Today's festivities will be hosted by Lucinda Holliday 2

"Tucson's Queen of Comedy" has been a driving force in our Arizona community since 1989. Helping raise millions for people and organizations in need. Being a hairdresser, performer, entrepreneur, and philanthropist has kept Lucinda very busy. In June of 2021, she organized a non-profit named Lucinda Holliday's GLAM Network. Continuing the grassroots fundraising for other non-profit groups.

Welcome to Out Brunch After Dark Thank you for joining us for SAAF’s 5th Annual Out Brunch, and our second Out Brunch After Dark! At last year’s Out Brunch, we unveiled SAAF’s new Strategic Plan. One of our Strategic Priorities is to help ensure we have a connected community. I’m so happy to connect with so many of you in person this evening as we, together, celebrate amazing folks that have supported our community is so many ways. I’ve gotten to know each of our honorees over the years. They have laid the foundation and path for so many of us in our lives and our careers, including myself. Our community is stronger because of the three people and one community organization that have dedicated so much of themselves in promoting health, well-being, and social justice for those living with HIV, LGBTQ+ individuals, and communities marginalized by society. Out Brunch Award Categories

Steve Hall Award

The Steve Hall Award is given to an individual who makes outstanding volunteer contributions to further the mission of promoting freedom, equality, safety, and well-being of LGBTQ+ people in Southern Arizona. Honoring the dedication and consistent commitment of the volunteer’s life to the LGBTQ+ community, the Steve Hall Award honors the past work and promotes the future volunteer endeavors of the recipient. The award is named after Steve Hall, a pioneering volunteer who served the LGBTQ+ community with tireless dedication.

Godat Award The Godat Award was inaugurated in 1998 to recognize extraordinary long-term contributions by an individual to Southern Arizona’s LGBTQ+ community. Recipients of this prestigious award have shown keen leadership in the LGBTQ+ community and advocated throughout their careers for the advancement of the whole community. Ken Godat, after whom the award is named, was the first recipient. Since its inception, the Godat Award has celebrated the personal commitment and public advocacy of Southern Arizona’s LGBTQ+ leaders.

Dr. Jean Baker Community Ally Award In 2001, an award was created to honor a straight ally who has made significant contributions to advance the freedom, equality, safety, and well-being of LGBTQ+ people in Southern Arizona. Knowing that the work of so many in the LGBTQ+ community is aided and furthered by our straight allies. The Dr. Jean Baker Community Ally Award shines a light on the faithful and indefatigable efforts of an ally working with Southern Arizona’s LGBTQ+ community.

Richard Elías Public Servant Award Inaugurated last year, the Richard Elías Public Servant Award will be presented to public or government servants who have made significant or extraordinary contributions to the equality, equity, health, and inclusion of the LGBTQ+ community of Tucson and Arizona. This award is named after Representative Richard Elías for his long time support to both the LGBTQ+ and HIV/AIDS community, and other marginalized groups.

2022 Out Brunch Honorees SOUTHERN ARIZONA SENIOR PRIDE

Steve Hall Award Recipient

Southern Arizona Senior Pride’s mission is to celebrate, support, and unite LGBTQI+ older adults. They recognize and respond to unique concerns of the community by delivering social and support programming in three areas: social & learning; (2) health & wellbeing; (3) arts & culture. SASP vets and shares LGBTQI+ welcoming resources and increases awareness of aging issues in the LGBTQI+ community. Through advocacy and advisory participation with other organizations and projects, they shine a light on the needs of a traditionally invisible demographic. Founded as a program of Wingspan Community Center in 2002, Senior Pride became independent and volunteer-run with SAAF as fiscal sponsor in 2014 when Wingspan closed. We have maintained past services and expanded our mission for seven years. Our 45+ dedicated volunteers moved the organization steadily forward enabling Senior Pride to become an independent 501(c)3 non-profit with paid staff positions on January 1, 2022.

SCOTT BLADES

Godat Award Recipient Scott Blades (he/him/él) is the Executive Director and founder of the Tucson Interfaith HIV/AIDS Network (TIHAN), the largest privately-funded and volunteer-driven AIDS service organization in the state of Arizona which this year commemorates 28 years of serving the community. Scott is passionate about engaging people to improve our community. He is a champion of social justice, equality, and inclusion for persons who are LGBTQ+ and persons who are living with and affected by HIV. Recognitions include the William S. MacDonald Lifetime Achievement Award from Equality Arizona (2014), the United Methodist Global AIDS Leadership Award (2016), and Community Leader of the Year from the Tucson GLBT Chamber of Commerce (2018).

Her work put her at the forefront of the HIV-epidemic in Tucson in its earliest days. She was on the Governor’s Task Force on AIDS and a member of the Board of Directors of the Tucson AIDS Project.

KARIN UHLICH

Richard Elías Public Servant Award Recipient Karin Uhlich served as an out and proud LGBTQI+ member of the Tucson City Council from 2005-2017 and in 2021, and as Vice-Mayor of Tucson for two years. LGBTQ+ PROGRAMS Arizona's Life Links for Youth (ALLY)

Lighthouse

Anti-Violence Project (AVP)

Link

Arizona's Life Links for Youth focuses on reducing the rate of attempted and completed suicides among Arizona's LGBTQ+ youth. This program utilizes both Sources of Strength curriculum for youth and Question, Persuade, & Refer training for the community. AVP works to prevent, respond to, and end all forms of violence against and within the LGBTQ+ communities of Southern Arizona. Through crisis intervention, AVP case maagers provide emergency housing, support, and empowerment to victims of violence.

Bread & Roses

SAAF and Old Pueblo Community Services have partnered to bring the first transitional housing facility in the county for LGBTQ+ youth. The objective is to provide youth the support needed at every step, so that they can permanently leave the streets, secure stable housing, and build a self-sufficient, and fulfilling life. Bread & Roses is by referral only.

Eon Youth Lounge

Eon, housed in the Thornhill Lopez Center on 4th, provides a safe drop-in space for LGBTQ+ youth aged 13–24. This space provides social opportunities, sex-positive health education, life skills, showers, housing assistance, and a place to be themselves.

10

SAAF is proud to act as a fiscal sponsor for the following LGBTQ+ focused community groups: World AIDS Day, National Latino AIDS Awareness Day

Lighthouse is a safe space where folx 18+ can access linkages to housing services, mental health and substance use treatment, as well as recovery support groups, referrals and community events for LGBTQ+ young adults and their straight allies. Link, is a sexual violence prevention program for middle and high school students. Using the evidence-based Safe Dates curriculum, youth dissect what constitutes healthy and abusive relationships, the causes and consequences of dating abuse, and develop the skills necessary to advocate for themselves, their partners, and their peers.

Spectrum SPECTRUM is a health and wellness program empowering youth with sexual and relationship health knowledge so they can make informed decisions to protect themselves, their partners, and be a resource to their peers. Wellness is more than education, so Spectrum includes the option for youth to enroll in a UArizona research component, connecting them to free HIV testing, mental & behavioral health counseling, and individualized resource navigation.

Youth Empowerment & LGBTQ+ Leadership (YELL)

SAAF runs a Youth Empowerment and LGBTQ+ Leadership coalition that focuses on substance-abuse prevention by delivering informative presentations about risk-taking directly to youth. LGBTQ+ youth also get the opportunity to lead the discussion and implement solutions through YELL.
