Intro
Happy New Year and welcome to the first edition of 2015.
I hope you enjoyed your Christmas and the snow, perfectly timed for the post Boxing Day fun - sledging in the fields, snowman and igloo building, and your travel plans weren’t upset.
We talk about New Year Resolutions in this edition and ways to help us stick to them. It’s difficult to stay upbeat with all the glum news around, so my New Year Resolution is very simple... to be more positive. I was in danger of letting news from round the globe creep into my introduction this month, but if it’s bad news you’re after there are plenty of other places you can get them from, so I’ll avoid it. We’re also hearing that we’re changing the way we shop and this change is being blamed for the downturn in Tesco’s fortunes. Apparently long gone is the large weekly shop. I can remember this as a child, Thursday night pushing the trolley round whichever store Mum and Dad chose. Today we buy small quantities and we shop often – I can see fruit and veg shops coming back to the high street if this carries on! We start this month with business news from Penk Insurance, StraightCurves, Wings Photography, the Rose & Crown and Qdos Creates. We have tips to keep your resolutions going, news on the 2015 Marathon dates, tree planting and the lantern parade in Somersall Park, plus all the regular stuff... with a new look ‘What’s On’. Closer to home at S40 Local we start the new year launching our new website S40Local.co.uk together with launching our own design and web services, partnering with the developers we’ve worked with on our site. Last thing... thanks to Nicola Harris for a couple of great photographs used in this month’s edition, one on the cover and one on the New Years article.
I hope you enjoy this edition. If you’ve anything to tell us, there are things you’d like to see more or less of or articles and photos you’d like to contribute, please get in touch. Paul Chapman T: 07764 801080 E: paul@s40local.co.uk

Penk Insurance Putting customer service back into your insurance Words & pictures: Paul Chapman
I
t’s generally not until the insurance renewal letter drops through the letter box, that I am reminded that one of my insurance renewals is due, be it for the house, car, van or business. Even though I get the reminders in advance, it’s a task I will often leave until the last minute and find myself rushing to get the best price whilst not being confident that I have the right policy that fully meets all my needs. When you search on the internet,it’s very confusing with lots of assumptive questions and hidden excesses and clauses. Any of these could catch you out in the event of a claim. Even though you may specify the amount you want to insure, some insurers will give you £60,000 contents whilst another will give you £100,000. Some may take into account the distance from a stream or river, whether the house is in a mining area etc, whilst others don t seem to care. Once I have a list of options I generally scroll down to the price, and then plump for an insurer whose name I recognise! Until now I haven’t considered going ‘local’ to get help with my insurance needs, that is until Penk Insurance approached me. They are a local company, staffed and managed by local people and are conveniently found on Chatsworth Road,

on the corner of Chester Street (next to the Royal Oak pub). It is a grey building with tinted windows, and I have often driven past, wondering what was hidden behind the dark glass. Penk Insurance has been in business since 1988 and has been located at 49-53 Chatsworth Road for approximately 15 years. Behind the glass frontage David and Jenny Penk, who live in Walton, have a friendly and experienced team of 12 individuals who are talking to clients both in person and via the telephone, guiding them through the insurance process and helping them to find the best deal. This in itself has to be more appealing than having an electronic and faceless experience, and at the end of it not getting the best deal. David Penk has worked in insurance since leaving school and after being threatened with redundancy he decided to ‘go it alone’ and began to slowly build up his now successful business. After the birth of their second daughter, his wife, Jenny joined the business to help David with its growth and further development. David comments: “We started out offering all types of insurance including Car, Home, Travel, Commercial Vehicles and Business. We soon identified that as these markets were becoming highly competitive, we needed to find a niche and began to specialise in the taxi/commercial motor sectors. This specialisation has now enabled us to develop further and grow all areas and we now have a very comprehensive list of insurers allowing for a ‘one stop’ experience. We can cover your car, provide breakdown cover, your home and its contents, your business and liabilities and help you to arrange

specified or not needed. Home insurance is typically a product where we could save clients a substantial amount of money. For example - after deciding to shop around, a new client very recently decided to give us a try for home insurance after being with his existing company for many years. We were able to insure him with Liverpool Victoria (LV=), at a cost of £137.00 giving him a saving £293.00, against his current renewal invite quoting £430.00”.

