Derbyshire's Black Gold How Derbyshire's oil fields were stumbled upon in 1847. Words: Trevor The Ink Pictures: Shutterstosk

he fossil fuel people associate with Derbyshire is coal. Rightly so, because coal mining was big business hereabouts and goes back a long way. But did you know that there were oil wells in Derbyshire too? In fact Britain’s first oilfield was in Derbyshire.

Oil is sometimes found seeping into coal mines. This happened in 1847 at Ridding Colliery just south of Alfreton, where the influx became a major nuisance. The colliery had sunk a deeper shaft than normal (250 yards) and they had problems with incoming briny water, dripping down from the sandstone above the coal seam, which they pumped out and simply dumped into the Cromford canal. The flow of water declined but instead they found it contained increasing amounts of ‘a curious substance resembling treacle’, which floated on top of the water. This substance was also dumped into the canal. Eventually it floated downstream to Pinxton Wharf where it gathered as a slick. Boys at Pinxton soon discovered to their great delight that they could throw in burning coals or sticks of wood and actually set fire to the canal. Naturally this drew attention, and Mr Oakes the mine owner contacted his brother-in-law Lyon Playfair of the Geological Society to see if the substance was useful. Lyon Playfair was one of those energetic Victorians who was to have success in half a dozen careers – as well as a chemistry professor and geologist, he was later a special commissioner for the Great Exhibition of 1851, promoted cyphers for encrypting messages, became an MP and deputy speaker, and was Postmaster General. Having investigated the ‘curious substance’, Playfair contacted his friend James Young, a Scottish industrial chemist working in Manchester, to see if practical use could be made of the oil. Young did some experiments and he found he was able to produce lubricating oil, ‘burning oil’ for use in lamps, as well as wax. His Manchester employers were not interested and so he set up a company to do this himself. By 1851 the supply of oil at Riddings was running out, but Young had learnt enough to be able to switch to other sources, and to make paraffin, waxes, and lubricants directly from bituminous coal. Young’s refinery works in Bathgate, Scotland, were the biggest of the time, and he also sold safety lamps for use with his company’s paraffin, made for him in Birmingham. His company “Young’s Paraffin Light and Mineral Oil Company” was successful and he made enough money to support the expeditions of his friend the explorer

and missionary Dr David Livingstone. And when Livingstone was lost in East Africa, Young was able to support Henry Morgan Stanley’s expedition to find and rescue him – the famous ‘Dr Livingstone I presume’ trip. The next real attempts at commercial oil production in Derbyshire did not come till the First World War. By then oil was wanted not just for lubrication and lighting but for fuel; for lorries and aircraft of course, but more importantly for warships. Winston Churchill, while First Lord of the Admiralty, had championed the switch from powering warships with coal to using oil instead: oil was more efficient, more consistent, and it was much easier to handle especially when refuelling ships or rebalancing them as fuel was used up. But of course Britain had no oil and had to import it: a problem in wartime when fighting an enemy with submarines. By 1917 oil supplies were critical, but people remembered that there had been some oil finds in the UK and so the government went looking for more. It chose eleven sites to explore – two in Scotland, two in Staffordshire, and a chain of seven sites, stretching twenty miles, in Derbyshire. Derbyshire was thought to have rock formations resembling the oil-rich regions of Persia, and so got particular attention.

Most of the wells were disappointments. Though there was gas at the Renishaw well, there was only brine at Ridgeway, and the ones at Ironville (near the old Riddings Colliery) and Heath were blanks. But oil was struck at Brimington Common close to Chesterfield in 1919, and also at Hardstoft, near Tibshelf. Brimington’s well quickly ran dry, but the star of the show was Hardstoft which was soon producing 50 barrels of highgrade oil per day from 3,070 feet down; a small but usable quantity. Difficulties about ownership held up commercial use. The well was on the Duke of Devonshire’s land and so he had the mineral rights. But the oil had been found and produced by government under the Defence of the Realm Act (DORA); but DORA had lapsed after the end of the war. This was a legal muddle which was not sorted out till 1923 when the estate took over the Please mention S40 Local · Page 5

History licence and continued production, shipping the oil to Scotland by train for refining. The production of the Hardstoft well gradually declined, and from 1927 all the output was used internally by the estate to power a saw mill at Hardwick. It’s thought that about 29,000 barrels were produced overall from 1919. As the Second World War approached there were more attempts to find oil in mainland Britain. There was drilling at Edale in 1938 and Hardstoft was re-opened. Little oil was found in Derbyshire but in neighbouring Nottinghamshire a very useful quantity was found at Eakring and Duke’s Wood near Newark. These finds were a different order of magnitude to Hardstoft, producing over 4 million barrels by the end of the war. Fun fact: apparently much of the oil that was pumped into Normandy via PLUTO (Pipe-Line Under The Ocean) to support Operation Overlord (the D-Day invasion and after) came from the East Midlands.

