Climates and Adaptation It’s All About Water
The Editor’s Desk by Samir Shukla
Climate change has almost won. Those are fighting words. I don’t mean them in a defeatist sense. I’m a logical realist. Human imprints are so pervasive on this planet, that making changes to our destructive natures is a bit like coming to the party as the empty bottles and cans are being cleaned up and most folks have left the building. Yes, we must work to address the underlying issues, but at the same time adaptation on a global scale is also at hand. Both must be done together. During a recent summer weekend trip to West Virginia mountains, the sheer beauty of our world was on full display. The lush green mountains and minimal development in a state park showcased the declining grandeur of the planet. A short half hour outside of the park and humanity's sprawl was on full display. Our ability to remake an area's natural balance to our needs becomes almost an afterthought in our daily lives. Adaptation has been the key element for humans to gain dominance over this planet. It’s about survival. Our ancestors adapted to new environments as they traveled and populated the globe. As a species we have evolved and thrived via adaptation. Of course, in the meantime we have also devastated ecosystems and irreversibly changed the planet in many ways. We have built great cities, but also wiped-out entire species and created environmental troubles for ourselves. Contemporary threats require continuous finetuning of our innate ability to adapt. Cyber threats, terror threats, virus and disease threats, nature threats, these all require adaptation. They require planning and infrastructure for all contingencies.
Climate change is now a part of our lives. We can make changes on how we do things to help soften this changing climate’s extremes. It is already wreaking havoc on the planet, but along with making changes to mitigate and temper climate change, we must also adapt to its threats. Adaptation is the key to rethinking our lifestyles and building infrastructure to minimize the effects of climate change on our species. Above all else, I believe, water is the prime stuff that will require new adaptations and infrastructure on a global scale. We must create massive, innovative infrastructure to manage the world’s water. This will be the defining act of our generation in the coming decades. Not only is the world’s weather changing, but the influx of severe storms, increase in droughts and flooding, and rising sea levels beckon us to make changes.

The importance of education today is undeniable. Are you prepared for what it costs? It takes planning to fund the cost of an education considering that between 2006-07 and 2016-17, published in-state tuition and fees at public four-year institutions increased at an average rate of 3.5% per year beyond inflation1. Festival Dances
Dances of India by Dr. Maha Gingrich We will start celebrating major Indian festivals such as Dasara and Diwali or Vijaya Dashami and Deepavali or however you want to spell it or name it depending on the regions. Now due to COVID, I am not sure what the festivities may look like. This usually means, it is time to get your best traditional clothing out of those closets and dress up to dance for hours until you get blisters on your feet. My students always came to classes irrespective of the blisters on their feet. Now that is called dedication! The bottom line is there is so much inner joy in dancing with family and friends. It is the same joy even the professional dancers get when they perform dance dramas working closely with their dance groups. The festival of Dasara has many stories according to the regions in India. For the same reason, you will also have many dances in different classical and folk dances depicting the stories of the regions. The name Dasara is derived from Sanskrit Dasha-hara referring to Lord Rama’s victory over the ten-headed demon king Ravana. In most of northern India and some parts of Maharashtra, Dasha-Hara is celebrated in honor of Lord Rama known as Ram Lilas. Most of these dances are the outdoor dance dramas attracting thousands of people. Saathee.com
In the region of Uttarakhand, the Dasara festival starts with the performance of Ram Lila which is unique as it is based on the musical rendering of the Katha or story of Lord Rama. It is based on the theatrical traditions set by Uday Shankar, a dancer and a choreographer during his stay in Almora; Ram Lila has been recognized by UNESCO in its 2008 report as one of the representative styles of cultural dances in India. In South India, same outdoor dance dramas are called Pagati Veshalu. In Kuchipudi dance style from South India, a very popular item called Ramayana Shabdam is also performed. Kathakali dance style from Kerala also features Valmiki Ramayana with amazing costumes, props and make up. Folk Dance of Karnataka State Yakshaganam is performed widely depicting the story of Lord Rama’s victory over evil Ravana. In these unique dance dramas, the dancers must have a lot of stamina as they are also reciting dialogues and singing and dancing at the same time. I see it as an outdoor version of the Broadway show. To celebrate this festival Vijaya Dashami, the day also marks the victory of Goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura. Bengalis observe Bijoya Dashami that marks the tenth day of Durga puja. On this day of Dasara, idols of the goddess are carried in processions and immersed in the river. Married women also smear vermilion on each other’s faces while others exchange greetings and celebrate with feasts. In Telangana, a joyful dance called Bathukamma is performed by all women. In Telugu, ‘Bathukamma’ means ‘Mother Goddess come Alive’. Bathukamma is a beautiful flower stack arranged with different unique seasonal flowers, most of them with medicinal values, in seven concentric layers in the shape of a peak of a temple called Gopuram. As a young child in India, I remember creating my own artwork with flowers and dancing around the flowers joining elders in their singing and clapping while going around the Bathukammas in a huge circle. I guess that sounds familiar to many of you as it is similar to the famous Garba dances performed in the state of Gujarat. This dance also continued on page 78 22

The film features performances from Oscar Isaac, Tiffany Haddish, Tye Sheridan and Willem Dafoe. It is slated to open on September 10.

The Eyes of Tammy Faye The Eyes of Tammy Faye is an intimate look at the extraordinary rise, fall and redemption of televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker. In the 28
1970s and 80s, Tammy Faye and her husband, Jim Bakker, rose from humble beginnings to create the world’s largest religious broadcasting network and theme park, and were revered for their message of love, acceptance, and prosperity. Tammy Faye was legendary for her indelible eyelashes, her idiosyncratic singing, and her eagerness to embrace people from all walks of life. However, it wasn’t long before financial improprieties, scheming rivals, and scandal toppled their carefully constructed empire. Portions of the film was filmed in Charlotte. Directed by Michael Showalter, the film features Jessica Chastain, Andrew Garfield, and Vincent D’Onofrio. Look for it in theaters beginning September 17.

