Hi and welcome to the December edition, the last of 2017.
Web:
It will come as no surprise to you that we are encouraging you to spend your Christmas pounds close to home and support the local independents this Christmas. To help you achieve this, we’ve published part two of our festive Gift Guide – with more ideas. Abbey Harmsworth has provided us with a brief history of the Christmas Market, there are quite a few local markets to visit over the next few weeks if you’d like to get out and about.

ach and every year Christmas Markets spring up around the world signalling it is the beginning of advent and, more importantly, it’s Christmas time! This centuries old tradition dates back to a time when seasonal markets took place regularly throughout the year, specifically Christmas markets, which were happy occasions for locals who were becoming weary of the long winter nights. It is often thought that Christmas markets originated in Germany, before it became a nation state, the earliest known Christmas market, ‘December Market’, was situated in Vienna, Austria and dates back to the year 1298. They were traditionally held in a square, with stalls lining the streets with food, drink and seasonal items, similar to our very own today. But, modern markets have taken these traditions and multiplied them. Thousands of towns and villages immerse their streets and squares with strings of lights, decorations and beautiful Christmas trees, in a bid to create the most impressive markets to attract people from miles around. Germany takes the spotlight when it comes to the largest market in the world. The famous Dresden market, which dates back to the fifteenth century, breaks records each year. It showcases over 100 events in its program, including traditional crafts, festive foods, drinks and the infamous gigantic stollen – a traditional German fruitcake. The Budapest Christmas Fair, Tivoli gardens in Copenhagen and Strasbourg in France also excel when putting on a Christmas market. German Christmas Markets were first brought to the UK after the town of Lincoln twinned with the town of Neustadt in Germany. Originally just 11 stalls in 1982, it now takes over most of the cultural part of the town with more than 200 stalls. Over the last 15 years Christmas markets have popped up all across the UK, with so many different cities and towns declaring their own to be the best in the area. Most cities stick to the modern market which has developed over the years to include rides, crepe stands, hundreds of lights, huge Christmas trees and hot pig roasts! Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh and Manchester are among the cities which have kept the German market tradition going. Edinburgh has even adapted their city to having two markets simultaneously, the European Christmas Market located in the centre of the city and a cultural Scottish façade on the outskirts. The award winning Bath Christmas market is set in the picturesque streets that surround the Roman Baths and Bath Abbey. It hosts more than 170 traditional stalls and for this year there will be a snow-globe selfie station! Birmingham hosts the biggest German Christmas Market outside of mainland Europe, and this year is the 50th anniversary of the event! The Birmingham museum and Art Gallery boast stalls with sample pretzels, schnitzels and bratwurst, not to mention the mulled wine! London, Manchester and our neighbours Leeds are all on the list and host hundreds of wooden stalls and chalets containing delicacies from all over the world. All with majestic back-drops for their markets and are definitely great places to spend the weekends leading up to the big day! Words: Abbey Harmsworth Please mention S40 Local · Page 19

Community Christmas Some thoughts on how you can get in the festive mood locally. Words: Paul Chapman Photography: Helen Rowan Photography
W
ith the nights drawing in, the half term holidays and bonfire night behind us, thoughts turn towards Christmas, not in a 'get the decorations up' sort of way… well not yet anyway, but more in a... Who’s making Christmas dinner? Is Mum coming to us this year? Has anyone got any ideas what they might like for Christmas?... sort of way. We also start putting Christmas activities on the calendar, the things that might make us feel festive, or the things that over the years have become traditions.
suits yet. They have a lantern parade to organise on 5th December. The community bring along their own lanterns, some definitely more impressive and creative than others (we definitely fall into the none impressive category!) and join a lovely community event sharing chatter, light and goodwill, as the train of people meander from the Walton Dam entrance on Walton Road at 6:15pm, along the side of Walton dam and into the park, where some refreshments are on hand from the Britannia Inn and music will be played by the Holymoorside Brass Band.
