Intro Hi and welcome to the Autumn edition. In this edition we list all the events of the Chatsworth Road Festival, which runs from Thursday 29 September to Sunday 2 October. Together with the usual What's On events this month that's a whole 12 pages of events, so I apologise if things feel a little light of copy but when there's so much going on, something has to give! The Festival is the sixth since kicking off in 2011 and the Chatsworth Road businesses, churches, pubs, cafes and venues have put together one-off events for the weekend. Many putting on special menus or offers to tempt you in. At the same time as the Festival (or Celebration ... see page 4) the Kids n Cancer Half Marathon route will be taking runners along Chatsworth Road on the Sunday (2 Oct), along Barker Lane, left up Old Hall Road before turning left back down Old Road to join Chatsworth Road.

This is a great opportunity to cheer on the runners as they make their way around town raising money for charity as they go. If you're free on the day, please try and give them a little support if you can. I'm writing this two days before the kids go back to school, summer holidays are over and with all the fuss over the 'celebrities' joining Strictly Come Dancing, it feels like the run up to Christmas has started, just Halloween and Bonfire Night to break up the Christmas shopping! We'll be starting the Christmas gift guide next month to encourage you into our local independent shops for your shopping, so look out for that and if you're a business, let us know if you'd like an advert and listing. Bllimey.

CHATSWORTH ROAD
CELEBRATION ENJOYING LIVING & WORKING ON & AROUND CHATSWORTH ROAD
FROM THURSDAY 29th SEPTEMBER UNTIL SUNDAY 2nd OCTOBER
T
he Chatsworth Road Festival or Celebration, as it's now known, kicks off for the sixth year over the weekend of Thursday 29 Sept to Sunday 2 Oct.
The original festival came about following a conversation between a customer and Dierdre Gage who ran Created Gallery on Chatsworth Road. A weekend of events focuses on the people, facilities and businesses in the community, it's about taking stock or celebrating where we live and what we have on our doortstep. It would be great to see people making an effort to visit a local business or place they've not been to before and meeting up with friends and family to spend time together. The list of events that span the next seven pages should enable you to do just that, so please take a look through. If you visit just one new place the Festival Group will feel they've succeeded. A few people have commented that it doesn't really feel like a Festival, having no village green in which to congregate or central location - I know what they mean. When I think Festival, it's brass bands, beer tents and people all in one place. This is why you will see the word 'Celebration' used this year together with 'Festival', it's perhaps more fitting for what goes on. Anyway, whatever words are used there is no excuse not to get involved.
Thanks to the organising committee who throughout the year talk to businesses, churches, schools and local people to encourage them to put on an event or get involved. Many businesses put on special offers across the Festival so look out for these and make the most of them. All the time put in by the Festival Committee is voluntary they are not paid in any way for their time. With regard to funds, thanks are due to Councillors Ron Mihaly and Keith Morgan for arranging payment to the group from the Councils Community Forum pot, to the team at Minuteman Print for providing competitive pricing for the guides and to Kelly Bond at S40 Local for all the time and effort she has put into designing the guides and posters, updating the map and all the other materials to support the Festival. Last year some used the events to raise money for charity, ÂŁ400 being donated in total. If you want to get involved in the organising, the group are always looking out for new volunteers, just get in touch through S40 Local. Lastly have fun and don't forget to post your pic on social media and spread the word. S40 Local Chatsworthroadfestival #chatsworthroadfestival #sfourtylocal

Inspired to move more? But can't face it? Lianne Oldale (below) from Chatsworth Chiropractic Clinic may be able to help. Words: Paul Chapman
I
f you've spent time over the summer sitting on the sofa watching the Rio Olympics and cheering on Great Britain's 67 medals, perhaps you're feeling inspired to get up and exercise? If so, how many of us have physical niggles that stop us from getting started? Well, Lianne Oldale from Chatsworth Chiropractic Clinic is just the person to get you started. Lianne provides Sports Therapy and Strength and Conditioning (S&C), exercise prescription specifically to improve athletic performance, helping with injury prevention and proper mechanics within sports performance, but it’s not unique to just the elites, it can benefit us all. Lianne has a MSc in Science from Sheffield Hallam University, specialising in Sports Science and is accredited by the UK Strength and Conditioning Association (UKSCA) as an S&C Coach. Lianne came to Chatsworth Chiropractic Clinic through her friend Kirsten who works there. Having worked previously at Sheffield United, Nike and the English Institute of Sport for ten years, she was looking to work for herself. Eighteen months ago she joined the multidisciplinary team at Chatsworth Chiropractic Clinic, where they cover all aspects of patient care for physical ailments, from everyday living problems to more specific sports injuries. “I prescribe sports massage for general aches and pains, and maintenance massage” explains Lianne. “It’s about fixing problems. I see a number of runners every four weeks, knowing it's better to see me for a maintenance message and stay in shape, rather than sustain an injury and need treatment.”
