Intro Welcome to the June edition of S40 Local.

Summer is definitely on the way with lighter nights and the plants and trees turning green. Father's Day is around the corner (Sunday 21 June if you haven’t already got it marked in the diary), be sure to check out our great local independents shops, for mens gifts. We have a busy edition as always:

• We look back at the government decision to relocate the Post Office to Chesterfield in 1963; • Catch up with our outgoing mayor, Cllr Alexis Diouf about his busy year;

• The launch during Bike Week 2015 of a new cycling club, The Brampton Bicycle Club, for 6 to 18 year olds;

• News of more improvements at The Manor.

We also have a number of people wanting your help:

• Rampage Skate CIC are looking to create a new indoor skate park and need your support;

• Ann Bateman is promoting her fundraising book My Love of Birds for the new Cancer Charity at the Royal Hospital; • Requests for support and donations for the charity to hold a party for children from Chernobyl during their convalescence visit to the UK; • To go along and have fun at the Party in the Park, raising funds for The Sonia Rayner Family Trust.

What's struck me, is the amount of work being done across the area for the good of others, a theme picked up by Alexis during his interview on page 18. Finally, I’d like to thank John for his email, a pat on the back for us at S40, which I’ll share with Nicola (who turns my rambles into interesting articles…)

"I've just got round to reading the April edition of S40 (sorry, I've been busy!) and have come across your Intro with its reference to yourself as a non-journalist, among other things you are not. I think you do yourself a disservice. "You have made yourself into a journalist and your writing skills surpass many of those exhibited by what you might call "proper" journalists. "More power to your elbow, sir." 'til July, Paul.

Chetwynd House

How the Post Office changed Chesterfield. Words: Angela Saul, with thanks also to Jackie Witham. Pictures: Courtesy of Picture The Past

A

s a reader of S40, it’s likely you know someone who works at Royal Mail or the Post Office.

But have you ever stopped to consider why Chesterfield became such a large centre for this national company?

It all started with Chetwynd House in 1963. The story behind its creation and the move of the staff from the Accountant General’s Department and the Pensions Administration teams in London and Harrogate is rather fascinating.

The story begins just after the war when the government decided to disperse some of its larger departments to outside of London for defence purposes (it was not deemed a good idea to have all the major government departments in one city, should there be similar attacks to the air strikes in the war). The aspiration was to also bring new kinds of skills and employment to industrial towns. The Post Office with its various large administration departments was an obvious candidate for such a move.

Picture: R Wilsher

The decision to move to Chesterfield was initially taken at the end of the 1940s, but around 1954 the government had second thoughts and started to look even further north towards Durham as a possible accounting headquarters instead. However, in July 1955 a delegation from Chesterfield Corporation (todays Borough Council equivalent) went to London to meet ministry officials and Post Office Executives and put their case forward as to why Chesterfield should get this work. Page 4 www.s40local.co.uk

Minutes of the meeting are stored in the Postal Museum archives and the Chesterfield Corporation council members put up a good case for the plans to remain on track for the work to come to Chesterfield, one of the main reasons being the lack of suitable employment opportunities in Chesterfield for women and grammar school leavers. Their efforts paid off, of course, and the final decision to bring the work to Chesterfield was taken in 1957. The serious planning began in 1958 when the Accountant Generals Department (AGD) set up a Dispersal Section. A great deal of effort went into making the move as voluntary as possible. Calls for London and Harrogate based volunteers to move to Chesterfield were a success with 1,000 members of staff volunteering. Over the next few years the sections of the AGD due to move were staffed by these volunteers, so that by the time of the move they had learnt their roles and the department could run efficiently once in its new location and they could train the 650 locally recruited staff.

A liaison committee was set up with Chesterfield Corporation for the 5 year task of building, planning, arranging the housing, agreeing and administering the terms of the lodging and removal expenses. Not only was a new building being erected to house the work, but the Loundsley Green housing estate was purpose built to provide accommodation for the families of the 1000 AGD workers moving to Chesterfield.

