On reflection, I would say this is a reasonable effort. The amount of time I still spend on social media bothers me and is something I will continue to work in 2024. Tennis highlights on YouTube don’t count right? 2023 was a wonderful year for us as a family. Florie continues to enjoy her time at Westfield Infants School and is growing in confidence. Evangeline is now a teenager and is embracing her newfound freedom, although I do seem to be doing a lot more picking up and dropping off! Bekah and I have laughed a lot and continue to grow closer; lots to be grateful for.

You may remember John Rastrick, one of our Local Heroes from 2020. John recently won a Pride of Britain Award in 2023! I caught up with him to find out all about this amazing accolade.

rampton artists Kate and Liz Pope, who happen to be twins, share a bond that goes beyond the typical sisterly connection. They attended school together, pursued the same art and design course at Chesterfield College, and continued their academic journey at Staffordshire University, surprisingly opting for the same degree. It's almost inevitable that they now collaborate to create art and manage a sustainable, local business together.
I caught up with this month's front cover artists at the Vintage Tea Rooms on Vicar Lane over a flat white and a biscuit. Liz and Kate’s artistic talents have been passed down from their dad, Denis. Denis recently painted a canvas of their beloved VW Campervan for Liz and her partner Pat. Page 4
“Our dad has always been an inspiration to us. He’s a highly creative man who, following his retirement, has just started painting again. We got him paints and brushes for Christmas and he painted our Campervan for us as a gift, which is so beautiful it made us cry,” say Liz and Kate.
From an early age Liz and Kate knew they wanted to make a career from their art and couldn’t really see themselves doing anything else.
“We realised we could turn our passion into our profession at our university degree showcase event, where we sold quite a few pieces of our work. It wasn’t long before I started getting briefs through the post and teamed up with Liz to start our collaborative journey,” smiles Kate. www.s41local.com

Cover Artists “We started off selling handmade cards at shops in Chesterfield and had an exhibition at A4Art, which is sadly no longer with us. We do have some available in West Studios still,” says Liz. Keen to know more about their collaborative approach to art, I asked them, how do you work together to create piece of art, who does what?
"We have illustrated a lot of children's books together such as; Wanda’s First Day, Mermaid Dreams, and quite few educational and sticker books. We both know our strengths, Kate is creative with colours and paint, and has a commercially appealing style, and I am more fine art, lines and a bit quirky. It works well together,” says Liz.
The twins use Minute Man Press, a local business based in Brampton for all their prints. “It’s great just being able to walk over the road and collect our orders. It keeps our carbon footprint and posting costs low whilst supporting a fellow indie business. Plus, they send us a hamper at Christmas,” smiles Liz.
Liz and Kate's reimaginings of some of the UK's most iconic cities, towns, and landscapes stand out as their top-selling pieces, and it's easy to see why. The vibrant colours and expressive lines evoke a warm and joyful sensation, reminiscent of the Great British summer. Their artwork transports me back to a childhood filled with memories of laughter, hope, and optimism. “Whitby, Chesterfield, Matlock, Brighton...sell well, but our most popular piece is the Edinburgh one, that’s also my favourite,” smiles Kate. The future for the Pope twins is as bright as their art, with several commissions underway and a thriving Etsy store.
“We are currently working on a few pieces for our clients, and we are always open to more. A big thanks to Simon and Paul (S41 and S40 Local Magazines) for featuring us this month,” say Kate and Liz. Page 6

Catching up with World Champion

t's just over 12 months since we had a chat with a young Harry Bartle, who had taken to Karting like a duck to water. At the end of October 2023, he became a World Champion, beating 85 drivers from around the world in the IWF23 X30 at the Portimao International Kart Track in Portugal.
I sat down with proud dad Rob at Autoselect's showroom to see how the year progressed to such a fantastic conclusion. “The drivers that compete in the IAME IWF X30 races are selected from the top finishers from around the world. You need to be on your A game to be selected and Harry’s performance in 2023 put him in the top five in the UK.
“The drivers come from 40 different countries and Harry started in a grid that contained 85 drivers, racing across several days and heats, taking points from each, the 85 were reduced to 36 in the final race. “Harry did a great job qualifying fourth in his group for the final race where he went on to fight to take the win,” says Rob.

