Intro Hi and welcome to the November edition.

This edition comes to you, for the first time, from my new office in the West Studios at Chesterfield college. It’s been exciting, if not a little technically challenging, trying to get set up so I can work in two locations, but the benefits of having a place to go to work are certainly outweighing the minor inconveniences - there’s more about the new offices on page 4. As I’m sitting doing the final review and amendments for this month’s edition I’m noticing that it seems to have an arty and creative slant. There’s a piece on the Print Fair taking place at Chesterfield college, a feature on local artist Susanne Haywood, who’s opening up her studio for you to visit on 8/9 November and a contribution from Paul Frith about his love of the Ukulele. With the Chatsworth Road Festival drawing to a close we also have a personal reflection on the week - the committee will be doing a review in the next few weeks and if you have any observations, ideas or you’d like to get involved with organsing next year we would love to hear from you - some fresh ideas and energy would be greatly appreciated. From an S40 Local perspective, we’ve learnt a valuable social media lesson this week. Our competition on Twitter to win £100 to spend on Chatsworth Road has been a bit of a failure, thank you to the people who did enter, but next year we are going to be less technical. In the meantime, enjoy Halloween and Bonfire Night and if you’re starting Christmas shopping please give our local shops a chance - they have shared some gift ideas on page 30. See you all in another month. Paul Chapman.

Have you seen Chesterfield College recently? Words by Paul Chapman

Digital and Creative small businesses make an important and significant contribution to our local economy. It’s this creative sector that Chesterfield College is supporting through a jointly funded project with the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The college has opened up Creative spaces in its newly refurbished West Block, off Sheffield Road, now known as West Studios, to lease to small creative businesses. It’s through this project that S40 Local has found an opportunity to move from the small office based at the back of my kitchen at home, to this shiny (very white) new office. Run by the College’s Arts department, these units not only encourage small creative businesses to start out and develop, they inspire students within the college, allowing them to see the possibilities self-employment can give them. The project has delivered five large studio spaces in a refurbished building, previously the Chesterfield Boys Grammar School on Sheffield Road, the sandblasted building now looking fresh and proud. The ground floor spaces have a contemporary finish with white brick walls, grey highlights and one of my favourite floors… Polyflooring, as seen in most swimming pools! The studio spaces provide shared working / office spaces, as well as a meeting room, large reception area and meeting tables when needed. All businesses have access to the full range of digital and traditional print processes, as well as all other facilities within the Arts department, kilns, metal workshops etc. S40 shares a space with Lynn Luddit, a writer/ trainer, Ellie Depp from Art by Ellie Depp (introduced in the November 2013 edition), Anjie Taylor from QDOS Creates, Vicky Bell from Tilly Fudge Design and Hannah Wheeler, illustrator – who also works as Graphic Designer for S40 Local designing adverts and laying out copy. Page 4 www.s40local.co.uk

The remaining studios house nine other creative businesses including Alison Glithero from Art at the Drawing Room, Deborah Langner, Guy Roberts, Gwin Kerry, John King, Matthew Pritchard, Phil McDonald, Steve Leach and Tom Bell all from Defeye Creative, Melanie Jackson from Melanie Jackson Design, Miriam Griffiths and Sarah Pasley. Local designer Melanie Jackson has recently enjoyed the limelight with her work the ‘Growth’ sculpture, chosen to greet people as they arrive at the Horns Bridge island. Sharlaine Fincham who coordinates West Studios explains that “It’s a fantastic project to be involved with, even if just to see the

Article breadth of creative minds we have in this area. The ERDF funding aims to provide advice and support to fledgling creative businesses and that’s exactly what we’re doing here at West Studios. All of the tenants receive ongoing support, with the opportunity to display work at our events and exhibitions. This package of practical support is reflected through our monthly ‘How About This?’ Makers Fair, which is also available to the wider creative community. They also have free tenancy for the first year so we’re giving them that helping hand to becoming a successful creative outfit.” Jeremy Asquith heads up the directorate of Digital and Creative Industries at Chesterfield College and overall responsibility is with him. “It’s amazing to have something like this on-site at College. The Digital and Creative Industries area was rated as outstanding by Ofsted in 2013 and with projects like this on their doorstep it really compliments the outstanding teaching and learning the students receive. They can learn from practising creative professionals, giving them a vital insight into industry. The area has strong creative roots and I’m thrilled that we can offer this kind of service to creative businesses that are in their infancy to help them achieve their goals.”

