Hi and welcome to the November edition of S40 Local. This month I’ve been talking to quite a few businesses. Dotique comes to Chatsworth Road, a new ladies fashion boutique adding to the already great retail offer and on a similar theme we meet Jo Bunting from Il Mondo Travel, a new addition at 131 Chatsworth Road offering quality, bespoke travel services. Toad Footwear leaves the town centre and goes 100% online… but still offering the same quality products, delivered to your door, next day. We revisit Inspire Hi Fi, a quality destination for all hi fi buffs and music lovers alike who offer systems to meet any budget, we meet Emma Stevenson from M’s Gallery and M’s Accessories who offers some stylish alternatives to the retail chains and we talk to Defeye Creative, a multidisciplinary design agency and S40 Local's neighbours at West Studios.

Celebrate
THE FESTIVAL Over the weekend of Thu 5 to Sun 8 October people came together again at various locations, to celebrate, to praise, to shop, to eat, to taste, to chat, to watch ... but whatever way people chose to get involved it was again about the community and the celebration was the sixth Chatsworth Road Festival. Helen Rowan kindly went out with long lens in hand to catch some of the moments in our local comunity. Her pictures are shown, for which S40 Local is extremely grateful. If you didn't get involved, watch for 2018's dates, businesses and community groups, make a note and we'll all look forward to fabulous events next year. For 2017, on behalf of the Festival organising committee, thanks to everyone who took part or attended an event. Give yourself a pat on the back. Dotique or Dorothy's Boutique Exciting new retail for Chatsworth Road. Words: Paul Chapman Image: Masai Clothing Company
D
otique is the new business moving into 296 to 298 Chatsworth Road, and giving a new lease of life to the old Johnsons Hardware Store.
The new owner, Chesterfield-based Dorothy Robinson, is excited to bring her already successful online business to Chatsworth Road and offer a range of hand-picked, chic, timeless clothing and accessories to the shoppers of Chesterfield. Dorothy Robinson says: “I am thrilled to be opening Dotique on Chesterfield’s Chatsworth Road to add more vibrancy to this amazing town I’m lucky to call home. It’s such a dream come true to see the shop become a reality, a long-time ambition realised and I can’t wait for local residents to see it too." “The boutique will provide women with stylish outfits from day to night wear from their favourite brands close to home. With the family link to the shop, we are keen to preserve its heritage but also give local residents and those further afield more fashion choices, bringing more business to Chesterfield.” Robinson is a familiar name around here, and Dorothy is married to Guy Robinson,
Page 26 www.s40local.co.uk
Group Finance Director of Robinsons Plc and a direct descendant of John B Robinson, who in 1839 bought a small Pill Box business and started the Robinson PLC packaging business. But what many people won’t know is that the shop, prior to being sold to Samuel Johnson in 1956, had been owned by the Robinson family for over 60 years and therefore Dotique is keen to preserve the traditional character and charm by retaining a number of authentic features including the iconic outdoor canopy and the original front door. After 30 years in the world of teaching, including time at Brampton Primary School on School Board Lane, Dorothy has swapped classrooms for showrooms and says “I have spent the last few months sourcing unique brands and hand-selecting each item to ensure Dotique is the place to find staple wardrobe items as well as those stand-out pieces.” Dotique will stock a range of popular brands that aren’t found anywhere else in Chesterfield including French Connection, Masai, Mos Mosh, Religion, A Postcard From Brighton, and Cream to name just a few. Although Dotique has been trading online since the summer, Dorothy can’t wait to be in the shop as she looks forwards to getting to know her customers and further developing relationships with the local community. “Located on Chesterfield’s up-and-coming Chatsworth Road, which already hosts a handful of stylish boutiques and trendy bars, it’s the perfect addition to attract shoppers both locally as well as those from further afield or simply passing through on their way to and from the Peak District” Dorothy says. “I’ve been overwhelmed by the support from the local businesses on the road and hope that Dotique will further add to making Chatsworth Road a destination in itself.” “I’m hoping that the expanding range of clothing options on the doorstep will