MESSAGE FROM THE MINISTER South Africa’s global competitiveness as a tourist destination is due largely to our irresistible package that combines scenic beauty, great weather for the outdoors and a fantastic mix of leisure activities. Our unrivalled golf offering is part of this mix, making South Africa a destination that features on the bucket list of millions of golfers around the world. It’s not difficult to understand why. Those of us who are privileged to call South Africa home, and who have teed up on one of our courses, know the joy of swinging a club in South Africa. We have a diverse range of golf experiences, from the Gary Player Country Club in the north to Arabella Golf Club in the south. There’s the Legend Golf and Safari Resort in Limpopo, the only course on earth where you take a helicopter to tee off from the 18th hole. They are all beautifully manicured and professionally managed. Each has its own unique charm, and each guarantees a magnificent day of golfing. Add to this the outstanding value for money that our destination offers and the warm, friendly welcome you will enjoy when you join the locals at the 19th hole, and you have a formula that very few destinations on earth can beat. There’s more to golf than tourism in South Africa. This niche sector makes a valuable contribution to job creation, helps to spur economic growth, and attracts foreign spend that is invested into social infrastructure that improves the lives of all our people. I welcome all golfers to South Africa with pride and pleasure. While you are here, we hope that you will sample the wide range of other leisure activities we offer, experience our cultural diversity, and enjoy the sight of wildlife roaming freely through the African bush. FOREWARD BY FAIR TRADE TOURISM Fair Trade Tourism is a leading South African non-profit organisation promoting responsible tourism development. It grows awareness about responsible tourism to travellers, assists tourism businesses to operate more sustainably and facilitates a globally recognised certification programme, the first in Africa, which is recognised by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council. Fair Trade Tourism pioneered its certification programme more than a decade ago and is now expanding its best practice standards in responsible, sustainable tourism outside of South Africa. It also encourages mainstream and specialist tour operators to package and sell Fair Trade Holidays which incorporate Fair Trade Tourism certified products. Today Fair Trade Tourism is a truly African organisation and includes certified businesses in Madagascar and Mozambique. In July 2015, Fair Trade Tourism signed a Mutual Recognition Agreement with the Seychelles Sustainable Tourism Label. This agreement enables six of the Indian Ocean island nation’s leading hotels to be marketed under the Fair Trade Holiday brand, paving the way for similar agreements throughout the region. Currently South Africa and Africa face extreme challenges. The broader tourism development and encouraging synergy with our African counterparts is an indication that awareness for responsible, sustainable tourism practices is growing in our region, as well as globally. At the end of the day, it’s all about the visitor. Selecting a Fair Trade Tourism certified business or participating in a Fair Trade Holiday ensures their holidays ultimately benefit local communities and economies. This contributes to peace of mind for the traveller as they know that the services and facilities they use are operated ethically and in a socially and environmentally responsible manner. The Fair Trade Tourism label tells you that member businesses are committed to making a real difference to both people and planet, allowing travellers to have the most fulfilling holiday possible.

NATIONAL ANTHEM Nkosi Sekelel’ iAfrika and Die Stem/The Call of South Africa were merged in 1997 to form the current anthem. It is the only neo-modal national anthem in the world, by virtue of being the only one that starts in one key and finishes in another. The lyrics employ the five most populous of South Africa’s eleven official languages – IsiXhosa (first stanza, first two lines), IsiZulu (first stanza, last two lines), Seotho (second stanza), Afrikaans (third stanza) and English (final stanza).

ELECTRICITY The South African electricity supply is 220/230 volts AC 50 HZ. With a few exceptions (in deep rural areas) electricity is available almost everywhere. Presently the country experiences ‘load shedding’ and you may find yourself in the dark. Keep a torch handy. During these times enjoy the quieter side of life and make the time to experience our incredible night sky. HEALTH AND SAFETY South Africa is well-known for its medical facilities. There are many world-class private hospitals and medical centres around the country, especially in the urban areas. We also have specialised expertise and world renowned doctors for organ transplants, cosmetic- and complex surgery. Most of South Africa is malaria-free, but always check with the game reserves you’re planning to visit and take precautions if necessary. Generally avoid swimming in still pools, stagnant water and rivers flowing east to the Indian Ocean, as they are likely to carry Bilharzia. Make sure you have the latest safety tips from the establishment where you will be staying and take common sense precautions as you would when travelling anywhere.

