Intro Hi
Hope this S40 finds you well and enjoying the summer! I’m sure many of you were affected by the disruption to the broadband and phones lines at the beginning of the month - a nightmare for those of us who run businesses from home and a real wake-up call as to how dependent we are on these technologies for so much of what we do. I couldn’t even tell my supplier that we had a problem without access to technology how do you find a phone number or any contact details? Fortunately it now seems to be resolved and with intermittent access I was able to make a start, albeit a slow one to getting this edition together. There’s a couple of things coming up that are consuming my thoughts at the moment, one is the forthcoming excitement about the Grand Départ and the Tour de France... I’m sure some of you have (or maybe had) the same excitement about the World Cup, but for me the sporting highlight is still a few weeks away. The other is the pressure of the impending Chatsworth Road Festival Guide... if you are putting on an event for the festival we can only promote it if we know about it. To let us know fill in a form and don’t forget to share any highlights with us so we can get other people excited about it too... Forms are available from chatsworthroadfestival.wordpress.com It was great to see so many people at the Duck Race at Walton Dam (Sunday 22 June) enjoying the sunshine and meeting up with friends. As we went to print Laura Leverton from the Sick Children’s Trust tells me they raised well over £1000, although they were still counting, and would like to pass her thanks on to everyone for their support. Lastly thanks again to Nicola Harris for the cover photograph of the Chesterfield Canal Trust’s boat the John Varley (see article on page 4). Hope you enjoy this month’s S40 Local. Paul.

8 MILES The Recent History of the Chesterfield Canal. Words by Paul Chapman. Pictures by Chesterfield Canal Trust and John Lower.
8 miles... is all that remains to be restored to link the land locked Chesterfield Canal back to the River Trent. “Chesterfield Canal opened in 1777 providing access to Chesterfield and Staveley works from the River Trent to the East enabling goods and fuels to be brought into the area,” explains Rod. “It featured ‘Norwood tunnel’ a 1.75 mile long straight tunnel, dug by hand, with a view from one end to the other. The tunnel was built to obscure the canal from the view of the Duke of Leeds, but much of the tunnel was just 20’ below the surface, so ground movement and the effects of shallow ground forces gave it a tendency to spring open. “It thrived until 1907 when a major collapse closed the tunnel for the last time and cut Chesterfield off from the rest of the UK canal network.” It is this collapsed tunnel that forms part of the final 8 mile section. East of the tunnel to the River Trent there were 46 locks and 31 miles of water out to West Stockwith, near Gainsborough, whilst the cut-off stretch, west of the tunnel and backwards to Chesterfield stood 13 miles of dead canal. The section from Worksop to the Trent continued to be used by the collieries, whilst the Chesterfield side fell into decline and in 1956 the last commercial load moved along the canal.
the stretch from Worksop to Kiveton Park as remaindered (disused) waterway. Beyond the Norwood Tunnel, to the West, the Act does not appear to mention the Derbyshire section of the canal.” In the late seventies a small group, called the Chesterfield Canal Society, formed with the intention of restoring the canal. The first five to ten years were spent ensuring it didn’t decay any further but without any major restoration, there simply wasn’t the funding or manpower. In 1989 restoration started at Tapton Lock, “it was totally voluntary, the Society volunteers had no support, and we even had to undertake some of the work at night so as not to draw attention to what they were doing” says Rod. “It took about 18 months to complete and after the opening of the lock in 1990, support began to grow more rapidly. To put into perspective the amount that has been achieved you need to study the images opposite and over leaf. They are views of the same stretches of canal, and it’s only by swapping between them that you can see the scale of the work. If you couple this with the knowledge that the work was carried out by a group of dedicated volunteers and that they even rebuilt the bridge, the achievement is astounding! I met Rod Auton of the Chesterfield Canal Trust at Hollingwood Lock to understand more about the Chesterfield Canal Trust.
“Further decline resulted in a threat to close the whole canal. This threat was lifted in
The work was extremely hard going, the locks were all full of rubble and concreted
1968 following vigorous campaigning by the Retford and Worksop Boat Club. The 1968 Transport Act stipulated that the 26 miles between West Stockwith and Worksop would be designated as a Cruiseway and
over. “Hollingwood lock was a great example of how bad things were” explains Rod. The estimate was six weeks to dig it out. It actually took 18 months because it was reinforced concrete.
