Intro

A belated Happy New Year to you and welcome to the second edition of S41 Local magazine.

As we reach the end of January, I am sure you are still on track with your resolutions and none have been broken just yet!

2019 for S41 is very exciting indeed, each monthly edition we publish will be a first for us and will bring with it a fresh, but welcome challenge. We have no doubt it will be a rollercoaster ride, but we wouldn't have it any other way!

Now you may have noticed a typo in our Christmas editions intro. This was simply there to test you and had nothing to do with the mad scramble to get the first publication over the finish line and off to the printers!

So many of you have contacted us with words of kindness and support. We cannot thank you enough for this and we hope you enjoy the second edition as much as the first.

As everyone knows the sequel isn’t usually as good as the original (Star Wars is an anomaly) but I am sure, with your help we will improve with every issue.

We wish to thank our friends and family for volunteering their time, legs, knees and backs delivering over 6,000 copies of the magazine. A special mention to David Paterson who led the charge and ensured his old stomping ground (Newbold and Dunston) received their copies on time and dry! Keep a look out for him this month!

Nicky and John are the proud new proprietors of The Three Cottages. They made the move in July and have been working very hard to create a friendly and welcoming pub, where you can come for delicious family friendly food, or a cosy pint in the front room. I had the pleasure of meeting them both this month. It’s clear they have a passion for what they do and they couldn’t be more welcoming.

If you are a dog owner like me who likes to finish their walk with a well-earned drink, you’ll be pleased to know our K-9 friends are very welcome. With a dedicated dog friendly area, you can sit and chat with your fellow dog lovers or just enjoy the gin!

Bekah Anstey Festive fatigue

This year has seen my job title change to ‘exhausted mum of 2’.

Having two children is an absolute game changer. When you have one child and two parents, you outnumber the offspring two to one, leaving one parent free to complete tasks or have some well-earned down time. Two kids and your ratios are all out of whack; no down time and tasks start to slip. I recently caught Simon skiving in the bathroom with little or no intent of using it's facilities. He was just sat on the edge of the bath watching YouTube; stay vigilant ladies!

Parenting is the hardest job in the world but also the most rewarding. I find it most rewarding when the kids are asleep, which according to our youngest, is not required!

The festive period bought us various gifts in the form of infections and viruses. Both children battled the lurgy, but they didn’t let it get them down. They were absolute troopers which is more than I can say for Simon; man flu is a killer apparently!

I staggered through December with no make up on, excessive amounts of dry shampoo, no gym classes and very little wine, even the mulled variety was a rarity.

By Christmas day I had almost completely devolved into a blob fish, the ugliest of all the creatures!

But December wasn’t all doom and gloom.

Evangeline had her 8th birthday party, which all her best friends attended. I think the mum’s enjoyed it more though as they scoffed down the most delicious birthday cake made by the very talented ‘Cakes by Bobbies Den’.

It was our first Christmas as a family of four and one I will cherish forever. We spent time with all the people we care most about in the world and I know just how lucky I am to have them.

At times with the illnesses and pressure of not only making Christmas magical, but Eva and my dad’s birthday as well! I thought I was losing I was my marbles.

If you’re on route to losing your marbles as many of us are at times here are three tips to keep you on top form if you’re feeling the strain:

Mindfulness – A therapeutic technique that is about having an awareness of the present moment, this helps you to understand and control your moods, feelings and reactions. Just ten minutes per day makes a huge impact on your mental health.

Nature – Get outside and take in the fresh air, visiting a park or farm can improve your mood, reduce stress and help you to be more active. Some Doctors nowadays are prescribing fresh air and a good walk!

Relaxation – Take a bath, listen to some music or walk the dog (unless you have a springer spaniel like us – this isn’t relaxing at all) I hope you enjoy our wedding section and if it sparks any proposals, please let us know!

From Newbold to New York Local boy, international Artist Words: Simon Paterson Images: Dave Gee Dave draws really cool doodle maps!

