Hi and welcome to the May edition. So it's May, the month where we're treated to a couple of Bank Holidays and one I quite like, May 6, is International No Diet Day … and it's National Smile Month organised by the British Dental Health Foundation but I think a great excuse to greet people positively and share a 'good morning'. We've received a community thank you from Christine Duree … “Thank you!!! A sincere thanks to the unknown person who handed in my lost handbag at Sainsbury's recently. You’ll never know the relief I felt when I got the good news.” Congratulations to our winners from last month, Ian West and Bob Flanagan who both receive copies of 'Secret Chesterfield' by Richard Bradley and Mike Hall who enjoyed two tickets to see Heather Small at the Foundry in Sheffield. This month’s ticket giveaway is for Manchester's, ‘Happy Mondays’ who perform at Doncaster Racecourse, see page 16 for details of how you can be in with a chance of tickets. This month S40 Local visited Barrow Hill Roundhouse and we were very impressed with the place, if you're looking for somewhere to visit you should give it a go. The Roundhouse is staging performances and you can enjoy a night with Jools Holland and his orchestra, and Marc Almond in support on Sat 26 May. We also talk to Ray Castleton from the Yorkshire Theatre Company, The Melting Shop, about their performance ‘On Behalf of The People’ taking place at Chesterfield College Theatre. We also have an update on the long list of developments planned for Chesterfield over the next few years and we catch up with Eve from Brampton Brewery as she takes part in a brewing project for International Women’s Day project. £1billion What could Chesterfield do with it?

hether you think a billion has 12 zeros, like me, or 9, you can’t deny it’s a big number.

The 2018 Celebrate Chesterfield event at the Winding Wheel was full of big numbers, the headline being the £1billion (new style, 9 zeros!) of investment planned for projects in and around our town. It’s an event which has been taking place for a number of years now, and I know Rome wasn’t built in a day, but in the time I’ve been attending I’ll admit to becoming a bit jaded. I’d hear the same news each time, a list of things that might happen... But this year it felt different, very different; the dreams and ideas are actually taking shape, and I’d like to take my hat off to everyone who’s persevered to make it happen.. Hopefully you’ll have noticed the work on the old Co-op building and the changed skyline on the Donut, where the Saltergate Car Park has been demolished. There is a new roundabout just off the A61 at Dunston in preparation for the Peak Resort, and the near future should see further changes in many areas around town and beyond. Huw Bowen (Chief Executive of Chesterfield Borough Council) took to the stage. He reflected upon the unique view of Chesterfield which the wheel provided earlier in the year, and outlined the plans for our town. The Northern Gateway – A redevelopment scheme considering Holywell Cross Car park (the Donut), Elder Way and the surrounding area, the changes include: • A £20millon scheme bringing the former Co-op building to life as a 89-bed Premier Inn due to open its doors this winter. Six family restaurants on the ground floor, a Gym and Fitness Centre plus a new landscaped street scene along Elder Way. • Saltergate Car Park is now a pile of rubble, and a new 24/7 car-park is being built on the same site. Later in the year work will start to give us 530 spaces, and this time they’ll all be available for use! One floor of the old car park was closed to customers due to the repairs needed. • A new incubation centre of office spaces and business support services for new and start-up

businesses on a section of the Holywell Cross Car Park (the Donut). The Peak Resort development on the 300-acre Birchall Estate. With funding from Sheffield City Region Grants the new roundabout, footpaths, bridleways and cycleways have been constructed. Enabling the almost £100 million first phase to commence, which includes; • • • • • • • • •

Peak Resort and the Premier Inn will support Chesterfield as an ambitious tourism destination, although it’s estimated 3.5 million people visited the areathere were only 135,000 beds occupied by visitors across the year. Markham Vale continues to grow with Cherry Blossom Shoe Polish being the latest business to take space and bring new jobs to the area. Chesterfield Waterside – The £75 million Phase One moves into the planning stage after an enablement grant from the Sheffield City Regions Infrastructure Fund of £2.7 million. Chesterfield Train Station is at the forefront of HS2, bringing Chesterfield within 75 minutes of London and 35 minutes from Birmingham and Leeds. Together with planned station improvements and a new relief road improving links to The Peak District, it has never been easier to make the most of what our area has to offer. Staveley will be the home to the HS2 Depot, an infrastructure and maintenance depot for the new HS2 link. This will lead to the Staveley Corridor development of Brownfield Sites with a new garden village consisting of 1500 homes plus a school and other infrastructure.