I find myself using the phrase “going to work” now with the kids, something I’ve not felt like I have been doing for quite a long time. I’m certainly finding it puts me in work mode much more so than the office at home, which can only be a good thing. The West Studios project is just one of many underway at the college. Infirmary Road is changing dramatically, many of the old engineering buildings gone and work in progress to replace them. One major change already delivered is the new reception area, a bright airy, contemporary space welcoming visitors and students to the college campus. It really is an impressive space and something that helps attract students to the college from areas outside of Chesterfield. The changes are complimented by the investment from the University of Derby which has allowed them to purchase the old St Helena’s building, the Former Girls High School which they plan to use for nursing courses, bringing jobs and students into town. Watch this space for progress. Check out West Studios and its tenants via their Facebook page (facebook.com/WestS41)

Now in at Libby’s An update from 479 Chatsworth Road.

L

ibby’s has got a new addition - sitting alongside her eclectic and gorgeous mix of gifts, antiques and cards, she is now re opening the coffee shop next to her. Libby explained “We have been scouring our recipe books, both old and new, looking for dishes that are healthy, simple and tasty. We have worked along the lines of what we enjoy at home, and what our customers think has been missing on Chatsworth Road. There will of course be some indulgent cakes, beautiful and different scones, and not forgetting our lovely chocolates.”

The cafe interior has undergone a minor makeover and offers a comfortable, warm and friendly atmosphere for you to come along and enjoy. Libby has just got back from Christmas sourcing trips, with some fantastic products from France, Belgium, Holland, Scandinavia and Greece to name but a few. There will be a late night shopping event on Monday 110th November to showcase these new collections. Libby looks forward to welcoming you at 479, in the near future.

“We have been scouring our recipe books, both old and new, looking for dishes that are healthy, simple and tasty”

Now in. Tea, coffee, fantastic food & of course... cakes.

The Chatsworth Road Festival. A Day Out. Words by Paul Chapman. As usual my copy week landed at the same time as the Chatsworth Road Festival, but in a frenzy of activity I still managed to get out and about to a few events and rather than go with camera in hand I went as a punter with the family so I could just enjoy it.

The first morning dawned with wet and windy weather - to say I was disappointed was an understatement, but I rallied the troops and off we went to the food market at St Thomas’. The weather certainly didn’t put you off, as people gathered to see Transition Chesterfield perform their sketch to encourage us all to insulate our home, and press apples gathered locally during their abundance campaign.

We stocked up on food goodies for tea before departing along Chatsworth Road, stopping at Libby’s for a browse and some chocolate, by Royal Appointment no less! We enjoyed buskers outside the old Brampton Moor church and ended up meeting family at Teresa Lambarelli’s Cafe Aroma to take up the lunch offer of pasta and prosecco. We finished off with ice creams from John Frederick’s van parked outside the Chatsworth business centre. He was just putting out his older vans as we arrived so we sneaked a picture with him and Basil, Old Hall School’s weekend bear given out to one class member as a treat each week! During the second festival weekend we booked on the tapas tasting night at Meringue. We started the night with friends having a beer in the Tap House before heading off to Meringue. We didn’t know what to expect and had called earlier to check whether we needed to eat first. We were assured that the tapas would be substantial and weren’t disappointed! We were warmly welcomed, showed to our table and quickly received our first olives and bread, ordered drinks and were off into the quiz, a lively atmosphere throughout the evening with a light hearted, food and general knowledge quiz. Our expectations were low with regard to our results in the quiz, but it appeared we hadn’t done as badly as we thought... there were tables who got less than us! The next morning brought my final event, the table top sale at St Thomas Centre’, an attempt to sell some of the stuff we had accumulated over time.

