Intro

Hello and welcome to the December edition of S40 local, the last one to hit your letterbox before 2015 arrives. And wow what a bumper edition it is… every time I thought I had the layout sorted and was happy with things, another advert, classified or email arrived. This has kept us all very busy at the West Studios over the last few weeks. In this edition, I talk to the team at Brampton Picture Framing about their art, we talk local food, local gifts, local writers, local music and I’ve spent some time with Melanie Jackson, one of many public artists helping change the face of cultural Chesterfield for ourselves and our visitors. I’m fairly certain that the woodland fairies will dress the mystery Christmas ‘communitree’ again ready for December, the fir tree that’s decorated by the community, on the path between Somersall Park and Walton Dam. If you want to add your decoration it would be lovely to see it decorated again this year… it’s become a bit of a tradition with us. In addition to the tree this year we have a Lantern Parade and Festive Singing in the park being organised by the Friends of Somersall Park, so get your homemade lanterns ready (no naked flames please!) for the event on 16th December.

As I write Christmas day is just 41 days away. I’m looking forward to closing the doors at S40 Local, switching the phones off for a while and spending some time with the family. I’ll try not to get too caught up in the whole SPEND SPEND SPEND ethos that the season brings with it but when I do spend I’ll try and do so with a small, independent business. Yes, I’m sure I’ll have to step into a retail chain or supermarket but hopefully not as many as I used to, that’s what producing S40 has done to me! Anyway, I can’t wait to see this edition back from print so all that remains is to wish you all a fantastic Christmas, a great New Year and to personally thank every advertiser, the team at S40 Local and every contributor for helping S40 Local to drop through your doors this year. Happy Christmas. Paul and the team at S40 Local.

Brampton Picture Framing Words and pictures by Paul Chapman

The art of framing can transform and enhance an image or object. A frame should compliment and enhance a picture as well as offering protection from the elements and environment.

can-do attitude which leads to him taking on some highly complex jobs.

Right here in Brampton we have a team of professional framers who are among the best in the UK at their art.

Jonathan joined after completing his degree, 2 years in the job he is more than ready to take his exam and James is extremely confident in Jono’s skills and knowledge and fully expects him to pass with flying colours.

The Fine Art Trade Guild (FATG) sets the standards for framing worldwide, and James Ashton from Brampton Picture Framing has recently attained the FATG Advanced Conservation framing qualification. In short that means he has the ability to frame artwork and artefacts up to museum standard. After 8 years of experience, thousands of bespoke framing jobs, exams, and his work being scrutinised in minute detail by highly respected members of the Guild, James has had his skills formally recongnised and is now one of only 11 people worldwide to hold the qualification. Along with James, there are three other skilled framers at Brampton Framing, Callum Draycott, Martin Bower and Jonathan Sargeant. Callum joined at 16 straight from Brookfield School, 6 years on he is a very experienced framer with great skill and a reputation for incredible patience. Callum’s specialism is the framing of fabric artwork and sport shirts. Martin has worked for the business since 14 and joined full time at 18. Martin is well known for his positive Page 4 www.s40local.co.uk

Both Callum and Martin are qualified as Guild commended framers, having passed practical and written exams.

“Conservation framing is about preserving and protecting artwork. You need to consider various factors such as UV light damage, which is irreversible, and can be prevented by the correct framing technique” explains James. “There are many elements to look at when framing a piece of work: mountboards, mounting methods, glazing, varnish finishes, sealing the frame rebate to prevent acid migration from timber frames and the space between the glass and artwork which is so important for pastel pieces.” James is clearly enthusiastic about his work and explained the importance of employing reversible techniques when framing to conservation level. “You should be able to take the piece out of the frame and it should be completely unaffected by the framing process. This means not using irreversible adhesive, there’s no gluing pictures to boards and mounts as this destroys any future value. We need to look at how we can achieve the result whilst maintaining

