Intro Hi and welcome to the start of Autumn.

As the sun starts to set earlier and the leaves start to turn we have a final celebration before hunkering down for winter. The Chatsworth Road Festival is now in its fourth year and we have a whole heap of events for you to attend. Please take a look at the listings, book your place and update the diary. Please make sure you check before going though as it’s been a difficult task putting the listings together and it wouldn’t be right unless we got a few things wrong! Also The Market has a Festival running between 24 Oct and 1 Nov so there are more events to get involved in once Chatsworth Road has taken down the bunting. We’ve had a late request in for help from The Gospel Mission for their event ‘Old Road Remembers’. The Gospel Mission Congregational Church’s annual Remembrance Day Service will commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of World War I by remembering the local people of Old Road and its surrounding areas - such as Beehive Yard, Brocklehurst Piece, Shaw’s Row etc. - who were involved in that dreadful conflict. During the Service they’ll be mentioning as many individuals as possible who served in World War 1 who were either linked to the church or who lived around the Old Road area that it serves. They need your help in this. If you have names of either relatives or neighbours who lived in our area and were involved in World War 1 and any information about them please e-mail the Church Secretary, Chris Townsend: gospelmissionuk@aol.com In addition please bring along any medals, photographs or other memorabilia that you’d be happy to form part of a World War I display at the Service, please let Chris know. For anyone who doesn’t know, The Gospel Mission is situated near the junction of Old Road and Chatsworth Road, up the drive next to Serpent Motors. The Remembrance Day Service – ‘A Community at War’ - will be held on Sunday November 9th at 10.45am. That’s all for now, I’m off to gather supplies for the winter. Paul.

FESTIVAL A festival or gala is an event ordinarily staged by a community, centering on and celebrating some unique aspect of that community and its traditions, often marked as a local or national holiday.

CELEBRATE Publicly acknowledge (a significant or happy day or event) with a social gathering or enjoyable activity.

CHATSWORTH ROAD FESTIVAL 11 days to celebrate living and working on or around Chatsworth Road, Chesterfield. Events and places to relax, taste, shop, pamper, play, socialise, create, inspire, learn, explore and enjoy. In this, the Festival’s fourth year, the people of Chatsworth Road have again pulled out all the stops to bring to you a varied programme of events and offers. Use this guide to select your chosen events and don’t forget to book if necessary. We hope you will get involved, have a great time and make the festival a fantastic success. Once the festival is over please tear off the Chatsworth Road Map and stick it on your fridge, wall or wherever you can find space. It’s a great reminder of the number of businesses along Chatsworth Road and the huge selection of products and services on your doorstep. Thanks to Chesterfield Borough Council for providing funding from the Community Chest budget for the Archeological Dig events together with the Parks and the Past Leaflet (available from Created Gallery) and to Derbyshire County Council for providing funding from the DCC Community Leadership Scheme to assist with promotion of the Festival. Have you ever wondered who makes the Chatsworth Road Festival happen? I think it is time we all knew a bit more about the people responsible for what has become such an important event in the Chesterfield Calendar.

The Story The idea to hold a Festival began when a regular visitor to Chesterfield walked into Created Gallery with a copy of S40 Local in her hand. So many new businesses and events were listed that she had decided to see for herself what was going on. As she left the shop the lady said to Deirdre Gage (owner of Created) “there is so much going on here you should have a festival””. Deirdre thought this was a great idea and said to Paul Chapman “we should have a Chatsworth Road Festival’. At this point most people would have thought about the work involved and left it as an interesting idea – but not Paul and Deirdre. Paul spoke to Dominic Stevens of Destination Chesterfield who also loved the idea and helped find funding for the guide. Committee members were recruited, and here we are four years later with a fully-fledged Festival.