The Glass Yard on Sheffield Road is a development by Blue Deer who were responsible for the 131 Chatsworth Road site on the old fire station site and will include 18 office spaces and a contemporary barn style building, The Batch House, inspired by artisan food and retail halls found around Central Europe, such as Barcelona, Lisbon, Florence and Rome. Closer to Huw’s base, the Town Hall is currently undergoing refurbishment in order to create space to let out to other public sector organisations. The Register Office will relocate to the Town Hall, and other council services will be brought back to the building, enabling their current bases to be sold or let. Chesterfield’s tourist destinations have also seen success with Barrow Hill Roundhouse seeing a threefold increase in visitor numbers since the refurbishment and there are plans to refurbish the Winding Wheel. Looking at Chesterfield town centre, Huw spoke of a ‘mixed picture’ of town centre occupancy figures of 92.4% compared to 87.8% nationally; so doing well.

Outdoor stores Trespass and Go Outdoors have opened up, but Argos will soon move out of town to Sainsburys at Rother Way, and Maplins and Toys R Us have closed down. Small independent businesses continue to open their doors, new real ale bars and artisan restaurants remain popular and provide quality spaces in which to relax and unwind for Chesterfield’s residents both young and old. Chesterfield’s housing stock is to be increased over the next few years, many of the new developments are selling off-plan before being built, such is demand. In 2007 just 430 new homes were built in the region and since then we’ve ticked over at about 130 per year. Targets for the next five years are 1705 homes. Schemes presently in progress will see 597 within the next 18 months, with no impact on the green belt, 62 new apartments to be delivered at Saltergate, with discussions in progress to ensure the target is achieved and even exceeded within the time frame!

Education didn’t miss a mention, with St. Peter and St. Paul ranked within the top 75 prep schools in the country. Chesterfield College and Derby University are also highly rated nationally, and give us a great skills base for the town. Supported by the college, Chesterfield’s Apprentice Town scheme saw 1450 apprentices start last year. Later in the session Derby University’s Paula Holt (Dean, College of Health and Social Care) explained that the average age of students at the St Helena's campus is 27; often people looking to retrain and progress in new areas for their careers. She is keen to develop business links, explaining that, by linking with the University, businesses have access to the entire skills base in the University and not just those skills on offer at the Chesterfield site. If your business would benefit from working with the University on a particular project, get in touch via p.holt@derby.ac.uk Employment in Chesterfield is buoyant, fifty thousand positions this year up from forty-seven thousand in 2017. Unemployment sits at 2.1% last year, down from 4.1% in Jan 2013. Although we’re seeing a positive

shift across the board, youth unemployment figures are higher than the national average, and work is ongoing in this area to support those seeking employment. The presentation concluded with the first showing of the new promotional video for Chesterfield, (take a look at the S40 Local Facebook page for the link… Especially as one of the mountain bikers is yours truly!) and went on to stress how important it was for each of us to spread the positivity. “Chesterfield’s not your typical market town,” Huw finished by saying, and it’s certainly looking that way. The aim in this edition has been to provide you with an overall flavour of the activity and current situation in Chesterfield. “Behind every door is a story,” says Ray Castleton. Ray Castleton does not portray the stereotypical image of an actor/playwright. Nor has his career path been typical. Born and bred in Sheffield, he started his career as an apprentice carpet fitter at the age of fifteen and remembers “day one” when two of the shop stewards argued over which union he should join before he could enter the building. He stayed in the industry and worked his way up to owning his own business, employing five staff and with numerous teams of fitters at any one moment, catering to all your flooring needs. He’d done alright for himself. But like a ripening vintage, when it’s had enough it’s had enough. Ray uncorked his own barrel at 60 when he came home to his wife and declared ‘Bugger this,’ deciding to sell up and follow his dreams in the world of drama. “I’ve been wanting you to say that for ten years,” she replied lovingly, like a character Ray would write. Because Ray likes to write about people, you see. “There’s no such thing as ordinary … Everyone’s got a tale.” Yes, Ray likes to write about people, and more specifically, their stories.