the integrity and long-term value of any piece. This Brampton based business is also helping promote the area, Liam Jacques, Director said “Our website and level of specialism brings people to us from across the country for framing and whilst they are here, they’ll browse the local shops, drink coffee and eat cake.” “Recently a chap traveled from Preston to have a valuable 150 year old Maddox Brown drawing he’s donating to a museum framed, he was happy to leave it with us secure in the knowledge that it’s in safe hands. But it’s very important to note that we’re not all about museum quality framing” emphasised James, “we provide the whole range of framing services from budget, standard, commended, conservation, right through to museum level framing.” “We tackle every job in the same way every job is important. It’s important for us to understand what the piece means to the customer and how much they want to pay, so we can recommend an appropriate solution. People are often surprised that we can still be so competitive on pricing and this is down to the relationship we have with our suppliers which we have developed and strengthened for over eight years or more now.” Brampton Picture Framing is found in Brampton Courtyard, tucked away behind the houses on Old Hall Road, between the Morrison’s roundabout and the Rose and Crown pub. In addition to the team of four framers there are, Lily Hammond, Bronwen Ashton, and Sophie Bland who work on customer service and dispatch. Josh Raine and Ian Bower work in dispatch and have recently started framing, Pete Sharman keeps tabs on the invoices and finances and Liam Jacques heads up the business. “We have a great team here”, says Liam. People are very committed and care about what they do, the business has moved on a long way since myself, Pete and James started out. We have a clear plan of where we want to be and all the team understand their role in getting there.” I hope the team enjoy their journey and yet again after meeting a local business, I came away impressed! The Joy... of Christmas Food Shopping! Words by Paul Chapman

So with all the Christmas cards posted and the presents wrapped, you’ll be sitting carefully planning what you’re going to eat over the Christmas holidays? Whether a traditional dinner or an alternative, the shops will be closed for a day so you’ll need to get stocked up! If you’re not relishing the tussle at the checkouts and wrestling over the last mince pie why not take a local independent approach to shopping? Highfield House Farm Shop are now taking their For every £1 spent with Christmas Orders a small or medium-sized business 63p stays in the and can supply local economy, compared not only Turkeys, Hams for roasting, to 40p with a larger Beef, Lamb, Pork business. and the usual joints, you can also order pigs in blankets, pork pies, cheeses, cream, eggs, milk … and a whole host of products sourced from the local area. We can’t assure you there’ll be no queue when you go and collect it, but we can assure you a very pleasant view from the shop window, friendly and helpful staff and a much more cheerful experience than you’d get in the supermarket… plus if it all gets too much for you the lovely café next door is the perfect place to recharge your batteries.

Food for thought!

A couple of stops on Chatsworth Road will see your local independent shopping basket starting to look very tasty indeed: Brampton Brewery shop, on the Chatsworth Road Business Park will see you well stocked with their local bottled real-ales, whiskey, wine, cheeses, chutneys and even ale inspired cakes. WIN: Chesterfield FC v Bradford Tickets

Fancy free tickets to Chesterfield FC’s game against Bradford on Saturday 13th December 2014? The guys at NAPIT (sponsors of Chesterfield FC) have kindly given S40 Local a pair of tickets for the game. To win the tickets all you have to do is look through the pages of this edition and spot a small picture of a ball, hidden discretely on one of the pages. The ball isn’t large, but then competitions aren’t supposed to be easy. Once you’ve found the ball let us know where it is, email us at paul@s40local. co.uk or post your entries to: NAPIT COMPETITION S40 Local West Studios (Studio 1) Chesterfield College Infirmary Road Chesterfield S41 7NG You don’t have time to hang around on this one as the closing date is Monday 8th December to enable me to get the tickets to you on time.

WON: #ilovecrf

In the Autumn edition we launched a Twitter competition to help market and promote the Chatsworth Road Festival. All that was required was to tweet a picture or thought about the festival using the tag #ilovecrf. I think we found Twitter isn’t that popular with our readers. However from the small number of entries received we have drawn Robyn Jane out of the hat. Congratulations to Robyn who wins S40’s prize of £100 to be spent at one or more businesses along Chatsworth Road.

CELEBRATING 150 YEARS

LEONIE MARTIN

Congratulations to Patricia Armstrong-Read who will shortly be receiving a copy of the commemorative book about St Mary’s Catholic High School. The book, kindly donated by the school, was written by local author Leonie Martion and covers 150 years of the school’s history in Chesterfield. We received answers that gave either one of two dates, the year the original school opened and the year the school opened on the site at Newbold. As the question was a little vague we accepted either, the official date being 30th January 1865. Thanks to all who entered and enjoy your book Patricia.

