Hi everyone and welcome to the July edition.

When I received this month’s copy back from my proof reader she’d written on the cover… 'I really enjoyed reading this month's. Lots of interesting positive stuff 10/10!!' Thank you Louise - I hope you feel the same way after taking a read. 'As far as I‘m concerned S40 is the best invention since sliced bread!

'S40 is the first thing I look for in the post when visiting Chesterfield. It is an excellent balance of interesting articles and advertising. Particularly the ‘regular events’ section which helps me to organise my time whilst I’m in the town. I am off to the flea market and farmers market today and looking forward to the open day at Derby university, my old school, St Helena, on Saturday - all thanks to info found in S40. A friend of mine has moved recently from Somersall to Hasland, and she is missing S40, so I am passing the magazine on to her in foreign territory!' Too much self-praise? Sorry – I’ll stop there!

I've met some inspiring people over the past few weeks, all eager to succeed and offer something unique to ensure Chesterfield's place on the map.

I’ve also received some great contributions from people, some as young as ten years old. Thanks to Sophie Marples for the photos of Stephenson Place.

BBC Radio 2 500 Words Competition Final: My Experience Words & Images: Evie Fawcett-Greaves

fter hearing about the 500 words competition at school, I was so excited to enter with my story ‘Her Surreal Dream’. Although my story didn’t make the final, I was lucky enough to be invited to the final of the competition. On the day, me and my mum woke up at about 4:50 in the morning and got ready. We drove from the hotel to Hampton Court Palace and were directed to the correct car park by the very helpful BBC radio 2 staff. Then we parked up and walked over to the path at the side of the palace (next to the river Thames).

At the entrance we received our security wristbands and were shown through the gate. The security team checked our bags, they then allowed us to take our seats. A jester entertained the audience while Chris Evans was getting ready. Chris Evans came on stage with his radio team. He told three jokes which were really funny. My favourite was ‘What bees produce the best milk?’…’Boobies’

but the most famous celeb there was David Walliams. My favourite story was ‘The Poo Fairy’, it was hilarious, and the message was about friendship. The Duchess of Cornwall arrived in the one and only Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and gave a brilliant speech.

After the show had finished the winners had a ride in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang to the Queen's Royal Barge. Me and my Mum walked to the River Thames to see the boat. I was incredibly lucky as I was able to see Chitty Chitty Bang Bang up close. While I was having my picture taken next to Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Chris Evans, The Duchess of Cornwall and David Walliams returned to the car and I was in touching distance of them. The Duchess of Cornwall waved to me and said hello. I was so amazed. It was such an amazing experience which I will never forget. I can’t wait to enter the competition next year and fully encourage any child from age 5 to 14 to enter.

We then did a quick run through of what would happen on the show and Chris told us when we had to cheer and shout ‘ooooooo’. The show started at 7am. Chris was very funny throughout his show and kept linking back to the studio for the news and travel to be read. Live music was sung by John Newman, Bastille and Alexandra Burke, who were all amazing (but John Newman was my favourite). The winners' stories were all read out by celebrities such as Dara O’Briain, Jim Broadbent and Jason Isaacs Page 4

Her Surreal Dream By Evie Fawcett-Greaves ‘Am I asleep, or am I dreaming?’ Was the helpless question that rang aloud in her head. The clothes she was wearing were old and worn. Why was she so tiny? This place seemed so familiar, but it was stuck in the back of her mind. She could not think. Suddenly, she saw a ghostly figure in the distance. Its silhouette lurked its way towards her. Strangely, she was not scared. Billie felt she had seen this figure before and felt compelled to walk towards it. The fog suddenly parted, she could see clearly now. The figure became visible. It was her grandfather. Billie stopped dead in her tracks. Billie was confused, it was 1996 and her grandfather had died during World War Two. He was instantly recognisable even though she had only ever seen him in photographs. Billie’s grandfather was a very tall man and was wearing his army uniform. He looked exactly like the man Billie had seen in the pictures. They hesitated for a moment, then Billie’s grandfather ran towards her shouting “Billie! You’re back!” Suddenly, she remembered. Billie used to visit him in her dreams. They hugged tightly and wept with joy. “The village needs you!” her grandfather whispered. “What village?” She replied. “Come on” he said, “there’s not much time”, he took Billie's hand and led her towards the village in the distance. The village was full of cottages and old shops. There was an old bomb that had landed right in the centre of the market. People were panicking and suddenly Billie shouted aloud “Don’t panic, I’ve got an idea”. Billie was surprised, where was this voice coming from? Did she really know what to do? Billie grabbed her grandfather’s hand and led him towards the old derelict shed at the edge of the village. She frantically searched inside the shed, not knowing what she was looking for. Then she saw it, a bright glint in the corner of her eye. It was a beautiful golden chest. Billie moved towards it and gently opened the chest. Inside was a note, it read “Use your magic”. Beside it was a magical globe and Billie knew what to do. Billie raced back to the market with the globe in her hands. She closed her eyes and said three times “I wish to banish this bomb”. The bomb disappeared into thin air, saving the village and all its people. Billie hugged her grandfather one last time and vowed to come back to see him again. Suddenly, she woke. What a surreal dream! Was it truly real?