“History’s full of kings and queens, but the real story’s about that bloke who came home from war and went straight back down the coal mine. It’s his story I want to tell.” Tasked by the National Coal Mining Museum of England (NCMME) with writing a play in conjunction with the 70th anniversary of the nationalisation of the industry, 'On Behalf of The People' is a story, written by Ray, about people; a family coming to terms with the loss of one son, whilst embracing the return of another. Based on collections of true stories and extensive research, 'On Behalf of The People' examines a period which re-shaped Britain

and the lives of its inhabitants. The name of the play, taken from the iconic signage posted outside coal mines across the country after the commencement of nationalisation in 1947, reflects where its focus lies; the repercussions felt on the social level. Like mole hills on a bowling green, two names never fail to pop up at the first mention of coal mining; Scargill and Thatcher. But there’s a great deal more to the story of this industry, which became the irrepressible lifeforce of a nation, than two polarised political figureheads. The play’s post-war backdrop gives the audience the opportunity to appreciate the necessity for nationalisation in a time of economic instability, but also highlights an age of new hope. The foundation of the NHS ushered in a new era of healthcare, and the coronation of a young monarch brought about a real sense of possibility and optimism which settled alongside the dust of destruction.

“The play explores a lot of these ideas,” says Ray. “You can’t write a play about nationalisation alone – the audience’d fall asleep.” 'On Behalf of The People' is doused with Ray’s dry wit and down to earth realism, creating an accessible, entertaining yet poignant window into a formative and often under represented period of British social, economic and political history, refracted through the prism of some wonderfully three-dimensional characters whom you may, just momentarily, mistake for your own relatives. Produced by The Melting Shop, a Yorkshire based theatre company, which Ray founded with actor David Chafer, it prides itself on delivering ‘real stories that matter’. 'On Behalf of The People' kicks off its tour with a matinee performance for the students at Chesterfield College, and follows this up with a performance for the public on Friday 25th May. Throughout June and July, expect to see 'On Behalf' at a range of local venues great and small, from Bolsover and Buxton to Wirksworth and Matlock, plus further afield in Derby, Sheffield and Manchester. We had a sit down with Hannah Bowdler, Coordinator at West Studios, to talk about the significance of the collaboration between Ray and Chesterfield College. The recital

Performance room where 'On Behalf' will be performed was once well known for concerts, folk and jazz performances, and even had its own comedy club, but has seen less use by outside groups in recent years. It’s still a key location for student productions, “But it’s under-used,” says Ray. “I can see it as a potential venue for small scale touring theatre companies.” “It is a perfect space for performing arts companies,” agrees Hannah. “What Ray is enabling us to do is create a new template for outside groups to come in, work with the college, and with the students.” Ray can often be seen around West Studios carrying arms full of vintage clothing, muttering his plans to modify. Not to be mistakenly diagnosed as a hipster though; he’s simply taken a hands-on approach to sourcing the wardrobe for 'On Behalf'. Work experience and exposure to the real world of professional performance is what this opportunity represents. The end game is for the students themselves to run the performance space as a commercial enterprise, joining the ranks of current projects such as the PC Clinic and a graphic design company.

