HOW TO READ INCI ON PRODUCT LABELS?
HOW TO READ COSMETIC COMPOSITIONS? INCI – International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients. Each manufacturer is obliged to provide the exact composition of the product they deliver to the market on the product packaging. Names of chemical compounds are provided in English, while names of plants – in Latin. The composition is provided in the percentage order – from the highest to the lowest one.
The first cosmetic ingredient is the base for the manufacture. The order of ingredients: the base, active substances, extracts, moisturizers, anti-oxidants, soothing ingredients, preservatives, fragrance substances and colorings. Colorings are marked with the CI symbol. It is worth to remember the range of natural colorings, i.e. CI 75100 to CI 77947.

NO PARABENS
NO VASELINE
Parabens, in other words – preservatives. Preservatives are chemical compounds added to cosmetic preparations in order to extend their lives. They are probably the most used preservative, antiseptic, fungostatic and disinfecting agents: their concentration is 0.4%. Their disadvantage is that they may cause allergies.
Vaseline – a sticky, unscented substance obtained in the processing of crude oil, does not dissolve in water. When mixed with fat, it has a skin softening effect – it is an emollient. The so-called cosmetic (hydrated) Vaseline is a mix of 20-25% of Vaseline and water, preserved by boric acid and perfumed with a fragrance oil, with no care properties – it resists water.
NO FORMALDEHYDE Formaldehyde is a solid substance with preservative, hardening and anti-sweat effects. The preservative is forbidden in Poland. NO SLES, SLS, ALS Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES), Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate (ALS). Detergents, i.e. mixtures of emulsifying and dispersing agents of dirt, which displace it from the washed surfaces with the ability of hydrating them, and foaming agents.
NO PARAFFIN OILS Paraffin oil is a colorless, oily, unsaponifiable liquid which creates an emulsion after the use of an emulsifier. It belongs to the group of mineral oils. NO SILICONES Silicones – organosilicon compounds obtained through the polycondensation. A silicone layer resists water and other nutrients necessary for its proper functioning. NO ETHANOLAMINES Ethanolamine – used as a softening and emulsifying agent in order to obtain washing agents, and as a plasticizer in the plastic industry.

PROPOSITION OF A THERAPY WITH AN ALGEA MASK Step 1 – t horoughly cleanse skin (using gel, lotion or other make-up remover) Step 2 – a pply peeling suited for the skin type (enzymatic, corundum), rinse and dry skin, then tone it Step 3 – m assage a properly selected serum / concentrate into skin; you can also use a light consistency mask and wait until its partial absorption Step 4 – a pply algae on the prepared skin, leave them on for about 15-20 minutes, remove as a whole Step 5 – m assage properly selected face and eye contour creams into skin

HOW TO USE Mix the mask with water until you obtain a smooth mass with a creamy consistency, and immediately apply it on the cleansed face and neck avoiding the eye contour area. After ca. 15-20 minutes, when algae set completely, remove the whole mask. Remove remnants with a damp cotton pad.

MANUFACTURING The manufacturing process has remained unchanged almost since the beginning of soap existence which, just like years ago, is handmade in accordance with the old ritual. First, olive oil is slowly boiled in special vats with an addition of soda from sea salt extract (NaCl in INCI - ingredient necessary for saponification). At the end of the slow boiling process, when saponification occurs, the substance is enriched with laurel oil. After filtration and cooling, the soap – still green – is hand cut, marked and left in special caves to dry for a few next months. Its color changes then into reddish, the inside, however, remains unchanged, olive green. The procedure allows us to fully keep all valuable olive and laurel oil properties and close their essence in the form of elegant bars, without using preservatives. Directly before sale, every single bar is brushed and cleaned.