Sparkles, cinema and running shoes Not the three items I'd take to a desert island but three events Ashgate Hospicecare have planned. Words: Paul Chapman Images: Ashgate Hospicecare

shgate Hospicecare has earned a place in many people's hearts, for the care and support they've given patients and their families during their last days of life. A time when dignity and respect is so important, reflected in everything they do at the Hospice. The Hospice turns 30 this year. They’ve come a long way since the early days, but the emphasis placed on patient care in 1988 was the same then as it is now.

A mere 28% of the hospice funds come from government, the remaining 72% is secured via fundraising activities, the charity shops and a high percentage comes from legacies left in patient's wills.

To meet the target, Ashgate have a series of fundraising events scheduled throughout the year and it’s through these that a slice of the funding is achieved. Amy Buxton, from the Communications Team at Ashgate Hospicecare, and was keen to talk me through the events happening through to the end of the year. “The Markovitz Ltd Sparkle Night Walk on 7 July will see almost 3,000 people taking part in the 10km night walk, dressed in pink. Last year, Sparkle walkers raised an incredible £232,185 and this year we hope to raise even more through sponsorship, entry and donations” says Amy. “Many walkers enter as local businesses or groups of friends coming together for a good cause. The atmosphere is fantastic as the walkers light up the way through the night, kicking off with a warm up party at the Proact stadium at 10pm.” Page 20

Friday 10 and Saturday 11 August will give cinema-goers a chance to enjoy an outdoor film, at the Open Air Cinema on the meadow at Ashgate Hospicecare. Doors open at 7:30pm for films at 9pm… don’t forget your camping chair or picnic blanket! This year there will be two films, The Greatest Showman on Saturday night and Bridget Jones’s Baby on Friday. As a fund-raising event there is a ‘suggested donation’ of £10. The Summer Fair will also take place on Saturday 11 August, again on the meadow, between 11am and 4pm. A great family day out with rides, stalls, food, bar, live music and much more. Entry is just £2 and under 16s go free.

The Redbrick Chesterfield Half Marathon on 21 October is a great way to raise funds, and if you raise more than £100 in sponsorship Ashgate Hospicecare will refund your entry fees. Community nurses who now work 7 days a week and supported by an advice line for help and assistance and to cover the weekends. This is all aimed at avoiding people having to be moved into hospital, to instead be supported in their own homes.

30 for 30: Volunteering at Ashgate Hospicecare “We launched ‘30 for 30’ this year to get more people volunteering for the Hospice” says Amy. "We’d like people to donate 30 hours of their time in 2018 for Ashgate’s 30th anniversary. A number of people have volunteered their services already but there's still half the year left and it would be great to get more people involved.”

Whatever your skills, you will be able to find a volunteering role for you at Ashgate. “Whether it’s fundraising, gardening, clerical work, public speaking – we need people to go out and raise awareness of what we do. Or maybe marshalling at events is more your thing” explains Amy. “Retail experience, reception, driving, you name it, it all helps!”

If you would like to volunteer please give them a call. They are keen to hear from you and welcome younger volunteers; school students, college students etc. It’s a great way to gain valuable experience to support applications for university or job searching, whilst also giving something back to the community. Right now they are developing a dementia courtyard, a sensory space with plants at different heights so wheelchair users can experience the plants… most of which are edible! They will be needing more volunteers to help maintain this and people to help with the Horticultural Project; giving patients the opportunity to grow their own plants.

A Very Brief History Ashgate Hospicecare opened on 10 October 1988 following a huge fund raising cycle by Dr Dick Atkinson, it was staffed by Mary O’Dowd their first matron. On Sunday 7 October this year they’ll be holding a service to celebrate.

Hospice services The day hospice was added in 2005 and enables patients to benefit from treatment for one day a week, including all medical care, social time, activities, complementary therapies etc. They also provide ‘Hospice at Home’ a service that provides specialist nurses, support workers and a full set of services in the patients home.

A recent addition to Ashgate Hospicecare is the café, situated in a newly refurbished building, the Harry Fisher Building, which was completed in January 2017. The café is open to all and is a great place to stop off after having a browse around the shop in reception.

The building was named after a generous legacy left to the hospice by Harry Fisher in his will. The money enabled the hospice to cover much of the cost of the work needed, with a large grant from the Wolfson Foundation, enabling the new space to open.

Other ways to support It takes an army of people to deliver the fantastic services at Ashgate Hospicecare, 1000 people are involved at Ashgate Hospicecare, around 300 full time staff and 700 volunteers.

If you’d like to know more about volunteering at the hospice please get in touch, it could be something as small as a few hours a week, to helping out in the shops or you could undertake a 177 mile walk like Paul & Joe mentioned in the last edition! Alongside the patient specific work, the Hospice provide supportive care to those going through the bereavement process, trained counsellors, art thearapist etc, Chaplains providing spiritual and emotional support, and these services are available to both adults and children. The Hospice provide over 2,500 visits to people in the home each year, through the

Fresh Ideas Team Story “Absolutely anybody can do it – no excuses!”

