So we’ve got the Chatsworth Road Festival under our belts, and as we look ahead, bonfires beckon and Christmas is on the horizon. On the subject of Christmas, do you like a Christmas Fair or Market? Well there's no shortage in the area, 14 in total this November to be exact! The Chatsworth Road Festival has been and gone, and thanks to Helen Rowan Photography we’ve some great pictures, capturing the essence of the festival to share with you. We've included a selection, and there's more on Facebook on our S40 Local page. Back to Christmas, I’ve pinched a quote from an article online from Clare Raynor of Retail Champions “Christmas sales can account for between a third and two-thirds of a retailer’s annual turnover. A bad Christmas can mark disaster for a small business.” So for me that gives us all a responsibility to try and source Christmas gifts for friends and families from our local shops where we can. To help our local suppliers I have provided a selection of suggestions in our Gift Guide. Please be interesting and creative and try to spend some of your budget here in Chesterfield.

Festival Reprise
For a few days the bunting was hung out for the Chatsworth Road Festival. Bird boxes were made, Morris dancers danced, dogs showed, there was a cake, a mayor and a mayoress, products were made and sold, meringues eaten, apples peeled, churches got messy and knitted hats were made as people knitted and nattered... plus loads of other stuff, the pictures show just a handful of events that took place.

T
he River Hipper is Chatsworth Road's forgotten sister. Chatsworth Road gets the attention, and the festivals and the bunting, and is known right across our region. The Hipper doesn't get festivals – instead people dump beer cans and shopping trolleys in it. But the road and the river have a relationship which goes back years, and the Chatsworth Road area wouldn't be what it is without the Hipper. Here’s her story. Hipper Sick to Holymoorside: The Hipper has its own connection with Chatsworth, beginning its journey on Chatsworth estate land on Beeley Moor in an area called Hipper Sick. Sick (or syke) is an old northern word meaning a small stream or rivulet, and there are various 'sicks' on the moors east of Chatsworth: Umberley Sick, Harland Sick, and others. The Hipper soon runs down to Holymoorside, through tree-lined channels past Hunger Hill and Cat Hole. The Hipper may get its name from trees on its banks, Hypa being an Old English word for Osier, a type of willow. Holymoorside: It's in Holymoorside that the Hipper first became a working river. In the late 1700s the hot new industry was cotton spinning. Large mills were built employing scores or even hundreds of people, and with machinery powered by water. Some Derbyshire examples survive, like Arkwright's Mill at Cromford, but there were many others including at Holymoorside. The village had two industrial mills, as well as a corn mill. One produced cotton and silk yarn; the other made dye. Both were originally water powered, with the Hipper feeding mill ponds which in turn fed the water wheels. The mills were a success, especially under Page 24 www.s40local.co.uk
the ownership of the Manlove family, and survived into the early 20th century having changed with the times into making bobbins of thread for sewing machines. Their closure was a major blow to the village. Somersall and Walton: The Hipper then flows down past Somersall Hall, a house dating in part from the 1600s, then through the modern and pleasant Somersall Park, and arrives at Walton. There it fills Walton Dam and it's there that the Hipper's relationship with Chesterfield’s history really begins. You can think of Walton Dam (aka Walton Mill Dam) as a control on the flow of the river, supporting a corn mill and the industries
downstream. But it's also been a place of entertainment continuously since the early 19th century. Often rowing boats were available to hire, and swimming was popular in warm weather. And when the water froze over people went skating. Sometimes there were even cricket matches on the ice – played entirely in skates – and curling matches as well as just skating and dancing. Winter entertainments