Then travel onwards to glittering Sun City Resort for world-class live entertainment, fun in the Valley of Waves, golf on the Gary Player and Desert golf courses, and gaming. Stay over in luxury hotels including the magnificent Palace of the Lost City. The “Pilanesberg National Park Alkaline Ring Complex” was formed by volcanic eruptions some 1 200-million years ago. Pilanesberg Game Reserve is set on the eroded vestiges of one of the world’s three alkaline volcanic craters, that was proclaimed a reserve in 1979. The rugged “Bushveld” landscape, well-watered valleys and attractive dwelling sites have suited human settlement for thousands of years. The malaria-free, 55 000 hectare Park offers safari sightings from aardvark to zebra, leopard, lion, black and white rhino, buffalo and elephant. Springbok, brown hyaena, the red-eyed bulbul, and camel thorn trees usually found in arid areas, co-habitting with moist-area limited impala, black-eyed bulbul and Cape chestnut trees. Common species exist with endemic species such as the nocturnal brown hyena, the fleetfooted cheetah, the majestic sable, as well as giraffe, zebra, hippo and crocodile. Pre-sunrise and postsunset drives are not always possible owing to gate opening and closure times.

The Madikwe Game Reserve, situated against the Botswana border, 90 kilometres north of Zeerust, covers 75 000 hectare of bushland vegetation. Madikwe is home to 66 mammal species including the Big Five and 300 resident and migrant bird species as well as raptors. It is one of South Africa’s largest game reserves, and home to cheetah, wild dog, hyena, lion, elephant, black and white rhino, buffalo, zebra, giraffe and many antelope species. Bush walks, day or night game drives, accompanied by a qualified guide, bring every safari to life. Madikwe is run as a joint venture between the state, private sector and local communities living on the reserve borders. Taung, in the Bophirima Region, at “The Place of the Lion”, is named after chief Tau of the Bataung people who settled here in the 18th century. In 1924 Professor Dart discovered a fossilised child skull, an early hominid, naming it “Australopithecus africanus” or ‘southern ape of Africa’. Today, part of the UNESCO Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site, this location displays a tribute monument. Find it along the 45 kilometres Taung Heritage Route. Nearby is an abandoned mine tunnel, open to visitors wanting to venture into the age-old limestone mountains. Get insight to our hominid forefathers. See natural wonders, such as a limestone waterfall, the Blue Pools, as well as a collection of natural rock basins, streams and caves in a lush river valley. Mining and agriculture are the Bophirima Region’s two principle economies, earning it the pseudonym the “Texas of South Africa”. The Cradle of Humankind lies mainly in Gauteng with extension in the North West Province, and covers 47 000 hectares. The site comprises a strip of a dozen dolomitic limestone caves containing the fossilised hominids and remains of ancient forms of animals, plants and most importantly, hominids. The dolomite in which the caves formed, started out as coral reefs

Did you know about the Khoi-San? The term ‘Khoisan’ includes both the Khoikhoi and the San or ‘Bushmen’. These people lived throughout Southern Africa for thousands of years, leaving a remarkable legacy of art and culture. Ancient history is displayed on the walls of caves in the regions the San people occupied. Many of these caves are located in the Cederberg, Nardouwsberg, Koue Bokkeveld and Olifants River Valley. The pigments used in their paintings were a range of red and yellow oxides, manganese dioxide used for black, and compounds of calcium or magnesium for white. To produce paint, the pigments were mixed with a binding agent such as egg white, plant sap, urine or blood. Paint was applied using feathers, sticks or fingers depicting hunting or gathering processions, therianthropes (half-animal half-human figures) and Shamanistic entoptic shapes. Every day we pay tribute to the Khoi-San language in both English and Afrikaans. Some commonly used Khoisan names for geographical places include OuteniQua, Karoo, Gamka, Namaqualand and Keiskamma. Names of animals include gogga, koedoe, kwagga, geitjie. Plant names include boegoe, dagga, koekemakranka, karree and names of things include karos and kierie. Some adorable words are abba, kamma, eina and aitsa.

Filled with heart-stopping excitement of big game viewing, the supreme tranquillity and the serenity of an untouched delta provides extraordinary experiences. Moremi Game Reserve is the richest and most diverse ecosystem on the continent. Herbivore and carnivore species and over 400 bird species, many migratory and some endangered, makes exploring Moremi’s many loops and trails delightfully inspiring.

