Intro Hello and welcome to the April edition, and goodbye to 'The Wheel' I'm missing its striking presence in the night sky.

This is edition 92 of S40 Local and marks our nine year anniversary. This time next year I might make a fuss, but right now I'd just like to thank everyone who's advertised with us or contributed in any way, my graphic designers (Kelly at 13 Bends), my delivery team, Louise, my proof reader and Beccy my finance department! This edition we have two great giveaways. We've some great photography from Ellie Rhodes, a student at Chesterfield College, she has been allowed access to the Old Walton Mill buildings. Ellie's images show the old industrial site as it is today, complete with staged cars and objects used for the Zombie Uprizing events that take place there occasionally, events that are loved by all those who attend I'm told. Each to their own.

We've business news from Brampton Manor, First Class Kitchens and Lime Living who turn ten this month.

By the time you read this we'll probably be into the Easter Holidays, bursting at the seams with chocolate and Egg Hunts and perhaps even enjoying the Spring?

Chesterfield's Walton Mill Words & Images: Ellie Rhodes

My name is Ellie Rhodes and I’m studying photography at Chesterfield College. I chose to go to Chesterfield College after my A Levels at Brookfield Community School to gain more UCAS points because at the time I wanted to train as a Children’s Nurse.

Abandoned places appeal to me because of the contrast of what they look like now and how they looked in their day, and what their purpose was. I love the mysteriousness of the buildings and the history of Robinson’s Mill especially intrigued me.

I’ve always had a strong passion for photography and it wasn’t until I started the course that I realised I wanted it to be more than just a hobby, I wanted a career in photography. I have been applying to universities for photography courses and have secured offers for September 2018.

I think these photos will be really valuable in the future, as Robinson’s Mill develops and evolves into new uses and opportunities.

My work in photography has included commercial shoots, fashion work, derelict buildings and family portraits. It has given me the opportunity to develop my technical skills, creativity and post production editing. The photographs I have taken are for my ‘A Sense of Place’ brief at college, which required me to document a place of interest, with photos, interviews and film.

I am really keen to see how the site changes and would be really interested in photographing it through its journey. Facebook: EKRPICTURES

Walton Mill: Also known as 'Bump' Mill was built in the 1770s by partners Hewitt and Bunting. "Bump" refered to cheap cotton that was manufactured in the 1790s. In 1800 a fire destroyed the building, which was then rebuilt and is locally significant for many reasons one being that it was one of the first in the country to adopt fire safety in its design. One of the rooms still has a fireproof structure of cast iron pillars and beams similar to those developed by Jedediah Strutt. In the 1840s and 1850s the firm was engaged in cotton spinning and doubling, candlewick manufacturing and

bleaching. It was purchased by the Robinson family in 1896 and ran for over one hundred years before closing in 2003.

Today the site is part of the Walton Works redevelopment, a ÂŁ56M scheme that will see the restoration and conversion of the grade II* listed Walton Works building and Mill Terrace together with a proposal for a mixed development of retail floor space, a public house and residential development. More recently the site has been used for Ghost Hunts and events staged by Zombie Uprizing.

Derbyshire Open Arts 26 May to 3 June 2018 Words: Sarah Parkin

hinking of refreshing your walls, home or outfits? Well hold on a wee bit as Derbyshire Open Arts is coming soon. Artists are busy getting ready to open their studios, or group together in bigger venues to show their new work. So get your diaries out and pencil in a trip or several trips out over the end of May Bank Holiday. To whet your appetite, take a look at the website where you can browse over 100 artists showing across Derbyshire - South, North, West and East. For some artisans this is the first time they have shown, or the only time or main show they do in the year, so it is a very special opportunity to get to see their work.

Local to S40 there are artists dotted around the town and beyond. In Holymoorside, where we have over 10 artists showing over two venues: United Reform Church (URC) and the Village Hall with hardy perennials including: Jerry Daniels (photography), Sarah Parkin (Derbyshire watercolour landscapes), Trudy Roe (prints), Valda Sampson (paintings and textile work), Gwenda Culkin (textiles) and Sarah Sharpe (paintings and prints). Roger Allen (watercolour landscapes) who is back after a year’s break and Lesley Platt (painting and embroidery) from Great Longstone. We have two newcomers and first-time-showers to Holymoorside: William Vaudin, looking very promising at the tender age of 18 (drawing and digital art) and Chesterfield jewellers, Alison and Catherine, they will sort out your silver needs. Don’t forget to pop into the URC over the road where we have another group showing including Ann Robson (woven textiles), Dianna Lee (woodgrain art, murals, illustration) and Barbara Coulam (Glass), Eilean Wilding (art textiles) and Sheila Baldock (watercolour/mixed media).