TIPS • The most important is to remember that a burning candle is a “live” fire; that’s why you should never leave a burning candle without control! • Each candle burns differently – depending on its shape, size and form. • Do not place the candle in a draft but pay attention to whether the room where you use it is well ventilated. • Before lighting the candle, make sure that its wick is no longer than 10 mm. • If you light a candle with a too long wick, the flame can be too large; this might make the candle burn irregularly or cause the formation of soot. • If you light a candle with a too short wick, the flame can be to small which usually results in candle extinguishing or burning a small basin and leaving a wide candle edge. In this case, you should empty the basin of liquid paraffin and cut the edge before it cools down completely. • Burning the candle should always take place on a non-flammable base. You should never place burning candles one under another.
HOW TO USE / THE USE Candles are quite sensitive to sunlight and temperature; that’s why you should protect them from these factors. Under the influence of light, candle might simply fade and change from beautiful red to pink. High temperature might make it change its shape. Skin /cutis/ covering body surface consists of epidermis, dermis and hypodermis. Epidermis constitutes a direct border between the body and the surrounding environment. It consists of five layers composed consecutively from the bottom to the top: • s tratum germinativum / also called stratum basale • s tratum spinosum • s tratum granulosum • s tratum lucidium • s tratum corneum • S tratum germinativum consitutes a direct connection between epidermis and dermis. It is a plane for the substance exchangebetween blood and epidermis. • Stratum germinativum and stratum spinosum are a living epidermis with a reproductive capacity. Cell reproduction takes place in stratum basale; that’s why epidermis keeps regenerating. Cells move to the surface where they become gradually cornified, die and exfoliate. • S tratum germinativum contains stem cells: Their division triggers regeneration and growth of epidermis. It consists of a layer of keratinocytes in which the process of fibrous protein production (keratin and melanocytes, which constitute a pigment called melanin, and cells taking part in immune mechanisms) occurs. • S tratum spinosum is built of a few layers which become flattened and move upwards. The substance that cements cells is a combination of proteins and mucopolysaccharides. Stratum spinosum is a retaining construction which provides skin with cohesiveness and firmness. •M ucopolysaccharides: i.a. hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulfate also present in dermis; due to their exceptional absorbent properties, these compounds constitute a water storage; difficulties with maintaining proper skin hydration occur when the content of hyaluronic acid diminishes with age and because of ageing processes. • S tratum granulosum consists of many spindle cells with flattened nuclei (filled with basophilic keratohyalin granules) which participate in the process of keratin production. • S tratum lucidium lies beneath stratum corneum. It is visible only in cornified epidermis of hands and feet. Stratum licidium is where the conversion of keratohyalin and other ingredients into an NMF /natural moisturizing factor/begins.

• Stratum corneum is composed of flattened cells with no nuclei – corneocytes – filled with protein called keratin and NMF. Keratin protects against radiation, chemical and mechanical factors, and binds water preventing its evaporation: Thanks to that, stratum corneum stays elastic. On its layer, there’s a lipid coat: It’s presence is of great importance for maintaining proper hydration of stratum corneum and skin. Lipid coat can be compared to a protective film; it’s a combination of sebum, waxes, fatty acids, hydrocarbons, mono-, diand triglycerides, as well as lipids from epidermis cells. Cell regeneration process in epidermis lasts 26-28 days. It becomes longer with age. Continuous division and creation of new cells take place in the deepest layer of epidermis. Cells move upwards and undergo a slow process of cornification (keratosis). When they reach skin surface, they exfoliate in the form of microscopic corneous scales. Thanks to that process, skin is continuously regenerated and can remain fully functional. With age, the loss of cells in epidermis is faster than the growth of new ones. Skin becomes thinner and thinner which leads to formation of wrinkles. • Corium dermis is closely connected with hypodermis. It consists of two layers: Reticular which constitutes ca. 80% of skin thickness and papillary which lies just beneath epidermis. Hypodermis is a connective tissue. Among basic structural proteins building up connective tissue, collagen, constituting its vast majority, and elastin should be singled out. Collagen creates fibres which make skin resistant, while elastin, which has elastic properties, provides skin with elasticity. • Subcutaneous tissue /subcutis/, an even fat layer, has a protective function. With age, it becomes thinner, uneven, and irregular fat deposits accumulate. The content of water in a properly hydrated epidermis amounts to ca. 15%, in dermis – 60 to 70%. Strong hygroscopic properties are attributed mainly to hyaluronic acid; that’s why, it is often added to hydrating creams. The content of hyaluronic acid in the skin decreases with age which is one of the causes of insufficient hydration of senile skin.

