Intro

Welcome to the August and Summer Holiday edition. The Commonwealth Games are in full swing and, as I write, England is second in the medal table out of 22 countries with 23 golds. I thought our performance in the triathlons was particularly impressive. Finally a chance for celebration after our disappointment in the tennis, the World Cup and after the ground appeared to open up and swallow our cyclists in the Tour de France! This edition arrives at the start of the Summer Holidays and has a slightly longer shelf life of six weeks, which spans September and October, before you’ll receive the Autumn edition. We’ve a lot to tell you as usual. Local stories of family life along Chatsworth Road, the Friends of Walton Dam, RSPCA news, Scarecrows, the Chatsworth Road Festival and a local man’s love affair with Stenhousemuir, plus all the regular features. We’ve had feedback from businesses and it seems many of you have been tempted by the handmade Chocolates at Libby’s and the NEDIAS guys have had new people in touch following their article. Thank you for taking notice, it’s always good to hear that S40 Local is well read. In the last edition we talked about our exciting project to change our website. Well, to give you an update, we’ve now agreed a design (as shown) and we’re working to get it all sorted behind the scenes. It appears that making it look nice is the easy bit!

In March 1962, in Robinson and Sons Ltd company magazine, The Link, an article appeared featuring the building where Palfreyman’s Music and The Barbers now reside. Written by Philip Robinson and illustrated by Alec (Jock) Turner from the company, Jock has provided us with this piece to reproduce for you, to provide a new perspective for some, and a moment of reminiscence and nostalgia for others.

The Bestwicks of Brampton. Castles are not the only buildings with historical associations, enshrining old memories. Shakespeare was born in a cottage, as were hundreds of other men and women who left their mark on their day and generation. The group of buildings, familiar to all in Brampton, at the corner of School Board Lane and Chatsworth Road, was home for several generations of the Bestwick family, originally from Holmsfield. Tom was the last Bestwick to live there, from the little corner shop he carried on a very successful milk round, some of his cows kept in the buildings behind the shop. Tom Bestwick’s father, Henry, was a wellknown butcher and cattle dealer, farming some of the fields between School Board Lane and Stone Row; very handy for turning his cattle out on the finer days of winter, with the main farm was South of Chatsworth Road from Wash House Lane up to Brookside. Other demolished cottages adjoining Tom’s old shop were part of an extensive range of buildings used by Henry Bestwick for slaughtering cattle; and keeping cows. Henry was one of a family of five, three girls and two boys; his wife Emma Biggin, hailed from Holmesfield, and died in 1921 aged eightysix. Unfortunately, Henry died when he was a comparatively young man. School Board Lane was only a cart track in those days, with wooden gates at the entrance to Chatsworth Road. The Bestwicks had a well established garden and orchard on the other side of the lane. Henry Bestwick had a fine family of eight children, three girls and five boys. John Henry the eldest son succeeded to his father’s butchery business whilst Tom, the third son, took over the farming side of the business. Tom’s youngest brother Charles was in business in Cross Street, Brampton as a baker and confectioner. George the fourth son was in business as a butcher in Chatsworth Road. Henry had a sister named Hannah who made history for the family when she married William Wilson, a snuff manufacturer of Sheffield, and lived at a very fine house in Dore on the outskirts of Sheffield called ‘The Moss.’ Wilson’s Mills were known as ‘The Sharrow Snuff Mills.’ In more recent years the members of this family lived in Horsleygate, at the far end of the Cordwell Valley, and were Masters of the Barlow Hunt. The Brampton Bestwicks