Derbyshire Open Arts event is an excellent way to meet a variety of people interested in art and see their work. As one of the artists showing, I can tell you I love showing my work in this way. You get to talk face to face.

DOA is very inclusive so there is a wide variety of work on show and it often gets people started on their creative career. When you pick up your free brochure available from lots of places including your local library you will see ‘hotspots’ where there are groups and individuals such as in Darley Dale, Buxton, Glossop, Eggington, Bakewell, Cromford and Swanwick, the list goes on. I like showing at Holymoorside, in particular, as the people are friendly and helpful, and the space is light and big enough to show larger paintings as well as space to show smaller products such as framed prints, mugs and cards. We can also fit quite a few in so it makes a good destination for people wanting to get a few viewings under their belt. We also have a team of volunteers running the refreshments for local charities- cakes and light lunches. The other group venues are often run in a similar way, thus you should be able to make several days out.

Top tip on planning your trip is to have a look for the ‘plus’ symbol, which means you have a longer time slot going beyond the Bank Holiday to the second weekend. For example, Xenmint Art Collective Chesterfield is open for longer. All in all, get ready for a grand tour of Derbyshire!

lmost three years since their 25th Anniversary Celebrations exhibition, this latest one is a celebration again, this time of the history of the Derwent Valley Cotton Mills.

Taking place at West Studios, Sheffield Road, the exhibition runs from 14 April to 11 May.

“We’re really excited and pleased to be exhibiting at West Studios” says Barbara. “the space is a muchneeded addition to the Chesterfield arts circuit and a fantastic base at which to display our work within a stone’s throw of the town centre.

West Studios is in the old Boys Grammar School, the fourth building on the right as you come down Sheffield Road from Newbold Road... it’s also a maker shop, coffee shop and a home to changing exhibitions. Saturday 14 April there will be the opening event attended by the Mayor and Mayoress, there’ll also be light jazz performed by ‘Dream a Little Dream’ a local band who will entertain you with some mellow laidback tunes. The opening event is open to all, no tickets or booking required just turn up from 10:45am ‘till 12 noon. Following the opening event, you can visit the exhibition during the four weeks at West Studios Monday to Friday from 10am to 4pm and Saturday 10am to 1pm. On Tuesday and Thursdays of the four weeks members of the guild will be on hand to discuss their work and answer your questions. “The inspiration for the exhibition came when Antonia Stamford had an original idea to celebrate, in print and stitch, the history of the Derwent Valley Cotton Mills” explains Barbara. “In the lead up the guild members were asked to produce pieces of work that represent the industry, members have produced a range of cushions and boxes as well as individual pieces of work that again show, in stich and print, the cotton industry.

“The Derwent Valley Cotton Mills played an important role in the history of this area. People can see our members interpretation of the mills and, if their interest is stimulated from our work, can talk about becoming a member.” Page 28 www.s40local.co.uk

Chesterfield Embroiderers' Guild is a member of the National Embroiderers’ Guild. The guild was formed in 1906 and is a registered educational and museum charity. “The guild holds a collection of historical pieces that have significant influence” explains Barbara. “People often think embroidery is just about tapestry, the Bayeux tapestry known the world over. More locally we have Hardwick Hall on our doorstep with some beautiful historical tapestries on display.

“Art moves on, people think oil paints, water colours, sculptures but textile based art is ever present. Artists such as Graham Sutherland produced the contemporary piece that hangs in the rebuilt Coventry cathedral, and the flamboyant Grayson Perry does a lot of work with textiles. There is a very mixed group of well-known designers and artists now taking up needles and it’s a really interesting field of work.”

The Chesterfield Guild is keen to encouraging people to pick up the skills and pass on their knowledge. See the Chesterfield Embroiderers' Guild website for details and on social media. There is no need to be an experienced embroiderer, they welcome people, both men and women to their monthly meetings. They have 33 members who meet once a month at St Mary's Church Parish Centre. Within the wider Guild people move around and visit presentations and talks at different guild groups, so the attendance at any meeting varies.