Then it was a weekend sat at the PC getting this edition ready. Obviously we couldn’t attend all events and call at every business and the selection of pictures on the previous pages doesn’t cover everything, but hopefully it gives an impression of a typical festival day, visiting local businesses, community venues and socialising with those who live nearby. Just what the Chatsworth Road Festival is all about. Thank you to everyone who got involved. If you would like to share your experiences or your photographs, we’d love to hear from you. Here’s to next year.

Thanks to Nicola Harris and Deirdre Gage for the photographs on the previous page.

Success comes in bite sized chunks! Jo Linthwaite @ Kip McGrath

Ever watched babies try to crawl? Ever seen a young person learning to drive and the concentration on their faces? Ever wiped away a tear when someone achieves a gold medal after years of hard work? No matter what we achieve it takes effort, frustration and practice and we all deserve recognition for our progress. This is one such amazing achievement that we saw at Kip recently. Jason was 8 years old, very quiet, severely lacking in confidence and selfesteem. He had a problem with reading; he could only manage to read 18 out of 120 Key Stage 1 words.

We designed an individual learning programme that tackled his confidence and learning needs, using a combination of computer based learning, flashcards, worksheets and 1-2-1 reading support. After each session Jason played a reading game using the flashcards. At the end of the game, he counted those he could read. He needed a lot of support and encouragement to ‘have a go’ but, week by week, the number increased, 24, 28, 33‌

This once quiet little boy began to make his presence felt, laughing and joking, interacting with other students. He even arrived with a smile on his face! We knew we had turned a corner when he began to bargain over which words he could keep and which he had to read again the following week! After 3 months, he had a big pile of words which he could read with confidence; as usual he started to count them. 64,65,66,67,68‌ and an amazing thing happened, the other students in the room became quiet and still. 91,92,93,94!

A huge cheer rang out and the other students burst into a spontaneous round of applause. Jason grew at least 2 inches; Jo and Sarah battled the lumps in their throats!

Jason had had his achievement, his success, recognised by his peers for what it was! He was a champion and they celebrated his hard work, refusal to give up and sheer bravery to make a change in his life.

We see success at Kip in many forms all the time, but that day all credit to those other children who saw it in Jason and responded so spontaneously and noisily. Jason will never be the same again. He has friends; he will take on any challenge because he has learned that he really can learn in bite size chunks!

Christmas Print Fair @West Studios Words by Nicola Chapman.

Affordable, Accessible Artwork direct from the designers. It’s what the Print Fair will offer on the afternoon of Friday 14 and Saturday 15 November (11am to 5pm) at West Block Studios at Chesterfield College. Think ‘Not on the High Street’ or ‘Etsy’ as a reference point for the types of quirky and unique print and design that will be available to buy. Hannah Wheeler, who’s organizing the event describes the print fair as “specialising mostly in flatwork – photographs, illustration, digital prints as well as screen prints and lino cuts, but explains there are also people who use printing techniques on ceramics and on T Shirts”. Prices obviously vary, but start from £1 for a greeting card up to £100 for a large framed print and in the run up to Christmas it couldn’t come at a better time for people on the hunt for interesting and inspiring gifts. Hannah graduated in 2012 with a degree in Illustration and animation and immediately started work as a freelance illustrator. Through friends of friends she picked up work producing illustrations for an animation. Alongside the commissions she also produces a range of prints, wrapping paper and greetings cards, which she sells at print fairs around the country. In June she decided to set up a print fair of her own at the Lifehouse Church on Chatsworth Road, to give designers and artists like herself a place to sell their work direct to the public “I’d been to craft fairs but what I do didn’t really seem to fit in with what everyone else was selling, it was as though people didn’t really expect to see what I had on offer in that environment”. The print fair was born to bring designers together. For the public it provides the opportunity to purchase design or artwork direct from the designers and artists, who are often local. “One of the things that people enjoyed after the last fair was the opportunity to meet and interact with the designers and artists, to understand where the work had come from and forging personal connections” Some of the confirmed Artists so far include (work pictured): • • • •

Simon Bray (Landscape Photographer) Vicky Bell (Stationery Designer) Robyn Jane (Ceramicist) Trudy Roe (Book Artist)

Article New Business

New Business: The Chip Inn Words by Paul Chapman. In July, Kos and Laura opened the doors of the Chip Inn, following a three week refurbishment of what was previously the Brampton Fish Bar at 134 Chatsworth Road. Kos has been in the trade all his life, his father having run a Fish & Chip shop in Birmingham for 48 years, “I was running my own business when I was just 14” adds Kos.