“Only so much can be taught from the classroom,” says Hannah. “Opening up this space is not only a great way for the college to connect with the community" she continues, “It’s a chance for our students to interact with outside groups in an environment which is safe and welcoming.” For full tour dates for 'On Behalf of The People' see The Melting Shop website at themeltingshop.co.uk, or find our online article and follow the link. ’m not sure you could have missed International Women's Day (IWD) on March 8, this global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women seemed to take on a new emphasis at a time when gender equality is making headlines.

To jointly celebrate International Women’s Day and women’s role in the industry, the women’s brewing community host an annual event International Women’s Collaboration Brew Day. It’s a collaboration across the globe, where women brewers develop what is collectively known as a Unite brew! Each Unite brew is themed and this year the theme was ‘Exotic’.

“It was great to be involved and meet other women in the industry” says Eve. “We had the opportunity to go behind the scenes and to see how a different brewery operates, as I only see what happens at Brampton Brewery. It was educational and great to see businesses in the same area coming together, and to share experiences with other women in what is a male dominated world.” Chris added “It’s proven that women are better brewers as they have a better sense of taste than men, so it’s good to see more women moving into brewing and see them supporting each other through initiatives like this.”

Brewing has been the domain of women since ancient times, in fact it was only the last 150 years when brewing became more commercialised that it became male dominated.

Look out for Pineapple IPA, if you miss out at the pubs there will be bottles available from Brampton Brewery Beer Cellar at the Business Park (Chatsworth Road), or if you venture over to the Rail Ale Festival at Barrow Hill, there’ll be Pineapple IPA available there.

As smaller and craft breweries have re-established themselves, it’s exciting to see women re-emerging in the process and the industry.

In Ashover a group of local brewers took up the ‘Unite Exotic’ challenge, initiated by Janine Shorrock of Ashover Brewery. Ashover Brewery was founded by Kim Beresford and Roy Shorrock and Janine is Roy’s daughter. Eve Clarke represented Brampton Brewery… and in collaboration with Janine and brewers from Welbeck Abbey Brewery and Neepsend Brew Co. from Sheffield arrived with the pre-requested Pineapple. “Janine had asked everyone to bring a pineapple, so there must have been a couple of dozen went into the mix. We started at 7:30am and were all done by about 4:30pm. The final brew needs to ferment before going into both casks and bottles, so the resulting Pineapple IPA, a naturally hazy beer will be available in the pubs about the time that this edition is delivered.” Eve started at Brampton Brewery as a result of a chance conversation between Chris Radford’s (MD at the Brewery) wife and her hairdresser, Richard at Elysium, who is also Eve’s partner. Eve started working in the brewery in an admin role, but with her background in food she’s now progressed into a full time brewing role. Page 26 www.s40local.co.uk

Everards Make a Difference Award: Matt at The Rose & Crown Each year Everards make presentations of ‘Make a Difference Awards’ at Leicester Racecourse to their estate of 175 pubs and it’s great to hear that Matt Randall from The Rose & Crown won this year’s award. The award is made for pubs that make a difference to the community in which they are based. It’s gestures such as purchasing turf and turnstiles from the old Saltergate ground, celebrating St George's day with a beer festival, hosting community events, private functions, meeting space for clubs (the snug at the Rose & Crown has become an unofficial meeting room for local sports clubs and other societies), the monthly Jazz club etc, and these are just some of the ways the Rose & Crown support our community. ‘Comfort is the enemy of progress’ Simon Paterson, NCS Simon Paterson (top right) works for Future Foundations, and is the Project Manager responsible for delivering the Nations Citizen Service (NCS) programme for Chesterfield and beyond. “We’re dedicated to developing the next generation to become socially conscious young leaders” he says. “If we’re successful we expand the horizons of young people, by giving them access and exposure to activities and situations they may not otherwise have seen. Irrespective of class, culture, religion, sex or creed, we bring them together and open their eyes.” “My job is to make sure the quality and delivery in the regions is up to scratch and that every student has the summer of a lifetime by building skills, taking on new challenges and giving back through social action and charity work.” NCS is available to 15 to 17 year olds, from all walks of life. It’s a four-week programme designed to push you out of your comfort zone, it’s aim is to equip you with skills and knowledge, and to give you the confidence to meet your future possibilities. It’s about providing life skills and perhaps offers a different perspective to the learning at school. “The transition from school to the world of work or university is unknown to young people” explains Simon. “Careers advice has more or less disappeared and up until this point many people won’t have experienced these types of changes” NCS aims to bridge that gap, to offer experiences and skills to manage the transition Page 30 www.s40local.co.uk