The buying of Christmas presents stretches over a fairly long time period. I hate hitting the shops to blast them all at once… I’m not that committed to the job in hand, I soon get distracted if I have to resort to shopping online, and leave a multitude of abandoned shopping baskets in my wake, and you won’t be surprised that I like to buy as many thngs as possible from our local independent shops. So I’ve already started pottering on Chatsworth Road and in town, visitng the independent shops to see what they've got in and to get ideas. I went along to the Artisan market at the end of October and managed to pick some things up there… I’ll be going back to the one at the end of November to see if I can tick a few more presents off. I also have the food fayre on my list of places I need to visit, I could get food hampers, but I have a very specific mission for that visit – there was a bobble hat stall last time we went, and after the kids bought one each, I’ve had two more requests, so a few more ticked off there!
But local Christmas events don’t stop there…
Abbey Harmsworth has written an article about Christmas markets and shares some dates for ones in the Peak District that might interest you. There are also a host of smaller markets closer to home listed in the What's On.
As the big day approaches we have a choice about the food we buy for the festive feasts – if you have the time this year why not buy some of your Christmas treats locally, and support our independent retailers… Highfield House farm shop, the market, the food fayre, cheese shops and if you want to support local shops, but don’t have time, try Sauced Here, and they’ll do it for you!
The other event on the calendar is the amazing Somersall Park Lantern Parade. The group, who’ve been working tirelessly over the last few months eliciting votes to secure the final funds for replacing the play equipment can’t quite hang up their superhero Page 22 www.s40local.co.uk
Bedecked Christmas trees at St Thomas’ Church are created by community and local businesses who customise their trees (look our for S40 Local's pallet tree complete with large starlights courtesy of Bramptons, Paperstar Lights). This helps spread the word about local groups and raises money for the church. A pleasant gathering with the opportunity for peaceful reflections and social interaction… it runs from Friday 8th to Sunday 10th December. Overlapping in dates slightly with another Christmas Tree festival at the St Mary’s church of the crooked spire in the town centre which runs from Saturday 18th November to Sunday 3rd December. Whilst out in the woods on the path between Walton Dam and Somersall park, the fir tree gets its own festive make-over - you can add your own bit of sparkle to the tree as you pass, or just enjoy the work of the community elves!
Whatever you do, I hope it’s a happy, healthy holiday for you all!

Adam Warwick, Head Chef at Blu Bistro & Coffee House (bottom right): “We’ve been nominated four years running so to finally win is incredible. Teamwork is the key. Everything we do, all 15 of us, we do together. We work as a team and it’s paid off… finally.”

hatsworth Road’s Blu Bistro & Coffee House has been named as Chesterfield’s Restaurant of the Year at the town’s 2017 Food and Drink Awards. Judges described Blu as a ‘hidden gem’ which far exceeded their expectations. "From the minute we were greeted to the end of the evening the whole experience was a sheer delight. A truly exciting, gastronomic journey. The cooking techniques were outstanding, as were the combinations of flavours." It was a successful night for many of Chatsworth Road's businesses and S40 Local advertisers. Bottle & Thyme, who opened their doors in December last year, celebrated its first year in business with a double award win on the night, scooping the titles of Best Newcomer and Best Customer Service. Celebrity baker and couture cake maker to royalty and the A List, Mich Turner MBE hosted the awards ceremony, held earlier in the year in October at Chesterfield College’s Heart Space Building. Organiser of the awards Dominic Stevens, Destination Chesterfield Manager, said: “Once again the Food and Drink Awards were a runaway success with more new names appearing in the winners roll alongside established names. This is a reflection of how the town’s food and drink scene is both growing and evolving, catering for everyone’s tastes, and mirroring the development of Chesterfield as a whole.” All the winners and awards are listed as shown.

Sauced Here A new local alternative to the supermarket basket that supports the local indpenedents. Words: Paul Chapman
N
o matter what our best intentions to shop local and support independent retailers, it can be difficult, particularly if you work full time. You can’t get out to the shops, or you just don’t like spending your free time shopping, AND for many people the convenience of home delivery from a supermarket, ordered online really helps!
