Intro
Happy New year to you all, and welcome to the Winter edition. It's also our 100th edition, but we'll ignore that until we hit our 10th Birthday Anniversary at edition 102 in April. Thank you to everyone who provided congratulation messages, just let us know if you have something you'd like to share in this edition. We’re on the right side of the Winter Solstice now, as my Mum quotes at this time of year, by the end of January it will still be light at 5pm, so light is literally round the corner. Congratulations to Sue Ridley again! Second time in a row her name has come out of the hat for completing the crossword. It seems at the moment that new magazines are popping up all over Chesterfield, so it’s never been more important for you, our readers and supporters to let advertisers know when you’ve found their services in S40 Local. It really does make a difference to people’s decisions to continue advertising with us, which keeps the magazine running. We did launch S40’s sister magazine, S41 Local, last month, run by Simon Paterson and Bekah Anstey so I’d also encourage you to support them and to get in touch if you’d like an advert with them or in both magazines. Finally, to keep us interesting and relevant we need to make sure we represent the community and share the stories of local people, places and activities. Know about something interesting? Written an article or short story? Please send it in or get in touch to ask us to write the article, we’ll consider it and do our best to include it, if space allows - we'd love to hear from you. If it’s about a business or a paid event we’d ask you support us by taking an advert, but for anything else we just want to share your stories and bring the community even closer together. Please get in touch! Paul. T: 07764 801080 E: paul@s40local.co.uk

New Year New You? Words: Paul Chapman Images: Helen Rowan Photograpy
This month's cover pic (courtesy of Helen Rowan Photography) features Ellie Sheppard, a student at Brookfield, who started dancing at the age of three and clearly loves to dance. She’s been attending Kickers Dance School (Brampton) for the past 13 years and is passionate about dance. “I’ve taken part in numerous pantomimes and compete every year in competitions with my dance troupe in the capital of dance … Blackpool” says Ellie. “In the summer our troupe attended the Can You Dance convention, going on to win the regional finals with a very moving dance about the suffragette movement.” Congratulations go to Ellie who has recently passed her dance examinations with a distinction. Right now, she’s in year 11 and is working hard towards her GCSEs. Her long-term plans are A levels and then she hopes to go on to dance college to pursue a career in the fabulous world of dance. When asked what dancing means to her she enthusiastically replies “Everything! I dance four times a week and help out on Saturdays, this keeps me active and focused. “I love to express myself through the use of different dance genres and I’ve made some friends for life through my love of dance.” What would you say to inspire others? “If you can dream it you can do it, come along to Kickers and see what we are all about.”
As adults our schedules are so hectic, and the same is true of many children. Every minute of every day feels like it's planned out, making time to enjoy the things we do often feels selfish, but would we all benefit from making this time? Benefiting our own health, mental and physical wellbeing? We all have unique ways to escape from the routine, whether it be reading, cooking, football, gaming, skydiving etc. But it’s important to set time aside for it, or to find a way to work it into the schedule so it becomes just what we do, something for the mind and body. The simple things might help, at lunch perhaps, take a walk to the sandwich shop for instance, time away from the desk, headspace, easy going exercise. If it's something a bit more sporty you're after, there are many gyms and fitness traininers locally, there is also a large green outdoor space (the Peak District) that's free to use 24:7! Find that sport that suits you, join a club, in this edition we've met dancer Ellie, we talk to Jo at Princes Sports Club about Squashfest and the drive to get youngsters into the sport and we have a brief history of the Chesterfield Panthers Rugby Club plus you could take a look at our regular events, there are loads of them. Whatever it is, seek it out and try to take time for the simple things in 2019. I'll see you on the trails.