at the dam in Victorian times sometimes lasted well into the night with the scene lit by bonfires and strings of Chinese lanterns, and with Chesterfield Band playing. (Walton Dam wasn't the only place you could go ice skating back then – apparently Chesterfield Sewage Works also let people skate when their ponds froze over. Not sure how popular that was!). Starting in 1893 the Chesterfield Swimming Club held annual summer carnivals at Walton Dam, with swimming contests, record attempts by national champions, and 'aquatic sports' such as water polo and walking greasy poles supported above the water. For landlubbers there were foot races,
music, band contests, and theatre performances (one was a farce called 'Rescuing Ladies from the Deep'), plus lots of food and drink stalls. One year, for charity, the club brought and launched a genuine RNLI lifeboat; a retired boat, but one that had saved over 30 lives. The entertainment tradition at the dam long continued with Robinson's regularly holding sports days and other events there.
Chatsworth Road and Goytside: Below the dam the river supplied water and motive power, either via water wheels or as water for steam engines, to a range of industries along Chatsworth road. There were cotton mills, potteries, iron works, brick works, saw mills, chemical works, foundries, a colliery, a brewery, slaughter houses, and more. They all needed water and lots of it. Artificial ponds and channels like the goyt of Goytside ('goyt' is a northern word related to gutter) were created, and you can still see a decayed water wheel at Cannon Mill. That mill was where it all began: originally a corn mill, it was transformed in the 18th century to power machinery for John and Ebeneezer Smith's iron works. Other industries followed. All those factories and workmen's houses changed the nature of the Hipper. One survey in the 1870s counted 112 outlets of 'a sewage nature', going into the river between Holymoorside and Boythorpe Bridge, mostly in Brampton, plus coal washings,
tar, and industrial chemicals. But people still used its water for household purposes; people washed clothes in it, bathed in it, and people were even baptised in it. And, sadly, people drowned in it. Children playing or fetching water would fall in, and so would drunks staggering home in the dark. Many folks were rescued – but when the river is full it’s dangerous and has taken a good few lives.
Waste from industry – broken pots, rubble, and other detritus – raised the bed of the river, making it more likely to flood. Floods have always plagued the lower Hipper valley, with major floods in 1830, 1839, 1849, 1867, 1875, 1880, 1881, 1886, 1922, 1932, 1986, and 2007. The most dramatic was possibly the storm of 1830, with furniture floating down Chatsworth Road to Wheatbridge, and water getting into pottery kilns and causing explosions of steam. Floods often caused factory shut-downs and the lay-off of hundreds of workers. Past Chesterfield to the Rother: At Wheatbridge the Hipper meets the Holme Brook – which also used to be dammed to supply the forges – and flows through an area once called Maynard's Meadows, now Queen's Park, where it feeds the ornamental lake. It then used to turn north to meet the town, passing right alongside the Ragged School and the House of Correction. Near South Place it opened out to form Silk Mill Dam, which fed the wheel of a four-
story mill that dated back to 1759. This stretch was famously smelly and unhealthy – but most of the pollution had come downstream from areas out of the control of Chesterfield Corporation: a problem and source of arguments for many years.
the river had tanneries on them, and many centuries later tanning is still a local industry. Just before the Hipper met the Rother there was once a water mill, the Lord's Mill – hence the name of the street – and a bridge with a chapel on the route to Derby. Road works and redevelopments have since moved the river south into a channel behind Ravenside Retail Park, but it still meets up with the Rother at much the same place as always. Nowadays many industries have gone, and the Hipper is in retirement from its working life. It’s also less polluted, though it did recently turn orange for some reason. It’s channelled and culverted through town but when upstream it’s a pleasant feature and an important part of our local parks. Like many a half-ignored relation, it’s been more important to us over the years than you might have thought, and you might find you’d miss it if it somehow disappeared. Except, of course, for the floods!

