is caught in the path of a tornado and somehow ends up in the Land of Oz. Here she meets some memorable friends and foes in her journey to meet the Wizard of Oz who everyone says can help her return home and possibly grant her new friends their wishes for a brain, heart and courage. War Memorial

Words by Val Woollven Pictures by Graham Woollven I have always been interested in War Memorials. Some of them celebrate name, rank, regiment and honours, others just solemly name the dead. Most places have one memorial and many of the family names recorded there can be found on current gravestones. Places without War Memorials are called ‘Thankful Villages’. The War Memorial at St Thomas’ in Brampton is unusual. Featured on the top is a swastika, not an emblem that you would associate with a structure designed and built to honour the dead of the Great War. I was intrigued. The memorial was commemorated by the Duke of Devonshire in 1921. It was his first official visit since his return from Canada where he had been Governor General. Two hundred and thirteen service men sacrificed their lives in ‘the great cause of freedom, justice and truth’ reported the Derbyshire Times on September 24th.There was a large crowd numbering thousands including relatives of the dead soldiers. There was a procession led by Chief Constable Kilpatrick and the Borough Police together with The Old Comrades Band. Three sergeants and a corporal of the local Territorial Battalion of the Sherwood Foresters, with heads bowed and reversed arms, formed a guard round the base of the memorial. The Duke, who was a former Mayor of Chesterfield, wore his service uniform as Lord Lieutenant. He was accompanied by Colonel H Brooke Taylor of Bakewell. Did the swastika offend any of them at all? A swastika wouldn’t have offended anyone in 1921. It is an ancient Tantric symbol from the Sanskrit word ‘svastika’. Broken down, ‘sv’ means ‘good, auspicious’, ‘asti’ means ‘it is’ and ‘ka’ is a diminutive suffix. Put together, swastika means ‘it is good’. It is common practice for Hindus to paint swastikas on their doors during certain festivals. The swastika arms can turn in either direction as according to Hindus this gives balance to life. It became a popular good luck symbol in Western Culture and was first attested in the English language in 1871. Rudyard Kipling chose to have a swastika printed on the fly leaf of some of his books to signify his affinity with India. It was a well known good luck charm for early aviators. The National War Savings Committee used it on Savings Stamps during the Great War. There is a swastika on the John Ruskin memorial in Cumbria.

The swastika was adopted by the Nazi Party in 1920 as a symbol of the Aryan Race but it wasn’t until 1932 that it was referred to as a Nazi emblem. It was chosen as a conveniently geometric and eye catching symbol. The Nazi use has corrupted its meaning and it is now regarded as a sign of hatred, yet the symbol will always have sacred and historical status in many cultures. After the second world war the Dean and Chapter refused to dig up the swastika patterned tiles on the floor of Hereford Cathedral for this very reason. So why put a swastika on a war memorial? A swastika cannot be regarded as a good luck symbol in this context. A book in the local studies section of Chesterfield Library lists the names of soldiers from the Sherwood Foresters who died in the Great War, compiled with information taken from the Official Casualty Lists. The book is 106 pages long and has approximately 100 names on every page. Surely this many deaths cannot be seen as auspicious or lucky, even in victory? There may be an explanation. I discovered that when Christians use the swastika in a ‘hooked’ version, it becomes the symbol of God’s victory over death. There are both left and right facing swastikas on the war memorial at the entrance to Balmoral castle, the St Thomas’ War Memorial is in good company.

Ed. On contact with the church we were told the question of the ‘‘swastika’ has proved debatable over many years. In December 1941, the then Rector of St Thomas’, the Revd. Hubert Sillitoe, wrote a letter in the Parish Magazine, stating “I am constantly asked why the German Swastika is on our War Memorial! It is not! I have referred to this a number of times in the pulpit. I now hope the ‘ocular demonstration’ of these illustrations will set the matter at rest” Mr Sillitoe describes the cross at the top of St Thomas’ War Memorial as a symbol of the ‘Nailed Cross’. He goes on to give further details about the traditions concerning the ‘nailed cross’ and states it is a Christian symbol which signifies victory through suffering . “The swastika and the nailed cross are both heraldic charges and have considerable, at first sight, similarity, but they are most emphatically NOT the same thing!”