mean people feel less need to drive all the way to the big cities to find what they are looking for. The last couple of years has seen more and more independent retailers and cafés pop up on the street and I definitely recommend people come down and take a look if they’re not quite sure what’s here.” When I visited Dotique, I was lucky enough to see the store as the new plaster was going on, and the amount of work that has been done in such a short amount of time is impressive and I’m looking forward to seeing it all again once it's finished. With it being such an old building, there was undoubtedly some quite substantial work to do but it's amazing to see the hustle and bustle of local Chesterfield businesses working together to make this dream a reality. The new store is set over three floors and the layout of the upper floors is fascinating. Dorothy explained to me that she plans to welcome other local businesses in the future to further enhance the
offer under the roof at Dotique. So if you’re on the lookout for a great new space for your business do get in touch with Dorothy. Already taking space at the rear of the store with their own inner boutique will be Eleanor Rose Lingerie, previously based in the unit at 131 Chatsworth Road. Katy Newman from Eleanor Rose says “I am delighted to be joining Dorothy in her exciting new venture and look forward to helping both existing and new Eleanor Rose customers to find the right lingerie for their shape, lifestyle and budget - and of course to suit whatever outfit they might purchase from Dotique. I will continue to offer a free, professional fitting service and stock lingerie in a wide range of sizes from the affordable to the more luxurious, but always with an emphasis on quality and fit. The most popular brands, including Prima Donna, Marie Jo, Chantelle, Panache and Royce, will still be available in store and to order and perhaps more brands will be added over time as I get feedback on what ladies are looking for. Research indicates over 70% of ladies are wearing the wrong size bra if you come down to look at what Eleanor Rose has to offer and have a free fitting, you don't need to be one of them.”
“I’ve been overwhelmed by the support from the local businesses on the road and hope that Dotique will further add to making Chatsworth Road a destination in itself.” Dorothy Robinson. Dotique will be opening for business on Saturday 4th November at 10 a.m. and Dorothy welcomes everyone down to join the celebrations. Personally I’m relieved and excited to see another business opening up so soon after Johnsons closed, it’s good news for the area and I wish Dorothy all the best … and ask that you make a point of going down and supporting Dotique along with our other independent businesses in the area. I’ll leave the last word to Dorothy as she looks forward to the 4th. “I’ve been blown away by the support of people locally who have already made me feel like part of the community and I must thank them all for that. “I can’t wait to open the doors, please come down and browse our range. It will be a day of celebrations so we hope as many people will come down as possible – even if it's just to say hi!” Dotique at 296-298 Chatsworth Road opens on Saturday 4th November from 10 a.m. but if you can’t wait until then, do check out the website at www.dotique.co.uk.

Band saw boxes are boxes made out of wood using only a bandsaw for cutting them out. The wood may be a solid block, a laminated block or a log from the woodpile. Chesterfield born Mel Hurley likes simplicity and function. As a woodwork teacher he loved the practical functionality of the dovetail joint. Fuelled by this love he’s now hand making stylish bandsaw boxes, either off the shelf or made to order. “All my boxes use recycled materials so appearance varies but function and elegance is consistent.”

Inspire Hi Fi Audiophiles rejoice! Inspire Hi Fi can help you indulge your passion no matter what your budget or your requirements! Words: Paul Chapman
B
ack in edition April 2012 I wrote about my love for my old Sansui turntable and all the joy it brought with it. Shortly afterwards, Inspire Hi Fi took a few adverts with us and the old turntable was replaced with a Rega Planar 3, far superior and its used regularly in the office, with the cupboard behind me full of vinyl. However audio technology has moved on a long way in recent years with a vast range of sources available. You can still buy vinyl (even supermarkets are stocking it such is the renewed interest), there are CD shops, you can download to your phone, ipad, tablet or whatever device you choose or you can stream it from a myriad providers on the internet.