Ebony and Sam, from Fresh Ideas on Chatsworth Road, explained why they are walking the Markovitz Sparkle Night Walk.

E: We’ve been walking the Sparkle Night Walk for four years. I started to walk it for my grandad and then I spoke to Sam to see if she wanted to walk it as a team. At the shop, we always have a donation bucket out for Ashgate as that’s the charity we choose to support. If a customer has any change or gives us a tip it all goes in the bucket, it adds up. S: We appreciate the work of the Hospice and that’s why we started doing the walk. Almost everyone you speak to has a connection to Ashgate. Two of my best friends have died over the past few years and they were both cared for by Ashgate. One of them went into the Hospice and then came out and was supported at home, so she got to die where she wanted. Since then we’ve fundraised quite a lot. The Sparkle Night Walk is really good and the mood is always very up beat, especially near the main stage when everybody’s lining up and they’re all jolly and eager to get going. We always try and get near the main stage.

We’re really excited about Jake Quickenden this year so we’re going to get right to the front to see him! People here have got a lot of time for Jake because he’s had to go through having cancer in his family and losing his brother and his dad. I think it’ll make even more people sign up. We hope he talks about it at the event too because cancer is still such a taboo subject - the ‘C’ word – and people are still afraid to talk about it. E: Everyone’s there for the same reason and it brings us all together.

S: I think Jake’s going to be shocked by the size of the event and the whole atmosphere!

E: It’s quite a sight to see all the flashing ears walking down the bypass! The whole town gets excited and there are even people on the street waving at you as you walk. Everybody wants to be a part of it. You’re part of a team and you have a giggle as you go along. S: Random folk you don’t know come up and chat to you, it’s really nice. When you’re all finished and you go to get your food and your cup of tea or hot chocolate, everyone stands around chatting to each other and people ask you why you’re doing it.

We go all out – I wore bright pink trousers, a pink wig and had glitter all over my face! Nobody cares what you look like though because everyone knows you’re raising money for a really good cause and it helps if people know you’re going to dress up crazy to raise the sponsorship money.

I think more people should do it. My sister’s got a brain injury and she has done the walk. Last year we pushed her in her wheelchair and then, when we got near the end, she got out and walked over the finish line, so absolutely anybody can do it – no excuses! E: I’d say, whether you’re a business or a group of friends, just sign up! Or, if you didn’t want to walk 10k, you could all sign up to be volunteers or marshalls and then you can still wear your pink wigs, ra-ra skirts and glitter – that goes for the men and women! S: It would be great to see other businesses getting involved, all you need to do is get a team together and sign up. Do it for the Hospice, and do it as a team. It’s about team effort.

hatsworth Road sees a high turnaround of business, but Penk Insurance are, this year, celebrating 30 years in business and with them becoming one of the last remaining high street brokers they look set to be there for many more.

Penk is a family run business, owned by David and Jenny Penk. David started working in insurance services after leaving school at 16 but explained “I wanted to take control of my career. Penk Insurance came about when I purchased a client list from a business looking to close and I started up in 1988 on my own. My long-term plan was to slowly build the business, we’ve had difficulties but today we have a great team of knowledgeable staff and the client book is very healthy.” “We started out covering most aspects of insurance, private car, home, travel, commercial vehicles, but it was a very crowded market, so we streamlined and focused on taxi and commercial insurances, it was niche and worked well. From this specialism we gained the confidence to grow, we had a good, solid client base so growth was a sensible step. Recently David took part in the Sport Relief fundraising event at S40 Personal Training where they rowed 1.2million meters, just one example of their community involvement. hesterfield town centre can get a bit of bad press but with three new innovative businesses opening, I’m left feeling encouraged, optimistic and inspired.

Within the space of 24 hours, I’ve met three great local chaps who have recently opened small independent businesses and love what they do. They are intent on offering something unique, styled in the way they want and bringing something new to Chesterfield… and they’re all on the same street. Stephenson Place is seeing a transformation, independent businesses, many of them new and all of them keen to welcome customers. Take a walk down the street and I don't think you'll find one chain store, in this edition we meet three of them.

A relaxed, continental styled coffee shop and bar. Liam Wajs 8 Stephenson Place “I’ve been up and running now for almost eight months” says Liam. “I’d always wanted to run my own business, be my own boss and I just happen to like great coffee, oh and perhaps appreciate a craft ale every now and then!” Liam is also Chesterfield born and bred, he moved to Nottingham, and although he still lives in Nottingham, he commutes into town each day to open up his unique take on café culture. It also enables him to see family, and friends, he still plays local football and his brother Jamie owns Lime Living, 200m away. “I know Chesterfield better than Nottingham and feel comfortable here. I was looking for a change and Society has enabled that change.”

