ISSUE 35 November 2022

Hello and welcome to the November edition of S41 local Magazine.
We have been blessed with a very mild autumn so far and at the time of writing this (10th of October) we are yet to have the heating on! I feel like I am winning here.
As we head towards the festive period it is time to start planning our Christmas budget and where to spend it!
Luckily, I have created a Christmas Gift Guide and part one is published in this edition. It is imperative we do our best to spend our Christmas Budget in our local economy. We love our local independents and historic town centre, and together will ensure it is there for future generations to enjoy.
On pages 26 and 27 you will find an amazing competition launched by Unhampered Chesterfield and sponsored by St Modwen Homes. The competition is fun for all the family and there are some great prizes on offer as well. I would love it if an S41 reader won the big one!
The Chatsworth Country Fairs' early morning balloon flight is a remarkable sight. For those of us who could not make it, the talented Andy Childs has kindly shared some images with us, one of which is on the front cover. Paul (S40 Magazine) took a trip out to the Gateway @Peak Development on its Zero Carbon bus. We have a full update on the progress of the project in this edition. It’s all very exciting.
There is lots going this Halloween so be sure check our What’s on pages. I would love to do the ghost walk, but I am afraid Bekah is a big scaredy! Whatever you are doing this autumn I hope you enjoy it.
Peace, love, and positivity

DRIFTING Chatsworth Country Fair's early morning balloon flight
Words: Paul Chapman Images: Andy Childs
This month's cover image comes from local photographer Andy Childs from Holymoorside. You might remember Andy? He helped out with the cover image for our Christmas edition back in December 2017 when we took our Christmas tree made of pallets and lit by Paperstarlights to Longshaw for a day out! Andy now works locally with an agency but sent in these superb shots of the balloons taking off from Chatsworth's grounds during the Country Fair in September. I hope you enjoy them as much as we did and thanks to Andy for sending them in. You can find more of Andy's work at his website below. www.andychilds.co.uk

We chat with Sally from Feel Good Dog Training
Words: Paul Chapman Images: Sally Bawden
The fear of dogs is real and many children and adults are scared of dogs.
Local dog trainer Sally Bawden, who specialises in working with families and schools to help children and dogs to live happily together, has overcome her own fear of dogs and is now helping others to do the same.
“It’s crazy that I now work with dogs! I remember vividly how stressful visiting a friend with a dog could be. I can still remember the feeling of fear with a lively Labrador running around freely when I was at a friend’s party. Luckily my fear subsided as I grew older, but this is not always the case.”
Sally has turned her fear of dogs into her passion and a career when she qualified as a Dog Trainer and set up her business Feel Good Dog Training in Holymoorside.
However, Sally wanted to specifically help families with children, so she joined Kids Around Dogs (KAD). “When I found out about the international organisation Kids Around Dogs, I knew this was the area of dog training I wanted to specialise in” Sally says, “I love working with families with the practical aspects they should be thinking about and the management tools to put in place with babies, young children and teenagers.” Skills such as how to play safely with dogs and how to read the subtle signs a dog can give when they need some space, such as turning their head away or yawning when not tired.
Sally explains that she has also seen firsthand the trauma caused when a family friend was bitten when visiting a friend’s house for a sleepover and saw the distressing fallout for all involved. The scars the girl was left with will always be there, physically and mentally.
One of the certifications Sally obtained by joining KAD was learning the successful protocol to overcome the fear of dogs in children. The fun 10-week program helps kids to understand dogs and see them as individuals with emotions; likes, dislikes, opinions and ideas, rather than a scary animal who will bite or jump up at them. What helps a lot by using the KAD protocol is the confidence the child will gain around dogs because of their new education on canine body language. Giving the child the knowledge and skills to know what to do if a dog should approach and changing their negative thoughts into positive ones. The protocol is child-led with emphasis on parents or carers being present and involved too so that the whole family learns new things about dogs. It uses positive reinforcement and rewards for completing tasks each week.
Sally has recently worked with a five year old girl whose mother saw the difference in her daughter from the start to the end of the protocol. 'My daughter was so scared of dogs it was becoming dangerous and stressful where she was hypervigilant. She would notice a dog in the distance, get sweaty palms and she would even run into the road. It was getting so stressful to even walk to school or the local park. After the protocol with Sally my daughter is now able to show interest in dogs, wave at dogs and even stroke dogs. It was pitched to my daughter’s age and Sally was very friendly.' Another parent commented that, 'It is nice not to have to worry, try to second guess what he will do when a dog is around and it has made life so much easier.' Sally confirms, “This is what makes this work so rewarding and positive for me.”
For more information or an informal chat please contact Sally or visit her website and the Kids Around Dogs website.