'It might sound a bit old fashioned but we like nothing better than talking to a customer about their requirements...' With the number of choices increasing, the technology to listen to it needs to evolve, like me you might still have a desire to physically own something that has the music on it or you might be happy to subscribe to Spotify for £10
a month and have the world’s music available to you. Whatever your chosen route to music, Inspire Hi Fi can make sure you get the best audio experience for your budget. Robert and Felicity are father and daughter and run Inspire Hi Fi from a unit in Sheepbridge, just past the old VW dealership on the right hand side. “We have a reception area, three demo rooms and a manufacturing area upstairs” explains Robert. “We started out ten years ago in a unit in Markham Vale, we sold hi-fis but our USP (unique selling point) was that we made our own turntables, we also upgrade old turntables and the difference we can make has to be heard to be believed. We still provide a great number of upgrades for people who don’t want to move away from their much loved kit, people can get very passionate about a turntable.” And it doesn’t need to cost the earth, a few hundred pounds gets you proper audiophile kit, you can, of course, spend thousands of pounds but Robert is confident they can provide systems to meet all budgets. They can provide amplifiers, CD players, turntables, DAB tuners, speakers, stands, streaming systems, networking systems, multi room, racks and other furniture and a host of other products. “We make the point of being audiophile only, we don’t do TV and surround systems and we don’t do DJ kit.” “We have access to a huge range of products from a carefully select number of suppliers, and we’re very careful to select products that work perfectly together. It might sound a bit old fashioned but we like nothing better than talking to a customer about their requirements, putting together a system to meet the requirements and demoing it for them, before they take it away. We can also deliver and set-up, so any technical issues can be sorted out to ensure the system is being enjoyed to its full potential.” Robert tells me of a recent local customer who travelled to Hull to purchase a system, before coming to them for the rack, not knowing that Inspire Hi Fi could have provided the entire system from just round the corner! The wireless options available are very impressive, on display was a pair of Yamaha Speakers finished in beautiful glossy piano black with a Wi-Fi aerial at the rear, these are powered and you can stream to them from any device or invest in the Yamaha Musicast system that stores and streams to the speakers. No need for amplifiers and cables, just a single pair of audiophile quality speakers… purchase one of the wireless turntables, starting from £179, to accompany the speakers and you can revisit your old vinyl collection.
Page 30 www.s40local.co.uk
Do you have an old component system that hardly gets used because you can’t stream to it or plug the ipod in? From £149 you can purchase a Yamaha Wireless Music Streamer which connects using a RCA connector or mini speaker lead and then enables streaming via Wi Fi, Blutooth or Airplay and opens up a new world of music all controlled from your tablet or phone. The Yamaha system shown on the right plays CD’s, DAB radio, uses Musicast and is Wi Fi enabled, something that should fit any requirement and wouldn’t look out of place in any room. In our house there are four separate music systems, various Apple devices and a PC or two all disconnected and apart from the PC all standalone. I feel a review of access to our music is well overdue and Inspire Hi Fi might just be the people to bring it all together as a networked system! We can’t be unique and more people must have similar problems! Robert and Felicity are a friendly pair and would love people to benefit from their advice, BBC’s Inside out even called in a while ago to talk about Vinyl day. So you must be in good hands, if you’re looking for new hi fi you can’t go wrong starting with a trip to Inspire Hi Fi. Toad Footwear The Evolution of Retail Words: Paul Chapman
“
It’s not the cafes/coffee shops, pound stores, pawn brokers and bookies that make a town centre desirable, but a good mix of independents and popular chain stores that give the town centre a personality, interest and a reason to visit, to pull in locals and visitors alike.”
This was the intro paragraph as I sat and spoke to Drage Thompson in May 2014 who started up Toad Footwear in 2003 with his sister Fiona. Drage and his family have been linked to retail for over 50 years, his parents owning Whites Furnishers until the 1960s, a large Chesterfield furniture store. They commented “we both have sales and service in our genes, you might say.” So why, just over three years later am I sitting again with Drage to understand why that retail business has closed its doors in Chesterfield’s town centre?
“It’s simply down to cost” says Drage. “When you spend 25% of your wage bill on 10% of your turnover you need to seriously look at the books.” So where is the 90% coming from? ONLINE. From an early date Toad was selling sale products through ebay and it was so successful they added the full price products, developed thier consumer website, set up toadfootwear.co.uk and now sell through Amazon… and they do this so well they are one of only 120 online retailers selected by Amazon as an Amazon Prime Retailer. The Page 34 www.s40local.co.uk
selection criteria is based on order fulfilment and feedback, with in excess of 50,000 orders going to Amazon, the small Chesterfield based start-up has established itself as one of the UK’s best Online Retailers. “The scale of our orders enables us to maintain a selection of 26 of the best brands available in the UK. Brands include Dr Martins, Converse, Crocs, Hunter, Melissa, Nike, Puma, Ted Baker, Timberland, Vans, Ugg Australia, Vivienne Westwood and many more” explains Drage, “access to over 1,400 lines when you visit us online in various colours and sizes." “The growth of the Online side of the business was already outperforming the retail premises but not many realised this” Drage goes on, “one lady inquired if we were going to run the business from home! A clear example of people’s lack of understanding on the importance of the web for us.”
