Intro Hello. I start my intro again with a huge thanks to Robert Nixon-Betts for the cover photograph, I saw this and thought 'summer'… and then the sun came out! Thanks Robert. This month I'm feeling impressed by Chris Froome on his 3rd win at the Tour de France and in this edition we chat to local resident Avis Smith, wife of Albert Smith, cyclist and 1950 record holder. We have an update from Sam Broomhead on his triathlon performance so far this year. Who knows - a future record holder in the making… no pressure Sam! I think there’s a fresh feel to this month’s edition. A new designer on board, a couple of young people, Ben and Shauni, who have been in touch asking whether they can contribute articles. I am really happy to have them involved. We have plenty of local new advertisers getting in touch and some new ideas, some in this edition and some not ready until next time.
School holidays are upon us and if you’re short of something to do Trevor The Ink has penned an article sharing his top tips on nearby places of historical interest. Find a map and take a look. Hope the sun continues to shine and I look forward to a few days off over the summer before jumping straight into getting the Autumn edition ready. My last point a small apology or two. Last month's Crossword answers were incorrect, 11 down said tradesman but should have been tradesmen and a slight error in a recent Sudoku. Sorry about that, we're only human but will try harder!

History on our Doorstep
We suggest some great places to get acquainted with local history over the summer. Words: Trevor The Ink Picture: Mary Wilde
I
t’s summer and the kids are home from school. During term they may have liked learning about Saxons or Romans or Celts or Vikings or Normans – these things are taught well nowadays - so are there places in Derbyshire that you could visit that have real connections to the times they are learning about? The answer is yes and here are some. Let’s start with the oldest. Creswell Crags, a nice place for a summer walk, is also where stone-age hunters used to camp out in hunting expeditions. There are
limestone caves where archaeologists have found flint and bone tools, and even evidence of cave drawings – the most northern cave art in Europe. We are not talking ‘early man’ like the millions-of-years old sites in Africa; evidence is that the Creswell caves were in use from about 43,000 to 11,000 years ago. And there may have been Neanderthals there before that. Much of this time would have been during the last lot of ice ages, so you should think of Derbyshire as often being like Siberia or northern Canada: cold! A hard place to make a living in – these guys would have been expert hunters, true survivalists. You know about Stonehenge? Well Derbyshire has a henge too! More than one in fact. Not as big, as Stonehenge, but the same idea: a circular embankment, a ditch inside the embankment, and a flat bit in the middle with a ring of stones. Derbyshire’s best is Arbor Low, near Middleton by Youlgrave. It’s at least 4,000 years old, from about the time that people in Britain first learned how to farm (the ‘New Stone Age’). The stones are much smaller than at Stonehenge, and don’t have cross pieces, but you can see it’s the same deal. And, like its big brother in Wiltshire, our henge has other ancient sites very near to it. In sight of Arbor Low is Gib Hill – a man-made mound (profs call it a barrow) over a burial site. Folks back then often had sets of monuments and ceremonial routes that were meant to go together. We do too: think of the Arc De Triomphe and the ChampsÉlysées in Paris.
T'owd Man in Wirksworth Church Page 4 www.s40local.co.uk
Also from around the same time – may be not worth getting out of the car to visit as it’s private land - but interesting (and a bit creepy ) to know about – is Wigber Low. This is a cairn on a hill to the east of the B5056 just south of Bradbourne. There, archaeologists have found evidence of excarnation – which means that instead of burying or cremating the bodies of the dead, people put the corpses on platforms in the open air. The idea seems to be that your
dead friends, relatives and ancestors were somehow keeping watch over your land, and marking its borders. Some cultures still do this. Best guess is that many of our other famous Derbyshire hill-top beauty spots once had these sacred open graveyards. Up by Castleton is the hill of Mam Tor. At the top of Mam Tor is a Bronze Age hill fort. This was occupied from about 1350 BC, though the walls may be a bit later. It’s quite an early example of a hill fort. Most were built during the Iron Age right until the Romans came - the whole country filled up with them. We don’t know the exact history, but the times must have been very violent. It’s interesting to go to Peveril Castle and look across at the Tor and wonder why two ‘forts’ from different ages are so close to each other. From the castle you can make out Mam Tor’s earthen ramparts curving round below the top of the hill. There is very little surviving Roman stuff in Derbyshire, unfortunately. Probably the main things that survive are parts of place names. ‘Chesterfield’ is from early English, and means a fort surrounded by a clearing. The