The culmination of this effort was marked in November 1963 when the Postmaster General, Reginald Bevins, officially opened Chetwynd House, the new £1.3 million building (approximately £23 million at today’s value). The building was named after George Chetwynd (1824 – 1882) the Receiver and Accountant General who originally conceived the idea of the Postal Order.

Consider Chesterfield without this influx of jobs and families. Notes from the planning meetings at the time, also housed in the National Postal Museum, stated the population of the Borough of Chesterfield was approximately 70,000. Today the population is over 103,000 – despite the closure of the

coal mining industry and a lot of Chesterfield’s factories and shops – how might the economy and population of Chesterfield differ if the mass move of staff and families had not taken place and how many people reading this might not even live in Chesterfield had their relatives not made that journey from London or Harrogate 50 years ago?

'Loundsley Green housing estate was purpose built to provide accommodation for the families of the 1000 AGD workers' In the ensuing years the Pensions department moved into its own building, Rowland Hill House, opposite Queens Park, which opened on 6 June 1997. Chetwynd House was eventually demolished to make way for Future Walk… which opened on 5 July 1999.

House. A major piece of 20th Century Art, the sculpture, (Curved Reclining Form), Rosewall, was created by Dame Barbara Hepworth, one of the world’s outstanding sculptors of the twentieth century. The artist was closely involved in the original siting of the sculpture, which she had completed the previous year.

In more recent years Future Walk has become a shared building with other companies. The Royal Mail has been privatised, Royal Mail and the businesses from the Royal Mail Group have separated. But the businesses remain influential and important to the Chesterfield economy, providing opportunities, employment and prosperity. Something we’d hope the current council will continue to work to retain.

The buildings and the company structure may change, but the people who work and have worked there, have provided the character and heart of somewhere that is not just a place to work but also a community.

The only remaining feature of the original site was the sculpture, acquired by the Post Office to mark the relocation of its Accountant General’s Department to Chesterfield in 1963 and which used to sit outside Chetwynd

Launching the Brampton Bicycle Club Words: Paul Chapman

During this year’s bike week, on Thursday 18 June, Brampton bicycle club will be holding their first cycling session for six to sixteen year olds at Holmebrook Valley Park. As a founder member, alongside Alistair Meikle, from Wheelie Fun Wheels and Cycle Campaign, I’m really excited to get this off the ground. One of the things I’ve felt Chesterfield lacks is cycling activities and facilities for kids, once they've learnt to pedal but, before they can take to the hills and trails on their mountain bikes - suitable places for kids to play on their bikes, away from traffic and interesting enough that they can actually ride but not so technical or hilly it puts them off. It's a specific list that’s difficult to attain and, when there are places that fit the bill, they're nearly all a car journey away or at least an illegal pavement cycle or footpath excursion to get there. Last summer I attended a British Cycling Level 2 course at Brookfield School and whilst on the course got talking about my thoughts with Alastair from Wheely Fun Wheels we discussed the possibility of a local cycling club for young kids. So trained up and with DBS (formerly CRB) checks under our belts I'm excited to say those conversations have led to the formation of the Brampton Bicycle Club. The new club is looking to improve the cycling skills of youngsters and is set up and ready to go on 18 June. Alastair explains "we hope to provide fun sessions with coaching delivered by British Cycling coaches plus a bit of competition. Chesterfield Borough Council have agreed we can use Holmebrook Valley Park as a venue, we’ll be using the car park on the left just before the cafe building for courses and coaching. We also plan to introduce a social element, so the whole family can get involved in the future, visits to other cycling venues to get kids familiar with the range of cycling disciplines and hopefully inspire them to give them a try, plus there will also be disability sport”, says Alastair. The first session for six to sixteen year olds will be at Holmebrook Valley Park, from 6:30pm and 7:30pm and kids will need to bring their own bike and helmet. If you have children who are interested (or are interested yourself if under 16) please get in touch to book your place on 07746 801080 or email info@bramptonbicycleclub.org.uk. We’re also looking for adults to get involved who are willing to lend a hand, either with training or administration of the club. We look forward to hearing from you and meeting some of you at the first session at Holmebrook Valley Park. Page 14 www.s40local.co.uk