The New Station Link We catch up with community activist Alastair Meikle and discuss the recent success to establish a safe, traffic free route to the station. Words: Paul Chapman

hrough S40 Local you get to know lots of people who are engrained in the local community in one way or another. One of those people who crops up time and again supporting many community initiatives is Alastair Miekle. Without wanting to fix a label on him, for those who don’t know him I’d probably describe Alastair as one of our environmental and community champions. Over the years I’ve seen him associated with Transition Chesterfield, Friends of Inkerman Park, Friends of Queen’s Park, Chesterfield Cycle Campaign and Monkey Park. Although a Chesterfield lad, Alastair worked in London and Liverpool as an Air Traffic Controller, in the minority, as one of the few people who regularly cycled to the London Air Traffic Control Centre! He worked there until 2003, when he decided to leave his job. He spent a year touring Europe in a motorhome with his family before returning to Chesterfield. Back in Chesterfield he started Wheely Fun Wheels providing bike ‘try outs’ with a range of unusual bikes. Wheely Fun Wheels now mainly provides cycle training with a team of local experienced National Standard Cycling instructors who promote the use of bicycles as everyday transport and provide Bikeability (the modern day cycling proficiency) training in local schools and to adults. Adult training is provided via Derbyshire County Council’s ‘County Rider’ scheme - every adult living, working or studying can apply for 8 hours free cycle training! He is one of the coaches at The Brampton Bicycle Club, who meet at 6.30pm on Thursday evenings at Old Hall School, to help children gain confidence on their bikes, hopefully to plant the seed so cycling becomes an everyday part of their life. And he helped start Monkey Park, volunteering in the cycle workshop every Saturday for the past year. They offer cost effective cycle repairs and refurbish donated bikes which they resell to people who might not otherwise be able to afford one to use as a form of transport for getting around. Working with the Cycle Campaign, Alastair also campaigns to make sure facilities for cyclists are a priority in new developments around town, and lobbies the council for good, safe, traffic free cycle routes. A recent success for the Campaign is the new traffic free cycle link from Queen’s Park to Chesterfield Railway Station. The new route links The Queens’ Park to the station, via a track behind Ravenside Retail Park (Debenhams, Next, etc) with new bridges installed to get cyclists safely across Markham Road, the A61 and Hollis Lane. From here the routes continue to the station and connects other routes to give safe cycling access to Chesterfield College and route continues out towards the North of the county. On 16 September I joined Alastair and a group of school children from Old Hall School who were cycling down to attend the official opening event, where we met other groups from Brockwell, Cavendish and Hasland schools plus users of the Wheels for All inclusive cycling hub. People I caught up with Alastair to see how much effort it took to get new bridges installed (and old ones refurbished) so we can cycle safely to the station and also to hear about his views for the future of cycling in Chesterfield. The route along the old Brampton branch line, a gleam in the eye of the Cycle Campaign for many years but in 2010 a cycle audit of Chesterfield conducted by Derbyshire County Council identified it for potential development into a walking and cycling route. It was recognised that it would be expensive and put on the ‘back burner’. Meanwhile more work was put into developing a traffic free cycle route from Whittington Moor to the town centre and south to Storforth Lane. In 2013 local Sustrans volunteer Paul Balderson took Sustrans officers on a tour of the town and showed them the line of the station route. By chance they knew of a funding bid for better connections to railway stations and agreed this project was worthy of inclusion. A partnership between Sustrans and Derbyshire County Council won the funding bid so planning work started. It was difficult to find a solution to running alongside the railway across Hollis Lane but it was eventually solved with a new bridge.

Opening the link has joined together cycle routes from the north, west and south. Looking to the future the Campaign is pressing for the extension of the Hipper Valley Trail to Holymoorside and routes through the Avenue development linking Chesterfield to the 5 Pits Trail. We are also looking forward to a new cycle route around the perimeter of Peak Resort when construction starts and in the longer term the development of an off road route up to the hospital. The cycle network is growing in Chesterfield to provide an alternative to using cars for local transport. Look out for copies of maps showing the new station link and another showing the cycle routes in and around town. Take The Bull's Head By The Horns We talk to Mark Aisthorpe, who’s bringing The Bull's Head back to the centre of village life at Holymoorside. Words: Paul Chapman
“
Locals joke that it’s about time I left now” laughs Mark, they’re referring to the recent run of short-term landlords at the pub recently, but Mark's not planning on going anywhere.
“This isn’t a short-term thing for me” says Mark, “I’ve personally invested in this place and want to see it as the thriving local it should be.” It’s a quiet Tuesday afternoon but it's busy as we chat, people dining and a few small groups enjoying a drink and chat, something that’s not been happening at The Bull for a while. Mark is a Chef and started at the Bull’s Head on 27 May 2016. Like many chefs he’s worked his way around the country with spells at high end locations such as Clivedon House, Berkshire, Michelin starred locations in London and has worked in the kitchen alongside TV personalities. However, it’s not been easy, with 16 hour days from the age of 16 and working almost full time whilst studying, Mark achieved level one and two before leaving school and worked at the University of Sheffield whilst still at school! All the long hours and hard work lead Mark to leave London and head back home to Rotherham. “I was simply burnt out, but more than that, fed up of grafting like a fool for someone else to sit at the end of the bar and drink the profits! I needed to work for myself. “The change when I moved back was huge, I had a weekend off, can’t remember when I last did that. I started doing some agency work to pay the bills but all the time was scouting pubs to run myself.” Mark was looking for a premises that felt right, something he could put his stamp on.