Ski Village Press Release

Slightly outside the S40 area, Sheffield Ski Village, ravaged by arsonists and closed for over a year – is now the focus of a committed project to bring it back to glory. We wanted to feature this for a number of reasons. Firstly, to have world-class snowsport facilities so close to Chesterfield would be extremely positive for people in the area, and secondly, when I saw this featured on Look North, the spokesperson was Victoria Crampton, personal trainer, who previously advertised with us, so I felt compelled to learn more. It was poignant to many in Sheffield, that whilst Team GB celebrated winning its first ever Olympic medal on the snow at Sochi, the former training home for many of the freestyle snowsport athletes lay in ruins. Freestyle stars such as James Woods, James Machon, and Katie Summerhayes of Team GB had invaluable access to the Sheffield Ski Village during their formative years. They progressed from the nursery slopes and with hard work, forged inside this supportive infrastructure, became Olympic athletes. This is why community group ‘Snowsport for Sheffield’ have started early discussions with a range of investors, designers and funding authorities to rebuild Sheffield Ski Village and inspire the next generation of skiers and snowboarders. Victoria Crampton, now Snowsport England Development Officer explained, “Snowsport Sheffield is a working group of professional individuals with a clear Page 38 www.s40local.co.uk

passion to see Sheffield reborn. The success of team GB at the Olympic and Paralympic games in Sochi has driven a phenomenal surge in interest to Snowsports and in particular the outdoor slopes here in the UK - an extremely positive and exciting time for the sport.” The group has ambitious plans to develop a new world class facility for snowsport activities, to firmly put Sheffield back on the map as a centre of snowsport excellence. The Ski Village, which has remained closed for over a year, has fallen victim to arson attacks. The owner of the 16.5 acre site has now applied for planning permission to build 70 houses on it. Snowsport believe that a site with such a strong sporting history should be re-invested in and brought back to life. The group of likeminded individuals are passionate about building upon the success and medals won at the Sochi Olympics and giving people from across the UK the opportunity to try winter sports for the first time. The key objectives are: 1. Re-establish Sheffield as the Snowsport Centre for the UK. 2. Create a platform for the next generation of Olympic hopefuls by encouraging talent and making snowsport accessible to all. 3. Establish the UK’s first multi-sport freestyle training facility. 4. Cement Sheffield’s place as the ‘City of Sport’ by

The team has the background, experience and contacts within the winter sports industry to realise this vision, however they face an immense task to bring a world class sporting facility like the Ski Village back to Sheffield.

Words by Elaine Kirk U3A stands for The University of the Third Age, but it isn’t a conventional university. Third Age refers to those who are retired or semi-retired. It is an organisation designed to give people in their third age the opportunity to meet socially as well as learn and share knowledge. You don’t need qualifications to join and no degree can be gained. Pam Smiley moved to Chesterfield from the South West to be closer to family and joined the writing and discussion groups of the U3A. She says, ‘It beats watching television! U3A groups are full of real characters with a wealth of living under their belt. They are all willing to share and pass on their skills. It’s much better than the Open University as it keeps the brain active in an atmosphere of camaraderie.’ To join the Chesterfield branch of the U3A, the annual subscription is £21 for a couple and £14 for one person. This enables you to attend open and social meetings (which take place regularly throughout the year) and choose from over 90 groups which are led by members of the branch. There are outdoor groups for those interested in walking, bird watching, nature and local history. Other groups meet locally or in member’s houses and include a wide range of subjects including wine appreciation, theatre trips, philosophy, history, languages, sports, crafts, and more. Some activities are open to all members, like trips to interesting venues or Christmas shopping together in a city centre. There are some overseas excursions including visits to Chesterfield’s twin town of Darmstadt and walking holidays abroad. Chesterfield is one of the older U3As in the UK and will be celebrating its 20th birthday in November 2014. It started with just 29 members and now has nearly 900, growing at the rate of nearly 100 a year. A local newsletter keeps the members up to date and the national newsletter

This spring bank holiday sees the ninth Derbyshire Open Arts weekend, with over 200 artists exhibiting either in their own studio, or clustered in some wonderful public spaces, in idyllic rural settings or in our historical towns.