Best taken with a pinch of salt He never saw it coming, but she did. As she stood behind the counter of the shop, she calmly watched him through the window. The panes in the glass door were still recovering from his deliberate slam. He paused at the kerbside, glancing distractedly, in the direction of the traffic. He stepped out into the road, ebullient in his gait, his mobile phone already pressed to his ear, probably ringing her to proclaim that the deed was done. He seemed oblivious to the tanker that turned the corner, the words ‘Saxa Table Salt’ emblazoned on its side. She could have shouted, but she didn’t. Instead, she just stared as the tanker veered towards the wrong side of the road, trying to avoid the ginger cat that had darted in front of it. He was laughing as he turned, too late, to see the errant vehicle. In those elongated seconds she saw his expression change to one of terror. He put up his hand in a last futile gesture, before the tanker smacked into him. She could not see what happened after the impact, but she knew. The metal giant swayed and then lurched onto its side, sliding along the road with a metallic scream, despatching everything in its path. Its contents spilled out, creating a macabre snow scene. Fortunately, for the other inhabitants of Brampton that is, the vehicle and its wreckage came to rest a little further along the road, missing the shop altogether and avoiding any further mortal damage. It was still seasoning everything in its immediate vicinity, the salt acting as the antidote to the stench of car fumes and burned brake pads. She looked at the brown paper envelope on the desk in front of her. He had been jubilant in its delivery. Opening the flap she briefly stared at the papers within. Then she leaned under the desk and slowly fed the sheets into the shredder below. She smiled as the tiny strips of paper curled out from beneath the metal teeth. There would be no divorce now. She could play the grieving widow well. She pondered on his love of salt. She had always said it would be the death of him.

Article Advertorial

I have heard there are troubles of more than one kind. Some come from ahead and some come from behind. But I’ve bought a big bat. I’m all ready you see. Now my troubles are going to have troubles with me! Dr

Seuss

We have all heard parents and grandparents say of their youngsters...’’They are having ‘trouble’ with their maths or ‘trouble’ with their English at school’’ Dr. Seuss (and Kip ) have the answer, a big bat!! Well, here at Kip, we pride ourselves on bringing out that ‘’big bat’’ for our students and we then help them bat away their challenges in Maths and English! It is part of our Kip Culture! We believe that (in the words of Robert Kennedy) ‘’Only those who dare to fail greatly, can ever achieve greatly’’. We encourage our students to see mistakes as opportunities to learn, rather than as a problem. For us, learning should be fun, even when it gets tricky! Our tutors are here to encourage, challenge, support and guide – and they play a mean game of bingo! Kip’s techniques mirror some advice from Barack Obama “Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a sign of strength. It shows you have the courage to admit when you don’t know something, and then allows you to learn something new.’’ Students are encouraged to ask their Kip tutor about current school work. Our lesson plans are flexible enough to be changed in seconds and we want students to know that we will listen to them. We also listen to their parents as we value their input and after all they know their children best! Parents get feedback at the end of every session and are an integral part of the team’s success. We at Kip are committed to making sure that every child meets their full potential, whether it is a grade C or an A*, their progress is our

goal. We fully subscribe to the notion that If the child can’t learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn. So, if that means a child needs to learn working on a laptop and sitting on the floor, then that’s okay! So it all starts with an initial assessment which is free and from where we start to put together an individual learning plan. Jo will be happy to have a chat on 01246 220224 about providing a Kip individually programmed ‘‘big bat’’ for your child and a fantastic Kip tutor to help them wield it to success!