• 24hr claim helplines • Low policy excesses • Optional personal posses ions cover Jenny and David are obviously very proud of their team and have employed people who are local and very familiar with the risk area. Rather than the internet or call centre experience, Nikki, Jason, Jim, Charlotte, Charlie, Laura, Lawrence and Gina can look out of the office window to understand what the weather in Chesterfield has done to damage your home or car, understand the local traffic problems and potential flooding areas (remembering what happened in 2007)! David was very keen to point out the benefits of that ‘personal service’.
“We have over 120 years combined insurance knowledge within the office. Web products are assumptive based and this can have a negative effect on the price and quality of products chosen. It’s very easy to answer a question wrong or get lead into selecting products that are over
This strikes a particular chord with me. We were recently stung on our house insurance and I can’t help thinking that if I had contacted a broker, that the matter would have been resolved, giving me a personal service and also potentially saving me money! The deciding factor for many of us will of course come down to price. I don’t need much convincing that having someone local to find me the best insurance deal is better than my session with a comparison site. So when my next insurance policy is due for renewal, I’ll be putting Penk Insurance to the test and if they are comparable on product and price, for me, they will win hands down.

#HNY2015 Words: Paul Chapman Photography: Nicola Harris
A
s January the first arrives, conversations about New Year resolutions begin. A quick view of the internet suggests a third of us make a resolution or two and a survey (Wikipedia) suggests over half of us don’t even make it through the first week, and just 8% of us achieve them long term.
We’re already three weeks into 2015, a good time to take stock. If you made resolutions perhaps you’re doing brilliantly at them… but if not why not take time to review them and give them a bit of a kick start? The main things we resolve to change are to… lose weight, stay in touch, quit smoking, save money, reduce stress, volunteer, learn a new skill, cut back on drink, eat or sleep better and travel more.
Whatever you choose, it’s time to make some plans - opposite are some hints and tips. Looking through S40 Local makes me realise we’ve little excuse to let our resolutions lapse. There’s so much locally to inspire and support us.
We’ve community groups offering a whole host of events covering many hobbies, sports, passions and age groups. So if you’re looking to meet new people, learn something new or take up exercise check out the what’s on and regular events pages and book or enquire about something you’re interested in.
If you want to get involved in a community project there are loads of groups doing fantastic things locally to improve the area – flick through some old copies of the magazine or go online and browse old editions. Our local groups always welcome a new face, new ideas, skills and talents or an extra pair of hands. Page 18 www.s40local.co.uk
We have a vast array of businesses who can support you with home improvements. Maybe you want to save money and cut down on bills, install solar panels perhaps? This is the time when people think about their long term investments, so consider one of our local companies to give your finances a much needed health check.
And talking of health, look after yourself, cycle to work, book yourself in for a health and beauty treatment or a new hair cut.
Whatever you’re planning, sneak an extra resolution on your list: to support the local independent businesses at the same time. So check out the tips below to help you keep your resolutions. 6 Tips for Making and Keeping Your New Years Resolutions:
1. Make your resolution positive: Go for “I’d like to feel fitter and be healthier” rather than “I’d like to lose weight.” “I’d like to save money for a holiday” rather than “I’m going to spend less.”
2. Be specific: “I’m going to run three times a week for 30 mins” rather than “I’m going to start running.”
3. Take small steps: Plan your goals for the first week or two and make them achievable.
4. Take action today: What can you do now to move closer to your goal... make an appointment, book a session, make email contact, get out and get moving. 5. Don’t give up: Don’t let one set back put an end to it, refocus and start again. 6. Celebrate your successes: In a helpful way. Don’t plan to eat a cream bun as a reward for your weight loss. Good Luck and Happy New Year.