were on the friendliest and happiest terms with Hannah and were frequent visitors of her Sheffield home; and two of the daughters of Henry, Emma and Edith, made their home in Sheffield with their aunt. Mrs. Hannah Wilson was called ‘Hannah’ after her aunt, who married a man named Potter, and occupied the corner cottage adjoining Tom’s shop. This cottage was known as the Toll Bar House, and after her husband’s death Hannah Potter carried on as toll bar keeper, she was the last person to do so. An historical relic of her trade survives, in the picture of a very handsome front door of this cottage a metal eye can been seen sticking out from the side doorway - the chain which used to close the road was hooked into this old eye. Chains across the road were not as common as gates at toll bar houses and it is how the district came to be known as Chain Bar, Brampton. The old boot scraper at the side of the door is also a reminder of the times when stone pavements and tarmac roads were unknown. On the other side of the road alongside the cart-way leading down to the ‘New Brampton Colliery’ was the post to which the other end of the chain was permanently fastened. Toll bar houses were a common feature on English roads, dozens of them seen in the course of an afternoon’s motor ride from Chesterfield. These toll bars must have been very effective at reducing the amount of traffic on the roads, for a horse going through Chain Bar had to pay 4d, and if it was hitched to a carriage the owner would have to hand 8d over to the toll bar keeper. Cows were charged 2d and flocks of sheep 1d per sheep. If this had been the only toll bar between Chesterfield and Baslow the charge wouldn’t have been quite so burdensome, but the name ‘West Bars’ reminds us that a toll bar was there too; and there was still another at Brookside, its existence is commemorated in the new street which ran down the side of the old toll bar keepers cottage, known as Brookside Bar. The old toll bar cottage was pulled down, the last occupier a cattle drover. One hundred and fifty years ago there was no free use of the roads and there were toll bars on all main roads. Even as late as 1840 they were often to be found at intervals of six to eight miles and every vehicle going through had to pay, except when a corpse was being taken in a wheeled vehicle to a church or a farmer moving his stock from one farm

The tolls were clearly stated on the board which hung at every toll bar, and contrary to modern practice there was a lower charge for big heavy wagons, the reason being that wagons always had very broad wheels and were welcomed by those who owned the toll because they helped to roll in the stone which was put on the roads to fill up holes and ruts. Needless to say, these toll bars were not popular and in Wales there was one toll bar which was burnt down over and over again. One old hawker, by the name Jimmy Ford, had his own way of evading payment at Chain Bar; as pedestrians were allowed to go through free, just before he approached Chain Bar he would stop his Donkey cart, unharness the donkey and put it in the cart, and then pull it through the toll bar gate himself. One can gain a little quiet amusement by imagining the conversation between Jimmy Ford and Mrs Hannah Potter.

Our Brampton Chain Bar cottage still stands, and was the first home of Mrs. Emma Turner, daughter of Tom Bestwick, where she brought up a fine family of eight children five boys and three girls-all born in this little three-bedroomed cottage. Her husband, who served as an officer in the 1st Battalion Nottingham and Derbyshire during the 1914/18 war, died in 1937 leaving his wife the hard task of bringing up her large family with the eldest only fourteen years of age. Later, four of the unmarried members of the family lived with their mother in a very lovely home in Haddon Close, in which, on festive occasions the whole Turner family gathered. With the four sons’ wives and four grandchildren it totalled sixteen members; and it is interesting that two of these, ‘Jackie’ and ‘Jock’, worked at Portland works.

Toll bars received their death blow when railways were built and at the yearly auction of the rights to collect tolls, bidders often failed to turn up. Tolls only lingered on at bridges. As late as 1931 there were still 88 toll bridges across the country, but it was not long before these vanished.

Rebuilding a bright future for animals in need Chesterfield Animal: Centre Rebuild Appeal Words by Penelope Morgan.

Chesterfield and North Derbyshire RSPCA has just launched a fundraising campaign to raise an initial target of £250,000 by the end of 2016. The money will be used to modernise and update the accommodation for the animals in their care. I visited the Chesterfield RSPCA animal shelter on a rainy July afternoon to see for myself what this appeal is all about and why the rebuild and refurbishment is so important. I can tell you first hand that the roof of the rabbit and guinea pig enclosure no longer keeps out the rain. The problem for the Centre is summed up by Gary Taylor, animal care manager: “Our animal centre dates back to the 1960s and over time our buildings have become very tired and run down. We have done our best to make do and mend whilst keeping the care of the animals a priority – but it is now clear that we are facing major costs just to keep a roof over the animals’ heads.” Those of you who volunteer and fundraise for our local RSPCA branch will know that it costs £1000 a day to keep the Animal Centre open. This enables staff to care for animals who have been badly neglected and mistreated as well as to rehome more than 800 animals a year (including 328 dogs and 246 cats). Although the RSPCA is a national organisation, each branch is a separate charity, responsible for its own fundraising and management. The Chesterfield and North Derbyshire Branch cares for animals from Dronfield to Clay Cross and Castleton to Shirebrook. Sue Hallam, fundraising manager, responsible for ensuring money comes in to keep the Animal Centre going said “this is an exciting opportunity which really needs the support of the local community. We would love people to organise fundraising events, nominate us for