Knowledge Sitar The sitar is a stringed instrument, originating from the Indian subcontinent, and used primarily in Hindustani (North Indian) classical music. Scholars believe the sitar evolved from the South Indian instrument Tritantri veena, which appeared in the 10th century. It flourished in the 16th and 17th centuries and arrived at its present form in 18th-century India. The word sitar is derived from the Persian word sehtar, meaning “three-stringed.” A sitar can have 18, 19, 20, or 21 strings. Six or seven of these are played strings which run over curved, raised frets, and the remainder are sympathetic strings which run underneath the frets and resonate in sympathy with the played strings. Typically measuring about four feet in length, the sitar has a deep pear-shaped gourd body; a long, wide, hollow wooden neck; both front and side tuning pegs; and 20 arched movable frets. Championed by George Harrison, who played it on the Beatles’ songs “Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)”, “Love You To” and “Within You Without You”, the sitar became popular via its association with the Beatles. In the 1960s, the instrument also appeared on tracks by the Doors and the Rolling Stones. Used widely throughout the Indian subcontinent, the sitar was popularized in the west through the works of Ravi Shankar, beginning in the late 1950s and early 1960s. There are two popular modern styles of sitar: the fully decorated “instrumental style” (sometimes called the “Ravi Shankar style”) and the “gayaki” style (sometimes called the “”Vilayat Khan”“ style). Tuning depends on the sitarist’s school or style, tradition, and each artist’s personal preference. The wood used in construction is generally teak wood, for the neck and faceplate, and calabash gourds for the resonating chambers. The instrument’s bridges are made + of deer horn or ebony.

USA Knowledge Banjo Banjo is a musical instrument of the guitar family, having a circular body covered in front with tightly stretched parchment and played with the fingers or a pick. The body, or “pot”, of a modern banjo typically consists of a circular rim (generally made of wood, though metal was also common on older banjos) and a tensioned head, like a drumhead. Traditionally, the head was made from animal skin, but contemporary models often use synthetic materials. A membrane is stretched over a frame to form a resonator. Early forms of the instrument were fashioned by African Americans in the United States, adapted from West African instruments of similar design. The banjo is frequently associated with bluegrass, folk, old-time and country music, and has also been used in rock, jazz, and classical music. The banjo was generally limited to African American traditional music and the folk culture of rural whites before minstrel shows of the 19th century brought it into the wider mainstream. The modern banjo comes in a variety of forms, including four- and five-string versions. A six-string version, tuned and played similarly to a guitar, has also gained popularity. Bluegrass music almost exclusively uses the five-string resonator banjo. The styles of playing include Scruggs style, named after North Carolina native Earl Scruggs; melodic, or Keith style, named for Bill Keith; and three-finger style with single-string work, also called Reno style after Don Reno. The earliest banjos had four gut strings; later, from five to nine metal strings were used. In the 1890s, frets were added to the long neck, and a machine head with screws replaced the tuning pegs. The standard banjo has five metal strings. There are many variations of the standard banjo including the zither banjo and the chanterelle. Saathee.com

At the End We Find Peace: A Study of Grief and Camaraderie
Mirror, Mirror by Jennifer Allen
“I thought I could describe a state; make a map of sorrow. Sorrow, however, turns out to be not a state but a process.” ~ CS Lewis Sorrow (noun)
● distress caused by loss, affliction, disappointment, etc.; grief, sadness, or regret. ● a cause or occasion of grief or regret, as an affliction, a misfortune, or trouble ● the expression of grief, sadness, disappointment, or the like
I still remember the first time I truly experienced grief in my life. An 8-year-old me traveled with my parents down to South Carolina to visit my grandfather… for the last time. We walked into the house and almost instinctively I could sense that something was amiss. The house had always carried a peculiar aura of cheer and warmth. It was a household filled with a mixture of sights, sounds, and smells that made it so extraordinary and inviting. But this time… the house felt cold, dark, and downright unsettling. It wasn’t until we walked down the hall and finally reached the master bedroom that I discovered why. My father stopped us right before the closed door and warned me that the sight of my grandfather may appear shocking at first glance. With that, he opened the door and my eyes finally caught exactly what I’d been told to prepare for. Now, keep in mind that my paternal grandfather was a stocky, barrel-chested man who was considerably stronger than he looked. His Irish heritage had molded him into a man who could be both amiable and stubborn. He also had a humorous charm about him that was incredibly contagious. continued on page 80

American Dance Festival Preview By Dilip Barman One of the many downsides of the pandemic was that the 87th annual American Dance Festival (ADF), the country’s biggest contemporary dance festival, did not occur in 2020. I received great news in late July that in September there will be a program held outdoors at Raleigh’s NC Museum of Art called “Together We Dance” that will bring some big and important names to dance lovers. From September 9-16 this all-outdoor festival will be held at the Joseph M. Bryan, Jr., Theater in the Museum Park. Executive Director Jodee Nimerichter shared, “after a difficult year and a half, we are thrilled to bring the community together again at our first-ever outdoor festival for eight performances by some of the finest dance companies dazzling audiences today.” The first company is Kyle Abraham (September 9) premiering the “Nina Simone Suite” (working title) with a series of solos and duets set to Nina Simone’s music. On September 10 and 11 will be the always crowd-pleasing Pilobolus with seemingly impossible body contortions sharing exciting and fun stories. They will be performing the high-energy “Megawatt” that I have seen and always loved numerous times, as well as “Shizen”, “Walklyndon”, and “The Empty Suitor”. On September 12 the 1988-ADF commissioned State of Darkness, “an intense 35-minute solo ... of relentless fervency, technical precision, and fearless abandon ... [that] challenges Stravinsky´s cacophonous Le Sacre du Printemps (The Rite of Spring)” will feature Annique Roberts of Ronald K. Brown/EVIDENCE at 3:30p and Michael Trusnovec formerly of the Paul Taylor Dance Company at 7:30p. Three incredible ‘Bessie” nominations were just received related to the production and cast. The production itself was nominated for Outstanding Revival, Trusnovic for Outstanding Performer in this production, and Roberts for Sustained Achievement with Ronald K. Brown/Evidence. Other performances are by Reggie Wilson/Fist and Heel Performance Group, BODYTRAFFIC, and the unequalled Paul Taylor Dance Company. PTDC will perform several pieces including “A Field of Grass” “with songs sung by Harry Nilsson, a dance evoking America in the 1960s where a central character experiences love, drugs, rebellion, and hope through his counterculture”, as well as “Duet” and one of my favorites, the lush “Esplanade”.