Anglo-Saxons used the old Roman (Latin) word for fort - ‘castrum’ - which gradually became pronounced ‘chester’. Chesterfield was a Roman fort up till about 150 AD, on the route from Derby to York. St Mary’s Gate in town was probably the main north-south road through the centre of the Roman fort. Surviving Anglo-Saxon stuff is often to do with churches, because these were often built in stone. If you go down to Repton you will find St Wystan’s church, which was a burial place of the Kings of Mercia. Mercia was one of greatest of the seven Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of England. Its most famous king was Offa who built Offa’s Dyke, a giant ditch which separated England and Wales. He ruled in the late 700s. A couple of his successors are buried in an ancient crypt beneath the church, which you can visit. It’s a tiny, spooky, atmospheric place. Closer to home is Wirksworth. If you pop into St Mary’s church you can see the stone lid that covered the grave of ‘Betti’ an AngloSaxon monk who lived in the 600s AD. It’s richly carved with images of angels. There

is other stuff in the church too – including the famous “T’owd Man” – a carving of a miner that may be Saxon or early Norman. Dotted around Derbyshire are ‘preaching crosses’: carved stone crosses, originally about 10 foot high which served as meeting places for religious services even before there was a church. The best are at Bakewell and Eyam. They have swirling scroll-work patterns, and you can make out human shapes – images of saints and religious scenes. Other crosses are by the churches in Brailsford and at Bradbourne.
Not a lot of Viking stuff has survived, it has to be said. But if you do go to Repton to see the Saxon crypt, you would also be in the centre of what was the winter base of the Viking ‘Great Army’ in 873. There are burial mounds in the woods nearby. This was the army that took over about half of England, and which renamed the old Merican town of Northworthy with the Viking name of Derby.
The most atmospheric local survival from Norman times is the ruined Peveril Castle at Castleton, which has one of the most dramatic settings of any castle in the UK. There were other castles in Derbyshire, like at Duffield, but these have mostly been pulled down. But the main Norman survivals are the churches. One of the UK's very finest is in St Michael’s in Melbourne in the south of Derbyshire. It’s like a little cathedral, is still in great condition, and was probably a royal church. Naturally there’s more surviving history form later periods, but that’s for another article.
Gib Hill
Also at Bakewell, just inside the porch door, are a set of carved heads and gravestones. Some of
these are possibly Saxon, though most would be from Norman times. The heads were probably decorative features round the outside of the early church. The gravestones have images that tell you what the person did in life – shears, swords, things like that.

T
he Eroica article in the June edition stirred some memories for local resident Avis Smith, whose husband Albert Arthur Leslie Smith was a keen, fast and tenacious cyclist. Albert qualified in the season of 1950 for the British Best All Rounder - an annual British cycle-racing competition. To qualify riders achieve an average speed of 22mph during individual time trials of 50 miles, 100 miles and then 12 hours as fast as they can covering the furthest distance, Albert covered 255 miles and in fact the route near Bath had to be extended as he had time remaining and since 1938 The North Midland record had been 249 miles. Albert achieved a combined 21.433 mph.
So having completed the ‘tourist course’ at the Eroica on my relatively new bike, by Albert's standards, I am now in a position to appreciate and respect the achievements of anyone who powered along on bikes with so little tech and next to no gears. Albert sadly, passed away in 2008 but his wife Avis, from Holymoorside, was keen to tell me his story. He was a member of the Bolsover Castle Cycling Club from 1949 and was beating records almost from the outset. He held records from just his second year in the club. He was a man with focus and the results showed. He started cycling in a time when roads were quiet, before cycling he boxed and swam, developing a powerful frame that he was able to apply to the bike. “Albert’s father was in the first and second World Wars starting at the young age of just 16 in the Navy. He was torpedoed in the second World War and spent eight hours in the sea. Albert worked for a brief period in the mining industry and later trained as a welder at Chesterfield college.
Albert covered 255 miles and, in fact, the route in Bath had to be extended as he had time remaining!
“He worked at the area workshops at the Markham Colliery for the coal board. He was encouraged to join the new skills centres, set up by Margaret Thatcher and he and his family relocated to Letchworth Garden City in Hertfordshire. The centres were later shut down and Albert retired at the age of 62. He and his family then returned to Chesterfield, settling in Holymoorside where he focused his efforts on the garden, he was always a busy man.” Page 18 www.s40local.co.uk
Albert cycled during an age when children used their bikes for getting around, there was little in the way of public transport and with very few people owning cars the roads were almost empty.