your sponsored events, donate directly, make us the charity of the year for your business or school and spread the word about our appeal”. Sue went on to say “this is a marathon not a sprint but we are hoping to raise enough money to start the first phase of the project in the autumn”. Staff and volunteers at the Animal Centre work very hard to make sure animals are comfortable and well cared for. They know that the Centre is an important facility for the Chesterfield and North Derbyshire community. As Rachel Gray, the Branch Manager said: “the RSPCA is as much about people as it is about animals. We re-home the pets that people are no longer able to care for and we match people with animals that will become much loved members of their family”. For a local charity with high overheads, this is a very ambitious fundraising project. Supporters are already getting involved: Grassmoor Glass is making a donation to the appeal for each customer order made over the next few months, The Anchor Pub on Factory Street had a collection for the appeal at their recent music festival and supporters are raising sponsorship to run the Chesterfield half marathon. You can also look out for the fundraising weekend being organized by Dobbies Garden Centre. There are ways for everyone to be part of this appeal. Chatsworth Road Festival 4 to 13 October 2014

Why it’s worth supporting Chatsworth Road is our community shopping area and one of the council’s ‘District Centres’ and during 2014 became a conservation area, aimed at protecting some of the unique features that give the area its appeal. It bustles with interesting independent shops and cafes but is also busy with cars, can be difficult to park on and is spread across a long stretch separating shopping areas into distinct groups. The support of the local community is what sustains this interesting mix, without people choosing to support independent shops in preference to national chain stores the road might see a change towards a higher proportion of charity shops, betting shops, takeaways and off licenses - which of course have their place as part of the wider mix, but alone would make for a sorry sight... The aim of the Chatsworth Road Festival is to celebrate the diversity, interest and choice by putting on events that encourage people to discover somewhere they’ve not been before, learn a new skill or attend an event where they meet new people and make friends - it’s about supporting independent businesses, building community spirit and reminding ourselves what’s great about where we live and why it’s worth supporting. The success of the festival and all our local businesses depends on every one of us, including YOU, and I hope during the week you are inspired to do your bit, to become a ‘shop local’ advocate and to nurture and protect what’s special about the people who live and work on Chatsworth Road. If you went to Somersall Park and Walton Dam for the duck race in June you’d be forgiven for feeling as though you’d entered a fairy festival, set in a glade in a wood, beside the river. Stalls had been assembled, food and drink were being served, people meandered around, pleased to be out of the heat of the sun; chatted, socialised and caught up with friends and neighbours. It felt like a little bit of magic. Well that’s not the only magic happening around the dam - there are the Walton Wombles, tidying up the rubbish that the everyday folk leave behind.

The area, from the bridge at the end of Somersall Park right down to Walton Road, is private land, owned by Robinsons PLC and as such isn’t maintained by the council. In 2007, a group of around 20 people formed the Friends of Walton Dam to help take care of the area. Unfortunately that group has dwindled to just six people over the last seven years. Those six local people - Anne Meakin, Kath Higson, Rachel Driver, John Tait, Christine Bathe and Glenice, now voluntarily do the work - organising litter picks and emptying the