HAIR STRUCTURE
Hair lies in a scalp gap padded with epidermis, called hair follicle. Hair consists of a shaft sticking above scalp surface and a root – the hidden part. The deepest part of the root is a bulb which is the place of hair growth. It is built by stem cells which are intensively divided and move upwards; it results in hair shafts becoming systematically longer. Above stem cell layer, there is a layer of melanocytes responsible for hair color. Hair follicle is located diagonally towards skin surface. On the side it leans to, it has an arrector pili muscle attached from the follicle to epidermis. Sebaceous gland is located between the follicle and the muscle. As a result of muscle contraction, sebum produced in the gland comes out and hair becomes greasy. The sebum layer which covers shaft constitutes an additional hair protection. • medulla – a central hair part which is usually an empty space containing single, not fully cornified cells, • cortex – the proper hair body consisting of longitudinal cells which create fibers assembled into bundles. These cells contain melanin which provides hair with color, • cuticle – the outer layer of skin, supposed to protect the shaft. Proper hair hydration is maintained by a healthy cuticle. Cuticle, built of dead cells with keratin, creates a barrier which prevents water evaporation and shaft dryness. Sebum, produced by sebaceous glands, has an important role in the protection of hair against adverse external factors. It is released to hair follicles and then spreads over along the shaft covering its surface. Oiled hair is more resistant to the effects of drying factors. Due to the amount of produced sebum, we can divide hair into normal, oily and dry. NORMAL HAIR Covered by a proper amount of sebum which provides a healthy, fresh appearance with a delicate, satin shine. OILY HAIR Tends to cover with an excessive amount of fat. It results in an unaesthetic, oily appearance. DRY HAIR Is insufficiently oiled which causes dryness and dull appearance.

