Lost the Plot? Get an allotment. Words: Paul Chapman

f you can remember any of the New Year’s resolutions you made this year and if any of them involved exercise, get more fresh air, eating more fruit and vegetables and less meat, teaching the kids where their food is grown, meeting new people and reducing your carbon footprint ... Then, to achieve this, an allotment might be the thing for you! Right now the Westfield Allotment Association has three half plots available to rent at for the very reasonable sum of just £15.50 for the year. I met up with plot secretary Rhona and chairman, Eric, at the allotments at the top of Ashgate Road, as you approach town, to look for myself. “The half plots we have available now, typically need about 4 to 5 hours a week to make effective use of the plot" says Rhona. Keeping on top of an allotment can take a lot of time and commitment, we estimate a full plot can take as much as ten hours a week to maintain so the half plots make it more enjoyable and achievable for many people. “The half plots are particularly suitable for people who work and can manage the plot around family life. Some people come down for an hour before work, others involve the children who learn about the life of a plant from seed to harvesting them and cooking the results. “To further encourage the kids to get involved this year we’re holding a sunflower growing and biggest pumpkin competition.” “And it’s definitely not just for young people, our oldest plot holder is a chap called Brian, he’s 81 and is here most days. It’s a great way to keep active, for both the mind and the body.” There have been allotments on the Ashgate Road site for maybe 100 years or more and they are run by a new committee which has been in place for about six months. Ten years ago one third of the 31 plots were unused. Eric explained a bit more about how the allotments work. “There are a few rules

and regulations at the allotments to ensure safety but we are full of new ideas and want to encourage people to take pride in their plot. Many people think councils run allotment sites, but they hand the site over to an association who run and manage the plots, all the council do is collect the rents.” As I wandered around the site I was told of badgers on the site and a ready supply of pallets to construct compost bins! “The site is next door to the Inspire Community Garden” Eric explained, “and we lean on each other for support. We harvest as much water as possible so plots have a supply and typical produce includes runner beans, potatoes, broccoli, cabbages, squashes, pumpkins, fruit bushes and much more.” “I raise a few pounds for Ashgate Hospice” explains Eric, “I keep the paths clear for people in return for a donation. I also enjoy the social side of the site, there’s always someone around to chat to in the summer and we have a team at the Fairplay Quiz night coming up soon. “My father had an allotment and loved to grow his own produce, this love has passed down to me and I too like nothing more than a good harvest from my plot.” Rhona added that “similarly to Eric, it was my grandfather who had an allotment in Sheffield behind the steelworks by the canal in the Carbrook area. I remember as a child going so it’s lovely to have my own plot today.” With the gardens of new houses getting smaller and smaller many simply don’t have the space for growing vegetables so if you’re interested in taking a plot at the Ashgate Allotments get in touch with Rhona on 07771 529669.

The Pocket History of Allotments: Allotments have existed since the early 18th century, with Birmingham encircled by allotments, some of which still exist to this day. The oldest allotment site is thought to be Great Somerford Free Gardens in Wiltshire, created in 1809 following a letter to King George III asking the king to spare six acres from the Inclosure Acts for the benefit of the poor of the parish. Local authorities are required to maintain an "adequate provision" of land for allotment gardens for individual residents at a low rent.

Total plot numbers across the UK have varied, 1,400,000 plots are thought to have existed during World War II. Today itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s estimated that 350,000 plots exist with many people on waiting lists for vacant plots. Allotments are increasingly important as people look for food security, greater levels of self-sufficiency, and a drive to reduce food miles, as well as simply a great hobby. Sheffield Ski Village £22.5m Re-development Words: Abbey Harmsworth Pictures: Millie Wilkinson

n 2012 the Sheffield Ski Village, which produced some of the UK’s most successful winter Olympians, was destroyed by a fire that caused the artificial ski slope complex to shut down... but after six years of closure, the ski village is set to rise from its ashes. The ski village was one of the largest artificial ski complexes in Europe, it homed nursery slopes, a toboggan run and four pistes. The first slope at the complex was opened in October 1988 and its popularity grew so much that by the end of 1990 the ski village was home to eight individual slopes.