again in the community of others. Our hope is that this outdoor performance series will provide a safe way for artists and audience to finally enjoy the power and joy of dance together again. I think the sharing of an art experience is magical, I invite everyone to come and experience ADF like you have never experienced it before! Dilip: Can you share one exciting sentence about each troupe that is coming?
Jodee: What I would prefer to share is that each company is bringing an exciting program of works that are sure to delight and entertain and allow for reflection and possibly transcendence. Each program is incredible and I would encourage folks to not only come see their favorite companies but try something new. You have a chance to experience new works commissioned by ADF for this season, classic works that can be seen over and over again, and restaged work that continues to be relevant. This ADF season features a range for artists including those in the I had a few minutes to sit down with Jodee Nimerichter for early stages of their choreographic careers to those who are legendary. a short interview. Here is what she said. Dilip: I’m excited about the mini-season! Warfare 2.0 The Rise of Machismo-Lite Subcontinental Divide by Ahsen Jillani You are probably reading this a few weeks after the fall of Kabul, but I am willing to go out on a limb on this one, so bear with me. The first few days of this so-called invasion was a blur of videos of bearded guys hugging on streets and then drinking tea. They supposedly moved into various regional cities without firing a single shot. Then the mysterious airlifts at the airport started. Seems the US and many allied countries are just casually landing soldiers and planes to evacuate their citizens and even those 18,000 plus locals and their 50,000 family members who helped during the 20-year war effort. We will see how those visa applications go. The brutal Taliban of 20 years ago? Instead of beating men without beards and stoning women like before … they are now still drinking tea while US C-17 aircraft are packing people like sheep and flying them out night and day. This new face of the fearsome warrior is actually becoming the new normal. Former President Trump launched about $50 million of the American taxpayers’ money into Syria while eating chocolate cake with the Chinese prime minister at Mar-a-Lago. The problem was this: A couple of Syrian guys were sitting on this abandoned airfield – also probably drinking tea. The White House and the Pentagon were all shocked at the two-person death toll. The billion-dollar satellites should have detected that two guys were sitting in the desert. After all, this was a reality TV president launching a reality TV spectacle, and nobody was supposed to die. The show of force was more akin to a July 4 fireworks display. Nobody wanted to kill people, or even damage any new stuff that had just arrived from Amazon via a hyperactive UPS truck that chucked ten boxes of bullets into the airfield, ran over the mailbox, and then sped off after sending a cell phone shot of the packages to the ISIS warriors. The Taliban know the story we all should now know. Warfare is nothing more than a video game for the massive trillion dollar superpower militaries of today. The formula has become so simple that it is downright silly now. The B-1 bombers take out the radars from 60,000 feet. They are out of reach of any small country’s air force or missiles. Then the AC-130 gunships and the A-10 Warthogs come in and destroy the entire city or military base in 20 minutes by raining pure hell full of 40mm bullets and 105mm rockets. Their sensors can practically see a pistol in a person’s pocket, day or night, from 25,000 feet. There is no place to run from 2,000 rounds of bullets
Saathee.com
a minute that can chop down an entire forest in a few seconds. So, in a sense, this concept of “the mother of all battles”, as Saddam Hussain warned, is a sad joke. The US took his entire military out flying at a leisurely 275 knots five miles up in the air. This harkens back to the escalating Cold War in the 60s, when the concept of Mutual Assured Destruction (MAD) played a major part in nuclear deterrence. If both sides could destroy each other, there would be no war. Today, the technology is so one-sided, that you can just call it Assured Destruction (AD). And the word “Ad” can explain a lot about today’s global warfare. The Taliban are back after 20 years, but they have arrived in a world of social media and Netflix. While you are solar charging your new beard trimmer from Amazon sitting on a mountain north of Kandahar, you have other major issues. Doordash is delivering kabobs shortly, but you are two miles from the village and can’t find your mask; there is that other issue with the cellphone network being down so you can’t spool the next episode of “Vikings.” And what’s really chapping you while rubbing retinol and then sunscreen on yourself on this brutal summer day at 13,000 feet is that the local village Starbucks, called Crescentbucks here, has run out of goat milk – and you need that morning triple mocha chai latte, or you are really grumpy while polishing your AK-47 and the bullets. Truth is that the Taliban, and most of these guns waving 15th century organizations, know that the US will knock out their cell towers and destroy their convoys of pickups with machine guns mounted on

An Apple a Day Keeps the Doctor Away! Nutrition for Life by Parul Kharod We all have heard this saying! Is it really true? What do apples have that is so special? Fall is the season for apples. Let’s learn more about this versatile nutritious fruit. Origin of the phrase: Interestingly, this adage, thought to have originated from a Welsh proverb, was first printed in 1866 in an English magazine. Many variations of the phrase were in circulation around the turn of the 20th century. It was published in 1913 in the book Rustic Speech and Folklore by Elizabeth Wright in an old English dialect version, “Ait a happle avore gwain to bed, An’ you’ll make the doctor beg his bread”. Apples have several health benefits: Antioxidants: Apples contain a variety of phytochemicals, including quercetin, catechin, phloridzin and chlorogenic acid, all of which are strong antioxidants. Several studies have found an association between apple consumption and reduced risk of cancer, and reduced risk of cardiovascular disease. These flavonoids help inhibit inflammation and prevent plaque from forming on your artery walls. Apples also contain polyphenol epicatechin, which may lower blood pressure. The various polyphenols present in apples have been associated with lowering risk of cancer as they inhibit cancer cell proliferation and remove free radicals. Eating apples is also linked to a lower risk of diabetes, possibly due to their polyphenol antioxidant content. Prebiotic Fiber: The fibers present in apples have been shown to help regulate blood sugars and thus lower risk of diabetes. The fiber present in apples also helps remove excess cholesterol and improve heart health. The soluble fiber pectin, present in apples helps improve gut health. Pectin is also fermented by beneficial bacteria in the colon, which produces short chain fatty acids that may play a role in the prevention of chronic diseases, including certain cancers and bowel disorders. The fibers can bind with toxins in the body and eliminate them from your system. Pectin can also provide relief from both constipation and diarrhea, depending on the body’s needs. Low Glycemic Index: Apples have low glycemic index. This combined with their high flavonoid content may help to improve insulin sensitivity which may help in preventing diabetes. continued on page 94

