EDITORS LETTER Hello and welcome to the April edition of S41 Local Magazine.

As I write this month's editor's letter the sun is shining and the sky is clear and blue. I definitely picked the wrong day to be sat inside! It won’t be long now until the bikes are on the roof rack and we are, once again, cycling in the peaks and camping with the kids. I can’t wait!

Speaking of the Peak District, if you haven’t been to Thornbridge Hall yet, firstly, what are playing at? And secondly, it’s free entry throughout March so you really have no excuse not to visit one of the Peak District's most beautiful places.

I absolutely adore this month’s spring-themed front cover by local mum, florist and artist Forest. Several people have said it would make a wonderful wallpaper and I am inclined to agree. Be sure to read Forest’s interview in this month’s edition and check out her socials for more beautiful illustrations and floral arrangements. The team at Rosewood Wealth Management have launched an appeal to support the citizens of Ukraine. Please do read the article and help if you can.

I had a coffee and a chat with three Mexican hockey players this month who are here playing for Chesterfield Hockey Club. I loved interviewing these guys and seeing just how happy, but cold they were. They must have mentioned the fact that England is cold about ten times, haha! I don’t think it’s been too bad lately, but then again; I’m not comparing it to Mexico’s climate! For my fellow theatre lovers, Ashgate Heritage Arts have a new show starting called ‘The Crooked Spire Musical.’ It’s a murder mystery set in the 14th century and sounds right up my street! I am very much looking forward to checking it out. For the jazzy ones amongst us, LATHCPEN will be playing at Spital Arts. It will be an evening of Django Reinhardt inspired jazz. I have been to several Spital Arts shows and they haven’t disappointed me yet. A terrific night out and something different from the norm...

Before I wish you all a very happy April, I just want to say a happy birthday to our youngest Florie who turns four this month. You are special, you are loved. And a farewell to our springer spaniel, Zak. You were special, you were loved. Have a wonderful start to the spring season and I hope you enjoy reading the magazine as much I enjoy creating it. Peace, love and positivity

rom the walls of Brookfield School to shop fronts, weddings and London Fashion Week. This month's front cover artist and local mum of three, Forest, has a lot to be proud of. I was lucky enough to squeeze into her busy schedule for a coffee and a chat about all things floral and arty.

Forest, many of our previous front cover stars knew from an early age that they were going to be an artist. Was this the same for you?

Well, both of my parents are artists and I have been illustrating for as long as I can remember. It’s just what we do as a family. Pete (Pete Barber, Dad from UrbanCanvas.co.uk) took me to festivals, where he was working, such as Bearded Theory, and I loved it. I’ve just always known that I wanted to earn a living being creative. Sounds like a cool childhood to me. Can you remember the first piece you ever sold?

I think I was at school and my teacher wanted to buy it, but I gave it her for free. It was a collage piece, I think it's still in her office at Brookfield.

How old were you when realised you could make a good living by following your creative passion?

I didn’t really know I was ever going to make money at it, it was just something that I had to do! When I started being creative with flowers and posting pictures online of my arrangements, people started messaging me asking to buy them. I was just doing it for fun, and it just really exploded! This was about three years ago, I've now honed my craft and am really enjoying the weddings I’m doing, especially since the restrictions have lifted. That’s great to hear and very inspirational for our young readers. Tell me about London Fashion Week, you were involved in that, weren’t you?

I was, I did a set design during the pandemic. They weren’t doing runways so I created sets out of flowers so they could use them in the production. I really enjoyed it. From Brookfield to London Fashion week! That’s quite the journey. Who inspires you? You can’t say your parents, sorry mum and dad. Page 6

Alexander McQueen, Vivien Westwood... I thought I would go down the fashion route, I quite liked the catwalk. You can create anything for the model to wear and it’s a piece of art, unique. Fabric is just so versatile. Textiles are where fashion and fine art meet. What’s the highlight of your journey so far?

It has to be being on set, that’s where I want to be really. I love photoshoots and being part of a team of creatives all sharing and making something special together, so, more set designs please. If you could work with anyone in the world, who would it be?

To be honest one of my favourite florists is Anna from Swallows and Damsons, her work is amazing and luckily I get to freelance with her regularly! But I also LOVE the idea of working on set designs for Elle Decor, Vogue Living or similar design companies doing set designs and large scale installations. So, what’s next for Forest the Florist?

Well, I have a studio on my friend's farm... It’s not Adam’s Happy Hen’s, is it?