A Year as Mayor

An outgoing chat with Cllr Alexis Diouf Words: Paul Chapman On 20 May Cllr Alexis Diouf hands over his gold chains, Parlour and title ‘Mayor of Chesterfield’ to his successor.

“Even my driver,” quips Alexis “as people assume I get driven everywhere, but with cutbacks, getting yourself to some appointments can be much more a DIY job” and with 400 appointments attended this year, that’s a lot of DIY. Reflecting on his year as mayor Alexis shared his experiences and impressions “Over the last 12 months I’ve gained tremendous respect for the people of Chesterfield. There’s an incredible amount of commitment, passion and pride in our town with a huge number of people giving up their time voluntarily to make things better.”

“Some of these are traditional groups that we recognise as part of our heritage - The Royal British Legion for example; they don’t just turn up for events, they arrange things, like Remembrance Day. Also the Soroptimist's International Group raise money for agencies at home and abroad, identifying problems and support these through fund raising initiatives, as do the Rotary Club and Inner Wheel. All great organisations working hard to make changes to people’s lives. “The ones I’ve mentioned are often seen as exclusive clubs that enjoy a good lunch, but through my work I’ve seen groups of people passionate about raising money and solving problems” Alexis explains. “The problem many of these organisations face is a lack of new blood, older folk make up the memberships and they need new people to get involved. One recently brought forward their 50th anniversary celebrations,

concerned their numbers may dwindle if they wait another year!”

They’ve been so impressed that Alexis and his wife Vickey-Anne have agreed to give more of their time to such organisations in the future.

Alexis explained “As an unelected, non political role in Chesterfield, I wasn’t sure how I could provide value to the town in the role, but I’ve been struck by the value other people associate with the Mayoralty. I saw the mayor’s role being as a uniting figurehead and representative for all in Chesterfield and it seems people place value on having the mayor attend their events – hence my 400 engagements, four on some days. It’s been a busy year with lots of tea, coffee, cake and sandwiches!” Alexis laughs. Page 18 www.s40local.co.uk

“Two events have been particularly memorable for me. I was invited to France to commemorate WW1. 600,000 people who died in Normandy during the First World War, from both sides, are named side by side in alphabetical order – demonstrating the futility of war and the importance of maintaining peace.” “The return of the Lancers from Afghanistan was an eye opener. I had the honour of greeting the men, some just 19 years old, young boys really who have seen atrocities I would never wish on someone so young.”

“I’ve also become aware of how some areas of Chesterfield struggle to create a sense of community” added Alexis. “We need to look at ways to bring people together, which is difficult as often the areas that struggle have little in the way of a community centre or open spaces to play or meet.” “If I was to offer any suggestions to my successor I’d be asking them to look at ways to open up the Mayors parlour to more people, to share what it means to be mayor and to promote the heritage and history of Chesterfield more widely, to engage with more young people and get them interested in how councils work and the role of the Mayor. Actions that promote positivity.”

“Finally, I’d like to thank people for the fantastic support I’ve had from local businesses, in particularly along Chatsworth Road, Maison Mes Amis, Koo, Blu, Café Aroma, Blanc, Nonnas, West BarsTandoori and GK Ford. “I’ve such a huge respect for the businesses who have helped me raise £15,000 during my year which will be split between my three charities, The British Heart Foundation, Roof Stop Trust and Friends of Baback” says Alexis. As Alexis prepares his outgoing speech for the chamber it will no doubt cover the experiences he’s shared above, but one of his most treasured memories is the Duke of Devonshire commenting “what a credit to Chesterfield Alexis is” and the excitement around Senegal when they were told a Senegalese chap was Mayor of Chesterfield – Alexis added “many of the Senegal residents now know where Chesterfield is and some have even read S40 Local!”