and to offer some insight into this next stage, in a managed environment. “NCS is so important. Bringing together young people from many different backgrounds helps break down prejudices and preconceptions through friendship and personal development. It’s about trying to instill a real sense of value, to get the young people to realise that they can make a positive contribution to society and take responsibility and ownership for their own future.” The team in West Studios has grown over the last couple of years, Simon is assisted by apprentice Nathan Harmer and Amy Wadsworth. Nathan was a NCS graduate from 2016 and now works as an apprentice on NCS “NCS for me is a perfect platform for my generation to start to make their impact on the world; hopefully in a positive way!" says Nathan. The enthusiasm of the team is infectious, they clearly care about the young people having a great time and experience on the programme. They visit local schools to present to students and encourage participation, and run the programmes during the school holidays. “Every student in the country is given the opportunity to attend the NCS programme” adds Simon, “there is a maximum charge of £50, with many subsidies available to ensure the scheme is open to all. The sign up to the programme in Chesterfield has been fantastic, since I started in 2016 attendance has grown from a modest 200 students to this year where we have 800 students scheduled to attend.” Once a young person has joined the scheme they take part in warm up events, people are brought together in teams of 15 to bowl, go to the Escape Rooms, attend comedy nights or one of many activities aimed at breaking the ice and getting to know each other and the NCS staff before the real work commences.

The program is split into four phases: Adventure, Discovery, Action and Celebrate. Adventure: takes people away to an outdoor activity centre where the team of 15 undertake a series of adrenaline fuelled activities designed to take them out of their comfort zone and get them bonding as a team. After coming down from the excitement… Discovery: is a week spent in university style accommodation to give the young people a taste of living without Mum and Dad or their guardian, “it’s similar to what you might expect if you travel away to Uni” explains Simon. “They are taught life skills through sessions such as emergency first aid training, they learn about local and global issues and how a small group of young people can have a big impact. They are introduced to informed opinions, encouraged to think about social subjects, stuff they may not have done at school, a representative from Santander comes in to talk about managing budgets and finances.” Action: covers weeks three and four, the teams work in a local environment, such as college, to plan a social action project that will make a positive difference to the local community and its residents. “We want the students to deliver something they can be proud about” Simon explains, “samples include LGBT awareness projects, students placed a rainbow bench in the Crooked Spire to help spread the acceptance and tolerance of the LGBT community. Students raised money to buy tools which enabled them to provide gardening services to Ashgate hospice and they have helped produce CV’s for homeless people to help them get back into society. Projects spanning all walks of life and all delivered without help, the students coming up with the themes themselves and running the activities from inception to delivery.” Celebrate: sees the end of the four week programme. A graduation ceremony takes place attended by local dignitaries, where students present their projects and receive a graduation certificate. “Certificates are something Universities and employers are increasingly looking for” adds Simon. “Attending the NCS programme is good for your long-term future and I’d advise all young people to make sure they take part.” Many young people who attend NCS go on to volunteer time to projects helping deliver social change. 'You can smell the history' Alexa Stott, Barrow Hill Roundhouse

ast summer Barrow Hill Roundhouse opened it's doors after £1.5M of funding, £1.2M from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and £300k from Barrow Hill themselves.