Society used to be Java Coffee Company, a coffee shop and internet café, but owners Steve and Jane had to retire due to health reasons, it opened brieﬂy as Central Perk before Liam was made aware of the opportunity by his brother, Jamie.

“It’s been a complete career change, I used to work in Sports Surface testing, it was good work and took me around the world to many of the world’s best sporting venues, mainland Europe was his common destination. However, I fancied something different, the work I did involved budgeting, planning, customer service, supplier management, all the kind of abilities you need to run your own business. “I’ve always been sociable and thought about running my own bar, but it never became something that was achievable until I started looking at taking on the premises. “I’ve built up some fantastically loyal customers and suppliers have been great to work with. My coffee comes from a roaster south of Bradford. It took me a while to find the right people to work with. The response from my roasters was inspiring. They invited me up, spent some time with me, showed me around and were keen that I

develop a roast with them, so my beans are unique to me and we also sell them bagged so you can enjoy the same great taste at home.”

Society feels European with great coffee, quality beers, it's a friendly place where people get to know each other and socialise, a place where community is built.

“I think it feels a bit like a club here at Society” says Liam. “People soon get to know each other and it’s great when we get a group in and the driver wants a coffee, they end up having a few drinks as I’m always keen to get the coffee machine going.” “It’s not easy. It’s taken a while to get the offer right, I now have a great range of bottled beers and I’ve been working with a local brewery, Heist, in Clowne who have created a Society IPA which is available to take away, and I continue my search for tasty craft beers.” They do snacks in Society, they have a supply of Doughnotts (handcrafted from a supplier close by over the border in Nottingham) plus a selection of brownies and cakes, and you’re welcome to visit Nine Burritos, get a coffee at Society and sit and enjoy lunch.

Society now open at night for relaxed drinks following their daytime success. Liam is keen to host events and they are showing the World Cup Games, so you can watch the game and sample a beer, wine, prosecco or one of the carefully selected gins. They host pop up nights, Brenden tested Burrito menu here, Yvonne’s Paradise Kitchen hosted a night that sold out and each month they have live music upstairs, local and Sheffield bands performing.

Again, I’m left with a new level of respect for a small business owner. He set out to provide a venue that feels unique and he's achieved this and he wants to support those around him. I take my hat off to him, he’s doing his own thing and people like it. I only sampled the one draft beer, but it was a tasty pint. Next door to Society is Scrapes, a truly unique ice cream parlour. The ice cream is made fresh as it’s served, a mixture poured onto a cold slab, mixed with ingredients, then sliced and rolled. The process of making rolled ice cream has to be seen, it is fascinating. It's unlike any other ice cream, and yes, it is hard work, but I tried this too, (Bounty and Strawberries... yum) and can vouch for it. Definitely worth a visit - and they even do home delivery, keep reading! “The idea started a few years ago” says Jack. “I was in electrical sales but like many others I wanted to be my own boss. For a while I sold electrics myself, it was Ok, but I knew it wasn’t me.” “The idea for Scrapes came whilst I worked abroad. Rolled Ice Cream started in Thailand and the Philippines, it spread to the States but it’s still very new in the UK, I’ve joined a very small and select number of businesses.”

Jack started looking at suppliers and became involved with the festival scene through Cheese Fest, from July 2017. “I started selling rolled ice cream at festivals, the Food & Drink Festival at Queen's Park, the Artisan and Farmers Markets and response to the ice creams was fantastic”. “Based on this response and feedback I started looking for my first shop and Chesterfield felt right for the ice cream, and we opened in the winter last year. A strange time to start selling ice cream but it worked.” The ice cream and milkshake menu is huge! Nine Burritos

Offering freshly made Burritos at lunch time. Brenden Jones 35 Stephenson Place

Brenden is a Chesterfield lad and already runs a successful tattoo studio in town, Tattoo HQ. Brenden started his career in roofing sales but with excellent artistic skills decided to set up the studio, this was nine years ago.

“We were on holiday in Dublin” says Brenden, “I was talking to my wife about my love of food and the lack of great quality fast food outlets in Chesterfield. There are lots of chains for takeaways but very few real alternatives where you can pick up something quickly that tastes great.” The seed was sown and he set about establishing a food outlet that he could run alongside the Tattoo business, Burritos in the morning, tattoos in the afternoon. The aim was to target students, town-based workers and professionals looking for a quality lunch. “Everyone loves a Burrito but there is no one offering a takeaway that’s freshly made” adds Brenden.

“The idea has been two years in the making, although I love to cook, it was a learning curve - but already running a business that requires a high level of hygiene and care it wasn’t such a difficult transition.” The premises, located on the corner of Stephenson Place and Corporation Street, was the perfect fit, a short walk from college, on the way to/from the station and just the right size. It needed a lot of work to bring it back to life, but the result is fresh and new.