Article bin which they installed to keep the place tidy. Over the years they’ve also installed the three benches along the side of the dam and around 20 bird boxes, which they have to arrange to be cleaned out each year. They’re a group we should be incredibly grateful to as it’s a part of Chesterfield which is precious to many - an oasis of calm and an alternative walking/cycling route to the busy Chatsworth Road. Used for bowling, cricket, football, angling, canoeing, to simply play in and a nearby area giving people a space where they can breathe and gain a sense of wellbeing. For some of the local elderly residents the installed benches are a godsend - having commented “If I have a sit down at each of the benches, I can get through the park and down to Morrison’s. It’s just the rest points I need to get out and enjoy the environment”. But, with only six members the group is in need of some new blood, some new ideas and a bit of new energy. “We’ve loved being involved and we get a great sense of achievement when we see people resting on the benches and enjoying the views. But we’ve been doing it for seven years now and we’re getting a little jaded. We need some new people to get involved and help us out” explains Anne. “But there are small things people can do to help out, without getting involved in the meetings and the group. If everyone picked up a bit of litter as they wandered through and took it home, there’d be less need for us to collect. If people took their rubbish or dog poo bags home, or just dropped them in the council bins installed in the Somersall Park or on Walton Road, we’d have to empty the bins less often and that would really help us out”. “We are currently investigating whether we can become a registered charity so we can raise funds to support the work we do. “Work so far has been funded with £5,300 from Lottery funds in 2007 and recently Morrison’s have offered support by providing bags for the bins and gloves for the people emptying them, free of charge, which is great” says Anne. If you love the oasis that is Walton Dam and would like to help out The Friends, they’d love to hear from you. It’s not a massive task and you’ll be pleased to know that unlike The Wombles it’s not necessary to have a pointy nose and live in a burrow. Call John on 01246 203712. Scarecrow Festival Words by Paul Chapman August approaches and yet again the threat of invaders grows. Scarecrows! It’s the time of year when residents of Holymoorside and nearby parts of Walton start stuffing straw down trousers and building scarecrows to adorn gardens, walls, roofs, seats etc for two weeks from 21st August. This year’s theme is “Nursery Rhymes” and the Scarecrow Trail will coincide once again with the Holymoorside Well Dressing and parish events including a flower festival, which are planned to commemorate WW1. Leaflets showing scarecrow locations can be collected from the village shop. Anyone interested in how to make a scarecrow can attend a workshop in Holymoorside URC hall on Sunday 10th Aug. 2-4pm. That evening when Stevie was in bed, his mum rang Dean’s mum and asked about the Kip McGrath summer school. Dean’s mum said he’d had a good time, loved the computer games and hadn’t realised that he was actually learning English punctuation at the same time. She said he’d be going again this year for 3 sessions a week for the last two weeks in August. Why, was she thinking of letting Stevie go too? Dean’s mum also said that with a long holiday the children’s brains relax and it takes a few weeks to get back to the same level. She said that Dean had been keen to go back, and absolutely astonished his new teachers with his much improved Maths and better English. She said that the biggest thing for her was Dean’s increased confidence, in his lessons and the fact that he was moved up a set in both English and Maths made it a good investment. She also said that you need to book as places are going fast. Stevie’s mum asked a few more questions and agreed that Stevie could join Dean this summer. The next morning she told Stevie the news. ‘’Whoo Hoo I’m going to Kip this summer ‘’yelled Stevie.

New Home: New Start Manor Preschool relocates Words by Paul Chapman.

After 15 years at Brampton Moor Methodist Church, Manor preschool is beginning a new chapter at Walton Village Centre, Walton Back Lane. Finding a new home is never easy, and finding one that can accommodate a family of four adults and up to 17 children is even more daunting, however this didn’t put off the team; Shirley Beaumont, Jane Amissah, Tracey Johnson and Rebecca Ward. “We’re looking forward to settling into our new home and are very excited about the new facility and the services we can offer our children.” The team would like to thank all the parents for their fantastic support during the search for a new home. Barlow & Stenhousemuir A Perfect Match.

Dave Hattersley is a local lad through and through, born three doors down from the, now gone, Terminus on Chatsworth Road. Today he lives in Walton, he and his brother Andrew are directors of the family business, Hattersleys Funeral Directors. Dave is one of the board members of Brampton Brewery and helped them set up and open the Tramway and the Rose and Crown. He also plays football for Barlow Kingston Rovers FC. Stenhousemuir is a small town in the Forth Valley area of Scotland, north of Falkirk and south of Stirling, with around 10,000 residents, Page 46 www.s40local.co.uk

it’s around a tenth the size of Chesterfield. Its population used to be employed in heavy industry, which is virtually all gone, and in oil refineries. Like Chesterfield, Stenhousemuir has a football team. In this small town people love their local team, Stenhousemuir FC, nicknamed ‘The Warriors’ with a passion. But one of their more unusual fans is Dave Hattersley, from here in Brampton - the team captured his heart as a teenager in the 1970s and he became a lifelong supporter.