Between 1991 and 1994 the ski village had a significant renovation and re-design, a ski lodge, bar and shops were all added and the slopes were redesigned to add a half pipe and moguls. The ski village was the main training ground for the Yorkshire Freestyle Squad and many professional freestyle skiers, including James Woods, who placed fifth in the men’s Ski Slopestyle at the 2014 Winter Olympics and Dronfield's, Millie Wilkinson, 2015/16 Slopestyle British Champion. In addition to the slopes at the village, there were many other facilities open to the public such as quad

biking, laser tag and downhill biking, designed by Sheffield's MTB World Champion, Steve Peat. There was also a state of the art ten pin bowling alley opened in 2009. Sadly, in April 2012, the main building of the village was destroyed by fire, the flames broke through in the early hours of the morning - luckily no-one was injured. Following the initial disaster, subsequent fires further damaged the site as a result of arson. In May 2012, a small hut at the top of the main slope which had controls for the ski lifts was destroyed and just a few weeks later a nursery slope was partially destroyed in

yet another fire. Arson attacks continued as two more fires were started, along with the old pump house being set alight in an incident thought to be caused by a bonfire nearby. The Ski village has suffered a lot of damage over the past six years, including over 50 arson attacks since its closure. Today, with the Sheffield Ski ready to start the ÂŁ22.5m redevelopment, things are looking up for skiers, snowboarders and the Sheffield community.

Last December the council asked for proposals from developers with the intention of reopening the site as a ‘nationally significant attraction’. Extreme Destinations were the successful developer who are the brains behind the multi-million-pound project. The hope of Sheffield being able to reinforce its efforts as ‘The Outdoor City’ is now looking achievable for the not too distant future. In addition to fantastic new ski facilities, the proposal from Extreme includes restoration of the old mountain bike tracks, shops, an indoor climbing wall, restaurants, and an indoor sky-diving facility, as well as

the company contemplating 25 different activities plus the potential to host sporting competitions. The slopes could potentially be opening by 2019, set in one of Sheffield’s natural hills just a mile from the city centre and are ideally positioned for the city and its residents, as well as visitors, whether it be to ski, climb, or bike. The new village will bring more revenue and tourists to the already popular city of Sheffield, and it will also give nearby local communities the chance to re-visit an old hobby, or even start a new one.

"The ski village played such an import role in my career in skiing. Every week I would ski there at least 3 times, anytime I was free I got my parents to take me up. "Now for training we have to travel to the Tamworth or Castleford slopes which costs more money for my parents and both are at least an hour or more away. "Also the ski village had a half pipe which to my knowledge was the only one in the Uk at that time, so to have that facility so close to home it was amazing, today if people want to ski half pipe then they have to go abroad to France or Switzerland. "It's so cool that there is talk of bringing back the ski village I can’t wait to see what happens with it!" Millie WIlkinson.

Chesterfield continues to organise well attended events such as the Rail Ale Festival, the Festival of Cricket, fun days at the market with the 1940’s and Medieval markets, which prove to be very popular. In addition a wide range of events are taking place locally, Barrow Hill Roundhouse will see Jools Holland and his orchestra playing in May, Lionel Richie has been announced at the Proact in June. During the meeting at St Thomas’ discussion focused on future events people might like to see and how we can encourage both businesses and residents to get involved in these events. It is a landmark you can see for miles around. “It is a real coup to get this ride in Chesterfield because it normally operates from big city sites. “We are getting really positive comments from the businesses and traders in the area who say that even during the construction more customers have been drawn in by the sight of it being built. Now the ride is open we are sure it will prove a real boost to the economy and a welcome attraction for visitors.” The Wheel is in town for just one month and operates daily until Sunday 11 March. Blanc Occasions took up home in their new premises at 177 Chatsworth Road, a year ago on February 16th and celebrated by winning Destination Chesterfield Retail Award 'best new store award 2017'. Owner, Anne-Marie, says "the business had outgrown the space at 131 Chatsworth Road and the demand for Mother of the Bride was huge, plus she was so excited by the chance to expand to the beautiful building. hane Calton has come along way from the days when he worked on a computer in the corner of his living room whilst the family watched TV! It’s ten years since he set up Palace Roofline and he’s now at the helm of well this established business, with premises on Chatsworth Road.

