MESSAGE FROM THE MINISTER

South Africa’s Minister of Tourism, The Honourable Marthinus van Schalkwyk WELCOME. South Africa’s status as a premier global leisure destination is now firmly established. We have the capability and the means, the welcoming culture, and the varied, textured, beautiful destination that the world’s travellers – ever more demanding and discerning – want when they choose a destination. During the last five years, South Africa has outpaced the growth of all competitor locations in the leisure arrivals category. Foreign direct spend in rand terms has grown faster than arrivals, with an 11% per-annum growth rate. South Africa’s tourism industry has also managed to build on the momentum achieved during a record-breaking 2010 by growing a further 3,3% and attracting over 8,3 million international tourists in 2011. Tourism is poised to play a greater role than ever before, both on the global stage and in the lives of South Africans. However, tourism is about much more than the policies, statistics and objectives that often talked about. It is about people. Being a labour-intensive sector with a supply chain that cascades deep into the national economy and across all communities, tourism is positioned as a priority sector in Government’s planning and policy frameworks. In South Africa, as in the rest of the world, tourism remains one of the fastest-growing economic sectors, with huge potential for future job creation and social inclusion, in particular with regard to women and young people. Our country as a whole embodies a very distinct fabric of interwoven cultures and the world’s eyes have opened up to the beauty, diversity of experiences, and endless possibilities that South Africa has to offer like never before. The surge of visitors and sustained growth in tourism to South Africa since the World Cup is a testament to this and we continue to invest heavily in creating intrigue for our country’s broad spectrum of lifestyle experiences. We are indeed ‘a world in one country’, from our awe-inspiring environment through to the 17 Treve na Ro ad, Tou r i sm Ho use, Sunnysi d e Preto ri a 0001 Call Center: +27 (0) 860 121 929 Switch Board Number: +27 (0) 12 444 6000 www.tourism.gov.za

Message FROM THE SOUTH AFRICAN TOURISM CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER Welcome to South Africa — one of the world’s great golfing destinations Welcome to South Africa, a country of endless blue skies, plentiful sunshine, incredible flora and fauna, and warm, hospitable people. South Africa is also home to hundreds of golf courses, many of which have been designed by South African golfing legends past and present – we hope you enjoy playing on them during your visit to our country. Who wouldn’t want to play golf here? Where else in the world can you watch whales frolic as you putt or see warthogs scurry across the fairway? In South Africa’s Hermanus and on the border of the world-famous Kruger National Park both these experiences are a reality. In South Africa you can choose to tee off in tropical paradise in KwaZulu-Natal, be cradled by mountains in the Western Cape, or immerse yourself in the vibrant economic heart of the continent by catching a sunrise round in Johannesburg. This is a land of incredible diversity, and a round of golf will give you a taste of what we have to offer. I am sure you will be well looked after – we not only offer some of the world’s most scenic golf courses, but also world-class accommodation, extreme adventure sports, international award-winning wines, outstanding cuisines, and incredible spas and retreats. But the South African story is about more than natural beauty and world-class tourist offerings; the country’s ecological diversity is mirrored in the diversity of its people, who are only too willing to share their story with you. If you can, step off the golf course and let our people show you more. Take a township tour, visit a cultural village or experience a braai. Or visit one of our eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites – the Cradle of Humankind, for example, holds the world's largest concentration of hominid fossils; uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park hosts the most rock art paintings in Africa; and Mapungubwe echoes the sophistication of an ancient African kingdom. South Africa is a land of beauty and history, of cultural depth and unique heritage; it is a land of passionate and warm-hearted people. While you are here I urge you to take the time to find out more, to go deeper and to get closer. I guarantee you will not be disappointed. Thulani Nzima SOUTH AFRICAN TOURISM CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

