he timing of this edition means you’ve probably made any resolutions you’re going to make and are either well into them or have given them up as a bad idea! Perhaps, like me, you're using January for hibernating and reflecting; a time to look at things to achieve in the year or things to do differently, a softer approach than setting hard and fast resolutions. Here we’ll continue to support local businesses and services and make choices, where we can, to avoid using chain stores and supermarkets for every purchase. Whatever you are planning, here’s a few of our thoughts for 2016. Shop Local: A reminder of the benefits; for every £1 you spend locally, with a small or medium-sized business 63p stays in the local economy, compared to 40p with a larger business (Source: @LiveShopLocal). Small local businesses are more likely to employ local people. Independent shops create character and individuality in the area. Shopping locally can offer better value for money, when you calculate fuel, parking, delivery, time etc. Learn to cook or improve your skills: Home cooked food tastes better (well it should do!), is cheaper, healthier (you know what’s in it and can reduce salt and sugar depending on your taste) and is shown to encourage people to buy food from local independents. See the article on page 26 about Coghlans Cookery School, for courses from basic to gastro. And there’s a money saving voucher for our readers! Do more exercise: You don’t need to rush out and buy the latest carbon framed road bike or join a gym, use stairs instead of lifts, walk the kids to school, park a bit further away from your destination and find ways to integrate a bit of exercise into your routine. The new Queen's Park Sports Centre also opened this month, see our article on page 36, or get in training and enter the 2016 Kids n Cancer Chesterfield Marathon, 2 October 2016. Grow your own: Fresher, healthier and good for the soul! If you’re a beginner, why not go along to Potato Day in the pavements in town on 30 January, the team from Transition Chesterfield are brimming with good advice. You could also use the gardening tips on page 52 for ideas. Try an alternative treatment for a health problem: Brampton Therapy Centre offer a range of alternative therapies and we have a number of complementary therapists on our website, www.s40local.co.uk. Renew and Refresh Your Surroundings: There are loads of local businesses offering services to change or improve your home, flick through the magazine and contact someone for a quote! Financial: Money to invest? Our financial advisors will be able help. Plans to move home or get on the property ladder? Blundells have a 'pay us what we’re worth' offer, so why not give them a go? If you fancy releasing some equity from your home, we have people advertising who can help you. Or if you’re suffering money and legal worries, the Citizens Advice Bureau may be a good place to start (see page 48). Hold a door open! I read somewhere that doing good deeds makes you feel better, simply holding open a door can make you feel good! There is medical evidence to back this up, so even from a selfish perspective this makes sense! Find your own way to help someone out. Volunteer your time: Many of the local charities and community groups would love an extra pair of hands, why not volunteer down at Monkey Park. They’ve got loads of ideas and welcome any help you can give them? The Brampton Bicycle Club could use some new coaches when they restarts in the Spring, give them a call. Have more fun: Pubs, clubs, societies, whatever takes your fancy there's loads going on in the area - why not try some out and see if they're for you. Whatever you decide, keep it simple, achievable and start today!

erry Caton, owner of Londis and Chatsworth Road Post Office, inspired by his son Jonjo’s need for rehearsal space with his band “Our Saving Day”, has recently opened The Warehouse Rehearsal Studio, a brand new music rehearsal and recording studio on Chatsworth Road. You’d struggle to find it, if you didn’t know where to look. The thoroughly modern rehearsal studio is set in a new courtyard behind the concertina gates between Londis and Peak Pharmacy at 622 Chatsworth Road.

“It took us ages to clear it out, but once we’d finished it was great - you can see the end result on Youtube. (https://www.youtube.com/ user/oursavingday/videos) We then started talking about the lack of rehearsal space locally.” “I had a plan in mind to convert the old warehouse space behind the shop to offices” says Terry who owns Londis and the buildings behind. “I wanted to maximise the space and needed a viable business. The idea of a rehearsing and recording space really appealed as it brings something new to the area.”