‘Every childhood is worth fighting for’ Supporting our 9 to 11 year olds Words by Nicola Chapman. Recent child abuse revelations have brought many of us up short – we’ve perhaps believed it is something that happens elsewhere, but recent cases have been closer to home than we’d care to believe. In fact NSPCC research brings it closer still, showing that on average two children in every primary school classroom are suffering from abuse or neglect and the majority of cases go undetected. For over 28 years Childline, run by the NSPCC has been giving children somewhere to turn, but research has identified a gap. Concern about the low number of calls from younger children between 9 and 11 years has led to the development of the Childline Schools Service. Carol Knock explained “9 to 11 years old is a vulnerable and impressionable age, and we know it’s when grooming starts. A child who is feeling isolated or lonely at school can be a particular target.” The Childline schools service trains volunteers to deliver an assembly to year 5 and 6 children, and to return a week later to run an interactive workshop to educate children about abuse. “We explain how children have a right to feel happy and safe, and we explore things that might stop some children feeling like this. We talk about what is and isn’t acceptable and appropriate, and teach them how to protect themselves against abuse and where to get help and support if they need it, how to ‘speak out’ to a trusted adult or to ChildLine. Carol, who lives in Brookside, has been supporting the NSPCC for 6 years, previously as a speaker, ChildLine counsellor and fundraiser, and more recently delivering the ChildLine school service and training other volunteers. She’s one of a team of 24 volunteers going into primary schools across Derbyshire. Carol is also featured in the national campaign poster to promote the service – having been selected by a panel of under 18 years olds as the face of the campaign. Page 42 www.s40local.co.uk

Carol and the team have visited local schools and aim to revisit every two years to make sure they speak to and support all children at a vulnerable age. ‘The School Service has fantastic fully tested resources, interactive material and video footage that we use in class room sessions to ensure young people understand the support that ChildLine can offer. They can even watch the video at home on the website www. childline.org.uk/buddy. I’ve seen it many times and still find it impressive, ” explained Carol. Childline and School Services are expensive to run and are fully funded by donations and charitable support, the Derbyshire fundraising committee would love some more support either from people wanting to join the existing committee or interested in setting up their own committee with people they know and with similar interests. If you’d like to get involved as a fundraiser or a volunteer you can find out more on their website www.nspcc.org.uk If you are concerned about any child there’s also a line for adults to report concerns for any children in the community the number is - 0808 800 500.

Music Scene

Music Scene Words by Paul Chapman.

It seems as though there has been an explosion of talent on to the Chesterfield Music scene, having had no music news for some time, three bands / artists have approached me to share their latest releases; Parka, David Lacey and Gaz Simmonds.

Parka: Big Ego Describing themselves as an ‘Indie’ pop band, Parka have existed in their current line up for 6 months, playing together around the Chesterfield and Sheffield area, most recently performing at the Stand Road firework display in front of a 10,000 strong crowd. Parka are Casey Lowry, lead vocals and rhythm guitar; Billy Hewitt, lead guitar and backing vocals; and Jezza Edgington on bass guitar. Also, the newest member of Parka; Tom Barker who plays the drums. Their recently recorded ‘Big Ego’ has enjoyed airtime on BBC’s Dean Jackson’s introducing show, they’ve been interviewed and played live on Peak FM and have enjoyed playing at the Leadmill in October. You can catch Parka live at the Leadmill again on December 7th. They’re headlining their own gig to launch their new EP consisting of three tracks, ‘Woahh’, ‘Thrills and Pills’ and ‘Friend’. “We can’t get over how well our first single ‘Big Ego’ has done. Literally a year ago we were getting ridiculed as a band in and out of school, for doing what we loved. Now we have a track that’s been described as ‘a sparkling start’, ‘hook-laden indie pop at its infectious best’ and ‘an incontestably catchy little anthem’ by reviewers” says Casey. “Dean Jackson from BBC Introducing said ‘he really liked it’ and it’s been heard and commented on by Nick Knowles. It still has a solid 5 star review on ITunes. Parka says “we’d like to say thank you to everyone who likes what we’re doing. Moral Don’t give up. If anyone gives you ****, prove them wrong.” Check out Parka on soundcloud.com/ parkaofficial or follow on twitter at WeAreParka. Page 46 www.s40local.co.uk