The Central Kalahari Game Reserve is the second largest wildlife reserve in the world. Tswalu Reserve and Phofu Eco-Safari Lodge are prefect gateways to this region. One of Africa’s most beautiful rivers, the Chobe River supports a diversity and concentration of wildlife and is famous for its large herds of elephant and Cape Buffalo. One of the greatest mysteries is the Savuté Channel itself. Over the past 100 years it has inexplicably dried up and recommenced its flow several times. For this reason there are numerous dead trees lining the channel. Largely uninhabited by humans, the Makgadikgadi, with its stark, flat, featureless terrain stretches seemingly to eternity, forming a series of pans. At Sowa and Nata Sanctuaries when there is water, thousands of flamingos, pelicans, ducks and geese congregate providing an overwhelming spectacle. There are quaint restaurants, cafes, art galleries, museums, a snake park and aquarium to explore. It is the gateway to the Skeleton Coast. Visit the Cape Cross Seal Colony. The Welwitschia drive reveals some of the Namib’s fauna and flora. Search for the unique Desert Rose which requires precipitation for growth. Whether rain or fog, it must always be less than the evaporation. If this is exceeded, the surplus moisture dissolves the gypsum accumulations and no

crystals form. The desert roses will subsequently wilt and die back to a shapeless jumble of chemicals in the sand. Sandboard some of the world’s highest dunes. The Swakopmund Salt Works and Walvis Bay Lagoon, in season, are frequented by thousands of flamingos. If silence could roar, you will be surprised to hear its endless quietness touch the core of your soul. The Namib Desert, the world’s oldest and largest desert, includes Africa’s largest game park, the Namib Naukluft National Park. Sossusvlei, a salt and clay pan, hosts red sand. SOUTH AFRICAN GOLF ASSOCIATION South Africa is blessed with some of the most beautiful golf courses in the world, many of which have been designed by golfing greats both past and present. There are a multitude of golf courses throughout South Africa which offer the golfer a memorable golfing experience, many of which have first class accommodation establishments on or near the courses. This provides the golfer the best of both worlds – a golfing experience second to none and sought out by tourists from around the world. Whilst there are many well-known and superb Golf courses in South Africa there are some rural courses that sincerely deserve a visit. Here the golfer can enjoy the tranquillities of the country coupled with the visual delights of the full spectrum of wildlife on, or in the surrounds, of the course being played. Golf has a long proud tradition in South Africa and that history would not have been possible without the thousands of volunteers who have provided vast amounts of time and effort along the way. With the new structures under Golf RSA, we will, for the first time, amalgamate the South African Golf Association (SAGA), Women's Golf South Africa (WGSA) and the South African Disabled Golf Association (SADGA) with the purpose of combining resources and strengths to further amateur golf. There is no doubt that golf in this country will continue to rely on the generosity and kindness of those who unselfishly provide their time and expertise on a voluntary basis. We are fortunate to have a wealth of experience and knowledge in South Africa and Golf RSA will be seeking to work together with all parties, pooling our resources and collaborating for the good of amateur golf in South Africa. Ultimately, the vision of Golf RSA is to be a ‘world class servant of amateur golf’. Golf RSA is proud and honoured to be associated with this publication and wish all readers a proudly South African golfing experience along with the other delights the book has to offer. We hope that our visitors will come back time and time again to enjoy the splendour of golfing in South Africa. Gerhard Conradie PRESIDENT South African Golf Association