The studio consists of three fully soundproofed and acoustically dampened rooms that are available to rent and are easily accessible on a ground floor level, benefiting from free WiFi and USB charging ports throughout.

The result is very contemporary.

All the rooms have new equipment with Mapex drum kits, Fender combo amps, Marshall cabs, DAD PA systems with Allen & Heath mixers, and also benefit from TC electronic Bass amps which have the tone print system that allow you to download effects to an app and use with the amplifier. The equipment also being available for external hire. The facilities also include a full recording studio for producing recordings, live video sessions, mixing and mastering.

The studios are available from 12.30 to 9:30pm and are ideal for local bands, musicians or music schools looking for suitable space to hold lessons, rehearse or record.

Jonjo Caton (lead guitarist for local band Our Saving Day) explains how the project came about. “Our band were looking for an old derelict space to shoot a video for our single ‘The Ageing Process’ and came up with idea of using the empty warehouse space behind my dad’s shop on Chatsworth Road.”

Calling all Guilds!

The Battle of Chesterfield needs you!! Words: Paul Chapman

n 15 May 2016 in New Square, Chesterfield will celebrate the 750th anniversary of the Battle of Chesterfield, a battle between Robert Ferrers, Earl of Derby and Henry of Almain, nephew to Henry III and the men of Brampton marched into town to defend the church wall. And, we are calling on the men of Brampton and Chesterfield to join in the fun (it will better fun than the original battle, I can promise you that!), gather friends and neighbours and form Guilds to support the event. Guilds could be groups of friends, neighbours, people from community groups and societies or businesses, forming, coming up with a name and registering on the 750 Chesterfield website. Forming a guild is free and requires no additional commitment, however, it would be fantastic to have the support of the guilds at the event on the 15 May! Peter Grey, added “It would be great to see Guilds marching into town on the day, complete with a Guild banner and medieval dress supporting the event. We’ve got 21 guilds signed up so far and I’d love to have 50 signed up for the event. Every guild that signs up shows the community getting behind the event”. All guilds will receive their guild certificate! A massive thank you to the guilds already registered; see following page. To raise funds to stage the event there’s a Medieval Feast planned for the 11 March, at Old Hall School, complete with food, music and dancing – why not come along or better still bring your Guild and get them in the mood for celebration, the cost is £10 per person and must be booked in advance, see advert opposite.

Peter added “It would be great if stall holders could support the medieval theme by sporting suitable attire”.

What was a medieval guild? It was a group of craftsmen or traders who all did the same thing – leather working, cloth working, whatever – clubbing together. The original medieval ones might be the only people allowed to do that particular trade in town. They would also do things like loan money to each other, or help their members in illness and hard times, maybe supporting widows and orphans. They would organise the training of apprentices. And they would also share their good times – they would have regular get-togethers and feasts. They might even have an official building. The Peacock in the Market may have been a guild hall. In Chesterfield there were at least four guilds. There was the Guild of Merchants; there was the Guild of the Smiths; there was the Guild of St Helen; and there was the Guild of the Blessed Mary, which seems to have been a kind of corporation charity, looking after its members but also after the interests of Chezzie townspeople. They each had their own management structure: one was headed by an Elder Father, with a Dean and Stewards assisting. Others had a Master and Brethren.

The committee is also looking for businesses or people to sponsor the event. Peter added “we’ve got loads of excellent ideas for entertainment during the day, but they cost money so we’re looking for help to cover the costs! s a nation where chefs reach celebrity status and TV cookery programmes pull in huge audiences, we ought to be a nation with a proud reputation for cookery, but research suggests thats not the case. Fewer people know how to prepare good wholesome food, from fresh ingredients, and it’s affecting our health…

Learning to cook or trying something new can be daunting, but at Coghlans Cookery School, in Sheepbridge, they have a range of courses to help get you started or to help you improve.

“We specialise in outside catering, weddings, parties, celebrations, corporate events, from an intimate dining experience in your home to 500 plus guests at a major function.”

