Swaziland is one of the smallest countries in Africa and has a well-earned reputation for friendliness in Southern Africa. It is one of the last absolute monarchies in the world and the country contains several large wildlife parks and reserves, which are hugely popular with visitors. Swaziland has a long and rich history of human settlement. Artefacts indicating human activity dating back to the early Stone Age 200 000 years ago have been found here. Prehistoric rock art paintings

dating from 25 000 BC can be viewed at the Nsangwini Rock Shelter. To learn more about Swaziland’s culture, visit during one of the festivals celebrated by the locals. Incwala Kingship, meaning Festival of the First Fruits, is an important Swazi religious ritual that takes place between December and January. This annual ceremony lasts for eight weeks and it unites the inhabitants of Swaziland so they can gain blessings from ancestors.

To connect with the local wildlife, visit the Hlane Royal National Park, where one can spot a variety of wildlife including the Big Five and other mammals. Bird life is also abundant here. Most visitors visiting Swaziland usually arrive by road from South Africa. Airlink Swaziland also provides flights departing from Johannesburg to the new King Mswati III International airport. Lying to the east of Cape Town, beyond the Hottentots-Holland mountains, is the Overberg region of South Africa. This region has always been considered as the bread basket of the Cape, many wheat farms can be found here. South Africa’s national bird, the Blue Crane, can be spotted quite easily as many of them use the endless, rolling wheat fields as breeding grounds. As a region enroute to the Garden Route, the breathtaking coastline is a major

attraction for visitors. It is home to Cape Agulhas, the southernmost point of Africa and a notorious spot for shipwrecks. Close to 150 ships have sunk around Agulhas and artefacts can be viewed at Bredasdorp’s Shipwreck Museum. This is a land for adventure seekers and nature enthusiasts. At the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve, one can find a large diversity of flowering plants not found anywhere else in the fynbos biome.

Overberg is especially popular for whale watching when the Southern Right Whale gather along the coastline for the annual breeding season. Whale watchers can opt to get up-close on guided kayaking trips, boat cruises or simply admire from landbased viewing hotspots such as De Hoop Nature Reserve and Marine Protected Area, where accommodation and other facilities are available for a peerless immersive experience. For more information, please visit www.overberg.co.za

De Hoop Nature Reserve and Marine Protected Area is South Africa’s best land based destination for whale watching. During each October and November Southern Right Whale’s migratory and calving season, whales can be seen frolicking in the water from land and the area is crucial for the conservation of this

endangered whale species and many other at-risk wildlife. De Hoop comes with a unique combination of sea, sand dunes, the vlei (a shallow minor lake, mostly of a seasonal nature) which attracts myriad bird life, a floral kingdom of rare fynbos plants, and the Potberg Mountains, which are home to

a colony of endangered Cape Vulture. Hikers and cyclists will be treated to close-up encounters with bontebok, cape mountain zebra, eland, antelope, baboon and ostrich. De Hoop offers a range of accommodation, a restaurant that opens daily and the Nature Reserve is open for day visitors. www.dehoopcollection.com