Page 28 www.s40local.co.uk
“Sports massage and S&C complement each other perfectly. People can come to us with a small injury, I will assess what’s happening and review movement patterns. “A typical knee injury may be down to the way we use our muscles in everyday life. For example, when we walk upstairs we tend to use our toes and dash, which encourages use of the wrong muscle set. We should be slowing down and using our bottom muscles to push our weight up the steps. “I can also work with people on specific sports performance, I had a client who runs for Barnsley Harriers who had reached a plateau in his performance. He came to me for S&C work and was amazed at the results. He'd been thinking that he just needed to run more to improve, but the right S&C guidance really did enable him to progress. “Many of the problems we see are due to people's working patterns, we’re simply not designed to sit down at a desk for nine hours a day - sitting is the new smoking, it has a huge impact on our health. "We need to move, we’re designed to move and if we don’t it leads to poor posture, weight gain and our lymphatic system doesn’t work effectively (the lymphatic system is a network of tissues and organs that help rid the body of toxins, waste and other unwanted materials).
"‘I don't have time’ is a phrase we all use far too often, especially where exercise is concerned, but by making the time we’re helping ourselves enjoy a more active life so we can do the things we want to do. "Active parents help their kid's futures, they see what you do as being part of everyday life and are more likely to follow your example. “I really enjoy what I do. I love to see results, my job is to fix problems and get people active and mobile again. If I’m seeing people every week something isn’t working so I need to change my approach. But on the flip side I do get people who are OK and just want to come in!” laughs Lianne. It's easy to see this enjoyment, she is passionate about her treatments and about establishing the foundations so people can achieve their long term aims. About setting small changes that are realistic and about achieving change. Call into Chatsworth Chiropractic for a chat if you are struggling to get started, one of the friendly team is sure to have the right advice to help. Take your S40 Local along for 10% off the price of your initial consultation.
"Small changes can make a big difference. “If you're a desk worker, you can help your posture - whilst sitting, put your shoulder blades back and down - imagine your head above your lungs, do this five times a day and hold this position for a few seconds. "I know of people who don’t take a packed lunch to work, just so they make time to leave their desk, go out and buy lunch. "Stay refreshed and drink plenty of water. "My best posture tip and one that's easy to incorporate is to stand on one leg whilst brushing your teeth, which helps your core which in turn helps posture!" There are a number of factors that affect our health and wellbeing and many ways we either help or hinder. Lianne’s role is very wide and looks at the whole body through movement and how we can help ourselves. “Exercise improves mental health by releasing endorphins” explains Lianne. “And if you exercise outdoors you also benefit from vitamin D from sunlight. During the winter months some people don’t see any daylight, leaving for work and returning in the dark, so just getting out for a lunchtime walk for fifteen minutes may give you the vitamin D shot you need, and help stave off depression.”

Somersall Rangers FC FA Charter Club Standard Club of the Year 2016. Words: Paul Chapman
S
“Coaching focuses on the Four Corner Model which considers, technical ability, physical wellbeing, social and physiological aspects. It looks at the whole person to bring them on, even the language used when coaching is considered to help encourage and be positive about progress.