“Friends of ours own the building and called to say ‘we’ve got a shop if you’re interested in taking it on’. I came and had a look and we decided to move into the area and give it a go” explains Kos.

“We want to offer a personalised service, things cooked just the way you want them. If you like your fish lightly battered just tell us and we’ll cook it just how you like it. That’s what it’s all about, getting it right so people come back time and time again.” They serve exactly what you’d expect at the Chip Inn, traditional Fish & Chips with all the usual menu choices; Pukka Pies, sausages etc.

But they also serve some things you perhaps wouldn’t expect - garlic battered mushrooms, fresh battered onion rings and enjoy putting on specials. Saturday night is curry night, we make a large pot fresh each Saturday and it always sells out... Laura has to save a pot before it goes out to make sure she’s got some for her tea later on! “We were quite disappointed to miss the Chatsworth Road Festival start up” says Kos, “we’d have loved to have entered the Curry Challenge!” On Tuesday night they also do pie, chips and peas here and a pint in the grouse next door all for £5, the voucher can be bought at either business. With Halloween fast approaching they’ve been perfecting a Spooky Special - green chips with green battered sausage and blood red mushy peas! Look out for it on the day, but make sure you get in early before they sell out.

If you’ve not paid them a visit, call in, they’d love to see you and if you visit before the end of October you can still enjoy their two mini fish for the price of one offer.

Capturing memories, shaping futures. We’re often told that our school days, are the best days of our life!

And St Mary’s Catholic High School has been shaping those days for pupils and staff for 150 years. To celebrate the anniversary they launch their book, ‘St Marys Catholic High School Chesterfield - Celebrating 150 Years’, in December. Leonie Martin, an established author and former bursar of the school has produced the book. Five, year 13 students including Sarah Garland, Ella Heath, Emily Kelly, Laura Dunham and Natasha Williamson, are now working together to promote the book and record even more memories from past and present staff and students of the school

The school witnessed two world wars and endured some torrid times – in the first days there were no desks and today recognised by OFSTED as outstanding. Previously located at Spencer Street and Cross Street in Chesterfield, the school moved to its home in Newbold in 1981, the old buildings on Spencer Street and Cross Street remain the Catholic primary school. The book launch on Saturday 6th December, is at the Chesterfield Library from 1 ‘til 4pm where author Leonie Martin will hold a Q&A session and sign copies, which can be bought at the event. If you can’t make the launch, you can purchase the book from Chesterfield FC shop at the Proact, direct from St Mary’s Catholic High School or at other events planned throughout the year and online from Amazon. The book has been printed locally by Bannister Publications, the team behind Reflections magazine and hardback copies are available to buy for £15.99. To pre-order the book email 150th@stmaryschesterfield. org.uk

Sarah Garland, one of the students raising awareness of the book commented “the small Page 42 www.s40local.co.uk

team of us have been working hard with Leonie on the launch and it’s been great to have the opportunity to publicise the book. I’ve spent time with Anna Melton (In the Works PR) to focus on social media, snapshot videos capturing people’s memories on film and generally helping promote the book to make sure we sell the 2000 printed copies. It’s been a really valuable experience.” The funds raised from the sale of the publication will be split between support for a school in Burkina Faso, Africa, which St Mary’s helped to build, and Ashgate Hospice.

The team are looking for ex-St Mary’s students who may have memories and pictures they would be happy to share, to use at promotional events and on the school website through the year. If you do have something that may be of interest they’d love to hear from you, please get in touch via social media: Facebook, St Mary’s Catholic High school; Twitter, @stmarysuk150; or email 150th@ stmaryschesterfield.org.uk.