No, but Adam is a good friend of mine. We had dinner with him last night! I work from a shipping container, it’s very cold, but it works, and I can fit all my stuff in it. I am currently kitting out an out-building where I live, and I will be able to host clients as soon as this May. It’s very exciting and I can’t wait. Of course, we have Mother’s Day coming up so get your orders in now people, and my wedding calendar is filling up fast! It’s great to meet someone like Forest who has found her purpose and is living her passion. I absolutely love our floral front cover and it’s the perfect illustration to depict spring as it emerges. Forest is taking orders for Mother’s Day and events bookings. The best way get in touch with her is through her socials and via email: e: forest.inkandearth@gmail.com inkandearth.studio www.inkandearthstudio.org

LEJOG

Not French for 'a run' English for Land's End to John O'Groats Words: Paul Chapman Images: Andy Hibberd (Leading Imagery Photography)

Page 10

www.s41local.com

I

love someone who's up for a challenge, so when I met Andy Hibberd, if I'd had a cap on, I'd raise it to him! He's riding LEJOG (that's Land’s End to John O'Groats – 840 miles), which includes riding the height of Everest plus some, so pretty impressive … BUT! He's not taking the usual ten days. His target is less than 50 hours, non-stop! It was originally a solo attempt, but he now has the support of Paul Sorrell, who's been training alongside Andy for the last year, oh and it's been moved from 2021 to 2022 for reasons I'm sure you'll be aware of.

"Paul will be someone to talk to, although I'm likely to fall in a heap at the side of the road as he bores me to sleep!" So, who is this chap, Andy Hibberd? I met him through a What's App group request, and for starters, he was a Royal Marine and Royal Navy Commando, who left in 2009 to set up his photography business, Leading Imagery, based at Clay Cross.

Please Mention S41 Local

Like all Royal Marines, Andy spent his time in the same basic training that all Marines undertake and in over ten years in the services, it has taken him to 26 countries, taking in 5 Operational Tours. In 2002, he was serving in Northern Ireland in a role where he was working alongside a front-line photographer; there is one assigned to each unit. "The role of front-line photographer is to work within the HQ element of a Commando Unit", explains Andy, "to portray what's happening and also capture photos from all manner of use including Intelligence, Media and ultimately recording historical actions." Andy went through the eight-month training at RAF Cosford to gain his photography qualifications, which saw him promoted before being shipped back to Iraq to support the Commando unit. "After leaving the military, I found my love for cycling again, first on the mountain bike, then road riding and the challenges it brings. I started looking for longer rides, 300km, 10k feet of climbing, 200-mile sportives (rides you pay to do with a planned route and feeding stations etc., fun, social challenges), that sort of thing. "I'd always fancied LEJOG, but I wasn't interested in the usual multiday ride. I wanted a challenge, two days, which became the under 50 hours target. The record is 43 hours.

Page 11

Heroes "We'll need to average 17mph to cover the 840 miles and 30,000 feet of climbing, and I've been working with a coach, Ken Bryson from Total Endurance based in Aberdeen, to keep my heart rate in target zone two, less than 140 bpm for the duration." Andy aims to raise £10,000 split equally between the Royal Marines Charity and Dementia Awareness, charities close to his heart. "I had a friend who had dementia, it was horrific to see them suffer. It's best to let them just be as happy as they can." With his military background, Andy pulled a few strings to get people on board. A charity dinner on 8 April 2022 at Santo's Higham Farm & Restaurant will see Gary from Duratus UK and Craig Williams Ultra talking, both former servicemen who worked alongside Andy, there will also be an auction at this event with lots including a day at the Commando Training Centre in Lympstone and a one-off sketch by Tommy Hibberd of six times Olympic Champion Sir Chris Hoy signed by Sir Chris. Also planned on Sunday 3 April is The Ashover Charity 100km Sportive sponsored by Bainbridge's Hair, which takes in parts of the Peak District with a final push to Beeley. Alongside this, they'll be a 10km ride at the Ashover showground for Families. For details, Google' Ashover-Charity-100km'. Andy enrolled the services of Ken Bryson, who coached Dean Stott, another former serviceman who did the Pan America's world record-breaking ride in 2018, and Andy is somehow finding the time to ride five days a week, run a business and still spend some time with his family. He does admit to having an excellent support team around him and a very understanding wife! All this was fine during the lockdown when he had more free time, but he finds that he's starting to feel the pressure, "there is an expectation growing, and I'm accountable for the outcome, the time on the road and the turbo trainer is feeling real as the event approaches," says Andy. The start date is scheduled for the week commencing 18 June 2022, whichever two days offer the best weather window, the original event was planned for 2021, but COVID put this back 12 months. As we chat, the following weekend for Andy involves a 170-mile ride with an overnight stay and then another 170 miles back the following day. He needs people to support him on Saturday. They drive back, swap over, and two others help him on the return leg. It was clear how appreciative Andy was of these guys. Without them, this challenge simply wouldn't be happening. Page 12