Somersall Rangers FC has exceeded, winning the prestigious status of ‘FA Charter Standard Club of the Year 2015/16’ at this year’s FA Community Awards. Presented by McDonald’s, the county award recognises the club’s progression and how hard it works to create a friendly and fun environment for all players involved.
I asked Darren’s son James a few questions about being part of Somersall Rangers?
omersall Rangers is one of the oldest junior football teams, formed back in 1961. Five years ago the club was down to just three teams and the committee had two ways to go - let the teams run their course or work hard as a committee and get the club back to where it belongs as a force in junior football. Today, grassroots football has succeeded.
Dale Spragg, who nominated the club for the award, said: “Five years ago the club dropped to just three teams. To revive the club, volunteers organised soccer schools to give local children the opportunity to play football and progress in to the club’s teams” The club now has over twenty teams representing them in the Rowsley and District Youth League and Sheffield & District Junior League. Progressive and forward-thinking, the committee have devoted themselves to develop the club and continue its legacy. Darren Hirst is one of the Dad’s who got involved after the club asked for parents who were interested in helping? Today he's a qualified FA Level 1 Coach and his son James plays in one of the Under 9’s teams. “Helping out has been fantastic” says Darren, “it’s great to think that we’re developing homegrown talent. Who knows what level the kids will end up playing at in the future. I’d like to think that in years to come some of them will be coming back to volunteer to referee and help out." The club has in excess of 20 teams with players from age 4 to 18 years, training takes place for each team at locations across Chesterfield and each team has a dedicated group of coaches that work with the players. The feeder squad consists of kids from four years old and works to develop key skills and get kids playing as a team. “The whole thing is largely non-competitive” explains Darren. “The kids do play in a league with local teams but no results are kept. Instead they amass respect points, these are given for things like how they treat the referee, how parents behave on the touch line and areas that show that the teams have respect for the other team and officials. During play, for instance, if we’re winning heavily, at half time you give the opponents chance to bring on extra players to even things up. Adopting this philosophy won us our first trophy in our first season in the Rowsley and District Youth League for under 7. ” Page 32 www.s40local.co.uk
“The kids love it” says Darren, “They are so keen and the friendly, safe, age appropriate training is all about bringing on skills and developing that lifelong involvement in sport.”
"Playing football has given me confidence and I'm not afraid to go up to people who I don't know and ask if I can play too. The beauty of football is that it's played all over the world and you don't need to know many foreign words to get involved. "I can play in any position but my favourite is in midfield so I get to run the length of the pitch! "Playing for Somersall Rangers has improved my skills and I enjoy being part of the club. At the end of the season we have an awards night where we get trophies and our new kit. I would love to get the 'Parents Player' award but my Dad can't vote for me." The club has risen from the ashes, it’s great to learn that the under 9 Blues have had some success in tournaments this year. Runners up in Ashover, then made it to the semi finals in Brampton and came away with a win. The Clay Cross Under 9’s Trophy. If reading this has inspired you or your kids to get involved, the club would love to hear from you. Darren coaches the under 9 Somersall Blues at Holmebrook Valley Park on Thursday evenings. Details of the teams and locations are on the website below. Thanks must also go to sponsors, Arrow ECS sponsor the Under 9 Blues kit and Air Care Compressed Services Ltd sponsor the training jackets. Liam Rooney, Football Development Manager at Derbyshire County FA: “We are fortunate to have so many fantastic clubs and volunteers who help us strive towards providing better footballing opportunities for young players. We know how much work goes in on a weekly basis and The FA Community Awards allow us to say thank you." GCSE exams are changing… How will it affect your child’s grade? Jo Linthwaite (Kip McGrath) As we all know the GCSE Grades your child achieves will be the entry point for the rest of their life in first career choices, initial job opportunities and essentially also in their confidence and how they view themselves. Next summer there are major changes making higher grades more difficult to achieve. This month we will tell you about the GCSE English changes. 1. There will be an exam at the end of the two years of which 60% of the mark will count towards the final grade. 20% of the exam marks are given for spelling, punctuation and grammar. How’s your semi colon usage? This will suit some students but many are unused to the formality of exams and suffer from exam stress which inhibits their performance on the day. Coursework will count for much less in the final grade. 2. There will be numbers for grades now, not letters with the highest being a 9 and it will be more difficult to achieve than a current A*! 3. The syllabus also has some major changes. • Students will have to have read a much wider range of literature • There is much more emphasis on poetry. They will have to know at least 15 poems from at least 5 different writers. • They will have to study a Shakespeare play in depth