Born and raised in Newbold, Dave is a freelance illustrator now living in the heart of Manchester.

Working from AWOL Studios in Ancoats, Dave’s illustrations can be viewed in many cities including Manchester, Hamburg and New York!

Dave’s trademark are his doodle maps which combine his unique doodle style with cartoonish illustrations creating a map of a city.

Using his trusty posca pens Dave has created artwork for clients based all around the world and has even travelled abroad for some of his trademark doodle map mural pieces.

Having seen Dave’s art on Instagram I was keen to set up an interview with him and feature his amazing doodle map of Chesterfield as this month’s S41 front cover.

Meet Dave, this month's cover Artist

So, Dave, did you always want to be an artist?

No! Growing up I always wanted to be a footballer or an actor. I have, however, always had a passion for drawing and have drawn for as long as I can remember.

I never thought much of it until one day, when I was around 18, a friend of mine picked up my sketch book which was full of doodles and was amazed by them (his words not mine). After that I started to take it a little more seriously.

Doodle maps are very creative and a cool concept, where did you come up with the idea?

Well, I lived in Berlin for a while and worked in an art gallery; whilst doodling and drawing various pieces in my spare time. The website ‘Art Connect Berlin’ was promoting an open invitation for artists to showcase their work to the public. I signed up and exhibited two pieces ‘Panda and other species’ and ‘Psychedelic Bob Dylan’. Both got a really great reaction.

One guy said to me “your doodles are like looking at a city from above”. This comment lead to me coming up with doodle maps. A friend suggested drawing straight onto a street map, but it didn’t turn out how I wanted so just made my own instead!

How does the creative process work and where do you start?

When doodling a map, like a new place, I’ll make a list of landmarks, businesses, sports teams, monuments etc... Then I will work out the area I want to cover and do a rough sketch adding all the places of interest. I draw on all the roads and finally the houses. All my doodles are hand drawn and then scanned in and vectorised.

Which artists do you enjoy and what inspires you about them?

Thought provoking artists like Salvador Dali and Francis Bacon. I am drawn to anything that is intricate and black and white. Some of my work has been compared to Keith Haring, the New York street artist, although I had never seen his work until I looked it up. I am a big fan now, in fact, I got a book of his work for Christmas this year and I am hoping to see his upcoming exhibition in Liverpool.

Which current art world trends are you following?

I follow a lot of street art, but the big thing for me is beer can art, it’s big business now. ABC Brewing company have an artist ‘Hammo’ who is doing amazing stuff and the artwork from Beaver Town is pretty cool.

I am drawn to anything that is intricate and black and white" So which town or city did you doodle first, I’m hoping you say Chesterfield?

As I currently live in Manchester this seemed like the best place to start, so Manchester was my first ever doodle map.

Shortly after this I doodled Chesterfield and Sheffield.

Which city do you wish to travel to and doddle the most and which have been your most memorable so far?

Well I have never doodled Berlin despite living there!

Earlier this year I was lucky enough to travel to New York and doodle a city centre mural across a wall in the ‘Inside New York Hotel’, that was a great experience.

I did one in Hong Kong with a broken ankle which I sustained playing football at the Proact stadium with my dad. We are big Chesterfield fans and had the opportunity to pay to play at the stadium, so we did.

Unfortunately, I hurt my ankle which after one thing and another led tme to having a pot fitted in hospital! I then limped around a huge white wall whilst creating a mural of Hong Kong island!

"I am doing two large walls at Meadow Hall in 2019 of Sheffield and I will sneak a bit of Chesterfield on the map, if I can" What’s the biggest challenge you have faced so far as an artist, aside from the Hong Kong ankle incident?

I think getting paid and only being able to draw around 50% of the time is tough.

There is a lot that goes in to running a business which you won’t know until you have started one!

What do you miss the most about Chesterfield?