Page 4 www.s40local.co.uk
Dixon’s Lock had been swept away by opencast mining, so the volunteers built a brand new lock from scratch.” After an immense amount of effort and determination and even moving bridges, the length between Tapton and Mill Green was fully cleared, restored and reopened in 2002. In 1996 the Morse Lock in Worksop was opened and then slowly, one by one the remaining locks were opened and the canal began to grow in length.
Pictures: Hollingwood Lock (above - picture courtesy of John Lower) being dug out in 1991 and as it looks today... it’s not always full of canoeists though!
At Turnerwood and Thorpe Flight there is a run of 23 locks which were all restored in one go and opened in 2003. In 22 years, 36 locks, 11 major road bridges and two Marinas have been restored and brought back to life. There remains just eight miles left, some sections of which are restored but form a series of ponds which need connecting. The canal enjoys an ancient right to provide water to Staveley Works. An issue faced by the Canal Trust is a small one of the High Speed 2 (HS2) rail link that is destined to run on top of the canal for an 800m stretch at Renishaw and 1200m at Killamarsh, plus has a depot planned at Hollingwood and cuts the canal in three places which would render it impassable. However all is not lost.
Please mention S40 Local · Page 5
Article The Canal Trust has met with members from the HS2 project and they are working to hopefully accommodate the canal in its plans. “HS2 can contribute financially to community schemes like we’re trying to achieve here at the canal” explains Rod. “It may be that they can help us complete the restoration, which is great for us and for the HS2 project as it has quick positive results it can demonstrate in the business plan. The benefits being achieved much quicker than if waiting for a forest of new trees to grow; we can have people cycling along the tow paths and get boats on the water very quickly.” I was extremely impressed with the results of The Trust’s work. I’ve ridden the length of the Chesterfield Canal on the way to Rother Valley and it has never struck me that it hasn’t always been like this, testament to the work The Trust has been doing. So, who are you and why do you do it? “The trust has 1400 members with about 250 active members. We have an exhibition trailer that we take to shows and display at every opportunity, we find people are very supportive of what we are doing and are often surprised by what we have achieved.” Hearing Rod talk, his passion was clear of his passion, he has been a trust member for 20 years and, once retired, started doing office work for The Trust. From here his involvement grew - he now runs the Hollingwood Hub. “The Hub is a completely new building, funded from Community assets, a Government fund of money secured from convicted criminals and fed back into community projects. A grant was secured for £380k to restore and extend the lock house.” It was clearly money well spent, as I talked to Rod a group of people at the table next to us commented about the area and its important industrial heritage. They were originally from the area and had travelled from Portsmouth to revisit childhood memories and sites they knew and where some had worked. Staveley works, Barrow Hill, the Canal, all important sites with history worth maintaining and celebrating. Page 6 www.s40local.co.uk
Hollingwood Hub is a good news story in itself, a home for the trust and a busy café, run by Dawn Siddons. “On the first day it opened, Dawn was approached by a young girl seeking work. Dawn took her on, and now, after gaining qualifications at college she manages the coffee shop at Shireoaks, which Dawn had closed to enable her to run Nona’s at the Hub”. “We encourage community involvement“ adds Rod. “Eckington school wanted to restore a boat, which wasn’t deemed financially viable, so we advised them on the purchase of a new shell and they have completed the build. We’re hoping to run the Eckington school boat on Saturdays from Hollingwood Hub and will continue to run the John Varley on Sundays from Tapton Lock. It’s great to have the youngsters on board, running the boat and supporting the restoration projects.” If you’ve not visited the Hub, the Staveley Basin or Tapton Lock they’re all well worth a trip. With parking at Hollingwood, Mill Green and Tapton, access is good and there are lots of activities and trips along the canal at weekends – including a recent festival in June. The Trust has opened up the canal providing access to Rother Valley and people are now able to access sections of the canal for walks and recreation. At Christmas, Santa trips take place which last year attracted almost 2000 visitors. The Trust’s boat the John Varley was launched in 1992, Dave Jackman has done virtually every trip, Des Drury is the regular skipper and Ron Doman is there ever week helping on board. The boat is available for charter trips, scout groups, etc and even played part in a wedding recently. Fishing is available along the length of the canal, with permits available from Tapton Lock or Barrow Hill Fishing Club. Kingfishers and water voles can be spotted up-stream from Tapton Lock with a wide variety of wildlife to see. Call in for a coffee at Hollingwood and don’t forget to tell them S40 Local sent you.