Albert was a star of his age, he gave up cycling once married to concentrate on family life and when Avis and Alberts first child Brent came along he was carried around in a cycle side car.
Living on Castle Lane, Bolsover he had to climb the hill back home every day which must have contributed to his fitness levels. Today children are more likely to be ferried around in cars, and with the roads being so busy are less likely to enjoy the freedoms experienced by Albert.
It was fascinating to meet Avis and hear her story about a local cycling champion. I’ll make a note to raise my cap to Albert as I cycle up Harewood or Loads Road in the future, as I follow on his back wheel.
“Albert spent time out with his bike riding and training for races in the Peak District with friends, Ron in particular” says Avis. “When working at Chesterfield he would cycle daily from his home in Bolsover and would often beat the bus back home, such was his turn of speed.”
Albert AL Smith NCU 50 mile Time Trial 4 June 1950 2 hrs 10 min
Avis spoke about how at that time there were two bike shops on Chatsworth Road, one being Jimmy Websters situated near Johnsons Ironmongers.

A Run To
Insp re If you’re looking for your next challenge this autumn, or thinking of doing your first half marathon, then look no further than the inspiring run of the Chesterfield Half Marathon; organised by national children’s cancer charity, Kids n Cancer, and taking place on Sunday 2nd October. Words: Julie Harrington Image: Destination Chesterfield
Page 22 www.s40local.co.uk
New improved route
All for charity
This year's course is flatter, faster and more appealing, passing twice through Chesterfield centre and past the Crooked Spire, it's an allroad route.
The event is organised by Chesterfield based Kids ‘n’ Cancer, a specialist children’s cancer charity, which provides a life-line to children fighting cancer who need to travel abroad for Proton Therapy.
We've retained the popular stretch through Hasland, where runners are greeted by crowds of supporters and this year we have a new section along Chatsworth Road. The event coincides with the Chatsworth Road Festival weekend so you can expect lots of support.
Race for all In addition to the individual Half Marathon, there are also two team relays; the 2 x 10K relay - for a team of 2, each completing a leg of the half marathon equivalent to approximately 10K, and a 4 x 5K relay – for a team of 4, each completing a leg equivalent to approximately 5K. The relays are perfect if you've run events such as ‘Race for Life’ over the summer and want to keep up your running into autumn. It’s a great way to bring friends/work colleagues together to complete a half marathon between you whilst raising money for a favourite cause.
Proton Beam Therapy, not available in the UK, is an alternative to traditional radiotherapy, proven to be as effective in treating cancer as traditional methods, but with fewer side effects, due to the accuracy of the pencil proton beam. Radiation is sent exactly where it’s needed, avoiding damage to surrounding healthy tissues and organs. This is especially important in children to avoid future health problems.
Sponsorship Last year's event attracted 4000 people and 1200 athletes. Sponsorship is a great way to get involved and support the event. Businesses who sign up to a sponsorship package will be included on marketing materials, specific to the sponsorship package. To find out more please contact Julie Harrington on the
numbers below or email julie@ chesterfieldmarathon.co.uk
Volunteer and raise money for your charity! Runners can either run for fun or to raise money for a charity of their choice, but ALL profits from the event are shared between Kids n Cancer and many other charities and community/not for profit groups through the Volunteer Share Scheme. Every Chesterfield Marathon volunteer receives a share of the profits from the event to donate to a charity of their choice. Last year's charities included Macmilllan, Diabetes UK, the British Heart Foundation, RSPCA and Chesterfield Scouts.
All day entertainment
The races start and finish in Queen’s Park where we'll also be hosting an all day Party in the Park. This is a fun event for runners and their families/friends, where you can enjoy food, drink, have chance to recuperate whilst enjoying entertainment, fairground rides and other attractions.
There's also a Fun Run in Queen’s Park. All races are open to runners of all abilities and are fully wheelchair accessible.
Cash prizes There's a medal and goody bag for all half marathon and relay runners and cash prizes for the first three male and female runners and the winning relay teams (£500 & free entry for 2017 as first prize), as well as a trophy for the winners.
So what’s stopping you? To sign up now for the Chesterfield Half Marathon, or one of the relays, or to find out more visit the website or contact Julie on 01246 269023.

