AC H RA F I E H , A L I VA B L E N E I G H B O R H O O D Achrafieh is one of the oldest districts in Beirut. Over the years this geographic landform, the hill, has developed in many directions becoming more congested and even more fragmented. Today, the traditional urban fabric has been cut through by large infrastructural projects (large scale roads). Consequently, the hill’s summit “Sassine Square” has become only a traffic through intersection for daily commuters, and auto-dominated transportation has allowed cars to take over the public right of way, leaving little to no space for people. As a result, the quality of life in the neighborhood has been largely compromised.
THE PEDESTRIAN ON THE HILL To better understand the human experience in Achrafieh, I decided to experiment with different walking scenarios. What’s particular about these experimental itineraries is that only local roads were used to go from one side of the hill to the other side, and large regional roads were only crossed. For the project, I have decided to work on one of the itineraries taken during my personal city walk (the reasons for this choice are explained in the following page). Below is a map of some of the walks taken followed by a map showing the chosen pathway.
The importance of this project is to show the value of the implementation of local solutions in the pursuit of the best version of our “City of the Future”. Solutions through urban design are flexible because they provide the opportunity to adapt ecological interventions at different scales. By retrofitting existing streetscapes, existing buildings, and existing open spaces, we can help equip cities to develop resilience against present and future challenges. Furthermore, community inclusion creates a better sense of belonging to the space they share, which helps us maintain attractive, adaptive, and sustainable cities. All in the purpose of providing the best living conditions for present and future residents of the city.

OPEN SPACE PERCEPTION & INTERACTION
Biophilia - the relationships between nature, human biology and the design of the built In order to analyze the sensorial relationship between the human body and nature/open space, the maps drafted show different layers and perceptions of these spaces observed by an individual who takes the pathway. The map portrays visible, filtered view, and non-visible open space - as well as the physical barriers that exist between the individual and nature (ex. Fence, Overflowing trees, Wall, etc.)

STRATEGIC MASTERPLAN Main Green Objectives: 1. Preserve the remaining green areas in the belt especially areas with heritage. 2. Create dynamic green corridors to connect the belt to existing public gardens (Green Network + Public space network). 3. Generate activity in the public space, including eco-activities. 4. Accessibility to as many possible open green spaces for the community. 5. Provide more space for parklets in the existing streetscape.

Mobility Since the city of Beirut has become more dependent on individual car mobility, the project proposes: 1. Connections from the projected pathway to the Soft Mobility plan proposed by “Le Plan vert et Paysager de la ville de Beyrouth”. 2. Pedestrian Friendly streets with bike lanes and traffic calming measures. 3. Designated park and ride facilities to liberate streets from unauthorized parking. Placemaking as a tool to regenerate lost spaces and stimulate local economy

Encouraging the integration of public spaces as the core of community life is a crucial tool in urban renewal. As a second step, a zoomed in analysis tackles sub-neighborhoods in the belt, called “sequences”, looking for the specificities of each sequence and studying social and economic patterns in relation to public space users and usages. The project values community participation in the planning as well as the design process by utilizing assets and dormant opportunities specific to every sub- neighborhood found on the belt to suggest specific solutions for every case.

In order to promote walkability, traffic-calming interventions are used to prioritize pedestrians over cars. Accordingly, the project places the human experience in the public space at the crux of our proposal, thus integrating locals’ cultural, social, functional needs and well-being. This was possible by reflecting and trying to integrate the key principles of placemaking as put forth by Project for Public Spaces (PPS). As such sociability, diversity, accessibility and image where the design driving forces to draw attractive and safe spaces that could bring the community together, complement the existing functions, connect the city center to its dual urban cores, and stimulate socio-economic activity.

Our urban design proposal focuses on the consolidation and requalification of these fragmented public spaces. It develops physical connections between the different voids and envisages them as shared landscapes where the human scale and right to inclusive and sustainable spaces draws the character and the image of the city.

Evolving from an ancient core “the Medina”, the old city of Constantine have known many historical and spatial mutation resulting in a network of fragmented open spaces, the case of the city center. Today, the city center emerges as an administrative hub attracting a huge traffic favoring cars over pedestrians and public transport. However, with a footprint ratio of 70% vacant/constructed, the center’s symbolic significance is compromised by its inability to provide an inclusive, attractive, ecological and well-equipped public space that reflects the image of its community and its city.