Chatsworth Road Festival 4th to 12th October 2014 ‘Tempus Fugit’ or ‘Time Flies’ as my fatherin-law says! As I write, planning for the 2014 Chatsworth Road Festival is well underway. There are only a few weeks left to send details of your event to the Chatsworth Road Festival Group so we can include it in the Festival Guide. So if you haven’t done so already please go to www.chatsworthroadfestival. wordpress.com, fill in a form and either email it to chatsworthroadfestival@gmail.com or drop it in to Created Gallery. The Festival, now into its fourth year, promises to be the biggest and busiest yet. More businesses than ever are planning events and it looks like being an exciting week with something for everyone. As always we need you all to get involved: attend an event, listen to a busker, take advantage of an offer in a local store - the choice is yours - but please do get involved. We can’t do it without you. We need more Buskers and Bunting Makers! Can you help? If so let us know. Details for the bunting challenge are below and opposite, along with details of the Archaeological Dig that will be taking place throughout the week... who knows what they’ll unearth!
Summer Holiday: BUNTING CHALLENGE! Two Knit and Natter groups on Chatsworth Road are joining forces for the Festival to create ‘Community Bunting’, starting at St Thomas’ Church, reaching as far as the Image and Colour Emporium - and beyond… BUT they need YOUR help!
Page 24 www.s40local.co.uk
Could you encourage your family, school, church, community group or business to cut out and decorate one (or more) piece of bunting? Guidelines and measurements are below, and provided you supply your contribution no later than 12th September, the two Knit and Natter groups will attach them in to 3 metre lengths to brighten up Chatsworth Road during Festival week. If you want to set to and make complete 3 metre lengths, please follow the guidelines or get in touch for more details.
GUIDELINES Material Measurements: Width across the top is 210mm (or 8.25”) and the height to the tip is 297mm (11.7”)... or the same as a sheet of A4 paper from corners to opposite centre. Colour: Predominantly green (in particular green base colour fabric) Decoration: Be individual and imaginative! Specifics: Please leave the top 3 cms (shorter side) with no decoration, for the tape to be sewn on. Date for return: ASAP, or 12th September latest. Place for Return: Either Tracy Oldfield at Image and Colour Emporium, or Jane Simmonds at St Thomas’ Church Centre Reception. Any questions, please contact Tracy 07526 455 410 or Jane 07974 831 274.
Chatsworth Road Festival 2014 Community Archaeology project As part of this year’s Chatsworth Road Festival we will be hosting a Community Archaeology project to encourage people to get involved in their local heritage. This is your chance to get involved in our very own Brampton dig. Get your hands dirty digging, sieving and washing the objects we find. If you prefer to keep your hands clean get involved by talking about the dig to onlookers or lend a hand with various logistical tasks. Come and watch as the excavations progress. Who knows what we will dig up! The project, led by local community archaeologists from MBArchaeology,
will involve fieldwork at Brampton school on Schoolboard Lane, The Peacock on Chatsworth Road, and residents’ gardens, as well as indoor activities, special activities for children and a celebration talk for the wider public to showcase our work. If you would like to take part in this project, please register your interest by emailing chatsworthroadfestival@gmail.com or calling Created Gallery 01246 232205. The project is generously supported by Chesterfield Borough Council and the Community Assemblies through the Community Chest fund.

Libby’s Chocolate by Royal Appointment Words by Nicola Chapman Libby’s at 479 Chatsworth Road, famed for eclectic unique gifts, cards, jewellery, scarves and antiques, is bringing something extra special to Chatsworth Road: A new and exclusive range of chocolates, hand-made by Barry Colenso, the master chocolatier who designed and crafted the chocolate leaves and flowers for the chocolate biscuit Royal Wedding cake of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Barry has an impressive CV: Head Patissier at the Savoy in London and commissions by the Royal Family including the Queen Mother’s 85th birthday cake, and a cake for the Queen. But it was his love of chocolate that brought him to Derbyshire to be Master Chocolatier at Thornton’s, before setting up his own successful business in 2007. Libby met Barry’s wife Lucy quite by chance at an event. “I was walking past and was given a ‘Salted Caramel Chocolate to taste” Libby explained. “I took it without too much thought, and as I started walking away, took a bite. It was amazing. I turned on my heel and exclaimed to Lucy - these are awesome!”. Libby and Lucy developed a friendship and after much arm twisting Lucy and Barry agreed to supply chocolates to retail at Libby’s. Libby explained “Barry doesn’t retail his chocolates so I am thrilled he agreed to produce a range for me to sell in the shop... they really do need to be tasted to be believed”. To launch the range Libby hosted a chocolate tasting evening in June, where Barry took people on a chocolate journey of discovery.