In summary Harry took second place on the second lap, dropped to fourth on lap five, and had a fantastic overtake on lap nine to get first position. He lost this, falling to position two; racing is so close in these races, they physically push each other round the circuit, it’s not unusual for the lead to change multiple times in a single lap.
Harry took an easy overtake on lap ten to take first again where he stayed until the race end, pulling out a small lead to finish 4/10ths of a second ahead. Throughout the race he was pushed by three team Fusion drivers who all took time penalties finishing well down the final classification. Closer to home Harry has had a great year in the UK, finishing 7th in the UK Championships and 5th in the European series. “Harry suffered from a points deduction in the European race after a slight slip off the track, it felt so cruel. Although his X30 win is great, the performance in Europe felt more of an achievement as it has been a hard battle throughout the year,” says Rob. We chatted about the time and costs of racing.

Sport “The kids range in age from 12 to 14 and Harry is racing against the older kids, the support they need from us as parents is huge. As we said last time we spoke, it all started when Harry tried Karting and looked like he had a talent, so I chatted with Claire, Harry’s mum and we decided to give it a ago. “I don’t think either of us thought he’d get this far.
“Some the drivers have parents spending over £1M per season on them, building family teams around them, this simply isn’t something we can do, but we continue to seek sponsorship and opportunities to ensure we can get the achievements we know Harry is capable of.
British Championship certified by FIA is the first step for young drivers making the transition from karting into single seaters. It’s by no way a guaranteed opportunity but possible routes into F4 do exist for the best Kart drivers. Potentially Harry has what’s needed. Whatever happens, it will be an interesting time for Rob and the family. “We have to be realistic about the future,” explains Rob. “This really is a full-time job for me and I have a business to run, I can’t thank James and the team at Autoselect Cars enough for all they do to keep the wheels turning whilst I’m away.
“Harry is showing he has the talent; his progress has been nothing short of remarkable and we’re competing in a field of extremely wealthy people. I hope that with the right sponsorship and support we can achieve the results I know Harry is capable of.
“The cost of taking part in the European races are equivalent to taking the family away on holiday! There’s me, Harry, our mechanic, Stu etc. It's OK once or twice a year, but I don’t want to think how many times we’ve done it this year.
“Let’s meet up again in 12 months and see where we are!” Rob finishes.
“If anyone knows of a local multi-millionaire who’d like to see their brand on a world championship winning Kart give us a call,” laughs Rob.
“I’d also like to express my thanks to the leadership team at Brookfield School, these race weekends need time out of school and they have been really supportive,” Rob says. "The kart Harry was using is the same as we discussed last Time. We raced as Croc Promotions, they wanted Harry in their team as his performance was so good throughout the year. We use Grice engines, the engines and carburettors are rented to high performing drivers, these guys want the best drivers to be using their products, they are also powerful reliable units so give drivers the best chance possible. “Due to the results, we have now been approached by Strawberry Racing and work with them, using their carts, pit space and engines. They are one of the best available and this will really assist with Harry’s progress,” says Rob.
This is a fantastic achievement, to come from new driver to World Champion in such a short time, we are thrilled to see someone living locally succeeding on the world's stage, helping to put Chesterfield on the motorsport map.
I can’t wait to see what the future holds for Harry, we wish him, Rob, the family, and the team all the best for the 2024 season and we’ll be sure to follow progress closely.

In the first race with Strawberry, Harry went straight to the front. The support from the other drivers in the team has been fantastic and Harry is learning fast, picking up new skills all the time. The possible next stage for Harry’s racing career is FIA Formula 4. The ROKiT F4 Page 12