It’s a million miles away from the kids who idolise the highly paid football superstars of the premiership teams today. Dave explains “It was the done thing to have a Scottish team to support in the late 60s and I’ve never been one to follow the herd. I snubbed the teams of the day like Aberdeen and Rangers and decided to opt for something a little more obscure. There was a lad at school called Ian Stenhouse, and every time I saw his name it reminded me of Stenhousemuir, a place I’d visited whilst holidaying in Scotland. I also came across a cartoon about them so looked to see where they were in the league and they were invariably propping up Division two. I decided to make them my team... “Once I’d opted for them as my Scottish team I stuck with them, and in 1973 got my first season ticket, costing a grand total of £3.50 as a reward for passing my O-Levels. It wasn’t until 1974 that I could even get to Scotland and I travelled there to renew my season ticket when I obtained transport to get myself up to the ground.” “The welcome I received at Stenhousemuir was always amazing, everyone was so welcoming and took to me as much as I took to the club. “It was long before the days of commercial football” says Dave. “I remember travelling to York to buy a York City football scarf, as it was in the same colours as Stenhousemuir. I got some badges made locally of the logo and sewed them onto the scarf myself.” In the Stenhousemuir FC crowd, typically 200 to 300 people, it wasn’t long before the board of directors singled Dave out as someone they didn’t recognise. “They were so grateful for

the support of someone who travelled so far, a few times each year, to watch them play. I was welcomed by the fans and received fantastic hospitality.” In 1995 The Warriors had a great run of success defeating Aberdeen and St. Johnson to make it to the quarter finals of the Scottish FA Cup, losing 4-0 to Hibs. Before the game, Dave got a call from the board offering him some tickets, he travelled up together with Tim Dann from the Peacock Inn. Later that same year Stenhousemuir beat Dundee United in the Scottish Challenge Cup, the first trophy in their then 111 year history. As usual a great time was had by all and Dave was welcomed as if one of the family, “I love the way the club involves me, I was invited along to join in the celebrations at the Plough with the players and manager after the match”. Following the success, the book ‘Onwards and Upwards’ was published, charting the teams history from 1884 to 1995. Dave gets a mention about being a member of the board of directors between 2004 and 2009. Dave has always played football at Barlow (still having an occasional short session on the field) and always wanted to take a team from Barlow to play at Stenhousemiur. In 2000 he put a team together and travelled up in a minibus. 2015 will be the 15th year the team from Barlow will play at Stenhousemuir. The Warriors have reciprocated and this year travelled down in May for their tenth anniversary tour, playing at Gosforth Fields, Dronfield. “One of the Barlow team members is even married to the club secretary’s daughter at Stenhousemuir and has moved to Scotland” adds Dave, “it’s great to see him when we travel up there.”

Johnny Thompson who organises the trips to Chesterfield summed the relationship between the two teams in the note below to Dave following this year’s visit.

‘Ever since our first trip in 2004, the lads from Stenhousemuir FC have enjoyed a welcome second to none from everyone associated with Barlow, as well as from the many friends that we’ve made along the way. We’ve now had ten great years and look forward to the next ten. A big thanks has to go to Dave Hattersley for organising everything at the Chesterfield end, we couldn’t do it without him.