It creates 25-50 vibrations per second forcing the body’s kinetic chain to respond each time. This improves stabilisation, coordination, strength and endurance. These high tech machines transmit waves of energy throughout the body making muscle fibres contract, which enhances coordination and the efficiency of the muscles and nerves. The vibrations create instability that forces the body to respond with multi-directional contractions which tone, strengthen and burn calories.
The Benefits: • Immediate improvements in blood circulation • Increased muscle strength and flexibility • Increased joint range of motions • Decreased cellulite • Increased bone mineral density • Reduced pain and soreness • Faster recovery and regeneration from injury during training • Enhanced metabolism & lymphatic flow, reductions in cortisol (stress hormone) • Little impact on the joints and ligaments • Capacity for whole body massage and relaxation • Increases the production of collagen to encourage firmer, smoother skin • Helps prevent age-related muscle loss, bone density loss and skin wrinkles • People with medical conditions can exercise while working within their personal physical limitations • Helps prevent injuries through enhanced muscle awareness and control. Brampton Brewery’s
New Look Rose & Crown Words: Paul Chapman
As the fifth anniversary approaches of Brampton Brewery taking on their first pub, The Rose & Crown on Old Road, Brampton, the team decided it was time to give the pub a bit of a makeover. Shortly before Christmas you may have noticed a large number of white vans parked outside. These were a whole bunch of tradesmen who have worked through the pub from top to bottom to give it a new fresh look. As well as a full internal redecoration, they’ve changed some of the seating, put in a new bar front and bar back, updated the lighting and changed some of the pictures and photos.
Mat Randall, landlord, explained “when Chris and the team at Brampton Brewery first opened the Rose & Crown it was completely refurbished, but pubs are subject to a lot of wear and tear and it was starting to look a little tired and in need of an update. “Structurally the layout remains the same, we have the tap room and the large open bar complete with open fire and intimate booths but the decor has given it a much warmer, homely feel. “People have been really positive about it, which is great and we’ve been really busy, as we reopened two weeks before Christmas.”
I agree with Mat, there is a warmer, cosier feel to the pub. The pub has a Quiz Night on Tuesday night, Music Quiz on the last Sunday of the month and a whole host of events throughout the year such as at the annual St Georges Day Beer Festival in April. If you’ve not been in for a while, the warm fire and local ales might tempt you in on a cold winter’s night in the near future. You can be sure of a friendly welcome from Mat and the team. Are you left with a nagging feeling that they aren’t quite where they need to be? Are they anxious and frustrated with you too?! Here at Kip our experienced tutors offer a free assessment. So what can you expect? Our assessments provide a thorough and accurate reflection of your child’s abilityboth areas of confidence and weakness. We will be very specific, right down to exactly which sums they can do and which they can’t. This is true for Maths skills from primary to GCSE level. By highlighting specific areas of weakness and gaps, we can ensure an individual learning plan is focused and targeted to meet individual needs. Children enjoy the assessments because they always find they can do more than they thought in a no-pressure environment with a supportive 1:1 process. It promotes an interesting discussion with the child about their views on their own ability and how they feel- allowing the process of building self-esteem to begin right from the start. A lack of self-esteem is a major block to learning. The assessment allows the tutor to gain an insight into how the child views themselves, their achievements and their individual learning style. All of which is used to put together our recommendations. As part of every Maths assessment we also test reading levels. Reading ability can be a major block to succeeding with Maths. Children struggling to read questions are put off trying the Maths, which they may well be able to do, resulting in them failing to reach their true potential. So for a new start in the new year, call Jo on 01246 220224 for a FREE assessment and get your child on the road to achieving their true potential!