Book Review
Summer Book Review
Maison Mes Amis' Book Club offers up three titles for your Summer holiday reading. The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry
The Little Paris Bookshop Nina George
Rachel Joyce
Annie Barrows and Mary Ann Shaffer
The Book Club all agreed it was a touching novel, full of symbolism.
The book club absolutely loved this book.
Harold is a retired Englishman, a timid man, living with his wife in Devon. He discovers that a former friend and colleague, Queenie Hennessy, is dying of cancer in a nursing home in BerwickUpon-Tweed. He intends to write to her but instead sets out on a 600mile walk without maps and suitable clothing and footwear for a marathon walk and leaving his wife behind. He believes that in some way his journey will help his friend to live.
On a beautifully restored barge on the Seine Jean Perdu runs a bookshop; or rather a ‘Literary apothecary’. Jean has a rare gift for sensing which books will soothe the troubled souls of his customer. The only person he is unable to cure is himself. He has nursed a broken heart ever since the night, twenty years ago, when the love of his life fled Paris, leaving behind a handwritten letter that he has never dared read.
During the walk he attracts a growing band of fellow pilgrims and becomes the centre of a media storm. Harold believes he must keep going without really understanding why.
Page 26 www.s40local.co.uk
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie
The arrival of Catherine forces him to confront his past and love again and Perdu sets sail and begins to live again. The story of the novel is magical and it is impossible not to become engrossed.
What is the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society? This is the question that sparked a series of letters between Juliet Ashton and Dawsey Adams, a founding member of the society. Juliet is a London writer and struggling to come up with a new book idea at the end of the Second World War. She receives a chance letter from Dawsey when he comes across a book she once owned. A series of letters reveal a story of Guernsey’s German occupation. Juliet’s questions and curiosity carry you through the story. In spite of the upsetting tales of wartime Guernsey and the plight of its residents, the theme is one of survivorship. The Channel Islands were the only part of the British Isles to be seized by the Nazis who occupied between 1940 and 1945, with little or no resistance from the British Army, who focused on protecting the mainland.

The Piltdown Picasso Chesterfield author Robin Richards tells us how he arrived at his first crime novel.
T
he breakthrough, for me, came when I was fourteen years old. I was but a callow youth, with acne and a pair of huge glasses, like the bottoms of a pair of rinsed out jam jars, perched on my nose end. And I was bored, bored as only a teenager can be bored. One day, when I was ranging around the house not knowing what to do with myself, my poor exasperated mother said to me, ‘For heaven’s sake our Robin, do something constructive, anything, why don’t you sit down and read a book?’ Read a book? Reading a book was the last thing on earth I wanted to do. Reading books was for swats and sissies, not proper lads. I wanted to be out doing the things proper lads did, adventurous things; swimming, playing football, climbing mountains, not reading books. Undeterred she thrust into my hand a rather dog-eared copy of Alistair MacLean’s Puppet on a Chain. ‘Here,’ she said, ‘read that, you’ll like it, it’s all about spies and things.’ I was quite sure I wouldn’t like it but, in all truth, I had nothing better to do, so I opened it up and began to read.
like Alistair MacLean, I hadn’t lived the eventful life he had and what was more, when I’d finished school, I was expected to go out and get a job, a proper job. As there were not many openings in South Yorkshire at that time for budding crime writers I embarked on a convoluted career path which, with the benefit of hindsight, could have been designed to slowly and progressively build that foundation of life and experience on which a crime writer needs to draw.
AWARD WINNING CRIME NOVEL... ‘If You Enjoy Dick Francis You Will Enjoy Robin Richards.' The Wishing Shelf.
I never knew books could be like that! … That a book could grab you from page one, line one. That it could pull you into the narrative and keep you there through a breathless, roller-coaster ride of snappy dialogue, action-adventure and excitement right up to the nailbiting climax. We never read anything at school which came anywhere close. That was it – I was hooked. Thank you mother, and thank you Mr MacLean. From that moment I became a reader, an avid reader. I didn’t just read books, I devoured them, books of every kind and crime thrillers were, and still are, my favourites.
I’ve been an apprentice gardener (would you believe I’m qualified in manure?), a youth hostel warden in a remote corner of the English Lake District, a failed ball-bearing salesman, a student and, for most of my working life, a psychiatric nurse and nurse lecturer. In 2008 the nursing profession decided I was surplus to requirements so following early retirement and redundancy I decided to see how far I could go as a full time writer.