So out goes Alexis, with our thanks for a great job and in comes Cllr Barry Bingham from New Whittington and Barrow Hill, I hope to catch up with Barry soon.

The Manor @ Brampton New Salon, Spa and Hairdressers Words: Paul Chapman

Last year saw the launch of the new Manor at Brampton - rated the best family dining venue in Chesterfield. This summer sees the famous 16th Century Manor House invite us to their recently opened Salon, Spa and boutique Hairdressers for a chat with Lisa Smith, Group Business Development Manager. Over the past few weeks refurbishments have taken place in the Beauty and Hair Salon. "It's looking great" enthuses Lisa, "we have exciting new products to indulge our customers. In the beauty salon we now boast Dermologica for both treatments and retail. The salon offers Spa Days to relax, unwind and spend the day being looked after from head to toe. We provide breakfast, lunch or dinner and we offer an extensive range of treatments, everything from a spray tan or full body massage to wedding make up and hair." "The hair salon is particularly unique as it is exclusively using La Biosthetique Paris a luxury French product and using the latest technologies."

Craig Lynch, owner of Brampton Manor, set about investing in major renovations in February 2014, featured in the June 2014 edition of S40 Local. The Manor saw a refresh of both the interior and exterior; a new outside patio area, playground for the kids, booths internally - to create a much more child friendly environment. "The Manor has always prided itself on its warm welcome" says Lisa "but today we work even harder to ensure it's a great place for

Page 22 www.s40local.co.uk

families and friends to meet and dine together. A weekly quiz and live music night add to the list of events that take place each week."

"All our hard work really paid off when we were recognised at the Chesterfield Food and Drink awards 2014, when we won the award for being the most 'Family Friendly' establishment. "We've continued to build on this reputation by offering affordable dining and introducing special offers to give customers real value for money. "Monday to Wednesday we offer two main meals and two pints or two glasses of wine for £20.

"Thursday evening is Steak Night where customers can enjoy two Derbyshire Rump Steaks and a Bottle of House Wine for £29.50. "On Fridays and Saturdays we have the 'The Fizz Friends' offer. This enables customers to choose from one of our grazing boards and a bottle of Prosecco for two for just £25, whilst listening to a laid back live acoustic set from a local act.

"Saturday afternoons are for families when we have a special visit from Brampton the Bear, show a kid's film on the big screen and offer a family feast to share."

Like the Fox and Goose, Craig's sister business, The Manor continues to be the place to spend quality family time or relaxing in the spa and enjoying the facilities on offer. Lisa adds "We look forward to welcoming you again soon".

Article Advertorial

"My grandson says he hates Maths and his parents are both Accountants!"

Why, we asked ourselves? What have we all missed, have we done something wrong somewhere? He comes home from Maths and talks about ‘Chunking? What’s chunking?! They didn’t do it like that in my day! Even his parents get a bit confused with it all, and they’re not the only parents, I bet! Sound familiar?

Do you sit down to help your child or grandchild with their Maths homework and end up feeling like us, confused and frustrated? Do you have a nagging feeling that they aren’t quite where they need to be in Maths, but how do you ever know?

We took Simon to Kip McGrath for a free Maths assessment. They gave us the feedback immediately and helped clear the fog! Their assessment provided us with a thorough and accurate reflection of Simon’s ability - both areas of confidence and weakness. They were very specific, right down to exactly which sums he could do and which he couldn’t. They told us that it is true for Maths skills from primary to GCSE level. Simon enjoyed his assessment because he found he could do more than he thought he could and he was not pressured and had a supportive 1:1 process. Jo, at Kip had an interesting discussion with him about his views on his ability and how he felt - allowing the process of building self-esteem to begin right from the start. We’d never thought of asking him what he thought or felt. It made us a bit ashamed really.