Drage is by no means complacent about the future of the business. “Online ‘cost is king’… and your ability to get the order out of the door asap” he explains. “People are driven by cost for their purchase and we need to do everything we can to keep our cost base low. The warehouse is away from the town centre so cheaper than the prime retail space we occupied, there are now 72 steps that don’t need to be ascended and descended to fulfil an order which saves time and the storage layout is far superior and the space gives us other options to consider future ideas.”
“We have had to lose some staff but we’ve been lucky as most of this has happened naturally as people have moved on.” The team remaining have come from the store; Elissa, Laura, Josephine, Abigail, Laura and Drage changing roles but now able to concentrate on the online business 100%. Drage explained some of the future issues independent businesses will face. “The large corporations are constantly developing their relationships with companies like Amazon and eBay. For some of these large corporations I can see a point where they cut out the middleman with just a single route to obtain their products, they will own every step of the order process directly.” So what of Chesterfield’s high street without Toad? “The town centre is changing. The small independent is having a hard time, I’ve lived in Chesterfield all my life and my future is here. “However, there is an evolution taking place in the town centre and I think we’d go a long way to accept it and see how we move to the new model. Service based businesses are thriving and we need to support this move if the town centre is to remain healthy, pleasant and vibrant. I believe hairdressers, beauticians, restaurants, cafes, financial institutions etc, will dominate, there will probably be some of the large chain stores who can afford the town centre rents but I feel little else.
“We’ve seen this as landlords, our property on Stephenson Place has been up for rental and we’ve had over 100 enquiries and of these I think only three have been retail businesses, the rest all service based.” Last time I finished by saying ‘I was really impressed, Toad is an independent retail store that’s doing well, has stayed in Chesterfield and has seen business grow five times through a recession’ and after my second visit the same is true. Toad is a business that is looking to the future, they may have taken the opportunity to go 100% online earlier
but they stuck with the retail store, it wasn’t working and they made a change. To survive any business needs to do this, it’s not about being brave but being sensible, Toad are still available to the people of Chesterfield, you’ll need a device to access the internet and the same quality products are delivered to your door next day. Toad are a local independent business based in Chesterfield, employing local people and welcome the continued support of their customers, just visit www.toadfootwear.co.uk. The last note goes to Drage. “We’ve had some great people come through the door at Stephenson Place, I’ve made some great friends through the business, met my wife too and yes it’s been a sad decision but it would have been much more difficult for all involved had we not established ourselves online.
“I’d like to thank everyone who’s ever purchased something from us for the loyalty they’ve shown, there are some I’d have loved to see before we shut our doors but as you’ve said, we are still here and look forward to turning your order round online.”

West Studios
Defeye Creative
Our virtual tour of West Studios creative businesses continues. Words: Paul Chapman Images: Defeye Creative
T
o support the up and coming businesses and makers in West Studios, the home of S40 Local, I’m committed to raising awareness of their offerings. This month meet Tom, Phil, Matt and Steve, known collectively as Defeye Creative.