I first stumbled across Coghlans on Google, when looking for a cookery course gift. When I turned up to collect the Indian cookery course voucher I was amazed at the collection of food and drink businesses in the unassuming commercial unit. Front of shop there’s a fully stocked wine merchant, full to the brim with fine wines and spirits, they’ve dining rooms available to book and at the rear is a high spec kitchen classroom, with the latest Miele products, which has been set up by Masterchef Simon Lilley. “For people who are enthusiastic about food” says Simon, “we’re sure to have something they’d enjoy.” The school was unique in the area when it was set up in 2001 and they offer a number of cookery courses; half days teaching Indian or Italian cooking, Chocolate making, British baking or Tapas to name a few. “During the course we will prepare three or four dishes together, after the Indian course people go home with a personally prepared takeaway for the family” explains Simon. “On a full day course we cook a dinner or gastro type meal, including dessert. And we run an eight week evening course of general cooking methods, focussing on a different topic each week; bread making, soups, preparing, filleting and cooking fish, poultry cooking, vegetables and chocolate desserts”. “We also host corporate team building days with a difference, for up to 30 people” Simon explained, “Businesses spend the morning working in a meeting room on a particular business issue and in the afternoon take part Page 26 www.s40local.co.uk

Although they see around 5000 people each year for their courses, there are many other ways to sample their creativity, without having to cook it yourself!

“People can book a table at one of our pop up restaurant events” says Simon. “We have themed events throughout the year, where we prepare a three or four course meal and accompany it with perfect wines, with tutors who will attend the event and talk you through the wines selection.”

“For people who are enthusiastic about food” says Simon, “we’re sure to have something they’d enjoy.” “We have a Pop Up Restaurant Lunch every second Thursday of the month, a Reception drink followed by a 15 minute cooking demonstration and a seasonal three course meal.” “We manufacture our own Gift Packaging and can create bespoke labels for wines. This service is often taken advantage of by businesses looking for products to buy for clients. We have helped educate local sports teams to maintain a healthy diet, have had TV chefs such as John Cristoff Novelli at the premises to run courses, seen celebrities through the cookery school and have a huge range of gifts available for delivery online”. “Our wines aren’t all about price, they are all good quality and different from the bottles you’d pick up at the supermarket. We have great relationships with our suppliers and many of them call in to help with tastings on our dinner nights”

Simon started working for Coghlans a number of years ago. Prior to this he’d studied at Castle College, Sheffield, worked for a brief spell at Claridges and at various London businesses before moving home to Sheffield. He’s even waited on for the Queen at Sheffield Town Hall and was delighted to be elected as one of the UK’s Masterchefs, no relationship to the TV programme; it’s an award where chefs are nominated by other chefs for helping pass on their knowledge. “We’re also very excited about our bus!” added Simon. “We’re restoring a single storey Leyland Leopard bus, it’s due back from the body shop soon, so we can start on the interior fit. This will give us a fully mobile platform from which to demonstrate our skills and serve 20 covers in the restaurant car. Chicken Chasseur Serves four as a main dish. 50g 1.5kg 10g 100g 3 tbs 250ml 200g

Butter Chicken cut for sauté eg: whole chicken cut up into portions Chopped shallot Button mushrooms Dry white wine Gravy Tomatoes (concasse eg: blanched, peeled, deseeded and chopped) Chopped parsley and tarragon

Place butter in frying pan on a fairly hot stove.

Season chicken and place in the pan.

Cook to golden brown on both sides. Cover with lid and cook (stove or oven 180 deg) for 1 hour or until 70 degrees for the chicken.

In a sperate pan add shallot, cover and cook on a gentle heat for 1 to 2 min without colouring. Add washed and sliced mushrooms, cover and cook gently for 3 to 4 min again without colouring.

Drain off fat, add white wine and reduce by half.

Add gravy and tomatoes and simmer for 5 minutes.

Season again if required and pour over the chicken, sprinkle with chopped parsley and tarragon and serve.