Creatures of the Swamp Thinking About Thinking by Balaji Prasad “Society attacks early, when the individual is helpless.” - B.F. Skinner The way things are said can make a difference in how things are received, and in what ends up happening in the real world. This is so because we do not communicate into a void that will faithfully ingest everything that is sent in there in quite the way the sender intended it. For, the destination of the communication is not a Tabula Rasa (a blank slate). There are many many things that exist inside a person that cannot be directly seen – only divined. And, if you fail to divine what you are dealing with, how can you be effective in whatever it is that you are attempting to communicate? It should be clear that communication should not be all about the sender and what is intended to be sent. In fact, it is significantly about the receiver. Once the communication makes its way to a place past a certain point in the communication channel, the gravitational force of the receiving body is the dominant force. The “last mile” Telecom and cable companies are keenly aware of the existence of a “last mile” problem. It is possible to build out a high-capacity infrastructure of fiber and optics and such that can move things close to the speed of light, but which can yet fail to deliver the needed capacity at the point of consumption because the capacity of the circuits near the point of consumption – the last mile – is the weak link in the overall scheme. So too it is with human communication. The “last mile” of communication is controlled by the consumer of the communication, and, as with telecom, it is much more expensive to build or tune that part of the system to make everything work as it should. In fact, it is worse than with telecom – you may never be able to tune those circuits to be receptive because they are fiercely defended by forces that you may not understand. It would clearly behoove the aspiring communicator to have a keen awareness of the existence of this last-mile problem if they are to go beyond aspiration, to realization. The laws of nurture The last mile is a place that is fraught with all kinds of continued on page 56

Prioritizing Mental Health Namaskar, Y’all by Shyama Parui
A couple of decades ago “paagal,” “mental,” and a gesture indicating a loose screw in the head, were used to describe people with mental illnesses. While such overtly rude terms are less in use today, the stigma associated with it has not reduced drastically. When the malaise is intangible and the patient suffers from unseen struggles, it is hard to empathize leading to fear and a lack of compassion. As a child, I remember being afraid of anyone who seemed partially or completely “mad” like the mumbling homeless man who was often spotted near our bus stop or the lady from our neighborhood who was rarely seen or heard as if she was trapped in an invisible cage. The average person probably held a sincere belief that any family member of theirs could not possibly face any psychological disorder and if such a problem were to arise, marrying them off would be the cure. Go figure! This year, the Tokyo Olympics along with its display of athletic prowess, highlighted the urgency of an open discussion around mental health. We witnessed the world’s most decorated gymnast stepping out of certain events when she experienced a case of the “twisties.” From what I understand, it is a familiar term among gymnasts used to describe a mental block during which an athlete loses their spatial awareness during an intense routine. I cannot even begin to imagine how terrifying that must be knowing that a wrong landing could lead to permanent paralysis. Champions such as Simone Biles, Naomi Osaka and Michael Phelps were brave in their moments of vulnerability despite being under constant scrutiny. My respect for them has grown exponentially. Successful athletes are usually role models for strength and perseverance, but the ability to humbly accept when to dial down performance goals for the sake of overall well-being, is rare. Fans err by placing their heroes on pedestals and then revel at knocking them down. Instead, they need to accept the human side of celebrities. After all, invincibility and infallibility are myths that we feed ourselves allowing the adulation to reach toxic levels. Behavioral and psychological issues are not limited to athletes, and it should not be dismissed as a videshi problem. The Diagnostic & Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) lists approximately 297 disorders and simply put, it could happen to anybody. The National continued on page 56

Attempting to build our muscles just before competing in a big race or game is futile, but strength training over time through diligent exercise will bear fruit. wild creatures that have grown in the swamp that is society and culture. And this nurture by the swamp has happened over years and years, even centuries and millennia. For, do we not still talk about what was supposedly said by people we have never met – people such as Aristotle, Confucius or the Buddha? Do they not wield at least as much power over some of our thoughts as does our ranting neighbor who speaks with a passion that is hard to escape? We cannot escape the fact that many of “our” thoughts are underpinned by ideas, concepts and emotional triggers that have been created in the cauldron of society. We may like to see ourselves as creatures of nature but are we not as much creatures of nurture as well? Perhaps even much more so?
In another part of the world, unifiedhealth.in reports that one in every seventh person in India suffers from some form of mental illness. Similar rates probably existed before but our awareness was low. I have heard anecdotes about suicides among women in rural India that were a sad outcome of post-partum depression. In a society that glorifies motherhood, early symptoms were probably misunderstood or brushed aside. Our flawed construction as humans leaves us hopelessly prone to maladies as exemplified by the prolonged COVID 19 pandemic. In addition to the physiological distress experienced by the infected, the uninfected were tormented with psychological difficulties. As if that were not enough, many COVID survivors have been affected by depression and anxiety. In my mind the coronavirus is like the ruthless terrorist who not only opened fire at innocent people, but also planted land mines and timed bombs that will set off multiple waves of destruction in the future. It is imperative that we prioritize mental health so that we can safeguard our families. Change is tough and whether it is large scale behavior change or legislative reforms, it can be excruciatingly slow. So, in this case I have decided to take the matter into my own hands. Truth be told, its impact will be low and yet, it is worth a try. To begin with, I plan to continue educating myself on ailments of the mind and keep a cheat sheet handy so that I can identify signs of common mental disorders early and seek help early. I will give proactive therapy a serious consideration and check in frequently with family and friends for both our sakes. And I hope to do my part in ending the stigma associated with psychological therapy by tossing aside judgment and supporting individuals who’ve raised their hand to ask for help. Prioritizing mental health for your own family is a baby step in the right direction. The long strides manifested as public health reform will need to follow soon. I propose an annual mental health screening for individuals of all age groups that is covered by health insurance. Investing in more counselors and therapists in schools and the workplace will be prudent. I would also recommend periodic follow up screening for gun owners to prevent guns from being in the possession of mentally unstable individuals. My last recommendation may stir up a hornet’s nest, but I prefer to be an idealistic fool rather than an apathetic bystander. Saathee.com
According nurture the status of a second parent It is helpful for a creature of the swamp to be aware that it is a creature of the swamp, that the demons of nurture have shaped it just as much as the gods of nature have. And, of course, that when a creature communicates, that it is doing so to a fellow creature – a fellow swamper. It is not that the swamp is an entirely bad place, despite the metaphor used here to bring out the essence of this idea in a stronger way; after all, the swamp gives us life and sustains us too. The point here though is that it is helpful to be keenly aware of the swampiness of it all so that we are not constantly caught off-guard and subject to strange illusions of being in a paradisical land where everything that is and grows is organic, wholesome and a child of nature alone. So in a world where nurture is seen as a second parent, when the righteous right-winger meets the laissez-faire leftwinger, the two martial artists meet in the middle, take a deep bow, look heavenward and humbly acknowledge that they are creatures of the swamp of society and that they are grateful to the swamp for nurturing them while simultaneously expressing an awareness of their frailty and fragility. And then, after this ceremonial ritual, the two can engage in their fierce art while showing some empathy for the fellow creature that they are thus engaged with. And so, with this constant and explicit acknowledgement, communication can begin to occur with an awareness of the nature of people not located in a pristine vacuum but in the swamp that has been built by us, for us, and of us.