sunshine tour The Sunshine Tour is one of six founding professional golf tours that makes up the International Federation of PGA Tours. Based in South Africa, with several tournaments in neighbouring African states, the Sunshine Tour stages professional tournaments throughout the year. It’s flagship events include the venerable SA Open Championship, the Telkom PGA Championship and SA Masters, while it has five tournaments that are co-sanctioned with the PGA European Tour. The Sunshine Tour has been the starting point for many professionals who have gone on to dominate the world of professional golf and, since World War II, only the USA has produced more Major victories than South Africa. Led by such icons of the game as Gary Player, Ernie Els and Retief Goosen, the Sunshine Tour continues to produce world-beating professionals with the likes of Charl Schwartzel, Louis Oosthuizen and Branden Grace the latest to break through on the world stage. These seven co-sanctioned events include the Tour’s longest-serving sponsor’s Alfred Dunhill Championship, as well as newer events such as the Tshwane Open. Also included as a co-sanctioned event is the Nedbank Golf Challenge, which in 2013 featured an expanded field of 30 of the world’s leading professionals competing for a record prize fund of $6.5-million. New in 2015 was the first-ever tri-sanctioned event with the Asian and European Tours, the AfrAsia Mauritius Open which was played at Heritage Golf Club in Mauritius and will move to Four Seasons Anahita in 2016. Divided into a summer and winter “swing”, the Sunshine Tour stages tournaments year-round, with the bigger prize money events taking place in the summer months from October through March. During the winter months, smaller three-round events with an emphasis on Pro-Am participation take place, with many smaller centres around South Africa being visited. From 2012, these three-round events have been awarded Official World Ranking points, giving South African “stay-at-home” professionals opportunities to improve their world standing and contributing towards being able to qualify for Majors and World Golf Championship events. For visitors to South Africa, professional golf tournaments are easily accessed and boast a standard of play every bit as good as any of the major Tours around the world. Since its opening in 1922, and now nearly 90 years later, Durban Country Club’s par-72, 6 157 metre course has been considered one of South Africa’s finest. The original design by Laurie Waters and George, enjoys the unique claim of being rated the only course on the African continent in the Top 100 Golf Courses of the World by Golf Magazine (USA). The par-5, third hole is rated the best third in the world. Durban Country Club is a championship course. The excellent layout has been chosen as host the South African Open 16 times including the centenary South African Open. Gary Player won this event six times, whilst Ernie Els won his third Open title here. A combination of lush vegetation, sand dunes and stunning views of the Indian Ocean make this course both scenic and challenging. The design includes a pleasant mix of tall trees, thick bush, severe slopes and punishing bunkers, thus providing even the most

discerning golfer with a demanding round of golf. It is a shot maker’s course requiring careful player strategy. The sister course, Beachwood Country Club merged with Durban Country Club in March 1993. Today it is rated 29th in the Golf Digest Top 100 Courses in South Africa. The Gary Player Design Group was commissioned with the course upgrade and Paspalum greens were planted, the fairways length has been extended where possible in keeping with the dunes layout. There are 41 bunkers around the greens and 33 fairway bunkers, with water hazards on several holes. In 1996 the club house was upgraded. Durban Country Club provides the golfer with the opportunity to experience one of the finest and most unique golf courses. This Club is the venue of choice for many important celebrations throughout its rich history, and looks forward to welcoming you to the courses and select location for your next function.

The unsung fabric of South African Golf You may have heard of Nomads and of the immense contribution that Nomads Golf Club makes to South African Golf and within our local communities. The Nomads Golf Club was founded in 1960. Their aims and objectives serve to gather and bind like-minded individuals in a common desire to: • provide an opportunity for persons of all walks of life to meet at least once a month in order to make new and nurture old friendships through playing a game of golf; • encourage, promote, foster and support the game of Golf in Southern Africa through their Furtherance of Golf Nomads Foundation; • to distribute tangible assets to charitable causes and assist persons, regardless of race, colour or creed, in less fortunate positions through their Andrew Mentis Nomads Foundation. The Nomads commitment reflects in their motto “Through golf the remembrance of others”. Today South Africa boasts 12 active and viable Nomads clubs and echoed in their name is the fact that they have ‘no home’ Golf course, but rely on the support of local formal clubs in their areas to host their monthly games. nomads golf club internationally and Nomads Clubs are firmly established in Zimbabwe, Botswana, Australia, New Zealand, the UK and Swaziland. There are inter-club games throughout the year. In March, qualifying members meet for the annual National Tournament of which the 2016 host is Knysna Golf Club. More than 350 local and international Nomads members compete. Each plays four games over six days and scoring is on a Medal Stableford basis. Since 1968 Nomads has donated over R30-million in tangible assets to their designated charities. The Nomads members also raise funds for the furtherance of golf by providing scoring services (Golforama) to the Southern African Tour, at professional golf events on the South African summer and winter Tours, including events co-sanctioned by the European Tour and Ladies European Tour. Through the Furtherance of Golf programme, more than R2-million a year is raised for distribution for the development of the game in Southern Africa, specifically for the benefit