Province’ as Hardstoft, Brimington and Riddings, but it seems clear that the real fuel reserves are in the counties east of Derbyshire. That said, interest in the potential of the North Derbyshire part of the province has grown as fracking technology has developed, but seems to be mostly in the potential for gas rather than oil. Exploration is due to start near Dronfield this year. Little evidence is left of the oil industry in Derbyshire; just some concrete platforms at Hardstoft and a garden centre called ‘Oilwell Nursery’; but despite that Derbyshire has a real and surprising place in the history of what is still one of the world’s biggest and most important industries.

Other Midlands oil wells have been in production since the war, notably at Welton near Gainsborough in Lincolnshire. Geologically Walton and Eakring are part of the same ‘East Midland Oil

Wendy Kirkland .... Piano Divas - and all that Jazz! Words by Ann Grinbergs

azz in Chesterfield and beyond owes a great deal to the brilliant talent, energy and enthusiasm of Wendy Kirkland. She is a very skilled jazz keyboard exponent, composer and vocalist and has been part of the UK wide Jazz music scene for more than 10 years. Switching to jazz in her late teens, Wendy started piano lessons at aged 8, going on to win a Derbyshire Music scholarship and gained her ABRSM grades. Wendy continued a playing career as accompanist to singers and as a keyboardist in club bands. After being persuaded to sing by a friend, she quickly learned to reach people perhaps turned off by instrumental jazz, and to communicate with audiences through the songs. She now sings and accompanies herself on piano and Hammond organ, her voice being likened to Blossom Dearie with hints of Diana Krall. Wendy is married to jazz guitarist and bass player Pat Sprakes. They met by chance on a gig and have been making music together ever since.

Wendy enjoys working as a session player to other singers and instrumentalists. Her pianistic style has natural phrasing and a light touch, and her high level of skill in sight-reading written scores and innate ability to pick up melody and harmony by ear, has won much praise for her supportive accompaniment to visiting top artists at

Chesterfield Jazz Club, which she launched with her husband in 2012. At the time, there was little for lovers of jazz locally, and they decided to do something about that with the aim of inviting some of the UK's best jazz musicians to Chesterfield. The meetings are at Club Chesterfield, Chester Street on the third Thursday in the month with doors at 8pm and music at 8.30pm, attracting regular audiences of 50 or more. Wendy has recently released a CD – currently featuring as my driving music of choice, and recent album of the week on www.thejazzuk.co.uk. Entitled “Piano Divas”, it is a celebration of the music of female singer-pianists from the 1950s to the present time – including Nina Simone, Peggy Lee, Carole Welsman, Eliane Elias, and Shirley Horn. The recording was made possible by a Crowdfunding appeal and includes a carefully selected variety of songs researched from the recorded repertoires of some of Wendy's favourite performers. Described as “mellow and stylish” by Clive Davis of the Sunday Times, the album is full of well-crafted arrangements by Wendy Kirkland and Pat Sprakes of accessible classics such as “Come Dance with Me” and “Hey Good Looking”, as well as original compositions with a Latin swing – Bahia and Samba Chica. The recording features a top-class band with Pat Sprakes on guitar, Paul Jefferies on double bass

and Stevie Smith on drums, who between them have played with several UK and international jazz luminaries. Commenting on Wendy’s own accomplished performance, multi-awarding-winning saxophonist, Alan Barnes says “Wendy plays and sings with great passion and this first recording could just mark the beginning of much deserved recognition.”

NGS Macmillam Unit Cutting edge cancer treament in Chesterfield Words: Paul Chapman Pictures: Trevor Smith

he NGS Macmillan Unit at Chesterfield Royal Hospital is the culmination of a five-year project to bring cutting edge cancer treatment to Chesterfield.

