Intro
Hi and welcome to the June edition. June brings with it Father's Day on the 17th and the Summer Solstice (longest day) on the 21st, and with May kicking us off with such a wonderful start to the summer let's hope it continues. Robert Nixon Betts provided this editions cover shot of a Tulip, a bit more summery than the industrial images we've had on the last two editions. Heather Shaw and her husband have been in touch to pass on their thanks to a family in Somersall Park who kindly came to their assistance recently. "When my husband's mobility scooter broke down on Somersall Park last week-end, a very kind family of four + friendly dog, Lola rescued us. They pushed husband and scooter all the way home, including up our very steep drive. We are so grateful. The scooter is now fixed so we hope to see them again on the park. In the meantime, please may we use your thank-you facility to pass on our thanks to such lovely people." If you have a community thank you to share please get in touch. This edition I've met some great new business owners and bumped in to one or two old ones. We're lucky to have so many dedicated people running their own independent businesses locally. It's important we support them where we can, and don't order everything online! If you do nothing else this month, please take a look at our advertisers, tradesmen, retailers, pubs and restaurants, choose one you've never used before and give them a call to cut your lawn, try their food or whatever it is you do and show your support. And if you'd like to help me - also mention S40 Local! Paul. t: 07764 801080 e: paul@s40local.co.uk

Florence Chettle Celebrating a century. Words: Jack Alexander Images: Ellie Rhodes Pictures

entury: It's a length of time we tend to think of when collating history, to stratify change and development. It is not however a term we often get to apply to the life of a human being, but to Mrs Florence Chettle it is wholly appropriate, for she has just celebrated her 100th birthday.
The card sitting on the chest of drawers in her Holmewood care home room proves it. It has the face of the Queen on it, and she is smiling like she's midway through patting a child on the head. Florence herself sits in an armchair, propped up with a big cushion and hands folded lightly in her lap. She's dressed like the perfect grandmother: blouse, cardigan and comfy slippers. Her daughter Helen is here too, and informs me neither her mother's eyes or ears are as good as they once were. Despite this, it is Florence's confident yet modest gaze that stays with me days after our meeting. It is the gaze of someone who has lived through more change, more recessions and celebrations, than almost anyone in Britain today. It is the gaze of living history. "So you want to know about me?" A rhetorical question, but more a statement. I've barely had time to sit before Florence has cast off the ballast of preamble and we embark upon a journey; the nostalgic recitation of her long life. "My mother died when I was three..." 1918 marked the end of the First World War. It was
"There was no welfare, no money anywhere, and no one had earned enough to save anything," also the year that Florence was born, in Nottingham. After the tragic loss of her mother in the early 20s, Florence's father moved the family, Florence and her two sisters, to be closer to their extended family. Her grandfather had a bread and confectionery firm in Nottingham, which already employed numerous members of the family. Florence's father joined the business, and bought a house opposite her grandfather's. "We were the first people to have a toilet and a bath indoors," Florence informs me. She recalled how nothing ever happened on a Friday night, because it was the designated 'bath night'. Indeed, thanks to the family business, Florence and her family enjoyed many of the benefits of early twentieth-century contemporary living. She remembered the first radio broadcasts, a record player with just the one record, 'My Friend Elizabeth', on repeat, and the significance of owning one of the first telephones. People came from far and wide to use it, but didn't like to do the talking themselves:
"They didn't like to hear the voice, but not see the face. As a youngster of course, I was fascinated." It was Florence's uncle who delivered for the bakery, first pulling along his cart by hand, then investing in a horse, before finally making the transition to owning an automobile, another first for the neighbourhood. Florence recalled many a clinched playground trade; promises of rides in exchange for sweets. The world may have breathed a collective sigh of relief after the Great War ended, but life for many was still far from easy. The 1926 General Strike saw almost 2 million blue collar workers nationwide protesting to prevent wage reductions and worsening conditions for coal miners. The country was in danger of grinding to a halt. Whilst government intervention ensured industry continued to tick over, it was down to the individual to keep their neighbours afloat. "There was no welfare, no money anywhere, and no one had earned enough to save anything," Florence recalls. Britons were dying of starvation. It was at this point that her grandfather stepped in, ensuring every house in the area had a loaf of bread waiting for them on the doorstep each morning. In a world where, personally, I can count on one hand how many neighbours with whom I am on a first-name basis, it seems an extraordinary act of empathy and community spirit. Florence's grandfather may not have left much behind when he died, but what he did impart was a real sense for the importance of people, alongside a straight-forward approach to community activism which Florence herself has embodied throughout her life. But let's not get ahead of ourselves. We mustn't forget how little respite there was before the political situation in mainland Europe once again reached boiling point. By 1939, Britain was at war with Germany, in response to its invasion of Poland. Florence's first job as a Personal Assistant nurtured a skill set which would allow her to be a great asset to the domestic war effort. "I had to do something during the War, else I'd have been called up," she explains. She refers of course to conscription. By 1942, with just a few exceptions, all British men and women of a certain age were drafted in and allocated roles. By sheer coincidence, an aunt of Florence's had as her lodger a Colonel of the Army Pay Corps, whose headquarters had moved to Nottingham. Now there was a man in need of a secretary. After just a few weeks in the position though, it was deemed Florence's skills were being wasted, and she was sent 'downstairs' to join the hundreds of others whose responsibility it was to administer all the army's financial matters. By the end of the war, Florence had attained the rank of Sergeant Major, the highest available to civilian personnel. It struck me that war meant more than soldiers.