New Home for 2015
creative Words: Paullearning Chapman
K
aren Rogers is a bit of a whirlwind, her new business StraightCurves opened in December 2013 and featured in S40 Local.
Since then Karen’s been busy, very busy. Her energy is catching and she sweeps people along with her, enthusiastic in every discussion, plans being hatched and ideas tweaked and developed ready to be delivered. Her business StraightCurves opened just 13 months ago, a creative hub and space in the newly refurbished office suites above Chesterfield’s Market Hall and already they’re on the move, having taken a short trip to a new home at 104 Saltergate, directly opposite the old Chesterfield Football Club ground. I caught up with Karen to have a look round and meet Roz Vincent the new addition to the team. Karen explained the reasons for the move; “The space at the Market Hall was great to get us going but I was rapidly requiring more space. I was restricted to holding a single course at any one time due to the open plan space, so it was either a young creative session working with Jumping Clay or an adult’s crochet class for instance. Also, with no shop front people simply couldn’t see we were there, I wanted to be more visible.
“We stumbled across the building at 104 Saltergate and after a quick reccy it was clear to me that it would be a fantastic new creative space.”
Open 10am - 4pm weekdays Page 34 www.s40local.co.uk
Karen looked around for funding to help with the project and, with the help of a Global Derbyshire Grant, the building has been completely refurbished to be fully accessible to all. The refurb has also created office space for two other small businesses who moved in to the top floor of the building during December - In the Works PR and eBusiness Works. The expansion of StraightCurves has led to the creation of a new full time role and Roz Vincent now works with Karen helping to manage the studios and assisting Karen with all tasks from making cuppas to penguins!
Entering the building to meet the pair, I was greeted with the smell of a delicious homemade butternut squash and pinenut risotto – sitting around the table chatting. Eating and making pretty much sums up what StraightCurves is all about!
“The move came about pretty quickly” Karen explained, “I was told by various people there was no way we’d be open and trading before Christmas. Well it’s 15 December and the building was officially opened on 6th December by the Mayor Cllr Alexis Diouf. “It was especially fitting, as 6 December was Small Business Saturday” added Karen, “On the day we were also visited by Shadow Minister for Small Business, and local MP Toby Perkins, who commented ‘It’s really great to see so much craft-based entrepreneurial activity on Small Business Saturday.”
104 Saltergate, Chesterfield, S40 1NE
As mentioned earlier, the top floor is occupied by eBusiness works - winners of the Derbyshire Times Business Idea of the Year award, offering Social Media management and In The Works PR. Anna Melton from In The Works is delighted with the new space. StraightCurves offers courses and workshops in over 25 different creative media, as well as toddler storytelling, after school clubs, children’s parties, talks to community groups, social crafting, a small business club to assist new businesses looking to start up or expand and much more. They have a range of products and gifts for sale from local makers, for example Gwinn Kerry, jewellery maker, based at West Studios at Chesterfield College, Liz and Kate Pope who have written and illustrated a range of wonderful children’s books and local textile artist Miss Nova.
“We’ll be selling more products in the future, such as our own range of arts and crafts kits - they’ll be much more to offer than just crafts and we’d love people to call in and take a look at what we do, we have already had lots of people popping in to see us, which is great!” Karen enthuses. If you fancy a look around, StraightCurves is open between 10am and 4pm Monday to Friday. The official opening of the Hallway Gallery is on 30 January from 7pm. During the evening, there will be an eclectic mix of local artists’ work and crafts for sale, with no charges for artists displaying their work - please feel free to wander in and see for yourself.
I came away with the phrase “a warm and welcome place to meet and create” in mind… erm S40 Local now offering free straplines!

Top to bottom: StraightCurves new home at 104 Saltergate; Official opening day; doing what they do best... making!
If you glance through the windows on a winter’s evening, the bright displays of wool and crafts can be seen in the downstairs studio. In addition, StraightCurves has a sewing studio, an office space, together with a fully accessible toilet, and on the first floor a large dedicated children’s studio and kitchen area. This creates three flexible spaces enabling them to run simultaneous courses, and the rooms are also available to rent from as little as £8/hr by small clubs and community groups.

Believe in yourself! Qdos Creates expands into Chesterfield Words: Penelope Morgan
W
ith a range of creative activities and interventions as varied as the people they work with and the social issues they tackle, Qdos Creates, together with Barnados Leaving Care Service launch their first Chesterfield based programme in January. Qdos Creates is based in West Studios, Chesterfield and have been delivering performances, workshops and accredited courses regionally and nationally for young people and adults since 1995. The ten week Chesterfield course called “Believe in Yourself” is for young people who are moving on from the care system
in Derbyshire. The workshops are co financed by the European Social Fund and the Skills Funding Agency and managed by Futures Advice, Skills and Employment. The workshops are designed to build self-esteem and confidence to support the difficult transition from the care system into independence and employment.
This may be their first work in town but they are otherwise very well-travelled as Anjie Taylor, Artistic Director, explained: “We have toured with performances and workshops for all ages, in many different settings across the country to deliver our mission of using the arts as a tool for social change.”
At Qdos they run a vast range of creative interventions including participatory workshops, projects and performances each tailored to the specific needs or theme of the audience. As well as the ‘Believe in Yourself’ workshop, in Barnsley they run ‘Relax and Revive’, a chance for carers to take time out and an opportunity for them to relax and recharge their batteries in a friendly atmosphere. The sessions introduce relaxation techniques and fun creative activities to promote wellbeing. They work with students who have special needs delivering creative making workshops, the products the students create being sold through a shop in Barnsley Town Centre. Other projects include a physical theatre workshop exploring the issue of cyber bullying with Performing Arts Students at Chesterfield College and a Creative Activity project at Kendray Hospital, Barnsley. In addition they offer weekly creative workshops for a young carers project and deliver a music and songwriting project at Barnsley’s women’s refuge.
Working with all ages and in many different settings, over the years they have worked in schools and colleges, prisons, women’s refuges, heritage sites and residential care homes, arts centres, specialist young peoples’ centres, theatres, libraries, community centres and at conferences. The company has also delivered work annually for schools, youth centres and other organisations on the Isle of Man since 1999 and participated in the recent ‘Island of Culture’ Festival. Anjie explained what it is they are about “through the arts we aim to tackle issues that cover a vast array of problems faced
by people in their daily lives. Workshops cover areas such as peer pressure, bullying, sexual health, drug and alcohol misuse, homophobia, anti-social behaviour, racism, domestic abuse, arson and hoax calls. We aim to deliver these with our trademark high energy and honesty and in a nonconfrontational way.” “This year we are celebrating our 20th anniversary. The company was founded in 1995 in Barnsley and continues to be based there with an additional centre in Chesterfield. Working from Chesterfield and West Studios (neighbour to S40 Local) is a new chapter for us and we’re hoping to run many more projects in the area.” The non-profit company, which is a registered charity, has four permanent members of staff and a pool of freelance workers with skills in dance, drama, music, visual arts and crafts.
The move to Chesterfield has given Qdos Creates an additional base - with an office space and studio space for workshops and rehearsals. They still have an office in Barnsley where equipment is stored and will continue to work in the region. The website shows the extent of their work and gives details of 20th anniversary celebration events, visit www.qdoscreates.com. If you are interested in finding out more and in talking to Qdos Creates about their performances and workshops Anjie can be contacted by email anjie@ qdoscreates.com. It’s a great resource to have on our doorstep. Anjie finishes by adding “we also have a great track record in applying with partners for funding, so if you have ideas for projects that we could help deliver, we may be able to help with funding.”