In one of those strange quirks which happen in life my first book didn’t turn out to be a crime thriller. I decided the transition from full time work to full time writer might just be a bit of shock to the system (from frayed nerves to frayed cuffs) so I packed a rucksack and set out to walk from Land’s End to John O’Groats, in relatively easy stages and, as I professed to be a writer, to write about the whole experience. My first book LE-JOG-ed, (LE-JOG being an abbreviation of Land’s End to John O’Groats), was the result. Having got that out of my system, and with a published book under my belt, I am now firmly established in the crime writing groove, The Piltdown Picasso is my first crime novel with a second one, working title: Nasty, Brutal and Short, to hopefully follow soon.
Paperback & Ebook
Somewhere, in the years that followed, the notion began to grow in my mind that maybe I shouldn’t just be reading books but perhaps I could even try my hand at actually writing them. But just where does a teenager, more than a little damp behind the ears, start? I wasn’t Page 28 www.s40local.co.uk

Chesterfield Life through the eyes of Shauni-Jaye. Words: Shauni-Jaye
M
y name is Shauni-Jaye, I am a young, easily inspired mind with a taste for beautiful things. I am lucky enough to have been born and raised on the outskirts of the wonderful town called Chesterfield. Living in such a stunning area made my bumpy childhood run a little smoother. I’ve grown up in a small semi-detached council house on a rural estate with a single Mother with whom there hasn’t always been an explicit amount of money. My Father left before I can remember and since then I have never had much contact with him. My struggle through primary school and secondary school was complete hell, and after dropping out in year 8 I struggled with my mental health. Selfharm, suicidal thoughts and severe anxiety has haunted me for most of my teenage years. I am lucky enough to have an amazing doctor who helped me find some fantastic organisations to help me through my problems, as well as doing his utmost to help me himself, thank you Dr Scriven. Some of these organisations include CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service), MAT (Multi Agency Team) and The Princes Trust. These are just some of the most helpful places that we in Chesterfield have access to. I don’t remember much through my low times, but what I do remember are all the fantastic moments I spent with my closest friends and family in Chesterfield town. For example visiting the Crooked Spire on a school trip, I remember being stood at the foot of the door into the church, I looked up and it was one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. I was so proud to live so close to such an eyecatching building. I remember going into Chesterfield town centre with my Auntie on a Saturday to buy veg for the Sunday dinner. She always used to buy me a few carrots to give to the shire horse (Captain) he always stood at the top of the market. I adored that horse. Those Saturdays are the reason why I now ride and compete at local riding clubs.
Page 30 www.s40local.co.uk
Living in Chesterfield we are very close to Chatsworth House and Grounds, Bakewell Town as well as hundreds of miles of rolling moors. We are surrounded by small, old fashioned villages, some with the same families living there for hundreds of years. Growing up in Chesterfield can sometimes be like growing up on a small island, especially if you don’t go out of the area much like me. I was never lucky enough to go out shopping every weekend or go abroad on holiday every year, I was lucky if I went to Skegness for a few days every other year or so. Luckily for me, in my sporting area we are surrounded by local riding clubs, competition venues, beautiful riding areas with amazing scenery. Where I live is a far cry from town life, it is quiet and peaceful, and the sort of place where you can watch the sunrise in a morning with a cup of Yorkshire tea whilst listening to the birds singing. It's the kind of old fashioned village where you can call at your neighbours for a cup of sugar, everyone is friendly and you can always count on someone to help you out. We still have an ice-cream van that comes around the village every night, playing the same tune that’s been played by his family since the making of ice-cream vans. Overall there is nothing bad that I could ever say about living and growing up in Chesterfield. We are all set in our ways and that will never change. If anyone is struggling with any of the issues mentioned on this page please feel free to email me at shaunijaye@gmail.com

Happy 3rd Birthday to Kip McGrath Chesterfield! Jo Linthwaite (Kip McGrath) We have grown amazingly since we first opened our doors in Chesterfield. Not just in numbers of students, but tutors and most impressively in the number of students who stay with us for longer than a year. We have even had some adult students as well who have needed specific results for their careers!! We always celebrate our students’ success both at the Centre and on our Facebook page, and at this happy birthday time we want to shout it from the rooftops. Congratulations to all our Year 6 children. They worked so hard and tackled the new curriculum and tricky SATs with a positive attitude. I have been delighted at their progress and willingness to tackle everything from algebra to the devilish subjunctive! Also: Our GCSE students have been a joy to work with. They’ve taken on board all our advice, put in extra hours and shown great determination. It’s been wonderful to see them realise just how far they can go! We’re looking forward to them getting their results and watching them progress in the future. Watch this space in September! We often get wonderful comments from both our parents and students and it means a lot to all the staff that we have made a positive improvement to each and every student we support.