But… Luke Osborne, the man behind Sauced Here, is making online local shopping just as easy. The idea is simple. Sauced Here does exactly what the supermarkets do. It enables you to do your grocery shopping online, delivers it to your door AND all the products are sourced locally, supporting independent retailers. They’re currently selling products from over 40 different local businesses under the virtual Sauced Here roof.
It’s good news for small food producers, giving them a new way to compete with the supermarkets.
supplying eggs etc and I’m sure there will be new suppliers added to Luke’s inventory as time progresses. Luke reiterates “There are over 1250 products now online all of which can be delivered to your door at a time you choose. The service offers a full basket of products hand sourced from the area’s top purveyors (including meats, milk, cheeses, fruit & veg, drinks, ready meals etc), all made available via one flexible delivery. Even items that are not produced here in the Peak District are purchased from the region’s village shops or alike.” "The business explores many ways to coordinate bringing stock together for customers in the most efficient ways possible... great business sense but primarily reduces the miles your shopping travels and reduces the impact of your purchase." It’s good news for small food producers, giving them a new way to compete with the supermarkets and enabling you to get your products direct to customers. If you’re interested in selling your products on Sauced Here you can contact Luke at help@ saucedhere.co.uk “The idea came to us on a self-catering weekend away with friends. We ordered food from a supermarket” says Luke. “Only to kick ourselves later when we discovered all the amazing local food shops. The idea for Sauced Here was born! I was inspired to support the local businesses that were closing down, whilst I saw a fleet of supermarket delivery vehicles driving past.” Remember last month’s article about the Fridge? Sauced Here is a fantastic antidote! Delivering artisan quality, convenience and offering a responsible way of shopping that supports our community does incur overheads and some prices might be more than a conventional supermarket, but the feel-good factor and the wider economic advantages for keeping the money in the local economy are huge.
And it’s not just food - they promote and sell local experience days, gardening supplies, health and beauty products, pet products etc. Not only can you get great produce from the small purveyors, but you can also get large brand names, a can of Coca Cola for instance, but it’s sourced from the a village shop in the Peak District! Sauced Here is based in Ashford-in-the-Water and already works with Chesterfield businesses, Teresa Lambarelli of Chatsworth Road supplying pasta sauces, Adams Happy Hens Page 30 www.s40local.co.uk
Luke is very keen to champion the Peak District and Derbyshire and his boxes are delivered to a growing number of holiday cottages around the area. “People tend to start with the basics, milk, bread, butter, as well as packs of meat for the barbecue – and beer” he explains, “but it’s not just the holiday makers we are looking to impress, we want to grow the customer base to include people using us as a viable option to the supermarkets.” In the end it’s down to individual circumstances, economics and choices.

CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS ..... at
So what's our CRIB SERVICE about? The Crib Service is designed to involve every age in a short service on Christmas Eve afternoon. Children (and grown-ups) are invited to come along dressed up as shepherds, wise men, angels, donkeys, cattle, sheep – even Mary or Joseph. Dressing up isn’t mandatory although it is quite fun. This service is a reminder of the real meaning of Christmas with the birth of Jesus celebrated in a very family friendly way. We include short prayers, bible stories and well known Christmas songs and carols throughout – dancing is allowed!

We use beautiful hessian figures made by one of our congregation to illustrate the story and every child has the opportunity to be involved in acting out the Nativity. If your child would rather sit and watch, that’s fine too, but we find that most children can’t wait to get up to perform their bit - and anything can happen! There are lots of experienced volunteers about to welcome and guide you and your child through the service, so why not come along at 3pm on Christmas Eve. Join with us to celebrate the birth of Jesus and have some fun.

“Touch is a primary human need and massage has been used throughout history by parents to ease childbirth, assist in recovery and soothe babies. It's a fantastic method for parents to learn and have 1-1 bonding time with their babies, who benefit developmentally and from the techniques learned. As a new parent, it's probably the first group you will join and meet other new parents. Courses are for 6 weeks and very welcoming. Equipment and refreshments are provided. Continuation after the initial 6 week course is popular as friendships are made and babies enjoy the routine and familiarity of attending weekly”. There is plenty of parking and there are baby changing facilities. Sessions are held every Tuesday morning 10.45 – 11.45am and Wednesdays and Thursdays 10.30-11.30am in the Parish Centre, Walton Back Lane, Walton, Chesterfield S42 7LT. Forthcoming articles will always be interesting and use clear, non technical language. We hope you like them!