“I’d seen a couple of premises owned by the same pub chain but none worked out”, but when they contacted him about The Bull’s Head, Mark went straight over to take a look. Unfortunately, they gave him the wrong address! It quickly became apparent he was in the wrong place so set off and this time found The Bull’s Head at Holymoorside. When he arrived it was shut up, but he took a look through the windows and liked what he saw. “It was important the premises had potential, I saw a few places that would have been OK, I reckoned we could reach a point where bookings would have been high every week but what’s the fun in doing that with a small place, it would quickly become mundane and I don’t want that” explains Mark. “I viewed the pub internally the next day and bought my Dad along, he’s the guy doing the background work now, I love food but hate paperwork and luckily for me Dad is taking care of this for me. “We went away, did some figures and by the end of the week things were stacking up by Friday I had the keys!” It’s quite clear Mark’s excited about what The Bull has to offer. “I had two weeks to get the pub up and running and open for the Bank Holiday weekend in May” says Mark. “We opened up with new staff and put on a family fun day, it was amazing. The sun shone and it was four or five people deep at the bar, we ran out of ale and were shattered at the end of the weekend.” “But it was a good start. I enlisted the services of a local lad, Joe Farmery, who wanted a few hours’ work, and is now full time and a brilliant asset to the pub. For the first few weeks we
concentrated on the beers and getting the pub back on its feet. We slowly introduced a menu consisting of reasonably priced, traditional pub food, light bites, snacks and a specials board which is now changing with the seasons and last weekend we did 400 covers.” This is now 16 weeks ago (as I write) and Mark is building a detailed plan for the premises to ensure it becomes part of the village life again. The targets in business plan are being achieved and he’s looking to invest in outside changes for the summer of 2017. You’ll have to keep an eye on developments but if plans are turned into reality the changes will see The Bull's Head become a venue with private facilities and space for events that it simply can’t host today. In the immediate future Mark will be launching the Winter Menu, they are almost booked for Christmas and there will be a Christmas Craft and Food Fayre on 26th and 27th November. If you’ve not dropped in for a pint since Mark took over, The Bull’s Head is now well and truly open and you’ll be assured of a warm welcome. Getting the best for your child at school without feeling like a ‘nuisance’ parent!

ne of the many challenges of parenting is ensuring that your child gets the best possible chance in education. It isn’t about being ‘top of the class’ just them being ‘top of their potential’. Schools set exams to ‘grade’ children’s ability so that they work at the right level of Maths or English and can progress without undue stress. But what happens when you feel that your child is in a set below their ability? How do you show the school this and get them moved up a Maths set for example? Beginning secondary school is exciting and confusing for many students and most schools don’t allocate year 7 children to sets until after exams towards the end of half term. Jo often hears from parents and children who feel disappointed with the set they are in for Maths or English. The situation is often picked up at the first parent teacher meetings. The parent is told that the child is doing well, and they are, but the parent is hearing from their child that the work is too easy; that friends they had sat on a table with for maths at primary school are in the set above them. The child is frustrated and, while working well, is definitely not pushing themselves. Parents sometimes raise the issue with the teacher but getting them moved up is not always easy. No one wants to move children around too much. The problem is compounded by the work and topics taught in each set being different according to the level. We all know that a grade C in Maths and English is the key to a future of choices in career and jobs so is it any wonder that parents and children want to get the best possible chance at GCSE by being in a higher set?
So what do you do? Get Jo and Kip to help you! Tara was in the second from bottom maths set but had been coming to Kip for some months and was making good progress. She was feeling frustrated because she found her school maths too easy. Her school teacher agreed to consider moving her to a higher set after the end of term exam. Tara again achieved a low maths grade overall because she hadn’t been taught all the topics on the exam but got 98% with material she had studied! Jo and the teacher talked and the teacher kindly sent Jo a list of new topics needed to get Tara to the level of the next set up. Three months later, after working down the list at Kip, Tara had made great strides and by the next exam was able to successfully demonstrate her ability to work at the next level. Since her first move ‘up’, Tara has been moved up again and is on track to achieve a strong grade at GCSE! She is happy, her parents and teachers are happy and Jo is happy to have been able to support the good work being done by mainstream colleagues. A win all round!! Ryan Aspley makes the move to forward his ice hockey career. Words: Ben Turner
B
ack in May 2015 we featured an article about a young man from Brookfield Community School who was excelling in the sport of ice hockey. Now aged 15 that same youngster, Ryan Apsley, is moving to a new and very exciting stage in his development as a hockey player. His Dad, Gary, describes how Ryan first discovered his affinity for ice hockey. “Ryan and his brother Jake went ice skating with me and their Mum and when I set-up an Ice Hockey Club they both began to play. As their skills developed they both started to take it more seriously.” Gary tells us that “Ryan started skating aged 4 before playing in his first league game just 2 years later, losing 49-0.”