The People The Festival is organised by a committee of volunteers: Deirdre Gage runs Created Gallery, a family business. I asked her why she put her time into the Festival. She said: “This community, where I live and work, is very important to me. I want to let people know about the exciting work going on in this part of Chesterfield.” Deirdre added “It is exciting to see the Festival grow. This year for the first time we have an archaeological dig. Who knows what will happen next!“ Colin Harrison is a video maker and a strong believer in community groups and in creating community cohesion. Colin told me: “I moved to Chesterfield eight years ago and joined Transition Chesterfield because I am concerned about the environment and want to work with others to make positive changes. When Paul asked me to join the committee I saw it as great opportunity to create an even stronger community here.” Page 22 www.s40local.co.uk

Shirley Niblock has always lived and worked in Chesterfield and was a deputy head before she became a local councillor. Shirley told me that “Being a councillor is not about politics, it’s about people. Our local community is very important to me and the Festival gives us a chance to be creative together. I enjoy thinking outside the box and this is a chance to bring people together in new ventures” Shirley is proud of her founding role in the St Thomas’ Food Fair which has its third birthday at the festival. Jane Simmonds is a member of St Thomas’ and represents churches along Chatsworth Road. “I only joined the committee recently “ Jane said, “but I love encouraging people to work together. St Thomas’, Storrs Road Methodist, The Gospel Mission and the Lighthouse Churches are hosting events for the festival and putting on special services. It is great to find ways of encouraging the whole community of Brampton.” Clare Gage is a ceramic artist. She encourages other local artists to get involved. Clare said “I want to give everyone the chance to be creative and ‘get their hands dirty’. I had a baby in December so I have not been very involved in planning this year but I want to offer people the opportunity to try things they haven’t tried before. I love living and working here and want to celebrate that with the whole community.” Teresa Lambarelli , owner of Café Aroma, grew up in Chesterfield and is part of a family business which has been on Chatsworth Road since 1976. Her father came to Chesterfield from Italy, married a local girl and started a deli and restaurant. She is carrying on his tradition – bringing great Italian home cooking to Chesterfield. Teresa said: “I have always lived and worked here and I think we have a lot to celebrate.” John Rhodes, owner of Select Interiors, grew up in Chesterfield. He developed a passion for beautiful rugs and carpets and set up Select Interiors to concentrate on buying and selling them from his shop on Chatsworth Road. He has travelled through India, Pakistan and Iran learning about the work methods and the culture of the people who make these lovely oriental rugs. John said “when Paul asked me to get involved I thought the Festival was a great idea. It is an ideal opportunity for businesses to get involved in community activities and build new relationships.”

Sofia Latif-Ward works within Harley’s, her family business, which has been around for nearly 20 years. Sofia said “I enjoy organising events and helping other store holders around me. I love being apart of the community on Chatsworth road.” Sofia, John and Teresa, are business champions encouraging other businesses to run events during the Festival. Howard Borrell works at Chesterfield College, is a local councillor and is the pub coordinator for the Festival. Howard masterminded much of the music side of the Festival. He ‘match-makes’ pubs and bands and is creating ‘busk stops’ along Chatsworth Road. Howard says “Pubs have always been an important part of the community and the Festival gives us chance to get together and listen to live music in some of our great hostelries.”

Last, but definitely not least, Paul Chapman, owner of S40 Local takes on the job of designing and producing the festival program every year. He started S40 Local to provide a place for local businesses and community groups to advertise their services and activities: “It is great to celebrate the strong sense of community which has built up in our area over the last few years. The Festival encourages people to visit places they have not been to before and maybe become regulars.”

The Market Hall A chat with Andy Bond from Chesterfield Borough Council. Words by Paul Chapman.

Chesterfield Market Hall reopened for business in October 2013 following its total refurbishment. I met up with Andy Bond, Chesterfield’s Town Centre Operations Manager, to see how things are working out. “We got off to a great start” says Andy. “The Market Hall won the National Association of British Market Authorities’ award for best small indoor market 2013.” Chesterfield’s market is one of very few remaining markets that sit in the heart of a town. It plays an important part in bringing people into town on the market days. “The outdoor pitches pay per day whereas the businesses in the indoor market are on a lease so you know they’ll be there everyday. The aim with the redesign was to create a High Street experience but under one roof. There is a ‘wet’ and a ‘dry’ side offering foods including a butcher, fishmonger, deli, nut stall, sweets and cup cakes etc together with household items like vacuum spares” explains Andy. “The general outdoor markets take place on Monday, Friday and Saturdays and we have the well attended Flea Market every Thursday.” Amongst the 45 units you’ll also find a florist, cheese stall, haberdashery, baby wear, mobility, phones, shoe repairs along with a wide range of services - all part of the Market Hall’s offer. There are a host of new facilities in the Market Hall including a new cafe, toilets with full disability facilities and baby changing. There are also now two more floors of office units and workPage 28 www.s40local.co.uk