• Much more emphasis on reading comprehension skills and analysis of unseen texts. • Students will need to be able to demonstrate a wider range of writing skills. • A focus on summarising, evaluating and comparing texts. • A focus on inference and deduction. Got a headache yet?! Here at Kip we have highly trained and experienced tutors who are up to speed with the new changes. They are up for the challenge and would love to help guide your child through the new courses. It is going to be much harder for students to show the examiners their true potential. If you have some concerns about your child’s level of achievement in the new English (or Maths) GCSE then bring them down to us for an assessment and see what we can do to support them. On average we take a current Grade D student to a Grade B and in some cases a Grade A. We can give them some good exam techniques so they hit the ground writing in the final exam. Invest in their future now and they will thank you forever!

Performance
G&S Society: Chesterfield Words: Penny Fairs
O
ne of Chesterfield’s foremost musical societies, founded 45 years ago, is returning to the Pomegranate Theatre in October to stage Iolanthe. Chesterfield Gilbert and Sullivan Society was formed in March 1971 with the aim of forming a Society dedicated to promoting and performing the works of William Schwenck Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan. During its formative years, the group staged concerts to raise funds and after ten years, had amassed enough money to mount their first full G and S production, The Mikado, at the then Civic Theatre. Two founder members of the Society, Val Crick and Peter Flint, performed in The Mikado all those years ago and will also be taking part in the 2016 production of Iolanthe. For them and the rest of their number, the appeal of G & S is in the appreciation of Gilbert’s wit and the challenge of singing Sullivan’s music in four part harmony music which compliments Gilbert’s words to perfection. W S Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan worked together from the 1870s in partnership with the impresario Richard D’Oyly Carte who built the Savoy Theatre in 1881 specifically for performances of their works. During their partnership of 25 years, 14 operas were produced making them the Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice of their day. The high quality of both the libretto and the music is the major factor in explaining why their works have stood the test of time and remain popular today. Chesterfield G and S Society have performed the majority of the Savoy operas at least once at the Pomegranate Theatre over the last 30 years. Iolanthe pokes fun at the political and legal establishment of the day and in view of the current political situation, audiences can expect some topical references. Director Nic Wilson has also drawn on Tony Blair’s fairly recent lively encounter with members of the WI for inspiration this year. Iolanthe opens with the fairies missing their friend who was banished 25 years earlier for disobeying fairy laws and is now living at the bottom of a stream. They persuade the Fairy Queen to recall Iolanthe from exile and learn that she has a son, Strephon, who is in love with Phyllis, the ward of the Lord Chancellor. Unfortunately for Strephon, the Lord
Page 38 www.s40local.co.uk
Chancellor and the entire House of Peers also have designs on Phyllis and resolve to thwart his marriage plans. However, the fairies have other ideas and, in a stance against the aristocracy, propose Strephon as an MP which results in unexpected outcomes for many. With its stirring overture, wonderful melodies including the Nightmare song and The Peers’ Chorus, and a cast which features an unusual guardsman, ladies who never grow old and a prospective Member of Parliament who is half a fairy, Iolanthe is not to be missed! Over thirty people will appear on stage and many of the principal performers are well known to local audiences. Stephen Godward who directed the Society’s 2015 production will be taking the part of the Lord Chancellor, Julie Currey is Iolanthe, two former members of the Society’s Youth Academy, Laura Watkin and Nathan Blood, appear as Phyllis and Strephon and Judith Hill is the indomitable Fairy Queen.. For Andrew Marples, the Society’s fourth Musical Director, Iolanthe will be his 17th stage production. He will be directing a full orchestra comprising local musicians in addition to the singers on stage, aided by the Society’s talented accompanist, Chris Flint, who also features in the orchestra.