FAIR TRADE TOURISM MESSAGE

Can sustainable tourism and leisure vacations be compatible – or do they lie at opposite ends of the travel spectrum? It is the firm belief of Fair Trade Tourism (FTT), a non-profit organisation established in South Africa in 2004 to promote responsible tourism, that the two not only can but should go hand in hand. Being a responsible traveller means having an amazing experience while at the same time giving back to the people and the environment you’ve visited. It is a commitment to honouring the people and places that made your holiday happen. Tourism businesses that adhere to the FTT standard use the FTT label as a way of signifying their commitment to fair and responsible tourism. This includes fair wages and working conditions, fair purchasing and operations, equitable distribution of benefits and respect for human rights, culture and the environment. A look at the list of FTT-certified tourism businesses found on the website www.fairtradetourism.org.za reveals a portfolio that includes everything from backpackers to 5-star lodges; township tours to whale watching cruises and a whole lot in-between. Can a golf course meet the criteria for FTT - certification? Have a look at the amazing practices of De Zalze Golf Club and answer that question for yourself! Can a boutique hotel in the heart of Jozi be considered Fair Trade? Check out The Peech Hotel for confirmation. What about a game reserve in the sands of the Kalahari? FTT certifies lodges from the prestigious, privately owned Tswalu Kalahari to the intimate, community owned! Xaus Lodge. The essence isn’t where you are but how you operate that makes all the difference. Why does this matter? Should a tourist care whether a business is operating sustainably? In fact, numerous studies have shown that tourists DO care – provided they don’t have to compromise on any of the other criteria that are important when planning their holiday, such as location, facilities and price. Have a look through the pages of this book and you will be convinced that your next leisure vacation can be sustainable. Now you can experience the best of South Africa and make a valuable contribution to the country and her people. Feel the difference – make a difference!

WESTERN CAPE: QUICK FACTS

The vast and arid Northern Cape is the largest province, taking up nearly a third of South Africa's land area. Yet it has the country's smallest population, around 1-million people, with an extremely roomy population density of three people per square kilometre. The province lies to the south of the mighty Orange River. Carnarvon is home to the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) and Sutherland the site of the southern hemisphere's largest astronomical observatory, SALT.

North West lies in the north of South Africa on the Botswana border, and fringed by the Kalahari desert in the west. It is known as the Platinum Province for the wealth of the metal it has underground. Two of SA's eight Unesco World Heritage sites fall within North West: the Vredefort Dome, the world's largest visible meteor-impact crater, and the Taung hominid fossil site, at the Cradle of Humankind.

Cape Town nestles in the curve of Table Mountain at the start of the hook-shaped Cape Peninsula, which ends in the jagged cliffs of Cape Point. The Western Cape lies on the southern tip of Africa. The most-southern point is at Cape Agulhas, some 200km east of Cape Town. Home to the smallest of the world's six floral kingdoms, the Cape Floral Kingdom, characterized by fynbos and the protea family, contains more endemic plant species than Europe does.

Gauteng, in Sesotho means "place of gold", and produces 40% of the world’s golf reserves. With only 1.4% of South Africa's land area, the tiny province of Gauteng punches way above its weight, contributing 33% to the national economy and a phenomenal 10% to the GDP of the entire African continent.

The Eastern Cape, lying on the southeastern South African coast, is a region of great natural beauty, particularly the rugged cliffs, rough seas and dense green bush of the stretch known as the Wild Coast. The province is the hub of South Africa's motor industry, earmarked as a key area for growth and economic development, with two harbours and four airports.

The Free State lies in the heart of South Africa, with the Kingdom of Lesotho nestling in the hollow of its bean-like shape. Lying between the Vaal River in the north and the Orange River in the south, the region is one of flat, rolling grassland and crop fields, rising to lovely sandstone mountains in the northeast. It is the granary of South Africa and houses the Supreme Court of Appeal.

Mpumalanga – "the place where the sun rises" – is a province with spectacular scenic beauty and an abundance of wildlife, lying in the northeast of South Africa, and is bordered by the countries of Mozambique and Swaziland to the east and Gauteng to the west. In the eastern region lies the southern half of the magnificent Kruger National Park, a nature reserve teeming with African wildlife in a total area roughly the size of Israel.

Limpopo is South Africa's northernmost province, lying within the great curve of the Limpopo River. It is a region of contrasts, from true bushveld country to majestic mountains, primeval indigenous forests, unspoilt wilderness and patchworks of farmland. Besides the Kruger National Park, there are 54 provincial reserves and several luxury private game reserves, and is home to the Mapungubwe Cultural Landscape, one of the country's eight World Heritage sites.

The garden province of South Africa, KwaZulu-Natal is a subtropical region of lush and well-watered valleys, washed by the warm Indian Ocean. One of the country's most popular tourist destinations, the province stretches from Port Edward in the south to the borders of Swaziland and Mozambique to the north. The sugar-cane plantations along the Indian Ocean coastal belt are the mainstay of KwaZulu-Natal's agriculture.

