ounded as gold mining towns during the 1849 gold rush, Big Oak Flat and Groveland both experienced the boom and bust that was typical of the mining towns of the age. While they each may have lost the miners that built the towns, they held onto the history and beauty that continue to make them both picturesque and historical parts of California’s Gold Country. With Yosemite just to the East for day trips, the region is the perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of city life. Highway 120, California’s most direct and scenic route to Yosemite National Park is itself a wonderful destination with many attractions that are open year round. Highway 120 winds through rolling hills dappled with heritage oaks, past picturesque small towns where Gold Rush history was made and upward to the dramatic high country with commanding views of the majestic Sierra Nevada. Open to Yosemite Valley all year, Highway 120 is the widest and shortest route into the park from all of Northern California. Now with three pay stations at the entrance gate, Highway 120, the Big Oak Flat Road, is also the quickest route into the park during even the busiest summer days. Opportunities abound to leave the fast lane behind and relish the slower pace of a bygone era along Highway 120. Hike inspiring wilderness trails, fish crystalline wild trout streams, raft the challenging rapids of the beautiful Tuolumne River, explore charming gold mining towns with colorful pasts. At the end of the day, settle into inviting accommodations at wilderness campgrounds, modern motels or historic inns, and enjoy pizza, country fare or 4-star cuisine. Come, Stay & Play in the beauty and majesty that is Gold Country and Yosemite. You won’t want to leave!

The Old Groveland Jail The jail was built around 1895. While it was well used, especially for those held for public drunkenness, the jail was seldom ever locked. Since there was no full-time jailer, the doors were left unlocked so that in the event of a fire the jail’s occupant could escape confinement. If you’re wondering, “What about the violent criminals?” Well, most violent offenders never made it to the jail. There’s a reason that the town’s original name was Garrotte (The name for the knot tied in the hangman’s noose.) The jail currently serves as the center piece of the civic gardens.

Yosemite is celebrating its 120th Birthday from October 2010 thru September 2011?

That’s right, Yosemite is 120 years old. In 1889, America’s best-known conservationist, John Muir, along with Century Magazine editor, Robert Underwood Johnson, launched a movement to persuade Congress to set aside the area that is now Yosemite as a national park in 1890. Due to their successful efforts the U.S. Congress set aside nearly 1,200 square miles of forest land on October 1, 1890. This preserve is now known as Yosemite National Park.

Yosemite travel tips

May to October 1. Start Early: For Yosemite Valley destinations, you will find the most tranquility as well as best lighting for photo opportunities early in the morning or late afternoon or evening. 2. Take a Break: Avoid concession lines by picking up a picnic lunch and film before you arrive at the valley floor. Stop and enjoy the historic places and beautiful scenery along the way. Get everything you need for your trip into the park in Groveland. 3. Do Something Really Different: Yosemite is quite spectacular at night. Try stargazing at Glacier Point or perhaps take a moonlight tour of the valley floor. Enjoy a leisurely day hike in the peaceful setting of the Hetch Hetchy area, or enjoy a quick walk around town with the Groveland Historic Walking Tour map. 4. Plan Ahead: Make your reservations early. Area rooms fill fast. Call 1-800-4HWY-120 (1-800-449-9120) to find lodging and camping along Highway 120. Or go to the YCC website at: www.YosemiteChamberofCommerce.com 5. Save Money: Purchase souvenirs from shops outside the park. Many shops offer unique collections of native items as reminders of your trip and can save you valuable vacation dollars.

November to April 6. Plan for the Weather: Between October and June, wet weather is a possibility. Conditions change quickly. Stay dry, carry some sort of foul weather gear, carry chains (even 4WD’s). Chains are available to purchase from many retailers along Highway 120. Call (209) 372-0200 for road conditions. 7. Autumn in Yosemite: Some of the best hiking and sightseeing is found along the Tioga and Glacier Point corridors. Beautiful fall color displays begin in early September through November at these higher elevations.

8. Learn Something New: Try the Ranger-led snowshoe hike. Experience ice skating while enjoying the spectacular view of Half Dome. Chase away the winter blues by soaking up some rays in Groveland where the claim to fame is “above the fog & below the snow.” Highway 120 is open all year to Yosemite Valley. 9. Avoid the Crowds: Because there aren’t any! The seasons of Fall, Winter and Spring are the most mystifying because you have the mountains to yourself. Even the peak of the Summer isn’t crowded outside of the most popular areas of the Park, where the lodgings and other facilities are located. With nearly 1,200 square miles, the vast majority of the Park is always serene and secluded. 10. Bundle Up: Late Fall through early Spring, mid-day temperatures average 40º to 50º in Yosemite Valley, but can vary widely. Overnight lows are below freezing regularly. Dress in multiple layers so that you can adapt to temperature changes. 11. Slow Down: Stop and take advantage of the scenic turnouts in Yosemite. Enjoy streams, woods, meadows and wildlife throughout the valley. Roll down windows as you drive so that you can hear the waterfalls.

Yosemite at a Glance Established: October 1, 1890 Land Area: About 1,189 Square Miles Lowest/Highest Elevations: 4,315 at valley floor; 13,114 Mt. Did you know…

E

Groveland was not the town’s original name? Groveland started off as Savage’s Diggins, named for the first miner to stake a claim here. The town then became known as Garrotte. A garrotte is the knot tied in a noose to hasten the death of a hanged man when the fall distance is not great enough. Groveland was a true frontier town, complete with “frontier justice.” As a matter of fact, what’s left of the old hangman’s tree can be seen on old Hwy 120 just a few miles east of town.

e

Did you know… There be ghosts in this here town?

E

That’s right, many visitors to Groveland’s historic inns have reported seeing and hearing ghosts. Several professional ghost investigators have come looking for our “passed” residents. Luckily, they’re all real friendly spirits.

E

Did you know Big Oak Flat was once the largest town in the area?

Big Oak Flat once boasted a population of over 15,000 residents, mostly miners and their families. After many wildfires and the gold deposits drying up, it nearly became a ghost town.

Hwy 120 is oldest operating road into Yosemite? It was completed in July of 1874 and quickly became the most popular route into Yosemite Valley. The first route, Coulterville Road, was completed a month earlier but went virtually unused and soon closed after the Big Oak Flat Road (Hwy 120) opened.