Nine Burritos (Nine, as 2009 was the year Brendens son was born) make all their own ingredients and they make it fresh every day, nothing is re-used the next day, so you know it’s fresh. It took a while to research and produce their own sauces, but it was worth the wait, they also make most of their own guacamole, salsa and hot sauces (hopefully available to purchase soon) and support local suppliers, Meadowfresh supply their meat for instance.

The recipes were trialled at a pop up night in Society where Brenden fed 25 people for a 40th birthday, the locals in the bar enjoying his first trial run. Response was fantastic and gave Brenden, sometimes referred to as ‘the secret society chef’, the confidence to set up.

Nine Burritos opened on June 4. The menu is simple, Burritos, Boxed Burritos (naked without the wrap) and warm Nachos with cheese and toppings plus a daily vegetarian/vegan option. Popularity and success are evident by the queue that you’ll typically find outside the door over lunch.

They open 11am to 2pm (closed Wednesday and Sunday) and you’ll find them at 33 Stephenson Place. Inclusive Pedals

We learn of options to bring cycling to people who may not have experienced it in many years. Words: Paul Chapman Images: Alastair Meikle

e’ve spoken to Alastair Meikle in previous editions. This month we caught up with him again to learn more about a new inclusive cycling initiative for those who can’t cycle due to their age or a health condition.

College and Our Vision Our Future.

To encourage families to cycle there will be a family cycle training day at Old Hall School on Tuesday 24 July. In the morning the children will cover a Bikeability Level 2 session in the school grounds, whilst parents will cover a level 3 session. After lunch the groups will cycle down to a local café lead by instructors from training organisation, Wheely Fun Wheels. If you’d like to attend please get in touch on 01246 520820 or email info@ wheelyfunwheels.co.uk, a number of families are already signed up, but they have space for more.

Inclusive Pedals Inclusive Pedals is a not-for-profit Community Interest Company bringing cycling to people with disabilities. Operating from Queen's Park they have 15 bikes with 3 or 4 wheels which local disability groups can book on the first Friday of the month, between 1 and 3pm, for group or private sessions. The sessions take place on the old cycle track around the perimeter of Queen’s Park cricket pitch, with typically 15 to 20 people taking part in the sessions.

Additional Big Bike Revival events are taking place locally and further afield until the end of July, check out cyclinguk.org/bigbikerevival/ events.

Inclusive Pedals staff run the sessions, supported by a small team of volunteers, some of whom help out as pilots to pedal the bikes where help is needed. This year Specsavers have been providing two volunteers each session who come along and help out. Inclusive Pedals also run Dr Bike sessions on the first Saturday of the month between 9:30am to 1pm in the Queens’ Park car park where they provide free of charge maintenance and repairs for cyclists. City & Guild qualified mechanics carry out basic repairs charging people for any parts used e.g: a punctured tyre may be caused by an inner tube which is deemed irrepairable, the tube is replaced and you are simply charged for cost of the tube.

Big Bike Revival

Big Bike Revival is an initiative from Cycling UK (the old cycle touring club). It has been running for four years and aims to inspire the 42% of people who own bikes, but who don't cycle, to start riding.

Alastair, through Inclusive Pedals, has secured Big Bike Revival funding to purchase spares and tools to support the Dr Bike project and to run four disability group sessions for Ashgate Croft, Freedom Centre, Chesterfield Page 36

Cycling Without Age

“Is a project started in Denmark where volunteer pilots ride an electric assist trishaw and take out two people passengers for a cycle ride and a chat, giving an older person who can’t cycle anymore the opportunity to go out for a ride.” explains Alastair. “The scheme requires the purchase of the specially adapted bikes ‘trishaws’ and also the recruitment of pilots to do the pedalling. I’ve been in discussion with a number of organisations and have interest from Duke of Edinburgh groups from Brookfield and Chesterfield College who are keen to provide the pilots, and have contacts throughout the area who are keen to get involved and take part in the rides.” “The project is all about social inclusion, to bring people from different generations together to socialise and chat.”

To purchase the trike and set up the pilot scheme, a crowd funder campaign launches on July 1. If successful, Alastair plans to obtain one more. “We have agreement from Chesterfield Borough Council for a location in which to store the trikes safely, we just need to raise the funds to cover the storage and purchase our first trishaw.” www.s40local.co.uk

The trishaws are electrically assisted and allow seating for two plus the pilot, who sits behind the passenger seat. The models required for the first scheme will feature the most powerful battery to ensure they can cope with the Derbyshire hills as opposed to the much more level ground of Copenhagen, where the trishaws are manufactured.

Saturday 29 September is the fifth Cycle In Style ride where riders turn out looking dapper and take part in a short local ride from café to café in Chesterfield. Prizes are awarded for the best dressed riders. Sunday 21 October Family Ride - along the trans Pennine trail from Tapton Lock. The route will pass through Brimington Common, Westwood, Inkersall and back through Staveley to Tapton. The ride will be about 10 miles at a slow pace, mostly on cycle trails with a few on quiet roads.

What is bullying? Words: Tamara Twigg, Anti-bullying Ambassador, with the Diana Award, for St Mary's. Definition as: A person who habitually seeks to harm or intimidate those whom they perceive as vulnerable.