CITY OF EKURHULENI, EXECUTIVE MAYOR's MESSAGE The City of Ekurhuleni once again welcomes the SA Open. We are ready to welcome the golfers and visitors following this particular spectacle whenever it is hosted by our city. This tournament, which is one of the key highlights of the golfing calendar, gives the city an opportunity to showcase its world-class facilities to the rest of the world. Having hosted the 101st, and 102nd editions of the SA Open that it is coming back for the third consecutive time means we have been doing something right as a city along with all our partners. The SA Open forms part of the foundation of South African golf, and it is important that all South Africans are given an opportunity to share in its glory and history, hence we are so delighted to see it return to the City of Ekurhuleni. LOC ATIONS Alberton, Benoni, Boksburg, Brakpan, Daveyton, Duduza, Edenvale, Etwatwa, Germiston, Katlehong, Kempton, Kwa Thema, Nigel, Springs, Tembisa, Thokoza, Tsakane, Vosloorus FAC ILITIES Signature golf courses Art galleries Clinics Customer Care Centres Libraries Mini disposal sites Schools Conference centres Natural lakes and dams Over 300 wetlands

This year we hosted Africa’s first Airport Cities and Exhibition Conference in April, a clear indication that the Ekurhuleni Aerotropolis has hit the ground running in positioning itself as a world class city. Furthermore, for us to host the SA Open Championship confirms our capability to play host to major national and international events. Once again I wish to assure all our visitors that we are ready to welcome the world here during the SA Open and we have lined an even better social programme so that they get a full impression of the City of Ekurhuleni. A lot of interesting developments have taken place since the last event we hosted last year, and I am sure that our guests will find these latest developments very amusing and relaxing. As previously indicated, our hosting of the SA Open is in line with our triangular vision for sport, with mass participation at the base and elite championship sport at the apex. The SA Open sits at the apex of this triangle, as one of the world’s most prestigious tournaments for professional golfers. Our city has a history of producing, sporting stars, and therefore it is a matter of time before we start producing world class golfers especially if we continue to be home to such major golfing events. The other interesting development for us as a city in hosting an event like this, is that it gets to expose our aspiring golfers that they have a chance at cracking in the sport. The SA Open tournament has so much history and tradition hence we are so proud as the City of Ekurhuleni to be part of its rich history and heritage. Good luck to all players that grace our shores this year and may the best man win.

the city of cape town

Welcome to Tshwane, an African capital city of excellence that blends the depth of local culture with entertainment, wildlife, outdoor experiences and good weather all year round. Cape Town prides itself as being one of the most caring, inclusive well run cities in South Africa. WE are particularly proud of our immense natural beauty — from the shores of False Bay, to the wine lands of the Stellenbosch district, and everything in between.   The FIFA World Cup provided us with a valuable boost to start revamping our public transport service, and already more than 4 million passenger journeys have been reported on our MyCiTi bus network.   The bus routes connect the airport and the city centre with the Table View area along our West Coast. Future phases will include connecting routes to our beaches and sea-side play zones. Your oversized luggage, such as surf-boards and golf bags, are more than welcome on board. Eventually, this safe and effective network will cover the entire Cape Peninsula. This year Cape Town is the World Design Capital. We have

visible result was the relocation of the golf course on the Green Point Common, which now forms part of the Cape Town Stadium precinct. We have also invited students from the University of Cape Town to assist us with ideas on how to finish the unfinished freeway, which you will see in the City Centre. Greater Cape Town now has eight Blue Flag status beaches. The west coast beaches include Clifton 4th Beach, Camps Bay, Llandudno. Silwerstroom near Atlantis. The east coast beaches include Muizenberg, Mnandi and Strandfontein Beaches, as well as Bikini Beach Gordon Bay.   We hope you will enjoy your stay in the Mother City. We are happy to welcome you to our shores.

Explore the best of what Tshwane has to offer: • We are the only city in South Africa that boasts a 90 000-hectare Big 5 game reserve where the brave can walk with the lions. • We have the iconic Union Buildings, which is the site of presidential inaugurations. This symbolises the status of Tshwane as the administrative headquarters of the national government. • Freedom Park, the Voortrekker Monument and Solomon Mahlangu Square are heritage sites that capture important moments of South African history. • Tshwane is also the home of the Nan Hua Buddhist Temple, the largest Buddhist temple in the southern hemisphere and the only one in Africa. • The Tswaing Meteorite Crater is Tshwane’s best-kept astronomy secret and the only ecotourism destination of its kind in Africa. • The people of Tshwane have a long and proud association with the visual and performing arts. The State Theatre is situated in Tshwane and stages a continuous programme of local, national and international performances including drama, opera and ballet. • Tshwane also has one of the world’s largest urban nature reserves, the Rietvlei Nature Reserve. This is a unique retreat where many bird and animal species can be viewed on 3 800 hectares of open grassland. • Tshwane boasts elegant shopping malls, restaurants and accommodation establishments.