hristmas is behind us and for those of you planning to tie the knot this year, why not take a leaf out of Simon and Kaye Chalk's book and give it a local flavour.
Simon Chalk and Kaye Wallis from Laterlivingnow! got married in October last year, nothing too special about that you might say, but they are both huge fans and supporters of the wonderful local businesses we have in Chesterfield. They set a goal to ensure that as many of the services and products they needed for the big day would come from local suppliers.
“There are many excellent reasons to use local businesses,” explains Kaye. “We conduct a lot of business in the area, and we wanted to repay that loyalty and, as much as possible, keep the business in the town. Not only that, but local suppliers also know the area like the back of their hands and their reputation rests on providing excellence in customer service. Being on the doorstep, these businesses are also likely to be more cost effective and, in terms of the carbon footprint, there will be significantly less miles travelled. So, more sustainable, it most certainly is!” “Kaye bought her dress from Nora Eve, and I got my outfit from Andy Ingman at Ingmans,” said Simon.” We held the wedding ceremony at the Peak Edge Hotel and the reception in the Walton Suite; the bridesmaids’ dresses and Kaye’s shoes came from Blanc; the flowers were provided by Fresh Ideas Florists; we had our hair done at Harleys by Phil and Katrina; make up for Kaye was by Lauren at Cosmetique181; the rings were chosen from John Stevenson Jewellers; the cheese wedding cake was lovingly created by Simon Davidson at Cheese Factor; and the photographer, DJ, and band were based locally. The ceremony really had a local flavour!”
Simon and Kaye first met 30 years ago, Kaye was selling houses for Ben Bailey Homes and Simon was arranging mortgages for Roy Pink & Co. The chance meetings resulted in a couple of dates some years later, but they went their own ways. The pair reconnected via the social media app LinkedIn about six years ago and after about 12 months started seeing each other. Simon popped the question in Cleethorpes in February 2023 and the wedding was set for 11 October last year… I have this picture of Simon on one knee, ring in one hand, tray of whelks in the other! The wedding was a day enjoyed by all, Kaye’s brother, David, flew over from Hong Kong, and her sons, Daniel and Ashley gave her away. Simon’s daughter, Alex, was a bridesmaid. Simon’s son, Henry, was the ring bearer and read out a special poem, and longstanding friend, Neil Messenger was best man.
The supplier list is shown in detail overleaf, and should you be thinking of becoming two this year, it makes a great starting point for sourcing everything you need to make your dream come true. Of course, this is just Simon and Kaye’s choice, there are many more fabulous local suppliers out there but at least by taking the same approach you can be sure of helping the immediate economy… something a Vegas wedding can’t do! Local Hero
John Rastrick The Pride of Britain

S
hortly after John Rastrick received our Local Hero award in 2020 for rescuing a woman (Pari Mistry) from a burning car on the motorway, ITV contacted him to participate in the Pride of Britain Awards. However, three years passed, and he began to think they had forgotten about him. It wasn't until they called him back to announce that he was the recipient of a 'Pride of Britain Award 2023.' Little did John know that his selfless heroism would lead to a wonderful friendship, a new life, and national recognition. Over the past three years, John and Pari have formed an unbreakable bond and this September John got to meet Pari’s first child, Axar. An incredibly special moment indeed. “Pari came to visit me in September with her baby and it was special. She took us out for a meal, and we had a wonderful time,” smiles John.
John and his wife Janet were invited to London, where he was treated like the hero he is. They were accommodated in a luxurious London hotel and had their every whim catered for. They met up with fellow award winners; Rob Burrows (Rugby legend), Freya Harris (Child of courage), Dame Averil Mansfield (Pioneering surgeon) and many of the Windrush Generation (Outstanding contribution). Ben Shepperd kicked off the event going over the order of the evening before introducing the hosts Ashley Banjo and everyone’s favourite mathematician, Carol Vorderman.
“We were seated right at the front, and I was told I was on second, which was great because it was a free bar,” jokes John.
John's clip of him rescuing Pari from a burning vehicle and the profound impact it had on her and her family's life didn't leave a dry eye in the house. I revisited it on ITV X (ITV’s streaming service), and I'm not ashamed to admit that I shed a few tears John is using his new platform to inspire future generations.
“I recently visited Holme Hall Primary to talk to a class of pupils about my experience, and I absolutely loved it. They have invited me back to do an assembly which I’m looking forward too,” smiles John.

A Sell Out Success An Ashgate Hospice fundraiser by local flautist Katy Strudwick Words: Katy Strudwick Images: Ian Boler Photography On Saturday 2 December, Katy Strudwick held a Gala Concert at the Cavendish Hall, Edensor, in memory of her Mother, Jill Runham, and to raise money for Ashgate Hospice. Katy says "December 2023 marks 10 years since my Mum died and Ashgate Hospice cared for her so brilliantly in her last couple of weeks with us. The support and love that Mum gave me and my siblings was something we will always be very grateful for. I realise how lucky I am to be able to do what I do with my music, and a huge part of that is thanks to the encouragement and support she gave me. Putting on the Gala Concert was a way for me to say thank you to Ashgate Hospice. "As a family we were lucky to be able to access the help and excellent service of nursing care and knowledge at Ashgate Hospice when Mum’s cancer became too much for us to manage as a family. The care and support that we got every day from everyone who worked or volunteered at the Hospice was something we will never forget.
"I had the idea of organising a gala concert in early 2023. I wanted to play some flute pieces that meant a lot to me and my Mum, but I also wanted to share the evening with other performers to create a real mix of music and entertainment." Katy was lucky enough to get the brilliantly talented West End star Savannah Stevenson (best known for playing Glinda in Wicked) and the wonderful Equinox Saxophone Ensemble from Nottingham to come along to perform too. Andrew Marples provided the expert piano accompaniment for Katy and Savannah, an amazing line up, with music from all eras and styles. The concert was a huge success with a sold out venue. People braved the snow and were treated not only to an evening of music, but a welcome glass of fizz with Page 24