A Flying Visit Words: Trevor The Ink Pictures: Peter Garrity

t the end of last year Chesterfield had some special visitors. One of course was Santa (we hope he visited all of our readers); but another much more exceptional visitor was a bird almost never seen in England, a Crag Martin, which took up residence around the crooked spire. The Crag Martin attracted other visitors â&#x20AC;&#x201C; dozens and dozens of birdwatchers from right across the UK. Birdwatchers and wildlife fans will already know all about the bird and its visit of course, but we thought the rest of us could do with an explanation of all the fuss. Our unexpected visitor was a youngish Eurasian Crag Martin, which is normally found across southern Europe and north west Africa. It was probably blown off course by the strong winds we had back in November. Crag Martins are part of the swallow family of bird species which are found all over the world except Antarctica. The family includes a

couple of dozen different species of swallows and martins (though not swifts, which look very similar but are not related). Swallows and martins mostly live by eating insects which they catch in mid-air. Remember the film Karate Kid where the kid has to try catching flies with chopsticks? That's basically how these birds make a living. Their wing shapes â&#x20AC;&#x201C; curved and pointy - and their beautiful, lightweight, aerodynamic bodies are evolved to help them move at speed and be agile enough to catch flying bugs. Our Crag Martin made doing this look dead easy, though its speed and the way it could switch direction made it hard for people to get good photos. But it was sometimes possible to see its sandy greyish-brownish undersides and also see the distinctive white spots on its tail feathers. Another bird our visiting experts quickly identified was the White Swan, the public house just opposite the church. Many a

twitcher (another name for birdwatchers) called in to investigate, where it was discovered that you could get a good view of where the Crag Martin had last been seen while you were sitting warm and dry with a snack and a pint: something you can't always do while birding! The twitchers were a friendly crowd – identifiable by their all-weather gear (mostly in greens and greys, to act as camo we guess) and by their battered but impressive collection of long camera lenses, and many obviously knew each other well. In addition to the Crag Martin, the birders also spotted a peregrine and a kestrel flying near the spire, though these sightings wouldn't have been a 'Mega' (a twitcher term for very rare sighting) for anyone – though possibly the White Swan was a 'Lifer', which means someone's first ever spot of something, rare or not. After ten or so days our Crag Martin left town. It had been spotted at The Spire, at Tesco, and at the Proact stadium where it apparently watched Chesterfield lose 2-1 to Oldham.

It was the first Crag Martin ever seen in Derbyshire, and only the tenth ever seen in the UK. It was the rarest bird seen at Chesterfield since a stranded Albatross was rescued by the RSPCA back in 1952. For anyone worried, the Crag Martin is described as rare simply because it’s not often seen here - it’s actually doing OK in the wild. It’s not endangered. For anyone curious, it’s not true that swallows and martins mate and sleep as well as eat in mid-air - that’s an old wives' tale - it’s swifts that do that! (PS: don’t try this at home.) Many thanks to Peter Garrity for the smashing photos, one of which shows our Crag Martin about to do its stuff and actually catch an insect on the wing. We got in touch with Peter via the helpful Rare Bird Alert web site (www. rarebirdalert.co.uk) that serves the birding community; head over there if you want to learn more about this sighting or birding news in general. Friends of Somersall Park: Community Lantern Parade Back in December, the Friends of Somersall Park (FOSP) held their second Lantern Parade. On the night it was estimated 800 people turned up to walk with their lanterns from the Walton Road entrance to Oakfield Avenue and enjoy the band. hesterfield's latest shining star has to be the new Queen's Park Sports Centre, which opened its doors on Tuesday 5 January.