IGNITING EXCELLENCE

Forward on Tshwane Open Our vision for the City of Tshwane is to be a leading African capital city of excellence that empowers its community to prosper in a safe and healthy environment. In our quest to remake our beloved capital city, we continue to be hard at work with tangible, robust, strategic developments and programmes to ensure that the vision becomes a reality. The City of Tshwane recently launched its long term growth and development strategy dubbed Tshwane Vision 2055. Through this vision, we envisage that by 2055 our city should be a liveable, resilient and inclusive space in which residents enjoy a high quality of life, have access to social, economic and enhanced political freedom where citizens are partners in the development of the African Capital City of Excellence. We also realise that to propel Tshwane forward as a competitive city; we have to build Tshwane’s international image and reputation as the African Centre of Excellence and to encourage economic growth and development, thereby making the economy of Tshwane globally competitive and more focused. It is against this backdrop that the City introduced the inaugural Tshwane Open in 2013 with a view to positioning Tshwane globally; encourage investment, reposition the city as a preferred tourist destination, and profile the family-friendliness of the city’s attributes. The inaugural Tshwane Open was a huge success and resulted in significant exposure for both business investment and tourism. The hosting of the Tshwane Open is not simply an entertaining exercise for the city. It is, most importantly, a deliberate step towards reconciling the people and developing an integrated economic base. Golf tournaments have increasingly become economic catalysts to position cities. The tournament will expose Tshwane to some of the largest international platforms that will inevitably elevate the City’s status as the leading golf and tourist destination within South Africa. I implore you to be part of this remarkable experience by joining the people of Tshwane in various parts of our city for a real taste of vibrancy, diversification and jovial culture as we welcome the world to the capital city.Purchase your Tshwane open hospitality packages or daily access tickets. For more info please log on www.tshwaneopen.co.za The Tshwane Open golf tournament is co-sanctioned by Sunshine Tour and the European Tour. MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE MAYOR, CITY OF JOBURG South Africa prides itself with a weather that allows for playing golf through out the year. Summer is a time when South Africa becomes the premier golfing destination on the African continent for the European and Sunshine Circuits. Early in the new year, some of the most prominent local and international names in the world of golf, make their pilgrimage to the City of Joburg. This is the time for them to try and wrestle for the 1, 3 million Euros prize-money in the City’s annual edition of the Joburg Open. February 2014 will see the City of Johannesburg host the (eighth) 8th consecutive edition of the prestigious Joburg Open at the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club. This tournament is known not only for the pool of big name golfers who participate but also for giving exciting new talent an opportunity to display their flair on an international stage. It is for this main reason, therefore, the City of Joburg looks forward to welcoming the 2014 golfers on our great fairways and greens of a World-Class African City. Over the years, our South African golfers have made the country proud by ensuring regular victories in the tournament since its inception. Charl Schwartzel won in 2010 and 2011; Branden Grace in 2012; Ariel Canete of Argentina (2007), Andersen Hansen of Denmark in 2009. With more than 315-million viewers from around the globe tuning in to watch the tournament every year, the Joburg Open presents an excellent opportunity for us to showcase the City’s incredible infrastructure. It also markets the City as a destination for tourism, investment and business, to a global audience. Hosting this important summit also signals to the international community that Johannesburg has classical facilities and ability to host important events and can be trusted to manage such events successfully. Having hosted the final of the Africa Cup on Nations (AFCON) in early February 2013, the City further followed with major international conferences, the Metropolis Summit, One Young World, the 4th World Anti-Doping Association Summit, just to name a few. 2014 promises a great start for the City of Joburg, together with its partners and sponsors. Local and international visitors of both the Joburg Open and the C40 Cities Summit early in the year can expect nothing less than exciting time from the home of world class facilities and events in the African continent. the SUNSHINE TOUR The Sunshine Tour is one of six founding professional golf tours that makes up the International Federation of PGA Tours. BASED in South Africa, with several tournaments in neighbouring African states, the Sunshine Tour stages professional tournaments throughout the year. It’s flagship events include the venerable SA Open Championship, the Telkom PGA Championship and SA Masters, while it now has seven tournaments that are cosanctioned with the PGA European Tour. The Sunshine Tour has been the starting point for many professionals who have gone on to dominate the world professional golf and, since World War II, only the USA has produced more Major victories than South Africa. Lead by such icons of the game as Gary Player, Ernie Els and Retief Goosen, the Sunshine Tour continues to produce world-beating professionals with thelikes of Charl Schwartzel, Louis Oosthuizen and Branden Grace the latest to break through on the world stage. These seven co-sanctioned events include the Tour's longest-serving sponsor's Alfred Dunhill Championship, as well as new events in the Nelson Mandela Championship and the Tshwane Open. Also included for the first time as a co-sanctioned event is the revitalised Nedbank Golf Challenge, which in 2013 features an expanded field of 30 of the world's leading professionals competing for a record prize fund of $6.5million. Divided into a summer and winter "swing", the Sunshine Tour stages tournaments year-round, with the bigger prize-money events taking place in the summer months from October through March. During the winter months, smaller three-round events with an emphasis on Pro-Am participation take place, with many smaller centres around South Africa being visited. From 2012, these three-round events have been awarded Official World Ranking points, giving South African “stay-at-home” professionals opportunities to improve their world standing and contributing towards being able to qualify for Majors and World Golf Championship events. For visitors to South Africa, professional golf tournaments are easily accessed and boast a standard of play every bit as good as any of the major Tours around the world. Nestled in the heart of the beautiful valley on the outskirts of Stellenbosch, lies the prestigious De Zalze Winelands Golf Estate, home of De Zalze Golf Club. The name De Zalze originates from the early wine farmers who produced wines on three adjoining farms, namely Kleine Zalze, Groote Zalze and De Vleie.