My love of birds Ann Bateman's fundraising book of her poems and photography Words: Paul Chapman Photography: Ann Bateman

S40 Local first encountered Ann Bateman when we featured her photograph of ‘courting swans’ on the cover of the 23rd edition of S40 Local in May 2011.

After losing both her father and sister to cancer, Ann started a project which combines her love of photography, poems and birds. Ann has produced an image rich book of bird poems, called ‘my love of birds’ which she’s selling to raise funds for a new cancer centre in Chesterfield Royal Hospital at Calow, due to be completed in 2016. “After my husband died in 2005 I joined the RSPB and also the Chesterfield Photographic Society which held a Digital Photography course at the Library and became involved in both organisations.”

“When I heard about the need for funds for a new cancer centre in Chesterfield Royal Hospital I really wanted to do something to help. Having friends who had to travel to Weston Park for their cancer treatment I know how much easier if would have been if they could have had treatment closer to home.”

The book started with photos of birds – “I captured many of them locally... Stubbing court, Poolsbrook, Holmebrook Valley Park, Walton Dam, Ogston, the river Hipper, and some from further afield, Puffins from Farne Islands and others taken whilst travelling abroad. All photos are my own... as are most of the poems, although I have been supported by Neil Turner a friend from the RSPB who wrote me a few poems. The photos in turn inspired me to write all rhyming poems, I like a poem to rhyme. “I created the book at home and, all finished, it’s 130 pages and contains over 80 poems and wonderful bird pictures. I’m really happy Page 28 www.s40local.co.uk

and proud of the book... I’ve initially printed 100 copies which are available at £9.95 each. £5 from each sale will go directly to the charity.

"The book has been printed locally at The Digital Print Co, Sheepbridge and was officially launched at a meet on 12th May at the Proact Stadium. This meeting was looking at ways in which funds could be raised for the new cancer care centre at The Royal Hospital." The books are available from Poppies cafe in Eyres in Chesterfield, Stephensons Tea and Coffee House, 'Flowers' shop at the Royal, Leslie Hollingsworth at Carsington Water and Nenna Kind Cancer Support Drop in Centre in Chesterfield (above Dents chemist) or from Ann herself on 01246 229610. The book hasn't been registered with an ISBN so is not available from book shops.

Book Signing & Coffee Morning

Wednesday 24th June 10 to 11.30am. Stephensons Tea & Coffee House, Chesterfield. Meet Ann and pick up a copy of her book.

RAMPAGE

Chesterfield's indoor skate park

Chesterfield based Team Rampage Skate is a Community Interest Company and have recently established to seek funding for an indoor skate park in a building close to Chesterfield’s town centre. They aim to provide a local indoor, regulated and supervised sporting space. “Our town and young people need more facilities that support children and parents and bring the community together through activities and sport” says Andrea Revell-Booker, one of four directors. “Rampage commits to providing a space where people of any age can participate in weekly planned activities.

"Through skating we aim to strengthen the relationship between social and community groups, improve young people's confidence and hopefulness in their Page 32 www.s40local.co.uk

future through youth enrichment programmes.”

“It’s early days in a project with a five year timescale, the first stage is to build the skate park using the UK's leading skate park builders Four one Four.

“Chesterfield’s current skate park was never finished. The developer fell into financial difficulty and the plan to flood light and extend it never happened. The agreement was to hand the park over to the local council, on completion, who would maintain it, but due to the unfinished state, what should have been a valuable community asset is now a no-mans land.

“It has been allowed to deteriorate over six years and in some cases young people have been seen taking a dust pan and brush, to sweep up glass and litter themselves before they can skate."

An indoor park will ensure it's managed, creates a safe, year round environment, no one will have to stop doing the sport they love due to British weather. The new park would include a parents' comfort zone for supervising or relaxing whilst younger kids skate and professional coaching would be available.