Then at the Conference Tournament, held in Sheffield last April, Ryan was approached by the two Academies and was provisionally offered a place at the prestigious Canadian International Hockey Academy in Ontario, Canada. The decision to attend the Canadian International Hockey Academy was a “nobrainer” according to Gary who said, “Ryan and I made a whistle stop visit to Ottawa in July where Ryan undertook a sport and educational evaluation. He was shown around the Academy campus and introduced to the staff, who were all very interested in seeing Ryan join their programme. Their welcome was fabulous and Ryan had no hesitation in deciding that he wanted to move to Canada to begin to build a better future for himself with his education and his hockey.”
In the Apsley household, ice hockey really is a family affair. Gary added. “Ryan is currently going through the Great Britain U16 selection process and his brother Jake is Captain of the Sutton Sting U18 team as well as being an English Ice Hockey Association match referee.”
Last summer, Ryan attended a three week training camp in America, which had become a regular occurrence for Ryan. For the past four years Ryan has spent his summer preparing for the hockey season that starts in September. When his friends are usually enjoying their summer holidays in their own way, Ryan has been indulging his passion for ice hockey at an ice rink or on a training camp.
But this summer has been huge for Ryan who is not just moving to a new school, but also moving to a new country, having been selected to attend the Canadian International Hockey Academy. We reported back in 2015 that Ryan was playing in the 2014 Midlands Conference team, and was also playing at U14 level for England. It was during this time that Ryan was noticed by a couple of North American scouts who were looking for international players for the Academies

Speaking about Ryan’s recent training camp, Gary said “Ryan and a team mate made the trip to Cincinnati, Ohio, home of Maximum Stride Hockey, which is run by former Sheffield Steelers player, Danny Wood.
People Danny to work on all aspects of his game as a two-way forward has helped Ryan’s game to develop beyond recognition. Gary also translates some of the lingo. “Two-way means that Ryan is effective at both ends of the rink, playing offensively trying to score goals and defensively protecting his own goal.”
Ryan’s ice hockey was recognized locally too with him being awarded Chesterfield Young Sports Person of the Year. Having worked closely with Ryan, Danny Wood knows this move could be the making of the Chesterfield youngster and said, “Ryan is a smart player and he is quick too. A move to Canada will be a big challenge for him. He will be coming up against much bigger guys and he will need to ramp-up his intensity level so that he can demand respect from his play which will help create the time and space that he will then be able to exploit. I am sure it will be a great move for him and I look forward to seeing how he develops at the Academy."

On whether Ryan wishes to remain in Canada in the long term, Gary said. “Ryan moved to Rockland in Ontario on 29 August. He has a two year programme to complete, after which he is hoping to continue to college and then to university. His Mum and I believe there are considerably more opportunities available to Ryan in Canada and North America than here in the UK.” Even though he’s only 15, Ryan is already used to travelling long distances to play his sport as he has travelled across Europe with his former club team, Sutton Sting, as well as with England. Ryan’s ice hockey was recognized locally too with him being awarded Chesterfield Young Sports Person of the Year. He was also awarded Most Valuable Player (MVP) at the 2016 Tilburg International Tournament in Holland, following in the footsteps of his brother, who won the same award in 2013. Not just a player, Ryan is also a qualified Level 1 ice hockey coach too which has helped him to earn the respect of many coaches for his work rate, dedication and importantly, being coachable. Danny Wood has the last word and said. “He consistently tries to do his job to the best of his ability. What more can any coach ask for?”