This testing links/parkland layout has some of the best bent greens, with year round, constantly smooth putting surfaces. A flat and easy-walking course, players of all levels can enjoy an affordable and challenging golfing experience. There are many tidal water hazards on 12-holes, raised undulating greens, strategic bunkers, and being a sea level, the course play is much longer than the 5 820 metres on the card. Situated on the banks of Knysna Lagoon with many tidal inlets, the course hosts a variety of bird species, including the Blacksmith Lapwing, cormorants, spoonbills, little egrets, avocets, weavers and fiscal shrikes. Often Fish Eagles, forest buzzards, hadedas and sacred ibis soar above. In addition to a bright, spacious bar area and adjoining terrace, there’s a welcoming halfway house offering meals, snacks and refreshments for golfers and guests. The club's friendly, professional team provides high quality catering for every occasion, seating up to 100 for formal functions, and cocktail parties for up to 120 guests. There’s excellent change rooms facilities. Extensive

practice facilities include two putting greens, a dedicated chipping green, a longer 50 metres chipping area and a practice bunker. Founded in 1909, Knysna Golf Club’s first nine holes longest fairway was 200 yards with grit greens and had no clubhouse. Course maintenance was done single handed, equipped only with hand tools, wheelbarrow, and a storage tin shanty. On Sundays the field sometimes trebled to six. In 1929, after expropriation the club moved to the ‘Goat Course’, laid out over very steep and undulating terrain. Green fees were a sixpence. Each member carried a stinkwood scraper to smooth a line to the hole on the grit greens. Knysna Golf Club’s second course was started on Leisure Isle in 1935. In the 1940’s the Club drew up plans to build nine holes on the higher ground at Hunters Home and opened this course in 1951. In 1995 bent grass green trials were done. New buildings and facilities were completed in 2007. In 2010 a devastating fire destroyed the clubhouse. Officially re-opened in 2011, today Knysna Golf Club boasts one of the most stylish and welldesigned clubhouse environments in the Southern Cape. Today the club has more than 1 100 members, and look forward to welcoming you.

Clovelly Country Club with its rich history has over the years earned a reputation as being one of the friendliest courses. The hospitable staff make any visitor feel at home. A relatively short course at 5 869 metres makes for a fun round of golf. There are a great deal of risk reward holes that really entice the player to go for it! But don’t be fooled, the course can be tricky when the prevailing South East wind blows through the Silvermine Valley. Out of bounds is always lurking on the left with tight tree-lined fairways and strategically placed bunkers demand accuracy off the tee. Clovelly Country Club was awarded Golf Course of the Month in September of 2014. It is ranked number 55 in the top 100 courses to play in South Africa. It boasts one of the most attractive clubhouses in the country and is captured in its best light as one tees it up on the

Clovelly Country Club boasts a classic parklands layout but what truly sets this club apart from the rest, is the peace and quiet. There are no through roads, no highways and houses on the course. Set within the Nature Reserve of the Silvermine Valley, one can be sure to see an abundance of bird life. The popularity of the course sees as many as 52 000 rounds of golf being played in a year. royal cape golf club

From rugged to Royal — South Africa's first golf club spanning a 130 years golf tradition. Visitors are most welcome and we encourage you to come and enjoy our magnificent course, quality facilities and our friendly hospitality.

The course is on flat terrain. Playing at Royal Cape is subject to three of nature’s beguiling offerings: a near constant wind to challenge, sweeping mountain views to charm you and water features to ensnare you, playing to a championship par-72.

Royal Cape Golf Club is without doubt one of the best and most challenging courses to play both in the Western Cape and the country. It is a course of championship stature, first played in 1906.

Tree lined with narrow fairways and subtle USGA specification built greens, the Royal Cape presents a traditional test of golf. The numerous ponds and lakes teeming with bird life provide beauty and distraction along the way.

As observers and custodians of the traditions of this wonderful game, the Royal Cape Golf Club, has a keen eye on the future. We accept and embrace changing times and we strive to maintain an enjoyable balance of traditional values and the modern lifestyle. Royal Cape has hosted the South African Open ten times, first in 1910. Gary Player won in 1965 when he became the first player to break 70 in all four rounds, a record. In 1996 Ernie Els birdied the last three holes winning by one shot.