There are an important bunch of local businesses who have stepped up as sponsors as well, so a shout out to each of them; Liam from Lords Roofing & Sons (Wingerworth), Team Boot Camp (Shropshire), Grinsty Train (across the UK), Middlebrook Transport (Alfreton), Paint & Bodywork Services (Chesterfield), Sheaf Marble (Sheffield), Buzzbox Fitness (Chesterfield), Nix Cycles (Sutton in Ashfield) and Leading Imagery (Clay Cross). Along with a whole host of individuals and businesses who has supported everyone in one way or another over the last year. Andy loves a target, his training is a massive commitment, and this isn't just a run of the mill charity challenge. Anyone who is using the Tour of Cambridgeshire Cycling Festival's Time Trial and then a 100-mile sportive the day after as training has to be pretty serious about achieving his goals. As I type, Andy has raised £8,300 of his £10k target, so he isn't far off. If you want to donate either directly or by attending the charity night or Ashover event, the details can be found by accessing the Facebook group listed or on the gofundme website. LEJOGCC21 www.gofundme.com - 'search lejogcc21' I can’t heap enough praise on Andy for his effort and wish him every success in June. Hopefully we can catch up again later in the year and see how things went. ‘Per Terram’, by land as the Marines would say.

CAN YOU HELP US TO PROVIDE AID FOR THE DISPLACED PEOPLE OF THE UKRAINIAN CONFLICT?

D

ue to the current invasion of Ukraine nearly one million people have been displaced with ~ 600,000 already leaving their homeland to find refuge in other countries. The vast majority left with only what they could carry and with no specific destination to go to: families - elderly, children, pets - leaving their lives behind to seek safety. Rosewood is working with a logistics company, on behalf of an Eastern European led charity appeal, to support displaced citizens from Ukraine crossing the neighbouring borders. They are arranging to transport much needed, essential items direct to those that need it the most.

We will be offering our offices as a drop off point and if you can help in any way, we would be extremely grateful. Our office hours are Monday to Friday 9am-5pm. All basic items, excluding fresh food and money, would be thankfully accepted, and sent onwards at the earliest opportunity. Please note that we will not be taking any monetary or fresh food donations. If you wish to make a monetary donation, organisations such as The British Red Cross, Unicef or International Rescue Committee have dedicated appeals already set up.

THESE MEXI-CANS PLAY HOCKEY!

H

Words: Simon Paterson Images: Chesterfield Hockey Club

ow does one go from playing hockey in Mexico City to playing for the Chesterfield Hockey Club and living in Brampton? The answer is: message the manager on Facebook and ask if you can play him. Job done.

Jorge, Alex and Memo are, according to them, “cold all the time, it is just so cold in Chesterfield.” When I heard that Chesterfield Hockey Club had signed three players from Mexico, I just had to know their story. I met up with the players and coaches at Koo for a coffee and a very loud chat! Gentlemen, where in Mexico are you from?

Jorge: Memo and me live in Mexico City and Alex lives in Mexicali, in the north. Is hockey a popular sport in Mexico?

Jorge: No, there are only three hockey pitches in Mexico! Mexico is all about football.

Alex: I have to take a three-hour flight to the pitch! I do this every two to three weeks. Sam (coach): There are more than three hockey pitches in Chesterfield alone. We play on the one at St Mary’s School. How did you guys end up playing hockey in a small, almost, northern town in England?

Rob (club chairman): A Facebook message. We put a general Facebook post out looking for players, assuming we would get players to message us from Derbyshire, Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire etc... out of the blue I get a message from Mexico. I had to double-check that they played hockey in Mexico. I did my research and it turns out that they not only play hockey, they are amazing at it as well!

What level does Chesterfield Hockey Club play at? Jorge: We play in the Yorkshire Premier League, so it is a good level. The club has a very young team so we add a bit of experience to the side and help out with the young ones. Rob: The kids love them. They are always smiling and happy. What do you guys like most about living in Chesterfield? Page 20

Jorge: The weather! I am joking. It is so cold all the time! Memo: We are freezing.

Alex: We like the Britannia pub. Strong Bow Dark Fruits! Jorge: The people are so friendly here. I have made some good friends and the blue-eyed girls, haha! We love the blue eyes. Mexico, no blue eyes!

Memo: The Indian restaurant is great (The Gulab, Chatsworth Road) and the hockey pitches. You have a lot. If you could bring one thing from Mexico to Chesterfield, what would it be? Alex: My car. I miss driving. I love my car. Memo: The sun and the food.

Jorge: Memo is a chef. He studied it and is very, very good.

We are bit thin on the ground in Chesterfield for authentic, Mexican dishes. If any of our readers fancy opening a Mexican restaurant, please get in touch with Memo! I’d appreciate it. CHC is also running England Hockey's "Hockey Heroes" program again this May and it's a great way to introduce kids (aged 5-8) to the world of team sport in a fun, safe way!

Hockey Heroes is designed to promote physical wellbeing, getting outdoors to enjoy sport and has an interesting ‘super hero’ twist so if you know anyone with a little one, why not get them to come and give it a try!