Ellie takes time out to dance, to practice, and to perfect her routines, her moves etc but how many of us spend the same time doing the things we love? Page 6

Ce l e a t i n g 10 y e a r s of business! 4th January 2008, at the beginning of the recession and working from a bedroom is where it all began for Kirsty Gascoigne and Suzanne Lucas, Directors of Chesterfield based recruitment agency Inspire Resourcing Ltd. “It’s strange looking back and remembering how difficult that first year was, when companies had to be so careful with their recruitment budget, but actually the recession only made us refine our skills further. It was so important to offer a solutions based service for our clients and candidates and 10 years on that ethos is still at the heart of Inspire”, says Suzanne Lucas. Suzanne & Kirsty
Whilst the last 10 years have been incredibly hard work, there has been lots of fun had along the way. “Some of my favourite memories include a little prank involving a fake parking ticket, the Christmas parties, moving into our current premises and a recent charity race night we hosted to raise money for the East Mids Air Ambulance Service, but honestly every day is good, we have a great team and wonderful clients that make it a pleasure to come to work each day.” says Kirsty Gascoigne. Inspire Resourcing is a multi-specialist agency with consultants specialising in office, industrial, sales & marketing, engineering and IT, and currently supply across Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and South Yorkshire. In 2014 they acquired a GLAA Licence (Gang Master Labour Abuse Authority) and in 2015 successfully gained ISO 9001:2015, demonstrating a commitment to quality and continuous improvement. Future plans include opening a Sheffield office, “opening a Sheffield branch has been on the agenda for a long time but 2019 will be the year it finally happens. We already actively operate in Sheffield and have a dedicated Sheffield consultant looking after our Sheffield based clients “says Kirsty. “Other plans for 2019 include a new and improved website and another charity event, which is really exciting,” says Suzanne. You’ll find Inspire Resouring at 79 Saltergate
The rest of the team is made of up Curt (Branch Manager), Mark (Engineering Consultant), Jack (Commercial Consultant), Dean (Sheffield Permanent Consultant), Nicole (Resourcer), Sabrina (Industrial Consultant), Kim (Payroll and Compliance Administrator) and Mia (Receptionist).

Keep It Local The impact of choosing a small independent business. Words: Paul Chapman Images: White No Sugar Productions & Totally Locally
In a few months’ time we exit the EU and I suspect we'll all be impacted in some way. The price of paper used for printing S40 Local has increased, the trees that make the paper are grown in the EU and the increases my printer is seeing are passed down the chain to businesses, S40 Local included. If our immediate economy is going to thrive, we need to carefully consider our purchasing decisions, so it seems ever more important to support our local businesses, our local economy and even, the wider UK. I’ve previously mentioned the ‘Tale of a Tenner’ video by White No Sugar Productions which was done for Totally Locally (hover your phone's camera over the quick code below to take you to the video on youtube - or google 'Tale of a Tenner') and it’s worth a watch. I plan to meet up with the team that run the Totally Locally scheme this year and find out more. The simple story is told opposite in pictures, basically someone introduces a tenner into a local business and it's then passed around between others before ending back where it started, it never leaves the immediate economy. Since I started S40 Local almost ten years ago it’s changed the way I think about the stuff we buy and what we can do to make a difference. Previously, if I needed something, I’d just buy it from the most convenient place, a large retail chain, a supermarket or a faceless internet site, whichever was easiest and/or cheapest.
Today things are different. Recently I needed new parts for my bike and rather than browse the internet I emailed my local bike shop, Igloo on Chatsworth Road. Rob came back to me with a price and could have the parts within the next couple of days. I called in to pick them up over the counter and had a chat, he was happy that I’d gone to him and I paid no more than I would online. Result - the profit generated stays in the local economy. Looking ahead, when I come to needing a new bike my decision process will be about weighing up whether to shop local or to purchase a local brand which supports local manufacturers. We have a growing choice nearby, Cotic Bikes are based in Calver, they love Sheffield, use steel for their frames and plough a percentage of turnover back into local bike projects via Sheffield based advocacy group, Ride Sheffield, Sonder bikes are the in-house brand of Alpkit, a small company based just off the M1 at junction 26 and Forme bikes are based in Derby. Ideally it would be great to buy from a local shop and support a local brand and I'll keep an eye out for options. Being a lad from Nottingham, every young child had a family member who worked at Raleigh bikes. I remember picking up a bike from the Raleigh factory shop with my uncle Ron, bikes made in the UK. It now means a lot to me to support UK brands where possible. Consider it a resolution, it's just one way I can make a small difference in 2019. The reason for the text is to try and encourage each and every one of us to consider where we might be able to make changes and help our immediate economy. Over to you.