There are many types of bullying, the main types are: physical; verbal and cyber.

Started in November 2017 the #IAMNOTWEAK campaign trended worldwide and succeeded in implementing changes to the dictionary definition on the 5 June 2018. With famous faces getting involved including; Philip Schofield, Sir Richard Branson and Holly Willoughby together with famous brands such as Virgin Media supporting the campaign.

Physical Bullying: 5% of people asked said they had experienced physical bullying constantly, 10% experienced this often and 30% said they had never experienced physical bullying.

The definition was recently changed from “Weaker” to “Vulnerable” due to a campaign from the Diana Award Charity.

The dictionary publishers included Oxford, Cambridge, Collins and even Google - this means that for around 100 million people annually who look up the term “Bully” or “Bullying” no longer read that they are weaker if they are or have been bullied.

'Ditch The Label' is an anti-bullying company aiming to 'take down bullying'. In 2017 they undertook a survey of people aged12 to 20 years old, 10,020 people took part. This is a snapshot of the results.

Verbal Bullying: 15% had experienced it constantly, 20% had experienced it often, and 4% of people said that they had never experienced verbal bullying. Cyber Bullying: 7% said they constantly experienced cyber bullying, 10% said they experienced it often and 35% said that they never experienced cyber-bullying.

The Diana Award is a non-profit charity, established in 1999, 2 years after Diana's death to continue Princess Diana's legacy which was “young people have the power to change the world.”

The Diana Award's Anti-bullying campaign involves a number of different projects aimed to reduce bullying within schools. The most visible project being the Ambassador Scheme, which I have been involved with. This came about due to 16 year old Alex Holmes, being bullied at his school.

The Ambassador Scheme has trained over 24,000 young people across the UK to lead other Anti-bully campaigns within their own schools and became part of the Diana Award in 2011 and has received funding from the Department Of Education since 2013. Once young people received their training they become an Anti-bully Ambassador for their school and set up their own campaigns. Page 40

Verbal bullying is more constantly experienced by young people, however there are ways to help stop bullying if you see it.

You can be an up-stander: someone who intervenes without putting themselves or anyone else in any danger to question the bully - making sure that the target is alright. If you're uncomfortable, try to find a time to approach the bully when they are not in the presence of the target.

You can also report a web page, person or even social media post if it's bullying. The way to do this is different depending on the social media, but all social media sites have ways to report bullying. If you’re not familiar with how, details can usually be found at the help centre (usually in settings) and search “how to report”. How much bullying gets reported, according to Ditch The Label?

Out of those surveyed, 63% of people reported their case of bullying but more alarmingly 37% didn't and chose to stay quiet not seeking any help.

leaving a high percentage unhappy with what happened to support them. In this survey, 77% of them told a friend and all were happy with the support their friends gave them and the ongoing support received.

Often, by the time bullying has taken place, even when there's been support, there are mental scars which may cause future health problems, including social anxiety (37%), depression (36%), skipping classes (21%) and eating disorders (12%).

Of the many that chose to stay quiet, the reasons quoted are “It didn't affect me much” (37%), “I'm scared of it getting worse” (21%) and “My teachers don't care” (15%).

If you see or hear bullying taking place you can always help either directly or by reporting it to the correct agency. By stamping out bullying we allow people to be their authentic selves without fear of being judged by society.

“Well,” said mum, “what made her say that? We always think you are doing ok and your dad and I never hear bad things about you from your teacher’s reports. What made Emma and Eddie agree to go? Eddie hates school and Emma is always top of her class and wouldn’t need extra Maths or English lessons, although Eddie might as he is not quite as clever as his sister”. The next weekend Auntie Mary brought Emma and Eddie over for a visit so mum asked Auntie Mary why she said that I should go to Kip summer school. Emma said that Kip had really helped her start the first year at the new school much more happily, and now she was confident with her friends in top set. “But that isn’t true for Eddie,” said my mum, we all knew that Eddie hated school! Ok, he loved his teacher, friends and playing in the school football team but he always complained that sums and spelling made his brain ache! Auntie Mary laughed

and told us that, yes that had been the case before! She then went on to tell mum that a couple of years ago Eddie began to fret about going back to school. He developed unexplained tummy aches and was losing sleep. She and his dad were a bit concerned then one day in mid-August Uncle Jimmy was clearing out his car, at long last after much nagging, Auntie Mary said, and he found the Kip star leaflet under a seat in his car, shows how often he looked or cleaned under there! Anyway Eddie joined the summer school sessions at Matlock and, much to his surprise, really enjoyed it. Eddie piped up at this point and said that he had learnt how to carry numbers and really liked getting stickers. He loved it so much he stayed on for two years and Kip took him through SATs and through the change to senior school. I’m still not sure I want to go to Kip summer school, but my mum and dad seem determined that I will. I tried to lose the Kip Star leaflet we were given in school last week, but mum asked the teacher for another one. Ah well guess that’s it now, I just hope that I like it as much as Eddie did ’cos I am not brainy like Emma. Dad said I can do the cricket summer school though if I agree to go to Kip and all my mates are doing that so that’s cool. Ben, my best friend, said his mum might let him come to Kip with me as it is only two weeks at the end of August and they will be back from their holidays then. That would be great!