Chesterfield Hockey Club has four men’s teams, three ladies, under 10’s, under 12’s, under 14’s, under 16’s and veterans over 40’s. So, there is no excuse for not popping down to practice and trying out the wonderful sport at one of the oldest clubs, in England (established 1899). They practice at St Mary’s School and would love some of our readers to get involved. For more information go to: Chesterfield Hockey Club

'SNAPP-IT'

Smart-health at your fingertips. A new, locally developed selfharm/suicide prevention mobile app for Young People (15-19yr). Text & Image: Jason Cotton

I

n May 2019, we caught up with Jason Cotton and Fraser Longford who established MenTalk, a local charity offering face to face support sessions for those suffering with poor mental health, raising awareness, breaking down stigma, and getting men to talk.

just incredibly uplifting. Finding out from a parent that their child had planned to end their own life but having sat and watched us in assembly that morning had found the courage to speak out to them instead - it’s stuff like that which just breaks you."

Jason described how the energy in the room would change during these meetings ‘as men would turn up at crisis point, desperately needing to be heard and understood without fear or judgement, knowing that what’s said in the room - stays in the room and through their courage and strength, would arrive broken but walk out as warriors’.

Jason mentioned that a few weeks later having delivered a talk at Chesterfield College, he noticed a young lad sat all by himself and so went up to chat, explaining what he does and asking him how things were going. Jason explains, "he said things at home were bad, his girlfriend had dumped him, he was drinking and smoking heavily, he couldn’t sleep and was now failing his exams and feeling completely overwhelmed with stress. He said he needed help, but his anxiety stopped him reaching out, the fear of being seen and bullied had stopped him taking down a number from a poster and knowing his mum checks his bag had stopped him from taking a crisis card - he was ready to give up. He then said he had to dash asking me if I could do something to help to which I replied, ‘yeah of course, there’s always something that can be done’. He then said, ‘do you promise?’ which really took me by surprise. After what seemed a lifetime, I replied, ‘yes ok, I promise’. The following week the UK went into lockdown."

With five community hero awards and everincreasing volumes, Men-Talk teamed up with Hayley Oxer to launch an online sister group called ‘Broken Beauty’ which provided the community with additional self-harm/suicide prevention support throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, helping 100s of men and their families via zoom, facetime sessions and 121 messages, sharing the power of community spirit through its darkest times. Around the same time, the team also looked at helping our younger generation by visiting local schools and colleges delivering life-experiencing, motivational talks to help raise self-awareness. Jason explains "the talk at Brookfield School was such a rollercoaster of emotions and changed our lives forever. Speaking to an assembly of over 200 students was just unreal, as they listened intently you could hear a pin drop with each young face telling a unique and personal story, many of which were hiding real, emotional pain. Watching young Bradley Littlewood then deliver an inspiring, motivational speech followed by an ovation was Page 24

Working from home, Jason kept thinking about what the young lad had said to him. "It sounds like a cliché," he explains "but a few weeks later I had this dream about building this self-help digital app which gives users a platform to access all the contacts, services, and self-help knowledge available, via their smartphone. A readily available source of information which young people use discreetly and without fear, taking the anxiety out of taking action."

www.s41local.com

In partnership with public health and children’s services, the team have just completed a successful one year pilot delivery of 'snapp-it' to over 250 pupils across schools and colleges in Chesterfield, Erewash and the High Peaks. Jason comments "we kept the project quiet to ensure the best and most natural response. With no promotional campaign or previous awareness of ‘snapp-it’, it was exciting to be introduced to the students who knew pretty much nothing about us, who sat and listened as we started talking, and to see their reaction, it was really cool. Real-life people sharing real-life experiences, standing up and talking openly to them. Kids are smart and they want the truth so there are no boring slideshows or uncompassionate lecturing, we know what it feels like, we understand what they may be going through, and we just want to help them live happy and fulfilling lives. As a group we connect, and it just works and to then hand out free smart devices for them to keep forever is always a winner."

mobile app stores and tons of insightful video links of local and national health-care service providers. Through an engaging, intuitive icon driven menu, the user can auto-dial a helpline, auto-send a crisis SMS, auto-create an email to your school nurse, get directions to your nearest A&E, GP surgeries, pharmacies, and sexual health clinics with instant access to all the emergency services, 999, 111 NHS plus local mental health and physical health facilities such as gyms, sports, and leisure centres. There’s localised bus, taxi and trains services and mind and body wellbeing programmes - to help you lose weight, to stop smoking, to getting active plus helpful information on alcohol awareness, employment and finance, foodbanks, youth projects, training courses, apprenticeships and volunteer action groups, motivational speakers, spiritual life science and self-awareness skills, ASMR relaxations and lots of high quality, mindsoothing meditations to help manifest calm in your world. With an additional 300+ sections dedicated to understanding health conditions such as anxiety, depression, eating disorders, bullying, abuse, self-harm, bereavement, addictions, relationships, behavioural, sexual health, gender identity, personality disorders, discrimination, disabilities, young carers, family problems, housing and money, COVID-19 there’s support from over 50+ local and national charities - there’s plenty of fun stuff too. "Our young people need our help and so by reaching out and intervening early in years 11, 12 & 13, we highlight the importance of maintaining great mental, emotional, physical, sexual health - healing the mind and body - helping to prevent harm and saving lives," says Jason. Having already achieved two community finalist awards in 2021, the team can now set their sights high with a plan to deliver into more schools and colleges across Derbyshire. To continue this great work, the team need support from the Community. A donation of £10 will sponsor a young person ensuring they are reached and supported with free 'snapp-it' smart devices and access to all services. "We look forward to the future," Jason finishes.