The oak-lined Blaauwklippen River winds its way through the golf estate and comes into play at various intervals. Renowned golf course architect, Peter Matkovich, designed the De Zalze Golf Course, making most of the stunning setting while placing a premium on accuracy.

De Zalze Golf Club has the complete Winelands experience and offers you a great golf course, fantastic 19th hole views, fabulous food, great wines and stylish on-site lodge accommodation making us the preferred all-in-one destination in our region. We have beautiful vineyards, olive groves and lavender fields adjacent to most fairways creating a natural buffer between golf and residences.

A variety of long and short holes, from drivable par fours to monster par fives, make for an enjoyable round with the old adage ‘risk and reward’ringing in your ears. The golf course welcomes visitors 7 days a week and remains one of the most popular venues for golfers who wish to experience golf in the Winelands. Boasting a thatched Cape Dutch style cluhouse, facilities include the Terrace Restaurant, lounge and bar, which stock a fine selection of single malt whiskies.

The landscape is all so natural with the meandering Blaauwklippen river and the incredible views of the surrounding mountains making this Winelands experience very unique. De Zalze Golf course offers a fine mix of parkland holes moving up and down the undulating valley, its main defences being the water features on several of the holes.

The Golf Lifestyle Shop has an extensive range of clothing and golf accessories and also supplies clubs and carts for hire to all guests and visitors from abroad. De Zalze Golf Club is also the first golf club in South Africa and the world to be Fair Trade accredited by Fair Trade and Tourism South Africa, a testimony to their sustainable triple bottom line operating model.

DEVONVALE is nicknamed “Heaven Vale”. The magnificent 18-hole championship golf course, designed by Ken Elkin, needs little introduction offering a regular challenge to both local and international golfers. There is abundant bird life in the indigenous flora around the kikuyu fairways, bent greens and water features. Panoramic vistas of the surrounding vineyards and mountains create a peaceful golfing experience. Sample superb meals from a diverse menu prepared by a team of chefs at

Devonvale’s restaurant accompanied by a bottle of Provoyeur Wine from the estate. Accommodation options include hotel accommodation, self-catering apartments and holiday homes. Visitors are most welcome and we encourage you to come and enjoy our magnificent course, quality facilities and our friendly hospitality.   Royal Cape is without doubt one of the best and most challenging courses to play both in the Western Cape and the country. It is a course of championship stature, first played in 1906.   As observers and custodians of the traditions of the wonderful game, this Royal club, has a keen eye on the future. We accept and embrace the changing of the times and we strive to maintain an enjoyable balance of traditional values and the modern lifestyle.   The South African Open has been hosted ten times, the first in 1910. In 1996 Ernie Els birdied the last three holes to win by one shot. Gary Player won in 1965 when he became the first player to break 70 in all four rounds, a record.