It’s Time for College
they are prepared to pay and start communicating that with the child. The impression parents should not give a child is either, “get in there and we will figure out how to pay” or that “forget about the higher schooling, we just can’t afford it.” It also needs to be evaluated as to what the child is going to get out of college. Nobody should go to college just because everybody says they must go to college. I have known some students who decided college is not for them. They did many other things, some good and some bad, and then once they had good footing about what they like, dislike and in what profession they would be inclined to spend the rest of their life, that was a good time for them to get a four-year or may be higher degree. ‘Know thyself’ does not happen always at the age of 18. And, contrary to common belief, it is not necessary that all should have a college degree. Today, there are many non-degree professions that fetch good money and are begging for apprentices. Increasingly, for cash strapped students, going to a community college is a sound strategy and not a last resort; most of the technical experience there is hands-on and inexpensive. After they graduate from Community College, they can then transfer to a four-year degree program. This makes much sense for so many. Nobody asks where you went to school for the first two years, but they would want to know where you graduated from. It is hard to believe but according to the College Board, more than 70 percent of full-time undergraduate students receive grant aids of some sort. If this is necessary, then families should start thinking about the aid as early as the freshman year of their high school. Ideally those parents who wish to support their child, should start planning for it at the time of the birth of the child or even before that. Much careful financial planning is necessary because now suddenly you are looking in the future, at least 18 to 22 years, and that requires careful strategic thinking. This countdown to college can be a great catalyst to reviewing your household budget and understanding where the money is being spent right now and where some savings can be made. For this to happen both parents must be in sync with each other. The student can also help. Other than the odd jobs they can do, there are many merit scholarships available and there are many scholastic achievements, like AP classes in high school, that will reduce their tuition burden in college, but of course the student must put in much hard work for this and needs to be focused. Whatever you do, parents, I would strongly suggest against an early withdrawal from your retirement plan to pay for college. Students have very many alternatives for financing their education, but your retirement plan has none.
Any Ideas on How to Pay for It? Personal Finances by Mo Vidwans
The old cliché says, “it goes by in a blink of an eye” and never is that cliché truer than when you realize that your child will soon be in college and that you may be the key bearer of most of the costs involved. Your child going to college, actually leaving the roost and spreading their wings is somewhat shocking in itself; much like when the 5-yearold goes to the kindergarten, actually sits in the class, trying to make some sense out of it all and his/her Mom is all upset sitting at home or work, not even able to enjoy a leisurely cup of coffee. It is somewhat unfortunate if the parents were not planning for this day to arrive and then get surprised by it; that will not happen only if you, as parents, were prepared for it long before the actual time comes. The idea of preparing for college expenses has been discussed in this column a few times but even those parents who follow the advice to start early and dutifully contribute to children’s 529 savings plans or other plans might find it a tall order to fund the full price of college. On average, instate tuition plus room and board is around $25,000 this Fall, according to College Board. At a private and prestigious University, the tab could run up to $75,000 (granted their scholarships could bring it down somewhat). The good news in all this pessimistic talk is that there is much that parents and students can still do to make college feasible. Many families just assume outright that they will be required or obliged to pay for the 100 percent of the college expenses. If they can, it is admirable, but most families should assume that a third of the cost should come from their savings, a third from the financial aid and the remaining third from the student’s hard-earned dollars or some other similar way. Students can also limit the toll by being savvy in search for the right school and working hard to earn some money on their own. This process can start at the age of 16 right after the Sophomore year in High School. The real cost of college hinges on two factors; how an institution doles out the financial aid and how badly it wants a prospective student. Absolutely imperative in this discussion is the fact that sooner the parents start thinking about getting ready for Mo Vidwans financial support the better off they are. News Notes Charlotte-Based Author Releases Book of Poetry
BAPS Charities Donates $50K to Support Susan G. Komen’s Mission to Eradicate Breast Cancer
Originally from Indore, Madhya Pradesh, Rekha Bhatia is a Charlottebased poet and has released her new book of Hindi poetry titled Sarhado Ke Paar Darakhto Ke Saaye Me (Across the Border in the Shadows of the Woods). Bhatia has been living in the United States for the past 21 years and most of them in Charlotte. She says, “I love nature, it inspires me.” Many of the poems are about nature, but she also writes about life, relationships, war and soldiers and other topics. She “asks questions to society” and puts her thoughts and experiences into poems. Most of the poems in the book were written in the last 5-10 years and, especially during the pandemic. She has a science and math degree but was always interested in writing. Her poems have been published in several publications and are now gathered here in this volume. Morrisville, NC based writer Dr. Sudha Om Dhingra says of this book, “Jeevan Ke Sabhi Raso Aur Rango Mai Bhigi Kavitaye.” The book is published by Shivna Prakashan, Sihor, M.P. For more details about the book, contact: RekhaBhatia@hotmail.com.
In June 2021, BAPS Charities held its annual walk/run across 70 communities. This year, unlike the past, the event was primarily a virtual one out of concern for the safety of the participants and volunteers due to the ongoing pandemic.
Building from 2020 and continuing its tradition of supporting global and community causes, this year’s “In the Joy of Other Walk/Run” supported Susan G. Komen organization and its efforts to address breast cancer on multiple fronts, including advocacy, research and patient support. Communities that have a sense of shared responsibility have a greater power to provide help and assist those in need. BAPS Charities’ walks and events work to unite in the spirit of service to others. In alignment with this mission, participants in this year’s walk/run event collectively pledged to walk 100 million steps. People of all ages took part, from 5-year-old first-time walkers to senior citizens. The event format allowed participants to achieve their steps in a manner they felt comfortable and safe. It gave families a reason to get out and do something together, all the while bringing attention to a good cause. Over 11,000 registered participants logged over 200 million steps, exceeding the initial goal. Dhruval Amin, a BAPS Charities volunteer, said, “Breast cancer affects communities, their families and their friends. The partnership between BAPS Charities and Susan G. Komen is an opportunity for us to work together to further reduce deaths from breast cancer and increase awareness about this disease.” Dr. Jamin Brahmbhatt, a participant, echoed this sentiment and said, “It’s such a great opportunity to bring the family out and be able to do something together while helping a good cause. I was also inspired to see so many teenagers participating, not just in the walk but also sharing their personal stories on social media. Engaging the next generation is essential, and I am glad BAPS Charities shares that commitment.” The virtual event concluded with the organization’s only in-person walk of this year’s event. Organized in conjunction with Susan G. Komen, participants, volunteers, and supporters gathered at the Los Angeles Coliseum in Los