Rules of Composition Nowadays, almost everyone has a (sort of) camera with them at all times. We are talking about the ever-present "smartphone", which most of the time includes not just one but two cameras; The "selfies" one and a "proper" one in the back. Now, even when we do enjoy family pictures without the need for them to be works of art, other times we would like our photos to look better. This mini-guide is designed to help us to achieve that goal! 1. The Frame Remember, everything in the frame is YOUR responsibility. For me, this is the key element to photography. So, before shooting, observe, change your position or
perspective, until the whole frame is in your creative control.
3. Foreground, middle and background
2. The rule of thirds
Think about a photograph’s composition as having foreground, middle, and background elements. Everything counts towards the final image. Sometimes, like in Landscape Photography, you want everything to be in focus, some others like in a Portrait, our subject looks better when the background is blurred (we will explain how to achieve these things in a future article).
To help us achieve a nice composition this is one of the oldest rules in the book. It is better explained with an example. Place your subject over each of the intersecting points on the grid until you find the composition that works best for the scene. Some cameras have this optional grid. They can display these lines, look for them in the settings!

Jack's Back C
lub Legend Jack Lester has returned to Chesterfield FC to lead the struggling League Two side up the table, just like he did when he was their striker.
After finishing at the bottom of League One last season, Chesterfield FC has had a rocky start to the 2017/18 campaign. Kicking off their first two months with just one league victory over Port Vale back in August, the mood around Proact is unsurprisingly glum. The club sacked caretaker manager Guy Branston who was appointed as director of recruitment and development back in April and took charge of the club on an interim basis to replace Gary Caldwell, who was sacked just a few hours after their 2-1 home defeat to Accrington, which left them in the relegation zone. Branston took charge of the Spireites following Caldwell’s departure in mid-September as care-taker manager but left after just two games. And the hopes of the town fans were given an unsuspecting boost as club legend Jack Lester was appointed manager not even two weeks after Caldwell’s departure. Former town player Lester joined the club in 2007 from Nottingham Forest, and over his four-year career at Chesterfield bagged 92 goals and made 219 appearances, his personal best at any one club. He played in the squad who received the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy in a 2-1 win over Swindon back in 2012,
Page 42 www.s40local.co.uk
and won them promotion from league 2 after being named champions for a record fourth time in 2014. After his retirement, the former striker was appointed as coach at former club, Nottingham Forest’s U18 side, along with a short stint as U23’s coach in 2017 before re-joining the Spireites. With the addition of Lester who won the league two title with them as a player, Chesterfield are looking to regain some status in the league two table. With Lester leading the way, the Spireites secured a win away at Crawley mid-October to end a run of six successive League Two defeats. Despite a disappointing start to the season and Chesterfield being in 24th place, the win at the Broadfield Stadium has left the club in high spirits and a more positive vibe is being created at the Proact, ready for the lead up to Christmas and the second half of the season. Meet Kelly Bond designer, illustrator, part of the team at S40 Local, singer... and a busy mum. Words: Paul Chapman Illustration: Kelly Bond
F
or those of you who regularly drive out to Bakewell, you’ll perhaps see where the name for Kelly Bond’s graphic design business, 13 BENDS DESIGN came from. A local reference with a creative feel, and the next stop on our virtual tour of West Studios. Kelly doesn’t have a full-time space at the studios, she is selfemployed, but also supports me with S40 Local, doing advert design, layout and illustrating the fantastic cartoons that we feature. Check out this Christmas cartoon opposite (I do have to express my thanks to Kelly for the cartoons, they always show support for the businesses around Chatsworth Road and I am really grateful). I first met Kelly almost 9 years ago when I visited a local print company to get a quote to print