I recently met with Alexa Stott who is responsible for marketing, to talk about the Roundhouse's history and upcoming events. It’s 1991 and Barrow Hill Depot was just 48 hours from being sold, destined for demolition, when a preservation order was placed, thanks to the efforts of one young man, Mervyn Allcock. Mervyn was a train enthusiast as a young lad, passionate about the ‘rolling stock’ or trains to the lay-man. He loved everything about Barrow Hill, and his love of trains taught him in great detail about maths, history, engineering and geography. The depot was originally built to service the locomotives at Staveley works. Steam locos can go forwards and backwards, but prefer to go forwards - it’s better for the operator as smoke and fumes can fill the cab as they reverse! Turntables enable you to turn a locomotive around whilst going forwards, making things much easier, they are also good for storage. Imagine Barrow Hill as a large train garage where you store locos, service and maintain the stock. The tracks that lead from the turntable at each point (‘roads’) are different lengths to allow storage of more engines. So, slightly disappointingly for me, Barrow Hill isn’t actually round - not making the building round also saves money – it’s more expensive to build a round building. In steam's hey day there were around 400 roundhouses, today just seven remain, mostly turned into diesel sheds. The six that remain include Derby, Camden, Carnforth, Market Wellingborough, Leeds and Barrow Hill ... and none of those remaining house a turntable except Barrow Hill. The Barrow Hill site closed in 1991 and the preservation order resulted in a grade II listing. The saviour of the site, Mervyn, established the Barrow Hill Engine Sheds Society, a charity with the aim of purchasing the site from the British Railways Property Board. Finally, after several years, an agreement was made to sell the site to Chesterfield Borough Council, who now leases the site to the Society.

The Barrow Hill Engine Shed Society led by Mervyn took over management of the site. It had been heavily vandalised and was in a poor state of repair. They obtained £300k of funding to replace the roof, install a rainwater

harvesting syetsm and to get the clean-up underway. Next was to establish the site as an operating business and museum to create an income stream. Many locos are privately owned, and Barrow Hill was able to offer storage and service facilities. Since then, two heavy engineering workshops have been built to use for modern rail maintenance, repair and modiication. The depot is rail connected to the national rail network and is accessible 24/7. Current customers include Network Rail, DB Schenker Cargo, DRS, Freightliner, GBRF, Colas, West Coast Railways and VSOE (Orient Express). Mervyn is still very much involved, and manages Barrow Hill, overseeing the running of the depot and the refurbishment project. Thanks to the Heritage Lottery Fund, Barrow Hill has a new café and reception area, refurbished rooms, an area to display items from the museum collection which were previously in storage (displayed in museum rooms). The scheme has funded a project manager and a learning and education officer. The recruitment of these roles has allowed Barrow Hill to support school visits during the week, these are often planned around the curriculum in the visiting school.

Did you know: Steam locomotives are better suited to harvested rain water as it’s natural and reduces build up of limescale deposits in boilers. Barrow Hill harvests rainwater specifically for this purpose… and to flush the toilets. The project has been a huge success and has been highly commended by the HLF, not bad for a depot that was due to be demolished. Alongside the rail infrastructure and history, the depot has also become a destination for events. The Rail Ale Festival, has become a well known feature on the events calendar - this year’s festival