Houston, TX, Dallas, TX, Seattle, WA, Raleigh, NC, Edison, NJ, and Fremont, CA virtual regional centers and as usual the Bee attracted some top talent in the circuit.
Angeles, CA, to recognize the commendable works of both organizations. During the pre-walk ceremony, which included brief speeches by State Senator Maria Elena Durazo along with many other public officials, BAPS Charities presented Susan G. Koman representatives with a $50,000 donation. The gift was leveraged months earlier as part of a matching gift campaign to raise an additional $50,000 for the cause. All matched contributions will go towards supporting Susan G. Komen’s mission in saving lives and investing in breakthrough research to prevent and cure breast cancer. “It’s astonishing to see everyone get together in new, innovative ways, despite such a tough year with the pandemic. The way young and old adapted to the virtual format and spread the word was fantastic,” said Nilkanth Patel, President, BAPS Charities. “This year, over 11,000 walkers joined the virtual event to take over 200 million steps, together. The collective actions of the community have helped support Susan G. Komen as well as the numerous local and global charitable and humanitarian services conducted by BAPS Charities.” “We are so proud of our partnership with BAPS Charities as they are truly a servant-minded organization, and they demonstrate that generosity every day,” said Paula Schneider, President and CEO of Susan G. Komen. In addition to this annual event, during the pandemic, BAPS Charities has provided over 350,000 pieces of personal protective equipment; donated $200,000 in financial assistance; delivered over 100,000 meals; donated over 20,000 pounds of food to local food banks and has helped vaccinate over 57,000 people at 63 vaccination drives across North America. Also, BAPS Charities provided lifesaving resources and expertise in India through its partner hospitals and volunteers. BAPS Charities actively supports health and well-being efforts throughout the year through Vaccination Drives, Health Fairs, Health Awareness Lectures, and Children’s Health and Safety Day. USCIS Expands Partnerships with Social Security Administration

The USCIS recently announced that applicants filing for lawful permanent resident status are now able to apply for a Social Security number (SSN) or replacement card as part of the adjustment of status application process. Previously, these individuals had to apply for a Social Security number at a Social Security office. USCIS is revising Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status, to include the additional questions needed to apply for an SSN or a replacement card.
The South Asian Spelling Bee concluded its quest for the best speller in the country, by successfully ending yet another virtual season of the program. Six virtual regionals and finals were conducted within four weeks. Spellers from across the country participated in the Saathee.com

“This expansion of our partnership with the Social Security Administration illustrates our commitment to operating our nation’s immigration system more efficiently to save applicants time,” said USCIS Director Ur M. Jaddou. “Eliminating unnecessary bureaucracy and optimizing collaboration across public-serving agencies is a key priority for this agency and the Biden-Harris administration.” After approving Form I-485, in most cases USCIS will electronically transmit the data to the Social Security Administration. Upon receiving the data, the Social Security Administration will automatically assign an original SSN or issue a replacement card, as appropriate. This partnership with the Social Security Administration will not increase the filing fee for Form I-485. This change to Form I-485 is effective immediately, and applicants can begin filing with the updated form today. USCIS receives about 576,000 Forms I-485 annually. USCIS Removes Barriers to U.S. Citizenship for Children Born Abroad Through Assisted Reproductive Technology The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has announced an updated policy guidance affecting children born outside of the United States and the determination of whether children born through assisted reproductive technology (ART) are considered to have been born “in wedlock.” This policy update will allow a non-genetic, nongestational legal parent of a child to transmit U.S. citizenship to the child if the parent is married to the child’s genetic or gestational parent at the time of the child’s birth, and the relevant jurisdiction recognizes both parents as the child’s legal parents. “USCIS is taking a crucial step towards ensuring fair access and support for all families and their loved ones,” said USCIS Director Ur M. Jaddou. “We are committed to removing unnecessary barriers promoting policies for all people as they embark on their journey to citizenship and beyond.” This guidance will also be applied to the family-based petitions for determining whether a child is born in wedlock. Previously, USCIS required that the child’s genetic parents (or the legal gestational parent and one of the genetic parents) be married to one another for a child to be considered born in wedlock. In 2014, USCIS updated its policy to allow a parent who is the gestational and legal parent of a child under the law of the relevant jurisdiction at the time of the child’s birth to transmit U.S. citizenship to the child if all other citizenship requirements are met. For more information on USCIS, visit Uscis.gov.
Luke Jerram’s Gaia, a three-dimensional, illuminated sculpture of Earth, will be suspended in Founders Hall during this fall’s Charlotte SHOUT! festival, taking place Sept. 17-Oct. 3, 2021. Measuring 23 feet in diameter, the rotating installation will allow visitors to view Earth as it appears from the moon and serve as a reminder of the need to protect our planet. “Gaia reminds us of the beauty and fragility of the earth. It encourages us to think about ways that each of us can respond to protect our planet,” said Blumenthal Performing Arts President Tom Gabbard. Gaia will be free and open to the public throughout the duration of Charlotte SHOUT!. Special events at the venue — including environmental discussions, performances and fitness classes—will be announced at a later date. Next, Of Earth and Sky will make its debut at Charlotte SHOUT! This large-scale installation, also conceptualized by artist Luke Jerram (Gaia), features pieces from local poets. Originally presented in Gloucester, poems written by local writers will be curated and installed across multiple locations in Charlotte. Over 200 poems have already been submitted by the public, with selected pieces to be announced June 30. This instillation will be free and open to the public Sept. 10-Oct. 3, 2021. A fan favorite from the 2019 SHOUT! Festival will also return — Amanda Parer’s Intrude. Those very large rabbits are back in 2021. The bunnies of Intrude will stand tall, yet Saathee.com