Ever Changing Colour. Words: Paul Chapman
T
his month Tracy Oldfield and Chameleon celebrate a year in their new home at 420 Chatsworth Road.
The shop is a dazzling display of colour, packed with balls of wool of every colour and style, many from key British Suppliers. “We pride ourselves on good customer service and are thrilled to stock West Yorkshire Spinners wool which is 100% British. We also have some yarns from Manos Del Uruguay, a fair trade organisation supporting women in Uruguay. It’s exciting to be supporting both companies.” says Tracy. “We stock a great range of patterns, plus knitting/crochet related haberdashery from needles and hooks to ribbons and buttons, all the necessary accessories.” Chameleon is a great place to pick up gifts, you can choose from a range of handmade accessories and knitting equipment for the knitter in the family. The business, previously Image and Colour Emporium, traded for 4 years behind The Real Ale Corner, focusing on ladies colour consultations, which establishes your skin tone and provides a guide to the most flattering colours to wear and make yourself look and feel fantastic. From the start Tracy held a range of accessories to complement the colour schemes to great effect including; handbags, belts, scarves. “I had the idea that I should access wool suppliers to enable us to knit garments alongside the consultations, to produce a design and colour specific to the individual. This lead to us selling wool directly to our customers. Today this has surpassed the consultations to become the mainstay of the business.” “We still undertake colour consultations upstairs and I sell bags and scarves to compliment tone and colour choices.” Tracy was keen to point out their range of accessories are carefully selected so people are buying unique pieces and the same items are not popping up at every occasion. The last bit of upstairs space is still home to Dominic Gage of Physio First.
Page 42 www.s40local.co.uk
Chameleon is definitely more than a shop, “we offer a social space for a number of craft groups who meet regularly and exchange ideas and thoughts on projects.” Tracy talks passionately about the social scene that has developed at the shop. Wednesday afternoon there's a knitting group from 1 to 4pm, with advice and assistance on knitting and crochet projects. The groups are more than just knitting though, they're about friendship and spending time with likeminded people. Thursday morning is Simply Socks - as the name suggests it's a session helping people knit socks, a great way to introduce knitting to people. I’m told it’s very addictive and portable, you only need a little knitting bag to carry around making it an easy project to pick up on the go. I’ve seen the business grow from a small start up with a great idea, to something much larger, evolving and establishing itself as the years have passed. Craft and vintage have seen a resurgence and creative activities have been proven to improve mental well-being. Many people are enjoying getting back to simpler things and having time away from screens. Chameleon embraces this ethos and encourages this in a thoroughly modern way, the range on offer is totally different to that of 70 years ago. Why not call in for yourself and see how things have moved on … but also stayed still, in a modern retro sort of way! If you’d like to learn how to knit or crochet, please come along and find out more or call Tracy on 01246 766953. Finally Tracy wanted to say a big thank you to customers old and new for their positive comments and continued support. “It’s great that people ‘shop local’ and keep us small businesses going!” says Tracy.