ou don’t need to think for too long to come up with some benefits of doing sport. But finding a sport we love, and that fits in with our skills and our lifestyles can be a bit more difficult.
To try and help local children find their sport, the squash coaching team from Princes Sports Club, worked with Chesterfield School Sport Partnership (CSSP) to organise Squashfest 2018. The aim of Squashfest 2018 was to introduce squash to 160 local primary school children and give them each a chance to have a go. The event was delivered as ‘Junior 101’, which is one of England Squash’s new participation programmes. These participation programmes have been created in line with Sport England’s aims: ‘to encourage everyone, regardless of age, background, or level of ability, to feel able to engage in sport and physical activity’. Junior 101 aims to get more Children and Young People playing squash and having fun, whether in a school club or community setting. Jo Wallis, who coaches at Princes Sports Club, explained “We’re slowly changing the perception of squash. You don’t have to be fit to start: you can get fit and have fun by playing squash. Currently, most new players tend to come through family, friends of team players and club players”. “Squashfest 2018 aims to provide an opportunity for more local children to have fun on the squash courts, to give them a taster, and we hope many will come back to Princes Sports Club and continue their squash journey in our junior programme and begin a lifelong love of squash.” Nick Wall, the reigning British Junior Squash Champion, is based at the Hallamshire Squash Club in Sheffield. He took time out of his training schedule to attend Squashfest 2018. “I got into the sport through my Dad” explained Nick. “I started playing at three years old and through hard work and training have risen to the position of British Number One for my age (U19). “It’s great to see so many kids here and it would be even better to see many of them coming back after the event to pick up squash as a new sport. “Squash isn’t often seen as fun, it’s seen as competitive from the start, but it should be about enjoying what you do. Following the event kids will be able to come and give squash a try at three free coaching sessions, it’s a great offer and a really good way to be introduced to the sport, and to see if it’s for you before you join up.”
Emily, also from Brookfield School, and staff from CSSP delivered the sessions on the day. Coach John (Robbo) Robertson has represented England in the over 70s and also competes on the Master’s squash circuit. This gives the children a wide range of coaches to learn from. The schools attending Squashfest 2018 were; Old Hall Juniors, Brampton Primary, Cavendish Juniors, Highfield Hall Primary and Mary Swanwick School.
“I got into the sport through my Dad” explained Nick. “I started playing at three years old and through hard work and training have risen to the position of British Number One for my age (U19). Teacher Craig Ferreday from Mark Swanwick commented “it’s great to get kids involved in as many events and activities as possible and open their eyes to new opportunities. Squash is a sport many children don’t get access to, so it’s fantastic to see them here giving it a go. “We brought a group of children along to last year’s Squashfest and the children enjoyed it - we've also had the squash coaches from Princes Sports Club come out to our school to help children find their sport. Over the past year we’ve given children the chance to try parkour, boxing, triathlon as well as the usual sports, football, cricket and rugby, to offer them the best chance of finding a sport they enjoy." If your child didn’t get chance to come to Squashfest and they fancy trying squash, Princes are offering three free junior squash sessions* after school, on Tuesday and Wednesday. The children will be coached through the sessions and can go on to join the Junior Squash Club where the fun, coached sessions continue. It’s also worth noting that there is no need to be a member of Princes Sports Club to participate in the Junior Squash Club Programme. If you’re an adult and this has sparked an interest in taking part in squash or indeed racketball (bigger ball, bigger bounce, longer rallies); the friendly team at Princes would love to hear from you. At Princes Squash Club there are opportunities for you; whether you’re an absolute beginner or looking to get back into the sport. Contact Jo Wallis on 07815 574113 and *see advert for further details.