over the weekend of Thursday 17 to Saturday 19 May will see 350 real ales, ciders, craft and world beers together with Prosecco bar and Gin Palace taking centre stage. On Saturday 26 May Jools Holland and his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra, supported by Marc Almond, will perform at the site for the second time. Jools contacted the Roundhouse to ask if he could return, after being so impressed on his last visit (a few tickets are still available if you’re interested in seeing Jools). These two events between them will bring in excess of 10,000 people to the Roundhouse, many of the attendees visiting the site for the first time. Rick Wakeman and Paul Carrack have also performed at the depot in the past and the Roundhouse also hosts many smaller events throughout the year. A Father’s Day event will see an 80s band play, an archaeological week will take place in July looking to find evidence of terrace houses from the Long Row which stood on the site of the present car park. Science days & garden days are planned to entertain and educate the younger generations, plus a number of seasonal activities are planned. Barrow Hill brings history to life, it’s one of the must visit destinations Chesterfield has to offer. We should all know its importance in helping shape the industrial heritage of our county. I have to admit… I see myself as an ambassador for Chesterfield and all it has to offer, yet I haven’t yet visited with the family. I wonder how many other local people have missed this gem – and at only £8 for a family it’s great value. Barrow Hill is open between March to December (the shed is far too cold over the winter). However they all need these three things to succeed. A typical session at Kip will contain up to five students, all working individually. Here is one such session containing three very different students. These are their stories…

James aged 6, enjoyed school but was finding it difficult to ‘get going’. He had good social skills; was enthusiastic to learn and very willing, but reading and writing were just not clicking for him. His initial assessment showed he had basic letter recognition in place but he hadn’t begun to identify blended sounds (sounds made up of more than one letter) and this was holding back his reading. His actual reading age was too low to be assessed accurately.

Lucy aged 11 had a number of goals. She was keen to try for a scholarship for a boarding school and needed to pass both a tough entrance exam and achieve good scores in her year 6 SATs. Once again, an individual plan was put together based on her initial assessment. This took into account the needs of the school entrance exam and the SATs syllabus.

Amy aged 9 had a number of physical and learning difficulties, found concentration tricky and found it hard to know quite how to behave socially within a group. Amy’s initial plan needed to address all her needs and focussed on both academic and social skills.

So what happened? Well as you can imagine in a normal classroom environment these very different students would have had no interaction at all and yet in the Kip classroom, away from their natural peer groups, these three students bonded and supported each other, cheering each other on when one of them achieved a milestone, encouraging each other and laughing at common jokes from their tutor. Each of them moved on socially and experienced a very important lesson in life… people may be different from you but it doesn’t mean you can’t like and accept them. Each student achieved individually but as a group socially they achieved so much more ‘humanity’ towards each other. The results… James’ reading age showed an improvement of 2 years! Lucy achieved the school entrance exam and the scholarship is under her belt. Amy improved her reading age by 18 months and her spelling by a year. Being in the small group helped her social skills really begin to take off.

OPEN DAY Inspire Community Garden Sunday 13 May 11am to 3pm

The inspire Community Garden was formed by members of the community group Transition Chesterfield who started a search for a site in which to demonstrate organic gardening following permaculture principles in the spring of 2016. They found a site which lies between the Westfield Allotments, off Ashgate Road, and the Fairplay Children’s Charity Garden off Alexandra Road West near to Chesterfield town centre and so began ‘The Inspire Community Garden’. They have turned what was wasteland into a very productive and informative garden where the town and the community can benefit in a variety of ways. In the spring they started their weekly workshops at the garden. This was later than normal to allow some of

the main construction jobs to be completed before they welcome many new visitors. These sessions are aimed at interested people with limited knowledge of the subjects covered, content will suit people with some knowledge or absolute beginners. They're keen to welcome new gardeners and children. The sessions last between one and one hour 30 minutes unless otherwise stated, £2 per person to help raise funds for the gardens.

On Sunday 13 May they are having an Open Day & Plant Sale and would love to see as many residents from the community to show people exactly what they've been up to and hopefully inspire people to get involved or to use the space in their own gardens. There will be demonstrations, plants for sale the Pizza Oven will be fired up amd cooking produce from the garden. Get down and check it out from 11am to 3pm

Town Knitted Together by Poppy Tribute A work of art to commemorate Chesterfield servicepersons killed in World War One has been unveiled at the Crooked Spire. Chesterfield Parish Church has partnered with the Chesterfield branch of the Royal British Legion to commemorate the 1,574 soldiers who fell in the 1914 1918 conflict. To mark the centenary of the end of the war, local volunteers from across the community have knitted an individual poppy for each serviceperson from the town who gave their life. The 1,574 poppies have now been pieced together to create a magnificent handcrafted installation, hanging in the medieval church.