The £9.6M project completes in early June and opens its doors for outpatient treatments in a purpose-built facility that the staff are clearly extremely excited about in, not only due to working in the great new space and facilities but also about the new level of care they’ll be able to offer patients. Dr Roger Start is the Lead Cancer Clinician at the trust and has been leading a series of early bird tours of the facility and, thanks to Macmillan Nurses, I’ve been invited along to see for myself what’s on offer. The new building is striking from the moment you approach it, clad in corrian (usually used in kitchen work surfaces) the building is bright bold and very different from the grey boxes usually found on hospital sites. Dr Start explained, “previously a green field site, the building has been designed with patients at the heart of all decisions, the flow through the building during treatment allows us to take the level of care from ordinary to extraordinary, and additional grant funding from Macmillan allows us to deliver a fantastic experience.”

As we toured, the building was in the final stages of cleaning before furniture and IT equipment could be brought in, following this the first patients will be arriving. It is purely outpatient treatment, no one stays overnight, there are two beds but these are for patients who need to lie down for their treatment.

Previously many local patients were travelling to Weston Park in Sheffield for chemotherapy but now with 8 treatment seats as opposed to 7, Chesterfield has tripled its capacity as there are additionally two treatment beds and three treatment rooms. It is also hoped that they can add radiotherapy treatment in the future - there is space but there are additional hurdles to jump due to the tight control of radiotherapy services. Presently radiotherapy patients travel to Weston Park on 22 consecutive days for treatment, the difference having this facility locally would be massive for the level of patient care. The project has been supported by many local organisations and groups who have helped raise funds Page 20 www.s40local.co.uk

for the scheme. Of the £2.7M that has been given, the largest single donation has come from the efforts of the National Garden Scheme, the unit taking NGS in its name to express thanks. NGS runs open garden days across the country, people open up their gardens, serve tea and cake and raise funds. Next time you see a yellow NGS board advertising a garden as open, why not call in, it’s a great way to donate to the scheme, who knows who might benefit? Macmillan Cancer Support have also awarded a grant to the project, raised through their charity shops and fund raising activities.

Macmillan have an information and support centre near reception at the unit and will provide information about treatments and aftercare. They intend to sign-post the social care that is available during and following treatment. For many people this may be the first time they've needed access to these services and they are often unaware of the support that's out there. As we toured what struck me was the feedback and comments from the staff who are clearly excited about the new unit. They have 15 consultation rooms available all flooded with natural light, a mini pharmacy unit on site, discrete quiet rooms for delicate 1-2-1 conversations, rooms fitted with hoists and equipment to help treat people with mobility issues and the new treatment area, enjoying a view out to open countryside through a window that runs floor to ceiling along the entire width of the room. The staff haven’t been forgotten in the new unit, a dedicated staff room away from the treatment area, places where staff can offer peer to peer support, a locker room and shower facilities to encourage staff to run or cycle into work. I was extremely impressed with what I saw, it's encouraging to see this level of local investment, to have the new facility on site at The Royal will enable a level of care not previously possible in the old Cavendish suite and it’s reassuring to feel that those requiring treatments will be getting the best possible level of care in the future.

est Studios is the creative space on Sheffield Road, the old boys grammar school and the place S40 Local calls home. I share my studio space with six other small businesses, and there are five other studios each with a similar number of occupants. One of the newer occupants is April Spence, and Blue Oxen is her sustainable and ethical women’s wear label run from her studio. April recently turned 20 and came to Chesterfield College after getting off to a shakey start studying fashion retail in Nottingham’s Lace Market. “The course studied layout of stores and how people moved around whilst shopping, it was interesting, we looked at merchandising but seemed to be spending most of our time being sent out shopping. I’m sure this would be great for many but for me it wasn’t that interesting.” April explained "I became aware that the course tutors were taking advice from Chesterfield College so I decided to take a look at what Chesterfield had to offer and started at Chesterfield studying Fashion and Clothing Design. It was a much more creative, hands on course although it wasn't all plain sailing. I hated the first year, it was so stressful and different from anything I’d done before” explains April.

“During the course we attended an exhibition by fashion icon, Alexander McQueen, in London towards the end of year one, to look at our research for year two. I was amazed by what I saw. “It still makes me realise how lucky I am and how much I enjoy what I’m doing. The Alexander McQueen show was fantastic, each room had a different theme and atmosphere to it. The collection came to London from New York for six months and was a one off opportunity for me to see his work.

“In year two every student has to cover sustainability during the cloth manufacturing process. We learned that it takes 2,700 litres of water to make a t-shirt and 8,200 litres to make a pair of jeans. Since learning this I’ve become a bit obsessed with the environment. I remember seeing an advert that followed the recycling process. It showed a boy with a tin can which was followed through the recycling process and Page 24 www.s40local.co.uk

Business became a toy plane, this has always stuck with me and I think influenced how I think today.” With her environmental focus April started to look at how she could make a change to her work and lifestyle, turning vegetarian, taking more time to understand what she’s eating and how making decisions can help reduce her impact on the world around her. By the time she completed her course at Chesterfield she was very clear about what she wanted to do, throughout school she had run an ebay shop and rather than working for someone else she wanted to run her own business.

