Once again we meet in September. It’s been raining a lot, so please take care of your health. In the next couple months, Luang Prabang will approach its 20th anniversary of being a World Heritage town. As part of the celebration for the special occasion, an elephant caravan will be arranged from Xayabouli to Luang Prabang. You can find out how impressive walking with the giant animal is by turning to our Sabaidee Spotlight pages inside. Also in this issue we recommend a newly opened Brazilian restaurant in Vientiane on the Table Highlights page, and this month’s ASEAN connect feature focuses on Hue in Vietnam. If you would like to offer suggestions or comments about our magazine, and also get the latest news updates, you can contact or follow us on our Facebook fan page at facebook.com As ever, I hope that all readers will enjoy reading our magazine.

he Elephant Caravan is a walk back in time, when the rich and powerful would ride upon these magnificent animals as they trekked across the jungles. These magnificent, powerful and patient giants would walk across the lands, collecting people from the moored boats and pavilions. When not moving people or possessions elephants were pressed into the hard labour of moving logs. Huge teak logs, a major industry in Lao. Now, elephants no longer are the vehicle of choice for the rich or the animal of labour for the loggers. So in a land where many people are still struggling to make a living, and elephants cost a lot to feed and house, no elephant can be kept for free. The land of a million elephants is now the land of the 1000 elephants and because times have been tough, very few females have been allowed to breed. A poor family cannot afford the two - three years of no income that it necessary for a female elephant to deliver and raise a healthy young calf. Slowly this is now changing as the tourism industry is starting to create a more generous lifestyle for the elephant and the mahout. Baby elephants are once again being born. The elephant conservation center (www. elephantconservationcenter.com) wants to bring back the awareness, knowledge, love and respect for these animals. The mahouts, most of which have lived and worked with their elephants for generations are the keepers of the gene pool, knowledge and the husbandry of these gentle giants. Out of respect for their love of their elephants a not for profit, education, awareness and celebration is brought to life through the Elephant Caravan. The Long March as it is known, will be a 500 km on and off road walk, over 2

26

months from October 27th to December 7th when it arrives in Luang Prabang to celebrate its 20th UNESCO Anniversary. 12 elephants with their mahouts in the exact same way that they would have transferred explorers or members of the former Royal Family in the far past, will traverse 8 Districts in 2 provinces of Northern Lao. On December the 8th elephants will participate in the Elephant Baci ceremony in Luang Prabang. An additional 8 elephants, from local communities will join the original 12 and these elephants, including the white elephant of Luang Prabang, will make the final procession down the main street of Luang Prabang on December 9th as part of the larger parade and ceremony to mark the last 20 years of UNESCO listing. The caravan travels with a film crew, professional educators who have plays and puppetry and storytelling they aim to use to educate the local children and villagers about the true nature of the elephant and the importance of maintaining these beautiful animals as part of the living culture of Lao. The performing troupe combines both Lao and European Actors. It is not suitable for visitors to join for most of the tour, as the caravan will not be travelling along the main roads. This tour is all about the elephants, so the route will follow jungle paths, local roads and rivers. At certain times the caravan will stop in major cities to perform and then all tourists and visitors are welcome. You can follow the Caravan on: Website: www.theelephantcaravan.org Facebook page: https://www.facebook. com/pages/The-ElephantCaravan/41489919200094 A video can be seen here: vimeo.com/122063789

Samba Brazilian Steakhouse 2nd Floor, Mall Square, Phonexay Rd., Saysettha, Vientiane Capital

Brazil is far away, in South America. Ordinarily, it would be difficult to have the opportunity to feast on Brazilian food in Vientiane. But now, Vientiane foodies have the opportunity to sample authentic Brazilian cuisine at a new restaurant called Samba Brazilian. General Manager Vatthana Souvannarath, also known by her nickname Francis, gives us an idea of what to expect at Samba Brazilian Steakhouse by telling us that meat and barbeque lovers will be most pleased. The restaurant offers more than 15 barbeque dishes, including Rump Steak, Beef & Cheese, Pork Char Siew, Pork Ribs, Chicken Wings, Smoked Duck Breast, Shrimp with Bacon, and Dory Fish Fillet, among others. The meat is