Defeye is a full service creative agency, they produce intuitive creative content with video production, design for print, design for web and digital and occupy part of Studio 2, neighbours to S40 Local. The team of four have skills across all platforms, Tom and Matt have a film and video background, Phil, design and Steve, web and online. They all have a University background and met at Chesterfield College where they worked as lecturers. Tom and Matt work part time as lecturers spending the remaining time on Defeye projects. Steve works out-of-hours and Phil is full time. "The world of digital and design is fast paced and we had a desire to work on external projects” says Tom “working on design it’s great to have a channel to use our skills, it helps stay in touch with the external environment and we can reflect this in the time in the classroom." "There are few creative agencies that work across all disciplines, film, design, web and photography. We have skills in each area and between us we offer something unique. "One of our first projects was the rebranding of the Chesterfield Panthers Rugby Club. Defeye, like S40 Local, are Chesterfield Champions and through this community we were approached to look at how we could help the club. With this first piece of work we quickly realised we needed a space of our own, just at the same time as West Studios was looking for creative tenants, we moved in to Studio 2 in August 2014. "Chesterfield College then approached us to put together a video to advertise the college in each of the local Cineworld branches. At this point Phil became full time with Defeye and I reduced my college hours by a day to build the business" explains Tom, "until now work has come from word of mouth and recommendation, the orders are increasing and we’re at the point where we are looking to expand. Reaching this point also gives us confidence to advertise our skills wider, it’s no use growing too fast and not being confident you can cope when the work comes in!" Page 38 www.s40local.co.uk
"As a team we consider ideas, discuss, throw things around to shape them into something to meet a client’s brief" outlines Phil. The client list is impressive; Chesterfield College, Sheffield College, The Chesterfield Panthers Rugby Club, Jones & Co Independent Financial Advice, BBC Radio Sheffield, Doncaster Rovers, The Derwent Pulse Project and a host of other local businesses, both small and large. "Tom deals with client relations and studio management, Matt and I are responsible for creative direction and strategy whereas Steve is our technical specialist" says phil. "There is a learning curve to what we are doing for both us and the wider community. We want to challenge the perception that a creative agency is restricted to a core specialism. We believe collaboration and diversity removes barriers, extends opportunity and maximises the response to a client brief. Collaboration is key and we are a good example of how creative disciplines can be integrated successfully without dilution." "Our next step is to grow the company and increase the number of full time roles that will take us to our next objective in our journey and we’d encourage local businesses to take the journey with us!" The community at West Studios creates some strange opportunities, recently following a corridor conversation it led to yours truly featuring as a mountain biker in a project Defeye are working on for Destination Chesterfield to promote the town. Keep an eye on the Destination Chesterfield site for the video, I’ve not seen any footage yet but I have confidence it will look good. If you’re setting up a business and need some support with the digital and physical media please give Defeye a call on 07540 445107, email them at hello@defeye. co.uk, check out their website or call into the Studio at West Studios. There's Something Fishy Going On... At The Manor
Words: Paul Chapman Pictures: The Manor
T
he Manor is always a busy place and whether you’re calling in to catch up for a chat over breakfast, a quick lunch on the run or wanting somewhere for the family to celebrate, they have a menu to please everyone. New chef Bret Davies has recently taken the position as head chef. “It’s been difficult as our head chef Kath passed away earlier in the year after a long battle with cancer, so it’s been hard looking for a new person in the unfortunate circumstances. We’ve had to go on and we were very keen to make sure we found the right person. I’m looking forward to what Bret can bring to the table” says Craig, owner of The Manor and Fox & Goose businesses. “I specialise in fish” Bret explains. “I ran a fish restaurant in Whitby for 12 years and after working at Calabria for a while I was looking for a new opportunity and I think Craig and the team at The Manor can offer me that.”
Did you know: Batter was traditionally used to coat the fish to keep it succulent whilst cooking it. People didn't eat the batter! “I’m keen to develop the food offering at The Manor, the venue is great and very relaxed, there’s a bunch of friendly, loyal customers and it’s great to see so many families eating here. The pub has won Pub of the Year in the past as organised by Destination Chesterfield and the potential is there to do so again.” Page 44 www.s40local.co.uk
“I want The Manor to have the same reputation for quality food as we’ve achieved at The Fox & Goose, and Bret has some great ideas. His Bistro Board has recently been launched, there's a new breakfast menu and an all-day deli menu” outlines Craig, something for everyone, business people, mothers, toddlers and families alike. The Bistro Board will also give Bret an ideal opportunity to show his skills with fish. For those who already love The Manor, they needn’t worry as favourite dishes such as the Brampton Burrito will remain on the deli menu, there’s a family emphasis on Thursday nights where kids eat free and the popular Sunday Carvery will be updated. The festive period is rapidly approaching and Bret is keen to have everything running smoothly as they start to feed the Christmas party-goers. “Here at The Manor we have some great sell out annual events, The Hog Roast, Bonfire Night plus all the additional nights we put on. Keep an eye on our website and follow us on Facebook to ensure you don’t miss out on some fantastic events” adds Craig.
Classic Moules Mariniere in a White Wine, Cream & Garlic Sauce Served with Toasted Sourdough. You can add Skinny Chips to this from The Manor Chippy section to turn it into Moules Frites.
Halloumi & Mediterranean Vegetable Flatbread with Sunblushed Tomato Pesto from Bret’s new signature flatbread section.
The Brampton Brunch Burrito – a full English Breakfast served in a toasted tortilla wrap. Available every day until 3pm and all day Sunday. You can add some bubbles to your brunch for just £5!