“It’s about you joggers who go round and round and round” Adapted from Blur’s ‘Parklife’
L
ast year saw the first marathon in Chesterfield for over 20 years. It was a great success and helped put Chesterfield and Derbyshire back on the running map. The weather was good, the event was well organised and runners and spectators arrived in huge numbers to support each other, swell the town’s income a little and of course raise money for the event’s organisers, Kids n Cancer UK, a national charity who has its headquarters in Chesterfield. As I write there are 36 weeks until the next event starts. If you’re looking for a challenge, fancy raising money for a great cause or simply want to get fit, then now is the perfect opportunity. Registration is now open for the event which returns to our streets on Sunday 20 September 2015. Runners can now sign up online to take part in the event, which will include a full marathon, half marathon, fun run and a relay race, where four competitors take a share of the course. The event will once again be in support of children’s charity Kids ‘n’ Cancer, along with other local charities and good causes. This year, both the full and half marathon - as well as the fun run - will start and finish at Queen’s Park in Chesterfield. There will be a few other route changes (following feedback from last year’s inaugural marathon) to improve traffic control and access, as well as added ‘interest’ for the runners. We’ll bring you details of the route changes as well as the activities on race day as soon as they’re announced. Early bird prices for entry are available until midnight on 31st May 2015 and are £35 for the full marathon, £30 for the half marathon, £80 for the team relay Page 42 www.s40local.co.uk
and £5 for the fun run. As last year, any individuals raising £250 or teams raising £500 for Kids ‘n’ Cancer can enter for free. Runners will also have the option to have their ‘chipped’ race number posted to them before race day. Mike Hyman at Kids n Cancer commented “We’re not only hugely thankful to all the runners last year but also the fantastic volunteers who stepped up to help us stage the event and also to Chesterfield Borough Council, the Derbyshire Constabulary and all the other services involved in helping with planning beforehand and policing on the day.” Isobel Gibbions from Kids n Cancer organises the voluteers and adds, “Kids ‘n’ Cancer are also looking to add to the volunteers team that helped out magnificently last year on race day, with tasks including manning drinks stations, providing First Aid, traffic control and manning the runner enrolment desks on the day of the marathon.” To sign-up for the Chesterfield and Derbyshire Marathon or to become a volunteer visit chesterfieldmarathon.co.uk And… if you’re taking the challenge why not share your progress with S40 Local? Fancy a monthly blog about your achievements as race day approaches? If so please give me a call I’d love to share your experiences, the pain and how good it felt to finish!

