2009 Daniel Negreanu
Daniel Negreanu had dreams of a career in acting or comedy. At the age of 15, he learned how to play poker. As a 16 year-old he spent his time in pool halls, hustling, sports betting and playing cards. Daniel dropped out of high school several credits shy of graduating and began life as a rounder playing at the local charity casinos and looking for illegal games. In December 2005, he started his own online poker cardroom “skin” site on his official site, Full Contact Poker. This site also includes his blog and a variety of poker forums. He has written over 100 articles for CardPlayer Magazine and contributed to Doyle Brunson’s revised book, Super System II. Negreanu won his fourth WSOP bracelet in 2008, in the $2000 buyin limit hold’em event.

2009 Gus Hansen
Gustav Hansen was born just outside Copenhagen, Denmark. He is a professional danish poker player living in Monaco. His poker career includes winning a record three World Poker Tour open titles, the 2007 Aussie Millions main event and was the season one winner of the Poker Superstars Invitational Tournament. Prior to taking a turn as a poker player, Hansen was a world class backgammon player and also a youth tennis champion. After moving to New York City in 2000 to pursue professional backgammon, he felt the field in backgammon was too small to continue an interest so he is now a professional poker player.

2009 Noah Boeken
Like so many of the young tournament poker pros, Noah first meddled with strategy in the card game Magic: The Gathering (MTG). He was one of the world’s best players of MTG but when he figured out he could make a lot more money playing poker he switched card games. His online play began in 2001 and he was able to have immediate success in weekly tournaments. He soon met Marcel Luske who is a popular poker player and also the individual who is Boeken’s mentor to this day. Since then, Noah has not looked back. He has spent several years acquiring a large bankroll from online tournaments and cash games. He’s also played in live tournaments and done very well with them.

2009 Tom Dwan
Tom Dwan’s online name is “durrrr” and he is known as one of the best online poker players. He’s a 21 year-old college dropout from New Jersey and he has become one of the biggest cash game players in a very short amount of time. In an interview with Arthur Crowson when Dwan was playing at Foxwoods in 2007, Dwan said, “My iPod died like two hours ago and I want to shoot someone. Without an iPod I play so bad. It helps so much. I mean Day 1 I had a fun table and the people were nice but if you’re at a table where people are bitter because they don’t have chips and they get angry when you re-raise them it gets really, really annoying without an iPod. Music really helps. He is rumoured to have made over $2,000,000 playing high stakes poker online. As of 2008, his total live tournament winnings exceed $950,000.

2009 Erick Lindgren
During the World Poker Tour’s second season, he captured the first Player of the Year honor with his two victories. He was raised in the remote town of Burney, CA in the Sierra Nevada range near Mt. Shasta. When attending junior college to play basketball, he became sidetracked after playing recreationally at an Indian casino. This led to a job as a blackjack dealer where he was able to pick up some poker skills. By the age of 21 he was playing poker full-time and working at a casino in San Pablo, California as a “propositional player” — this type of player is hired to keep games lively. Lindgren is the author of the book, World Poker Tour: Making the Final Table. His book covers strategy for playing in poker tournaments.

Madsen was raised in Los Angeles and went to college at the University of California, Santa Barbara to study film theory. Madsen became the youngest ever World Series of Poker bracelet winner in 2006. He won his first bracelet only one month and nine days after his 21st birthday and he was about six weeks younger than the previous record holder. Less than a week later, he broke another record and became the youngest two-time bracelet winner. His record was broken in 2007 for youngest ever winner, but he still holds the 2-bracelet record.
