NATIONAL PHILANTHROPY DAY SPEAKERS ELISE CHRISTMON (SHE/HER) Elise works in digital production at The Nature Conservancy World Office in Arlington, VA and is based in Tucson, Arizona. She graduated from Oberlin College with a BA in Art History and German, spending her junior year at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich specializing in medieval art. After being forged in the fires of the nonprofit art sector at MOCA Tucson, Elise accepted a fundraising role at the Sonoran Institute and fell in love with environmental justice, leading her to her current role in Membership at The Nature Conservancy. She has served on the board of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Southern AZ chapter since 2019, establishing the BIPOC Nonprofit Workers support group and assisting in the chapter’s groundbreaking IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Access) work.

JENNY FLYNN (SHE/HER) Before joining the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona (CFSA) as President and CEO in 2021, Jenny Flynn served Southern Arizona through grant and foundation leadership positions at the University of Arizona Foundation for twenty years. Working with a broad array of national and local partner foundations, she raised more than $100 million for the University of Arizona. Jenny currently serves on the advisory boards of the University of Arizona School of Government and Public Policy and the MAP Dashboard at the Eller College of Management. Jenny also serves on the board of Sun Corridor and is a member of the Southern Arizona Leadership Council.

VALERIE SIPP (SHE/HER) Valerie is a Coordinator at the Department of Inclusion and Multicultural Engagement at the University of Arizona where she supports students and advocates for marginalized communities. She has her Masters degree in Contemporary Art from Sotheby’s Institute of Art in New York City. A born and raised Tucsonan, she has been involved with local nonprofits for almost a decade as a fundraiser, employee, and volunteer. She has been part of the Association of Fundraising Professional Southern Arizona Chapter since 2019 when she became CoChair of the Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access (IDEA) Committee. Since then she has held various titles and is set to be the Board President in 2024.

SCOTT MATLICK (HE/HIM) Scott recently celebrated working ten years as a fundraiser, and is proud to have spent each of those years with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southern Arizona. There is nothing more important to him than family, and feels privileged to be able to keep them together during times of crisis at RMHC. Scott found this rewarding career almost by accident, by way of a previous calling in music education, having taught band in Tucson area public schools and at the University of Arizona. He is thankful for the connections and community created by AFP and its passionate members.

FRED RODRIGUEZ (HE/HIM) A native Tucsonan, Fred Rodriguez has had a storied career in non-profit for over twenty years. His fundraising roots trace back to theatrical productions, where he likely gained experience in raising funds for various projects. From building houses to delivering meals, his involvement in non-profits has varied widely. Currently, Fred holds the position of Associate Director of Development for the Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation (SAAF). Fred gives of his time serving on the Board of Directors for Southern Arizona Senior Pride and volunteering for Invisible Theater. Although this is Fred’s first year as co-chair for National Philanthropy Day, he has served on the committee for the last six years and plans to co-chair again next year. During his free time, Fred enjoys exploring Tucson’s gastronomy scene with his husband, Jose.

COURTNEY SLANAKER (SHE/HER) Courtney Slanaker has spent the past 12 years creating impact in the nonprofit sector. Her introduction to humanitarian work started in Guatemala which led to a position with local nonprofit, World Care. After 5 years at World Care, Courtney joined the American Red Cross as the Executive Director for Southern Arizona. Courtney is committed to advancing the health and safety of all people and she is dedicated to empowering volunteers and donors to carry out the incredible mission of the American Red Cross! Courtney is a Tucson native and earned her bachelor’s degree in Public Health with a minor in Spanish from the University of Arizona in 2014. She donates her time to advancing philanthropy through AFP and fundraising for Tucson Chicks n Chaps. During her free time, Courtney loves adventuring with family, her 2 daughters and husband (Kayleigh, Kenzie, and Chris), and riding her horse, Junior.

OUTSTANDING YOUTH IN PHILANTHROPY ALPHA DELTA PI The Delta Gamma chapter of Alpha Delta Pi was established at the University of Arizona in 1950, and has been a partner of Ronald McDonald House Charities® (RMHC®) of Southern Arizona for over 40 years. They value scholarship, service to others, sisterhood, and leadership. The philanthropic partnership with the RMHC has been one of the central tenets of their chapter and the reason why many of our new members choose their organization. In just the past fifteen years, the Delta Gamma chapter at UofA has contributed $275,000 to RMHC of Southern Arizona. The Chapter hosts many events throughout the year to raise money such as Chicken and Fries with ADPi, Diamond Series, and Pop Tab collections. Members also partner with RMHC to volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House®, Ronald McDonald Family Room® programs and their events, as well as routinely cooking meals for guest families. By partnering with the same organization year in and year out, our members are able to build on past successes and understand the lasting value of their work. They recognize that the care and devotion to philanthropic values developed in their members will carry forward into their careers and personal lives.

OUTSTANDING FOUNDATION PHILANTHROPIST ABBETT FAMILY FOUNDATION The Abbett family has a long-standing tradition of service to our country and giving back to our communities. The Abbett Family Foundation (AFF) was established in 2012 and received its 501(c)3 exemption (private family foundation) in 2015. Our mission is to benefit Arizonans by creating opportunities to develop and expand needed services through collaborations with nonprofit service providers and charitable giving. The Foundation believes in supporting organizations by providing consultation and funding programmatic and infrastructure resources. Co-founded by Jeffrey Abbett (son) and Jenniffer Jarvis (granddaughter), the Foundation board includes members Renee Cruz (daughter) and Tim Wilcox (Principal, Sonoran Investment Management, Tucson). The aim of our partnerships is not to create short-term solutions but to build relationships and programs with broad community impact and lasting sustainability. Our work focuses on identifying nonprofit service providers who are growing and developing essential services for advancing health, educational, scientific, literary, and other charitable purposes. Our collaborations with community leaders bring new services and educational opportunities to those in need throughout Arizona. Our efforts also support nonprofits in creating and improving the quality and scope of existing programs and services.

Until she passed in 2022, Jill served as a lifetime board member at JFCS where she utilized her expertise in early childhood education to ensure that JFCS’s services reached some of southern Arizona’s most vulnerable children. Jill’s compassion for those in need was not limited to only children; Jill was an advocate for increasing JFCS services to Jewish and non-Jewish people of all ages. Along with her husband, Herschel (Herk) Rosenzweig, Jill’s philanthropic efforts were wide-reaching. Jill also supported many arts programs, especially those with programs for children, including the Tucson Symphony, the Arizona Opera, the Southern Arizona Chamber Music Society, the Tucson Museum of Art, the University of Arizona School of Dance, and The Drawing Studio.