the first S40 Local, “I remember you coming in” she often tells me, “I liked the idea of what you were doing” so it’s great for me to know that she’s so supportive of what we do, and I think it shows in the work she does and the support she give S40 Local. “13 Bends Design focuses on graphic design, illustration & print solutions for small businesses” Kelly explains. “I want to open up the doors to the sole traders and new start-ups, to ensure they can gain access to a professional design service at a price that’s realistic and affordable. “My customers range from local tradesmen to small professional businesses such as salons, restaurants, bars & theatre companies. It’s so important for a business to be consistent with their branding and I like to offer lots of services under one roof to ensure a corporate look and feel. Kelly works with lots of local businesses to Chatsworth Road - “It’s important to me that my customers are local, it feels right! I’m very lucky to have such wonderful clients and I’m very grateful for their continued support!” Kelly started out as a cartoonist's apprentice straight from school, “whilst my friends enjoyed the holidays I went immediately into the work environment, finishing school on Friday and starting work on Monday! Attending West Notts College to study graphic design in the evenings. In this first job I was working with many greetings card and publishing companies. At the age of 16 I was seeing my illustrations and cartoons in print. I am very grateful for the training I had as a youngster.” “I spent five years here learning as much as I could before deciding to branch out into the sign design industry where I picked up many skills. including the dying art of screen printing!’ “I then went on to work with local design and print companies before eventually setting up on my own as 13 BENDS DESIGN in July 2016.”
Page 46 www.s40local.co.uk
At this time I was looking for someone to help at S40 Local on a freelance basis, dipping in and out as work required. A friend of Kelly pointed out my Facebook post and it was just a few weeks before Kelly started helping with S40. Kelly’s creative skills don’t start and end with a graphics tablet though, she also sings in a local band The Shambles. Her partner Chris is a luthier (he makes and repairs guitars, Chris Sheldon Guitar Repairs) and he plays in the band alongside Kelly who leads on vocal. If you follow the local music scene chances are you’ve heard Kelly sing, although just recently performing has taken a back seat as she has two small children and her business to focus on. “We will continue to support local charities with our music” says Kelly. “We’re booked to play at the ‘Get Lilia Movin’ black tie event in February, and in the past we have supported Becky Measures and her wonderful charity The Hereditary Breast Cancer Helpline. We try to help where we can for local charities and community projects. For now she is driven and focused on 13 BENDS DESIGN currently working on her website to be launched in early 2018. Through this she’s hoping to open up the illustration side of her business to a wider market. If you’re in need of design support for your present business, or are thinking about starting up a new business and don’t know where to start with a logo, a business card or any element of your branding, please give Kelly a buzz or drop her an email. Who knows, she might just recommend a fantastic local magazine in which you could advertise your start up!

Local weight loss expert shares secrets for a slim 2018 To celebrate the start of 2018, Chesterfield's Slimming World consultant is sharing her secrets for successful slimming for thew New Year. Joanne, who runs a Slimming World group at Derby Road Methodist Church, has already helped members lose 423 stones since she relaunched her group in July 2016. She relaunches at the Zion Church, on Thursday evenings from January 4th 2018. Joanne says: “Lots of people will be making resolutions to lose weight and improve their health this New Year. Successful weight loss isn’t just about losing weight, it’s about keeping it off too. Making temporary changes and going on a ‘diet’ that’s unsustainable in the longterm will only ever be a quick fix, meaning you’ll sadly be bound to regain any weight you lose. If you really want to live happy for the long term, the key is to make healthy, realistic changes that you can keep up for the rest of your life. “Here are my top ‘New Year, New You’ tips to do just that. And you’ll find even more slimming support, advice and inspiration at my Slimming World groups.