The only downside this year was that we suffered our first footballing injury to date, with one of our players, Ryan Stevenson, rupturing his patella tendon. A big thanks have to go to Chesterfield Royal for looking after him. A special note has to also go to the local hostelries who welcome us with open arms, year in year out. It’s 51 weeks (at the time of writing) to their next visit, and if Mr Salmond gets his way there’s a chance that next time they’ll need passports! Flag Flying at Ibrox

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No it’s Mr Schumann! Old Hall School Council recently asked the children what they wanted to change at school and the resounding answer was more playground equipment. The idea of a Trim Trail was discussed and quickly agreed on. The children investigated costs and designs in catalogues and found the kind of thing they would like. There was no need to order it though as it was made by S40 Local advertiser Oliver Curley from Curleys products. He assembled and installed it in July and it was officially opened by Mr Schumann the deputy head as one of his last jobs before he leaves Old Hall to take up a new post at Ambergate Primary School. The children all love the new Trim Trail and after Mr Schumann had done his thing they set about exploring its limits! Chesterfield Barbarians: Victorious Chesterfield Barbarians Cricket Club Girls won the Derbyshire Finals of the National Lady Taverners eight a side girls cricket competition at Spondon Cricket Club Derby. The S40 girls won all their games beating Spondon, Amber Valley, Hayfield, South Derbyshire and North Derbyshire Girls. Real Heroes In the middle of a busy World cup season that searches for the next sporting Heroes, a local project “Spokes” put on a fantastic evening to celebrate some of Chesterfield’s unsung champions. This is a partnership between local schools, agencies, and Lifehouse Church.

The young people enjoyed a V.I.P lounge and were entertained by local youth band ‘The House of Lights’. The High Sherriff David Coleman summed up an outstanding night “This will certainly make a great difference to their lives”

Each year young people are identified that have found themselves in incredibly challenging circumstances, but have displayed outstanding character and attitude to keep going forward. This year’s project was sponsored by many organisations including Derbyshire Community Foundation and the Derbyshire High Sherriff fund. Awards presenter The High Sherriff David Coleman declared these amazing young people “real heroes”. A vibrant applause was heard for every one of the winners, who received either a trip to the theatre in the West End, a trip to Chill factor in Manchester or a bike with safety training provided by Derbyshire Police.

If you’re going away try to arrange for a friend or neighbour to harvest any vegetables that will be ready while you’re away. Most that produce seeds (like peas or runner beans) will stop producing if any of the seeds ripen, so you need to stop that happening. Also you’ll need pots and growbags watered…

2.

Again if you’re going away, gather all your houseplants close together in one place – the bath, lined with an old blanket or something similar, is ideal – and thoroughly soak each one (and the blanket). Shade the windows so the room stays relatively cool; a couple of weeks in the shade will do them much less harm than drying out.

3.

Prune hedges – doing it now will give time for some new growth before it slows down in autumn.

4.

Keep sowing quick-maturing salad crops – rocket, radishes, mixed leaves and some lettuces are all candidates – they’ll go on growing until the first frosts. Several lettuce varieties including Winter Density, Great Lakes and Lambs lettuce (corn salad) will last through the winter.

5.

If you’ve got empty patches of soil, consider sowing a green manure; this will cover the ground and is then dug in to improve its fertility (don’t let it set seed).

6.

If you want to save seed of a particular plant, choose a good specimen. At the Brampton Food Fair in October Transition Chesterfield will be holding a Seed Swap (vegetables only though) where you’ll be able to trade saved seed for others, which may include some hard-to-find varieties. There’s lots of advice online about saving and storing seed, or check the library.

7.

There’s quite a range of vegetables that can be sown now and left to over-winter in the ground, too many to list here. Have a look in a book or online – try a few different sites to see what they recommend.

8.

If your lawn has a tendency to collect water on the surface, it’s probably compacted. To fix this, go over it with a fork, pushing it in to a depth of at least six inches, every nine inches or so. Then wiggle it gently back and forth, pull it out and brush or pour sand into the holes (builders sharp sand is fine – the horticultural stuff isn’t necessary for this). .

9.

Keep feeding birds to attract them to the garden, where they will also hunt out damaging insects and larvae. A shallow pool is also a great wildlife draw, with the possible added bonus of seeing blackbirds washing themselves in an appealing and comical fashion.

10. If you have surfeits of fruit or veg, from September until December Transition Chesterfield will be holding monthly produce swaps at their regular Green Drinks - bring anything edible you’ve grown or made yourself and trade it with others. The location is the White Swan , St Mary’s Gate (opposite the church), from about 7:30pm onwards.