Open daily 11:30 – 14:00 18:00 – 22:30

fresh grilled, and cut and served hot. In addition to barbeque, the restaurant also presents a buffet service. Brazilian buffet is made up of a wide variety of salads, cold meats, seafood, cheese, bread and soup, a sushi bar, and a dessert menu that includes more than 50 satisfying sweets. All dishes are prepared by skilled chefs, with a Brazilian Head Chef running the grill. Quality meats are imported from Australia and New Zealand, with chicken and fish from Thailand, and high quality pork from Laos. If you want to try delicious Brazilian cuisine, visit Samba Brazilian Steakhouse exclusively in Lao PDR., Vientiane.

40

41

Hue is most renowned as the former imperial capital of Vietnam where the Nguyen Emperors ruled from the Palace of Supreme Harmony from 1802 to 1945. The Nguyen’s stately citadel, their Forbidden Purple City, and their magisterial tombs are an East Asian wonderland, and the foundation of the city’s appeal as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. But the city is also home to an amazing collection of colonial French architecture. After consolidating their hold on Vietnam in the latter part of the 19th Century, the French built a ‘new city’ in Hue across the Perfume River from the very Vietnamese Imperial City. Though modernity has brought the wrecking ball to some of these historic sites, no visit to Hue is complete without a bit of dreamy contemplation of what once was. Here are the top five colonial French structures worthy of a visit. Remarkably enough, they all lie on a single road, Le Loi Street, which parallels the Perfume River. This makes checking them all out as easy as a kilometer-long walking tour.

Hue Railway Station

photo Huong Lan

42

The raspberry-red Hue railway station opened in 1906 as the northern terminal of the Danang-Hue leg of the Transindochinois Line and endures still as a picturesque stop between Saigon and Hanoi. Though Gustave Eiffel’s name is invoked frequently in Vietnam, so much so that you almost wonder whether the man himself lived here and pretty much built the place, he was not responsible for this building. But his firm did design the nearby White Tiger Bridge, which finally linked the northsouth railway in the 1930s.

photo La Residence Hue Hotel & Spa

In 1930, the colonial French governor of Indochina needed a guest house,so he built the art deco marvel that endures today as MGallery La Residence Hue Hotel & Spa. The centerpiece of the hotel is the colonial guest house, which would be as at home on Miami’s South Beach as it is on the banks of the Perfume River. Note the nautical hallmarks of the Streamline Moderne school of art deco — the porthole windows, the long horizontal coping, and the bowed facade. The railings evoke the romance of a ship at sea. Neither of the annexes is original to the era, but look as if they are.

3. Quoc Hoc High School Quoc Hoc is what Vietnam has instead of Eton. Everyone from Ho Chi Minh to Ngo Dinh Diem studied here, and its alumni is a who’s who list of major 20th Century Vietnamese leaders. Such is the school’s prestige today that the city’s very best students still flock to its halls. The school was founded in its present location in 1896, but the plumcolored European buildings seen today only date back to1915.

4. Le Cercle Sportif Like 5 Le Loi above, Le Cercle Sportif, which is hard by the Phu Xuan Bridge over the Perfume River, is a fine specimen of the Streamline Moderne school of art deco. Back in the day, the city’s colonial elite congregated here to play tennis, to swim in a pool that was on site until the 1990s, and to drink in the view of the river from a veranda that laps out over the water. One contemporary French source dates the building’s construction to 1940.

Truong Tien Bridge One of just 27 bridges known to be built by the legendary Gustav Eiffel, the Truong Tien Bridge is as much a part of the dreams and poems of the people in Hue, as it is a way to cross the Perfume River. Construction on the 400-meter, seven-trestle bridge began in 1897 and was completed in 1899. Its grand opening was celebrated in 1900 with King Thanh Thai himself cutting the red ribbon. photo La Residence Hue Hotel & Spa