“I can remember buying my first van, a cheap second-hand vehicle that did the job. I would go out canvassing in the evenings and weekends, knocking on doors and putting every hour into the business” remembers Shane. He started out as a site engineer working for both local and national businesses spent some time in plant hire and sales before deciding there was a gap in the market for a fascias and guttering company.

Palace Roofline was originally a partnership with Shane on sales and his business partner on installations, but over time Shane took on the whole business. When not at work, which isn’t much of the time, as family holidays are often sacrificed to time at work, Shane likes the outdoors. He's a keen fisherman and is a partner in the ownership of a racehorse. “Six Strings is the name of my horse. His Dad was called Requinto, meaning a smaller, higher-pitched version of another instrument – so Six Strings made sense.” Six Strings had his first win in November 2016, a race worth £15,000 at Newcastle Race Course. Fishing fills the rest of Shane's spare time, either locally at Walton Dam, Carsington or the River Trent. The picture shows Shane with a fantastic Zander caught at Grafham Water.

“I took part in the Trout Master’s competition at Carsington, won the Trout heat and was selected to fish for Carsington at the final round, one of 24 at Grafham water, Cambridgeshire. Andrew Marples: I am the music man. Words: Paul Chapman Picture: Holymoorside Choir

ndrew is at the heart of the choral scene in Chesterfield, he runs four choirs and is heavily involved in a number of musical projects. We caught up for a chat at Elder Yard Chapel, Chesterfield to discuss his up and coming performance at Sheffield Cathedral which brings together almost 160 performers for what promises to be his largest… and he hopes best… event to date. Andrew is a Chesterfield born and bred, he lives in Hasland, his singing career began in Chesterfield Parish Church Choir when he was just ten. He stuck with the choir through his twenties and his University days at Reading. He later studied at the London's Guildhall School of Music where he completed a post grad before returning to his home town in 1989. Today he is a full time musician, a piano teacher locally and in a Bakewell school and thoroughly enjoys his music. “When I came back to Chesterfield in 1989, I very quickly started looking for opportunities to bring music to the town” explains Andrew. His first project involved setting up the Library Lunchtime Concerts. “I initially set up a programme of three small concerts at the Library, which have since taken place more of less every two weeks for the last 28 years.” The concerts feature chamber music, choirs, piano and song recitals plus folk/art music and Jazz. “I was keen to create opportunities for people access to music for free, the concerts have been a great success. Today’s performance was attended by over 100 people and is a typical attendance. I book out the whole year, 20 plus concerts and greatly enjoy listening to the performers and seeing the audiences enjoying the events.”

Andrew is also the organist at Elder Yard Chapel and established performances here as well. These concerts take a similar format to the Library events and take place in the weeks between. “The Elder Yard Chapel recitals have been running for 20 years. Between the two venues we offer something most weeks and provide people with the opportunity to attend free lunchtime concerts.” Andrew often plays in the concerts, either in a lead role or accompanying the performers. “It’s busy but fun” says Andrew. “I really enjoy the concerts, the support from those who perform and those who come to listen has been great and both series are set to continue for a good long time.” I asked Andrew if the same audience attends both venues? “We have quite a large audience base, performers bring followers with them and yes, there is a core of people who attend most performances, but we do get a good mix of regular and new people … and there is always room for more” adds Andrew. He is musical director of four choirs, Holymoorside Choral Society, Baslow Choir, Chesterfield Gilbert and Sullivan Society and MusicWork Vocal Ensemble and rehearses three nights during the week and runs the smaller vocal group at weekends. “The first choir I directed was the Chesterfield Co-operative Choral Society which I took on when I returned to Chestefield” says Andrew. “I’ve always sung in a choir, I’ve spent quite a lot of time in Sheffield cathedral, I simply enjoy listening to a choral performance. Over time I started getting actively