The group is clearly passionate about textiles. “We’re not just a bunch of old ladies who sit and stitch crinolines, but people who take textile art seriously and attempt to take it to a higher level in both design and interpretation using new and traditional techniques.” adds Barbara. If you would like to know a bit more about the guild or you’d like to get involved, why not go along to the ‘Celebrations’ exhibition, they’d love to talk to you and they do have space for new blood in the guild and would encourage anyone to come along who has an interest in embroidery and textiles.

s I sit in a quiet corner of a busy Chesterfield café, a gust of mild Spring air rushes in, declaring the arrival of a vibrant middle-aged woman whose energy is nothing short of contagious.

She is author Shelley Chapman, who has recently self-published her first book entitled Menopause Matters.

“Let's simplify the menopause.” The book takes a light hearted approach to demystifying the menopause; far from full of medical jargon stripped from a GCSE textbook, it is an interactive journal designed to assure those who are undergoing a similar experience that they are not alone. “It's a natural process, like puberty in reverse, and there's so much light at the end of the tunnel!” But by no means is Menopause Matters just a book for anxious middle aged women. Chapman sees the bigger picture, and has not only the ambition to paint it, but to hang it in a gallery exhibit. Because, while the symptoms of the menopause are experienced by the individual, their effects are felt by many. Partners, for instance, may feel distanced due to a diminishing libido. It is a change which can have profound effects on a relationship, and it is for this reason which Chapman encourages those of us with a Y chromosome to pick up the book ourselves.

“I'm just me – a housewife who said to herself: 'There's got to be more to this than just growing old.” It is an inevitability that as children mature, the role of the mother naturally subsides. But to where does the institutionalised nurturer then turn? “Suddenly I had time, and I asked myself: 'What do I do with it? I'm not the woman I was at 20, or 30... So who am I?'” And for Chapman it was this question which signalled the beginning of what she refers to as her Menopausal Journey. Such phraseology is the pin which secures the underlying theme of Menopause Matters; for

women to embrace a time of transition as a journey, an opportunity like never before to take control of their lives and send them in the direction they wish. “It’s a time for women to put themselves first.” Chapman wanted answers, and over fifteen years, a uniquely lengthy menopausal duration, it is the answers to which she devoted herself. It is from that dedication that we may now benefit, for that is what Menopause Matters boils down to: a hearty compendium of answers. “There's no one fix fits all, but we can point you in the right direction.” She refers now not only to her book, but to the self-help community she is creating through social media. “...Because doctors aren’t trained to help you apply makeup to saggy eyelids!” She laughs. Chapman offers practical advice borne of the greatest of all inspirations; personal experience. But it is arguably the interwoven thread of positivity, the font of which is very much her own personality, which will not only stay with the reader, but ensure they keep coming back, opening to a random page here, starting a new chapter there. “It's not about hearing everybody's sob story...” Rather, Chapman has created a frank A to Z to which can be readily referred, alongside a digital community based on communication of shared experience and understanding. “We have a giggle,” she told me. “The menopause isn't as scary as you think – as long as you know what to expect.” Menopause Matters can be found on Amazon. co.uk alongside its digital format for Kindle. 'Secret Chesterfield' Did you know Chesterfield had its own magic well? Words: Jack Alexander Pictures: Richard Bradley What about the priest who single handedly saved the town from a dragon? You'd be forgiven, I suppose, for not knowing much about Derbyshire's turn of the century oil rush, or the two hundred Napoleonic POWs who brought glovemaking to Chesterfield.

A new book by local author Richard Bradley, entitled Secret Chesterfield, delves into the histories of our much loved market town. It is a combination of both fact and folklore, of the history which has quietly slipped into obscurity, or was never well-known in the first place, and of the curious customs to be found in our corner of the world. “It's all about the lesser aspects,” says Bradley. “It's a funny old county, Derbyshire...”

Born in Sheffield and raised near Matlock, Bradley found himself from a young age fascinated by local history, folklore and the 'weird events' which took place throughout the year. It's an interest which persisted, and perhaps naturally brought him, after being approached by publishers Amberley, to writing a book on the subject. “The worst thing would be for someone to pick up the book and say: 'Hah! I already knew that!'”

But it's a fear which I am sure is unfounded, for Secret Chesterfield is a cornucopia of the unknown; of the tale of our town and of the peculiar practices of its people, bound to offer more than a few surprises to whomsoever gets a hold of a copy. It was whilst researching for the book that, to his surprise, Bradley found he had a lot of people with whom he suddenly shared an interest. Including a television crew from London.