Relaunching S40Local.co.uk Local businesses, events and articles - all in one place Words: Paul Chapman
E
arlier this month we launched the all new S40 Local website: www.S40local.co.uk.
The site has had a complete redesign. There are new features and sections, the business directory is easier to navigate and we’ve updated the ‘What’s On’ listings, there’s an ‘Articles’ section where you can look back and read all the articles we’ve published in the magazine and there’s still the option to browse complete editions that look just like the printed copy. It’s something we’ve been looking to do for some time – we have got an extensive range of local businesses advertising with us and we want to make sure it’s easy for you to find companies and events when you need them. To make it work even harder for you, we’ve been working with a web team and a specialist in search engine optimisation (SEO) to improve the chance of our site appearing at the top of online searches e.g. Google. We want to make sure that if you’re looking for a plumber, electrician, florist etc. in Chesterfield, an S40 Local business will appear near the top of your results!
The new site means we can offer new services. All the businesses that have advertised in the last 12 months will have a free basic listing on the business directory, but for an annual fee of £25 you can upgrade.
The £25 Silver package gives you a more prominent listing with a link to your website and space to display your business logo. This offer is also available to businesses who don’t advertise in the printed magazine. For £95 a year you can have the Platinum package. This means that your business details will appear at the top of the relevant business listing page. For this price you can have a listing with all the features of a Silver listing, PLUS a separate page on S40Local.co.uk with your full business details, business description, website link, logo, images, contact numbers, address, email address. To get your business noticed give us a call on 07764 801080 or register online to find out more.
Take a look. Visit the ‘What’s On’ Listing to find out what’s happening, ways to entertain you, to meet people, learn a new skill or to find out what’s happening on a particular day. We are offering enhanced listings on the ‘What’s On’ online pages, so if you’re promoting an event you can make sure it stands out on the page for a £10 fee. We will also be showing regular events online, something we’ve not done before. If you are part of a club, society, group etc for just £2 a month you can add your meeting details to the online events list.

New web design and build services from S40 Local Our old site had become a little neglected, a problem other businesses may recognise. It was built by a friend and handed over to us about 5 years ago, at the time we weren’t web savvy enough to fully understand how it worked or to even get a full explanation as to where images were in the back-end system. When it needed changes we didn’t know how to replace the logo on the home page! We simply couldn’t make the changes needed to keep it looking fresh. We’d been thinking of developing the new site for a while. With people supporting S40, we have skills in design, writing, creative, digital and social media, so we had some pretty clear ideas about what we wanted and how we wanted it to look. What we lacked were the web development skills to put it all together and of course TIME!
Jeff Guest and Guy Tomlinson of Kre-8 and SEO Co-Pilot were recommended to us and we’ve worked collaboratively throughout the build. Hannah in our team developed the design, look and feel, we’ve had regular meetings to agree the functionality and we’ve written the words. We were really clear that we needed it to be easy to manage and update. We still have things to do, a website like ours should be constantly changing and refreshing. The project has gone really well though, and we’re planning to take the relationship forward to offer a website development service. We have the skills on hand to support with design, copy writing, proof reading and can now offer build and ongoing support. So, if you like what S40 Local does and you’re looking to develop your web presence, S40 Local can now help. Give us a call today on 07764 801080 to find out more.

Oh Baby! Capturing Memories: Lyn Chapman, Wings Photography. Words: Paul Chapman Pictures: Lyn Chapman
H
ere at S40 Local we like a good photo and when a press release from Lyn Chapman of Wings Photography dropped into our inbox we had to smile. Lyn has advertised with us a few times and we were amazed to see these tiny models, expertly captured in her shots. Lyn explained “the first few days of any baby’s life pass by so quickly and often get forgotten in a fog of exhaustion and visitors.
“That’s precisely why many parents now book their new bundle of joy into their very own photography shoot. Many are booking during pregnancy so they don’t miss capturing this special time.”
Lyn is committed to ensuring the safety and comfort of newborn babies as they’re photographed and is a member of the Baby and Newborn Photography Association (BANPAS). Coupled with 8 years’ experience as a photographer; she is able to offer new parents, as well as the extended family, a set of stunning images of those first precious weeks.
“Baby photography sessions usually take place during the first fourteen days of a baby’s life as it is during these optimum two weeks that the baby is sleepy enough to be posed for the photographs” outlined Lyn. “I offer sessions for babies up to 5 weeks old but after this time, the newborn sessions become virtually impossible.” As a mother of two, Lyn is only too aware of the Page 50 www.s40local.co.uk
challenges of her business. Of course, the comfort and happiness of the models come first and it is for this reason that Lyn offers sessions at a boutique studio at her home in Chesterfield, Derbyshire. The studio is warm and homely and Lyn has a vast array of props such as blankets, (faux) furs, hats and headbands all ready for her tiny guests. Sessions last for up to 4 hours allowing for feeding and changing as well as photographs at baby’s convenience! “Many customers return time and again” says Lyn. “They value my professionalism and courtesy as well as the beautiful images. “In addition to newborn photography, I offer bump sessions, cake smashes for special occasions and photographs throughout childhood to allow families to capture every important moment.“
Because of the very short time frame in which newborn images may be captured, Lyn recommends booking during pregnancy to secure an appointment. She says “I’m privileged to be able to photograph babies at the start of their lives and capture just how new they are”. Samples of Lyn’s newborn photography, as well as her wider portfolio of work, can be seen at her website http://www. wingsphotography.co.uk/ index.htm whilst bookings can be made by contacting Wings Photography on 07783 155100.