spaces which are leased by seven businesses and the Market Team are in this central location. This is generating revenue from what was previously dead space. The Assembly Rooms, “one of Chesterfield’s many hidden gems, is now available for hire” adds Andy. It can accommodate 200 people for a party or 135 for a seated event and includes full catering facilities. Two meeting rooms with full projection and IT facilities are also available for hire. “The building is now self sufficient and will stand alone financially. It’s a great showcase for energy efficiency with solar photovoltaic panels on the roof, bike racks and showers. The old Market Hall cost the council money each year, it simply didn’t cover its costs” outlines Andy. If you’re interested in leasing a stall in the Market Hall we have very limited space available today both indoor and in the units around the outside of the Market Hall” he adds. Looking to the future Andy is planning how to improve the outdoor space: “my challenge is to create a full market that feels more open and spacious, no empty stalls hidden away on quieter days.” There are big challenges for the Market: big businesses move in and people increasingly rely on the convenience of online shopping. However, I think we have a basic need to interact with others, to get to know people, to build relationships. I recognise that we need a mix of services and, I’m sure readers will be aware, I’m an advocate of supporting local traders. The independents and these traders who stand on stalls at the market and inside the Market Hall need people to support them. I have talked before about the idea of us all deciding to spend 10% (£1 in every £10) of outgoings with an Independent trader. It’s a small change to make but it has great rewards: buy your fruit and veg as you walk past the market, have your milk delivered to your front door, call into the butchers each week... Go on try it... I bet it’s not long before you’re recognised, banter will start and you’ll be completely comfortable asking for six mushrooms if that’s all you need!

Nonsolovino means ‘not only wine’ and at Chatsworth Road’s Michelin recommended restaurant, the food and the wine certainly stand on equal footing

produce traditional Italian food where the flavour shines through, no sauces to mask the flavours - Italian food has texture that stands on its own and needs to be savoured.”

New owners Michele Muccilli and Francesca Ventura took over the business in January this year and are intent on ensuring they stay on the Michelin map. “Food integrates with the wine selection - they go hand in hand” explains Michele. “To understand and experience the wines, you need good food and that’s what we’re about - the best food with fine wines - a complementary experience.”

“Our mission is to take customers on a journey where they experience Italian life and food, to provide something different and to serve food that won’t be found elsewhere” say Francesca. Nonsolovino are fully committed to Organic Farming and Slow Food procedures, using their products in their menus and offering for sale a selection of products to use at home.

Nonsolovino is a truly authentic Italian experience. Michele and Francesca are both Italian, passionate about food and their homeland. They came to Chesterfield in 2009, having been interviewed in Rome for positions at the newly opened Nonnas. “It was a six month project for us to experience life in the UK” explains Francesca, but Michele was quickly promoted and when my daughter Vittoria’s first words were English we decided to stay. Vittoria loves Chesterfield - she wants to spend the summer in Italy but doesn’t want to leave her friends - she loves Chesterfield but also loves her Italian family home.” Michele changed jobs and worked away from home at a London based wine supplier. This wasn’t ideal with a young family and when the opportunity came, he started working for a new wine supplier whilst working two nights a week at Nonsolovino and studying to be a Sommelier. It wasn’t long before the pair were in discussions to take over the business from previous owners, Peter and Andrea, and in January Michele became the new owner, with the support of a business partner. A few months later the business partner decided to leave and from this point on Nonsolovino became a family business and Francesca came on board to do the non-customer facing tasks. “Marco was our head chef for the first six months - we like to keep things simple, simple food all home made and, where we can, we use Italian suppliers so our menu is as authentic as possible” said Francesca. “We