Bradley had planned a feature on well dressing, the age old practice of decorating wells and natural springs in appreciation for their water, when, overnight, Chesterfield unexpectedly shot onto the world's television screen thanks to an admittedly askew representation of a certain deceased royal. “It's a practice normally associated with the Peak District” Bradley explained. “But actually Chesterfield has been doing a well dressing every year since 1991.”

Now the secret was out, and for all the wrong reasons. “...Given how much work goes into well dressings Page 40 www.s40local.co.uk

across Derbyshire every year, it's a shame it took Diana's wonky eye to get people interested,” writes Bradley. Personally, I hope Chesterfield's well dressers weren't too discouraged and look forward to their follow-up production this year. The world is watching! 'I'm not a native to Chesterfield,' Bradley admits, but we mustn't hold it against him.

In fact, he's a part of an ever-growing number who've found themselves drawn in by Chesterfield's charm. “Growing up … A trip to both the town's library and flea market were, and remain, great treats for me,” Bradley divulged.

And with the recent success of the marketplace observation wheel, with more attractions planned for the coming year, a bit of extra footfall on the cobblestones is something we should all get used to.

With a good deal of redevelopment planned for Chesterfield in the near future, it's as relevant as ever for us to remember our vibrant, and often surprising, past.

remember Lime Living emerging onto the streets of Chesterfield; their striking signage seemed to offer a fresh approach to buying and selling homes – well that was ten years ago. Jamie Wajs and the team at Lime Living celebrate reaching that milestone in April this year.

“Good quality housing stock in Chesterfield is very sought after” says Jamie, “whether it’s property for sale or rental. Properties continue to move quickly and we have a waiting list of people looking for rentals.” I was asking about the state of the housing market. “Many people have recently chosen to stay where they are and improve or extend their homes, which is great” Jamie explains, “it will probably work out cost effective, adds value to their home but it causes a slowdown in the market, things stagnate and at the moment Chesterfield is a great place in which to grow or invest and demand for the family style properties remains high”. Jamie’s background has always been in estate agency work. He started out with a small independent agency, worked in larger corporates and when the family came Page 48 www.s40local.co.uk

along moved back to his home town of Chesterfield to establish his own agency. “I’d worked for an agent who specialised in rural and agricultural properties, which really widens the scope of client you work with. It was perhaps this diverse experience that gave me the confidence to set out on my own” says Jamie. That was early 2008 and, shortly after, property prices took a tumble. “There were quite a few developers caught out by this, people became ‘accidental landlords’ as properties weren’t selling, rather than lose out, owners took to the rental market to generate an income and I saw a significant rise in the number of lettings we had on the books.” Today Lime splits its business between lettings and sales, selling any property, however large or small.

On the lettings side Lime offers a fully managed service, tenant find or advertising only service, they are flexible and can work to any client's requirements. “Many people take the fully managed service” Jamie adds, “we find a tenant, maintain the property and collect the money for our clients, this removes any associated headache for the client, the property runs as a business, clients simply see a BACS transfer each

month. On the flip side we have clients who have a portfolio of properties, these may have people on hand for the maintenance and we are just as happy to work in this way.” Jamie is assisted by Georgia who started as an apprentice five years ago, Nicola who works part time and Katie, Jamie’s wife, who joined over a year ago, giving the place a real feel of a family business.

“We recently opened a satellite office in Woodseats” adds Jamie. “I split my time between the two offices, the Sheffield office has brought in a good number of new property owners and tenants. Many of the landlords, since being introduced to us, are turning to Chesterfield to invest. Prices are good and with Chesterfield being so well placed to commute, serviced by good train lines and road links it really is a sensible proposition.” I asked what had changed over the ten years he’s been in business. “Apart from the legislative changes imposed on the industry, it has to be the impact the internet has had on how we market properties and communicate with clients.”

“Our database used to be a Rolodex card based system, today our database is fully automated, we use DocuSign to obtain electronic signatures on documents, our stock is displayed on the web site and we are always looking at integrating the latest software including enabling people to take a virtual walk around a property before setting foot through the door!”

“It’s a massive step forward, we can do so much remotely and the way we support or service our clients is so different from a few years ago when people would still be taking away A4 sheets with property details.”