People In fact, it is estimated that the Second World War directly involved over 100 million people worldwide. More than half of them never came home, lest we forget. Frank Chettle had spent most of his war years on the front line, predicting the weather as an RAF meteorologist. "I'd known him all my life, but we'd never really spoken," says Florence. "There was another boy at church I thought I would surely marry (I was very much in love with him, I thought) but he announced he was marrying someone else." Still, when you're invited to a wedding it's only proper to attend. Florence sat alone through the service, feeling quite uncomfortable no doubt. Enter the meteorologist. "Frank came and sat next to me, and I was so glad. Afterwards we walked home, it was quite a way." Later, Frank would tell Florence that it was during this walk that he fell in love with her, '...because you never stopped talking.' Before the year was out, they were married, but on one condition: "No children! You see, there were no men. I had no end of aunties, but all the men were killed during the war, so I'd had nothing to do with babies or children," Florence explained. Frank's response? 'Never mind that,' he said, 'It's you I want.' For the record, Florence is a mother of three, a grandmother of eight, and a great-grandmother of nine (and counting).
Striped tubular dress circa: 1918
"Gifts from God," she says. They moved to Norwich where Frank had a job opportunity, and where their first daughter Helen, who now sits opposite me providing her mother with the occasional prompt, was born. But they never truly fell in love with the place. "My next door neighbour taught me everything, but never came in the house, and never invited me in." So after a few years, when Frank got a phone call from his old school in Nottingham, offering him a teaching position in mathematics, the Chettle family jumped at the chance. They lived happily there, expanding their family by another two, and it was only after a decade or so that Frank's work uprooted them once more. Their destination? A certain town on the northern edge of Derbyshire with a peculiar crooked church spire, where he became headteacher of Tapton House School.
he fell in love with her, '... because you never stopped talking'
"We had some lovely years in Chesterfield," says Florence. In Holymoorside she turned her hand to architecture, and designed their new home from the ground up. The neighbours were duly impressed, and the same day as the removal van rolled up, Florence was offered the position of treasurer of the WI, which she held for twenty years. Page 6

People In 1965 the Chettles moved to Inkberrow, near Redditch. "It was a little village when we arrived. We helped transform it into a small town, almost," recalls Florence with modest pride. This included raising the money to build the village hall which stands there today. "We just wanted to make a difference." After long careers, the Chettles retired, and that was what brought them back to the Chesterfield area in 1979, to Walton, where they lived out their golden years together. Sadly, Frank died in 2010 after suffering with Alzheimer's Disease. In an act of what I now see as characteristic of Florence's positivity and resilience, it was her experiences in later years as Frank's carer that brings us to our current setting: Barnfield Care Home in Holmewood. She recently took a fall, and instead of activating her Careline alarm, decided to pick herself back up. "Every time Frank fell down I managed to get him up ... and I thought: I got Frank up plenty of times, I'll get myself up!"
An admirable effort, but one which led to a further slip and a broken leg. And now here she sits, well on the mend with Helen for company, surrounded by an amalgamation of Get Well Soon and Happy Birthday cards, with just the occasional visit from strangers with voice recorders and notebooks full of questions. "I've had quite a good life," Florence concludes, "I've had good neighbours." Florence has experienced a span of life which few of us can hope to match. Since her birth in 1918 the population of planet earth has almost quadrupled. There have been twenty-five Olympic Games, mankind has mapped the craters of the Moon and analysed the surface of Mars. But Florence was never one to spend much time in front of the television. I'd prepared for Florence a selection of key events from the 20th Century to see what they meant for someone who'd lived through them. We also played a fun wordassociation game. 'eBike Gum!' I get to grips with a bike with a battery! Words & Images: Paul Chapman
A
s a cyclist I've always been a bit dismissive of eBikes and although it's Bike Week in June I did question whether I could include this article under that guise!
