Coaching Junior Golfers (not bad advice for adult golf swings too) The advice in this instruction article is tailored to parents with children from the ages of 5 until 12 years of age, however the basics of the golf swing I will discuss apply to everybody. In fact from experience, the simpler we can keep golf tips the better. I read many years that the great golf coach Butch Harmon believes that no golf instruction is good unless a child can understand it. For parents with children, I would encourage your child to play as many sports as they can, they should not start specializing in golf until they are about 15 years old. You need to encourage your kids to be as athletic as possible. Playing a variety of sport will give them this athleticism. I would encourage parent to let their kids hit the golf ball as far they can, swing hard and fast at the golf ball. Accuracy is easier to acquire later than distance. Both Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods grew up this way. Let your kids give the ball a good wallop. In terms of golf technique I have 4 themes. The Grip, Aim, Posture and weight transfer. Take the correct grip. Encourage your sons or daughters. By correct for an 8 year old is to make sure both hands are together touching each other with no space between the hands. Under 10 years of age I would encourage a baseball or 10-finger grip and over 10 years an interlocking grip. See Picture 1. Aim is easily taught by explain to your child that aiming is like standing on a railway track. The outer track is for the ball and the inner track is for the body. Put down a club or an alignment stick on the range to illustrate this. See Picture 2. Posture is the 3rd theme I would stress. A good posture consists of bending from the hips with the back nice and straight and flexing the knees slightly. See Picture 3.
Weight transfer is the final theme. I would encourage the child to feel the weight moving towards the back foot on the backswing (right foot for a right handed golfer) and towards the front foot on the follow through. I always ask my young students to show me the bottom of their back shoe on the follow through. See picture 4. Keep the instruction simple. From the age of 10 years I would recommend that you take your child for formal lessons. Make sure that the professional you take the child to is a member of The PGA of South Africa. From the ages of 10 until 12 your child will be in a skill window. During this period children are able to learn skills quickly, make use of this opportunity. My final bit of advice is to make sure you fit your children with junior golf clubs. Clubs that are to heavy and long will hinder the development your child’s golf swing. Enjoy golfing with your children; it’s a very rewarding experience.