Jamie is keen to stress that although they have automated where necessary he believes in the high street and supports Chesterfield through membership of the Chesterfield Champions network. “The high street still needs to exist, we want to see people face to face, the business community in the town centre is still strong and there is a great deal of support from local businesses” says Jamie. His belief in the service-based industry is so strong that he is partly responsible for encouraging his brother to set up ‘Society’ coffee shop and bar at 8 Stephenson Place. “We were marketing it as the previous owners retired, I got talking to Liam and in a short time we were handing him the keys… he does make a fantastic coffee!” Jamie is quietly proud of his ten years running Lime Living, he has met some great clients and friends. He has a laid back approach and it’s perhaps this that’s helped him stay in the game. In collaboration with the West Studios Tenants Open Studios on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th May, this creative group will host their first contemporary exhibition as professional artists. The group will be exhibiting a combination of work created within their courses alongside personal projects.

Throughout the journey these young artists will work with the professional creative businesses based at West Studios. hy do we take photos at all? What compels us humans to take images and preserve them? Much of what we appreciate from the world comes through our eyes after all. I can argue that what really matters to us is the emotional connection that the image represents to us. We take photos because there are things we want to preserve (or to say, if we are artists).

And a photograph is a tangible memory of a moment in time. Not in a lifetime will that moment be repeated again. The moments that we let pass are gone forever. And perhaps this illustrates the emotional necessity we experience when we want to capture a particular image. True, most of the time nothing of what I have said comes to our minds while we are taking a photo. We might be enjoying a moment with our friends or family, capturing a beautiful landscape or even just taking a selfie, and all the time we are just living our life, not worried about some philosophical meaning behind our actions. But even a selfie is a precious moment that has been captured forever. Wellâ&#x20AC;Ś in this electronic era that might be up to the time the smartphone dies or we lose the password to the online backup. But still, the image and

what is there is an event that will NEVER EVER happen again. Sure we can take many more selfies, or we can invest time and money and learn to capture things that matter, like wildlife, or people and print them.

This is why I think it's so important to do it properly. For example, when I take photos for clients, I focus on their goals, their needs, I talk to them to understand their personality, what moves them, how they picture themselves. Only in that way am I able to create a timeless image. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t let time destroy what you are, give your family and loved ones a memory they will treasure. Or preserve precious images of your loved ones as they are today. Now, to do this properly it's important to understand a couple of concepts and to have the right tool for the job. From selfies to corporate portraits to family photos to landscape photography, we need the right set of tools to take them correctly. This is why in the next article I will give you a simple guide that will help you to get exactly what you need, no matter if it is just a decent camera with your next Smarphone, or a dedicated one.

Pomegranate Youth Theatre and Gekkota Arts, Chesterfield have received a National Lottery grant of £26,300 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for new project, 'Not Words'. This immersive drama and art project will explore the visual legacy of local suffragettes, such as Marjorie Hamilton, and how this contributed to the use of strong images by women war artists in World War One.

Ellie Watkinson, a young talented makeup artist, has recently completed her training and is offering a limited number of free trials to spread the news. Thanks to money raised by National Lottery players, archive material will be collected to mark the centenary of the end of WW1 and the Representation of the People Act of 1918, which granted the vote to some women over 30. The project will take as its starting point the banners and symbolism developed by poorly educated women workers to promote their fight for pay and representation.

Working with community groups and volunteers, including young people from 18 to 25, the project will focus on the local stories and imagery of women at a time of rapid social change. It will relate the heritage of visual culture of the past to the contemporary use of branding and image. In an age when so much of our information is digital, it is important to look at heritage contained in the images from previous generations and how they used it to convey meaning and narrative. Working with a local artist, Not Words will explore the images produced by women before and during the war. Young people will discover how they recorded and responded to the need to document the female experience and how it has survived for posterity.They will share their research by developing a new play.

THE POMEGRANATE YOUTH THEATRE AND GEKKOTA ARTS The Pomegranate Youth Theatre and Gekkota Arts offers weekly drama workshops that are available to all regardless of their ethnic or social background at a low cost. It was formed in 2002 from an external drama group consisting of 10 members. It has grown to an existing group of up to 90 young people aged 7-30 drawn from all around the Chesterfield and outlying area. The fun workshops provide a service to teach all aspects of stagecraft with professional facilitators which promote teamwork, social skills, emotional intelligence, creativity and confidence leading to skills for the workplace.