N – Never go hungry: Most people who embark on New Year diets fail within days or weeks because they follow plans that are too restrictive, leave them feeling hungry and are impossible to keep up. Slimming World’s Food Optimising programme is flexible and generous, and enables members to satisfy their appetite on hundreds of healthy, foods like fruit and veg, pasta, rice, potatoes, lean meat, poultry, fish, fatfree dairy and eggs. Visit www.slimmingworld.co.uk for tons of recipe inspiration! E – Easy changes to make: Try switching to lean or extra-lean meat, trim off all visible fat and remove skin from poultry. Swap cooking oil for low calorie sprays, whole milk for skimmed or semi-skimmed, sugar for sweetener and calorie-laden salad dressings for fatfree vinaigrettes. W – Write a weekly plan: Spending time to plan your week’s menu, this really pays off; you’ll feel fully in control and know exactly what to get at the supermarket, saving pennies at the checkout and bags of time... and think ahead about any potential pitfalls such as social events so you can plan how to stay on track. Y – You choose: At home, keep your fridge stocked with filling, natural snacks, fresh fruit, vegetable crudités and lean meat. At Slimming World we know that you don’t have to cut out treats completely to lose weight, and having a little bit of what you fancy can do you a world of good. No food is banned at Slimming World. Choose one or two treats per day, a glass of wine or a chocolate bar for example and you’ll feel in control. E – Enlist super support: Changing our habits is challenging, getting regular, effective support is a vital component in losing weight. Slimming World members attend weekly group sessions, led by a trained Consultant who has lost weight with Slimming World themselves.
Joanne (Slimming World consultant) before and then after completing her consultation and the 2016 Sheffield Half Marathon
Join one of Joanne’s Slimming World Groups at either the Lifehouse Church (Zion) group, every Thursday evening at 5pm or 7pm, on Chatsworth Rd, Chesterfield (from 4th Jan 2018) or the Derby Road Methodist Church group, every Saturday morning at 9am or 11am on Derby Rd, Chesterfield.
For further information please contact Joanne on 07988 435571
A – Add some activity: Being active doesn’t have to mean joining the gym or enduring a rigorous exercise regime. It’s important to start off slow and find something you enjoy. Increase your activity levels by taking the stairs instead of the lift or park the car further away from work or the shops. This will boost your weight loss, and your mood and sense of wellbeing. R – Remove Guilt: We all go off-track sometimes when it comes to making healthy lifestyle changes. When that happens it’s easy for us to give ourselves a hard time for not being able to stick with it. However, learning to be kinder to ourselves and recognising that we’re only human can make it easier to get back on track. By following a flexible, generous, plan that fits with normal living you’re much more likely to succeed in keeping weight off in the long term. Here’s to a healthier, happier you in 2018!

Sometimes it must seem to our readers that when we have a student with a difficulty we somehow wave a magic wand and all is well and they progress immediately. That simply isn’t true! The only magic wand we have is the student themselves and the only ‘power’ we have is what they give us when they give us their trust, their vulnerability, their honesty and their dedication to give it a go. Remember that for most of our students they have already been marked down as low achievers in some form at their school by their grades, their teachers and often their peers. We all tend to settle for what is expected of us and by doing that we are in a form of ‘comfort zone’. When the parents bring the students to Kip it is because the parents think they have more potential than they are reaching and the student is usually very, very unsure. After all initially this is another form of ‘school’, another way to be a low achiever or fail in some way. We talk about low confidence levels and low self-esteem but who are we to blame them based on their previous experiences. The ‘magic’ begins at the assessment in two ways. One, the student sees what they can do and two, they meet Jo and have an open honest chat with her, not a bit like in mainstream school where there is little time to spend on a 1:1 personal chat. It is true of all our students but let’s look at Romeo for an example… Romeo came in January this year as a year 5 student and was around four years behind in spelling and three years behind in maths. His confidence and self-esteem were very low resulting in Romeo feeling afraid of tackling new things and expecting only further failure. As usual we started a programme based on his needs and he very quickly began to grow in confidence. His willingness to ‘have a go’ and to learn from mistakes began to produce fruit. He produced his own ‘magic!’ Now he comes twice a week and says…“I feel happy, clever and independent!” and for the first time in his school life he has moved up a table in Maths and he is thrilled!