One copy to give away If you’d like to win a copy of the book, we have kindly been given a signed copy, all you need to do is tell me what year the school opened? Email your entries to paul@s40local.co.uk or write to Paul Chapman, S40 Local, West Studios, Chesterfield College, Infirmary Road, Chesterfield S41 7NG.

Susanne Haywood Artist & Maker Words by Paul Chapman.

“I am driven by the joy of creating objects of beauty that will transcend time. The background to my work is my love for the arts, music and literature, all of which I pursue in my spare time. I have been making quilts for 25 years and I still believe a quilt should warm both body and soul.”

Some artists and creative people have the advantage of being able to earn a living doing what they love, for others their art is a hobby or pastime for enjoyment. For many it’s somewhere in the middle, not the main income but supplementary – they are people who love to make and require an outlet for the work they produce. Susanne Haywood of Chatsworth Road faces this challenge - her first love is for patchwork and quilting, which she started in 1988, and has expanded into a range that features handbags, pictures, paintings and quilts.

Susanne has exhibited in York, Uttoxeter, Birmingham and featured in several trade magazines. She also runs workshops from home to inspire others. Her quilts are many and feature varied themes from gardens to First World War and hand dyed items approached in a traditional way - more art than patchwork. A small item that caught my eye was a painted and embroidered piece around the theme ‘tempus fugit’ a phrase often uttered by my father-in-law, an image of a clock, perhaps suspended or flying. “Inspired by colour and texture, I often find myself stroking the material I use, it’s so beautiful. My ideas come from many places, I get inspired whilst walking my dog. Many of my more recent items are inspired by iconic artists, words and phrases from the likes of Shakespeare, inspiration from Klimt, Beethoven, Schiller” explains Susanne. Page 44 www.s40local.co.uk

Susanne works from a small studio at the back of her home on Chatsworth Road. Much of her time is spent working with Christine White who previously ran Soft Options based at the Forge in Dronfield. Today she works on commissions and together they create pieces, jewellery, bags etc and bounce creative ideas off each other.

Susanne doesn’t retail her work through any shops, she often loads up the car and attends craft fairs and other events locally and her main retail channel is her website susannehaywoodquilts.co.uk

Over the weekend of 8 and 9 November Susanne and Christine will be offering a unique opportunity for you to view her work and perhaps buy some of her pieces – she will be opening up her studio, The Chalet @ B CREATIVE at 667 Chatsworth Road (S40 3PA) between the hours of 10am and 4pm for you to browse, chat and perhaps even have a coffee. With Christmas approaching, this is an exciting opportunity to buy some extra special, hand made Christmas gifts, handbags, bowls, jewellery, pouches, festival bunting, corsages, dolls, pictures and many more beautiful handcrafted items.

It’s Turned Out Nice for The Ukulele. Words and pictures by Paul Frith When I was but a lad (readers beware stories starting with those words) I don’t remember seeing many ukuleles about. Only occasionally I’d catch a glimpse of George Formby (on the telly, I’m not that old) bedecked in his shimmering Jockey’s outfit, shimmering as much as something could shimmer in black and white, and a strange looking instrument cradled in his hands. But despite the lack of colour there was no mistaking George’s cheeky little smile as he played his ukulele for the adoring film extras, who themselves were wearing tight little smiles as they listened again to take 34 of ‘Mister Wu’. It was years later that I was told by those in the know that George mostly played a banjolele. I expect this to be in the days before he dedicated his time to fat free grilling machines (darn my research, the wrong George). This revelation about Mr Formby caused me to review my childhood somewhat and I now conclude that my earliest sighting of the ukulele in all its glory must have been from Elvis Presley in the film Blue Hawaii, as well as a first glimpse of a swathe of swaying hula girls wrapped neatly around the King. Yes...where was I?

Despite the lack of Hula girl hangers on I persevered with the ukulele and still today find myself gathering smiles from folk as I walk through the town carrying the little instrument. On such occasions as these I may be met with a shout out from some joker full of bubbles, ‘Hey hey, turned out nice again’. Sorry George but from now on you will be referred to as the unmentionable ‘F’ word. Hey, hey! One of the appeals for me with this little instrument was the element of surprise that this combination of wood and nylon Page 48 www.s40local.co.uk

could deliver, especially since I had been conditioned to expect maybe a risqué tune or two, a Hawaiian shirt and at the very least a cheeky little Formbyesque smile.