Funded by £6.725M from Chesterfield Borough Council, £2.5M from Chesterfield College, £2M from the National Lottery for the Sport England’s Strategic Facilities Fund and £25,000 from England Squash. Councillor Amanda Serjeant, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for town centre and visitor economy said: “I am proud that we have made this investment in a new state-of-the-art sports centre at a time when many councils are having to make difficult decisions about reducing funding for leisure activities or closing facilities.” Students of the Chesterfield College Sport and Wellbeing Academy will have use of training rooms and the sports facilities alongside members of the public, as at the previous Queen’s Park Sports Centre. Stuart Cutforth, Chesterfield College principal said: “We’re delighted we could invest in this exciting modern health and leisure facility. The partnership approach benefits both local residents and students.” I attended a Chesterfield Champions meeting at the centre and was impressed by the appearance, the place is bright and airy, a world apart from the old centre which is due to be demolished during 2016. n 2 February Brampton Therapy Centre celebrates it's 1st anniversary at 349 Chatsworth Road by offering FREE treatments to Alzheimer sufferers and their carers. Booking is essential. Brampton Therapy Centre will have a donation box available and will also make a financial donation directly to the Alzheimer’s Society. Ellena Outram, Clinic Director explained, ‘Dementia is very close to our hearts after my mum passed away in February 2012 from the disease, so supporting this charity for our first anniversary seemed a fitting tribute. We understand, from first-hand experience, how stressful and tiring the illness can be, so wanted to offer some comfort for the person with dementia and for their carers. We really hope the local community will get behind us with these events, either by spreading the word or offering to sit with the dementia sufferer whilst the carer attends a session’. Chesterfield RSPB: Update The Chesterfield RSPB is a local group who support and work within the national RSPB organisation to further the conservation of nature and the environment. The group holds its monthly meetings at Eastwood Hall, near the main Council Office building in Chesterfield. The meetings provide members with the opportunity to meet and discuss group issues, report on field trips and plan future activities. Meetings also include opportunities to buy discounted bird food, raffles and a guest presenter slot for lectures on a variety of subjects. Sixteen Challenges in 2016 Supporting Alzheimer’s Society Destination Chesterfield Manager, Dom Stevens, is set to complete sixteen challenges in 2016 for the Alzheimer’s Society and raise at least £1616 throughout the year. The first challenge started on 1 January with Dom giving up alcohol for 6 months. The sixteen challenges include Dom’s first ultra marathon, first open water swim, first triathlon, a 50 mile cycle ride, a marathon and many more. Dom Stevens said: “I am training hard and supporting this charity for two reasons. One because of the memories of my grandma and the difficulties she experienced with dementia in later life. It was tough, as a 13 year old boy, to understand why someone you really loved and cared for didn't recognise you anymore.” “Secondly for my mother in law who is moving through the stages of this horrible disease, and the stresses and strains it puts on everyone in the family. "Going to school should be enjoyable, but for Sarah it was her worst nightmare, so she refused to go!!" t some point in all our lives we need a bit of help and advice and the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) offer free, confidential, impartial and independent advice and information.

So if you started the year wondering how to make changes or improvements to certain aspects of your life Neil Storer, Chief Officer and Julie Astell, Service Support Manager from the Chesterfield CAB might have the answer. The services they offer are vast, primarily supporting people with financial issues; debt, legal and tax, benefit entitlement, housing, consumer dispute, employment but also health and disability, energy efficiency, right through to support for relationship breakdowns, bereavement or someone calling in to say my neighbours hedge is too high… Advice is provided via the centre, located at 6-8 Broad Pavement, on the road that runs between the Donut on Saltergate and Knifesmithgate or on the phone at limited times during the day. Julie explained “We have a team who assess enquires to establish what type of guidance is required, and then identify the people with the right skills. “Many queries can be dealt with by the front line team, all of whom have attended full training to use the national reference guides we have built up with detailed answers to most situations. All advice is monitored by full time supervisors and we’re regularly audited by CAB. “And it’s not just advice, the CAB advisers can help negotiate with companies or service providers such as creditors or to appeal against decisions, for example, welfare benefit claims, will write letters to or phone companies

and service providers on behalf of clients, help prioritise problems, eg: to sort out which debts are most important, help with form filling, eg: to claim for welfare benefits and represent clients in court and at tribunals. “The service we offer and the role we play in people’s lives provides us with a unique insight into the issues affecting the local community, and through this we establish projects to support people and areas with specific needs.” Neil, Julie and the team also manage Outreach sessions in GP surgeries, children's centres and family centres plus mental health advocacy services, accessed through referrals or nursing support at the Harrington unit at Royal Hospital.