Starting with Mojito cocktails with lime to cleanse the palate, what better excuse can there be? A journey from milk chocolate through to 85% dark chocolate with a grand finale of a Crème de Cacao cocktail and a slice of Barry’s special chocolate patisserie! A heavenly night of pure pleasure and indulgence! There are plans to host further chocolate tasting evenings. If you’re interested you can register with Libby or keep an eye out for the next date on the blackboard in the shop! To ensure Libby was on the right tracks, Libby and Lucy trekked off to London to sample the competition. “After spending a hard day sampling chocolates in Harrods, Selfridges and Fortnum and Mason, some chocolates as expensive as £2.50 each, I couldn’t find anything to beat Barry’s Salted Caramels. I knew the royals had it right. If they’re good enough for Kate and Wills...” In the meantime you can sample the chocolates in the shop either as a treat for yourself or as a sure fire winning gift. The range of delightful chocolates includes salted Caramels, Raspberry Champagne Truffles, Orange Liqueur Truffles, Gazzillionnaires Shortbread, Brandy Truffles, Dark Chocolate Coffee Beans and Dark Chocolate Gingers. Libby also has boxed assorted truffles and bags of chocolate buttons in various flavours for children. If you talk to Libby she can ask Barry if he will undertake your commission for a special occasion.

Tour de France The Tour de France hits Derbyshire for one day on 6th July, before finishing in Sheffield. Recently I was in the Yorkshire Dales and the way they’ve embraced the event is staggering, hand knitted bunting everywhere, yellow bike trails, painted buildings and every village green and cricket pitch is converted to a camp site for the weekend. The route finishes at Don Valley Bowl on 6th July at approximately 4pm and this provides a great opportunity to see the finish. The site will boast a whole host of events including a big screen and cycling activities. As the route passes from Langsett to High Bradfield there are plenty of places to see the racers on the road, but you’ll need to be there early as there is no parking along the route. Temporary car parks are being set up but it could involve a 3 or 4 mile walk to key spots, plus roads may be closed for eight hours on race day. Coronation Park in Sheffield has capacity for 2,500 people, is close to the route and will be screening events. We’ll be off to Leeds on Saturday and Sheffield on Sunday in the hope of seeing the riders and soaking up the atmosphere. I for one can’t wait!

Wildlife at the Avenue
Washlands Words by The Derbyshire Wildlife Trust Photos by Stewart Abbott The Derbyshire Wildlife Trust (DWT) manages 42 nature reserves across the county, performing a role to conserve and protect our wildlife. But did you know one of the newer reserves, The Avenue Washlands, is just over 3 miles away in Wingerworth, just south of Chesterfield on the A61. And now is a great time to discover more about the reserve at the free, all-day wildlife ‘Dawn to Dusk’ extravaganza. The event, organised by the Chesterfield & NE Derbyshire Local Group, kicks off at 4:30am on Saturday 12 July with a dawn chorus walk, followed by a bird ringing demonstration, various wildlife walks (butterflies, plants, birds), and family activities such as bug hunts and pond dipping. Later there’s a bat walk, moth trapping and the day rounds off at 11pm with Star Identification. There will be plenty of activities for the children including bird box making, face painting and and refreshments will be available. The land which was previously part of The Avenue Coking Works, was once described as one of the most contaminated sites in Europe. Working with the Homes and Communities Agency, Derbyshire Wildlife Trust has helped create reed bed, ponds and other wetland habitats to develop the reserve. The Avenue, which opened in 2007, is owned by the Land Trust and managed by Derbyshire Wildlife Trust. In 2013 it was named by the Land Trust as the ‘Best Environmental Space’ among its 50 parks and open spaces, a far more positive accolade than it previously received! Today the Reserve is attracting a wide variety of wildlife including several species that are struggling elsewhere. Among these are grass snakes and water voles, although you will need both patience and some luck to spot these elusive creatures. Even if you haven’t, there’s plenty of other wildlife to enjoy during a visit. Page 34 www.s40local.co.uk