The clubhouse retains its old style charm and traditional design, modernised many times since 1923. Facing the course are the lounge, Centenary room and members bar as well as the gallery corridor with its many framed photographs, paintings and memorabilia celebrating the Club’s long history. Apart from providing rest and refreshment for golfers, the clubhouse also frequently hosts functions ranging from formal dinners to special events.

wildlife and heritage Travel to Africa and become Africa’s most effective conservationist … Tourism in Southern Africa is an extraordinary experience for the visitors to our shores and is the lifeblood for the country’s wildlife and for the one in seven South Africans who depend on the tourism industry to put food on their tables every day. With the favourable Rand to Euro, Dollar, Pound exchange rates, South Africa is even better value! Where in the world can one buy a glass of a wine or a premium beer in a great restaurant for a little over two Euro. Hopefully more and more travellers from around the globe will travel to Southern Africa and take advantage of the favourable exchange rates, our fabulous weather and the extraordinary range of experiences and facilities that cater to all budgets and all ages. For every eight additional tourists that South Africa receives, another job is created. Tourism in Africa is the win-win industry that benefits everyone. Wildlife too smiles when tourism performs … There are few places on the planet where a healthy natural environment is totally dependent on a healthy and vibrant tourism industry. African governments have many demands on their tax revenues – wildlife and conservation needs are understandably further down the pecking order than education, health, housing etc. Park fees and revenues from tourism have become the foremost source of income that pays the costs of conservation and the money needed to sustain many of the parks and reserves throughout the region. It’s not often that travelling to a country contributes to its conservation… That is what happens when one commits to travelling to Africa and visiting our wildlife parks. A portion of your money pays for that park’s conservation and management costs. Without visitors, most of Africa’s parks and reserves would collapse. Southern Africa is fortunate to not have destructive mass market tourism. Tourism numbers in most of our parks are carefully controlled and those who prefer an even more private experience can book into one of our many private wildlife reserves that offer a premium and very private experience that ranks alongside the world’s finest. A glance through many a “Best-of-the-Best” hotel lists will often see Southern African lodges and hotels dominating. So where is the catch? … There are no catches, but there are some recommendations: • Keep clear of lion petting and all walking-with-lion facilities. These tourist traps have no conservation value at all. Rather travel to one of our fabulous parks and reserves for your wildlife experience. • Be careful not to book into small “cabbage-patch” type game reserves where wildlife is often kept in smaller paddocks and where the wildlife experience are often contrived or manipulated. • Spend more time in game reserves rather than less. The more time you have in any of our wonderful wildlife parks, the more you will start to absorb the rhythms, moods and heartbeat of Africa’s wildlife and nature. • Get into bird-watching … There are interesting birds everywhere and more often than not, keen birders see more leopards! • Never miss a game drive! One is often tempted to sleep in after a late night … Do so at your peril! • Wherever possible, travel with an experienced guide, especially if you are a first time visitor. The best guides are worth their weight in gold and repay their wages many times over by delivering extraordinary experiences that will stay with you for life (and bring you back to Africa many more times). • Booking your holiday via a reputable specialist Southern Africa tour operator will help avoid the pitfalls and add value and experience to every day of your stay. Finally, a warning … Africa is addictive.

SOUTH AFRICAN NATIONAL PARKS Get up close and personal with wild African beasts. Truth be told, the only chance to get up close and personal with wild Africa is on a long, multi-day walking safari surrounded by what the entire wilderness throws at you. Get your boots dirty and discover the Big 5 on an ultimate foot safari in the untouched expansive wilderness of the Kruger National Park, surrounded by bush as far as the horizon. The Kruger Wilderness Trails are multi-day walking trails in the pristine wilderness sections of the park, where there is no set route or time constraints, allowing endless indulgence in the scents, sounds and sights of nature. The Kruger National Park has seven Wilderness Trails spread over the length of the park. These trails start on either a Wednesday afternoon to a Saturday morning or a Sunday afternoon to a Wednesday morning. Trailists arrive and book in at the reception of the rest camp from where the trail departs. Participating guests of up to eight persons spend three nights in rustic camps with two days in between spent walking. Trailists are accompanied by experienced and armed trail guides and go out for morning and afternoon walks for close encounters with Africa’s biological heritage, tracking wildlife as big and small as one can get. For the birding enthusiasts the trails offers a never to be forgotten chance to observe birds in their natural habitat and in the case of some of the more reclusive species, to go to their known haunts with excellent chances of special sightings. The secrets of the bush, rocks, rivers and surrounding valleys are interpreted while on the trail or under the stars around the campfire.

