Great Horned Owls do not assemble their own nests. Instead, they take over vacant nests left by other birds. The mother owl normally lays two to three eggs in their nest and they sit on them for a month or so. The hatchlings feed, grow and live for another 28 years.

The American Bison should not be confused with the buffalo. The biggest difference between both of them is that the bison is found only in North America and the buffalo is found in Asia and Africa. Another difference is that the buffalo has very short hair and the bison has longer hair as well as the bison being larger in size as compared to the buffalo.

Around 1800, Bighorn Sheep existed in the millions, but by the 1900s there were very few left. The reasons for the decline were diseases from domestic sheep, along with competition for food with domestic sheep, and hunting or killing to make room for the domesticated sheep. In the 1930s the Boy Scouts started a campaign to save them in Arizona because it was hardest hit and the sheep were at the brink of extinction there.

Timber Wolves are also known as Grey Wolves and as a norm, if a wolf is confronted by a person, it will run away. Wolves play a very important role in keeping the population of small animals in control. Currently there is a decreasing number of Timber Wolves due to human expansion which is causing an overpopulation of some small animals in places where Timber Wolves have already disappeared.

The American Bald Eagle is the only eagle unique to North America. An eagle’s eye is almost as large as a human eye, but its sharpness is at least four times that of a person with perfect vision. Eagles also do not sweat, so they use cooling methods such as perching in the shade, panting, as well as holding their wings up away from their body.

The Fisher is sometimes referred to as a “Fisher Cat and is part of the weasel family. Their diet consists of rabbits and porcupines. In the early 20th century, Fishers were trapped almost to extinction. When this happened, the porcupine population was out of control and did major forest damage. Keep in mind that every animal serves a purpose.

Raccoons are commonly referred to as “masked bandits. They are omnivorous but they eat just about anything. While their diet consists of fruits and fish, just about anything in the garbage will do just fine for them too. They are normally notorious for being nocturnal garbage raiders. Believe it or not, many dog deaths are recorded due to raccoon encounters.

While the Columbia Black-tailed Deer has been rumored to be cousin to the Mule Deer and White-tailed Deer, recent DNA evidence shows that Mule Deer are actually the result of interbreeding between whitetails and blacktails. The Black-tailed Deer can eat a wide variety of plants. They can even eat Poison Oak without experiencing any of the allergic reactions like humans experience.