On Behalf of the People Words: Jack Alexander

Following the interview we had with Ray Castleton in May’s edition of S40 Local, this week I had the opportunity to see Ray’s latest play, On Behalf of the People, which showed for two nights at Chesterfield College.

The experience begins actually before the play itself; music and lighting shifts gradually as the cast greets the audience and, through slight costume change in conjunction with an ageing playlist, the clock is turned back and we find ourselves in the early 1940s, where we rest and the scene is set for a young man, a sergeant, on leave from active duty in WWII. As he enters his home, so are we invited to join him. On Behalf is a distinctly human tale of post-war Britain, of the trials and tribulations of a mining family from a mining town, “on the right side of the Pennines,” during the nationalisation of the coal industry alongside the landslide election of Labour into power.

It is direct and informative, delivering on Ray’s promise of a ‘real’ story. In fact, On Behalf of the People doesn’t feel like a play at times. Whilst the production is of course reflective of a bygone era, the characters are as real as you and I. They strive to better themselves, strive to survive. They want little things like a kiss goodbye and a father-son pint, and they want the bigger things too, not only to change the face of a nation but to restructure it from within. These characters are written, and indeed performed, for the cast are quite fantastic, with a precision which can only be granted by knowing. It is not a question of whether they are ‘believable’, more of who in your own family they remind you of most, for they embody the heritage of the British Working Page 48

Class, possessed not only by the spirit of a people, a shared struggle, but something more eternal, as much of the hills and the rivers and the dales as of flesh and blood. When I interviewed Ray for our previous article, his advice for me as someone fresh into the world of commercial writing was “Write what you know.” He has delivered a masterclass in doing precisely that, and the effect is both moving and evocative, whilst thoroughly engaging and educational.

On Behalf of the People now begins its 2018 tour, running until July 20th with its last showing in South Kirkby. In the meantime, On Behalf will be appearing at venues in Sheffield, Derby, Leeds and Manchester, alongside a selection of towns and villages such as Matlock, Buxton and Hathersage.

Raising the roof for the Friends of Somersall Park By now most of our readers will be aware of the hard work the Friends of Somersall Park have been doing raising funds to replace the old and tired play equipment.

The money raised is being used to install new play equipment on the South side of the River Hipper and installation is underway.

Although work has started they were a few £'s short of their total target so fund raising continues so they can hopefully deliver the full plans. On Saturday 16 June a concert took place at St John's Walton, performed by the Minerva A Capella Womens Choir this event was a sell out and saw four local instrumentalist performers as well as the choir.

Soaking It Up This year Chesterfield Cricket Festival host Northants for a 4-day game starting on Sunday 22nd July and Yorkshire for a T20 game on Saturday 28th July - and the organisers are hoping for some dry weather! An essential piece of equipment for any top cricket ground is something to quickly get water off the ground following the British rain. No matter how good the ground’s drainage, it cannot always quickly cope with a deluge. Step forward the Blotter, a fantastic piece of kit and a brilliant bit of British design. It picks up the water quickly into its drum and drops it well away from the cricket field.

Cycle Jersey to Support The Peak Park The Peak District National Park have created a road jersey for cyclists available at National Park visitor centres at Bakewell and Castleton, and online (www.peakdistrict.gov.uk/shop). The design features iconic elements of the Peak District; from the millstones, to gritstone crags on the skyline and the winding passes so revered by cyclists. Unfortunately, Chesterfield’s Blotter was a bit the worse for wear. Not a problem, in a boffin cave in Aylesbury a company tends to the mechanical needs of Britain’s Blotters and returns them pristine and ready to fight any deluge that comes along. Friends of Queen’s Park Cricket, a Registered Charity aimed at increasing community participation in cricket, has paid for the Blotter’s resurrection and it is now poised on the boundary, waiting to spring into action, this summer. Let’s hope the weather stays fine for the Festival but if it doesn’t at least the Blotter is up for the challenge. Rheumatoid Arthritis Support Group Last month we briefly mentioned the Rheumatoid Arthritis support group, Chesterfield, who meet on the first Tuesday of each month at the Community Room, Tesco Extra, Bridge Street North, Clay Cross, Chesterfield. Male Voice Cruise 8.15 am and a group of ladies and gentlemen wait for a coach. Uniforms packed in suit cases, music sorted in our folders we, members of Chesterfield Male Voice Choir, are ready for our two concerts in Balmoral. No, sorry, this was not a royal engagement! The two concerts were to be performed on The 'Balmoral'. The ship owned by Fred Olsen on which we had been invited to perform with our colleagues from Castleford Male Voice Choir. We were off on a cruise to Norway and were due to sing on the voyage. Coach loaded we travelled to Newcastle, picking up the other guests and after speedy processing, were lodged into cabins three hours before we sailed. On day two our concert was scheduled for 3pm, excitement was building, this was the culmination of five months hard work and preparations by the members of the two choirs and especially Andris, our joint conductor. With vowels extended and eyes on the conductor last minute instructions were given, 'not too loud top tenors', 'make sure you watch me basses'. Finally, nerves apart, we were ready and the Cruise Entertainment Director introduced us to the large audience - the 'Men Who Sing', the joint choir's title. Our concert included a wide range of music. Pieces from Les MisĂŠrables, Al Jolson, two soloists, one from each choir, who gave us, If I were a Rich Man and What a Wonderful World, Unchained melody, Stout-hearted Men, The Rose and The Glory of Love, were also well received, the climax - Elvis Presleys favourite An American Trilogy.