I still have a great group of friends here and of course my family. I try to get back monthly if I can. I used to enjoy the football, but this season is a tough one! I tend to go to away games though which works better for me.

This one is a curve ball Dave: You are hosting a dinner party and can invite 4 guests. Whomever you invite will attend, past or present, dead or alive, who do you invite and what do you serve them?

Francis Bacon, I read a book about him going to a lot of dinner parties, so he would definitely be good value. Jack Lester because he is the best player I have seen at Chesterfield. Nick Cave just seems dead interesting and I love his music, so he would be my third guest. Shane MacGowan, a young one as he can’t really speak these days! I Read his book and he is crazy!

What would I serve them? Probably lasagne, I reckon I can just about rustle one up!

Finally, what are your plans for 2019?

I want to travel more with the art work and I'm hoping to get a US agent. I am talking to one at the minute. I'm doing two large walls at Meadowhall in 2019 and I will sneak a bit of Chesterfield in the map if I can.

S41 met S41 Confusing we know Words: Bekah Anstey Images: Jez Revell Come and see the radio station they said, I couldn’t say yes quick enough!

All things media related has been a passion for me from an early age, I studied media at college and loved every minute.

From splicing (yes, I’m that old) in the sound booth to creating and filming tv shows, I was in my element. I haven’t had much opportunity to do anything media related for a long time as life got in the way and I found a new career path.

So, when Jez from S41 Radio offered a radio tour I jumped at the chance and was knocking at their door the next day.

I was surprised to hear that S41 radio was only launched in July 2017 in the corner of an office at Jez’s talent agency. Since then they have built an amazing studio for the main shows and an additional studio for S41 Radio Xtra,

both of which look fantastic, Simon and I were desperate to get in the presenters’ seats. We did… and have photographic evidence to prove it.

The station has very similar aims to that of ours, they want to be involved in anything and everything Chesterfield has to offer and share this with the local community.

They like to support new start up businesses and offer free radio interviews to those of you that are happy to be live on the radio. With over 10,000 listeners this would be a great boost for any business, we are looking forward to doing our feature with Jez very soon.

A design for every occassion Meet Vicky Bell of Tilly Fudge Words: Bekah Anstey Images: Vicky Bell West Studios is home to many talented artists, entrepreneurs and designers, so I didn’t have far to walk to catch up with the gifted Vicky Bell of Tilly Fudge, in fact she’s in the studio next door!

The studio wall is filled with Vicky’s beautiful bespoke pieces of art, from occasions past and present.

Vicky is the owner and launched the business after a light bulb moment when she was working as a Family Support worker in Derbyshire. As a mum of two boys Archie and Harry, Vicky is determined to be a role model to her boys, not only as a mother but as a business woman.

“My husband and partner in crime Tom (not literally, I’m sure they are law abiding citizens), has been my inspiration. He has supported me through the whole process of setting up my business, even helping out at wedding fayres and taking orders, not just from me, but customers as well!” Says Vicky.

Tom has his own very successful business (Defeye Creative, see our Christmas edition) and shares the studio with Vicky.

Between them they are a tour de force of creativity and design.

“It all started in 2014 when I ordered Archie’s Christening invitations online.

When they arrived, even though they were lovely I thought it was something I could do! I suppose it was at this moment Tilly Fudge was born.

I studied Art & Design at college and have always had a passion for all things creative. I regularly made cards and bespoke prints for friends and family.

Crafts are my hobby, so I never dreamed that my passion would ever be my income!

Until I went to work one day (Family Support Worker) and was told my job was at risk of redundancy. This gave me all the motivation I needed. I secured a space at West Studios and began designing and marketing”.

Five year’s later and Vicky is at the top of her craft. She creates bespoke stationary and printed products, by digitally illustrating lovely things!

Her best-selling piece just so happens to be her first ever commercially available design. She is super proud of it and rightly so…

Vicky said “it was nerve-racking creating something on paper that someone had simply thought of in their head. What If I get it wrong and they don’t like it?