As summer wanes, here in the south we still get warm and sunny days through September. Mother Nature is still working her magic, the sun is bright, the trees are green, awaiting changes in leaves and late summer flowers are blooming and the birds are singing. The month is a perfect time for picnics as the days are sunny with comfortable temperatures. Here is a recipe for easy and refreshing cocktails to serve on backyard decks or picnics.

In a blending jar, add grapes, lemon juice, lemon zest, grated ginger, mint leaves, powdered sugar, pink salt, and Chaat Masala. Blend the mixture to a smooth purée. 3. In a glass, strain the purée using a strainer.

4. Make sure to wash the blending jar and strainer. Now add the orange and sweet lime pieces with the same ingredients and same measurements. In another glass, strain the orange and sweet lime purée using a strainer. 5. Take two serving glasses and add crushed ice. Now in one glass, pour the grape purée and in the other glass, pour the orange and sweet lime purée. Then add Sprite (or any desired soda of your choice). Stir and enjoy the drink. Each drink serves one person. Double the ingredients for more servings. The name magenta cooler results from the grape purée color. As the orange sweet lime and lemons belong to the citrus family, so the name Citrus Cocktail.

Dances of India

celebrates the victory of Durga Devi or Amba Matha as the women move in a circular direction, singing at the same time measure by clapping their palms or snapping their fingers to the accompaniment of folk instruments. One can only say that Durga puja is the largest outdoor art festival on earth. The music, dancing, and art displayed and performed during the Durga puja played an integral part in connecting the community in Bengal, Gujarat, and eventually across India and the world. In Kuchipudi repertoire, one of the most famous dance dramas is the Mahishasura Mardhini, the killing of the buffalo demon Mahishasura. Goddess fought with evil demon for nine nights and ten days. The name Vijayadashami is also derived from the Sanskrit words “Vijaya-Dashami” literally meaning the victory on the tenth day. This is the unstoppable beauty of our Indian classical and folk dances. Every festival is celebrated with music and dance, both in classical and folk traditions alike. There are many similarities in these dance forms even though they are from different regions. I only mentioned a handful of dance styles and folk traditions. I guess at least this gives you an idea of the vastness that exists in India when it comes to dance and music. I hope you still get to celebrate these festivals and stay safe. Dr. Maha Gingrich For questions or comments, contact via email at Gingrichmaha@gmail.com Saathee.com

We were united in a tragedy that the US had not experienced since Pearl Harbor. Perhaps this sense of togetherness also stemmed from a common enemy that served to widen the range of in-groups to whom people felt they belonged and encourage fellowship among those facing the same threat. This connection of sorrow is a silver lining, in a way. Because of our forced detachment the mind is able to spend more time reflecting on grief and grapple its meaning. Loss can inspire people to examine life more deeply than they did before, and foster a greater awareness born from their own fragility and a stronger sense of purpose and ultimately... resilience. If there’s anything that grief through collective crises have taught us, it’s that this sense of tolerance must be managed with an understanding of peoples’ fears and wishes, including their inherent need for kinship and acceptance. Unfortunately, with the world’s social structure so strained by social distancing through necessity, I’m not sure if we as a people will be able to experience a true sense of togetherness like that. Yet, there are moments where we do find a way to bring just a little bit of hope back into the world. We’re all facing this pandemic together… and a sense of common fate, shared identity, and acting for the common or the social good is needed more than ever. Life isn’t about going through the storm… it’s about learning to dance in the rain and that kind of celebration is much more special when shared with friends. I’d like to think that my grandfather would join in to such a dance and fill the hearts of everyone around him with his warmth and light.

The man lain out in his easy chair when my father opened the door… had lost most of that sturdy physique and all his hair. He reached a wobbly hand up to pull down a heavy breathing mask just so he could give me a weak smile and whisper my name. He was in the final stages of terminal lung cancer, but somehow a sliver of that warm spirit was still inside the emaciated state he was now in. His death hit the entire family extremely hard. I was the youngest of all the cousins with full memories of him, as my next closest cousin was only three when he passed and only has vague pictures in her mind. On the outside, I was just a kid who had her first full experience of loss. The world felt strange as I didn’t quite understand at the time how much of a pillar of my existence he was, until that pillar had suddenly crumbled and disappeared. He became the first of many loved ones I’d lose over the years, including my mother a short eight years later to cancer as well. Still… we found solace in the memories shared amongst us at various get-togethers over the years. In the process of sharing those unforgettable stories, each of the lost never truly went away. We, as human beings, have had to deal with grief and loss in various ways. Most of the Western world has come to categorize this concept as the “five stages of grief”. In fact, it’s become part of the zeitgeist to manage each of these stages in turn: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and finally acceptance. While this appears to be a baseline, in truth we all deal with sorrow in so many ways that it’s far too difficult to pinpoint. A bereaved person can feel sad, but also experience anger, irritability, tiredness, a lack of motivation, or a plethora of other emotions. It’s often in these times of grief that we as people are drawn to find like-minded individuals with whom we can confide our pain. There’s a reason that ‘misery loves company’ has become such a popular phrase. Especially in these trying times of a global pandemic, our society has been forced to shift towards a world without as much social interaction. Some of us have lost the ability to comfortably collaborate with others beyond a computer, tablet, or phone screen and it’s only getting worse. It seems, perhaps, a tad ironic that this month marks the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. A seemingly quiet Tuesday morning in the United States when news feeds were suddenly shaken by the sight of a passenger plane crashing into one of the twin tower buildings in New York City which would kick off a sequence of tragic events that would send out shockwaves for years to come. If there’s one silver lining I do miss from the aftermath of that fateful day, it has to be sight after sight of fellow human beings sharing in this overall sense of camaraderie and support. We supported the courageous work of the first responders. We came together to assist families of the fallen. Saathee.com