In the S40 area this year, we have 22 artists, most clustering in two venues in Holymoorside including local talent: Denise Phelps and Ashoka Sen. Two other artists exhibiting are members of the DOArts committee: Olinda Everett, a ceramics artist, is event secretary and has exhibited in Holymoorside for several years. “The most important consideration in organising Holymoorside venues is to maintain a good atmosphere for artists and provide visitors with a welcome they will remember; our volunteers offer refreshments and a smile and the participating exhibitors enjoy the good humour and supportive atmosphere. Being able to meet the public and chat about my work is encouraging and inspirational.” Jennie Merriman has been working on the brochure since January and is now looking forward to exhibiting her new work in mixed media on acrylic sheet. “It is always a positive experience exhibiting at Holymoorside” says Jennie, “The local community are engaged with the local arts scene and are most interested in and supportive of the Derbyshire Open Arts event that happens every year in their village. The village hall is an open, light and airy space and can draw more than a thousand visitors over a bank holiday weekend. An excellent chance to network with other artists and local people”. Derbyshire Open Arts is a not-for-profit, volunteer led organisation, solely dependent on artists’ entry fees and advertising fees. The event is free to the visiting public and DOArts publish a free fully illustrated brochure. Appealing for new volunteers, Chair Anna Krystyna says: “Present Committee members offer help and support when requested and new opinions are heard and considered with respect. There is real comradeship among us.” The committee of Derbyshire Open Arts aim to support members throughout the year through the website and social media, making their presence accessible for consultation by the community. Organising and delivering the May Bank Holiday event remains their main focus. They strive to improve year on year the reach of the event, against the ever present need for more volunteers, to do more detailed work, bring new skills and a fresh outlook. Flower Festival St Thomas’, Brampton

Afternoon Tea for Ashgate Walton Garden Fundraiser

The Derbyshire Church of England Flower Arrangers Association (CEFAA) is holding a flower festival at St Thomas’ Church from Friday 20 to Sunday 22 June.

Sarah Kenworthy is hosting a charity afternoon tea party for Ashgate Hospice in remembrance of a dear friend.

You are invited to go along to the church to see the floral displays, for a £2 entry fee (children are free). The Festival theme is ‘Countries of the Commonwealth’. The Association in Derbyshire, which has 50 members, celebrate their 25th Anniversary this year. A short history: The Church of England Flower Arrangers Association [CEFAA] was founded in 1981 in Rainhill, Liverpool. The idea was first mooted after a Flower Festival at St. Ann’s Parish Church in Rainhill. Those taking part, having enjoyed the experience wanted to find a group they could join to improve their knowledge and skills of arranging Church flowers. They approached Church House in Westminster to enquire whether they knew of any such group. The reply was “No,why don’t you do something about it?” It was on Thursday 12 March 1981 that a meeting took place to found the Association. A committee of five was formed and applications made to the Diocesan Office for consent. Solicitors prepared a constitution and charity status whilst members of St. Ann’s Church raised £716 to cover legal fees and the cost of the dye for the badge we still wear today. We have a quarterly national newsletter and hold a flower demonstration after the AGM in April and in Autumn, a demonstration and workshop, plus a summer outing to a garden or place of interest in the county.

The event is by invitation only and Sarah has had some fantastic support from the following local businesses who she wishes to thank for donating their time, support and products that they will be selling on the day of the event, being, Libby’s, Forever Vintage, Delizia Market Deli, Revintaged Interiors and Morrisons. Also the following businesses have donated fabulous raffle prizes, J J’s Flowers, Meringue, Beauty by Amanda, Union Jack Fish Bar, Princes Sports Club, Fresh Ideas Florist, Mes Amis, and The Wingerworth. The event is taking place on Saturday 3rd May where Sarah hopes everyone will enjoy the delicious afternoon tea whilst raising funds for Ashgate Hospice.

Holymoorside (HMS) Horticultural Society “It’s simply about enjoying growing plants” Peter Forrow, chairman explained. “Previously known as the Holymoorside Horticultural and Produce Society, we dropped the ‘produce’ tag some time ago, and now cover all aspects of growing”. Many members have allotments along Chander Hill Lane and there is an adjoining group which focuses on growing fruit and vegetables who meet on the 3rd Tuesday of the month in the Village Hall. If you visit the Harrogate Spring Flower show you’ll soon realise a daffodil is not just a daffodil, there can be vast differences, and for some it’s these intricacies that give them the real buzz. But Peter was keen to reassure me that although their society enjoys healthy competition “it’s a community club, not an elitist, secretive society of old”. With two national exhibitors in their midst, the club certainly has members you can learn from - Peter specialises in Gladioli and travels across the country exhibiting at shows. At the last Southport Flower Show out of 12 gladioli classes being judged, Peter won 10 of them. Another society member, Andy Hubbuck, specialises as an exhibitor of Sweet Peas and he encourages other top exhibitors to come to the village show. “We hold ten meetings a year, with presentations or practical sessions where we learn from experts and each other. The events are listed in the S40 Local ‘What’s on’ calendar if you’d like to find out more. These are followed by a social event - tea and coffee and a chance to chat.” “We hold three annual shows, we started with a Rose and Sweet Pea show in the summer” explains Peter, “added in the 70s was our Autumn Show and our Spring Show came along in ‘80s. “The shows give members the opportunity to show seasonal flowers, it’s about having fun not about just about winning. We put on the shows at the Village Hall, the entries are judged awards handed out to winners, and local people invited to come along and see what we’ve produced.” “We also run trips, last year we went to Harlow Carr at Harrogate, the Royal Horticultural Society Garden, which was a great day out. This year’s trip is to Cambridge Botanic Garden on Sunday 3rd August.” Page 54 www.s40local.co.uk