So, the four skate addicted directors are looking for support.

Unfortunately by the time you read this the voting for AVIVA Community Interest funding will have closed, but if you can help in any way please visit their facebook page at Rampage-Indoor-SkatePark.

Party In The Park! Raising funds for the Sonia Rayner Family Trust Saturday 20th June 2015 @ Queens Park Words: Paul Chapman The Britannia Bash is back… as the Britannia Bash 2015: Party in the Park! And it is bigger, better and this year being held in Queen’s Park. Last year’s event, arranged by Barry Rayner, Johnny Wray from The Britannia Inn and Andy Woodward was a huge success, attended by more than 2,500 people over the course of the day; people coming from as far afield as London, Bolton, Somerset and Kent. The day long, family friendly event featured plenty of live music, children’s entertainment, stalls, hog roast and outdoor bar and raised nearly £4,000 for the Sonia Rayner Family Trust; a fund set up in memory of a young mum and Brampton resident who sadly passed away from heart failure in January 2014 leaving a teenage son and two young daughters. The event was just one of a number of fund-raising activities held during the year; including a Zumbathon, a Race Night at the Barrel Inn, Brampton and a 10k Sponsored Walk organised by Sonia’s son, Jack.Andy says “Feedback on the Britannia Bash was fantastic, with so many people asking us to do it again. In addition to the great music, hits on the day included a tombola, stalls and activities provided by Sonia’s friends and the chance to get up close and personal with a very large python; all of which will be making a very welcome return. But this year there will be even more. “Entry is again free, although a small donation dropped in one of the many collection buckets on the day will be very welcome, just £1 per person helping make the event worthwhile. “All are welcome; with something for everyone, young and old alike.” All money raised again goes to the Sonia Rayner Family Trust, a fund set up in their mother’s name to help ensure the children have a secure future in an uncertain world. “Sonia’s three children Jack (16), Rubi (5) and India (4) have had a tough year facing up to life without their mother; with so many event’s in their lives for which a mother should be present such as India’s first day at school, Rubi’s first show with her dance school and Jack appearing in his school’s production of Footloose. All of these would have made Sonia so proud” explains Andy. “There are also the days when their mother is even more painfully missed such as Christmas, Birthdays and, of course, Mother’s Day.” A bench in memory of Sonia has been placed in the children’s play area at Queens Park, where she used to frequently take the children. If you fancy helping the cause whilst having a great day out, please pop down to Queen's Park on Saturday, 20th June from midday onwards where the party will be in full swing.

Clare Gage Designs @ Libbys A new location for Clare Gage designs. You will have seen the distinctive designs made by local designer Clare Gage in Created Gallery for the past 7 years. After we said a fond farewell to Created in April, Clare was keen to keep her products available on Chatsworth Road. Clare said, ‘I’ve had such a lot of support from shoppers in Chesterfield and I know there are many collectors of my designs who live locally.’

You’ll now find Clare’s designs at Libby’s. It’s a great setting for Clare’s cups and vases as it’s well known for being a perfect place for finding different and delightful things. Clare has a strong association with Libby’s as until recently she made all her designs in a studio behind the shop. After graduating from university Clare set up her studio and worked there until a change was needed when she had her son in 2013. Clare now works from a studio at her house but is delighted to continue to have a connection with Libby’s and the address where her business began! A Derbyshire party for Chernobyl’s children. Can you donate party food and items? The Chernobyl Children Life Line group, brings children to Derbyshire from the nuclear contaminated Chernobyl region for a one month convalescing break, each year. Jane Redgewell, who volunteers explains “The children who come here are from the poorest village, they breath and eat contaminated food and air every single day, most will, in their lives be diagnosed with some form of cancer.