Creative involved in the running of choirs and not just as a singer. Choir leaders are hard to find so I find myself taking on multiple roles. “As musical director I help choirs choose the music, teach and support the choir members, conduct the concert and find other performers needed in support of the choir. Plus attend the weekly rehearsals and performances.” Over the recent Christmas period Andrew was involved in eight concerts, a very busy man. When Andrew turned 50 he decided to bring as many of his choir members together to celebrate. “We staged a performance at the Crooked Spire, getting choirs to sing individually and as one, a funds raising evening for the choirs and was also a great way to celebrate.” This gave Andrew another idea to bring together his largest staged event. April 21st will see him conduct Holymoorside Choir, Baslow Choir and a 50-piece orchestra, the Hallam Sinfonia, as they perform in the Sheffield Cathedral. “The Holymoorside Choir formed shortly after the war” explained Andrew “and although they have sung together as a village choir for many years this will be the first time they will be accompanied by a full orchestra. “Baslow have had orchestral support but have never worked on an event of this scale so it will be great to bring them both together. “We’ll be performing in Sheffield Cathedral as I wanted a neutral venue, it needed to be sizeable to accommodate everyone and I’ve also arranged three soloists, young up-and-coming performers from the National Opera School.”

The pieces being performed on the night will include Puccini’s ‘Messa di Gloria’. In 2016 Andrew travelled to Spain with MusicWork Vocal Ensemble and sang Messa di Gloria with an international choir and large orchestra and was hooked, it was this that inspired him to put on his own event. The second piece ‘The Music Makers’, is quite a rare work of Elgar that isn’t performed very often and requires an orchestra and a large choir to make it work. The performance will be the culmination of a tenmonth project and is clearly a very exciting prospect for Andrew. Tickets for the event can be obtained from choir members, Baslow Spar Shop, the Chesterfield Tourist Information Centre or by calling 01433 631586. Choirs are seeing something of a renaissance at the moment with numerous TV shows following the exploits of choirs and choir masters. Singing is a great way to socialise, it’s good for the heart, mind and soul and brings people together for a common cause. We’ve recently featured the newly established Tuneless Choir in S40 Local and we also have details of another performance in this edition, so things are looking for good for choral singers. An old mantra but one that inspired Hannah a student of whom we are so very proud! This is her story! Hannah had always struggled with Maths throughout her school career and it didn’t get any easier when she got to year 11 and with GCSE’s looming she was in a state of panic. She came through our doors at Kip in 2016 with only a few weeks to go before the dreaded exam day. Jo set about planning a last minute sweep of the syllabus which was all there was time for being so late on. Sadly Hannah didn’t get her desired pass grade that summer but undaunted she went on to college and left us here at Kip. The college entered Hannah for the exam once more and the November re-sits came and went with Hannah waiting anxiously for the January 2017 results. Sadly once more she failed to achieve a pass mark, but did improve her grade overall. To add to the stress and complication for Hannah she now had to swap from the old grade C to A* system to the new grades 1 to 9. This increased her worries, confusion and exam panic. Hannah desperately wanted to pursue a career in social care and needed the grade 4 at Maths GCSE to open the course door for her. She came back to us here at Kip determined to dedicate the next few months to cracking that all important grade 4. She worked with our Maths GCSE specialist Lynda and together they created a clear plan on which to focus. Using Lynda's experience, they decided which topics to work on identified which question types Hannah needed to be confident with in order to get the grade she wanted. Hannah worked really hard, and never let her exam fears get the better of her. The summer exams came around again!!!! BINGO! August 2017 saw Hannah finally achieve the grade she wanted. She is now working on her social care course and the horrors of repeat Maths GCSE exams is a distant, but not dim memory. It is now a requirement for young people to obtain a grade 4 minimum in Maths and English and they MUST keep doing retakes until they are 18. If they go onto college or apprenticeships they still have to keep doing it. Don’t let your son, daughter or grandchild get into that awful cycle of retakes, leading to worse exam fear and repeated failure. The Plastic Pledge Can we do our bit to help? Words: Paul Chapman