Bring a pair of binoculars and a bird identification book and take a walk along the level, surfaced path to one of the viewing screens, you might see a snipe, little grebe, mallard, black headed gull, heron, teal or tufted duck, while in the summer the reserve welcomes various warblers including willow, sedge and reed warblers and whitethroat and little ringed plover. During August and September more than 1000 swallows descend on the reed bed each night to roost as they start their journey back to Africa – also bringing the odd Hobby with them. This small falcon has long wings and a streamlined body, making it perfectly evolved for catching birds such as swallows and martins, as well as the dragonflies that are also plentiful on warm summer days - including brown and southern hawkers and common darters. Hawkers are the largest and fastest flying dragonflies – catching insects mid-air and can hover or fly backwards. Common darters are small, narrow-bodied dragonflies which are on the wing from the end of June right through to October or even November in a warm autumn. As well as the wetland habitats, a Living Bird Table has been created – a mix of wildflower seeds, sunflowers, quinoa and millet provide a source of winter food for the birds. Last autumn and winter it attracted reed buntings, yellowhammers, goldfinches and chaffinches, and around its edges, observant volunteers have discovered harvest mouse nests.
Article Visiting The Avenue Washlands: The main Reserve entrance is on Mill Lane, Wingerworth, S42 6NG. Roadside parking is available on Mill Lane, just past the houses. The Learning Centre and car park are open for groups only, by prior arrangement. For the Dawn to Dusk event, Rykneld Homes has kindly given permission for its car park to be used. If you are interested in helping out at the Reserve, weekend volunteer work parties are organised once a month by Stewart Abbott – contact him for more information on 07799 276357. More details on the “Dawn to Dusk” event are available on the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust website at www. derbyshirewildlifetrust.org.uk. Renishaw
Charity Classic Car Show Words and pictures by Paul Chapman
I really enjoyed watching Phillip Glenister hosting ‘The Love of Cars’ recently, a TV show in which six classic cars were restored back to their original state, helped by a small group of engineers before they were put up for auction the final show. Each year I aim to get along to the Renishaw Hall Charity Classic Car show and each year, either I forget or the weather is appalling. This year however things were different, the sun was shining and it was a glorious day although the ground was a little soft under foot... more about that later. Put on each year by the Chesterfield Rotary Club to raise funds for local charities, the place was buzzing when I arrived, hundreds of classic cars and bikes on display. I caught up with Geoff Mitchell from the Rotary Club of Chesterfield who was responsible for publicity. “The show was originally a fund raising event for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity” explains Geoff. “Over the years the event became too large for the fundraising team and they approached the Chesterfield Rotary Club to see if we could help. We ran the next event and it was a great success.” “The following year we took full responsibility for the event and expanded the charities to include Bluebell Wood Children’s Charity and Ashgate Hospice. The relationship we have with the team at Renishaw Hall is fantastic and the show has been running at the site now for nine years. We’re hoping this year will see total funds raised for the charities exceeding £40,000.” To add to the atmosphere and provide additional entertainment there’s musical entertainment from Directions Theatre Arts, a variety of stalls and amusements plus refreshments and a bar. Autoworld are the main sponsors of this charity event, others include:- CMC Motorcycles, PCS Motor Factors, Noble Motorsports, BRM Solicitors and Stuart Bradley Jewellers. “As an outdoor event we’re always dependent on the British weather, some years the sun shines but it has been known for owners to arrive with their roofs down and cars full of water.” The Rotary work with various classic car clubs and the event at Renishaw is one of two events. Article The second in Ashover (27 July) sees cars from all marques, dating back to the 1900s, customised classics, bikes and a range of