There were 36 passes in the ringing relay, each involving a bell ringer passing their rope to another ringer while keeping the bell ringing. It wasn't just the ringers changing places: during the relay the ringers changed the bell ringing order more than 60 times, with each bell sounding 1260 rings. Bell ringing is an exhilarating, fascinating and fun activity with a great social life for all ages. Young people and adults learn bell ringing skills in a relaxed and friendly environment, and new recruits are always welcome at Old Brampton. Frederick Thimble Mouse Mansions 3rd Publication
We featured Arabella Stars* first book 'Augustus the Chatsworth Mouse' back in the December 2011 edition of S40 Local and then in June 2012 we helped Arabella lay out and print the second story, ‘Alfie the East End Mouse Saves the Muscle Mouse Championships' and now I’m delighted to say that the 3rd story in this series, ‘Frederick Thimble of Thimble Hall’ is available to purchase from local bookshops. Frederick Thimble was launched in November and tells of Frederick's adventures set in Thimble Hall, Youlgreave, the smallest detached house in the world according to the Guinness World Records. Thimble Hall was previously home to a cobbler so it’s fitting to read Frederick's story set in the property. Page 60 www.s40local.co.uk

Positive Action Godfrey Holmes re-visits the roundabout that gave birth to a motoring charity. Words: Godfrey Holmes Picture: Derbyshire Times
T
he A619 Chesterfield to Baslow Road has a dark history: the Pottery Cottage murders, people lost on the bleak East Moor - as well as several terrible crashes. And when, in the Spring of 1992, Police were called to an overturned lorry at the important roundabout that introduces you to the Chatsworth Estate and the Peak District, they thought that righting the lorry might be the end of the matter. A blockage. An inconvenience. No real trouble. Then, to their horror, rescuers found beneath this local, 38-ton tanker, a completely flattened car. It had been stationary as the HGV lost control and now contained the body of University Lecturer, Susan Williams, on her doomed journey home to Bakewell. The haulage firm responsible - irresponsible - reportedly refused to accept responsibility. Sentences were much more lenient at the end of last Century and are still incredibly lenient for those causing death and injury on the highway. So the veering driver was sent off to do 200 hours of unpaid community service - while his negligent employer was fined £2300 for defective - and illegal - brakes and steering. Three years later, in 1995, Mrs. Williams’ daughter Mary - ironically employed as Features’ Editor for Commercial Motor Magazine - gave up her job in order to set up the Road Safety Charity BRAKE : slogan 'Stopping the Carnage ; Supporting the Victims'. In the beginning, Mary Williams hoped that, with the backing of both the Road Haulage Association and the Freight Transport Association, she might be allowed into very masculine lorry yards to talk about safety. An outsider might imagine that tractor and trailer safety had always been included in the training and certification of HGV drivers Page 64 www.s40local.co.uk
and whilst the majority of HGV drivers are well trained and extremely aware of the potential of the machine they are driving, there are now, and as then, some truckers who can be quite gung-ho. Might is right and 'Just in Time' forces some drivers to get to their drop-off point too speedily to unload and get back to base. The founder of BRAKE, Mary Williams, was a novelty but has worked hard to produce some effective results. In her time she has moved from addressing lorry drivers to addressing scholars in their secondary schools; the future young drivers, passengers and pedestrians. It was not too big a step to gather into one Conference Room parents who had needlessly lost their maturing sons and daughters in the normal commute, sometimes after drinking alcohol, sometimes showing off, sometimes late at night, sometimes giving too many of their friends a lift home. BRAKE is based in West Yorkshire, although its reach is countrywide and international. It is definitely one of the bigger Road Safety Organizations - and one of the most respected. Government Ministers, as well as the Department of Transport, DVLA, the Parliamentary Transport Select Committee, the Highways’ Agency, and the Department for Education, all listen to BRAKE and respond to its campaigns. Some of BRAKE’s recent Campaigns include 'Too Young to Die', 'Go 20', 'Safer Fleets', 'Drive Smart!' and 'Wake Up!'. This Charity never forget its 'Vision Zero' - a stark alternative to attempts to reduce deaths and injuries on the road by 10%. For, logically, the only sensible target must be No Crashes. Road Crashes are not “Acts of God” - nor are the vast majority “Accidents.” BRAKE believes such tragedies can be foreseen and avoided, by at least one party implicated.