David Lacey : Concrete Rivers

Seed Creative network describes David Lacey as ‘one of the UK’s freshest and most promising talents. A gifted singer/songwriter with the most powerful and emotive voice you’ll ever hear. A multi-instrumentalist, David has spent his time exploring how different music is performed around the world and brought it all together in his own writing style. His feel-good acoustic pop songs harbour heartfelt lyrics that tell tales of fleeting romance, hope and escapology. See him perform live and you’ll find an uncontrollable smile on your face and an unforgettable tune in your head.’ An accolade indeed. David is a Chesterfield lad and his love for music emerged aged 13, when he found his Dad’s rusty old acoustic guitar, he quickly figured out how to play the riff to Deep Purple’s ‘Smoke on the Water’ and remembers an immediate realisation that he wanted to be a musician. David has enjoyed time in the limelight and performed over 150 times last year including supporting acts like Dodgy and Dave McPherson (InMe) and has played at Earls Court and the NEC. His debut mini album ‘Concrete Rivers’ was released on iTunes & Amazon earlier in the year and his CD is available at Tallbird Records on Soresby Street. David has also featured on BBC introducing where two of his original songs have been broadcast. David has seven videos available on youtube. com, search for David Lacey. You can also see him locally Performing at The Peacock, Chatsworth Road, Brampton from 8:45pm on Friday 5 December.

‘The Growth’ of Melanie Jackson Words by Paul Chapman.

One of my new neighbours in the West Studios at Chesterfield College is the artist and designer Melanie Jackson.

We caught up to discuss Growth, as well as Melanie’s next commission and working life in the West Studios.

Melanie creates public artwork and you are likely to be familiar with one of her most recent projects. It’s called Growth, and now greets people at the Hornsbridge island as they arrive in Chesterfield from the M1.

I don’t envy Melanie: artwork divides opinion and to put your work out there on display for all to see takes guts. Personally, I love it. Now with subtle lighting and with the whole installation complete, the Growth installation makes a bold, positive statement as you arrive

Page 54 www.s40local.co.uk

in town and, as Melanie explains, “every facet of the design has Chesterfield as its inspiration.”

sculpture is anchored to the past, but at the same time clearly looks forward to the future”.

Melanie’s involvement with the project started when she was approached by a landscape architect she’d worked with previously to ask if she wanted to bid jointly for the nationally advertised commission.

Growth was one of four ideas, by different designers, put to a vote by Chesterfield Borough Council, the public, the Chesterfield Champions and Barratt Homes, the developers who part funded the project. The remaining 50% of the finances were provided by a matchfunding grant from the European Regional Development Fund. These funds were ring-fenced for art to improve the gateway into town.

“I started to research the history of Chesterfield, the mining, fabrication works, steel works, potteries, the national successes like the channel tunnel cutting machine, and identified the wheel as running through all these elements”, explains Melanie. “I wanted to portray this in Growth’s design, rising, growing from the ground”. “It’s also based on the flower of a Pomegranate, as appears on Chesterfield’s coat of arms, with eight petals representing the eight community areas of Chesterfield. It is an installation that feels uplifting, the

Melanie studied at Norton College in Sheffield before going to Liverpool to complete her degree in design. The course was multimedia based covering wood, metal, ceramics, textiles and she chose to specialise in furniture design. After college Melanie started working with public sculptor Stephen Broadbent

Please mention S40 Local · Page 55

Article in Liverpool. She concentrated on designing the street furniture (seating, signage, fences etc.) that sat alongside the sculptures. One of her larger projects was Ellesmere Port and was influenced by the sea and by the industry of the area. After seven years working with Stephen she spent a further seven years working for a number of consultancy practices, in Chester and later Chesterfield. Once her children reached school age Melanie decided to work for herself and was based at home until moving into West Studios in July, a chance opportunity she found on the Destination Chesterfield website as she researched her next commission, ‘The Spirit of Saltergate’.

‘The Spirit of Saltergate’ The Spirit of Saltergate will shortly join Growth on the Chesterfield art scene. Melanie’s latest work was selected from proposals by three designers and her submission was on a single sheet of A4 paper. “I didn’t submit a design drawing, I talked instead about how the final piece should be put together with the support of the local residents, the supporters club, the club and the fans. I wanted to take a different approach to the other bids”, explains Melanie. “Peter Whitely from Chesterfield FC supporters club had been developing an idea for the artwork to include an interactive multimedia experience. This would depict key moments in the history of the club and also needed incorporating into the design using quick codes.” The ‘Spirt of Saltergate’ is again funded by Barratt Homes who redeveloped the old football stadium site. It celebrates the history of Saltergate, the home of Chesterfield FC for 139 years until the ground closed in 2010. The final work will be installed on the junction of Saltergate and West Street, another key gateway into town. “The design has been presented to fans and supporters and feedback has been fantastic. The sculpture will be built and installed by Chris Bramall who also produced the Hornsbridge sculpture. It’s due to be finished by the end of November and installed on site during Page 56 www.s40local.co.uk