The free 'snapp-it' smart-devices come in the form of wearable wristbands, lanyards, smartcards and phone badges and offer a 32GB USB memory stick so students can store their schoolwork or create your own personalised wellbeing toolkit. Snapping the cleverly concealed QR code takes you to the snapp-it mobile application which provides over 4,500 contextual links for phones, sms, emails, websites, forums, GPS maps, social media pages,

And the winner is? LATERLIVINGNOW! Local independent equity release specialists, Laterlivingnow!, has been named 'Winner' of the 'Best Financial Adviser - 5 or fewer advisers' category at the ‘Equity Release Awards 2022’, the 'Oscars' of the industry. Laterlivingnow!, as the only Equity Release specialist company based in Chesterfield but serving clients throughout the UK, claimed 'Best Financial Adviser - 5 or fewer advisers' at the Equity Release Awards ceremony in London in January. Simon Chalk – the founder, said, "this award is testament to the hard work, integrity, and expertise of our small privately owned firm," Kaye Wallis – Head of Marketing added, "the judging panel were clearly impressed by the first-class service we offer our clients and our reputation for giving clear, appropriate advice and guidance". Simon doesn't intend to let the company become too big for its boots. "We are small, independent of every lender and enjoy being so. The big national firms that advertise on TV and the internet are often promoting their own plans and simply cannot match us for personal service or choice".

Not being tied to any single lender, Laterlivingnow! can access the 'whole of market', helping source the most favourable plans from over 700 available today, and secure attractive fixed interest rates for life. With interest rates widely reported as due to rise, many homeowners over 55 are taking advantage by releasing equity now. With inflation making everyone's living costs rise, Laterlivingnow! has experienced an increase in enquiries from homeowners over 55 looking to cover day-to-day living expenses, or to help out the family. The pandemic has led to people spending more time at home, encouraging them to make home improvements, extend living space, or adapting a room to become a home-office. Laterlivingnow! offers a FREE initial consultation to help homeowners decide if an equity release lifetime mortgage could be right for them, as it may not always be the best option.

Customer delight is evidenced by 88 Google Reviews - each one an impressive '5-star *****' rating, with 166 reviews averaging 4.9 out of 5.0 on VouchedFor - the leading site for reviews of professional firms. This has helped Laterlivingnow! gain a listing in the Sunday Times 'Top Rated Advisers 2022' guide. Simon said “more and more advisers and big brands are entering the equity release market, making it difficult for customers to know who to trust with such a big decision. Taking out a Lifetime Mortgage can affect entitlement to certain benefits and impact on future choices in paying for care. We believe that our small team possess the best combination of experience, knowledge and skills to help guide people at what can be a critical point in their lives.” Page 26

With a choice of a home visit, phone call, or video call (e.g., Zoom, WhatsApp), Laterlivingnow! can guide you through this important area, and of course, you’re welcome to invite along family or a trusted friend. If you have any questions about equity release, please call Laterlivingnow!

Hipper District Girlguiding As clubs, groups and societies start to meet up face to face again Beckie Jones gives us an update on our local Rainbows, Brownies and Girl Guides. If your youngsters want to get involved, please take a look and get in touch with your local group. Where and when do Rainbows, Brownies and Guides meet?

Groups in the Hipper District meet in the Walton area, there are groups on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings. What do we do?

We introduce girls to a world of new opportunities, challenges and fun. Girls go along to camps, holidays, day trips and sleepovers. They get together with their friends at regular meetings where they learn new hobbies, get creative, develop skills and have outdoor adventures. As well as trying activities in their meetings, girls choose badges related to things they want to know more about. Based around having fun, Girlguiding is modern, exciting and helps girls to develop confidence. Do you go on trips?

Yes, we regularly have events which girls can attend outside their usual meetings, one night sleepovers for Rainbows, weekend camps for Brownies and lots of more adventurous activities for Guides including paddle boarding, outdoor cooking and climbing. We also have days trips to different places where Rainbows, Brownies and Guides are invited to come along with their unit and meet girls from other units and sections for a day of fun!

My daughter has additional needs, can she still join Girlguiding? Yes, of course!! We have wellbeing and adjustment plans to ensure everyone is included in Girlguiding. Lots of our leaders already have personal, professional or guiding experience supporting girls and young women who have SEND (Special Education Needs and/or Disabilities), come and join the fun! How can I get my daughter involved?