Thankfully, when I showed them the finished piece, they loved it”.

It’s clear Vicky loves what she does from the passion in her voice, smile on her face and the designs she creates.

Whether it's organising fundraising events, donating money to charity or giving up their time to help others. This month’s local hero has done all the above and so much more.

Let me introduce you to this month’s S41 local hero Alysha Bradley of Belle Vie. A true inspiration and role model to others, I spoke with Alysha’s sister Tara to get the low down. Here is what she had to say.

“My sister is a selfless person that believes in the laws of attraction, she goes out of her way to help others and gives back to the community. She’s successful, not only because she works extremely hard, but because she is kind to people and treats them well. Alysha motivates and pushes all her staff to be the best and to help others, this is why she is successful. She uses this success to her advantage to help people that are less fortunate or going through tough times. I’m extremely proud of my sister and family for the love we put back into our community”

“Alysha never expects anything back from others, she helps them because she wants to. She believes in Karma and that you should always help if you can, she encourages her staff to do this too. Recently we had a colleague whose mother is a cancer patient and needed a wig. Alysha set up some fundraising in the salon and matched the amount raised to give to her colleague’s mum towards her wig. This is such a little thing for Alysha to do but has a massive impact on others" Alysha has helped others by raising money for baby clothes for still born babies, bought sleeping bags for the homeless, donated £200 a month to a nominated charity that is chosen by Belle Vie clients, shopped for the elderly when they couldn't themselves, taken NHS staff to work in the snow and taken part in the shoebox appeal. All this on top of running a business and being a mum to Amelia and I thought I was busy!

What better way to show your children it is important to help others than leading by example, I’m sure Amelia is very proud and knows what an amazingly selfless person Alysha is.

Alysha has launched a campaign to offer free treatments to those who have a terminal illness, this idea came from supporting the Look Good, Feel Good campaign in Nottingham and is aimed at making others feel special for a day. Alysha and Tara lost their wonderful brother and dad of two Lex to cancer last year and want to find some positivity from a traumatic experience. This is their motivation to help others that are going through a similar experience and to try to ease the pain.

The sessions run every 1st Monday of the month and need to be booked in advance to ensure the treatment is suitable for you.

U

nless you have been hiding under a rock recently you will more than likely have heard the words 'Vegan' and 'Veganuary' being dropped into conversation. This year is set to be the 'year of the Vegan' supported by Veganuary which is now in its 5th year. There have been over 250,000 people across 193 countries joining the movement. with many of those following a new plant-based diet being British.

According to the guardian not a single week went by in 2018 without Veganism hitting the headlines in one way or another. Many celebrities can be thanked for several of those headlines with strong views on Vegans - those trying to save the planet by giving up meat and dairy. Apparently, there’s no such thing as bad publicity, so to a certain celeb talking about veganism I shall raise a glass of organic vegan prosecco to you for raising the profile of the vegan movement.

In case you were not aware wine, beer, cider may contain animal derivatives in the form of gelatine, albumin, casein, isinglass, fish oil and honey.... luckily most venues like The Crafty Dog in Chesterfield and Market Pub will list what beverages are Vegan so you can drink safely in the knowledge your plant-based diet is not compromised.

So, let me break it down for those of you interested in what Veganism is all about – 'Veganuary' is a charity inspiring people to try going Vegan for January with a view to continuing following a plant-based diet there on.

If you become 'Vegan' you do not automatically fall in love with Yoga, feel the need to burn incense in every room or have to like/love avocados although why wouldn't you?

Can one person make a difference?

How will I get enough protein?

Before I answer this if you are seriously considering giving this a go, I would memorise the answer because you will most likely get the 'protein' question asked to you ... every day - trying not to eye roll when you answer is a finely tuned skill you inherit almost like a Vegan initiation.

Now to tackle the protein question - when I gave up meat some 33 years ago there was very little choice for a then 7-year-old girl.