The clubhouse retains its old style charm and traditional design, modernized many times since 1923. The course is on flat terrain. Playing at Royal Cape is subject to three of nature’s beguiling offerings: a near constant wind to challenge, sweeping mountain views to charm you and water features to ensnare you, playing to a championship par 72.   Tree lined with narrow fairways and subtle USGA spec built greens, Royal presents a traditional test of golf, although the numerous ponds and lakes teeming with bird life provide beauty and distraction along the way.   Facing the course are the lounge, Centenary room and members bar as well as the gallery corridor with its many framed photographs, paintings and memorabilia celebrating the Club’s long history.Apart from providing rest and refreshment for golfers, the clubhouse is also frequently called upon for functions ranging from formal dinners to large parties and other events.

South African National Parks

“Connecting to society” South African National Parks is the custodian of conservation in twenty one National Parks. This body has been able to revolutionalise the way conservation is done in the 21st century by being able to have a balance of conservation as well as generating operating income from its tourism operations. The organization has been in existence for over 80 years. The history is much like that of the country in that the majority of South Africans were not allowed into the Parks as tourists but only as laborers and servants. Communities were chased away from their land to make way for these protected areas without compensation and therefore creating resentment towards the parks. The dawn of democracy meant a change in the way conservation management should be approached. Livelihoods were destroyed in the old era but the new SANParks has come up with innovative ways in which communities can derive value from the Parks. These are some of the initiatives that take place annually throughout the country: SANParks week gives communities free access into the Parks and educates them about the value of conservation.Kids in the Park is another innovation that introduces children to conservation and issues around the importance of having these protected areas. SANParks has also introduced a levy in which tourists pay into a fund that helps the organization to empower communities through its CSI projects. The difference of this initiative is that the communities themselves identify their needs instead of SANParks imposing a project onto them. Thus far an administration block at a High School has been built, a science lab, mobile library and a computer center. SANParks has embarked on a responsible tourism strategy that will see communities living adjacent the Parks benefitting from tourist activities. The strategy has been approved and is set to be implemented as soon as possible. Though facing one of the biggest conservation challenges of the 21st century, that of rhino poaching, the organization realizes that one of the effective means to stop this scourge, is to partner with communities. SANParks aims to continue on this trajectory of connecting to society in order to have healthy and profitable Parks.

We were in my personal favourite leopard spot, but despite whatever spot you are in, leopard are far from guaranteed. We took the western fence line, a route well-travelled by one of the dominant males of the area. A Taste of Fine Vine

The South Africa wine industry is proud of our position to maintaining our position as a world leader in eco-sustainability. THE BIODIVERSITY AND WINE INITIATIVE (BWI), a partnership between wine producers and the wine sector seeks to protect the highly threatened Cape Floral Kingdom from further loss. Set aside for conservation are some 132 000 ha, significantly more than the 101 000 ha comprising our national vineyard. More recently our sustainability focus extends to include social sustainability. We have created the framework for the wine world’s first ethical seal. This aims to fast-track the implementation of fair labour practices on our wine farms and in the cellars. Our wines are showing ever-increasing finesse and complexity. Many estates attract extremely positive critical attention to advance our standing as a national producer of excellence across the pricing continuum. We have also broadened the scope of our offerings to accommodate the demand for greater flavour sophistication at the entry level, with lower-alcohol content, as well as increasing the range of sparkling wine products. As current chairman of the Cape Winemakers Guild, I truly encompass our philosophy of constantly trying to raise the standard of the South African Wine Industry. As a dynamic team, we strive to ensure our wines stand out amongst the best in the world. Our main goal is to extract the full potential from our unique South African terroir and to set new world-class benchmarks for South African and indeed the world’s wine production standards. It gives me great pleasure to be involved in the ever-growing and exceptional South African Wine Industry. I believe that through continuously striving for perfection and maintaining our philosophy of being a world-class contender, we are fast becoming one of the great wine and tourist destinations in the world.