Proud As A Peacock Once Again The Peacock At Barlow
A
centuries-old landmark village pub springs back into life next week (Tuesday 4th October) after a £2million makeover.
The Old Pump in Barlow, which had stood forlorn since closing in December 2014, has been transformed into a sophisticated country pub with a host of local real ales and Derbyshire produce on the menu. Its new lease of life actually harks back to a previous life - the Hackney Lane pub is to be renamed The Peacock At Barlow, the title it was given by landowners the Duke of Rutland when it began life as a busy 18th century coaching inn. “The Dukes of Rutland were major landowners in this region and gave The Peacock name to all the inns on their patch,” said landlord Roger Salt. “I believe the Rutland coat of arms featured a peacock crest, but why all the pubs were given the same name I don’t know. Maybe the intention was to create one of the earliest forms of pub chains. I’d love to find out more. If there’s a local history buff who knows the answer, there’s a pint in it.” Roger and wife Rebecca ran pubs in Chesterfield before taking over the Kelstedge Inn on the outskirts of Ashover. Said Rebecca: “We are thrilled to be at the helm of The Peacock at Barlow. It has to be one of the most stylish pubs around. No

expense has been spared, yet great care has been taken to ensure the country character and history has been retained and our finest feature - the magnificent view - is allowed to shine. “The atmosphere is sophisticated, yet relaxed, a place where people can come for a night out or straight from a long country walk for good ale and a scrumptious meal made from the wealth of quality produce on our doorstep. Local residents have actually helped to create the menu; we asked for their favourite pub dishes and ideas have been flooding in.” A glass atrium, conservatory and four luxury en-suite guest bedrooms have been created for the October opening. Four more bedrooms will be added shortly in the next phase of development and in the New Year the pub will boast its own on-site brewery, The Derbyshire Brewing Company. The pub has been redeveloped by local businessmen Derek Mapp and David Bond, who have a strong background in innkeeping and hospitality from their Mansfield Brewery and Tom Cobleigh days. i, we’re Louise & Laura and we have our own food blogging site called ‘Gastronamis’, derived from the words ‘friends’ and ‘food’. There is a story behind the setting up of Gastronamis which is sad, but at the same time inspiring and we would love you to visit our blog page to find out more. It was nearly a year ago that our blog page went live and it’s just been an amazing year for us. We’ve had our very own article in the Derbyshire Times, supported a local event put on by the National Hereditary Breast Cancer Charity by baking and donating one hundred cake pops, gained lots of new followers and more importantly we’ve inspired people to cook! What we do is a hobby and we both thoroughly enjoy it. We love sharing our recipes, which is anything from a quick and easy mid-week meal to a dinner party with friends. It was an absolute pleasure to find out we could write an article for the S40 Local and share one of our recipes with you. We love cooking all year round but there’s something nice and special about cooking in the Autumn and Winter months. Perhaps it’s the thought of going for a family walk on a Sunday morning, the crisp cold air, seeing the autumn leaves fall and coming home to a roaring log fire and a slow cooked casserole and apple crumble just waiting to be eaten! It’s always easy to buy meat from your local supermarket when you’re there most weeks doing the weekly shop, but we find it really pays off to visit your local butcher for any kind of meat. It’s better quality, tastier and you usually get more for your money. There are so many local butchers in the area who are all good and definitely worth visiting, two of our favourites are Highfield House Farm and Reads on Chatsworth Road. We’ve shared one of our recipes with you which is easy and quick to prepare, tastes delicious and is sure to warm you up on a cold autumn day. Enjoy.

Olive Oil Butter 8 thick Pork Sausages Pack of whole chestnuts (Merchant Gourmet Chestnuts are good) 1 onion 1 tsp crushed garlic

500g carton of passata 140g diced pancetta 100ml Marsala or red wine 1tsp dried rosemary 500g Rigatoni pasta Shaved parmesan
Method • • • • • • •
Fry the oil and butter in a frying pan. Add the onion, garlic and pancetta and fry until browned. Squeeze the meat out of the sausage skins and add to the pan and stir. Add in the chestnuts and rosemary. Add in the marsala and passata and stir well. Bring to the boil then reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes. In a saucepan add the pasta and bring to the boil (cook according to the packet instructions). Once the pasta is cooked add to the sausage mix and stir well. Serve with parmesan shavings and garlic ciabatta
The sausages were bought from one of my favourite local farm shops, Highfield House Farm. The quality of the meat really does make a difference to the flavour of any dish.