ou can’t fail to have noticed the increased focus on plastics and the damage we’re doing to the creatures in our oceans as highlighted by the BBC's Blue Planet programme. Coupled with China’s ban on our exporting of plastics it seems that our reliance on plastic has reached unmanageable levels and we need to do something about it... even those in power have started to talk about it. At home we decided we needed to do our bit, but it's virtually impossible. We’re trying, and it might be making a small difference, but there's still piles of plastic going into the recycling every week, much of it just from our food shopping. But I wonder whether, whilst the supermarkets are slow to react and find it difficult to make changes in their long supply chains, our independent shops might be in a position to react more quickly and support people who want to do their bit. Could our bread shops, cheese shops, butchers, farm shops and market stalls more quickly adapt and offer us other ways of protecting our produce? Far more of the fruit and veg bought from the market is plastic free and if you say no to the bags, that could help. Could butchers encourage people to bring their own containers to transport meat home? Could sandwich shops make salads in people’s own containers, and is there a demand for a return to the old-fashioned scoop and save shops? I know some cafes offer to fill up your cup, rather than sending you away with a paper / plastic cup that you’ll later discard, but could more offer the same service? Holymoorside Bowling Club The days are getting longer and at Holymoorside Bowling Club we are preparing for the new season. A great deal of work, including reseeding the whole green has been completed during the closed season and a new sprinkler system is about to be installed. An evening of song with something for everyone Chesterfield Male Voice Choir Host the Derbyshire Constabulary Male Voice Choir for a fund raising event. Derbyshire Constabulary Male Voice Choir It was early in 1956 that the then Chief Constable, Colonel Horatio Rawlings expressed the wish that “a male voice choir be formed in this force”. A quickly convened meeting in February resulted in the first concert at the Derwent Hospital, Derby on the 6th June 1956 followed by a further 12 concerts in the first six months of the choir’s life. In 1957 the choir became very well-known and successful, performing in an amazing 35 concerts. Over the years they have performed in well over one thousand concerts allowing organisers to raise hundreds of thousands of pounds for charity and local good causes. The choir is made up almost entirely of civilians, maintenance managers, teachers, engineers and a bus driver but despite their civilian roots, choir members continue to perform in police uniform from the 1970's and 80's. Although the 40 current members are predominantly civilian, the choir work tirelessly to promote good relations between the Constabulary and the general public throughout the county. At most concerts the choir are supported by local officers from Safer Neighbourhood Teams who greet members of the audience and hand out crime prevention leaflets and discuss local policing issues. Under the direction of Musical Director, Chris Hare and accompanists Anne Allen and Louise Buxton; today’s choir maintains its well-deserved reputation and strives to provide an entertaining evening at each of the twenty five or so concerts they perform each year.

They feel passionately that if these are addressed survivors are able to make better physical recoveries. Similarly carer's mental health and psychological needs are often unmet leaving them struggling to cope with their caring role and we believe that offering robust ongoing support to carers is vital.