Don't forget to take advantage of the offer of 20% off your food and drinks bill at The Manor as shown on the advert on the previous page! Valid until the end of November - just tear it out and take it along with you.
The Manor and The Fox & Goose are now hiring for the busy festive season. Anyone interested should send their CV to info@ themanoratbrampton.com
The Brulee of the Day! This particular one is Hazelnut & Banana with Homemade Shortbread and Nut Brittle and as this is Bret’s signature dessert dish the content changes regularly on the Bistro Board.

M's Gallery & Accessories
A south coast breeze in Chesterfield’s historic Yards. Words: Paul Chapman
I
f Fat Face, Boden, White Stuff sell your kind of clothing and you bemoan the lack of shopping opportunities in Chesterfield, M’s Accessories offer a similar style and you’re less likely to bump into someone in exactly the same outfit! Directly opposite is M’s Gallery set up and run by Emma Stevenson. Both businesses are located in The Yards on South Street, Chesterfield and proud to be totally independent.
“We started 12 years ago selling contemporary fashion jewellery, mainly silverware, ideal gifts for friends and family” explains Emma, “I wanted to be a bit unique and carefully selected brands I was excited to supply and to support local producers. We have two international brands, Nomination from Italy and Coeur de Lion from Germany. Our British designer makers include Linda Macdonald, Clare Hawley and Tara Kirkpatrick, these three hand-make each item and they come with a British hallmark. We
Page 48 www.s40local.co.uk
then supply Kit Heath and STORM watches, two British brands who are perhaps a bit better known.” “I think it's important to support local and British designers, the selection we have is extremely high quality and I like to know that the pieces we have are unique to the area. The relationship you build with a designermaker is fantastic, you get to know the people behind the brands, you talk to them directly, they become friends and don’t feel like just a supplier, plus it's great to know we’re supporting small independent producers, very much like our business in Chesterfield.” With things running smoothly with the jewellery business, Emma enlisted some additional help which enabled the opening of M’s Accessories two and a half years ago on the opposite side of the entrance to The Yard from M’s Gallery. M’s Accessories brings a clothing range from Cornwall and Scotland to Chesterfield.
Brands stocked include Mistral, Lily and Me and Brakeburn, all designers based on the south coast plus Ness, who are based in Edinburgh. The products in M’s Accessories range from socks to hats and everything in between, skirts, dresses, tops, jackets, jumpers, handbags, scarves and a cardigan in every colour! Prior to opening the store Emma was an assistant manager at Woolworths, around the country. It was this job that bought her to Chesterfield. “Woolies was great but I needed something that worked around me, the travelling was tiring and I decided to make the change. This was a few years prior to the demise of the name from the high street” explains Emma. “Now I can drop the kids at school each day, work revolves around the family and not the other way, it’s still hard work but I love that I come to spend the day with my friend and make a living.” “We’re our own ideal customer” jokes Emma, “when we started up we struggled to find things we liked locally so started to stock them ourselves, we all wear what we supply in the stores and only stock items we’d love to wear. “Our stock changes every few weeks, so we have some very loyal customers who regularly call in to see what’s new. The relationship we have with our customers makes us feel like part of the family. In the relatively short time we’ve been here we’ve seen customers grow with the business, selling jewellery for many events to the same family, proms, driving tests, marriages etc. It really is lovely to see families growing and returning to us time and time again.” With Christmas approaching why not pop in and browse their gifts selection and support this local independent business. Chesterfield Cricket Club End of season round up Words: Abbey Harmsworth Pictures: John Windle
C
hesterfield Cricket Club closed their season last month in fourth place despite a disappointing away loss to Denby CC by just two runs.
Chesterfield’s 1st XI missed out on second spot in the league when they started the afternoon at High Bank. But the loss by just two runs caused them to take fourth sport behind champions Sandiacre Town, Spondon took second and Eckington ended in third. But the club has improved an unbelievable amount over the season, as along with new head coach Andrew Parkin-Coates, they rose from third bottom in 2016 to fourth. Andrew Parkin-Coates was appointed by the club as head coach over the winter. The former captain of the Nottinghamshire Cricket Board Academy XI commented on why he chose to join the club: “I spoke to a number of people about it, people whose view I respected and knew me and what I wanted to achieve.” Parkin-Coates met with Chairman Mike Taylor and last year’s captain Drage Thompson, of Toad, prior to his appointment: “they really impressed me with their friendliness, knowledge and expectations for the club. I knew almost immediately that this was the club for me.” Their start to the season was rather slow and only triumphed once in the whole of April with a winning draw against Alvaston & Boulton at home. Their first win of the season came at the beginning of May where Chesterfield narrowly defeated Marehay by one run. 15-year-old Luke Baddeley had an amazing start to the season being the pick of the bowlers Page 52 www.s40local.co.uk
for two out of three of their first XI matches. Whilst bowling against Cleethorpes in April, Baddeley put the batsmen under extreme pressure as his first six overs had only 18 runs off them.