T
ara Shad contacted me through an open day at West Studios, discussing her business, Crowd Capture, and her recent time with The Prince's Trust. Having Asperger Syndrome she has, at times, struggled with the social side of business but is working well towards her goals and spending time supporting students. "Hi! I am a fashion designer based in Chesterfield. I studied Art and Design and did a BTEC Diploma in Fashion Design at Chesterfield College. Last year I completed a Level 3 Teacher Training course enabling me to run sewing workshops and teach dressmaking to young people with special needs alongside my business. "My business started out selling handmade jewellery imported from India to boutiques whilst at college. After completing college, I started selling the jewellery together with upcycled clothes I had made at local craft fairs. There was a recession at the time and as a consequence there was lots of interest in upcycling and make and mend. This helped me develop the business and I set up a website so that my customers could view my products and buy them online. The name ‘Crowd Capture’ seemed fitting, the jewellery I was selling being bold and stylish. I like to think that when ladies wear my items they look great and stand out with the individually handcrafted pieces. "I contacted The Prince’s Trust to get some business mentoring with a view to building up the online business. I had received recommendations from other people saying the Trust was really good at helping young people making a start in life, and that they had truly benefited from their programmes.
"The Trust encouraged me to set career goals for me personally and for the business. As I started progressing, handling the knocks I have had due to having Asperger's and having to deal with difficult social situations, I decided that I wanted to give my time, experience and skills back to the Trust. In August 2015 I became a Young Ambassador for them. This role allowed me to meet some amazing, talented young people. I have been creating awareness of the Trust amongst companies such a World Pay, Joules, SCC and Capita. It has been such an incredible year and I was even invited to Buckingham Palace for The Prince’s Trust 40th Anniversary where I saw His Royal Highness Prince Charles. I also met John Culshaw, Ronnie Wood, Joan Collins and Fearne Cotton amongst others, a great day out. "What I enjoy the most about my business is when I see the people’s faces light up when they see the clothes I have made for them. I feel great seeing their photos and how they take pleasure styling the dresses with their accessories. My design influence comes from my travels to India and Europe. I like to put my own stamp on fashion trends, picturing the design, creating a simple, feminine quality, a touch of colour and boldness in the print. I design dresses, tops and shirts for business, holidays and weddings and I’m also now taking orders for bespoke Asian clothing. "I am very happy with how my business is progressing and with my achievements so far. My future aim is to spend more time with young people, passing on my knowledge and helping them out, and of course building my business in parallel."

Queen's Park Cllr Amanda Serjeant discusses options for the old site.
C
ouncillors recently granted planning permission to demolish the old building on Boythorpe Road, which closed when the new £11.25 million Queen’s Park Sports Centre opened in January.
A range of possible future uses for the site has been considered and tested against four criteria. From these, the council’s preferred option is to have 3G allweather multi-sport pitches on the site with a surface that can be used for football, hockey, rugby and athletics training and recreational use. Over the past few months the council has been asking residents, businesses and Chesterfield college students (who share the new facility) for their views on the preferred options and alternative suggestions. Cllr Amanda Serjeant, cabinet member for town centre and visitor economy, said: “Whatever goes on the site also needs to generate an income rather than cost tax payers money and must be in keeping with the Grade two listed heritage of Queen's Park.” "The borough currently has fewer 3G all-weather sports pitches than recommended for our population and the use would keep the sites sports heritage." Councillor Serjeant added: “While this is our preferred option at this stage no decisions have been made." By the time you read this the consultation period will have come to an end, options will be tested against four principles that the site use should: • Generate income and not cost council taxpayers any extra money. • Support Council Plan objectives to improve the quality of life for local people, support a thriving borough, and deliver value for money. • Complement Queen’s Park, with its grade two star heritage listing, and other facilities in the area.

• Be well-used throughout the year and provide added value for the community. Options already considered that have been ruled out for the following reasons include. • Indoor leisure provision e.g. ice rink/roller skating/ soft play – operators usually want ‘shed’ buildings and they would not be appropriate from a planning perspective. The council also doesn’t believe these uses would be financially viable without subsidisies. • Cultural use e.g. for exhibitions, artist studios, events – this use could complement the park but usually requires significant subsidies to operate. • Outdoor leisure provision eg high ropes, climbing, water features – while this type of use would add to the facilities offered at Queen’s Park, it is not felt financially viable without subsidising running costs. • To add an extension to the existing park – this would add to the cost of maintaining and improving the park and put pressure on already tight budgets. • Shopping – given planning policies this is not felt a suitable location. • Housing – there is a need to increase town centre housing but it's not felt appropriate at this site. • Car parking – with car parks either side and capacity in other car parks, there is not felt to be demand. • Restaurant/pub use – the council does not feel this use would complement the park and there are other locations that would be more appropriate. • Selling the land – this would result in less control to ensure the use is appropriate to the park's heritage. A decision on a future use is expected to be made by early 2017 so once out in the public domain we'll let you know the final decision.