The versatility of the ukulele gives it a surprising and most welcome edge. If you don’t believe me then do one of those search thingies on one of those internet thingies and discover a wealth of ukulele covers from Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody to Nellie the Elephant. Better still have a wander around town, visit your local musical gear shop and marvel at the plethora of sizes, colours and shapes available, and on your own doorstep to boot. Continue your journey through town and into Queens Park and see the teenagers cradling the latest affordable ukuleles. Take notice now. Something is happening here when the younger folks are embracing the ukulele. I think I know what it is. It is a breakthrough of ideas, one in particular, the idea that you can play what you want and not what is expected. Ask the kids toting ukuleles nowadays and they’ll tell you that leaning on a lamppost on the corner of the street has never been so much fun. Notice too an increase in social events and clubs willing to meet and play together just for the fun of it. Hey and if you’re having trouble finding these fun loving ukers then take your new ukulele and stand in the middle of town and start thrashing. I can guarantee that like minded fun loving closet ukers will find you and then? Good times.

Paul Frith Lives in Chesterfield and performs regularly with his ukulele band, Barrelhouse.

Ceramicist Clare Gage How the web is helping a local business to develop Words by Paul Chapman We previously featured an article about the problems faced by small businesses when choosing website development or search engine optimization (SEO) services. As a result Clare Gage, Ceramicist approached SEO Co-Pilot to rebuild her website and improve its ranking in the search engines through optimization.

Clare explained “I have recently become a Mum and I’ve started returning to work, however the focus has changed significantly now I have my son, Peter, to take care of. Like many Mums, I’m starting to work part time and working strange hours to fit in with family life and I just don’t have time to go out and see

Page 50 www.s40local.co.uk

as many people, so I need to focus my efforts online for future sales.” Clare also realised that many customers are making a social connection via facebook, people who like her work are much more likely to buy again and this was evident in the facebook followings she was building up.

In the past she had created her own website and had updated it about two years ago. She chose an off the shelf package that was functional and enabled her to sell her products online, she had dabbled and researched SEO but wasn’t confident, why would she be, after all designing websites isn’t her day job.

She decided to get someone in and turned to her copy of S40 Local, selecting SEO Copilot, Jeff Guest and Guy Tomlinson, who are also working on the redesign of the S40 Local website. Initially they looked at what she had, listened to what she wanted to do and put together a package for her. This was further refined and a solution agreed, “I was also influenced by the costs involved,” outlines Clare, “the solution they were proposing was cheaper to maintain and host than the self build package I’d been using.”

“For me it’s about creating opportunities for people to find me, to find my products and to buy them.” The site has been rebuilt and tailored to Clare’s requirements, something the standard package lacked. Next they spent sometime tailoring and optimizing the site to ensure that when people were looking for products like Clare’s eg: handmade ceramics, the likelihood of Clare’s website being listed in the responses was improved.

“Working with someone skilled in this area really helped. Things change all the time online and I don’t have the time, nor do I really want, to stay up to date with the latest search engine intricacies, that’s what the developers do.”

Clare has kept hold of the social media tasks and is developing her Facebook strategy so she can engage with those who like her work. “This is very much work in progress but Facebook can be useful to someone like me. I looked at Twitter, but I don’t use it as much as Facebook. I think Twitter is better as a business to business tool and not right for me at the moment” says Clare. “I find Facebook quite personal, it’s much closer to the face to face relationships I used to maintain. For me it’s about creating opportunities for people to find me, to find my products and to buy them. However, it’s not hard sell, more about engaging with those creative people that seek me out. When I do shows and stand at fairs people are attracted by either the textiles or the ceramics, when you get them talking the relationship starts I’m hoping I can achieve this online.” Clare’s changes are in their early days, they have only just been completed and there will be work ongoing to make sure her place in search results improves. It will be interesting to catch up again and see how Clare’s business has grown in the online world. You can visit Clare’s website at: http://www. claregage.com, follow her on Facebook at facebook.com/claregagedesign or see her products locally at Created Gallery on Chatsworth Road.