The team at Nonosolovino are all Italian. Alessio is the new guy, just 19 years old and from Sicily, Fabrizio is the baker, he owned his own bakery in Italy and moved to the UK to expand his skills. Matteo, from Rome, is the Sous Chef and Achille is the new head chef. He has just arrived from a job in China and brings with him a wealth of experience. When businesses change hands it’s usual to expect changes but Francesca says that we will just see subtle menu changes. They will stick to the existing model producing fantastic dishes from across Italy. Wine is as important as the food and Michele’s training as a sommelier gives him knowledge of all aspects of wine service as well as choosing wine and food pairing to deliver the best possible combinations. Michele explained how he became interested in food “High schools in Italy are very different to the UK. I was at a food orientated school and worked whilst studying at 4 and 5 star hotels in Riviera. I spent time at a fine restaurant in Imola with a fantastic underground wine cellar, run by an Italian/ French owner who loved his wines. My own love of wines started there, with Francois as my mentor, and two years working in a three star Michelin restaurant nurtured my love of food. I’ve always been passionate about running my own place and I love life at Nonsolovino. I am particularly happy to be able to offer wines I import from our home town of Imola. Imola is in Emilia Romagnas, a regions of Italy that was awarded by Forbes magazine as the Best Region for Food in the world!”.

Nonsolovino opens 7 days a week for lunches and evening meals, and also offers special event nights. The lighter lunch menu includes a bocconcini selection - four dishes: starter, pasta, main and side served together on a wooden board (see photo) - with a glass of wine for £12. This is perfect for people who want a quicker lunch. The evening menu offers a more traditional fine dining experience. Francesca explained “We have a ‘Wine Women Wednesday’: tonight we have 44 ladies booked in for an evening of fine wine and a six course tasting menu especially created for the evening. Also look out for show cooking live: you can experience the excitement and passion of a Michelin recommended kitchen at the chef’s table. Watch as your bespoke menu is created in front of you. Enjoy the fine food and learn how to take home the skills to recreate the magic in your own kitchen. We also offer a Wine Tasting experience: An opportunity to taste 6 wines selected by Michele served with 6 courses of fine cuisine that will perfectly match the wines selected for the night. Equity Release Simon Chalk from Age Partnership explains Equity Release and if it’s right for you. Words by Paul Chapman.

As property prices continue to climb skywards a record number of homeowners are benefitting by releasing some of the equity, enabling themselves and their families to put the money to good use today, when it is often most needed. Equity release plans are becoming increasingly popular as they allow some of the value in our homes to be taken out of the property and used for anything you can think of. With one of the country’s top advisers, Simon Chalk – a winner of four national awards, living and working right here in S40, I thought he would be ideally placed to help me understand what equity release is and how it could perhaps work for you.

“I only recommend plans from providers who are members of the Equity Release Council meaning that my clients are assured of several important guarantees including the right to remain in your own home until the last owner dies or moves into long-term care, and a ‘nonegative equity guarantee’ meaning that you can never owe more than the value of your home”. Simon explained that this is where the ‘nonegative equity guarantee’ offers a safeguard because in the unlikely event that your home has fallen in value and the sale proceeds don’t clear the outstanding mortgage, any amount owing above the sale proceeds will be written off by the lender.

“The way the most popular form of equity release plan (a rolled-up interest Lifetime Mortgage) works is very simple; you borrow an amount of money based on the equity you have in your property and this money is made available for you to spend on anything you wish. If you have an existing mortgage on your home, then it must be paid off using the equity release money before the rest is free to use as you choose” outlined Simon, who went on to say “A fixed rate of interest is rolled-up against the loan so that you have nothing to pay during your lifetime. Instead when the last surviving borrower eventually dies, or moves into long-term care, the house is sold and the loan plus interest is paid off with the remainder passing to your estate”.

So how much money can people release and what do they spend it on?