The result is Blue Oxen, a sustainable, ethical womenswear label. “All material I use is scrap that would otherwise end up in landfill or, if I purchase new is a sustainable product. I scour charity shops, upholstery shops and have relationships with a number of factories and factory shops, but if there is anyone out there who can help with material I’d love to hear from them”. April also uses nettles in her products, nettleyarn has been used for the past 2000 years but lost its popularity when cotton arrived in the 16th century. Today it makes an environmentally sound option.

“It’s also about how the people making the products are treated, a fair wage and price for what they do, ethically sourced.”

What's Rick's favourite day? Fry-day! Beer batter, local spuds and passion, we meet Rick from Chatsworth Road's newest Fish & Chip shop, The Chippy. Words: Paul Chapman Pictures: The Chippy

ick Douthwaite at The Chippy at 134 Chatsworth Road remembers proper fish and chip shops, “As a young boy when you walked into a fish and chip shop you had a simple choice to make, you could have fish, chips, sausages, fishcake, peas, gravy and some scraps… bits of golden batter piled up on top of you chips,” says Rick.

Over recent years many fish and chip shops have expanded their menu and offer far more than the traditional chippy. Rick on the other hand wants to go back to the traditional menu, but to make sure he’s doing it the best he can. “It’s taken a while to perfect the batter, but I think I’ve cracked it and beef dripping is the secret. Fish needs fantastic batter cooked in beef dripping” explains Rick, but don’t be put off if you’re vegetarian, “If I have the time I’m always happy to put something together for a customer, a guy wanted a kebab recently (The Chippy don’t do kebabs), so I put together a fish cob with a pea dip, he loved it and has been back; he even announced recently how much his cats enjoy a little of our fish!” “It’s been a bit of labour of love since I started, there’s no way we were going to use premixed batter, I wanted it to be just right. We use beer from Brampton Brewery (just a few yards away) in the batter and it tastes fantastic. The batter needs to encase the fish for 5 minutes, cook at the right temperature and be golden brown when served. “All our fish is cooked to order, we don’t have stacks of fish lined up on the heaters drying out, it’s so important that it’s fresh.”

The potatoes are from Old Brampton, so batter and potatoes haven’t travelled more than a couple of food miles and support local businesses. Although Rick can’t source the fish locally, he’s taken time to seek out the best for his customers. The Chippy is a partnership between three people, Darren and Daz, two local businessmen and Phil from H&F Home and The Vintage Tea Rooms, who has inspired the rather unusual vintage décor. There’s also a boat on the roof, Rod Hull the fisherman (named via Facebook by customers) and perhaps you’ve already met or seen Dory, the fish dancing on the street and enticing customers in, on a Friday and Saturday night. It’s a little off the wall but it works.

Rick has known Phil for many years and came to The Chippy after Phil approached him for advice, one thing lead to another and now Rick is running things. “I knew we needed to be different, to stand out from the rest, there are a lot of established Fish & Chip shops along Chatsworth Road so it wasn’t going to be an easy ride, I’d describe our offer as restaurant food in a Fish & Chip shop takeaway.”

“We’ve used Facebook to make decisions such as whether to serve thick or thin chips” adds Rick. “We started with think chunky chips but weren’t sure what people thought, so asked our Facebook followers. The response was thin, more traditional chips, so that’s what we’re now serving.

“And I keep looking for ways to improve… we now twice cook our chips, this gets rid of the waste products, starches etc and slightly caramelizes the chip ready for its second cook. It takes our chips to the next level and people’s feedback has been fantastic.” Rick is clearly passionate about what he does, having said The Chippy is traditional, they’re always trying new things, fresh black prawns for scampi, Octopus last week, tweaks to the fishcake recipe and curry sauce, always making sure things are just right.

“We do like tradition…” says Rick, “The Chippy sells pickled eggs and onions, cockles and mussels, roll mops bottles of vinegar to take home, bottles of traditional pop (although they are more expensive than many other drinks) all designed to take you down memory lane.” The response on Facebook gives a flavour of their success, take a look at the quotes opposite.

Gastronamis tempt our taste buds ready for BBQ season.

absolutely love this time of year, a sunny afternoon in the garden, BBQ lit, glass of wine poured! Heaven... and the perfect way to start summer.