“Kip is a great place to be; it is a polite environment. Full of good vibes and laughter. You learn so much and have fun in the process. When I first came I didn’t have a clue on how to do maths but now I can work out the diameter of a circle in 5 seconds! I have moved on to English and I am getting all the grades I need and learning something every day. With help from Jo, I feel more comfortable to put my hand up in class and do not feel embarrassed if I get it wrong.” Jade age 13 “The first day I went to Kip McGrath, I was 13 and quite nervous. But over the next few weeks I became more and more confident with my English and maths skills. I am now 15 and continue to go to Kip improving my English and maths skills every week.” Finbar age 15 As we prepare for the summer holiday, I’d like to thank all our students for their hard work; the tutors for their dedication and our parents, whose support is such an integral part of Team Kip! Have a great summer and see you in Summer School! All the best Jo Tel: Jo on 01246 220224
However when I said we were writing about our 3rd Birthday and what we have achieved, two of our older students wanted to get in on the act! Here is what they wrote:

Sam Broomhead
Thanks to his sponsors Fusion Group and CK Group. Words: Ben Turner
B
ack in autumn 2015, you may have read about Walton triathlete, Sam Broomhead. A lot has happened in Sam’s life since the last instalment in his story. He has now begun attending university and, as he explains, “University has been an incredible experience so far, I’ve settled in really well at Nottingham and I’m enjoying my degree”. Last time he told us about his search for sponsorship, one which has been successful as he tells us about his joint sponsors “Two businesses based in Chesterfield sponsor me, one, a globally operating manufacturing company who are experts in multi-utility infrastructure products, called Fusion Group and the other, a specialist recruitment agency, called CK Group. Both are providing me with financial support this season so that I can achieve my potential.” He also fills us in about what sponsorship means to him, saying “Thanks to CK Group and Fusion Group I don’t have to worry about whether or not I can afford to do a certain race or will have the equipment required for it, I can just focus on getting the best out of myself and getting a good result.” The recent European Duathlon Championships in Germany, which Sam competed in, was a great experience by all accounts, as he elaborates, “It was a fantastic experience for me, giving me a real taste of what’s to come in future years if I keep working hard. In the race itself I wasn’t expecting much, to be honest I was just ecstatic to be there competing for my country. On the bike, the work I’d put in to training really showed and I was able to move up the field into 4th position in my age group. On the last run I was slowly, slowly catching up to the German athlete ahead in 3rd place but didn’t have enough time to close the gap. I was extremely happy to finish 4th, only 8 seconds off a medal at my first European Championships. Having qualified for
Page 38 www.s40local.co.uk
next year’s race, I’ll be back stronger next time!” Sam is also a member of his university’s performance squad, a commitment he explains in more detail, “After meeting certain standards in the opening weeks of term, I was selected to train with the University Performance Squad. This consists of the 4 best male and 4 best female triathletes and the major advantage of the squad is the amount of opportunities we receive. We’re coached by Level 3 British Triathlon Coach Steve Lloyd who is head coach for the West Midlands region. Steve has a lot of experience and brings a wealth of knowledge with him, and thanks to the university’s partnership with Steve’s club, Absolute Tri, we get access to an extra swim session a week at a 50m pool, as well as access to running track sessions, skills sessions on a closed cycle circuit, video analysis of our swimming technique and 1-2-1 meetings with Steve to discuss all things triathlon. We also have the possibility of attending warm weather training camps with Steve alongside some of his academy athletes to get the most out of ourselves.” As Sam tells us, there are some very exciting times ahead for him. “I’ve had a couple of big results lately, at the end of May I finished 3rd in my age group against a really good field at the Nottingham Triathlon, a European qualifying event. As a result I’ve now qualified for the European Triathlon Championships, held in May next year in Dusseldorf. In my next race after that, I finished 2nd in my age group and 5th overall out of a field of 800. It was brilliant to get a result like that against such a big field and it shows that my hard work over the last year has really paid off.” Sam is a very hard working athlete and we would like to once again wish him all the best for the future. Hallamshire Military Concert Band Words: Ian Gerrard (Chesterfield Male Voice Choir)
T
he Chesterfield Male Voice choir will be holding their Autumn Concert at St Thomas Church on 17 September 2016 (see advert opposite).