Julie Astell CAB In the community they run a financial capability project, support Pathways homeless charity, Derbyshire domestic sexual abuse services and spend a significant amount of time getting people back into housing. “It’s important we ensure people have the core skills to keep a home once they have it back, to understand how money is controlled, to be confident with budgeting” says Julie. “We are there for the instances when people simply don’t know where to turn for advice. “We have a mixture of paid staff and volunteers to run services. 60 to 70 percent of staff are volunteers; retired people, people

retraining and wanting to pick up new skills, law students looking for work experience, we really do have a wide range of skills on offer.” The team support volunteers and offer training programs to help build skills, and can accommodate volunteers whatever commitment they want to give. If you have some free time and could help please give them a call, they would love to hear from you. “The role is about making a difference to people’s lives and to the local community” says Julie, “it’s so rewarding to see the change in a person's body language when they leave having received support. “People put their trust in the CAB and quite often we just need to listen. We can’t offer support in every instance but we can point people in the right direction, there is support available in most situations.”

Case Study: “I was getting nowhere until I got your help...” Bill, a retired pensioner on a low income, had hired a builder to complete some essential home repairs. He was distressed when the work was completed to a very poor standard. The building firm refused to inspect their work and made demands for payment. After advising Bill and the firm of his legal rights under the consumer law, all requests for payment were withdrawn. Bill is now having the work completed by a builder who is part of the County Council's “ trusted trader” scheme.

It surprised me to find out that the first Citizens Advice Bureau opened on 4 September 1939, the day after war was declared. Run by volunteers from public buildings and private houses, advisers dealt with problems relating to the loss of ration books, homelessness and evacuation. They also helped locate missing relatives and prisoners of war. Debt quickly became a key issue as income reduced due to call-ups. Today citizens advice is a charity, independent of government and income comes from local borough councils, clinical commissioning groups, big lottery fund etc. The charity has 3,400 community locations, staffed by 22,000 trained volunteers, visits to the website exceeds 11 million per year and 2 million people come to the service face to face or over the phone for advice.

Winter is the time to reflect on last season’s harvests. Consider which fruit and vegetables performed well and also those that were a disappointment. Think of what will be grown again and also if a new approach to growing a particular vegetable is required. Should you be trying something new or perhaps selecting a different variety for the forthcoming growing season?

This is the time of year to plan for next, with seed and nursery catalogues. Don’t be overambitious though – only plan for plants where there’s space, or steal yourself to removing under-performing ones (or dig them out on a nice day, which will allow time for the soil to settle before spring).

If you have a pond with fish in it, make sure it never freezes over completely (but don’t break ice by hitting it, which may well hurt the fish); a rubber ball can be floated in it to make a hole to allow access to oxygen.

Keep an eye on any stored produce, bulbs and tubers to make sure the mice haven’t found them. Hanging them in a sack is usually a good way of both storing and protecting them, but remember that mice are amazing climbers.

This is the time to give your pots and trays a thorough clean to get rid of any over-wintering pests and diseases. If you have a greenhouse or frames a good clean of the glass, frames and floor will mean that you can get off to a good start in March when it is time to really get started sowing your seeds for this season.

If it snows heavily, knock it off or gently shake branches to prevent them breaking under the weight. Try not to stand underneath while you do this!

Check to see if any paths, fences etc. need routine maintenance, and prepare to do it on any nice sunny, dry days.

Also clean and (where applicable) sharpen tools; book the lawnmower in for a service.

If you have facilities, the early sowing of some seeds will benefit your later crops by giving your plants more time to ripen. These include: tomatoes, peppers and onions from January and lettuce, beetroot, peas, broad beans and radishes from February. Crops like microgreens and sprouting seeds can be grown at any time.

10. Keep everywhere clear of debris, which can harbour diseases and harmful organisms. But try not to be too fussy; old logs and pile of leaves tucked away somewhere are excellent overwintering spots for essential wildlife.