COMPETITION
Christmas is approaching and Unhampered have put together a Christmas Competition where you can win a star prize of £150 or one of two runners up prizes of £50 to be spent with any independent business listed on Unhampered-Chesterfield.co.uk. The prize fund has been kindly sponsored by St. Modwen Homes, who are presently developing the site at Egstow Park in Clay Cross (see advert).
The competition is open to all and is easy to enter, all you'll need is a trip in to town and a bit of time for a wander round.
From the 1st November we're displaying eight stars in businesses across town, each star contains a letter, which when you have collected all eight, makes a Christmas themed word.
The stars include the Unhampered and St. Modwen logos just to ensure you'll know when you've found one!
Opposite is a map showing the location of each business where you'll find a star, please note that some will need you to visit when they are open, also we've not named the business so you'll have to take a browse.
Once you've found all the letters unscramble them to make a festive word and send it in to us here at Unhampered to be dropped in the hat.
To be in with a chance of picking up either prize:
• Email your answer to ayup@unhampered-chesterfield.co.uk

On a sunny morning in midSeptember I clipped into my pedals and enjoyed a peaceful cycle across town, using dedicated cycle infrastructure from Queen Mary’s Road right out to the meeting point at the A61 interchange roundabout to the proposed Gateway @Peak.
I was here to take part in ‘Journey to Net Zero’ an initiative trialing two buses, one Hydrogen powered and one EV, a joint initiative between Peak Gateway Properties, Toyota, Air Products, Caetano, City Taxis and Chesterfield Borough Council, so it only seemed right that I cycle there! We were met at the A61 interchange roundabout, the consented access to the development. Much fun was had reversing out from a narrow trail after taking a wrong turn, but it got us all smiling and was a great ice breaker… easy for me though as I was the only one able to turn around!
The route through the estate site is really impressive, it opens out into a wide natural bowl, surrounded by greenery in every direction and very quiet, I’d never realised how the site was positioned over the hill to the east of the A61 so any traffic noise is lost entirely. I locked my bike up and walked the last few hundred metres to the building that was once the club house of Birchall Golf Course.
The site is owned by Birchall Properties and over the past years they have had to adapt and change as the business environment has struggled to work its way through BREXIT, COVID and the present cost of living crisis. A ‘challenge’ is an understatement.
Today things are looking good, exciting times ahead with new partners, Milligan, on board. Milligan are mixed use developers, specialists in developing iconic destinations and have for over 20 years, been using their skills to curate the right mix of uses for new destinations. Long term, this approach will serve the community and visitors in a sustainable way and this trial marks an important milestone for Gateway and the Peak District National Park.
Over the past 10 years areas of the reclaimed opencast Estate have been part of a nature recovery programme and, as a result, over 20 birds of interest migrate or reside here today. Other areas of the estate have been maintained to welcome the approved development with Biodiversity Net Gain at its heart. The Estate has outline planning permission for 2,000 hotel rooms, 250 lodges, and a range of leisure, education, and entertainment facilities many based around
outdoor activity. A number of reserved matters approvals have now been granted on the outline consent.
With the Gateway @Peak being so well connected to national road, rail and bus infrastructure it is intended to operate the PEAK Express as a car free way for tourists to experience the national park and surrounding areas.
Gateway @Peak will provide accommodation, parking (2800 spaces) and services for onward travel into the Peak District for walkers and cyclists using the PEAK Express tourist service. This will help mitigate the environmental impact of these journeys and help reduce traffic congestion.
Melanie Taylor, Director of Leasing and Commerce at Milligan, said; “Our vision is to create a sustainable hub for like-minded businesses and a basecamp for the exploration of the Peak District. This will be a world-class example of a sustainable tourism project.
“A gateway could provide information for visitors to book single or multi-day itineraries, explore the area using more sustainable, less polluting modes of transport and buy or hire outdoor activity equipment to try out new activities. The information available about the wider Park’s attractions will help spread the economic benefit of visitors beyond the area’s traditional ‘honeypots’.”
Back to the buses. Hydrogen is a zero emissions fuel and I learnt that Air Products use green energy in its production to create a clean fuel. Once we have locally produced hydrogen it will be a game changer.
I took a trip out to Hassop Station on both the EV and Hydrogen powered vehicles and couldn’t tell the difference, again I was surprised by how quickly we reached our destination using a carefully chosen route over to The Robin Hood and down through Baslow to Hassop.
With regards to timescales, facilitation works and ground investigations are underway and The Gateway @PEAK is presently scheduled to open for Autumn 2025 bringing with it up to 1,000 job opportunities and a total change in the way visitors can access the Peak District.
I can see this working. We take trips to the Peak District regularly and the ability to create rides, walks and days out around the routes taken from Gateway @Peak is an interesting one. I look forward to buying my first ticket.