Jodee: I hope ADF keeps dancing; what the festival looks like isn’t as important as what it does to support modern dance. In 2022 perhaps we will resemble more what we looked like in 2019 and that could be great. But with change, good or bad, one needs to make sure they find opportunities. I think this season is a perfect example of that! Dilip: Would you like to share anything else with our readers? Jodee: We encourage families to bring their kids to experience live dance. With the purchase of an adult ticket, kids (6-17) can come free! What are you waiting for..l get your tickets and come out for ADF’s 2021 season! Details: AmericanDanceFestival.org

SEPTEMBER 2021
Aries (March 21 – April 19)
Libra (September 23 – October 22)
This will be a very action-oriented period for you. You could gain a great deal of success within your business or job. Your friends and family should offer whatever assistance you need. You will achieve relief from financial worries. Attraction and new relations with someone of a different gender will help you feel relaxed. A change of residence or investment in a new business is also indicated.
You may not see any major changes in your day-to-day life this month, but things should be happy and comfortable. You’ll remain busy due to a heavy workload. A minor increase in income is possible. You will also enjoy co-operation and support from your partner and friends. You could see an opportunity on horizon but may have to wait until end of next month to utilize it. Relax and enjoy a steady routine for now.
Taurus (April 20 – May 20)
Scorpio (October 23 – November 21)
Try to not be impulsive and instead take your time with any important decisions. You may suffer by taking risks. Maintain good relations with your associates and friends, as you may need their help to solve your problems. Also control your speech as any egoistic language could place you in hot water. However, this is a good time for traveling to visit friends and family. Keep a close eye on your health.
This month there will be family happiness and you will feel content. A sudden unexpected gain and rise in status are also possible. You will meet higher officials and authorities. Your fame and reputation will increase. You might incline towards religion and might visit sacred places. A balanced state of mind is indicated while overall happiness will be there.
Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21)
Gemini (May 21 – June 20)
This should be a very comfortable month as you’re surrounded by a pleasant environment. You will be favorably inclined towards someone of a different gender. If you put in just little extra effort, your income will increase above your expectations. You may want to celebrate and enjoy music and poetry. Your relatives will extend their full support towards you. Enjoy the surprise.
You should see mixed results this month. There may be many opportunities on the horizon, but you won’t be able to utilize them all. A health issue may disturb you, and this is especially not a good time for heart patients. There may be a rise in status and position, but without the financial benefits those usually entail. An incredibly positive change is possible during the last few days of the month.
Capricorn (December 22 – January 19)
Cancer (June 21 – July 22)
Income and expenses should balance each other out this month. You may experience a delay in pursuits involving education or business. Wise decisions may harbor you from spending money wastefully. An investment with long-term savings will prove beneficial. This is a good time to think about changing your workplace or field of study. A dispute with family is likely possible, but you should still listen to your parents.
Unexpected health problems will be your focus this month. Maintain cordial relations with relatives or you could risk destroying that familial bond. There could be lots of opportunities coming your way, but you may not be able to utilize them. Financial losses are also possible including a serious legal problem. However, your family should be able to help.
Aquarius (January 20 – February 18)
Leo (July 23 – August 22)
There is no reason to be upset, but your peace of mind could be out sorts this month. Your income, job and health will be in order, but something will constantly feel… off. Try to be noble and charitable to feel satisfied and happy. A long-distance journey during the last week of the month will prove rewarding. Keep working hard. Meditation may help rebuild self-confidence.
This month you will be of amiable disposition to avoid friction. A pleasant journey is quite possible. You may incline towards religious and social activities. You might even develop a taste for high philosophy or literature. Your trade and business will survive due to your prompt and decisive action. Drive very carefully or avoid driving altogether if possible.
Pisces (February 19 – March 20)
Virgo (August 23 – September 22)
Be prepared for a major change in career. Due to your caliber and skills, you will bring excellent results in your activities. If you involve educated people in your project, the outcome will be quite favorable. You will make strenuous efforts to satisfy your aspirations, and these aggressive acts will pay dividends. However, a family related problem will need attention. The state of your health will also remain satisfactory.
After a very positive start, the month will end with less than positive results. Unexpected expenses will badly affect your budget. Try not to be too charitable as your partners will attempt to exploit your good nature. However, this is a favorable time for investments in real estate property. Minor health relief could be there. Avoid social gatherings for the rest of this year, if possible.

Apples have been shown to reduce risk of diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Additionally, may help regulate immune responses and protect against asthma. A large study in more than 68,000 women found that those who ate the most apples had the lowest risk of asthma. Apples may also be good for the bones! Research shows that the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds in apples may help with bone density and strength. The plant compounds in apples, namely chlorogenic acid and catechin, may also protect the stomach lining. Apples may preserve neurotransmitters that may prevent memory loss, and thus help protect brain health.
It’s good to see activists and politicians wanting to do something about carbon emissions. There are things we can do as a community to mitigate climate change to the best of our abilities, while creating new economic opportunities via evolving technologies and renewable energy. We must also realize that the effects may already be irreversible and efforts to reduce carbon emissions and soften climate change may already be too late. But we must make efforts in this endeavor. Increasing the capacities of renewables such as solar and wind will help. Massive conservation efforts to reduce use of fossil fuels will help, but we must also put into place new policies and thinking.