“Today we have 50 members of all abilities, and about 20 to 25 regularly attend the Wednesday night meetings” explains Peter. Children are not left out at Holymoorside, the Spring show has a section for children, with prizes for; arrangements of Spring flowers, a plate of three buns or a cake (HMS bake-off here we come) and for a decorated egg. “We encourage children to take part in the shows and would love to see more entries” adds Peter. Pick up a show schedule from the village store for more details. Over the past years many horticultural shows have closed their doors, Tupton, Tibshelf and Staveley for instance, whereas Holymoorside is surviving well. Peter explained “I joined when I moved to Holymoorside in 1972 and wanted to get a bit more involved in village life. My home is on sloping ground, I wanted to make the most of the available garden space and felt I needed to know more. The HMS Horticultural Society was just the right place to learn.” “I started attending meetings and am now chairman of today’s group, I was secretary for many years taking up that role in 1975. “For me, gardening is an obsession! It’s about escapism and a release from the stress of everyday living. Time spent producing plants is so rewarding, the final produce and the sense of fellowship gained through the group with other like-minded people is great.” “When you walk round HMS village there are many who clearly take pride in their gardens, it would be fantastic to see some of these talented people at our meetings.” And there are allotments available today. “In the late ‘70s obtaining allotments was very difficult, it really was a case of dead man’s shoes, having to wait for members to pass away before you could get a plot of your own. With today’s emphasis on home grown it can be rewarding, but it does, of course, take a lot of effort to keep an allotment in good condition” says Peter. Garden Tips

Garden Things Words by Colin Harrison Being in the garden on a sunny May day has to be one of life’s best experiences; the sun has real warmth and all around plants are shooting up. But a cautionary note: it’s still possible for there to be overnight frosts, especially in more exposed areas. So be cautious about putting out anything tender, or be prepared with some improvised shelter; it won’t need to be particularly robust as any frost will be light. The upside is that frost will only happen if the sky is clear, which makes for wonderful mornings. 1. If any of your spring flowering bulbs looked a bit congested, now is the time to dig them up and thin them out, which will produce much better displays for the next few years. 2. Thin out raspberry shoots and prune gooseberries. As always, the idea with this sort of job is make an open framework with an even distribution of fruiting stems all getting a good supply of sunlight and air (often easier said than done). 3. Lots of more tender vegetables can be sown now: french and runner beans, cucumbers, pumpkins (and squashes) as well as cauliflower and purple sprouting broccoli for harvesting in winter they like a long growing season. 4. Later in the month, plant out summer bedding plants. Lots of these are available from garden centres, but they tend to display them rather earlier than they are sensibly planted out, so, if tempted, keep them in a shady place (protected from frost) and well watered until they can go into the open garden. 5. If you’ve already sown tomatoes and courgettes inside, they can now go outside. As upright (cordon) tomatoes grow, keep an eye open for any side-shoots that form in the angle between the main stem and branches and remove them. Seeds for both can now be planted directly outside towards the end of the month. 6. If you’re growing potatoes, earth them up by pulling surrounding soil up around the stems as they grow – this is to prevent tubers forming above ground and going green, which is poisonous. 7. Support peas with pea sticks, and prepare supports for any other plants (e.g. runner beans) that need them. 8. In terms of routine maintenance, lawns should now need regular mowing (use the clippings as a mulch), and keep on top of the weeding. Hedges will need clipping, but check for birds’ nests first, and if you’ve been feeding the birds in the winter, don’t stop – current thinking is that you should do it all year round. 9. Greenhouses will need their vents and doors opened; at this time of year, even a little hazy sunshine will quickly heat them up. 10. Keep sowing salad crops (radishes, spring onions, lettuce etc.) and herbs for regular harvesting.