The concert will feature special guests the Hallamshire Military Concert Band. Ian Gerrard from the choir dropped me a note and a picture to give a little background to the band who are still going strong 76 years after forming. The Band originates from the Hallamshire Battalion (Territorials) of the York & Lancaster Regiment. The Battalion was originally raised from the Sheffield Hallam area – hence “Hallamshires”. Bandmaster Lawrence Wilgoose reformed the Battalion Band after the war, the Band having lost much of its equipment in the Norway Campaign 1940. It became a civilian band in 1967 after Regimental mergers but kept the name.
Former Bandmaster Tommy Tuft took over and on his retirement about 30 years ago the present Musical Director, Christine English took over the reins. The Band is fully self-supporting and relies on membership contributions and concert fees. We play a wide variety of music to suit the occasion. We can offer concerts in a variety of venues including churches, village halls, fetes etc. We play regularly at Chatsworth House. We played for the 150th anniversary of the Regiment in Sheffield Cathedral 2009 and for the commemoration of the Great War in 2014. On October 29th, we hold our annual Festival of Remembrance Concert at St. Peter’s Church, Greenhill, Sheffield with all proceeds going to the Poppy Appeal. Business News News Olympia House Antiques Space to rent
Busy Bees at StraightCurves
If you’ve called in at Olympia House Antiques you’ll have seen the vast array of items both new and old they have for sale. The centre consists of rented spaces of which they currently have some available. If you are a seller of antiques, crafts, collectables, records, clothing or anything interesting, and are looking for a space in which to sell your wares please call in for a chat. Prices start from a very reasonable £40pcm.
StraightCurves began when Karen Rogers taught her first crochet course in a hired space within Pam Cakes café in June 2013. Since then, their expansion has been fast and furious, and they recently celebrated their third birthday in the three-storey studio building on Saltergate that they now call home.
Contact: 07542 516627.
Karen describes it as “a home for all crafts, for both kids and adults alike; a place where anything can be accommodated - sewing, drawing, art, quilting, clay, crochet, knitting, pottery, pattern cutting, coiled basketry, machine embroidery, felting, and even a book club…”
Award Winning! Simon Chalk Age Partnership Simon Chalk has for the second time won the coveted title of ‘Best Equity Release Broker’ at the British Mortgage Awards 2016 held in London, receiving his award from comedian Russell Kane. Together with 3 other earlier national awards, this marks Simon (pictured with his award) out as the UK’s leading expert on equity release.

If you don’t know what they do, I’ll have a go at describing it: Everything!
They are constantly developing new courses and workshops, and I heard a rumour whilst I was there about a possible cake club! Karen’s background is in teaching, and in the three years since starting up has moved her crafty business from Pamcakes & Chesterfield Studios to a unit above the Market Hall, and finally in November 2014 to her own premises at 104 Saltergate. I asked her how the business plan is going and her response was “typically Karen” – anybody who has met her will know what this means! “Our plan is quite a simple three point strategy: not to lose money, for people who work for us to be happy, and for people who attend the courses to be happy. So far we haven’t lost much money and people are always smiling!” When I called in to chat to Karen without my iPad, glasses, pen or paper they smiled, laughed, sorted a solution quickly, and I felt like I fitted right in! So the news is at the end of May, StraightCurves picked up the Leisure Retailer of the Year award at the 2016 Chesterfield Retail Awards, and now has some great news regarding Tracey Symonds, who made it into the semi finals of this year’s The Great British Sewing Bee. Tracey’s home is Chesterfield, and she has developed a set of courses and workshops in subject areas new to StraightCurves. The first course starts on 8th August and will cover how to make pyjama bottoms from cotton and jersey fabrics - check out StraightCurves website for details! Throughout the school holidays StraightCurves will be running a Summer School for all-day crafty childcare (age 6+), one-off workshop sessions for children aged 3+, and their regular toddler group on Monday and Friday mornings continues throughout the holidays. They also offer parties, so if you have a special occasion or birthday coming up, give Karen or Roz a call as they have such a wide range of activities that there really is something to please everyone! Look out for more about StraightCurves in future editions!