The cascade of flowers was formally blessed and opened by Revd Patrick Coleman, vicar of Chesterfield, on Saturday with Councillor Maureen Davenport, mayor of Chesterfield, in attendance. Speaking at the opening ceremony, Revd Patrick Coleman said: “This display is a important remembrance of the ultimate sacrifice made by over 1,500 people from this town- around one in seventy of the local population at the time. “It also gives us today the opportunity to pledge to redouble our resolve to pray and work for peace, so that this disastrous loss of life isn’t repeated. “I thank all the volunteers – aged from 18 months to over 90 years old – for creating this poignant piece of art.” The poppy installation can be viewed whenever the church is open. Opening times are from 9am to 4pm Monday to Saturday (closing is at 6pm on Thursdays), and for services at 10.30am and 6.30pm on Sundays.

eing in the garden on any sunny day in May has to be one of life’s best experiences; the sun has real warmth and all around plants are shooting up. But a cautionary note: it’s still possible for there to be overnight frosts, especially in slightly more exposed areas, so be cautious about putting out anything tender, or be prepared with some improvised shelter - it won’t need to be particularly robust as any frost will be light. The upside is that frost will only happen if the sky is clear, which makes for wonderful mornings…

1. As potato shoots appear do not forget to ‘earth up’ the growing shoots. This serves two purposes – young potato shoots do not like frosty weather, so cover over the shoots with soil for protection and it also helps to avoid young tubers from turning green with sunlight exposure. 2. Thin out raspberry shoots and prune gooseberries. As always, the idea with this sort of job is make an open framework with an even distribution of fruiting stems all getting a good supply of sunlight and air (often easier said than done). 3. Lots of more tender vegetables can be sown now: French and runner beans, courgette, cucumber, pumpkin and squash as well as cauliflower and purple sprouting broccoli for harvesting in winter - they like a long growing season. 4. Towards the end of the month, plant out summer bedding plants. These are available from garden centres, but are often displayed earlier than they are sensibly planted out, so, if tempted, keep them in a shady place (protected from frost) and well-watered until they can go into the open garden. 5. If you’ve already sown tomatoes and courgettes inside, they can now go outside. As upright (cordon) tomatoes grow, keep an eye open for any side-shoots that form in the angle between the main stem and branches and remove them. Towards the end of the month seeds for both can be sown directly into the ground. 6. Prune spring-flowering shrubs after they have finished flowering, and remove any growth damaged by frost from evergreen shrubs. Check variegated ones for any where the leaves have reverted to plain green and remove those shoots completely.

7. Sow peas outside now with pea sticks in place early, and prepare supports for any other plants (e.g. climbing French and runner beans) that will need them later. 8. Lawns will now need regular mowing (use the clippings as a mulch), and keep on top of the weeding. Hedges will need clipping, but check for birds nests first, and if you’ve been feeding the birds in the winter, don’t stop – current thinking is that you should do it all year. 9. It's that time of year when spring bulbs are now beyond their best, but as they fade the tidy gardener can't resist the temptation to 'tidy them'. Once the flowers have faded you can cut the head off the flower if you want to, don't cut back the leaves until they are completely yellow, and don't tie them up either, the leaves need to continue to produce chlorophyll (food), the leaf needs exposure to as much light as possible, the bulb needs the energy in the leaf to be reabsorbed into the bulb ready for next year. Once your leaves have completely withered your bulb is now dormant, so you can lift them if you need to thin them out, or move clumps that are too big to new areas, they don't generally need feeding they're very self-sufficient. 10. Keep sowing salad crops (radishes, spring onions, lettuce etc.) and herbs (parsley, coriander, basil etc.) for regular harvesting.