Veteran Brian Gladwin claimed two wickets in his last 1st XI match for Chesterfield, but he will continue to play and will be an important asset for the 2nd XI in the upcoming season.
Baddeley featured again against Denby in the last game of the season and his bowling was strong – only 14 runs came from his six overs. Ben Jenkins also had an impressive debut at High Bank with just 6 overs for 18. A home win for Chesterfield against Eckington CC on the second to last game of the season saw Josh Savage (pictured left) take the clubs premier league bowling record for the season from the veteran Brian Gladwin.
Both teams highlighted the importance of Gladwin’s role for the 1st XI and he received a guard of honour following the match for giving his life to the club over the years, along with his wife, Sheryl who does a lot for the club.
Savage now holds the record with 53 wickets for the season and despite a very successful campaign at the club he had to return to his native country of South Africa just before the last game of the season. Mike Taylor said “Josh has had a remarkable time with us. Not only has he triumphed with the First XI but he has also helped at all levels of the club.” The South African said he would miss the people at the club but was looking forward to seeing his son when he gets home to Cape Town: “I’d like to thank everyone for welcoming me into the family” he added. Chesterfield supporters said his bowling was the most aggressive they had seen for a long time after a remarkable 8-60 in the win against Sandiacre Town in August.
Chesterfield’s second XI could be looking to mount on their success in the next campaign after finishing third in the Division four North this season finishing just below Spondon who claimed the title and Holmesfield. The second XI’s season hit off with a winning draw at home to Selston Town, but it was soon pulled down by a rocky April and May, only two wins coming in as many months. Their season took a dramatic turn after a five wicket win away at Quardon at the end of May, the second XI’s form improved and after only losing three matches in the whole of June, July and August, they were on track for a terrific season. Both Chesterfield's XI and second XI have prepared themselves for an exciting 2018 season. With major improvements from 2016, both teams moved up six places in the table in the space of just one season and will no doubt be aiming for first place next year. Introducing Hannah, film star, SATS marker, fitness runner, mother and so much more! We have already introduced you to Jo the owner of Kip but now we want to introduce Hannah. Hannah qualified as a primary school teacher from the University of Nottingham in 2006. During her eight years teaching in schools she became a Reading Recovery Teacher specialising in supporting struggling readers. She describes her approach to her work with children as seeking to “harness the curiosity and awe” of the children in her care and is passionate about helping children to grow in confidence to achieve their potential. Hannah’s own potential has already been recognised by Ofsted inspectors no less. This is where the title ‘film star’ comes into play. In a previous Ofsted inspection, Hannah achieved an ‘outstanding’ report from the inspectors who not only filmed her lesson but now use it as a training tool for new Ofsted inspectors. Recommendations don’t come much higher than that! We only work with the best at Kip! SATS are always on the horizon for children and teachers and parents often worry about the grades their children will achieve. We bring on our ‘secret weapon’… Hannah, who is a qualified marker for the Literacy SATs paper so her knowledge of the standards expected is second to none and makes her awesome when working with Year 6 students! When Hannah became a mother she gave up full time teaching, but her love of the job brought her to Kip on a part time basis. The school system’s loss is our gain. She has two little girls and loves to walk off her dinner each evening with her family, so in 2012 she successfully completed a half marathon and has continued running to keep fit. This is further testament to her determination to be the best she can be at everything she attempts. She is popular with both tutors and students alike and not just because of her good supply of break time games which are great fun and get some sneaky maths practice in at the same time… So why not contact Jo for your free assessment and come and meet Hannah for yourself. Who knows she could be the connection your child needs to improve their reading, increase their SATS scores and discover new found confidence in themselves in the classroom.