The team of coaches from Princes were Mike, Sean, Jo, John, & Michael & Harry (who are both Y13 Brookfield students). Please Mention S40 Local

If you’re thinking of having antiageing injections (also known as Botox, Azzalure or Bocouture to name a few), lip enhancements or non-surgical cosmetic rejuvenation, wouldn't you want a medically qualified person to carry out your treatment? Introducing Theresa Goldsmith (RGN, BA(hons), Independent Prescriber, MSc, PG Cert Aesthetic Medicine), a Registered Nurse for 25 years and owner and founder of TAG Aesthetics. Always looking for ways to deliver an innovative new service, in 2015 Theresa trained in aesthetics and introduced her company TAG Aesthetics with the driving aim to bring top class Aesthetics to Chesterfield. Most recently she achieved a distinction in the coveted Aesthetic Medicine Post Graduate Certificate at the Queen Mary University in London.
Theresa’s passion is to help people feel good about themselves and increase their self-confidence; that’s why she takes a holistic approach to aesthetic treatment and prides herself on creating a subtle and natural look for clients. Patients regularly say; ‘I feel so much fresher and nobody has an inkling that I’ve undergone a treatment.’ And it’s not just patients’ lives that Theresa is enhancing, TAG Aesthetics will be getting its own transformation in 2019. To reflect the growth of the business and complete holistic service that Theresa provides, TAG Aesthetics is rebranding as The Goldsmith Clinic. And the new name will be appearing at new, larger premises later in the New Year. If you are considering an aesthetic procedure in the new year here are just some of the services offered at TAG Aesthetics (soon to be The Goldsmith Clinic) for both men and women:
Theresa explains: “When people are considering their first aesthetic procedure, the marketplace can be overwhelming. Do your homework. Check the person who is performing your treatment is experienced and has a medical qualification such as, Registered Nurse, Doctor or Dentist. Just ask the question or check their qualifications on the NMC, GMC or BDA website. You really need to know that the person is able to fully support you and deal with any complication which, although rare, can occur.”
• Skin health and treatment for ageing skin, acne, rosacea and other skin conditions • Holistic facial rejuvenation and the ‘liquid facelift’ using dermal fillers and injections • Intravenous vitamin infusions to support wellbeing • Treatment to reduce excessive underarm sweating • Stretch mark reduction • Thread vein removal • Treatment to reduce and tighten stubborn areas of excessive fat • Treatments to the under-eye area to improve bags and wrinkles

From the coffee shop to the hairdressers… we have decided that Kip has become the talk of the town! We have all experienced a visit to the hairdressers and come away learning something. Sometimes just gossip, other times an insight into someone else’s life. Above the noise of the hairdryers and general hubbub, customers have to raise their voices somewhat, and this is exactly what happened to Jo’s aunt on her recent visit to her local hairdresser. The lady having her hair done in the chair next to her began a conversation about her grandson. We don’t know his name, but Gran was telling her stylist and anyone who’d listen, all about him and how worried she’d been about him 6 months previously. He was happy at school but difficulties with maths and spelling were beginning to take their toll. She talked about how she had seen her daughter become more and more concerned as he was ‘’feeling poorly’’ or his ‘’tummy hurt’’ on several occasions but a visit to the doctors showed nothing wrong with him. It became clear that he was avoiding school. Even a talk with the teacher didn’t shed any light on why he was so unhappy. The teacher admitted that he was struggling a bit with his Maths and English but wasn’t alone in that respect. She did add that his best friend was now on another maths table though. Gran told the stylist that her grandson had been become increasingly stressed about going to school and all her daughter’s attempts at home to help him had ended up in tears over the kitchen table and both of them quite miserable.
Gran said she had seen one of our Kip stories in a magazine and had decided to follow up with a phone call just to see if it might be of use to her grandson. She said the lady who took the call, Jo, was very friendly and helpful and offered a free assessment for her grandson just to measure what he could achieve and what he struggled with. Gran said she nervously took her grandson along, but Jo soon had her grandson chatting, laughing and showing her what he could do with great pride. Jo could tell what he couldn’t do from the assessment and offered to help him. Gran said after 6 months at Kip he was a changed boy, no longer dreading school, no longer afraid to have a go or worried about getting it wrong. He is thrilled with his ability to use what he’s learned at Kip, at school. She said the change in his confidence and self-esteem is amazing! The stylist had never heard of Kip but got chapter and verse from the happy Gran, everything from the free assessment to the individual lesson plans and biscuits! Jo’s aunt didn’t tell the Gran who she was but was very excited to pass on the good news! So a big thanks to all those grandparents out there who are spreading the word. If you have a grandchild needing help call Jo on 01246 220224 or 01629 56611 for a free assessment.