Hair has a specific lifespan; after that, it dies and falls out. Every day, we lose 50-100 hair. An average hair lifespan is 3-4 years. During this time, hair undergoes various changes which add up to the so called hair growth cycle. HAIR GROWTH CYCLE HAS THE FOLLOWING STAGES • t he growth phase – anagen, the stage of hair growth. The bulb is firmly attached to the papilla which provides proper hair nutrition and intensive cell division. It takes an average of 3-4 years. • t he regressing stage – catagen, during this stage, the lower root part dies and transforms into a so called hair club. The club separates itself from the papilla which makes further hair nutrition impossible. From that moment, hair is nourished by way of diffusion through follicle walls. The stage takes an average of 2 weeks. • t he resting phase – telogen, the final stage when hair is near the follicle surface and falls out when being pulled gently, e.g. during hair combing. After the finished cycle, a new hair replaces the lost one; the new hair passes through all the phases. It is believed that hair follicle may complete the cycle 20-30 times during the whole life. It contains a countless wealth of active substances and anti-tumour compounds, more than 80% of unsaturated fatty acids and a high concentration of vitamin E. CALCAREOUS RED ALGAE – wgrow in the sea at depths of 15-25 m. Due to their resemblance to coral, they have often been mistaken for it; It was not until the 19th century that red algae were recognized as a separate species. They grow very slowly, ca. 1 mm per year. Over time, they die, get covered with calcium crystals and become white. Lithothamium algae contains a lot of mineral ingredients, amino acids, vitamins and antioxidants. They are especially rich in calcium: they contain more than – until now considered the greatest source of calcium – oyster shells. Algae particles in gels effectively but also gently cleanse skin of impurities and dead epidermis. It allows for the everyday use of the body scrub wash. CUCUMBER EXTRACT – cucumber belongs to the cucurbits and is probably derived from the wild species growing in India, in the foothills of the Himalayas, even 3000 years ago. About 2000 years B.C. its cultivation spread in the Mediterranean countries. In the 16th century, it appeared in Poland and many other European countries. For centuries, cucumber has been used in the folk medicine as a medicament and to improve one’s good looks. PAPAIN – enzyme obtained from papaya; it exfoliates and normalizes; it accelerates cell renewal – strengthens the intercellular cement, maintains proper cohesion of epidermis cells. PAPAIN AND BROMELAIN – keratolytic fruit enzymes obtained from Carica Papaya (papaya) fruit and Bromelaceae (pineapple). Closed in micro capsules, they are activated with water. They loosen peptide (protein)-bindings and exfoliate rough epidermis, smooth and even skin color. PEARL – rich in amino acids, mineral salts and micro elements. It strengthens skin structure and inhibits ageing processes. It functions as a natural UV filter. PEPHA®-CTIVE – an active complex of ingredients obtained from Dunaliella Salina micro algae with skin energizing effects. Thanks to the nourishing cocktail of amino acids, carbohydrates and mineral ingredients, it stimulates cell energy centers to produce ATP, as well as protects them against oxidative stress. It provides the effects of rejuvenation, skin color improvement, skin brightening and unification. PINEAPPLE – we owe its presence on our tables to Columbus who discovered it in 1439 when he reached Guadeloupe. Nowadays, it is grown in almost every tropical country. Pineapple fruit is rich in vitamins (A, PP, C vitamins B), mineral ingredients, fiber, sugars and bromelain enzyme which wasn’t isolated until 1970s. It enables you to remove dead epidermis cells, is very gentle to the skin (also couperose one) and does not cause irritation at the same time. PHYTIC ACID – present in some cereal, seeds of fruit and legumes, nuts. In higher concentrations, it is used in brightening preparations, especially combined with AHA acids. Due to its strong anti-free-radical properties, it prevents inflammations and aging processes. When added to the formulation in low concentrations, it improves skin hydration and elasticity, as well as enables penetration of other active substances of the preparation deep into epidermis. POLYPLANT FRUIT – an active ingredient obtained from apples. It has perfect washing effects, foams perfectly even in hard water. It is exceptionally gentle, removes even eye make up, does not upset hydrolipid skin barrier, and does not leave the feeling of skin shrinkage at the same time. PUMPKIN FLESH EXTRACT – a rich source of sugars, vitamins, carotinoids, proteins,minerals and amino acids. Glucose and fructose hydrate and keep water in the epidermis, create a protective film which prevents water evaporation from intercellular spaces. Beta-carotene and vitamins: A, C and E are a cocktail of antioxidants which inhibit the skin aging process. The extract is also a rich source of enzymes which regulate the process of exfoliation: Their effects provide skin with smoothness and radiance. QUESTICE PLUS – cools, brings relief. RED TEA EXTRACT – in Europe, tea appeared in the 17th century. Many varieties of tea come from the same species but their properties result from the processes they undergo after harvesting. Red tea undergoes an additional fermentation and lagering process. ROSEMARY – is a strongly scented Mediterranean bush. Its name comes from the Latin words: Ros – dew and marinus – from the sea. Ancient Greeks and Romans used it during ceremonies, it was a protection from diseases. Rosemary extract is a toning, astringent and skin firming ingredient, it counteracts wrinkle formation. Rosemary oil has stimulating effects – both mentally (belongs to aphrodisiacs) and physiologically – has a strong effect on tissues and cells. SALIX ALBA EXTRACT – regulates sebum secretion and epidermis exfoliation. SEA MUD EXTRACT – smooths, soothes skin lesions, absorbs sebum. SESAME OIL – obtained by cold-pressing of Sesamum Indicum seeds, which come from South-East Asia, Middle Africa, Egypt and China. One of the oldest oils used for cosmetic purposes. It is very rich in unsaturated fatty acids (Omega-6 and -9), minerals, tocopherols and vitamin B6 . It is recommended for the care of dry, mature skin with poor blood supply and cellulite. It protects skin against external factors, prevents water loss (TEWL), improves elasticity and hydration. In Ayuverdic therapies, the oil is used for a warming massage which cleanses skin of toxins (cellulite) and gives it shine. SEPICALM VG – a botanic complex, contains a water lily extract. It hydrates, smooths skin, has protective and soothing effects, inhibits the effects of photo-ageing. SERUM – serum is a cosmetic with higher concentration of active substances; additionally, it is lighter than a cream. Serum can deeply hydrate, firm, normalize the work of sebaceous glands. It evens skin color and provides it with shine. It should be used in the morning and evening on cleansed face skin, under a cream or an algae / hydrolipid mask. Thanks to the concentrated formula, you only need to apply a small amount of serum on face, neck and neck line. SHEA BUTTER / Karite butter – oil of the charmingly named African Butyrospermum Parkii tree (which has been considered holy and worshipped for thousands of years there). The oil has a form of hard, whitish butter lamps (hence its name) which need to be warmed in hands to obtain the proper oil consistency. It is a natural sun filter (cinnamic acid). The properties of Shea butter: regenerates and nourishes skin, contains vitamins A and F which rejuvenate and protect skin against free radicals, has protective properties – protects skin from cold, wind and frost, smooths and enhances elasticity, is 100% safe.