Whether it's Rainbows (4-7), Brownies (7-10), Guides (10-14) or Rangers (14-18), start her Girlguiding journey by heading to www.girlguiding. org.uk Begin by registering her interest and finding out about units in your area. Adventure, fun and friendship starts here. Girlguiding is unique

We offer a safe, welcoming girl-only space for girls and young women to try new things, help other people and discover their passions and talents. All while having fun with a ready-made group of friends! We're dedicated to girls leading the way – they choose the activities, challenges and events that inspire them, and our volunteers support them to make it happen. Because girls shape and lead everything we do, we know that we're offering the best opportunities and experiences for girls today. For more info contact Beckie on 0774 243 0750.

MENTAL CHANGES DUE TO AGING Words: Philip Norcliffe (Handle With Care Seniors) Image: Adobe Stock

T

he greatest fear in most, older, people is the fear of Dementia either of oneself or of someone who is loved. So much is written and misunderstood about dementia in all its forms. Most of us have witnessed the condition in someone close. My 50 year plus nursing and teaching career has brought me into close contact with many elderly (my speciality). The following is a very brief overview of the elderly and their care. About two in 100 people aged between 65 and 69 have dementia, affecting memory, language, thinking, behaviour, and problem-solving abilities. A very small number have dementia before 65 years and 7% of those over the age of 65. This figure rises to one in five for those aged between 85 to 89. (Alzheimers research UK). To put it another way 80% of us will achieve advanced old age without Dementia.

For those with the condition and their families it is a truly awful series of mainly slow, progressive, changes. At the end of this article I will discuss some of the latest thinking on how we may reduce the likelihood of Dementia and offer further reading suggestions.

Often mistaken for dementia is a natural age related condition called mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Most people in advancing years, do have a slower speed of retrieval (hunting for words). A slower reaction time, sometimes they more easily lose the thread of a thought or conversation or become distracted, in MCI these symptoms do not significantly impact daily living and are often a perfectly natural occurring process of aging with NOTHING to worry about, but talk to a doctor if you or someone close to you is having concerns about the significance of the changes. The person may undertake a mini mental test to try to determine the onset of the condition. Page 30

A common effect of getting older is an increase in loneliness and isolation aggravated by the recent pandemic some have become confined to their own home. According to Age UK ‘more than a million older people go for more than a month without speaking to a friend, neighbour or relative. This may be brought on by bereavement, frailty, sensory loss or increasing debility. The isolation can lead to loss of confidence, lowered self esteem, reduced mobility and a feeling of being trapped. Depression may often result. Recourse to medication, whilst useful for some is, in my opinion, counter- productive, leading to some side effects including falls, confusion, dizziness, headaches and further isolation, if in doubt see your G.P. Since the pandemic some people may be fearful to venture out of their door due to anxiety resulting in further social isolation. Day time television and dire adverts further sap a persons energy. Many older people say to me ‘there is no fun in getting old’ but they usually ENJOY socialising when they feel safe, respected with no rushing and the opportunity to talk and be listened to. Seek opportunities to explore interaction with like-minded people who share an interest, be it music, humour, hobbies a shared history or experience. My day centre, as well as others; give an opportunity for individuals to gain time outside the home in a sheltered, welcoming, respectful environment, offering respite for themselves and others, we see people blossom, regaining spirit and focus, which builds confidence and feeling of self worth.

FOSWPPP The Friends of Stamford Way Play Park Project have been working since September 2021 to provide all new equipment for the play park behind Stanford Way and the end of Bowland Drive. Chris Collard explains, “The plan is not only to provide this new facility but also to clean up and enhance the surrounding park area as much as possible, the present park together with the rubber tarmac, is nearing the end of its useful life.

“The care and maintenance of the play park equipment together with that of the surrounding area will hopefully become an ongoing community responsibility that will promote a much-needed sense of post-Covid local community. We need to get out there with spades, rakes and sturdy backs!” There will be fundraising events to reach our target of £5,000, which amounts to 10% of promised match funding. They also have a justgiving page below, where any donations are most welcome.

Garden Tips

APRIL GARDEN TIPS

Words: Transition Chesterfield Images: Robert Nixon Betts

It should be properly spring and noticeably warmer by the time you read this. We've had a generally mild winter where lots of garden pests will have survived, so keep an eye open for them. On the plus side, there should be lots of appropriate predators and more birds to add their song to the dawn and evening chorus. If you haven't already done so, plant all seed potatoes. They are traditionally planted on Good Friday, but with Easter being mid-April means that remaining maincrop varieties should be planted by now. Remember that most types are frost-tender and may need some protection if the overnight temperature threatens to drop below zero. Lots of vegetables (and many annuals and herbs) can be sown now - check the seed packets. They will mostly be hardy types (carrots, beetroot, radish, parsnips etc.) and can go directly into the soil, but that may depend on if you've had the chance to prepare the beds for them. There's still a chance of late frosts - never sow into frozen soil. If you're not confident about growing things from seed, many seedlings will be sold in garden centres. These will have been raised in a benign environment. They won't appreciate going straight outside, especially if it's chilly, so they need to be slowly acclimatised by being protected at night – but don't keep them in a heated house. Seeds for tender vegetables can be sown under cover: tomatoes, courgettes, squashes, peppers and so forth. If they need watering, it is better to stand the trays in shallow water until the soil's surface appears damp; spraying from above can flatten the delicate seedlings. Again, you can buy young plants from garden centres, but they can be pretty expensive for what you get, plus it's far more satisfying to grow things from scratch.