The Struggle of Mental Health Life through the eyes of Shauni-Jaye. Words: Shauni-Jaye
‘Smile on her face? Happy a little while ago? She always wished to grow up, But now she’s older, Things are so much colder, Colder than she ever could have imagined, This isn’t what she thought it would be like, Why didn’t anyone warn her? She cried to you for help, But you ignored her Told her to smile It looked better when she did. She didn’t bother after that. She did as you said, Smiled! But you're gone now. She says she’s okay, Hoping someone will look into her dull eyes, And just maybe, See through all of her lies. She cries every night, Because she knows, More than anyone in this world, Nothing will ever be good or the same again, And what makes it worse? You're not there, And you never will be again…’
L
iving your life whilst struggling with mental health problems can be one of the most difficult things to deal with. Most people feel alone, withdrawn from society, suicidal and like you can't be helped but I must tell you from personal experience that this is far from being true. People who struggle with these problems have different coping methods to deal with how they are feeling. This can range from anger, self-harm, and even alcohol or drug abuse. Unfortunately as much as these coping methods may help at the time they are not the answer. To cope with mental health problems your methods need to be positive. The best distraction is to do something with a purpose and a good outcome. Something you're good at is best. One of the biggest problems in this struggle is society. Mental health problems are invisible unlike many other illnesses. Mental health can be literally paralysing. Some days you don’t want to get out of bed or go out of the house, big crowds can cause panic attacks, this problem can hold you back just as much as any other serious illness. Mental health is invisible. These are words from a close friend of mine who has struggled with mental health her whole life. I asked “Can you describe to me what it is like to live your life with depression?” this was her answer: “Some days it can be debilitating, I don’t want to leave the house or get dressed. Sometimes that feeling can go on for days, sometimes weeks, sometimes just one day. This is something that I have had to deal with from being 13. Major events in my life tend to trigger me into a low state, this is when I can get extremely angry, I throw things, shout and just completely lose my rag. "Sometimes I can go completely the opposite way, this is when I will lock myself away and sometimes turn to self harm. "I wish that I had never turned to the coping methods I have, they can turn into an obsession and even a bad habit!” This inspirational person is in fact my Mum. Having struggled with depression most of my teenage life I found my coping methods, these are my horses, photography, writing and when things got really hard I turned to self-harm. I would like to include one of my writings from one of my lowest points (left), maybe, hopefully to people who have never had to experience depression this will give them a glimpse at just how hard it truly is… This is something I wrote after losing a very close friend out of my world. This was a very low point in my life, and in fact the above piece is very wrong. The reason I have included this in my words is to show people what it is like to be inside the head of someone with depression. Anyone who may be thinking about suicide or any of the other problems mentioned above please contact your doctor, take the first step to recovery and help them to help you. Please feel free to email me on shaunijaye@gmail.com. Thanks guys.

Business News News WASPI Women Against State Pension Inequality Monkey Park Repair Cafe
Are you a woman born in the 1950s? Did you expect to get your state pension at 60? WASPI – Women Against State Pension Inequality campaigns for you. Many women born in the 1950s started work at 15 years old, and have worked for more than 40 years paying into the NI fund expecting to retire at 60. Successive governments have increased the state pension age – firstly in 1995, then again in 2011. Unfortunately, no-one thought to tell us! Some women received letters only 2 years before their expected retirement date informing them that their state pension age was up to 6 years later! Some women still haven’t been informed at all!

Why don't we fix anything anymore? Words: Paul Chapman
A
few days ago I read an article about the iPhone. It was written by Matt Purdy and featured on pri.org if you’d like to check out the full article.
Basically it covered a tiny change that Apple had made to the iPhone: they changed the phone’s screws! No big deal you think, but have you heard of Pentalobe screws? No neither had I. What this means is that, if you want to get into your iPhone to repair it, unless you have a set of Pentalobe drivers, you can’t. OK so not that many of us have the knowledge needed to make any repairs but it makes it harder and harder to modify or tinker with the phone. Kyle Wiens, the founder and CEO of iFixit, says this; “We should have a presumption that we can get inside anything we own. It’s our product, not theirs, we paid them for it. They’ve made their money; we should be able to extend the product’s life if we need to.” This got me thinking. How many things do we throw out and purchase new? A friend of mine has on old tumble drier, the control knob has broken off, the cost of a new one is £38 plus VAT, the cost of the drier when new £99. What do you do in this situation? It seems more logical to buy a new one, but then you have the old one to dispose of, hello landfill, goodbye planet earth. My friend got some superglue out, this did the trick for a while, then one day stumbled upon the same model in a recycling yard… it was soon minus its control knob. Result. Recently, on a family weekend to Cambridge, my wife was on a marketing course whilst I entertained the kids and we happened upon the 2015 Science Festival. There were loads of things going on. Just ask me why we need GPS controlled tractors you wouldn’t believe it! Anyway, on our tour we came across Makespace. Makespace is a community workshop in Cambridge for making and fixing things, meeting people, working on projects and sharing skills.