“Children stay with volunteer host families who, at their own cost, take children into their own homes for the duration of their stay. The children receive the benefits of good healthy uncontaminated food, clean fresh air and a healthy environment in which to convalesce and rebuild their much depleted immune system which gives them the opportunity of improved health. “My own son David was diagnosed with Leukaemia when he was three and fought the disease for seven years until it beat him and he passed away at the age of 10. He told me to smile every day, as he wouldn’t be able to. I got involved with the charity to do just that and to give these children something to smile about” During the children’s stay a number of social occasions are arranged – none more important than the welcome party, a traditional English party, where children get together for the first time with their host families and experience Derbyshire hospitality. Can you help? Somersall park - cutback & clearance event. Somersall Park has an issue with Himalayan Balsam, an invasive weed which causes a big threat to the biodiversity of our park and it's taking over fast!

We need to take action ASAP and the best way to do this is to pull it out by hand whilst the plants are young. The Friends of Somerall Park, alongside the council are holding a group cutback and clearance event to try and get it under control - but need lots of volunteers to make this work! Please please give us even an hour of your time bertween 11:00 and 13:00 on Saturday 13 June? Bring your gloves and secateurs!

As a totally voluntary charity funds are tight, with the majority of funds going towards paying for the transport costs to bring the children here.

“We are not looking for massive funds, but help with party foods and goods to create a memorable day for children who at home struggle to find the funds for basics such as food, let alone a party”. “The aim of the party is to plant the seeds of happiness of love so that if these children ever are in a hospital bed, they can remember the visit to our area”. If you are able, please consider offering some support to our appeal to create a happy, wonderful and long lasting memory, you can get in touch via S40 Local.

The Brampton Food Market Get the dates in your diary! Words: Paul Chapman

We don’t make it to every market, but when we do get along to the Brampton Food Market, with artisan bread from The Loaf, local cheese from Mark Ansell, perhaps potted meat from Granny Mary and a cake from one or other of the stalls, we can quickly amass the makings of a very tasty Saturday lunch. Often consumed a little bit later than usual, if we‘ve been tempted at the market by the bacon or sausage sandwiches from Moss Valley Fine Meats. It’s a friendly and sociable market - you’d be hard pushed to go along and not bump into someone you know, and it’s all about supporting local independent businesses.

Graham and Alison Wells run the market on behalf of St Thomas’ church, hiring the room renting the stalls and promoting the market.

“You can never tell when it’s going to be a busy or a slow day, if the weather is great it can be good, conversely sometimes people jump in the car and travel away from town. And if it’s bad weather the same can be said, you just don’t know.”

It’s factors like these that can make or break a market so I caught up with Graham Wells to see how things are going. The market is held once a month, the dates are always in S40 and we put a sign out in front of the church during the week before so people know, but because it isn’t every week, people sometimes miss it - even the regulars. So numbers do vary but are pretty steady overall. If you do enjoy it I’d really ask people to put the dates in their diary and come along to support us” says Graham.

“The market is a community event, it brings people together” explains Graham. He and his wife Alison attend the church and together they are an active part of the congregation and also run the Fair Trade stall at the market. Alison is a voluntary rep for Traidcraft in the UK and has a passionate desire to help achieve their mission. “For me the principles behind the food Page 44 www.s40local.co.uk

market align closely with the principles of fair trade – establishing direct trade between the producer and consumer, changing consumer behaviours to be more supportive of the local communities and economy, a more positive trade relationship.”

The market was started from within the church, they wanted to establish a regular community market that fit with the ethos of the church centre. Sally Anne Beecham helped establish the first markets and, since the beginning of last year, has handed the day to day operation of the market to Graham.

