{Why We’re Here } Ladies and Gentlemen, Cowboys and Cowgirls, Colts and Fillies: Welcome to my home! This house was originally built in 1947 and was surrounded by 20 acres of eucalyptus-bordered alfalfa at the corner of Tampa and Superior, now known as the “Devonshire Highlands.” I am told that Maxine, one of the Andrews Sisters, lived here; and with Lucille Ball as Honorary Mayor, I can only imagine some of the parties that were hosted in the area! Picture the “Hollywood Hoedown” annual fundraiser where Clark Gable and Mary Pickford were dressed to the nines, Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin got the party started by passing out cigars and martinis and Bob Hope worked the crowd to “ante up” for “the cause.” They were dressed in their finest “Denim and Diamonds,” kicking up their heels to benefit a couple of local youth organizations for children who didn’t have the benefit of schooling and were in need of a safe place for tutoring and recreation. Fast forward to 2006: The property, now an acre in size, was in sore need of a “facelift.” I had recently met with the local Chamber of Commerce President, Wayne Adelstein. He learned of my love for kids, their happiness and well-being and introduced me to Lorraine New, Board President of the Police Activities League Supporters. They were fundraising to build a new youth center and “Ding!”— I found my niche! I remodeled my property with benefits and fundraisers in mind. After 4 more years of fundraising efforts, including our annual Monte Carlo Night, the brand new Greig Smith LAPD Devonshire Youth Center is fully operational and is providing new opportunities for at-risk youth in our community. With that mission complete, I was encouraged to “spread the love” and with a little research, I discovered that our own local Boys & Girls Club of the West Valley was very much aligned with PALS in their mission to help children. I was very impressed with their programs and results as well as their supporters, so when I heard their funding could use a boost (in these tougher times), it seemed like a perfect union. First fulltime president and CEO, Jan Sobel, and I met and we hit it off immediately. In today’s world our children are more challenged than ever. They are pulled in many directions and have numerous distractions that prevent them from achieving their goals in life. With the influence of gangs, illiteracy, drugs, crime, etc., our children need guidance and support more than ever. With both Devonshire PALS and the Boys & Girls Club of the West Valley, we can provide many opportunities for these young people to do better in life than if left alone. The many programs offered are free to those who are interested and many of them succeed at becoming better and more productive human beings and come back to volunteer at the same organizations that nurtured them. I love helping children. They are our future. They need us to help and to guide them—to set a good example. The bottom line is: Don’t you feel better knowing that YOU made a difference because of your participation in this fun evening? Yeah, me too! So thank YOU for being here and caring for the kids. My best,

Nancy