Page 34

www.s41local.com

If you are planning a new strawberry bed this year, now is the time to save space and dig in some organic matter such as manure to give these productive fruit crops an excellent start. Think about ordering some strawberry plants or runners to be planted next month. Mulching with compost is by far the best way to feed your garden, but if you can't produce enough or haven't got a good source, most established plants will appreciate some general fertilisers spread around above where their roots will be and gently forked in – don't overdo it and damage the roots themselves. If you only have a little compost, either reserve it for your hungriest plants or use it to cover a thin scattering of fertiliser. As the days warm, anything in pots will need to be watered more often, especially houseplants, which should be moved away from places where they are in direct sunlight. Start including a weak feed, increasing to full strength as new growth sprouts. If you have fruit trees or shrubs, their blossom may be damaged by frost, so try to protect them; this is more important for things like apricots or peaches, which are more vulnerable. Larger trees will, to some extent, provide their own micro-climate, so they will only suffer minor damage (depending on the severity of the frost) and can be left to take their chances. Lawns should be growing faster now, so they may require more frequent and lower cuts. You can also repair any patches that have appeared over winter by sowing seed into them; loosen the soil a bit first and rake the surface. Protect any newly sown areas from pigeons. There isn't a month when you shouldn't be weeding, but it's much more important if the weather is mild!

Performance

To Barrow Hill & Beyond! With the Phoenix Band Phoenix Concert Band, a Chesterfield-based community wind band, is proud to celebrate 21 years of providing the local community with the enjoyment of making and listening to live music. During the lock-down period, like many music groups, they embraced the challenges of rehearsals over zoom and emerged as a bigger and stronger ensemble.

Since their return to live rehearsals, they have performed several successful concerts and are busy preparing for a more ambitious event at a much bigger and more exciting venue. Set against a backdrop of steam locomotives at Barrow Hill Roundhouse, they will be taking the audience on a ‘Journey to the Cosmos’ with a space-themed programme, which will include music such as Guardians of the Galaxy, Star Trek, Journey Through Orion and many more.

The concert will take place on Saturday 7th May commencing 7.30 pm. In advance, tickets will be £8 (£4 for children) and £10 cash on the door. They are available from the beginning of April details of how to obtain can be found on the website www.phoenixband.net, the band’s Facebook page, or by telephoning 07729 951815. A supply will also be available to purchase at the Tourist Information office in Chesterfield

RED HOT CHILLI PIPERS

THURSDAY 26 APRIL 2022 ALBERT HALL NOTTINGHAM There has never been anything quite like The Red Hot Chilli Pipers, from their formation in 2002 and a cameo appearance at T in the Park in 2004 with the Darkness to opening the main stage in their own right in 2014. The past fifteen years have seen the Red Hot Chilli Pipers become the most famous bagpipe band on the planet…ever! In June 2019, the Red Hot Chilli Pipers released a new studio album entitled "Fresh Air". An exciting fusion of brand-new songs and carefully selected covers. Many of the songs include lead vocals in a new departure for the Red Hot Chilli Pipers. Some of the highlights are "Leave the Light On", featuring Tom Walker on vocals. Leonard Cohen's "Hallalujah" and "Shut Up and Dance" from the American band Walk the Moon feature the incredibly talented singer Chris Judge on vocals. The Crooked Spire Musical A thrilling musical murder mystery set in 14th century Chesterfield. This family-friendly show revolves around the story of John, a carpenter who has travelled from York to help with construction of St Mary and All Saints Church spire.

Tragically, the master carpenter is killed and John is accused of the murder. As he gets closer to the truth further murders are committed and John’s life is in danger. John is helped along the way by new friend, Walter, the brother of a local seamstress, Katherine, who has caught John’s eye.

But will our hero survive and justice prevail? Will John win the heart of a good Chesterfield lass? Come and see for yourself at a unique opportunity to see this home-grown ‘West End musical’ directed by Jake Smith who has worked on Sting’s ‘The Last Ship’ and a tour of Sleepy Hollow.

Ashgate Heritage Arts was formed by Chesterfield musicians Martin Coslett and Peter Gray, together with writer, Mary Hennessy from Buxton, in order to bring history to life through exciting live musical theatre performances.