Chatsworth Road Medical Centre PPG: Retirement of Dr Alun Price Ken Davis, chair of the PPG has been in touch to let people know about Alun Price retiring. “Many patients at Chatsworth Road Medical Centre will already know that Dr Alun Price is retiring from the practice after 30 years of service. The Patient Participation Group has worked closely with Dr Price and want to mark his retirement with a few words. Dr Price is well known and respected for his first class work as a GP always caring for patients with a determination to make them well again. He has been a key figure in building the practice and putting patients at the forefront of all that the practice does.

If you have any excess vegetables and no freezer space, we’re still holding our monthly produce swaps for anything you’ve either grown or made yourself (jams, chutneys etc.) at our regular Green Drinks. These are on the first Wednesday of the month at The White Swan, St Mary’s Gate (opposite the church) 7:30pm onwards.

Chesterfield Markets Festival 24th October to 1st November As mentioned and advertised in the last edition of S40 Local, the Chesterfield Markets Festival takes place between 24th October and 1st November. Events are planned all week and details are included in the Festival Programme (as shown below) available in the Chesterfield Tourist Information Centre and various places in and around town.

He will be much missed by patients, colleagues and staff and the Patient Participation Group is indebted to him for both the work and guidance he has provided during the last two years as we have established ourselves as the representatives of all patients. Dr Lucie Scriven has joined the practice in replacement of Dr Price; Dr Debbie Rash has taken maternity leave and Dr Manwal has joined while she is away. Both doctors are already providing the high levels of care that the practice gives to its patients. The photograph shows the Patient Participation Group presenting Dr Price with his retirement gift.

For more information about the practice and the Patient Participation Group please look at our website: www.ourdocs.co.uk/prg1.php”

Article Community News UPDATE : Friends of Somersall Park Here at Friends of Somersall Park we have certainly been busy! Catch up with the news on our facebook page and email newsletter.

We have been building links with local schools and youth groups, and several businesses have offered their support as well. 3rd Brampton Cubs helped out with a litter pick, the amount of litter was unbelievable! Could you help with another litter pick soon? Why not take an extra bag along when you visit the park or get a small group together? You could post a picture on the facebook page to let the wider community know and show the local children (and the council) that we are prepared to help ourselves too! In the pipeline we have tree planting, bulb planting, and a meeting this week with The Derbyshire Wildlife Trust about the possibility of creating a beautiful wildflower meadow area within the park. The council are looking at the bin provision within the park, and also the frequency of emptying the bins too.

Many people (us included!) are concerned about antisocial behaviour within the park. We are working with the police – who have agreed to include the youth shelter and park area in general more regularly in their beat to ensure it is a safe and inclusive place for everyone to enjoy. They asked for us to please report any issues via the nonemergency number. We are forming links with Brookfield School to encourage local teenagers to feel a sense of ownership and are brainstorming ideas to improve the ‘youth shelter’ area. Suggestions welcome! We would love Somersall Park to become a hub of community events. We are hoping to start this off in style with a Christmas Carol Sing Song and Lantern Parade in midDecember – watch this space!

As we go into print, a meeting is planned for 19 October at The Rose and Crown Pub – this date will now have passed but please watch the facebook page, local announcements and of course S40 for upcoming dates and events. We will send meeting minutes to all on our contact list. Page 58 www.s40local.co.uk

As always – if you want to get involved please get in touch! Local businesses – can you support us in return for some positive publicity? Our budget currently is very small and all help is appreciated. Facebook: Somersall Park Friends Emeil: friendsofsomersallpark@gmail.com

Outside containers should be insulated before it gets consistently cold, by wrapping in bubble-wrap. Do this when it’s mild and not frosty, otherwise you’ll just seal in the frost… This is the best time to plant soft fruits (raspberries etc.). Pick a mild day and make sure you don’t bury any frosty soil with the root-ball. Most perennials should now be cut down to ground level, although you can leave those with attractive seeds-heads if they’ve not been made tatty by the wind – grasses can be particularly effective for a few more weeks, and seed-heads can attract birds.