Laterlivingnow!
Sue Wilmot Rowe joins the local team.
Laterlivingnow! – the only independent Equity Release specialist company based in Chesterfield and Derbyshire, have appointed Sue Wilmot Rowe as their 4th ‘Laterliving Planner’, at a time when they are experiencing unseasonably high demand for advice from homeowners over 55.
On joining Laterlivingnow! Sue said; “I believe with a passion, that those who have worked hard for much of their lives, raising families and paying vast sums in tax, deserve much better than a meagre retirement. Later life is to be enjoyed, not worried over, so I feel very privileged to be able to help our clients live better and more comfortable lives by releasing part of the value tied-up in their homes.”

Laterlivingnow! - Chesterfield and Derbyshire’s leading Equity Release specialist is expecting an even busier time ahead, as the UK Energy Price Cap rises 80% in October, with the prospect of energy bills hitting £3,549 or higher for millions of households.
The increasingly popular drawdown style of Lifetime Mortgage, established by taking a modest £10,000 minimum sum initially, can allow homeowners over 55 to take much smaller regular sums, from as little as £500 a time in some cases. This way of taking some of the value locked-up in property, may be particularly well-suited for anyone needing a bit more ‘income’ to meet the bills and live free from worry.
Laterlivingnow! is well placed to support many more clients through this turbulent, uncertain time, whilst pointing out that Equity Release may not be suited to everyone. In offering homeowners over 55 a free initial consultation, the company’s advisers can help people to understand their options, and together explore possible alternatives, such as means-tested benefits, before making recommendations.

We can usually work out in under an hour, whether releasing equity is worth considering, or whether it’s simply not right for someone – all within a free initial consultation by home visit, phone, or videocall such as Zoom, Teams, or WhatsApp. Our small team of four advisers are highly skilled, well qualified and have years of experience as advisors on Equity Release, so are well placed to help homeowners explore their options."