beautiful food and drink served at the interval, provided so generously by Libby’s of Chatsworth Road and Franklin & Sons.

Ashgate Hospice is in Old Brampton, Chesterfield, and offers a whole range of services to the local community but the Hospice is only funded by charitable donations. They provide palliative and end-of-life care, free of charge to people aged 18 and over. While their purpose is to provide care to those with life-limiting illnesses, the Hospice doesn’t only begin their work at the very end of someone’s life. They can help improve quality of life soon after a terminal diagnosis as well as supporting people’s loved ones to ensure they get the practical, emotional and bereavement support they need.
Katy’s concert has raised over £3750 so far, which will help families continue to access the Hospice’s services when they need them. As well as raising money through ticket sales and a Facebook fundraiser, there was a raffle at the concert with prizes including donations from local businesses Casa & Adam’s Happy Hens. “I am so grateful to everyone who helped make the evening go as smoothly as it did, and in helping to raise so much money for the Hospice. It is a night I will always remember!” says Katy.

Relocation: CBC Customer Service Centre
Chesterfield Borough Council’s new Customer Service Centre will be opening its doors in the Town Hall for on Wednesday 20 December - following its relocation to create a one-stop-shop for a wide range of public services. The move will allow customers to access a number of public services in one location – including all council revenue and benefits services, as well as licensing, planning, environmental services and housing services.
Business Success at the Northern Gateway Enterprise Centre
Modern, centrally located and well connected office accommodation with easy in and out terms, the Northern Gateway Enterprise Centre was officially opened in July 2022 and around 80% of the building is currently let. Incentives are now available for businesses looking to relocate into the last remaining larger offices in the centre.
The relocated Customer Service Centre will be based on the ground floor of the Town Hall, with easy access via the main front steps or via the accessible side entrance.
Opening hours will remain the same, meaning residents can access the Customer Service Centre between 9am and 2pm on a Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and between 10am and 2pm on a Wednesday. Moving services to a single building will allow a reduction in costs, creates one stopshop for customers and helps to reduce the council’s carbon emissions and energy use, supporting its ambition to become a carbon neutral organisation by 2030. Residents are reminded that the payment machines which were removed from the Customer Services Centre on 27 November will not be relocated to the Town Hall.
Residents will still be able to pay cash or use card for council services using PayPoint facilities in local shops or by using the Post Office network. As well as the council’s own Customer Service Centre residents will still be able to access Chesterfield Register Office, and Chesterfield Coroner’s Office and Court on the ground floor of the Town Hall. The Northern Gateway Enterprise centre is somewhere we feel extremely proud to welcome businesses to such a wonderful, expanding market town with great transport links and accommodation provisions.” The Enterprise Centre includes 32 office suites in a range of sizes, all of which are fitted with the latest hi-tech features that are now standard requirements for modern businesses. It has meeting facilities allowing businesses to host hybrid meetings and secure cycle parking and shower facilities to allow tenants to bike to work – supporting low carbon transport options. There are also features like the breakout room where businesses can network and find out how they can work together. But the centre provides much more than just office space, as tenants can access bespoke business support services to help them grow and develop, supporting the creation of more jobs and boosting the local economy.