The community run space, houses manufacturing and prototyping kit and provides the facilities to do amazing things. It is accessible to Members who pay a monthly subscription fee for which they get 24/7 access to the space to work on their projects, and can also organise events. On occasions, Makespace is also open to the public for events - we tagged onto a tour of the space which was fantastic. Makespace has three main aims – to support existing and new businesses, to raise awareness of and skills in engineering and manufacturing, and to provide a fun place for people to hangout and work on projects. The space has the latest rapid prototyping equipment such as 3D printers and laser cutter, CNC mill and CNC router, and kit for electronics, woodwork, jewellery-scale metal work, glasswork, and textiles. As a community resource, Makespace brings together a network of enthusiasts and innovators, the prototyping industry, consultants, businesses and educational communities in a mutually beneficial way. What Makespace also does is encourages us to take things apart, find out how they work and, if needed, to be able to fix them! Locally Monkey Park on Chester Street are doing something similar but on a much smaller scale. Each month they are holding a Repair Workshop run by Transition Chesterfield. Got something that’s broken? Then take it along and they’ll have a go at fixing it, for free (details in the What's On). I joked with them about the huge dent I have in the van… bring it down they said! I think it would be great if Chesterfield had a Makespace, to encourage us to learn and prolong the life of products we own. It would be a great place to teach the kids skills that are dying out… how to put a shelf up or wire a plug! Anyway, have fun fixing and see you on Saturday at Monkey Park, let’s see if they can sort my van!
Page 34 www.s40local.co.uk
6 years “lost” pension adds up to an income loss of £36,000. We can’t make that up given only 2 years notice! I saved all my working life so that I could have a few treats in retirement – those savings are now being used to plug that income gap. We believe in equality – people should get their pension at the same age. We are campaigning for fair transitional arrangements for women born in the 1950s. Things were different when we started work in the 60s/70s. We paid in for 40+ years under the old rules, we feel we should benefit as expected under those rules. WASPI is a national campaign, very active in Derbyshire. All our local MPs – Toby Perkins, Chesterfield; Dennis Skinner, Bolsover; and Natascha Engel, NE Derbyshire support our cause. We also have Page 48 www.s40local.co.uk
September from 11am until 2pm. There will be lots going on, MPs and local councillors will be there and there will be an information station where you can sign a petition and find out more about WASPI.
We directed people down to Monkey Park where Transition Chesterfield run a Repair Cafe but we said it ran every month. Unfortunately we got mixed up and they only run the Repair Cafe every other month on the second Saturday. Just to confirm the next two meets will be on 8 October and 10 December, 10am-3pm. People are welcome to bring down anything that needs repairing and there will be a bunch of friendly people armed with screwdrivers, spanners and whatever tools they need to try and do their best to fix your items and breathe new life into them. Monkey Park has a cafe, bakery, workspace and cycle workshop so you can enjoy a coffee and get your bike tweaked whilst you wait. Monkey Park, Chester Street. Monkeypark.org.uk

Churches Together Words: Paul King Try this conundrum: What is CTfC, and what are CCA and CEC, which are connected to it? Answer: they stand for the network of churches in and around Chesterfield which are linked together – and have been for some time.