Chesterfield Rugby 100 Years This coming season sees the Chesterfield Panthers Rugby Club achieve it’s Centenary, with many events being organized in celebration of all they have achieved in that time. Words:Graham Bell - Hon. President CPRUFC Images: Chesterfield Panthers
The Briefest History 15 November 1919 Mr J.T.Todd of Blackwell and Mr W.Walton Pitt set about establishing Rugby Union in Chesterfield, what followed was a meeting in the Portland hotel on the 6 December 1919 when a Rugby Club was formed. 18 Men of widely varying backgrounds and social standing came together and the first firm plans were made for Chesterfield Rugby Football Club.
“We didn’t have a shirt, a pair of boots or a ball between us and what’s more we didn’t have a rugby field to play on”
Founder Member Harold Webb recalled “We didn’t have a shirt, a pair of boots or a ball between us and what’s more we didn’t have a rugby field to play on”. Early games and practice were played at various venues including an area of ground at Highfield and then Brampton on fields which are now Brookfield School. The players changed at this time in stables at the Terminus Hotel and bathed in two halves of a beer cask. The First Match Report (13 MARCH 1920) from the Derbyshire Times. “The Chesterfield and District club’s debut at Blackwell on Saturday against Burton-on-Trent ‘A’ side was a good start. The Chesterfield team did just as much as could be expected of them. That Burton won by 14 points to 3 points is not a discouraging result. The homesters led at the interval with a try by Colin Linathan, a Blackwell youth.” In 1923 the club split with Blackwell, to become Chesterfield Rugby Union Football Club. Many family names from those early days still support the club today. Thanks to the work of the Charles Shentall, J.W.Thompson and the Redfern/Short families the club acquired the grounds at Stonegravels for the princely sum of £1200 with the first match being played at Sheffield Road on the 8 October 1927.

Sport The club flourished during the late 1920s and until suspension due to the 2nd World War in 1939.
This growth of the club required more and better facilities and this was achieved with the move to Dunston Road in 2012.
During this period two former Chesterfield players progressed to play for England, Firsly, Prince Alexander Oblensky, whilst at Trent College and secondly Clarence Gilthorpe who played for Chesterfield before going on to play for Wasps, Royal Air Force, Coventry, Oxford University and England between 1938 and 1946.
The club was able to buy the Dunston site from Chesterfield Borough Council in 2010, after realizing the asset value of the Stonegravels site. After more than 20 years of negotiations and protracted planning issues the club finally sold the Stonegravels site for residential development to Miller Homes Limited.
After the war years the club re-established its self in 1946, playing in plain red shirts, the hooped shirts previously worn could not be purchased because of rationing.
Today
The club obtained its first clubhouse on the ground in 1953 with two tennis courts added in 1955. The club purchased a second pitch and training area in 1961 for the sum of £1250, once again the Short family connection made this possible. The club continued to grow with the 1970s being the most successful period in the club’s history to date. Floodlights were installed and became the envy of many other clubs. Having started in the late 1950s to encourage rugby coaching in local schools by the mid-1980s junior rugby was established with sides playing other local club juniors on Sunday mornings. The club now has more than 300 Mini and Junior members from 7 to 19 years of age. The Ladies Rugby Team, formed in 1993, will this year celebrate 25 years of Ladies Rugby at Chesterfield. This section has grown with the introduction of girls' rugby from junior level where boys and girls play together up to the age of under 13. The club now boasts junior and girl players representing the club at Notts, Lincs and Derbys and Midland Division at Junior level. With the juniors have come mums and dads, and grandmas and granddads.
The club now regularly field 2 senior sides, a ladies side, a girls side, mini and junior sides from Under 7’s to under 17’s. In addition, the “Panther Cub’s” (3 to 6-year olds) are enjoying the Sunday morning use of the new clubhouse and surrounding pitches. The community sports pitches forming part of the development at Dunston have now become the home of “Espial Football Club” and regularly host soccer matches each weekend. The club continues to improve and add to the facility at Dunston, this year floodlights were installed to pitch 2, car parking extended, and pitch-side paving added. The club encourages and welcomes use of their excellent new facilities by community and corporate groups. This use varies from NHS, teacher and business training to wedding receptions and childrens parties. As part of the “Centenary” an exhibition of the club’s history is being held at Chesterfield Museum from October to Christmas 2019. If you have a story to tell or memorabilia for display at the exhibition the club would love to hear from you.