WINTER GARDENING TIPS Words: Transition Chesterfield
M
any people put their plot to sleep for the winter. They clear out the vegetables that have finished in the autumn and leave them empty, doing nothing until the spring. But it is still possible to leave some root crops in the ground, removing them when needed for the table. These include beetroot, carrots, parsnips and turnips.
Have you thought of covering your plot with a membrane? e.g., black plastic, weed control fabric or anything that removes the light, perhaps even an old carpet. This prevents weeds from growing and the goodness leeching away from the soil. It is a good time to deep clean and sharpen all the tools lying in the shed. A thin film of oil appropriately used is recommended for steel tools put away for the winter.
Outdoor sowing of broad beans is still possible if you choose Super Aquadulce, a hardy variety. A greenhouse or windowsill can give you a tremendous start to next year if, before the end of December, you sow seeds for peppers (sweet & chilli), tomatoes & onions.
This is the time of year to begin to plan for next year, send off for the new season’s seed and nursery catalogues. Time can also be usefully spent looking through the hundreds of company websites and searching the internet to find interesting and new varieties. Don’t be overambitious though, only plan for plants where there’s space. Winter is the best time to dig the heavy ground, incorporating manure or compost, but don’t try to do it all at once - you’ve got a good couple of months to finish it all. Keep everywhere clear of debris, which can harbour diseases and harmful organisms. But try not to be too fussy; old logs and piles of leaves tucked away somewhere are excellent over-wintering spots for essential wildlife.
Reduce the watering of houseplants, and mist them regularly to stop the central heating drying them out. The ideal is to keep them clustered together in an unheated but light room.

Make leaf mold. Although some leaves begin to fall in September, the time when the bulk of fallen leaves are available is at the end of November and into December. Why not make a clamp with four posts and chicken wire into a container and put all of the leaves you can collect within it? This weed-free soil conditioner is best spread on the ground later in the year.

Halfway There.
Happy New Year my fellow Spireites! Hope you had a merry olde Christmas. Now that the festive period is over and the new year has begun, we look forward to what is undoubtedly the final year in the National League. Currently sat at the top of the league where we’ve reigned comfortably for most of 2023, the second half of the season technically should be a breeze. Well so I thought.
Let's start at the end of December. After many, many goals and many wins we lost 2-0 away at Solihull. Now for me this was bound to happen. We can't win them all and we haven't lost a game since 18 November, and THAT was only our second defeat of the season losing 2-1, and the winner was a Chesterfield own OG! No, football is never Page 48
a sure fire thing but it is the best start to a season we've had since being in this league. So yeah we dropped three points (and Grimes decided to get sent off in the dying minutes) but it is what it is. As Cook has shown throughout this season, we have many players to fill in for missing players. That's the beauty AND STRENGTH of this team. It's always being rotated and each player gets this turn and doesn't really disappoint. Now the better games.
And there are plenty of these to choose from. The FA Cup or the FA Trophy or the league. We are still in them all. Technically we are on for the treble at the time of writing lol. Chesterfield beat Leyton Orient 1- 0 at home with a wicked cross deflecting over the head of the keeper earning us our place in

the third round against Watford. Regarding the FA Trophy the Spireites defeated Southport 6-1 at home with help of the younger lads being called up to serve the club.
The photos this month however all come from the 4-1 Aldershot game. This was a game that showed the whole ethos of Chesterfield FC. We went a goal behind through poor defending (which to be fair is a rare thing) but then we pressed for the equalizer which DJ delivered literally two minutes later from his free kick leveling the game. At half time we'd earned a point but come the second half, we earned the other two, keeping us firmly as leaders of this league with a double figure lead and games in hand. Hence, rightly or wrongly affording to lose the odd game or two as we did at Solihull and still be top.
Like last season, and the season before that, there isn't a shortage of goalscorers in this team. There were four in the Aldershot game alone! DJ, Colclough, Grigg and Dobra. Personally I was pleased to see Berry get on the score sheet in the trophy game against Southport. Even in that game there were five players grabbing a goal. Jacobs, Curtis, Berry, Jessop and Aftab-Mohiuddin.
As 2024 begins and the final four months of the National League approach, it will be nice to see April arrive as we lift the trophy. I personally don't see us steering off course with this as what Cookie has built here since his return is nothing short of fantastic! It's nice to feel genuinely positive and achieve the promotion that's been so damn close the past couple of seasons. What would be nice is to be able to lift the trophy at home a few games before the season ends, points permitting. Think I'm mad? How epic would it be to be in a position, to lift it early? To proudly show and celebrate the success of this team…this club?! To show that eventually teams can turn things around, both on and off the pitch to get back into the football league. As John Lennon said “You may say I'm a dreamer but I'm not the only one!” anyway roll on 2024…and League Two! COYBs!