The young people involved choose and explore issues relevant to themselves and the area in which they live as well as legacy and other events from other aspects of life through Heritage research, improvisation, devising, scripting and performing. Gekkota Arts is an extension of the Youth Theatre, made up of a group of long standing Youth Theatre members who wished to continue their journey and further their skills in every aspect of stagecraft. Anyone for tennis? A new season approaches for the Holymoorside Tennis Club

f you happen to be walking close to the village of Holymoorside, you may well hear voices calling: ‘Fifteen-Love,’ ‘Thirty-Forty’, ‘Deuce’ mingled with the local birdsong. That’s because Holymoorside Tennis Club lies on the north-eastern edge of the village in a picturesque rural setting close to the Hipper Valley Trail.

It has been here since 1973, though it began life in the 1930s in a different village location, where cows would sometimes invade the grass courts, leaving unwelcome ‘deposits’. Nowadays there are no such hazards: instead there are three, well-maintained Tarmac courts, a small clubhouse with changing facilities, toilets and a kitchen - and a group of enthusiastic, friendly members. The Club’s chair and longest-serving member, Keith Singleton, says: ‘If you enjoy a game of tennis in beautiful surroundings, come along and join us - you’ll be sure of a warm welcome. All year round there's a regular ‘drop in’ session every Tuesday and Sunday morning, and members’ Club night at 6.00pm on Wednesday evenings from 11th April. We field teams in the Chesterfield and District Summer and Winter Leagues, and there’s also a Club Tournament in the summer with a trophy for the winner.

‘As well as tennis, you’ll find that the Club has a thriving social calendar, with organised walks, treasure hunts, bowling and games nights and other activities open to family and friends. ‘We’ll be holding an Open Day on Sunday 13th May when you’ll be able to meet Club members for an informal game of tennis. y the time you read this it should be properly spring and noticeably warmer. We've had a generally mild winter which lots of garden pests will have survived, so keep an eye open for them. On the plus side, there should be lots of appropriate predators as well as more birds to add their song to the dawn and evening chorus. 1: If you haven't already done so, plant all seed potatoes, they are traditionally planted on Good Friday, Easter being mid-April this year means that remaining maincrop varieties should be planted by now. Remember that most varieties are frost-tender and may need some protection if the overnight temperature threatens to drop below zero. 2: Lots of vegetables (as well as many annuals and herbs) can be sown now - check the seed packets. They will mostly be hardy types (carrots, beetroot, radish, parsnips etc.) and can go direct into the soil, but that may depend on if you’ve had the chance to prepare the beds for them. There's still a chance of late frosts - never sow into frozen soil. 3: If you’re not confident about growing things from seed, there will be lots of seedlings for sale in garden centres. However, they will have been raised in a very benign environment and won’t appreciate going straight outside, especially if it’s chilly, so they need to be slowly acclimatised by being protected at night – but don’t keep them in a heated house. 4: Seeds for tender vegetables can be sown under cover; tomatoes, courgettes, squashes, peppers and so forth. Again, you can buy young plants from garden centres but they can be quite expensive for what you get, plus it’s far more satisfying to grow things from scratch. If they need watering it is better to stand the trays in shallow water until the surface of the soil appears damp, spraying from above can flatten the delicate seedlings. 5: If you are planning a new strawberry bed this year now is the time to save a space and dig in some organic matter such as manure to give these productive fruit crops a really good start. Think about ordering some strawberry plants or runners to be planted next month. 6: Mulching with compost is by far the best way to feed your garden, but if you can’t produce enough or haven’t got a good source, most established plants will appreciate some general fertiliser spread around above where their roots will be, and gently forked in – don’t overdo it and damage the roots themselves. If you only have a little compost, either reserve it for your hungriest plants or use it to cover a thin scattering of fertiliser. 7: As the days warm anything in pots will need to be watered more often, especially houseplants, which should be moved away from places where they are in direct sunlight. Start including a weak feed, increasing to full strength as new growth starts to sprout. 8: If you have fruit trees or shrubs their blossom may be damaged by frost, so try to protect them; this is more important for things like apricots or peaches, which are more vulnerable. Larger trees will to some extent provide their own micro-climate so will suffer less damage (depending on the severity of the frost), and can be left to take their chances. 9: Lawns should be growing faster now, so may require more frequent and lower cuts. You can also repair any patches that have appeared over winter by sowing seed into them; loosen the soil a bit first, and rake the surface. Protect any newly-sown areas against pigeons. 10: There isn't a month when you shouldn’t be weeding, but it’s much more important if he weather is mild!