Today we are spoilt for choice with meat substitutes packed full of protein such as Seitan, Quorn, Soya, Tofu and Oumph to name a few. These can be used to replace mince in your lasagne, chicken in your burrito, meat in your salad, the list is endless. As well as these ingredients such as lentils, chickpeas, edamame and spelt are high on the list where protein is concerned.

Marks and Spencer’s are the latest large multi Grocers to join the movement launching a huge plant-based food section in stores nationwide.

They join Tesco’s, Iceland and Sainsburys. Aldi, Morrisons and the Co-op all offer small ranges, but these can differ from store to store in terms of what they stock and availability.

The big C - what about Cheese?

Tesco’s & Sainsburys are in my opinion the leaders with their own brand range of vegan cheese. Keep It Local The impact of choosing a small independent business.

In a few months’ time we exit the EU and I suspect we'll all be impacted in some way.

The price of paper used for printing S40 Local has increased, the trees that make the paper are grown in the EU and the increases my printer is seeing are passed down the chain to businesses, S40 Local included.

If our immediate economy is going to thrive, we need to carefully consider our purchasing decisions, so it seems ever more important to support our local businesses, our local economy and even, the wider UK. I’ve previously mentioned the ‘Tale of a Tenner’ video by White No Sugar Productions which was done for Totally Locally (hover your phone's camera over the quick code below to take you to the video on youtube - or google 'Tale of a Tenner') and it’s worth a watch. I plan to meet up with the team that run the Totally Locally scheme this year and find out more.

The simple story is told opposite in pictures, basically someone introduces a tenner into a local business and it's then passed around between others before ending back where it started, it never leaves the immediate economy.

Since I started S40 Local almost ten years ago it’s changed the way I think about the stuff we buy and what we can do to make a difference.

Previously, if I needed something, I’d just buy it from the most convenient place, a large retail chain, a supermarket or a faceless internet site, whichever was easiest and/or

cheapest.

Today things are different. Recently I needed new parts for my bike and rather than browse the internet I emailed my local bike shop, Igloo on Chatsworth Road. Rob came back to me with a price and could have the parts within the next couple of days. I called in to pick them up over the counter and had a chat, he was happy that I’d gone to him and I paid no more than I would online. Result - the profit generated stays in the local economy.

Looking ahead, when I come to needing a new bike my decision process will be about weighing up whether to shop local or to purchase a local brand which supports local manufacturers. We have a growing choice nearby, Cotic Bikes are based in Calver, they love Sheffield, use steel for their frames and plough a percentage of turnover back into local bike projects via Sheffield based advocacy group, Ride Sheffield, Sonder bikes are the in-house brand of Alpkit, a small company based just off the M1 at junction 26 and Forme bikes are based in Derby.

Ideally it would be great to buy from a local shop and support a local brand and I'll keep an eye out for options.

Being a lad from Nottingham, every young child had a family member who worked at Raleigh bikes. I remember picking up a bike from the Raleigh factory shop with my uncle Ron, bikes made in the UK. It now means a lot to me to support UK brands where possible.

Consider it a resolution, it's just one way I can make a small difference in 2019. The reason for the text is to try and encourage each and every one of us to consider where we might be able to make changes and help our immediate economy.

t's been a long time in the making but S41 Local is the latest community based, free magazine to deliver to the North of Chesterfield covering 6,000 properties in and around the S41 postal area.

For almost ten years S40 Local has delivered to properties to the South West of town and it's now time to deliver the same quality news and details of events happening locally to you.

The high quality magazine is delivered free of charge and is funded by the adverts it contains.

Standard What's On and Regular Event listings are free of charge. The same goes for any Classified advert for an item or collection of items under £200. We charge a small fee for anything over £200 of £5 which we collate and hand over to Ashgate Hospicecare at the end of each year.

We'd love to hear of your news, stories and anything you'd like to tell us... although we only do positive stuff!