An after concert party followed, arranged, as a thank you to the Chesterfield choir, by the Castleford people, a lovely gesture on their part. As we passed beautiful Norwegian scenery, lots of conversation, laughter, as well as food and drink were shared. This was a regular cruise and over the next few days we experienced the delights of Bergen and Eidfjord and some luxurious living. And so back to business for the evening performance. Similar, but extended pieces, from Les Mis: I Dreamed a Dream, Bring Him Home and Do you hear the people sing and Al Jolson's, April Showers, Rock-a-bye My Baby and California Here I come plus Love is all around and The Glory of Love. The solo contributions were The Floral dance and the hilarious I've got a little Whippet. Any choir member in the audience was invited to join for the final item, three top tenors from the Filey Fishermen's Choir joined for a rousing presentation of An American Trilogy. As the final chords rang out it was evident that the concert had been thoroughly enjoyed as the audience rose to give us a standing ovation. This experience will last long in the memories of the members of both choirs. New friendships were formed, contacts established and we all had the satisfaction of sharing our enjoyment in singing with like minded people. A great event we would love to be repeated sometime. News from Whitecotes Playing Field The months of May and June saw the installation of the new sports and play equipment and improvements to the existing playground. Hopefully these will provide much enjoyment as well as challenging physical exercise for children of all ages and abilities. Extra seats have also been installed and no doubt will prove as popular as the seats previously put in place, ideally situated for people to appreciate the lovely views. We are now in the process of applying for funds for the provision of paths across the field. Please visit our website for a plan of these. If we are successful we will be able to put these in place in the Autumn when access for the disabled at three entrances will also be improved. Thank you to all those who sent us wonderful letters of support for both projects and especially to the children

July Garden Tips Words: Transition Chesterfeld Picture: Robert Nixon Betts

There’s quite a lot to do in the garden around now, but pottering around it in summer is one of the rewards for the effort put in over the rest of the year - don’t look on it as work but as relaxation. As well as routine things like mowing the grass and weeding, here are ten other things that may be necessary (depending on what you grow). 1. If you have to water, do so in the evening when there will be less evaporation and the water has a chance to soak into the soil. Using a hose is more efficient than a sprinkler as the water can be directed exactly where it is needed; giving the ground a good soaking once a week is better than a less thorough one every day, which encourages roots to form near the surface. It’s more important that fruit and vegetables are kept well-watered than ornamental plants, some of which produce a better display when slightly stressed anyway. 2. Check for signs of disease on plants prone to them, i.e. blight on tomatoes, clematis wilt or apple scab, and treat accordingly. 3. Prune spring flowering shrubs so they don’t get leggy; most birds will have finished nesting, so you can also trim hedges without disturbing them. 4. Keep watering all plants in containers (indoor and outdoor), and feed them regularly. Anything in grow-bags (especially tomatoes) are prone to problems if watered erratically, so try to have a routine; aim to keep the soil moist but not wet. Plants transpire water all the time, so don’t fall into the trap of thinking if the sun's not shining plants won’t need watering – any breeze or wind will also increase the amount they use. 5. A lot of vegetables should be maturing about now; keep an eye on them, as unreliable weather may cause some to bolt (i.e. form flowers and seeds) - harvest these before this happens, which usually renders them useless anyway. Allow a plant or two to flower if you want to collect seeds, which is what you do with peas and beans anyway. (Transition Chesterfield will be holding a Seed Swap at the Brampton Food Fair in October). 6. Check tomatoes regularly and pinch out any shoots between branches and the stem, which can appear with astonishing speed. 7. If fences or garden furniture need painting or treatment with a preservative, try to do it in the middle of a dry spell. 8. Take lots of pictures of the garden, especially parts which you think could be improved. That way, you’ll have a good reference to use when you come to think about moving things or buying new plants, and with digital cameras it doesn’t cost anything to take lots of pictures anyway! 9. There may still be some vegetable plantlets in garden centres, so it’s not too late to plant some for harvesting this year. But check that they're not too leggy and make sure they have been well looked after – weedy looking seedlings rarely recover. 10. Salads generally mature quite quickly, so you can sow some every week or two to provide a succession of crops – ‘little and often’ is the best way.