EYESIGHT AND AGEING
Words: Philip Norcliffe Images: Adobe Stock
Our eyes are precious, our window on the world. We mostly take vision for granted until something changes. These changes are so slow and insidious that we may have a time when our sight becomes sub-optimal.
The following article is designed to raise awareness and prompt us into seeking help and remediation. Our quality of life and emotional health is dependent on us communicating effectively with others and our safety through our sensory awareness, as our eyes are our major source of information entering the brain, allowing us to interact with others and safely negotiating our environment. As I have written previously, loneliness and isolation are a major cause of distress.
Raised awareness, early identification and correction of sight defects is essential to a good old age. Up to 40 percent of a person's vision can be lost without them even noticing.
Common age-related changes
Several aspects of vision change with age. These include a decrease in:
• Sharpness / peripheral vision
• ability to focus on objects at different distances
• ability to discriminate between certain colours
• ability to function in low light levels and adapt to dark
• ability to adapt to glare
• ability to judge distances
A narrower visual field together with neck stiffness reduces awareness of what is in front of them (for instance, pets).
The ability to shift focus also becomes slightly delayed. An older person’s eyes take longer to change focus from looking at a book and then to someone approaching.
Loss in the ability to see certain colour intensities also decreases the ability to judge distances. Walls and floors should be in sharply contrasting colours.
It becomes more difficult to distinguish steps from risers if they are the same colour. Edges of outside steps could be painted in a non-slip white paint, remember wartime!
An older person entering or leaving a darkened room needs more time than a younger person to adjust to changes in light levels. Abrupt changes in lighting can be hazardous and cause falls or other accidents. Light levels required by healthy 60-yearold eyes double those needed by a 20-year-old. Give time to adjust, when moving from room to room or ensure similar light levels in both areas.
Glare that is hardly noticeable to a younger person may create difficulties for an older person. Reading a magazine with shiny pages can be difficult. Glare from shiny floors may be mistaken for a wet surface. Sunlight, or direct lighting is intensified. Increased glare causes distortion.
Many older people have difficulty driving at night because they experience momentary blindness from the glare of oncoming traffic, brake lights and reflections from wet tarmac.
Suggestions
Older people require greater contrast between background and objects. To “see” objects most effectively, paint doorways a darker colour than the walls; and mark the edges of steps. to distinguish the riser from the flat surface. Colour contrast can mean the difference between safety and injury. The lack of colour contrast can increase the risk of falls.
All print materials should use black ink on lightcolour paper. Black ink on white or light-yellow paper is the most visible.
You may wish to shield glare from interior light sources. Cover windows with mini-blinds, sheer drapery, or light-filtering shades to control sunlight entering a room. Choose matte finishes for wall coverings and counter tops. Avoid intense light sources and shiny surfaces.
It is most important is to distribute light evenly and minimize glare.
Health
Page 42 www.s41local.com
Provide additional lighting where close work activities such as cooking, taking medication, reading, and writing, or where safety hazards exist.
Adequate lighting is especially important in the bathroom and in stairways, common sites of accidents in the home.
Nightlights in the bedroom and bath can reduce the possibility of injury. Incandescent light bulbs (regular household bulbs) are better than fluorescent lights for older people, the noise from which can be distracting.
Just a word about ‘floaters,’ which appear to float across the vision and disappear. They commonly occur in old age and are harmless.
Dry eyes may occur due to environmental factors and age; we produce up to 300mls of tears in a day, but the amount diminishes as we get older, leaving the eye gritty and in danger of infection. Talk to your pharmacist.
A check up by an optician can help to screen you for some of age-related conditions, such as glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, or retinopathy.
If you suspect, you may have diabetes contact your G.P.

Record Breakers
Words & Images: Michael South
Welcome back my fellow Spireites. Firstly, absolute respect to ALL in the ground during the minute's silence remembering Queen Elizabeth II's sad passing. You could have heard a pin drop!
So what's what, in CFC land?
At the time of writing we have just suffered our first league defeat at home against Maidenhead Utd and it was just a bad day at the office for me. All teams have them, but let's not get bogged down.
I want to highlight the fantastic run of form and team spirit that we have witnessed from the squad.
The Southend Utd game is a good example of my case in point. When they paid us a visit on the evening of 13th September it took just 19 minutes to take the lead with Clarke's opening goal. But by half time we were 2-1 down and Banks had been sent off due to a "bad tackle" (later rescinded after the Spireites won their appeal). Not so long ago that would have been that and we'd have come back out and played the second half-heartedly. But we didn't. We fought back. All due to whatever Cook said in the dressing room. It clearly had a profound impact on the squad when they returned to the field, because Quigley stormed through the Southend defence then slotted the ball calmly home past the keeper to bag the equaliser. Not so long ago we'd have probably settled for the draw, for the single point at that stage, if not have conceded a goal (or two) to lose all three points in added time. But no, not anymore. Because next stepped up Jeff King. Who, in the 69th minute, confidently and rather impressively rocketed the ball into the net from his left boot, from over 20
odd yards out, to secure all 3 points and keep us at the top of the league. What a noise THAT made round the stadium! And that right there is my point. The whole mentality has changed and has stayed consistent since the start of this season, now Cook has shaped his squad. Players want to and WILL play for the badge. It gets better too. So much so, Cookie won the Vanarama's manager of the month award (some fans believe that this is an Omen, but we shall see) AND the club has also broken a long standing club record for starting a season and remaining unbeaten at the tenth game mark. Held since 1938. Excellent!
In other news…Tshimanga. I mentioned last month how we can play and more importantly win without him in the squad given his injury and his slow rehabilitation back to the team. I questioned the need for the club to depend on him, like the season before, to score goals. And just as I'd submitted the article to print, he was linked with an imminent big transfer move to Birmingham City up in the Championship. Luckily (for us) it fell through but it did make me question if he'd be missed. The short answer is YES, but we’d survive without him in my opinion. Debate amongst yourselves here. But since being subbed on and scoring in both the Southend game and again against Maidstone Utd he still is lethal when needed. So to return to the aforementioned mentality of the squad for a moment, Oldaker then finished the comeback in the dying minutes of the Maidstone game to make it 2-1 to the Spireites.
This made him the 12th CFC player to score for the club this season. So, in the words of Roy

