Yosemite National Park

President Lincoln signed the Yosemite Land Grant on June 30, 1864, protecting the area. Thanks to John Muir’s work to further protect the delicate ecosystem of the High Sierra, Yosemite became a national park on October 1, 1890.

Located in California, it is known for its waterfalls, but within its nearly 1,200 square miles, you can find deep valleys, granite monoliths, meadows, ancient giant sequoias, and a vast wilderness area.

The park’s diverse landscape supports more than 400 species including amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.

At 2,425 feet, Yosemite Falls is one of tallest on the planet.

Millions visit from around the world and although the park is open all year, nearly 75 percent of visitors come to the park from May through October.

In 2017 Alex Honnold became the first person to reach the top of Yosemite’s 3,000-foot El Capitan wall without ropes.

Few people know about the park’s lunar rainbows or moonbows. In the spring and early summer if the sky is clear and the moon is full, it can produce enough light to create a rainbow from a waterfall’s mist.

The park has an elevation range from 2,127 to 13,114 feet and contains five major vegetation zones: chaparral and oak woodland, lower montane forest, upper montane forest, subalpine zone, and alpine.

Since 2020, a reservation is required to drive into Yosemite National Park during peak hours (6 am – 4 pm) from May 20 through September 30.