However, after taking my first ride on an electrically assisted bike I can say that, without a doubt, that it is still a bicycle, and a pretty good one at that. The bike in question is an Orbea Gain D40 Road eBike, lent to me by Rob from Igloo Cycles on Chatsworth Road. I was in buying some parts for my daughter’s bike when the Orbea caught my eye. It looked like a road bike, but there was a strange larger hub in the rear wheel and an extra cable on the frame. Apart from that, there was very little to give away the battery and motor that powers the rear wheel - you can normally tell an eBike a mile away from the large battery, but not this. A few days later I called in on Rob again to pick up the bike - he’d kindly agreed to let me demo the Orbea. The bright orange colour scheme with black deep rim wheels and Shimano 2x8 speed components look sharp and contemporary - apart from Rob’s gaudy yellow demo saddle! I'm assured that new bikes come with a more discreet black saddle. I rushed home, donned my kit and off I went. I like to ride but I’m a social, casual rider. I very rarely get more than two hours in the saddle. The day before I collected the Orbea, I did a 16 mile loop along Harewood Road; around the moors at the top, and back down to Chesterfield via Old Brampton. I set off on the same route to enable a comparison. The first thing that struck me was how the bike surged along when spinning the
Page 22
cranks. I was climbing Harewood Road at a pace unknown to me … I was riding on the larger, outer chainring, normally reserved for the flat or downhill sections, in fact there was no need to change down to the smaller, easier chainring, for the entire ride! Harewood Road from the Bull’s Head in Holymoorside to the crossroad at the top had taken me 13 minutes 9 seconds. On the previous ride it was 20 minutes 9 seconds; a full 7 minutes quicker, and what’s more I was feeling ridiculously fresh legged! The bike has a single switch set into the top bar, near the handlebars. Hold it down and it lights up white to say: “I’m on”, then press it again to cycle through the available settings: •
Green (‘Eco’ – for more of a push)
•
Orange (Medium)
•
Red (‘Boost’ – for a definite feel of more power through the pedals)
Easy. You can link the bike to your smartphone to display all sorts of useful info about battery power, but I didn’t bother with this; getting by with the buttons’ change of colour which displays remaining power. The good news is the bike feels just like a normal bike; the only slightly strange feeling is a tendency to want to 'run on' for a moment as you slow for a junction or come to a stop. Nothing to worry about, and something you soon learn to accommodate. The motor only helps if the bike is doing less than 25 kmh (approx. 16mph), above this it ceases to assist. I was concerned about the additional weight of the drive system but you can’t really tell you’re pushing along the extra weight of the drive system. If you get out of
www.s40local.co.uk

Page 23
Reviewed the saddle for a sprint, the bike is eager to swing from side to side, the additional weight creating a noticeable pendulum effect. It’s nothing major, and after a couple of times you get used to it. The increase in pace is felt most notably when confronted with inclines. Back to the ride, once at the top there followed a quick section around quiet flat roads on the moors around Beeley. One thing worthy of note, it was quite windy and should your speed drop below 25kmp the Orbea assists negating the slowing affect of the wind. On the decent through Old Brampton, the 28mm large volume tyres on deep rims, coupled with the stiff aluminium frame, made for a much smoother, more confidence-inspiring ride in comparison with my road bike, and the cable-operated discs scrubbed off speed with ease. Generally, I felt much safer on this bike than my own, largely due to the way I wasn’t banging and crashing through every little imperfection in the road surface. Once back at home: a quick check of the ride times showed the 16-mile loop which took me 1 hour 5 minutes on my regular bike, and had taken just 54 minutes on the Ordea.
Conclusion: It’s not all about the times and speed with an eBike. These bikes are great for opening up cycling options to people of all abilities. An eBike could get you back into cycling if you've lost your fitness, through lack of time on the bike, due to older age or perhaps suffering from injury. They might also encourage you if you feel you're too unfit to start, or simply want to enjoy a ride that’s slightly easier on the legs. My calculations suggest a 17% reduction (or assistance) in effort, whichever way you want to look at it. If you commute a short distance an eBike would be ideal. They’re less effort, you could avoid the queues and it wouldn’t take long for the bike to pay for itself in saved fuel costs. Prices for Orbea eBikes start at £1,299 for the ladies Katu - E50, and £1,699 for the men's’ Keram 27 30 mountain bike, or the Gain F40 road bike. The bike I rode is priced at £1,799 from Igloo Cycles on Chatsworth Road, and can be set up with straight handlebars to make it more commuterfriendly. Personally, I’d go for the All Road version; just a single chainring with drop bars, and ready to take you off on your first gravel adventure. Don’t be fooled though, you still need to put in some effort, you don’t just twist a grip and off you go. I was so impressed that I thought about going back to Rob to get the charger, so I could take the Orbea on a longer route the following day! Page 24

New Business
The Crafty Dog
Introducing the latest addition to the Brampton Mile. Words: Paul Chapman Images: The Crafty Dog
“
Where have you been all my life?” said a man out walking his dog when he popped in to the Crafty Dog stopping off on his regular walk!