stalls and entertainment. I’m not sure my pictures do the event justice, I was distracted by some stunning examples of my favourite cars, Minis, Austin Healeys, Ford Escorts, one or two American customs and others from the late 70s and 80s... it’s a long time since I’ve seen so much chrome and cars with character that didn’t have EU Regulations to comply with. My show car came down to a choice of two, but I ignored the classic 1970s Escort Mexico and went for a custom, a Model B Ford (previous page) owned by Marcus Backhouse from Mastin Moor. There was something about its simplicity, it looked just right, perfect colour, perfect stance, and I had to wipe a childlike ‘I want one’ look from my face as I chatted to Marcus. The work that had gone into putting this car together was clearly immense. Official winners were: Classic car: 1925 McLaughlin Buick, owned by Bob Fergusson from Eckington (opposite top right), Classic bike: 1961 500cc Triumph Tiger 100 SS owned by Lawrence Bradley of Bolsover (below left) and Classic scooter: 1965 180cc Vespa SS 180 which has been owned by Ray Copley from Killamarsh (below right). If you fancy an opportunity to see a great range of classic vehicles there’s another opportunity at the Ashover Classic Car and Bike Show which will be held once again at Rectory Fields, Ashover on Sunday 27 July from 10am. Admission is cars/bikes £5 per classic to include 2 adults. No booking for individual entries, public admission is £5 over 12s, under 12s free but must be accompanied by an adult. See www.ashoverclassics.co.uk The Ashover show has been going for three years and was resurrected after its popularity dropped, now jointly run by Matlock, Scarsdale, Clay Cross and Chesterfield Rotary Clubs. Now back to the mud! I must pass on my thanks to the 7 or 8 volunteers who pushed me free of the mud as I left... a word of advice - be careful when driving an empty rear wheel drive van onto a muddy field! www.ashoverclassics.co.uk

The Centre of Industrial England Words by Cliff Lea
At times I’m sure we’re all guilty of taking our local area for granted, so when we hear Chesterfield played host to archaeologists and historians from across the East Midlands and as far afield as London, during May, for a packed conference entitled “Chesterfield – the Centre of Industrial England”, we’re perhaps prompted to see it with fresh eyes and renewed appreciation! The visitors came to hear about the rich industrial heritage of the Brampton area and the industries, almost all of which are long gone, which played such an important part in the growth of the town. The conference was organised by NEDIAS, the North East Derbyshire Industrial Archaeology Society, who hosted the event at St Thomas’ Centre, Brampton – and incidentally who have their regular meetings there too (see What’s On for details). Following a morning of talks, the visitors were led in groups on a short walk in the Brampton area, highlighting the sites of our mills, foundries, potteries, pits, even a hat factory and chemical works, all within sight of the crooked spire. The owners of the two mills in the area, listed by English Heritage for their historical significance, opened the buildings for visitors to view inside. They were able to see the nationally important Page 46 www.s40local.co.uk
construction of Walton Bump Mill, one of the earliest buildings in the world to be fire proofed in this way. They then went on past early pottery and pit sites to view the listed Cannon Mill, the last surviving building to date back to the Smith’s iron foundry which cast cannon and ball for the Napoleonic Wars, and for the American War of Independence. Throughout the 20th century, the whole area had been owned by Robinsons. Visitors were amazed to hear that in July 1939 Robinsons had funded a works outing to London to celebrate their centenary. Eight specially chartered trains had left from Chesterfield, carrying 3,700 Robinsons staff for a capital day out – lunch was followed by a variety show headed by Tommy Trinder at the Royal Albert Hall, and dinner on the return. The conference highlighted the great importance of this area in past centuries, and was a great reminder to locals too of some of our very local rich heritage and history. NEDIAS Chairman Cliff Lea said that new members who have interest in the industrial history of the area are warmly welcome. Business News
S40 Local’s website is due a makeover, but how does a small business achieve this?