TREHALOSE – a natural sugar with a very strong hydro active effect. It is present in plants, enables them to survive during droughts and brings them back to life after contact with water. It protects skin against dehydration (provides tissues with water, reduces the effect of dryness) and adverse effects of the environment. An ecological raw material, in line with Ecocert standards. TRIKENOLTM – manuka (Leptospermum Scoparium – a bush native to New Zealand) concentrate (oil) and willow (Salix Alba) extract. Besides antibacterial properties, it also has prebiotic effects; thanks to that, it protects skin and maintains the balance of bacterial flora. It inhibits the growth of bacteria which adversely influence skin and does not influence skin-friendly bacteria at the same time. UREA – an NMF ingredient. It maintains hydration and proper permeability of stratum corneum. It enables penetration of active ingredients. It has softening effects. WAKAME ALGAE – have nourishing, firming and anti-stretch-mark effects. WHITE TEA – created from the youngest leaves, a strong anti-oxidant. WITCH HAZEL – has astringent properties and prevents irritation. VEGETABLE GLYCERIN – is an irreplaceable ingredient of cosmetic preparations, especially the ones recommended for dry, cracked skin. It is used in the cosmetic industry, can also be a solvent, emollient (softens epidermis) and a moisturizer. Used in a proper concentration and at a proper air humidity, it hydrates epidermis – absorbs moisture from the environment and binds it in stratum corneum for 24 hours. It also provides preparations with a proper texture (smoothness), constitutes a stabilizer (improves consistency). VITAMIN A – retinoids include a number of chemical compounds, some of which are determined as vitamin A. It is obtained from animals as retinol (cod-liver oil, milk, egg yolk) and from plants – as vitamin A (carrot, spinach, lettuce), i.e. beta-carotene. It has anti-ageing effects – skin treated with vitamin A becomes smooth, soft, has a better color, increases the activity of fibroblasts and, thus, improves the condition of the connective tissue of dermis – influences elasticity and firmness of the skin. 89.
VITAMIN C – a natural antioxidant, seals and strengthens vascular walls, supports the process of production and regeneration of collagen. It gently brightens. VITAMIN E – also known as the “vitamin of youth”, is one of the most important scavengers of free radicals responsible for the early skin ageing. It is only present in plants (corn, avocado, sunflower, flaxseed oil, wheat germs, green peas, nasturtium). It can also be obtained by way of chemical synthesis. Vitamin E absorbed by the epidermis improves the water balance of epidermis and dermis, improves softness and elasticity, strengthens connective tissue. YARROW – soothes irritation and inflammations. It accelerates regeneration of micro-damages, additionally cleanses skin. XERADINTM – an active complex of natural origin, contains clary sage extract. It belongs to the group of xerophilous plants, which is why it has developed a series of adaptations to cope with the lack of water and survive. Thanks to that, it has developed structures and functions that enable reduction and delay of water loss. Xeradin contains high amounts of flavonoids, triterpenes, phenolic acids, essential oils and saccharides. It is perfect for dry and dehydrated skin. It provides a strong and immediate, 24-hour hydration effect, even after the first application. Xeradin influences the improvement of skin barrier functions. The in-vivo tests showed a progressive hydration increase in the first three hours after the application. After three hours, hydration was at the level of 114%, after 24 hours – 38%, when compared with solvents.