Business News News Open Garden: Sun 28 August Richard and Sharon Smithson, Chesterfield in Bloom overall winners 2015 are holding an open garden to raise funds for the Chesterfield Tsumeb twinning link. Money raised will go to projects in Tsumeb including, The aged persons home, the kindergarten, young acheivers group and the hearing impaired group. The open day is on Sunday 28th August 11am to 4pm at 70 Hawksley Avenue Newbold Chesterfield S40 4TL. Entry is ÂŁ3 per person including tea or coffee.
Brampton Living History Group Sadly the Brampton Living History Group will be winding up after their present run of talks and presentations comes to a close. Sonia Preece, group secretary, has been in touch to say that after 40 plus years they will have to finish. Numbers have been dwindling in
recent meetings and although the committee struggled on for as long as they could they have had to bow to the inevitable at the last meeting end of June.
Elder Yard Chapel Heritage Open Weekend Thu 8 to Sun 11 September One of the oldest surviving buildings in Chesterfield will be open and free to explore on 8, 9, 10 and 11 Sept from 10am to 4pm . During your visit you will be able to look around the building and its contents with the aid of a free information pamphlet and / or a member of the congregation. There will be a charity coffee morning with homemade cakes on Sat 10th Sept (10am-12). The monthly service will be taking place 3-4pm on Sunday 11th September. Everyone of any faith, or no faith, is welcome to this special service. Elder Yard Chapel was built in 1694 when the surrounding areas
were a mixture of small alleyways and cottages for working people. The congregation was founded by Reverend John Billingsley, ejected as vicar of Chesterfield Parish Church as a result of the 1662 Act of Uniformity. Initially the congregation secretly met in private houses or fields. The passing of the 1689 Act of Toleration enabled Cornelius Clarke of Norton (High Sherriff of Derbyshire in 1670) to purchase 'a parcel of land near Ellar Yard' to build a meeting place for dissenting protestants for religious worship. No need to book in advance people can just turn up on the day. Copies of the detailed history of the building will be available to purchase (ÂŁ5.00). Elder Yard Chapel is located between the Co-op supermarket on Elder Way and the Victoria Shopping Centre on Knifesmithsgate. S401UR. www.heritageopendays.org.uk

Garden 10 Garden TipsThings
Garden Things for August Words: Transition Chesterfield Picture: Robert Nixon Betts
1. Second Early potato varieties will be ready to harvest now, depending upon when they were planted, they usually take about 16 weeks to produce a good crop. They can be lifted as you want them but if you notice slug holes in the crop it is better to lift them all before the damage worsens. Store only the undamaged tubers and use the others quickly. 2. Summer pruning of apple and pear trees can be done now. This helps them to keep their form and remain healthy without having congested growth. 3. Most hedges can be pruned or trimmed into shape now, bird nesting should be over, and this will give time for limited new growth before it slows down in autumn. 4. Keep sowing quick-maturing salad crops – rocket, radishes, mixed leaves and some lettuces are all candidates – they’ll go on growing until the first frosts. Several lettuce varieties including Winter Density, Great Lakes and Lambs lettuce (corn salad) will last through the winter. 5. If you’ve got empty patches of soil, consider sowing a green manure; this will cover the ground and put much needed nutrients back into the soil. This will stop weeds becoming established and is best dug in before it sets seed. 6. Several herbs can be sown at this time of year in a greenhouse or cold frame e.g. chervil, dill, parsley and coriander can be protected from frost this way and will crop during the late season and winter. 7. Pot up any strawberry runners that have rooted, or encourage them to do so by pinning them firmly to the ground and make sure they are watered in a dry spell. 8. Apart from gently pottering around the garden, this should be the time of year you can spend most time simply enjoying it; however, it's the time most plants, including weeds, also enjoy, so try to stop them setting seed – there's an old saying, 'one year’s seeding is seven years’ weeding'... 9. Keep feeding birds to attract them to the garden, where they will also hunt out damaging insects and larvae. A shallow pool is a great wildlife draw, with the possible added bonus of seeing blackbirds washing themselves in a comically Victorian fashion, constantly checking to make sure they're not being overlooked, and covered head-to-toe in black. 10. The INSPIRE COMMUNITY GARDEN is taking shape and many of our first crops are now ready. Why don’t you come to have a look at our plot and meet the volunteers involved in the project? If you’d like some freshly picked fruit or vegetables why not visit us on a Sunday between 10am and 3pm. The entrance is via the bottom of the Ashgate Road Car Park (S40 4AA).