So next time an incident occurs, contributing to one of the 750 extra deaths every year usually to the car driver, cyclist, motorcyclist or pedestrian - you might well hear BRAKE on the news. Among many other testimonies, BRAKE has recorded 'Rebekka’s Story' where Rebekka’s mother Lydia talks of her daughter’s death at the whim of a driver engrossed on his mobile phone; and 'Darren’s Story': the UK fire-fighter whose job it is to attend the aftermath of terrible road crashes. Mary Williams, was awarded the O.B.E. in Millennium 2000’s New Year Honours’ List for her work with the charity.
Godfrey Holmes from the Yew Tree Estate, in his spare time is a volunteer educator and fundraiser for BRAKE. His most recent book is called Vehicle in Collision: What did You see? (ISBN : 978-0-9536016-9-1). Please mention S40 Local · Page 65
Garden Tips 10 Garden Things
Garden Tips Words: Transition Chesterfield Picture: 'Poppy' by Robert Nixon Betts

any people put their plot to sleep for the winter. They clear out the vegetables that have finished in the autumn and leave it empty doing nothing until the spring. But it is still possible to leave some root crops in the ground removing them when needed for the table. These include beetroot, carrots, parsnips and turnips. Have you thought of covering your plot with a membrane? e.g. black plastic, weed control fabric or anything that removes light, perhaps even old carpet. This prevents weeds growing and much goodness leeching away out of the soil. It is a good time to deep clean and sharpen all of the tools lying in the shed. A thin film of oil appropriately used is recommended for steel tools put away for the winter too. Outdoor sowing broad beans is still possible if you choose a hardy variety like ‘Super Aquadulce’. If you have a greenhouse or window sill it can give you a tremendous start to next year if, before the end of December you sow such things as peppers (sweet & chilli), tomatoes & onions from seed. This is the time of year to begin to plan for next year, send off for the new season’s seed and nursery catalogues. Some time can also be usefully spent looking through the hundreds of company websites and searching the internet where you can find interesting and new varieties. Don’t be over-ambitious though, only plan for plants where there’s space, Winter is the best time to dig heavy ground, incorporating manure or compost. If you have a decent sized area, don’t try to do it all at once - you’ve got a good couple of months to finish it all. Keep everywhere clear of debris, which can harbour diseases and harmful organisms. But try not to be too fussy; old logs and pile of leaves tucked away somewhere are excellent over-wintering spots for essential wildlife.
Page 66 www.s40local.co.uk
Reduce the watering of houseplants, and mist them regularly to stop them drying out in the central heating. The ideal is to keep them clustered together in an unheated but light room. Make leaf mould at this time. Although some leaves begin to fall in September, the time when the bulk of fallen leaves are available is at the end of November and into December. Why not make a clamp with four posts and chicken wire to a container, put all of the leaves you can collect within it. This weed free soil conditioner is best spread on the ground later in the year. Transition Chesterfield is now able to take online orders and payment for potatoes and seeds for collection at their 2018 Potato Day (January 27th). There are 40 varieties of potato, sold by tuber number not weight, plus onion sets, shallots (both sold by weight), garlic (varieties suitable for late winter planting), plus pea and bean seeds. The website address is: http://www.potatoday. org.uk (if you’re going to grow potatoes, start collecting egg boxes to chit the tubers in). Preordering at discount prices for collection on Potato Day will close on 6th December 2017. At the Inspire Community Garden we are holding a ‘Tree Dressing Day’ on Sunday 3rd December which is an annual opportunity to celebrate trees, to raise awareness of the value of trees, and provides an opportunity for people of all ages and cultures to come together and give thanks to the humble tree. It is open to all ages, you can either bring along your own decoration and we will help you hang it on our tree or make a decoration on the day to hang on our tree or take home and hang on your own tree.