If you love entertaining at home or simply just want an excuse for a party, there’s no better way to do it than by having a BBQ. There are so many tasty things you can cook which don’t have to be complicated or time consuming at all. Everyone loves the usual burgers and sausages but why not impress your guests with something a little different. Kebabs are a real favourite of mine and it’s amazing how many different ones you can make. My favourite at the moment has to be Pork & Chorizo with red pepper and courgette. I really do love Chorizo but cooking it on the BBQ really brings out the flavour and makes it so crispy. All you need is some diced pork fillet, chorizo ring (cut into medium size pieces), green pepper and courgette cut into chunks. Thread it all onto a skewer, brush with olive oil and get cooking on the BBQ. The chorizo might end up looking burnt but trust me it’s so nice! Want a side dish to go with that? Then give my baby new potatoes roasted in garlic and rosemary a try. Always a favourite with the guests and sure to be demolished very quickly. Literally cut your baby new potatoes in half and put in a bowl. Coat them in olive oil, garlic (lots of it if you’re like me) and dried rosemary. Give them a good shake, place in a roasting tin and roast in the oven for about 40 minutes at 180c. These are nice eaten hot or cold and perfect finished off with a simple salad. Enjoy Laura x

As the summer term draws to a close, we asked some of our students what the Kip Effect had done for them. Kip McGrath

heir answers surprised us! We expected a list of things they could now achieve and what they were better and more confident at, but all those we asked said things about the difference in parts of their lives, particularly social lives, that we hadn’t considered as a benefit before. At Kip we measure things in terms of academic progress, but our students find it is more about which table they sit on for maths, which group they are moved into for English and even the realisation that a long held dream of a future career is now actually achievable. Young people want to ‘belong’ to a group, to identify with the ‘cool’ kids in the class, or simply to have a solid group of friends to hang out with and be accepted by. For many of our students their teachers spot their improvement and move them up in sets or at Primary school to a new table. The impact on their day to day lives is much more profound. Here are some of their stories… Poppy joined Kip 4 years ago. She was 3 years behind in both maths and English. Her confidence was so low that she would often type an answer into the computer and

then be too afraid to press ‘enter’, such was her fear of failure. As her confidence and ability improved she found her maths too easy, and after some negotiations between Kip and the school gradually moved up three sets. Now she is on target for a ‘B’ at GCSE in maths and English. In her words… “It was great moving up because I was with some of the girls in my year who are really cool! They took up cheerleading and I joined the choir with my new best friend. My mum let me change my hair and my friends and I hang out at weekends. I couldn’t have done it without Kip. I am a new person!”

Oliver is in year 10; he started two years ago with a maths level of year 5. He is now working on material with Sue at Kip that puts him on target for a GCSE grade ‘C’ next year. He is massively more confident and by his own admission when he came to us, he didn’t mix much with other students. In his words… “I really believe I can get a grade ‘C’ next year and I always wanted to be a chef, but needed a ‘C’ in Maths and English. I didn’t think I had a hope of going to college, but now I can start to look and apply for the course I want. I never told anyone my dream

because it was just a dream, now I can do it, I know I can. I am mates with a whole new set of friends and we go and do football together at the weekend. I also like music and a couple of the others are starting up a band, so I am asking for keyboard lessons for my birthday. I am a different person from when I first came to Kip.” Tom is in year 4 and has some learning difficulties which meant that maths concepts were difficult for him to get his head around. He would do something with us, and then a few days later forget it all. He got very frustrated and hated going to school. With small group learning with us, he gradually improved and has just done his SATs and is going on to high School in September. In his words… “I used to be called names because I was so rubbish at maths and stuff. Now I am on a new table and not the bottom one and I have made new friends. Chesterfield Foodbank Helping local people in crisis

I think the majority of people would prefer Chesterfield to be a place without a need for a food bank, but as Ian Birchmore, Foodbank Manager of Chesterfield Foodbank explains, that day is some way off at the moment.

As well as providing emergency food, Chesterfield Foodbank provides essentials like toiletries, nappies and sanitary products to families who are struggling, as well as signposting them to other services in the local area. Chesterfield Foodbank also partners with other agencies to provide additional services such as welfare advice, budgeting help and debt support at the foodbank itself, helping people to break out of crisis.

“New figures show 2,424 three day emergency food supplies given to local people in crisis by Chesterfield Foodbank in 2016-17 – over 674 went to children, compared to 2,122 in 2015-16. “It is deeply concerning that we are still seeing an increase in the number of three day emergency food supplies provided to local people in crisis in the Chesterfield area over the last year.