2015 Food Market Dates Saturday 6 June Saturday 4 July Saturday 5 September Saturday 3 October Saturday 7 November Saturday 5 December Sally Anne is the Operations Manager at the church and the market took up a lot of her time, time which is very pressured as the church centre’s use has increased over the recent years. She explained “I was looking for a way to share the workload and woke one night realising that Alison and Graham would be ideal for the job.” “We welcomed the idea” enthused Graham, “we live in the area, use the church and have been involved in the market and this allows us to carry out the Traidcraft role whilst providing a means for other stallholders to showcase their businesses.” “We typically have 16 stalls in total at each market, of which two or three are

charitable stalls such as Traidcraft,‘Pateman’s Preserves’ on behalf of Samaritans Purse and a stall for St Thomas’ Community Fund. We have about ten regular stalls, the largest space taken by the Loaf, an artisan bakers based over the hill in Crich. Sometimes, such as at Easter and Christmas, craft stalls and other activities are included. In summer there are often plant/ garden produce stalls outside. “At a typical market you can buy bread, veg, organic meats, cheese, cakes, preserves, pasta sauces and a host of other products local and, from all over the world on the Traidcraft stall (chocolate, tea, coffee, sugar, dried fruit, cous-cous etc.). It is difficult to ensure we have a balance but we do work hard to do so; too many of one type of stall would make for a less interesting market.

“If you run a business that you feel would complement the stalls on the market Graham would love to hear from you “people do perhaps think it’s a bit of a closed shop but we do have people moving in and out so we do potentially have space for the right businesses” says Graham.

If you have never been to the Brampton Food Market, perhaps it’s time you gave it a try – as an S40 Local reader, many of you will be within walking distance. Why not pop in for a browse and a bacon sandwich etc, the café is open and it’s a pleasant morning out, meeting friends and the people behind the businesses. Please mention S40 Local · Page 45

10 Garden Garden TipsThings

Garden Things for June Words: Colin Harrison Picture: Robert Nixon Betts This is the busy season in the garden, but, as always, the thing to remember is that it should be relaxing and fun, so don't overdo it and try to stick to some fixed timetable about when things should be done. 1.

2.

3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.

9.

Weeds are usually successful because they grow and set seed quickly, so remove them before they flower. If you have to use pesticides, a systemic one painted onto the growing tips in dry weather is the most efficient way of applying it; wind dispersal of spray can damage any plant it comes into contact with.

If you have fruit trees, you can improve the size of individual fruit by thinning out the buds. This is only practical with trees up to a certain size, and most big trees will produce enough fruit for a family without too much interference (apart from pruning). There's lots of guidance online about the thinning methods for different sorts of fruit. Summer bedding plants can be planted out now; soak them very thoroughly beforehand and, if the soil is dry, pour water into the planting hole and let it drain away before putting the plants in, although you should still water them in well – this helps the soil settle.

Greenhouses heat up very fast in even hazy sunshine, so they may need shading of some sort, as well as maximum ventilation. Dead-head ornamentals to encourage more flowers.

All danger of frost should have passed, so any tender plants that have been germinated indoors or under cover can be planted out. Lots of vegetable seeds can be sown directly into the ground, to produce a succession of crops.

Stake plants that have a tendency to flop over, especially those with big flower heads. Ideally, the stakes should be about 20cm (8”) shorter than the eventual height of the plant, so they’re completely hidden when the plants start to flower.

Keep an eye on anything growing in containers, to make sure they don’t dry out (this is especially important with grow bags). Don’t assume that rain provides irrigation, as very little of it will reach the soil of containers, and remember that both sunshine and wind cause plants to transpire lots of water. It’s much harder to re-wet containers once they’ve dried out, as the water runs straight through; if this happens, soak the container thoroughly at regular intervals (allow an hour or so between soakings) until you’re happy the soil is retaining the water and it’s not just running out again.

Plants in containers will need feeding, but make sure the soil is damp first, as otherwise the feed will run straight through (see above).

10. Houseplants should be moved away from where they are in direct sun, and will need regular watering and feeding (again not into dry soil).

Repair Cafe by Transition Chesterfield Loundsley Green Fun Day: 13th June 11am to 3pm Bring along non-functioning household items or clothes in need of repair and our team of fixers will see if they can mend them.