Castle, God rest his soul, and in keeping with the record breaking theme "Dedication's what you need!" Which leads me perfectly into our newest signing…Uchegbulam.
Fresh from Matlock Town FC who are a few leagues below Chesterfield, he has shown real class and determination to get into this team. After just a few games in, the young lad has scored his first professional goal against Yeovil Town. And it came at the right time. It was another comeback goal to earn the Spireites a point away from home. I would happily bet all the money I have currently in the bank, all £23.65 of it, on him banging in many more this season!
But to finish here we need to remember how far we’ve come and that we have broken our own club record for starting the season unbeaten in the past 10 games. Best in the club's history! Remember that if you start to feel disappointed on reflection, after a few beers. Anyway, raise a glass to Paul Cook and the boys. I for one am glad he's back, as I’m sure you are!

AUTUMN GARDENING TIPS
Words: Transition Chesterfield
Robert Nixon Betts
f you have been organised enough to order barerooted trees or shrubs (local nurseries may have some, although the varieties will be limited), they should be delivered sometime this month. Plant them out as soon as possible – it is essential the roots don't dry out, so if you have to keep them for a few days, wrap them in some old sacking or something similar, and (very important) keep them out of the wind.
Prune established apple and pear trees; this can be done any time between leaf fall and buds bursting but early winter days are more likely to be mild and pleasant. Aim for an open, wine-glass shape, to allow air to circulate and fruit to form where it will receive maximum light. Many perennials should now be cut down to ground level, although you can leave those with attractive seed-heads if they’ve not been made tatty by the wind – grasses can be particularly effective for a few more weeks, especially if they get frosted, and seedheads can attract birds.
Lawns may still need occasional mowing; keep them clear of fallen leaves and rake out worm-casts. You can also lightly trim hedges to keep them tidy, but don't overdo it otherwise you'll be looking at bare patches all winter.
Sow over-wintering vegetables – cabbages, broad beans and peas are just some that will grow much faster in spring if they’ve had the chance to develop roots beforehand.
Outside containers should be insulated before it gets consistently cold, by wrapping in bubble-wrap. Do this when it’s mild and not frosty, otherwise you’ll just seal in the frost.
Continue to check any bare soil for germinating weeds and deal with them; it's normally easier to get out all of a dandelion root out if the soil is wet. Digging over vegetable patches can be quite pleasant if the weather is good, with the possible added bonus of a robin watching to see if you turn up any worms. But try to avoid walking on wet soil, as this will compact it, then you'll need to dig it again.
If the birds have left you any holly berries which you want for Christmas decorations, protect them with fleece or a loosely fixed bag.
If you have birdfeeders, keep them topped up (and provide fresh water as well); encouraging foraging birds, especially tits, will help deal with overwintering pests and their eggs, as well as being great fun to watch.
Mostly the colder months are about planning for next year, looking at catalogues and ordering seeds. No-one can predict what the weather will be like next week, let alone next year, so you'll have to assume it will be a normal summer – if only we knew what that was any more.