Previously the Red Lion on the corner of Chatsworth Road and Barker Lane, the premises have been full refurbished and in March opened the doors to offer customers a laid-back Craft beer pub with a choice of up to 30 real ales … yes 30! Plus a discerning selection of lagers, ciders, gins, wines and spirits, together with a food menu that should tempt anyone. A perfect spot for a crafty beer whilst out taking Rover for a stroll, in fact why not set a task to try all of the 30 beers… I'll leave that with you! The Crafty Dog is a partnership between Neil Turner and Andy Watterson, two local Chesterfield lads who are passionate about creating a community pub, where friends can ching a glass and build some fantastic memories. Unlike many pubs The Crafty Dog has no brewery ties, so Neil, Andy and the team can select beers from across the area and country. The pub has a contemporary feel, the interior stripped back to the bones and the right-hand wall displaying the 30 beers on blackboards, so you can check out strength and taste before making your choice. If you’re in the mood you can try a third of a pint, take three thirds so you can have a selection of tastes and find something that’s perfect for your palette. Jamie Rawson, who manages The Crafty Dog, after successfully launching a number of other venues in Derbyshire, says, "we're really excited about the offer we've put together and we've spent a good while working with the chefs on the new menu. We had to install a brand new cellar and a brand new kitchen as the venue didn't have one before. Even though this was quite an undertaking, we have a fantastic team behind us and we are ready to really push our amazing menu and showcase the talent of our passionate chefs". Talking of food, Neil is keen to point out that the menu has been built around what people want and is locally sourced where possible. They have a number of menus available, lunch includes starters at £5, mains £8 and puds at £6, these prices drop to £3, £6 and £4 if you take two minutes to join the Page 28
Crafty Club for free, more on this later. They offer a sharing menu, handmade nachos, kids choices, burgers, chicken wings, 12” stone baked pizza to eat in or takeaway (late afternoon and evenings in the week, but all day at the weekends), brushettas and sandwiches plus the usual tasty salads and sides. The menu is extensive, check it out on Facebook (@craftydoguk) for details… or even better make an excuse and call in for lunch or an evening meal! The team are keen to place the pub at the centre of the community for residents, for businesses and for local clubs and societies. “It’s important that we support the local businesses around us, we use Penk for insurance, our flowers are from JJ’s and Ideal Carpets supplied the carpets in the accommodation” says Neil. The building has eight bedrooms upstairs and these will shortly be available for people to stay at The Crafty Dog. “If you’ve got no room at home for family staying over” Neil suggests, “give us a call and get them booked in for us to look after them. The accommodation should be a popular addition, we have the Peak District ten minutes away and we’re looking forward to welcoming our first overnight guests in June.” I mentioned the Crafty Club, this is the Crafty Dog's loyalty card, it’s completely free and offers reduced prices on the lunch menu, plus as you use the card it racks up rewards to be used in the pub. It also enables members to book a table, something not available for non-members and will enable The Crafty Dog to keep you directly posted of offers and rewards. The Crafty Dog is dog friendly, they have a Monday Quiz Night (coming soon), a Burger Night on Tuesdays and the beer garden is a welcome sun trap. And if you fancy trying some food, call to book a table (01246 206130) and quote S40 Local for 25% off the main menu all day Monday to Thursday! Chatsworth Road Business Park Words: Paul Chapman 172 Chatsworth Road is Chatsworth Road Business Park. This old electricity board site is home to a small group of businesses, four of them advertisers with S40 Local. If you've never visited, here's a brief introduction.
Noble Motor Servicing Noble Motor Servicing is a family business, Peter Dibble, wife Pippa and son George all work at the Business Park site. “Noble is two businesses in one” explains Peter, “we service and maintain all cars, from A to Z; Austin to an Aston Martin Zagato, from any country, any size, from a smart car to a 3.5 tonne van, and we look after numerous motor homes. We provide everything from servicing, tyres, cambelts, brakes, MOTs etc. We also have the knowledge and experience to look after sports and performance cars, having our own rolling road.” Their prices are competitive – an annual service and MOT for a small car with low mileage will be circa £99 plus vat and includes a free Mini Valet inside and out. They can collect and return your car and they have a courtesy car available when pre-booked. “We can look after your new vehicle as well” adds Peter, “Even when still under manufacturer's warranty you can come to us, when servicing with genuine parts your warranty is unaffected ... and it will be cheaper than at your main dealer.” The team is important at Noble, Mike, the service manager has been with them for 31 years after starting in 1987, this speaks volumes about how they treat the staff and shows the vast experience on hand … he’s just one member of a great team! If you’re in need of servicing or maintenance, give them a call, they can normally get you booked in within three days and most repairs are completed same day. www.noblemotorservices.co.uk

Brampton Brewery Resurrecting the name Brampton Brewery has been a huge success. You can try their beers in one of their two pubs; The Rose & Crown and The Tramway Tavern, can find them appearing as guest ales and bottled across the county, you can buy their beers as out-sales from The Beer Cellar on the Business Park plus they offer full outside bar services. The relauch of Brampton Brewery as a micro-brewery was the realization of life-long dreams for many of those involved. Although, to be clear: there was nothing at all ‘micro’ about the original Brampton Brewery Company which ran for 130 years, with a bottling plant, 142 public houses, 10 shops and 142 worker’s cottages to its credit. After an absence of more than 50 years Brampton Brewery was re-born in the winter of 2007. Today, the brewery is run by a small team of local ale enthusiasts, led by head-brewer Chris Radford. The brewery logo gives an appreciative nod to the hundreds of thirsty workers at the 'Wasp Nest Brick Company' in Brampton whose 'engines' were refuelled on a daily basis by the original Brewery. Today this award-winning Micro-brewery is home to a single Mash Tun, four fermenting vessels and produces up to 10,000 pints every week and the pubs together with the brewery create employment for a growing number of local peolple. Brampton Brewery will continue to build on the legacy of its forebears in an innovative, precious fashion. And whilst many of the titles are new, a few old favourites remain. Why not drop into the Beer Cellar, just 200 yards from where it all started. www.bramptonbrewery.co.uk