PROBLEM: In the UK, some young women in our schools are finding it difficult to access sanitary products. RESULT: Tearful panic in the loo. Wadded up toilet roll. Anxious embarrassment. Missed lessons. Missed education. SOLUTION: A community led commitment to provide and keep stocked red boxes filled with sanitary products and spare pants. The Red Boxes will support disadvantaged young women throughout their entire period. “One in ten teenaged girls (aged 14-21) have been unable to afford or access period products. “But poverty isn’t the only issue, there are social and cultural reasons why products might not be available at home, some linked with the stigma that persists around menstruation” according to research from children’s charity Plan International UK. Walton ladies Christine Stephenson and Lynn Elliott (pictured) had previously become aware of period poverty in Africa at a WI meeting, but when Christine read a magazine article, she was horrified to find that there is a huge problem in our schools in this country and how the Red Box Project aimed to help. “We decided to become local coordinators for this project in our community to help support schools by filling a Red Box with sanitary products and spare pants and placing them in our local schools.” Page 38
“Christine and I started the scheme a couple of months ago and, with the help of family and friends, have implemented the Red Box Scheme in two local schools, St Mary’s High and Parkside. The project isn’t just for Secondary Schools; Junior Schools need help as well, so we plan to contact some in the New Year.” “In school the boxes are easily accessible through members of school staff, and young women can access the box contents, no questions asked and take the products away discretely in plain bags. “Some young people still find periods embarrassing, despite it being part of normal life for 50 per cent of the students in a school. Present statistics suggest that one in ten young girls misses two or three days from school due to this embarrassment or from simply not having access to sanitary products.” What can you do? To enable Christine and Lynn to continue to support our local young women and make sure their education isn’t disrupted by a period, they need to ensure a constant supply of products, so they can fulfill their commitment to keep the Red Boxes topped up with products. They are appealing to people in the local community to donate sanitary products and new pants or a donation of money if they feel able. You can do this by phoning Christine and Lynn on 07867 505239 or 07745 318847. You can also contact them by visiting their Facebook page Chesterfield Red Box Project and messaging them. If you’re involved with a local cause and would like support from the S40 community, please get in touch and we’ll help you spread the word.

Light Up The Night December saw Somersall's fourth annual lantern parade. Blessed with yet another dry night for the occasion, some very excited faces started from Walton Road and took the route past the dam. The familiar location looked truly glorious, lit by (battery-powered) candlelight marking the path and the procession of lanterns along the water's edge. Some very confused Canada geese raised their voices and considered joining the spectacle, but were discouraged by a group of on-looking local ducks. Revellers proceeded through the woods, the eeriness offset by some beautiful, luminous decorations hung from the trees. As always, photographer Helen Rowan snapped people passing the Christmas tree, capturing the stars of this year's show, including some impressive sea creatures and a cheerful snowman. Darkness gave way to the brilliance of the UV tunnel, and as beaming faces materialised from the glow, the warmth of Holymoorside Brass Band playing Christmas carols drifted across the park. The mood became less awestruck and increasingly jovial as everyone reached this much-loved common space. Groups formed as the pace slowed for tired little legs and quickened for those heading to the bar. The procession were rewarded with mince pies, hot chocolate and mulled wine, in conjunction with The Britannia Inn, and a special visit from a rather prestigious Santa ensured the children all had some sugar to keep them going. An ambience of timeless festivity was created by the brass band, and with a warm drink to stave off the winter night, it was surprising how cosy the vast, open space of the park could feel. The evening was yet another achievement for the Friends of Somersall Park, whose spirit again fuelled a joyful opportunity for local families to come together. My special appreciation extends to the young people who stewarded the event, offering guidance and smiles - seeing your demographic represented so positively was enough to warm the cockles on a December eve. The Spireite
John Pye
The team at Brampton Brewery never like to let the grass grow under their feet and have recently taken on The Spireite pub on Sheffield Road opposite the Chesterfield FC ground at the Proact stadium.