Heritage Lottery Fund helps supports St Thomas’ tower. St Thomas’ Church, Brampton has received £97,600 from the Heritage Lottery Fund to pay for repairs to its Grade 2 listed church tower. An ugly steel framework has secured the tower pinnacles since one was blown off in 1962. The work will involve properly securing the pinnacles so the framework can be taken away, re-slating the roof and repairing the interior walls at the top of the tower. The grant will also pay for a two year Heritage Awareness Programme to:

• recruit and train new welcome volunteers • deliver a series of walks, talks and tours including self guided leaflets • deliver workshops, demonstrations and events relating to traditional crafts • produce education packs for schools

• train Dementia Friends Champions to run workshops relating to heritage and well being • research and create a booklet

Community Worker, Jane Simmonds said “We are very excited that we have been granted permission to begin our Heritage Awareness Programme. Together with members of the Brampton community we hope to weave local Heritage awareness in to fun and informative events and activities from Spring 2017 onwards.” The work has started on the tower and will be completed in July. The church will remain open at all times. St Thomas Church was built in 1831 as the new suburb of Brampton expanded. It and the adjacent church centre are heavily used by both the church congregation and many community organisations.

Matt Barnes, Rector of the church said “St Thomas’ tower has stood over Brampton for nearly 200 years; it’s wonderful to think that thanks to the support of Heritage Lottery Fund it will continue to be a feature of our townscape for many more years to come. I congratulate everyone involved in securing the resources needed to preserve the historic fabric of our building so that the social fabric of our neighbourhood can continue to flourish in and through our church and community”

Susan's 5,895 metre Challenge

Susan Glover is 19 and from Walton. In August she will be attempting to climb Mount Kilimanjaro to raise money for the charity Childreach International.

"I have always had a passion for working with children which has lead me to study Early Childhood Studies at Sheffield Hallam University. Last year I went to South Africa and worked in an orphanage and a school; here is where I decided that I wanted to make a difference, to make sure every child has the opportunity of a fulfilled life. This is the busy season in the garden, but, as always, the thing to remember is that it should be relaxing and fun, so don't overdo it or try to stick to some fixed timetable about when things should be done. The changing weather has to be considered. 1. Weeds are usually successful because they grow and set seed quickly, so remove them before they flower. Various types of hoe can prove to be the best solution at this time of year. An ‘onion hoe’ is often considered to be one of the most versatile tools if used regularly to cut off the young weeds before established. 2. If you have fruit, you can improve the size of individual fruits by thinning out the buds. Now is the perfect time to train the stems of blackberries and other hybrid berries on a frame or wires and pruning your current bushes to help get maximum yields by stopping plants being overcrowded. 3. Summer bedding plants can be planted out now; soak them very thoroughly beforehand and, if the soil is dry, pour water into the planting hole and let it drain away before putting the plants in, although you should still water them in well – this helps the soil settle. 4. Greenhouses heat up very fast in even hazy sunshine, so they will require the maximum ventilation possible and you may wish to consider some form of shading from now onwards. 5. Creating a regular regime of watering, particularly for tomatoes and peppers, will prevent problems like blossom end rot. Make sure that plants receive adequate watering from this time of year and remember to be consistent. This is particularly important for container grown plants and growbags. 6. All danger of frost should have passed, so any tender plants that have been germinated indoors or under cover can be planted out. Lots of vegetable seeds can be sown directly into the ground now e.g. beetroot, carrots, courgettes, cucumbers, peas, pumpkins and radishes. 7. Stake plants that have a tendency to flop over, especially those with big flower heads. Ideally, the stakes should be about 20cm (8”) shorter than the eventual height of the plant, so they’re completely hidden when the plants start to flower. 8. Pinching out the growing tips of broad beans will reduce possible attack by blackfly and it will promote setting rather than excess plant growth. This technique can also be used on many other herb plants and flowers like fuchsias, a few weeks after doing this your plants are bushier and more compact. 9. Keep earthing up potato plants and if you are growing them in pots or containers remember to continue to add more compost or soil. Harvesting some early potatoes can usually start after 10-12 weeks of growth. Boiling your first new potatoes of the season reminds you why you bother to grow your own vegetables! 10. Why not try to grow herbs that have the added advantage of being friendly to butterflies? Hyssop, lavender, marjoram and thyme all provide good nectar for these pollinators and will inspire you in the kitchen too!