Rake fallen leaves and worm-casts off the lawn. Grass growth will have slowed almost to a halt, although you might need to give the lawn an occasional light trim, especially if there are long mild spells. Clean the mower and, if needed, get it serviced in winter rather than when you might need it in spring. Sow over-wintering vegetables – cabbages, broad beans and peas are just some that will grow much faster in spring if they’ve had the chance to develop roots beforehand.

If you have any brassicas (cabbages, sprouts etc.) pigeons can find them very appealing, so protect them with some netting or fleece; brussel sprouts get topheavy so may need staking to stop them being blown over. Apart from parsnips and swedes, all root vegetables should be lifted by now (although leeks usually withstand frost quite well).

Continue to check any bare soil for germinating weeds and dig them out; it’s normally easier to get out all of a dandelion root if the soil is wet. Digging over vegetable patches can be quite pleasant if the weather is good, with the possible added bonus of a robin watching to see if you turn up any worms. But try to avoid walking on wet soil, as this can compact it meaning you’ll need to dig it again. Prune established apple and pear trees; this can be done any time over winter but early winter days are more likely to be mild and pleasant. Aim for an open, wineglass shape, to allow air to circulate and fruit to form where it will receive maximum light. If you have bird-feeders, keep them topped up (and provide fresh water as well); encouraging foraging birds, especially tits, will help deal with over-wintering pests and their eggs, as well as being great fun to watch.

10. New hedges can be planted using bare-rooted plants, which are much cheaper than those in containers. Get them in the ground as soon as possible after purchase. Page 60 www.s40local.co.uk

Wheels for All Chesterfield Words by Penelope Morgan

“three and four wheeled cycles make it possible to ride when you have impaired balance or loss of sight”

‘Wheels for all Chesterfield’ wants everyone to have the opportunity to ride a bike. “It is wonderful to see the reaction of someone who has never ridden a bike before or who, due to a disability or difficulty, thought they could never ride again” says Michelle Cadet-Rose who manages the project. The Wheels for All Chesterfield hub, based at Queens Park was set up thanks to ‘Aiming High’ funding gained by a partnership of Wheely Fun Wheels, Chesterfield Borough Council and the Derbyshire Schools’ Sports Partnership. They provide a range of bikes for people who would otherwise not have the chance to cycle due to a range of physical disabilities, mental health issues and learning difficulties.

The bikes are used by individuals, community groups, schools and community support groups. Michelle told me about a gentleman who tried out one of the 4 wheeled cycles: “He was a stroke survivor who was unable to speak and he came up to me with a booklet that explained his condition. He was delighted to be able to cycle on a 4 wheel bike using his unaffected leg and arm”. She also talked about a support group for head injury survivors that use the hub. “There are people who used to love cycling and thought they would never be able to ride a bike again because of loss of balance or loss of sight. Our 3 and 4 wheeled cycles make it possible to ride when you have impaired balance. We also have the Roam side by side bike that means you can cycle with a companion, fantastic for people with impaired vision or with attention difficulties”. Possibly the most unusual cycle in the hub is the Velo Plus wheel chair bike. A rider can be secured into the Velo Plus while remaining in their chair – avoiding the need for hoists or lifting.

The hub allows riders to cycle in a safe environment around the cricket pitch at the pavilion. If you have never been on a bike before then this is a great way to start. Michelle is a fully trained instructor for people with disabilities of any kind, so whether you are a beginner or returning to cycling she and the team will be able to help you get going.

Sessions can be arranged in advance for individuals or groups at a cost of £15 per rider per hour. “Sometimes people want to just observe for a while and that is fine” said Michelle. “There is no pressure. It is just wonderful to be able to give people the chance to try something new” If you are interested and want to find out more please contact Michelle at ‘Wheels for All’ on 07857 967484 or email wfachesterfield@ gmail.com Page 62 www.s40local.co.uk