A marriage of two businesses Springmount Dental & Aesthetics Words: Paul Chapman Images: Sam Reed

usband and wife team Katie and Malcolm Campbell's new Dental and Facial Aesthetics business, Springmount Dental and Aesthetics (SD&A) in Matlock is stunning from the moment you pull up outside. More reminiscent of a boutique hotel than a dental practice or a clinical cosmetics business. “We want to make the experience special for the people who come here” says Katie, “to feel like you are here to be pampered, as though you're visiting a spa. We want people to enjoy the process or treatment you’re here to see us for.” The business brings together the full range of dental services, from general & family dental care to cosmetic dentistry, with a range of facial
Page 36
aesthetics services such as dermal fillers, antiwrinkle injections, medical grade facials, micro needling and much more, all under the same roof. “We both trained locally in Sheffield” explains Katie. “I’m a dental therapist and Malcolm is a dentist. We met when working in Chesterfield and worked together for a year or so before Malcolm moved to work in the maxillofacial departments at York and Bradford Hospitals”. Malcolm explained, “It was my long-term plan to gain surgical experience, then bring these skills back into practice. I received exposure to treating facial skin cancers, mouth cancer, treatment of facial injuries as well as complex dental surgery. You require a knowledge of the anatomy of the face to fully understand the relationship between aesthetics
www.s40local.co.uk
and function, it’s so important in this type of work. It was great to get that exposure and it’s placed us well to bring the two areas of facial aesthetics and dentistry together.” “Malcolm and I are passionate about being able to offer the best in modern dentistry and facial aesthetics for our patients and clients” explains Katie. “We have both invested lots of time to further our skills to be able to offer dental implants, whitening, adult teeth straightening and facial aesthetics with tried and tested techniques and systems, like Invisalign and Enlighten”. Their search for a location for the new business came together when they purchased an operating dental practice in Matlock last December. "The practice already had a client base and it was a building on which we thought we could make our mark". The pricing structure is comparable with other practices, but the environment and ambience provide a more luxurious experience. Staff from the previous business have transferred across to SD&A and are very positive about the changes, plus offer the continuation of staff for the existing patient base. The pair clearly have a flair for design and an eye for detail, the surgeries have TV screens on the ceiling, and noise cancelling headphones to help you drift away as you have your treatment. There are state of the art screens to display your x-rays, relaxing music is piped through the entire building,
the waiting area is comfortable and comes with a great view over Matlock, plus good coffee! Katie and Malcom have thought about every detail, “we've set up the practice to reflect the experience we'd like if we came for treatment” says Katie “we wanted to detach ourselves from the traditional stigma of a clinical cold environment and offer something new.” The couple had been keen to offer cosmetic treatment and these premises allows the two businesses to co-exist perfectly. It’s a unique offering and one that differentiates them from other businesses, a beautiful and calming place in which to help their clients and patients relax. SD&A are just 15 minutes away, on the right-hand side as you drive down Bank Road into Matlock, you can park just outside, or just down the hill in Matlock. Give them a call to discuss treatment or check out their website, Katie and Malcolm are sure that once you’ve stepped through the door you’ll want to return. Pub. Garden. Food. The Bulls Head, Holymoorside. Words: Paul Chapman
M
ark Aisthorpe is a Michelin star chef and this month celebrates two years as owner and head chef at The Bull's Head, Holymoorside. Prior to his tenancy The Bull had been through a bit of an uncertain time with various landlords coming and going in quick succession - the village pub, that should be at the centre of the community, was often closed! “We’ve worked hard to get the pub established again and build loyal support from the community” says Mark. “As head chef, I’m in the kitchen every night, I don’t think of myself as landlord, so I think it puts a different emphasis on the offer we make. I love fine food, I dine out at least once a week to see what others are doing, and to see how we’re doing in comparison to similar pubs and restaurants around the Peak District and local area. Food is important to me and I feel we offer something great, from the day time basic pub and bar meals to the evening menu, where we offer traditional choices, with a twist.” Before settling in Chesterfield, Mark spent his time working in London restaurants, the Michelin star is something he doesn’t boast about, but it shows in his food. The Bull's Head isn’t all about food though, it’s also a great place to call in for a drink. The recently refurbished beer garden has been spruced up with a grass floor, ok so it’s artificial, tables refinished and some great looking bespoke outside bar tables using beam timbers from the old cotton mill buildings, a piece of local history reused to great effect. “It’s a pleasant sun trap” says Mark, “perfect to catch up with friends or perhaps a quick drink whilst the kids enjoy the park next door.” The Bulls Head are also happy to cater for a wedding, party or other celebration, they can accommodate parties of up to 100 people and provide all services needed to ensure you have a fantastic event. They also put on a number of events throughout the year, psychic medium, Eileen Proctor will be there on 11th June, “this edition will be close but there may be tickets left so please call if you fancy a great night's entertainment” adds Mark. Keep an eye on the website and Facebook (thebullsheadchesterfield) page for details of up and coming events.