If the phrase SEO conjures up an image of SPAM emails from dodgy sounding companies and individuals, trying to sell their services, then join the club. But during a conversation with Liam Jacques of Brampton Picture Framers I started to become a bit more curious about how SEO services could help. Liam told me how he’d approached designing BramptonFraming.com and that by understanding the importance of Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) their site now sees significant traffic from search engines, and as a result how his businesses has seen a large expansion in revenue from online sales both in the UK and even worldwide. Search engine optimisation is all about improving your website in such a way that it appears higher up the Google rankings, when people do searches for the products that you offer. It’s based on a system of understanding the algorithms that Google employs for ranking websites, and these change all the time. To rank highly Google assess the currency and credibility of your content, the relevance against the search criteria etc... and the way you improve those rankings can be through website changes but also by the way your site links to other content and through paid for or promoted rankings. Google takes over 200 different factors into consideration when positioning your site in the search results pages for any given search query. Improving these areas of a website means the algorithm will rank your website higher, bringing in new customers and sales. It’s a pretty complex area and that’s why you have to pay people with expertise in this area to help you. Page 50 www.s40local.co.uk
At S40 Local we’ve been thinking about how we can provide a better online experience, both for people looking for business and services and for finding out what’s on. We also want to improve the chances of our advertisers being the people you find if you do a search for a business. So, if you’re searching for a plumber in Chesterfield, we want it to be an S40 Local plumber on the S40 Local website that you find and call. If you want to know what’s going on in the area at the weekend, we want you to be able to use S40 to find the latest events, and also give you easy access to our articles and the other elements that you use in S40 Local. Plus, if you’ve visited S40 Local online recently you might have noticed we’re having a few problems, as the software needs upgrading and keeps being hacked. We approached Liam for advice and he put us in touch with Guy Tomlinson. We were wary of approaching a professional web design and SEO service, being a small business we have limited funds available. But working with Guy we’ve explored the possibilities of what we can do within our budget and agreed a way forward for improving the online experience and our Google ranking. Guy works with Jeff, a website designer, so we’ve kicked off the first stage in the process and have just seen our first designs, it will be a little longer before you see them but watch this space. If you’re looking for support with web design, search engine optimisation and social media, you can contact SEO CoPilot on 01246 540869 or 07843 938 731.

Business News The Manor: Official Opening As the sun shone on 6 June a small group gathered at The Manor for the official opening of the refurbished building. Alexis Diouf (Chesterfield’s Mayor) and owner Craig Lynch cut the ribbon in the conservatory and brief speeches were given thanking all those involved for the hard work that’s gone into the changes. The changes bring The Manor bang up to date with an increase in the bar area, new booths along one side of the bar, repaved and updated patio and an updated play area, it’s a great place to enjoy a drink and a meal. The menu has also been updated and there’s a wide choice from quick bar snacks to Sunday Roasts. If you’ve never visited The Manor it’s certainly worth a trip.

Garden Tips
Words by Colin Harrison
There’s quite a lot to do in the garden around now, but pottering around it in summer is one of the rewards for the effort put in over the rest of the year - don’t look on it as work but as relaxation. As well as routine things like mowing the grass and weeding, here are ten other things that may be necessary (depending on what you grow). 1.
Keep watering all plants in containers (indoor and outdoor), and feed them regularly. Anything in grow-bags (especially tomatoes) are prone to problems if watered erratically, so try to have a routine; aim to keep the soil moist but not wet. Plants transpire water all the time, so don’t fall into the trap of thinking if the suns not shining plants won’t need watering – any breeze or wind will increase the amount they use.
2.
Deadhead roses, repeat flowering perennials and bedding plants; check the staking of taller ones so they don’t topple over.
3.
Prune spring flowering shrubs so they don’t get leggy; birds should have finished nesting, so you can trim hedges without disturbing them.
4.
If you have to water, do so in the evening when there will be less evaporation and the water has a chance to soak into the soil. Using a hose is more efficient as the water can be directed exactly where it is needed; giving the ground a good soaking once a week is better than a less thorough one every day, which encourages roots to form near the surface. It’s more important that fruit and vegetables are kept well watered than ornamental plants, some of which produce a better display when slightly stressed anyway.
5.
In cool or wet weather, courgettes may need hand-pollinating – and check them regularly to make sure they don’t turn into marrows, although you can leave one or two to do so if you like.
6.
While sitting relaxing in the sun, start planning for next year’s spring bulbs, so you can order them early.
7.
Take lots of pictures of the garden, especially parts which you think could be improved. That way, you’ll have a good reference to use when you come to think about moving things or buying new plants, and with digital cameras it doesn’t cost anything to take lots of pictures anyway!
8.
There will still be plenty of vegetable plantlets in garden centres, so it’s not too late to plant some for harvesting this year.
9.
Salads generally mature quite quickly, so you can sow some every week or two to provide a succession of crops – ‘little and often’ is the best way.
10. A lot of vegetables should be maturing about now; keep an eye on them, as unreliable weather may cause some to bolt (i.e. form flowers and seeds); these should be harvested before this happens, which usually renders them useless anyway. If you want to collect seeds deliberately allow a plant or two to do this.