TAU GAME LODGE

“There are few better places to be than sitting on a dam wall and watching lions in front of your vehicle while the sun is slowly setting in the background. This day was no different; there we were with four young lions, watching the sunset, two males and two females. As they lay there a very cautious brown hyena came to drink at the dam, the lions immediately picked up on the lonely hyena and began to stalk the unsuspecting prey, and they began to manoeuvre themselves into a position in which to attack from.” The Madikwe Game Reserve boasts year-round game viewing and is one of the few reserves where one can view a wide variety of fauna, including the Big 5, wild dog and cheetah, and is also home to a bird population of over 250 different species. Tau Game Lodge overlooks a natural waterhole and all 30 luxury chalets are spread out in U-formation on either side of the lodge, offering excellent views of animals at the waterhole from the opposite bank. Expect the unexpected at Tau and spend your nights

listening to roaring lions from the watering hole and even witnessing the odd kill. The six deluxe chalets can accommodate three adults sharing or two adults and two children in one chalet. The family suite is a spacious open-plan, modern unit, suitable for families or two couples travelling together. MESSAGE FROM THE CAPE WINEMAKERS GUILD The South African wine industry has achieved substantial growth within the past 21 years since Democracy but we have to continue educating consumers on South African wines. A consumer education strategy is much needed as it is crucial for the future success of the wine industry within South Africa. The consumer education strategy can be based on a complete review of the best practise wine consumer education from around the world, as well as local consumer education in other categories. Another major contributor to the South African wine industry is wine tourism. Wine tourism incorporates a wine experience that goes beyond merely enjoying wine. The natural beauty of the South African wineries, along with good food is some of the most important aspects that appeal to visitors. Wine tourists are significant spenders and often South Africans. Although tourists and visitors from across the world are vital to the success of wine tourism, the role of South African consumers is equally important. Research has shown that positive word of mouth is key to marketing success in wine tourism within South Africa. Social media and websites are also significant references. Our 2015 harvest has had one of the earliest starts in decades. The warm weather we experienced in August 2014 resulted in earlier bud break, after which a warm, dry and windy summer kept vineyard growth under control and quickened the ripening by nearly two weeks. The dry weather also led to one of the healthiest seasons in years and we experienced almost no losses due to diseases or rot. We are expecting exceptional wines throughout our cultivar varieties. Our grape analyses were good with low pH and good acidity and sugar levels, which form the foundation for high quality wines. The white wines are also of above average quality, with good wine analyses and flavour spectrums. The good colour and intense flavour in this year’s red wine is due to the smaller berries, as well as moderate temperatures during the harvest time. It is indeed a great honour for me to be part of one of the world’s great wine destinations and I am excited to see what the future holds for the South African wine industry.

The vision for the future of Ernie Els Wines lies in “driving Cabernet Sauvignon”, the grape variety that performs so well in this area of Stellenbosch known as the “Golden Triangle”. The original farm, proclaimed in 1699, is nestled at the foot of the Groenberg mountain on the banks of the Kromme River, with the majestic Hawequa Mountains on its eastern border. As only the fifth family to hold these title deeds, the owners maintain the farm’s historic integrity, buildings and architecture. The tradition of wine making is reestablished. The 4-star graded Guesthouse and 5-star, boutique Coach House provide an extraordinary getaway. All meals are served in The Local Grill Restaurant, Its menu offers unadorned, with emphasis is on natural, “field to fork”, wholesome and preservative-free cuisine. Tours of the olive grove round-off with an olive tasting at the dam’s gazebo, which is also a great for bass fishing. The estate was christened Val du Charron, as a tribute to this ‘Valley of the Wagon maker’. Huguenots who settled here in the early 1700’s added the French, whilst wagon-making refers to the last outpost for ox wagons servicing before heading over the treacherous Bainskloof to the then unknown hinterland. In 2012, Val du Charron became an Estate label. All wines are bottled, produced and come from vines grown on the farm itself. The southern facing vineyard slopes grow 16 varietals, from Merlot to Touriga Nacional, to the 30 year old Chenin blanc and Pinot Gris. Each unique cultivar adds a complex, richer, finer, and more finessed taste to the blends, than any cultivar on its own. The combination of the rich tradition, natural beauty and technology, produce not only wines and olives but a memorable experience for every visitor.