Nutritious, well balanced meals delivered to your door! New Meals on Wheels service available in Chesterfield In June this year the existing Meals on Wheels service in Chesterfield stopped. Meals on Wheels is a vital service for many elderly people in the UK. The service not only provides a nutritional meal, but it also enables people to live independently in their own home for longer, and help reduce social isolation with the daily contact. It therefore helps both physical health and mental wellbeing. Many of the elderly members of the Chesterfield community relied on this service. If no service was available, the lives of many of these people would be significantly affected. A local family owned business, Park Care Meals were delighted to be able to extend their existing service into the Chesterfield area to ensure local residents continued to benefit from this crucial service. They have been working with the previous supplier and Chesterfield County Council to inform people of the new service. Since July Park Care
Meals have been providing a Meals on Wheels service across Chesterfield and Dronfield. The service offered by Park Care Meals expands on the previous one as it offers meals 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Rik Shipley, Founder and Owner, says of their service “At Park Care Meals we are passionate about providing high quality, nutritionally well balanced food. This along with the daily contact from our delivery team make a real difference to the wellbeing of our customers. We are proud to be able to offer this service across Chesterfield and Dronfield communities.” If you or someone you know would benefit from a Meals on Wheels service contact Park Care Meals on 01709 365 077 or info@parkcaremeals.co.uk. They’ll be happy to help!

Garden Tips 10 Garden Things
Garden Tips Words: Transition Chesterfield Picture: Shutterstock
1.
If you have been organised enough to order bare-rooted trees or shrubs (local nurseries may have some, although the varieties will be limited), they should be delivered sometime this month. Plant them out as soon as possible – it is essential the roots don't dry out, so if you have to keep them for a few days, wrap them in some old sacking or something similar, and (very important) keep them out of the wind.
2.
Prune established apple and pear trees; this can be done any time between leaf fall and buds bursting but early winter days are more likely to be mild and pleasant. Aim for an open, wineglass shape, to allow air to circulate and fruit to form where it will receive maximum light.
3.
Many perennials should now be cut down to ground level, although you can leave those with attractive seeds-heads if they’ve not been made tatty by the wind – grasses can be particularly effective for a few more weeks, especially if they get frosted, and seed-heads can attract birds..
4.
Lawns may still need occasional mowing; keep them clear of fallen leaves, and rake out worm-casts. You can also lightly trim hedges to keep them tidy, but don't overdo it otherwise you'll be looking at bare patches all winter.
5.
Sow over-wintering vegetables – cabbages, broad beans and peas are just some that will grow much faster in spring if they’ve had the chance to develop roots beforehand.
6.
Outside containers should be insulated before it gets consistently cold, by wrapping in bubblewrap. Do this when it’s mild and not frosty, otherwise you’ll just seal in the frost…
7.
Continue to check any bare soil for germinating weeds and deal with them; it's normally easier to get out all of a dandelion root out if the soil is wet. Digging over vegetable patches can be quite pleasant if the weather is good, with the possible added bonus of a robin watching to see if you turn up any worms. But try to avoid walking on wet soil, as this will compact it, then you'll need to dig it again.
8.
If the birds have left you any holly berries which you want for Christmas decorations, protect them with fleece or a loosely fixed bag.
9.
If you have bird-feeders, keep them topped up (and provide fresh water as well); encouraging foraging birds, especially tits, will help deal with over-wintering pests and their eggs, as well as being great fun to watch.
10. Mostly the colder months are about planning for next year, looking at catalogues and ordering seeds. No-one can predict what the weather will be like next week, let alone next year, so you'll have to assume it will be a normal summer – if only we knew what that was any more... On Sunday 3rd December 2017 at the Inspire Community Garden we will celebrate ‘Tree Dressing Day’ an ancient custom all over the world. Come along and discover lots of fun ways you can take part: dressing trees with ribbons, shapes, models, lanterns or any other type of decoration that will make them stand out. Remember to use bright colours! Tree dressing day aims to highlight our responsibility for looking after trees and reminds us of their enormous cultural and environmental importance. See: www.inspirecommunitygarden.org.uk The tenth anniversary Transition Chesterfield Potato Day will take place on Saturday 27th January 2018 at The Pavements Shopping Centre in the town centre. To get the best prices consider making a pre-order before 6th December 2017 for your seed potatoes, onion and shallot sets, garlic bulbs, pea and bean seeds etc. see our website: www.potatoday.org.uk or text 07544 566560 with your name and address for the 2018 leaflet and order form.