They offer an alternative with much opportunity to learn new things and experience a more active fulfilling life which keeps them healthier, safe and well. To keep the group going they need Core Funding, it's their lifeline to our community and gives them a life to live for. This money will be used to pay rent, support workers, maintain equipment, subsidise transport and activities. They also need funds for activities like days out, luncheon clubs/healthy eating, swimming, drama, dance and music and specialist activities such as Tai Chi. These things help the health and wellbeing of members but are not normally accessible or affordable. "People like us with Learning disabilities have been directly affected by the unprecedented financial cut backs to social care services and are finding ourselves outside specialist social care provision" says Maria Piroso, chairperson. "Without Our Vision Our Future we will be stuck at home lonely and isolated with nowhere to go and nothing to do. We would very much appreciate your help as without it we will close within 3 months."

Fund Raising for Breast Cancer Awareness

ecently you may have noticed bra-bunting adorning the front at Maison Mes Amis and no, Marcella Kirk hasn't left her washing out! Step inside and you’ll find many old bras planted with garden finery to hold the first...wait for it…you’ll like it…a Winter BRA-DEN Party! By combining a love for gardening and an old bra, people, well mainly ladies (I suspect), have been displaying their entries in Maison’s most recent competition and fund raising event during Breast Cancer Awareness week. Funds are helping support the Hereditary Breast Cancer Helpline. Entries were asked to donate £5 to be in with a chance of winning £100 to spend at Brooke Garden Centre together with a special prize for under 14s. In addition to the entries, Krystal Rouge, Burlesque princess donated a signed bra to raffle off and help raise funds. Local DJ, Becky Measures, local celebrity, James Hill and Maison's customers all selected a winner. Becky is pictured with the prickly Menopause Bra-den which she chose as her personal favourite, plus a few others from the entries below. "I'm blown away by the number of entries and effort people have gone to. Hopefully it will be the start of many more Bra-den Parties" Becky commented.

1. If you have been organised enough to order bare-rooted trees or shrubs (local nurseries may have some, although the varieties will be limited), they should be delivered sometime this month. Plant them out as soon as possible – it is essential the roots don't dry out, so if you have to keep them for a few days, wrap them in some old sacking or something similar, and (very important) keep them out of the wind. 2. Prune established apple and pear trees; this can be done any time between leaf fall and buds bursting but early winter days are more likely to be mild and pleasant. Aim for an open, wine-glass shape, to allow air to circulate and fruit to form where it will receive maximum light. 3. Many perennials should now be cut down to ground level, although you can leave those with attractive seeds-heads if they’ve not been made tatty by the wind – grasses can be particularly effective for a few more weeks, especially if they get frosted, and seed-heads can attract birds. 4. Lawns may still need occasional mowing; keep them clear of fallen leaves, and rake out wormcasts. You can also lightly trim hedges to keep them tidy, but don't overdo it otherwise you'll be looking at bare patches all winter. 5. Sow over-wintering vegetables – cabbages, broad beans and peas are just some that will grow much faster in spring if they’ve had the chance to develop roots beforehand. 6. Outside containers should be insulated before it gets consistently cold, by wrapping in bubble-wrap. Do this when it’s mild and not frosty, otherwise you’ll just seal in the frost. 7. Continue to check any bare soil for germinating weeds and deal with them; it's normally easier to get out all of a dandelion root if the soil is wet. Digging over vegetable patches can be quite pleasant if the weather is good, with the possible added bonus of a robin watching to see if you turn up any worms. But try to avoid walking on wet soil, as this will compact it, then you'll need to dig it again. 8. If the birds have left you any holly berries which you want for Christmas decorations, protect them with fleece or a loosely fixed bag. 9. If you have bird-feeders, keep them topped up (and provide fresh water as well); encouraging foraging birds, especially tits, will help deal with over-wintering pests and their eggs, as well as being great fun to watch. 10. Mostly the colder months are about planning for next year, looking at catalogues and ordering seeds. No-one can predict what the weather will be like next week, let along next year, so you'll have to assume it will be a normal summer – if only we knew what that was any more!