liver, beer battered fish & chips, piri piri chicken burger, thai style fish cakes & stir fry veg ettc, in addition there are light bites, salads, burgers, sandwiches, snacks and deserts. Lunchtime they offer two mains for £12 so always a good option if you fancy a great value meal - they have a decent children’s menu or can do half portions on many of the main courses from the evening menu. Talking of the evening menu, it’s here where things get interesting. The specials board as I was talking to Mark featured Deconstructed Beef Wellington, “this sold out yesterday” says Mark, “it was a costlier main at £26 but demand showed that people really do want quality food. This gives us confidence to offer some great tasting dishes. It’s great to be able to offer time tested pub basics together with fine dining, it feels like we have two restaurants in one.” Check out the advert opposite, twists on classic deserts, a pineapple upside down cake, lemon meringue pie, apple pie - cooked slowly and coated in pastry, so soft you just scoop it out. They use local produce where they can, wild garlic coming from around the corner recently, and Mark has just started to grow his own salads and herbs etc “this is brand new so we need to get things a bit more established, but it’ll be exciting to see fresh produce right outside the kitchen door” adds Mark. I didn’t try the food whilst I was there but if appearances are anything to go by it looks fabulous. The Bull's Head is a long-term investment for Mark and it’s exciting to hear his ideas, he clearly cares about what he does and is looking forward to many more years in Holymoorside. With the pub so close it's a short summer walk away, a bus ride or taxi wouldn't cost a fortune so why not let someone else drive and give them a try? It's Father’s Day on 17 June so why not make that your excuse! The Bull's Head New Road, Holymoorside S41 7EW www.bullsheadholymoorside.co.uk

All Stars Cricket New to Chesterfield
Words: Mark Loveland (Coach)
A
ll Stars Cricket is a new softball sport for 5 to 8 year olds. It began last year and in 2018 has already signed up over 30,000 children nationally. Girls and boys having fun in the sun - but at ÂŁ40 to ÂŁ45 for eight weeks, how will it compete with the console or the tablet, never mind football or all the other activities available to tempt kids' attention? The idea has developed from MILO cricket, a big hit in sports-mad Australia. The kids get their own back-pack with bat and ball - not just for the weekly sessions. There are videos on games to try at home in the garden, and grown-ups are encouraged to spend an hour a week just playing with their All Star. There are stickers and tips from England players, and chances to meet pro's at local and national games. Last year All Stars were seen with ex-England captain, Michael Vaughan, even at Cricket HQ, Lord's. The sessions are described as 'organised chaos', with running, throwing, catching, hitting in fact, nine of the ten core movement skills. The England and Wales Cricket Board have spent millions subsidising caps and water bottles, and tops with each All Stars' name in friendly writing. There are competitions and discounts and mini-games suitable for shy beginners or budding Bradmans. But there is something else in cricket - the spirit of the game. It is the first part of the rules, a commitment to fairness and respect. Not a bad sporting philosophy to try. There are three clubs offering the programme within 5 miles of S40 readers. Advertorial
Not so long ago, Jo was walking Dilly, her white Staffy, and bumped into the grandma of a previous student named Harry. Grandma Mary was so pleased to be able to tell Jo how well Harry was doing at school but her biggest pride was that Harry was like a different person now. (He is now nearly two years older). Initially he hadn’t been so keen to go to Kip and Mary had agreed to fund the initial 10 sessions with Jo after his assessment. There wasn’t anything fundamentally wrong for Harry but when Jo first met him he had ceased trying in his Maths lessons as he had accepted that he was ‘rubbish at Maths’. Mary told Jo, that from working with her, he realised that getting something wrong, was in fact not a problem but totally ok; it ceased to be a drama! He found that when he got something wrong there were ways of back tracking and looking at it differently to see the right answer. Mary was so proud of Harry. She said it was amazing but his whole attitude had completely changed, in class, at home and most importantly how he saw himself. No longer ‘rubbish at anything’ he tried new things in order to begin the process of learning them. At the last parents evening his teacher commented that Harry was first with his hand up in class to proffer an answer, and didn’t mind at all if he was wrong. She also commented that, from being on the lower table for Maths, he was now in top set and on course for good SATs and exam results in future.