Run that past me again? CCA (now Chesterfield Christian Action) traded under a different name (Churches Association for Social Work) for 100 years until 2012 and is what it says on the tin: it is concerned with housing and homelessness, poverty and justice. We have run night shelters; one current concern is employment practice at Sports Direct; another is the expected arrival of refugees from Syria. We showed interest in the performance of a certain medical practice. CEC has also been renamed – twice, I think – and was already Page 50 www.s40local.co.uk
alive and well in the middle of the 19th century. Christian Education Chesterfield organises the colourful Whit Walk and an Open Air service and keeps an interest in the quality of children’s work in the churches. So that leaves CtFC? Christians Together for Chesterfield has for 8 years tried to foster a network of the ‘total Christian enterprise’ in and around Chesterfield. Two dozen churches, covering pretty much the whole range from Orthodox to Pentecostal, are linked together, and organise Street Pastors, School Pastors, Foodbanks. Once in a while we worship together with a big Songs of Praise event in January. The level of awareness across the ‘total Christian enterprise’ is far, far greater than it has ever been before. So why keep it all a secret? We are learning not to be unhelpfully modest. Blowing our own trumpet is not right, but nor is keeping good things to ourselves. We hope this year to get our member churches to display a sign in common, so that it can be seen that we are all singing from more or less the same hymnsheet. In the autumn we shall enjoy visits from two distinguished church leaders: Revd. Les Isaacs, leader of the Ascension Trust, will visit our Street

and School Pastors in September and Dr David Cornick, the general secretary of Churches Together in England, will be in town to preach on the morning of October 23rd – following a day in Matlock with Churches Together for Derbyshire. So, across the town of Chesterfield there is a growing sense of shared purpose and resources. The age of rivalry and competition has not yet completely come to an end, but we are valuing each other and making common cause. Why the particular title? We are eager to emphasise that we are people, and not just organisations and buildings – Christians. And this includes some people who are not altogether identified with a single church. Importantly, we are FOR Chesterfield, and not just IN it. You may know of Samaritan’s Purse and its shoeboxes, Tools with a Mission (sending repaired and refurbished tools to developing countries), Gideons (who give away bibles to hospitals, hotels and schools), Christian Aid and Tearfund. These and many more are all part of the ‘total Christian enterprise’ in our town. So do visit us on www.ctfchesterfield.org.uk or ‘like’ us on Facebook or twitter @ctfchesterfield. Many groups reckon to be ‘here to help’: we hope we are too.

10 Garden Things
Words: Transition Chesterfield Picture: Robert Nixon Betts 1.
If you have heavy clay soil, make a start on digging it over, leaving the lumps to be broken down by frost over winter. If you have any used compost, which will improve the soil structure, incorporate it as you go.
2.
This is the time to give your soft fruit some shaping whilst they are dormant: blackcurrants, blackberries and all the hybrids. Remember that some of these e.g. blackcurrants, will fruit on the previous year’s growth.
3.
Thoroughly clean greenhouses and cold frames while the days are still warm enough for them to dry out.
4.
Birds (especially pigeons) are fond of leafy green vegetables, so deter them with netting or lengths of black thread tightly stretched across and around the plants.
5.
Keep harvesting runner and French beans; like many vegetables (including courgettes) they will keep trying to produce more as long as they’re not allowed to set seed - it’s the same principle as deadheading ornamental plants. But there comes a time when they really have finished, so cut them off at ground level, leaving the roots, which will have collected valuable nitrogen, in the ground.
6.
Plant over-wintering onion sets and garlic, and continue to sow winter lettuces - start in modules under cover (there are several varieties with varying degrees of hardiness: lamb’s lettuce, Winter Density, Valdor and All the Year Round are just a few).
7.
Order and plant new fruit trees, and move existing ones (and shrubs) while the ground is still warm.
8.
Keep on top of tidying jobs, but leave as many ornamental seedheads as possible; they can look good, especially frosted, and provide food for birds. Attracting these to the garden can also help with pest control, as they will eat the eggs and larvae of some nuisance bugs.
9.
Houseplants will need watering less often, and don't need to be fed any more this year.
10. Cover ponds with nets before heavy leaf-fall clogs them up – remember to remove the collected leaves before they weigh the net down or start to rot. The Inspire Community Garden is holding a ‘Harvest Open Day’ on Sunday 18th September from 11.00am to 3.00pm.