New Business
Walton Fish & Chips
By the time you read this many of you will already have noticed the new fish and chip shop at Walton shops.
Walton Fish & Chips is a family run business and I caught up with Francine for a quick chat. The family are proud of what they do and have run various local fish and chip shops for the last 40 years. When they saw that the premises had become vacant they saw a great opportunity and one with plenty of free parking right outside the door.
After fully refurbishing the premises they opened up shortly before Christmas. With a Greek Cypriot upbringing it’s no surprise to learn that as well as serving traditional fish and chips, they are offering a range of freshly prepared Greek meals. Kebabs of lamb, pork, chicken and vegetarian all being prepared on the char-grill, chargrilled burgers, Kleftico lamb, Beef Stifado and Moussaka, Mediterranean Vegetables. Greek meals are accompanied with a side salad and a traditional homemade Greek dip of your choice. They look forward to seeing you soon, see advert on page 17.

10 Garden Garden TipsThings
Garden Things Winter Words: Colin Harrison 1. If you’re lucky enough to have a wisteria, now is the time to prune it – advice on how to do this is available online, or check the library. 2. Chit potatoes. If you’ve bought seed potatoes, put them in a cool but light place, not touching, to allow some shoots to develop. Egg boxes are ideal for this (see reminder below). 3. Finish pruning fruit trees (except soft fruit), gooseberries, also red and white currants. As long as the ground isn’t frozen, bare-rooted fruit trees (and summer fruiting raspberries) can still be planted; if you’ve got them and the weather isn’t suitable, keep the roots well wrapped (old sacking is ideal) and – very importantly – out of the wind, but try to get them in the ground as soon as possible. 4. Sow broad beans and early salads in pots but under cover. 5. If you’re proud of your lawn, try not to walk on it if it’s frosty or waterlogged – the former may leave footmarks, and the latter can compress the soil, restricting growth later in the year. 6. Prune hedges – overgrown privet and hawthorn can both be reduced drastically, they’re virtually indestructible. Ideally hedges should be ‘battered’, that is wider at the bottom than top, although they usually end up the other way round, as it’s easier to prune at arm height. If yours are like this, try to achieve the right shape in stages. 7. Cut down any ornamental grasses left over winter – they will start back into growth soon and you want to avoid clipping the new shoots. 8. Common advice is to split clumps of snowdrops ‘in the green’, that is after
Page 56 www.s40local.co.uk
the flowers have faded but the foliage is still green. However, research by the Royal Horticultural Society has shown that there is no benefit in this, and they should be treated like most other bulbs – split and transplanted when dormant, after the foliage has died back, although their website still advises the old fashioned method. This really means you can do it at anytime apart from when they start back into growth in late autumn. 9. This isn’t specific to any season, but if you’re going to spend time in the garden (especially if the weather isn’t great), try to do at least one job with an obvious visual result; some pruning, general border tidying or maybe some digging. That way, when you’re finished, you (and your family!) will be able to see that you’ve really done something. Whereas, if you’ve spent an entire afternoon in the greenhouse sowing seeds and the garden doesn’t look any different, it can feel as if nothing’s actually been done, which might be a bit disheartening. 10. House plants should be moved to as light a place as possible; weak winter sunshine won’t do them any harm, but directly above a radiator isn’t good. If you were given an orchid as a Christmas present – don’t panic; they may look fragile but those sold in garden centres and supermarkets are pretty tough, and fairly easy to look after. There’s lots of advice online and suitable books in the library.