early December”, says Melanie. “The final design features a scene from the pitch invasion that took place during the last game, including a young lad who went onto the pitch in a wheelchair.” Many people will be eager to see a fitting tribute to the old home of Chesterfield FC. Although the new stadium is more suited to modern times, it was also a sad day when the club left its old home for the last time, so it is good to know that there will be a creative reminder to ensure that the ‘Spirit of Saltergate’ lives on. Article Business News Toad Sponsors Cricketer Ben Slater Toad Footwear is sponsoring Ben Slater, a local Chesterfield cricketer who has just signed a two year professional contract with Derbyshire County Cricket Club – and previously worked at Toad part time. Kitting him out with a sign written Mini Cooper ... with Toad’s logo of course. Drage from Toad has played for Chesterfield with Ben for over 10 years and has seen him progress to be a full time cricketer. His two year contract (signed in October) was well deserved. Laura explained “We really wanted to help him out, everybody needs a little support at some point and I think doing this for him gave him that extra confidence to feel that people do really believe that he’s good enough and can make a career out of it. Travelling to Derby everyday he was desperate for a car and for us it’s an opportunity to get our brand name out there.” Check out the derbytelepgraph website to see what he achieved at the end of the season.

10 Garden Things

Words by Colin Harrison

1.

If you have a pond with fish in it, make sure it never freezes over completely (but don’t break ice by hitting it, which may well hurt the fish); a rubber ball can be floated in it to make a nice hole.

2.

Keep an eye on any stored produce, bulbs and tubers to make sure the mice haven’t found them. Hanging them in a sack is usually a good way of both storing and protecting them, but remember that mice are amazing climbers.

3.

This is the time of year to plan for next, with seed and nursery catalogues. Don’t be overambitious though – only plan for plants where there’s space, or steal yourself to removing under-performing ones (or dig them out on a nice day, which will allow time for the soil to settle before spring).

4.

If it snows heavily, knock it off or gently shake branches to prevent them breaking under the weight. Try not to stand underneath while you do this!

5.

Check to see if any paths, fences etc. need routine maintenance, and prepare to do it on any nice sunny, dry days. Also clean and (where applicable) sharpen tools; book the lawnmower in for a service.

6.

Winter is the best time to dig heavy ground, incorporating manure or compost. If you have a decent sized area, don’t try to do it all at once - you’ve got a good couple of months to finish it all.

7.

Keep everywhere clear of debris, which can harbour diseases and harmful organisms. But try not to be too fussy; old logs and piles of leaves tucked away somewhere are excellent over-wintering spots for essential wildlife.

8.

If buying growing plants as Christmas presents, even the short journey from the shop to the car can damage them if the weather is cold, so make sure they’re well-wrapped. The same applies when delivering them to the recipient.

If you want to get children interested in gardening, there are lots of books (and even tools) aimed at different age ranges which would make good presents. Never be too dogmatic about when and how things need to be done – don’t insist on dragging them outside in the cold and wet to do something just because it’s the ‘correct’ time of year. Plants can’t read calendars…

10. Reduce the watering of houseplants, and mist them regularly to stop them drying out in the central heating. The ideal is to keep them clustered together in an unheated but light room.

I’m looking for a home for my collection of ‘The Garden’, the magazine of the Royal Horticultural Society. I have (I think complete) issues running from June 1985 up to December 2013 – those up to 1998 are all in binders, the others are in boxes. These are free to anyone who would like to collect them. All proceeds go to local charities; the pantomimes are written and directed by local DCHS Health Visitor Imelda Cole. Stage-managed by local DCHS electrician Mick Wiltshier and their exquisite costumes are sewn by local retired Hospice nurse Pat Bown. Kaye Gilbert is this year’s very talented musical director and choreographer. Sinbad will be their 26th performance and they have raised a whopping £64,000 for charity over the years.