The cast of The Crooked Spire includes established TV and film actors such as Gerard Fletcher from Netflix’s The Crown and Bartlett in BBC’s Get Even and John Conway, from the film The World’s End, directed by Edgar Wright. Eleven year old singing and acting sensation, Eddie Waller, from Chesterfield has been cast in one of the starring roles. “I feel very lucky to have been cast in the role of Walter. It’s a fantastic opportunity to learn from some professional actors. It’s a great show too, with some catchy songs,” Eddie enthused.

on the club which seemed to go against the clubs own, now infamous, “5 year plan” to get into the Championship. Then the rot set in.

Words & Images: Michael South

O

n the 11 May 2015, just shy of seven years ago he left us all heartbroken… but now he's back!

Thursday 10 February was a great day to be a Spireite as Paul Cook was officially announced as James Rowes replacement. "I would not have dropped out of the Football League for any other team in the Conference,” he told the club during his first interview as the new boss. But before all that, a brief history lesson.

Paul Cook originally took charge of the Spireites back in 2012, 25 October to be exact. He came in having previously managed Southport, Sligo Rovers and Accrington Stanley before the previous CFC regime offered him the job at the club, taking over from Tommy Wright who was holding the fort as caretaker manager after John Sheridan resigned. By the close of play in his debut season, the Spireites finished just two points away from the playoffs in League 2. The following 2013/14 campaign however Cookie went one better and clinched the Spireites promotion to League 1 by winning League 2 outright AND taking the club to a Wembley final with the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy. The next season however, would be the last for Cook as CFC boss despite finishing 6th in League 1 at his first attempt. In 2015 Cookie left to pursue the manager role at Portsmouth FC. At the time it was rumored that the club (owned back then by Dave Allen, before the Community Trust took ownership) had cut the funding budget

Over the next five years, without Cookie, the club were relegated in two back to back seasons, from League 1 to League 2. Then from League 2 to crashing out the football league altogether and landing down in the National League. 2018 was a dark year for the club. Not only did they lose their football league status, but for Jack Lester in his first management role and a Spireite legend returning to manage the club after retiring as a player, was hard to witness. It was under Lester's watch we were relegated down to the National League. Full respect for trying though in my book, given Lester's legacy achieved at the club with the now retired No 14 shirt.

Despite having a succession of 11 different managers (including caretaker managers) between 2015 to 2020 AND facing an identity crisis both on and off the field, Chesterfield were eventually rescued by the Chesterfield Community Trust. On 7 August 2020 and languishing in the relegation zone of the National League the club was sold to the Community Trust and the Spireites were offered a lifeline which immediately seemed to work. The first manager to actually turn the club round under the watchful but respectful eye of the Trust was James Rowe. Rowe spent a total of 15 months at the helm before he parted with the club. But during his tenure Rowe (and the club) recruited a quality and crowd pleasing squad which was left behind after Rowe departed... and that's where Cookie now returns. To finish what he started?

12 Feb - Cook's first game in charge (two days after his announcement). Weymouth away was the fixture and 1-1 was the score. Alex Whittle became the first CFC goal scorer under the new gaffer. The game took a little longer to conclude due to Tshimanga, the goal machine, being stretchered off which pretty much ended his footballing season with a broken leg and a dislocated ankle. And if that sounded bad, it got worse. Paul Cook's first home game was the following week against Solihull Moors, and oh boy was it a memorable one. Not only did we lose 2-3, the first home defeat of the season, but we threw away a 2-0 lead

(Whittle 14, Asante 20). To add insult to injury, McCourt was also stretchered off with a suspected broken leg just like Tshimanga. So, another false start to Cookies homecoming. Next up three days later, to continue our consecutive run of home games came Deadpool's Welsh side, Wrexham. But before the game I noticed something. During the previous two games, Whittle had scored first prior to the first aiders being called into play to carry away our wounded. Both now out for the season. Thankfully however, this didn’t happen for a third time. We just lost 0-2. That was Cookie’s second home defeat in a week and CFC's second home defeat of the current season.

Paul Cook’s first win finally came at home in front of the BT Sports cameras against Yeovil with Kellermann's stunning half volley curling round the keeper. This was followed by a brilliant 3-1 comeback against Notts Co, again at home with two unexpected Maguire goals three days later to secure another victory for Paul Cook. This, as it turns out, was Cook's 150th game in charge for the Spireites. Mind you, things got back to CFC normal at the next two games Southend and Boreham Wood where we drew 2-2 with a very late equalizer from Southend. Well, technically it was an own goal by Kerr in the 89th minute. Then conceded late against Boreham finishing 1-1 live on BT Sports (sigh).

So, to conclude - Cook's back. We have limited players available and the "Mend and make do'' attitude continues as we throw away valuable points in the last few minutes of games. Whatever, it's going to be frightfully interesting to see where we end up come the 15 May… Gulp. COYBs!