A Walk In The Park Words and pictures: Paul Chapman
I
f you’ve walked through Somersall Park from Oakfield Avenue recently, you will hopefully have noticed the line of four new Sugar Maple Tree Saplings. These trees were planted on 25th November by the Friends of Somersall Park in conjunction with Chesterfield Council for National Tree planting Week 2014. Ten enthusiastic young members of the Eco-Committee from Westfield Infant School were also on hand to assist and ensure everything went to plan! Around the base of the four trees are planted 2000 Narcissus bulbs – which will give a wonderful burst of colour to the park.
Rebecca Robinson (FOSP Chairperson) was there on the day representing the group and commented ‘It’s wonderful to see these beautiful trees being planted – especially with involvement from Westfield School, as this fosters a sense of ownership and pride. They will be a great addition, and hopefully we will later be adding a plaque to commemorate the tree planting as part of the history of the park. Of course, we are appealing to the local community to keep an eye on them and help protect them from any damage. Huge thanks to Will Thornhill from CBC for supporting the project through to completion.’ I’ll do my best to keep up to date with the group and their activities in Somersall Park – so watch this space! Lanterns in the Park Allissa Charlesworth
Tuesday 16 December started much like any other day, but all over S40 our community was waking up with an extra bit of festive spring in our step – looking forward to the first event arranged by The Friends of Somersall Park: The FOSP Lantern Parade and Festive Sing-Song.
The idea was simple – bring the community together to enjoy some Christmassy fun in the park, and show support for FOSPs ongoing efforts. The event was arranged with a minimal budget – with support from local businesses such as Pooky, The Candy Cabin, Specsavers, CNS Media, B&Q and Morrisons. It was advertised on Facebook, in S40 Local, with flyers and mainly via word of mouth. ‘We really had no idea how many people might turn out on the night’ said Rebecca Robinson, FOSP Chairperson, ‘And of course, we were very much praying for fine weather!’ It was a drizzly day and the decision was taken to hold the singing indoors – so a section of Aurora Choir would greet the community arriving at Walton Evengelical Church, who kindly offered their function room as a plan B option.
On the night the turnout was unbelievable – with roughly 500 people of all ages arriving at the Walton Dam entrance with lanterns of all shapes and sizes. Quite a spectacle – the parade began on the path up to the dam and stretched right along Walton Road and up the hill!
‘We were absolutely overwhelmed by the trouble people had gone to with their lanterns!’, said Katie Spelman of FOSP, ‘They ranged from tiny home-made willow lanterns up to huge brightly coloured tissue creations – and every size in between! The children glowed with pride as they trudged through the dark in their wellies and warmest coats. We walked along through the mud singing Page 62 www.s40local.co.uk
lots of festive songs – it really was fantastic to turn back and look across the water at the huge number of twinkling lights moving along the dam. Even the swans seemed impressed, and kindly glided by for an extra effect!’.
The Chesterfield Air Cadets were in attendance – helping with safety concerns and lighting the path for the festivities.
On arrival at Walton Church the huge crowd filtered into the Church garden for the judging of the lantern competition – announced by Local Radio Personality, Becky Measures. They then moved inside to listen to the singing and have a warm drink. Mince pies were donated by many members of the community, and Morrisons provided Gingerbread men for all the children.
‘We were, and still are, taken aback by the way the community came together to support this event,’ said Laura Saxton of FOSP, ‘with so many more people than expected attending, there were moments of panic, but the Christmas Spirit definitely won through and everybody had a fantastic time. We hope this is just the beginning for FOSP events, and we are already thinking about our lanterns for the parade next year! Who knows – it may become a new tradition!’ If you would like to be a part of the change at Somersall Park in 2015 please contact the group via Facebook or email friendsofsomersallpark@gmail. com.
Christmas Trees Jane Simmonds Hello everyone,
This is just a brief thank you to those who participated in our Christmas Tree Festival at St Thomas’ Church this year. It was an amazing weekend, where we welcomed nearly 1,200 visitors. Everyone appreciated the number of trees we had, the creativity and individuality shown, so thank you all for going to such great effort.
Whilst fundraising has never been our main focus, we have so far donated £332 for the borehole project in Swaziland, which is amazing.
Whilst the decision has not yet been made, following feedback during the course of the weekend, it is very likely that we will hold another festival in 2015, so ‘watch this space………’
Hope you’ve had a very special and peaceful Christmas, from Jane Simmonds and all at St Thomas’ Church, Brampton.