“There are many urban myths surrounding equity release, with the most common being that you no longer own your own home, the children will inherit your debt or even that there won’t be anything left to leave to the children.” Simon, went on to explain how this isn’t the case thanks to the introduction of vital safeguards for customers in 1991 that still stand today.

Loans are available from age 55, and can be taken from as little as £10,000 mentioned Simon, with many opting for a ‘flexible drawdown’ style of plan, whereby they take only small sums they need in stages over the longer term; say £10,000 to begin with, followed by modest amounts from upwards of £1,000 whenever a little extra cash might come in handy.

“The amount you can release is based on the age of the youngest homeowner and is a fixed percentage of the property’s value. The older you are, the more you can release so a 55 year old for example, might qualify for just over 20% of the value of their home, whereas a 75 year old might be able to get 40% or more. Smokers or those with any health issues, even mild ones like blood pressure, can usually achieve higher sums still. There isn’t an upper age limit with many providers so I regularly receive enquiries from people wanting to help their parents (who may well be into their 80’s or 90’s) pay for care at home.”

“Most commonly clients in the S40 area release equity to top up their pension income, improve their home, pay for holidays and help the family. I often hear people say the banks seem less willing to lend nowadays, so being able to release equity from their home can be incredibly reassuring and if they wish to repay the interest or part of the loan, or even the whole loan; we can source a plan that allows them to do just that.” Simon doesn’t just advise on equity release, he also sits on the Standards Board of the Equity Release Council. “I’m helping set the standards of product design and advice across the whole country, ensuring customers’ best interests are thoroughly protected with stringent rules and guidance that goes further than that required by the Financial Conduct Authority; the Government body regulating equity release.” Simon has been in financial services for over 25 years, specialising in equity release for the past 11 of those years and his expertise and opinion has often been relied upon by the media including the BBC, The Sunday Times and Sunday Express. Kip McGrath congratulates and thanks their wonderful students... ...on their amazing exam results! Firstly, remember Sophie from the last article? We are thrilled to report that she achieved not one but TWO grade Bs for English! A fantastic achievement and much deserved. We had many students who sat exams last term and we were thrilled by their individual successes. Everyone achieved a grade or more above that originally predicted when they joined us, but for some students the results were astounding! Our students celebrated grade C or above passes in English and Maths GCSEs, and lots of grade 4s and 5s in year 6 SATs. A Special mention to Kyle and Harry for their SAT results - Kyle was predicted to achieve grade 2s but worked so hard with his tutor Sarah that he pulled a fantastic grade 4 out of the bag! While Harry had been predicted grades 2s and 3s but applied himself with great dedication and came away with grade 4s and a stunning grade 5! Well done! A special mention to Kate for her GCSE English result - when Kate joined Kip in September 2013, very