Their ‘return visit’ as guests is 3rd March at 7:30pm at Chesterfield’s Parish Church has been in the planning ever since and is something which both choirs are looking forward to immensely, especially as part of the evening will see both choirs performing together. Supporters of Friends of Somersall Park Campaign There is another rather large thanks that needs to go out from the Friends of Somersall Park (FOSP) Committee to anyone in the community who has supported them. The FOSP group started up after much discussion about Somesrall Park. People love the place but as far as facilities goes the park is distinctly lacking. The area of focus was the playground and the state of the flooring and play equipment. Page 58 www.s40local.co.uk

The Friends established a group and were soon on social media spreading the news of their task with the statement: 'Somersall Park is ready for a facelift. A study of the park has already been completed and a master plan for the site generated. £10K was contributed for the play area in 2007/8 but additional funding needs to be secured. ' Late last year the group had raised £55,000 of the £80,000 target. They then placed a bid with the Aviva funding scheme for £25,000. Next followed a massive campaign,the small committee of volunteers working tirelessly to obtain votes using social media, delivering flyers and talking to as many people as possible.This effort saw them secure over 30,000 to become finalists in their category but eventually losing out to another worthwhile cause. The FOSP group would like to express a massive thanks to everyone who has supported them, shared their facebook campaigns and encouraged people to vote for the funding bid. It was a massive undertaking that secured 32,473 votes. Plus to all personal donations made, rest assured that every penny raised will be spent wisely on the park and play equipment. Huge thanks to everyone involved. They now have £55,000 that needs to be spent so are working on delivering new facilities on reduced scale but something that will be fantatsic and much appreciated by the parents with young families in the area. If you still want to support the campaign via a donation they would still be happy to talk to you, any dontation made will go directly to funding play equipment. Meanwhile their work continues to unearth any potential funding streams and it's hoped that there will be some timescales made public for the changes they will be able to deliver.

id-March onwards is the time to plant out potatoes; assuming that the weather is not too cold. If frost is forecast, simply delay the planting until it is over. Once the foliage starts to show, be prepared to cover it if a frost is forecast; most varieties will recover from a light frost but may be weakened, which could affect the yield. The cover can be as simple as a sheet of newspaper – anything as long as the foliage isn’t directly exposed to the freezing air will usually be fine at this time of year. Plant onion sets and shallots. Birds sometimes think the tips are worms and pull them up; just push them back if this happens. To discourage the birds, run a few lines of black thread tightly over the bed. Give perennial herbs a good tidy up, rosemary and sage can often do with a trim now and you can divide and replant clumps of chives and mint, too. It is the time to buy and plant out young plants of thyme, sage and rosemary too. If the weather is warm the lawn will start to grow, so if there’s a dry day give it a cut with the blades set fairly high. Petrol mowers can usually cope with longer, wetter grass but electrics may struggle, so try not to ever let it get too long. Seeds to sow indoors in March include tomatoes, aubergines, peppers, broccoli, calabrese, lettuce, Brussel sprouts, summer cabbage and try growing beetroot in clusters in modules. Weeds will start into growth, so try to prevent them getting a hold by regular weeding. At the same time you can prepare beds by lightly digging them over, incorporating any old compost you have. Dead head daffodils, letting the foliage die down naturally, then removing it when it starts to turn yellow. This is when the bulb's reserves of energy are restored, and it prepares for next year tying it up prevents this happening efficiently, and doesn’t look nice. There will be a lot more heat in the sun, so open greenhouse and conservatory doors if you have seedlings in them, so they don’t overheat. But clear sunny days often mean clear, chilly nights, so remember to close them again. The winter, so far, has been kind to slugs and snails, so expect there to be lots this year. As it gets milder they will start to appear in the garden, so be prepared to combat them – there are lots of possible solutions (pellets, beer traps, and copper bands) but, whatever you do, you’ll never entirely be rid of them, so concentrate your efforts on precious plants and small areas. Plants in containers will appreciate a top dressing. Carefully remove an inch or so of soil and replace it with a new one suitable for containers; it might seem un-necessary to use different sorts of composts for different places but, especially with pots, the right sort makes a big difference. We’ve now reached the time when the gardening year traditionally starts to get going, so there’s lots to do; keeping on top of it all is the key to success. However, it can be weather dependent - never worry if you can’t do something at the exact time columns like they say you should; relaxing and enjoying it is far more important; get round to things when you can. If you’re trying to get your children interested in gardening then all your good work could be undone by dragging them out into the cold and wet for several hours to do something that could well wait for a week or two.