something. It becomes a rock to hide behind; they get less hassle and are not forced to keep trying. They get drawn into a downward vision of their ability. Usually it is more about their self-belief than actual ability, as had been the case with Harry. The system today judges children on ability in academic subjects, Maths and English for example and they are categorised both by their peers and by themselves. Unlike sport for example, where it is ok to not be so good at say, football. The child may not make the school team but it doesn’t stigmatise them in any way. Many parents with their own ‘Harry’ situation come to Jo for an assessment and ask ‘how long will he/she need to keep coming to Kip?’ In Harry’s case it was as little as 10 weeks and that made it very affordable. Jo has had some students for as little as 4 weeks, when one boy couldn’t ‘get’ fractions it was all he needed. Other children can be 2-3 years behind at assessment and so need longer, but on average Jo sees a 2 year improvement within 6 months for some children. Others go then come back years later for support with SATs or GCSEs. Everyone is different which is why everyone has an individual programme. So if your child feels ‘rubbish’ at something, let Jo work her magic and help them change their self-belief and confidence for years.
Let your child experience the Kip effect by calling Jo on 01629 56611 or 01246 220224 for a free assessment.
Lovely for Jo to hear about Harry’s success, but as many parents of primary aged children know, children are very, very quick to self-identify as ‘rubbish’ or ‘no good at’

hris Radford (right) and Robin Sibley (left) undertake the Big Battlefield Bike Ride in June. Now in its tenth year, the Big Battlefield Bike Ride raises money to support wounded Servicemen and women. The riders travel 310 miles through historic battlefields and, this year, will commemorate 100 years since the end of the Great War. Chris and Robin want to do their bit for Help For Heroes, but for Chris it also recognises the sacrifces made by so many. So for the second time this month, purely for editorial purposes of course, I got on my bike to ride out with Chris and Robin to understand a little about why they are doing it. The ride takes place over four days, travelling through France to Belgium. Starting from the Glade of the Armistice towards Saint-Quentin the ride passes through the battlefields of the Somme to Amiens, to Arras through the heartland of Thiepval, across the Vimy Ridge and Neuve Chappelle to Lille before crossing the border to Mons with a ceremony at Saint Symphorien Military Cemetery. Chris did the ride last year and whilst at a children’s party was retelling the highlights to Robin, which sparked Robin's interest. “We started in Northern Belgium and followed the route taken by the troops as part of Operation Market Garden, ending up in Arnhem. It was fairly flat but apart from the cycling, what struck me more than anything was the emotional side of the ride” explained Chris. “Many of the beneficiaries of Help For Heroes take part in the ride, servicemen and women who have lost limbs, who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, the effort and determination they put in is unbelievable. The final day saw us arrive at one of the drop zones, a field for a commemorative ceremony, it brought everything into focus, the enormity of what took place in those fields.” “I’d never cycled more than 15 miles” added Robin. “Just around the area and Peak District, I didn’t even own a road bike. Chris asked me to accompany him on this year’s ride but I declined as I was concerned about the amount of money I needed to raise.” Chris came back to Robin with a whole host of ways in which they could raise the necessary funds, the target is £2750 for each rider going to Help For Heroes. “Family and friends have stepped up to help and the way the public supported us was fantastic. You may have seen us raising money, riding our bikes on rollers in Debenhams.” says Robin. “People giving us £5 to donate to the cause, some commenting that it’s a shame we need to do it, but happy to donate.” The pair both have their passes stamped and leave the UK on 10 June and ride the following week starting Monday morning and ending at Compiègne, the site where the Armistice was signed at 11am on 11 November 1918. of Wight. They're currently looking for a project to support this year - Paul explained "We'd love to offer the CSR project to a local, expanding business. A business that wouldn't usually be able to afford management consultancy. We have an application form online so if you know of a business that would benefit please apply" -

Local father and son team Paul and Joe Crabtree will be walking 177 miles along Offa's Dyke trail this July to raise money for Ashgate Hospicecare. “I’d planned to do the walk a couple of times in my youth” says Paul, “but each time events conspired against me and I never quite made it. However, when I asked Joe if there was anything he wanted to do after finishing his GCSEs, to my surprise he asked if I fancied doing the walk of Offa’s Dyke with him.”
The fundraising target for the walk was originally set at a modest £500, but as they exceeded this they increased it to their present target of £1,000. They would obviously love to smash this target too! If you'd like to encourage them and support Ashgate Hospicecare, you can donate at justgiving.com/fundraising/paulandjoewalkwales
“Joe had volunteered at the Ashgate Hospicecare shops as part of the Duke of Edinburgh scheme, so we decided to combine our love of the outdoors with fundraising for the Hospice.” The pair have meticulously planned their route, the toughest day being 22 miles. Their accommodation is all planned, a mix of B&Bs, camp sites, the odd wild camp and a night in a luxury hotel, where they’ll meet the rest of the family. It seems strange to imagine, but over the last three days of the walk there’s nowhere to buy any food, so they’ll need to be self-sufficient. Offa’s Dyke Path is a 177 mile (285 Km) long walking trail, named after Dyke King Offa who ordered its construction in the 8th century, to divide his Kingdom of Mercia from rival kingdoms in what is now Wales. The trail opened in 1971 and links Sedbury Cliffs near Chepstow with the coastal town of Prestatyn. Along its length it passes through eight different counties and crosses the border between England and Wales over 20 times. In addition to the issue of 177 miles to cope with there is about 28,000ft of accent as it rises and falls along its length … almost the same as the height of Everest!