stressed and frustrated with her English grades, she was predicted grade D/E and had no idea how to go about turning things around. She had her heart set on a design course at college and needed a grade C to be accepted. Kate worked with Jo who identified a number of issues which they worked on steadily, but the results though better were not good enough for Kate and Jo. After a simple free writing task Jo saw that Kate wrote at such speed her sentences got confused and full of errors. Eureka!! Kate’s brain worked at ‘warp speed’ and her poor old pen couldn’t keep up! With practise to slow her thinking, the results were dramatic! Kate achieved the grade C she needed for College. Congratulations to all our exam students. Thank you for your hard work and for being so much fun to work with! Let’s see what this year’s students can achieve. Community News ‘Friends of Somersall Park’ How to get involved We’ve featured ‘Friends of’ groups in the past, in fact only last month we featured the Friends of Walton Dam. This month we’re excited to report on the formation of a new group - the Friends of Somersall Park. Improving the park has been a community aspiration for some time. A previous group have laid some fantastic groundwork, but unfortunately recent efforts stalled without a committee to take it forward. This time looks set to be different: a formal committee has been formed, and in a few short weeks the group have mobilised the community through a well attended meeting at the Rose and Crown, and a fantastic campaign on Facebook, which has seen membership grow to over 300 in only a few weeks. Clearly there is strong support for the improvement of one of our town’s best loved parks! Rebecca Robinson, Chairperson, picked up the baton from the previous groups and is determined to succeed, but they’re going to need lots of people across the community to offer time, support and resources to make this work. They are meeting the council in the next few weeks to form an action plan and will be setting up another meeting for interested people soon. If you’d like to get involved and offer support they’d love to hear from you. You can join the group ‘Somersall Park Friends’ on Facebook or send an email to friendsofsomersallpark@gmail.com to receive updates on upcoming meetings and activities. Britannia Bash Did you attend the Britannia Bash on 12th July? Victoria Crampton 6 Sahara marathons in 6 days! Kids ‘n’ cancer, the charity behind Chesterfield Marathon will be benefiting from Victoria Crampton’s quest to compete in the Marathon de Sables in April next year and raise £10,000 for that charity, which funds lifesaving treatment for young people with different forms of the illness. Considered one of the toughest runs in the world Victoria will run 150 miles, the equivalent of nearly six marathons, over six days in extreme temperatures of up to 50 degrees Celsius, alongside 850 other competitors from across the world, just 14 per cent of those competitors being women. The rules require competitors to be self-sufficient, which means - as well as contending with the heat - Victoria will have to carry everything except water she needs to survive. “I know it is going to be challenging, mentally as well as physically, and will be the hardest thing I’ll probably ever do. The heat, exhaustion and pain will be overwhelming. But I hope thinking about the reason I am doing it will spur me on.”

Chesterfield Garland Dancers is a women’s clog dance team. “We perform clog and garland dances, wear brightly coloured dress, waistcoats, aprons and clogs and use garlands and jingle sticks in our dances.” explains Margaret Hersee “The jingle sticks are made from actual bobbins from Cromford Mill, with the addition of bells and ribbons and we dance to traditional folk tunes, played by our band of musicians”. Garland dancing began in the 1800s in the mill towns of the North West of England. Most of the dances are inspired by the movement of the machinery in the mills - the wheels and cogs which made constantly changing patterns. We dance at well-dressings, carnivals, fetes, festivals, at residential homes and at stately homes. We also dance with other teams, either at local events or when invited to other events elsewhere. Dead-head perennials to keep them flowering longer; once they’ve completely finished it’s time to split and replant them. Also cut out the stems of rambling roses that carried flowers.

2.

There’s still time to sow quick-maturing oriental plants like pak choi; rocket and other fast-growing salads. Plants can also give a crop if sown now, although most will be killed by the first frost.

3.

Lift any remaining early potatoes and leave to dry in the sun for a day or two before storing in a cool, dark place. Cut the foliage off main-crops two or three weeks before harvesting, which helps protect against blight and encourages the skin to firm up.

4.

Keep harvesting peas, runner and french beans; like many vegetables (including courgettes) they will keep trying to produce more as long as they’re not allowed to set seed - it’s the same principle as dead-heading ornamental plants. Once they aren’t producing enough to be worthwhile, chop them off at ground level, leaving the roots (which will have stored nitrogen) to return it to the soil.

5.

Plant over-wintering onion sets and garlic. If there’s not space there are varieties that can still be planted in late winter – Transition Chesterfield will have some at their Potato Day in late January.

6.

Order and plant new fruit trees, and move existing ones (and shrubs) as necessary; as with plants grown in containers, soak the ground around the plant well before lifting and water in well when re-planted.

7.

Plant late winter and spring-flowering bulbs, which make everyone happy and provide valuable nectar for wildlife.

8.

Keep on top of tidying jobs, but leave as many ornamental seedheads as possible; they look good, especially frosted, and can provide food for birds. Attracting these to the garden can also help with pest control, as they will eat the eggs and larvae of some nuisance bugs.

9.

You should be able to mow the lawn less often, raising the blades slightly each time; now is the time to reseed or lay turf on any areas that need repair.

10. Spring bedding plants will be in garden centres for planting now. Like anything grown in containers they should be thoroughly soaked both before and after planting, regardless of how much rain there’s been. Also, sow hardy annuals for an early display next year.