A hundred and fifty new jobs will be available in Chesterfield as national auctioneer John Pye opens its first auction site locally.
Brampton Brewery take on their 3rd pub
From FB: ' We are delighted to announce that effective from today (4 Jan) we have taken over the ownership of The Spireite Pub on Sheffield Road, Chesterfield. We are very excited about this new venture and have some great ideas for the pub going forward. A refurbishment plan for the pub has been agreed and so to make sure we can open the pub to its full potential we shall be closing the premises immediately to allow the refurbishment to take place. National Auction House Comes to Chesterfield
The 233,000 sq ft site was acquired by John Pye Property – a division of the wider John Pye Auctions group - to support the business’ continued growth and expansion. The new site will be the second largest in the John Pye portfolio and comes as a result of an increase in stock volumes from the company’s high street retail clients including DFS, John Lewis, Made.com and many more. Richard Reed, head of property at John Pye, said: “We are delighted to be able to support the wider John Pye group with the acquisition of our new Chesterfield site. To be able to complete such a complex transaction in just four weeks speaks volumes about the great team we have here, and everyone at the company is very excited for the opening of the new facility.” www.s40local.co.uk
The new site is prominently located on the A61, adjacent to Tesco Extra and Chesterfield Football Club. It has superb access to close by Sheffield and surrounding towns and is very close to Junction 29 of the M1 Motorway. The site, which is due to be fully operational by March 2019 will create up to 150 new jobs and will be developed further over the next three to five years. Adam Pye, managing director of John Pye said: “This expansion is a perfect example of our continued growth and ambition. Over the last five years, we have gone from strength to strength, and this new site takes our UK salesroom space to nearly one million sq ft nationwide. “We are always on the lookout for opportunities to expand our auction house network, and we are continuing to look for further sites in high-demand areas such as the north west. The launch of our new premises in Chesterfield is the perfect way to kick off 2019, which we hope will be another recording breaking year for John Pye.” Visit the website to find out more.

Garden Tips
1. Many people put their plot to sleep for the winter. They clear out the vegetables that have finished in the autumn and leave it empty doing nothing until the spring. But it is still possible to leave some root crops in the ground removing them when needed for the table. These include beetroot, carrots, parsnips and turnips. 2. Have you thought of covering your plot with a membrane? e.g. black plastic, weed control fabric or anything that removes light, perhaps even old carpet. This prevents weeds growing and much goodness leeching away out of the soil. 3. It is a good time to deep clean and sharpen all of the tools lying in the shed. A thin film of oil appropriately used is recommended for steel tools put away for the winter too. 4. Outdoor sowing broad beans is still possible if you choose a hardy variety like ‘Super Aquadulce’. 5. If you have a greenhouse or window sill it can give you a tremendous start to next year if, before the end of December you sow such things as peppers (sweet & chilli), tomatoes & onions from seed. 6. This is the time of year to begin to plan for next year, send off for the new season’s seed and nursery catalogues. Some time can also be usefully spent looking through the hundreds of company websites and searching the internet can find interesting and new varieties. Don’t be over-ambitious though – only plan for plants where there’s space, 7. Winter is the best time to dig heavy ground, incorporating manure or compost. If you have a decent sized area, don’t try to do it all at once - you’ve got a good couple of months to finish it all. 8. Keep everywhere clear of debris, which can harbour diseases and harmful organisms. But try not to be too fussy; old logs and pile of leaves tucked away somewhere are excellent over-wintering spots for essential wildlife. 9. Reduce the watering of houseplants and mist them regularly to stop them drying out in the central heating. The ideal is to keep them clustered together in an unheated but light room.
Winter Garden Tips
10. Make leaf mould at this time. Although some leaves begin to fall in September, the time when the bulk of fallen leaves are available is at the end of November and into December. Why not make a clamp with four posts and chicken wire to a container, put all of the leaves you can collect within it. This weed free soil conditioner is best spread on the ground later in the year.