LOCATION Western Cape Annandale Road, GROOT CONSTANTIA the Cape’s oldest and most famous wine farms dating back to. The Groot Constantia trademark is one of the oldest surviving trademarks in the world today serving as a testimony of continuous quality wine production over centuries. Therefore, wines and heritage remain at the heart of the Constantia Valley.   The land was granted to Simon van der Stel, 891 morgen (about 763 hectares), situated behind Table Mountain, which he named “Constantia”. The farm had several owners of which two were female. The Cloete family put Groot Constantia on the map from 1778 to 1885. Constantia wine was coveted across the globe and those who were fortunate enough to taste it soon refused to settle for anything less. Members of the British Royal House, Napoleon Bonaparte, King Louis Philippe of France, Frederick (The Great) of Prussia, the Lord Seventeen of the VOC, governors, admirals, captains, and many other dignitaries coveted the Constantia label.Considering that they have been making wine for 325 years from some of the very first vines

planted in the Cape – in what can only be described as the perfect natural conditions and under the watchful eye of the winemakers – it becomes clear why Groot Constantia wines have become legendary and unique. The estate today, covers 170 hectares, of which 96 hectares is under vines. Over the last 10 years Groot Constantia has won 65 gold medals for a variety of its wines.   Groot Constantia stands as a pinion of excellence for the South African wine industry and is an ideal model for the preservation of the cultural and historical heritage of the country. The farm has a wonderful array of things to do and see: visit the Manor House and Cloete Cellar dating back to 1791. Daily cellar tours and wine tasting as well as guided vineyard tours, two outstanding restaurants (Simon’s and Jonkershuis), as well as an art gallery displaying the paintings of local artists. HAUTE CABRIÈRE is a wine farm steeped in history and local lore. Originally granted to a French Huguenot farmer, Pierre Jourdan, on the 22 December 1694, it has been part of the Franschhoek Wine Valley fabric for over 300 years. Being a pioneer is intrinsic to Haute Cabrière and throughout its development and evolution it has always remained true to this heritage.

after the original Haute Cabrière trailblazer and founder, Pierre Jourdan. Comprised of two farms, situated on opposite ends of the breathtaking Franschhoek Wine Valley, Haute Cabrière is something extraordinary. A rich history, a whimsical setting, a seductive approach to wine and a magnetic proprietor ensure that Haute Cabrière is a decadent affair for any visitor.

In 1982, with a pioneering legacy in mind, the vineyards were replanted in the tradition of the Champagne. The wines and Cap Classiques that Haute Cabrière now create are the result of the this pivotal decision made over 28 years ago: To focus only on the classic Chardonnay and Pinot Noir cultivars.

WELLNESS

MESSAGE from the South AfricaN SPA ASSOCIATION

In the past science and spas have been seen as two ideas from opposite ends of the spectrum. However, the current trend in the spa industry seems to be moving away from pure relaxation and pampering towards the scientific approach. Although many people still associate spas with pampering, spas are becoming an integral part of a wellness routine, spa treatments can help maintain mental, physical and emotional well being. With healthcare in a global crisis, prevention of illness has moved to the forefront on the world health stage and the spa industry’s role in prevention-focused health care has become paramount. In a global survey, Spa Finder – the world's largest spa and wellness media and marketing company recognised that there’s a growing body of medical evidence about the proven benefits of spa treatments like massage, meditation, acupuncture, hydrotherapy, exercise, etc. The New York Times recently reported on a Cedars-Sinai study that revealed a 45-minute massage resulted in a significant decrease in stress hormones, while boosting immunity. Another study in the American Journal of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation documented that pain caused by knee osteoarthritis was significantly alleviated by two weeks of spa therapy, including mud-packs and mineral-water baths. Spas have become places focused on exercise, eating healthfully, stress reduction, therapeutic body treatments, the mind/body connection and balance. And it is therefore important that the spa experience is of a high quality and result focused. The South African Spa Association is the ambassador for the spa industry, with representation in all aspects related to spas, such as health and wellness, tourism and hospitality, education and training. The SA Spa Association provides the consumer with peace of mind when visiting a member spa, as all spas conform to international quality standards, staff qualifications and training is maintained and a code of ethics upheld. A full list of member spas is available on the SA Spa Association Website: www.saspaassociation.co.za So, invest in your health and visit a spa today.

Dr Nadine de Freitas Executive Director South African Spa Association

The South African Spa Association provides consumer protection by assessing each spa facility according to international criteria, allowing you peace of mind when visiting a spa bearing their logo.