Ringing Remembers in Chesterfield and across Derbyshire
In the First World War, 1,400 bell ringers lost their lives. Local losses include: • Private Tom Billingham age 23 from Beighton • Serjeant Frank Teece Humphries age 21 from Eckington • Lance Corporal Percy Henry Sault age 24 from Chesterfield • Private John Thomas Taylor age unknown from Dore • Private Frederick Travis age 39 from Darley Dale • Private Arthur Whelpton age 27 from Beighton Ringing Remembers is a nationwide campaign to recruit 1,400 new bell ringers in their honour to ring in November 2018 for the centenary of the Armistice. Bell towers in Chesterfield and across Derbyshire are recruiting now. Although bell towers are typically in churches, you don't have to go to church. Bell ringing is an inclusive community with people of all faiths and none, and you don't need to be musical or strong. It is a family-friendly, social activity that is good for you and your local community: • All ages (10+), teens and adults. Children and parents/carers can learn together. • Great all-year round exercise for the mind and body. • Builds teamwork and leadership skills as part of a friendly team. • Opportunities to visit new places and try new things. Recent recruits have said: “It forces me to go out, exercise my mind and my body and there’s something about being part of a group of people that have a focus and it’s very satisfying to be a part of that. It’s not that hard to learn – the more you practise the easier it gets, but personally I find it very enjoyable and I look forward to coming to practice.” - an adult bell ringer. “Bell ringing has helped me with my shyness – I’ve had to conduct and shout at people I don’t know so it’s taught me to speak up a bit. It’s helped me build my teamwork skills too when I’m doing complicated patterns. I want to try and carry it on because it’s a fun thing to do. People are nice and everyone is involved with what’s going on." - a teenage bell ringer. Would you like to come along and play a part in it? Garden Tips
June Garden Tips Words: Transition Chesterfeld Picture: Robert Nixon Betts
This is the busy season in the garden, but, as always, the thing to remember is that it should be relaxing and fun, so don't overdo it or try to stick to some fixed timetable about when things should be done. The changing weather has to be considered. 1. Weeds are usually successful because they grow and set seed quickly, so remove them before they flower. Various types of hoe can prove to be the best solution at this time of year. An ‘onion hoe’ is often considered to be one of the most versatile tools if used regularly to cut off the young weeds before established. 2. If you have fruit, you can improve the size of individual fruits by thinning out the buds. Now is the perfect time to train the stems of blackberries and other hybrid berries on a frame or wires and pruning your current bushes to help get maximum yields by stopping plants being overcrowded. 3.Summer bedding plants can be planted out now; soak them very thoroughly beforehand and, if the soil is dry, pour water into the planting hole and let it drain away before putting the plants in, although you should still water them in well – this helps the soil settle. 4. Greenhouses heat up very fast in even hazy sunshine, so they will require the maximum ventilation possible and you may wish to consider some form of shading from now onwards. 5. Creating a regular regime of watering, particularly for tomatoes and peppers, will prevent problems like blossom end rot. Make sure that plants receive adequate watering from this time of year and remember to
Page 60
www.s40local.co.uk
be consistent. This is particularly important for container grown plants and growbags. 6. All danger of frost should have passed, so any tender plants that have been germinated indoors or under cover can be planted out. Lots of vegetable seeds can be sown directly into the ground now e.g. beetroot, carrots, courgettes, cucumbers, peas, pumpkins and radishes. 7. Stake plants that have a tendency to flop over, especially those with big flower heads. Ideally, the stakes should be about 20cm (8”) shorter than the eventual height of the plant, so they’re completely hidden when the plants start to flower. 8. Pinching out the growing tips of broad beans will reduce possible attack by blackfly and it will promote setting rather than excess plant growth. This technique can also be used on many other herb plants and flowers like fuchsias, a few weeks after doing this your plants are bushier and more compact. 9. Keep earthing up potato plants and if you are growing them in pots or containers remember to continue to add more compost or soil. Harvesting some early potatoes can usually start after 10-12 weeks of growth. Boiling your first new potatoes of the season reminds you why you bother to grow your own vegetables! 10. Why not try to grow herbs that have the added advantage of being friendly to butterflies? Hyssop, lavender, marjoram and thyme all provide good nectar for these pollinators and will inspire you in the kitchen too! Please feel free to pop in to see us at the ‘Inspire Community Garden’ at the bottom of the public car park on Ashgate Road, Chesterfield (S40 4AA). See our website for opening times and the programme of FREE WORKSHOPS running on Sundays throughout the summer. inspirecommunitygarden.org.uk
