Country Day Summer 2018 Dear Parents and Campers, There are several ways to enjoy the Country Day Summer program. Sign up for Camp Cavalier – either morning, afternoon or full-day – then add some classes from Cavalier Academy. Or, just select Cavalier Academy classes to fit your summer schedule. Please take some time to read through our Summer Schedule, then register with Smart Tuition and make your choices. Many of our classes fill up quickly! The Camp Cavalier program hires experienced and enthusiastic high school and college students, and Academy classes are most often taught by school-year teachers. Small groups and classes keep your child focused, happy, and challenged. Program activities and classes use most of the SCDS campus and there are days when the site is transformed into a jungle rain forest or ocean scene. Camp Cavalier off-campus trips transport our campers to the Arden Park Pool, Bounce U, and Country Club Lanes; and Cavalier Academy classes range from art and archaeology to makerspace, science, and sports. This is your child’s opportunity to polish skills, learn something new, make new friends, and increase his or her independence in a positive and healthy environment. We encourage our campers to have fun and embrace their day. My staff and I have done our job if your child refuses to leave camp, goes home dirty, or even sleeps through dinner! I have worked at SCDS for 17 years and Summer Camp is my favorite time of the year! I am fortunate to work with dedicated teachers and staff, hard-working counselors, and enthusiastic campers. POLICIES AND PROCEDURES REGISTRATION & INFORMATION

Registration for Summer Camp and classes begins online on Friday, March 23, 2018. All families will need a Smart Tuition account prior to registration. Camp Cavalier is available to K-5th grade students, and Cavalier Academy classes are available to incoming K-12th grade students.

RETURNING FAMILIES

Your Smart Tuition Summer Camp account will be set up as it was for Summer 2017 unless you contact the school to make changes. If you do not remember your login credentials for summer camp, go to parent.smarttuition.com. If you need assistance with your account, please contact Joy Pangilinan or Carol Wessels at Country Day. For families enrolled at SCDS during the school year, please note that this account is different from your school account; the Smart Tuition ID # for Summer is 13794.

NEW FAMILIES

New families are required to create an account for camp billing purposes by enrolling in Smart Tuition at https:// enrollwithsmart.com/#/enroll/41986. Once you have created your Smart Tuition account, you will be able to register for Summer classes and camp.

ENOLLMENT AND DEPOSITS

Starting on Friday, March 23, visit countrydaysummer.org to make your camp and class selections. Registration for a class and/or camp is online only. A $50 deposit is required to reserve your childâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s spot in each week of camp or class. Deposits are nonrefundable, except if the class is cancelled. The balance due will be billed and paid via your Smart Tuition Summer Camp account. Country Day Summer classes and camp are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. In the event the class you signed up for is full, you will be notified and placed on a waiting list. The Summer Director is responsible for making final decisions on a camperâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s enrollment and registration.

PAYMENT

Invoices for the remaining balance due for classes and camps will be handled by Smart Tuition. Payments will be due on the 20th of the month. Automatic payments can be set up with Smart Tuition. If you opt to be invoiced, you will receive a monthly statement via email. Payments can be made via the web, phone, mobile app, or by mail. All credit and debit card payments are subject to a 2.85% credit card convenience fee. Smart Tuition accepts ACH payments and checks without additional fees. Checks should be payable to Smart Tuition. Smart Tuition will charge a late fee of $40 if payments are not received on time.

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES CAMP GUIDELINES AND POLICIES

By enrolling your child(ren) in the SCDS Summer Program, you agree to the guidelines and policies of the Country Day Summer Program below. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Joy Pangilinan.

SIGN-IN/OUT PROCEDURES

Country Day Summer participants need to be signed in and out by a parent or guardian. Persons picking up a child must be 18 years of age or older with an I.D. and authorized by a designated person. If a parent or guardian is unable to sign out their campers, notify the Camp Director.

PHOTOGRAPHY PERMISSION

Unless a letter is written to the contrary, SCDS presumes that photos taken of campers may be used in the Summer Program brochure and other SCDS promotional materials.

DISCIPLINE POLICY

All participants have the right to enjoy a positive, healthy, and safe experience in the Country Day Summer Program. As part of this right, all students are expected to follow and support our expectations of participation, positive attitude, and respectful behavior at all times. Behavior or language perceived by the Summer Director and staff to be disrespectful, hurtful, unsafe, or threatening may result in camper’s suspension or dismissal from the program. This extends to any behavior that undermines our goal to best serve the needs of all our participants.

ALLERGY POLICY

Sacramento Country Day School values the safety of all of our community members and exercises some common sense precautions to support students who have specific allergies. Though we are not a nut-free school, we strive to make it safer for children and adults with food allergies to participate in the full range of activities available at school. The School’s Responsibilities We will educate the faculty and staff about allergies, signs and symptoms of allergy and anaphylaxis, and provide training on the use of epinephrine (Epi-Pens and other such devices). Each child with a known allergy will have an Allergy and Anaphylaxis Emergency Care Plan in the school and PE offices, and, for Lower School students, in their classroom. We will educate students and parents about allergies and appropriate precautions. Each faculty and staff member will be made aware of which children in their care have serious allergies. All emergency medication and Emergency Care Plans will be taken on field trips. It is a Lower School rule that children may not share or trade food with each other. We will inform other parents in the class or grade if a student’s allergy is so severe that particular items cannot be brought to school. The Family’s Responsibilities Provide a complete Allergy and Anaphylaxis Emergency Care Plan to the school office. Inform the school if your child’s allergy could be triggered by casual contact with the allergen (e.g. touch or inhalation rather than ingestion). If this is the case, more specific precautions will be implemented in your child’s classroom or grade to minimize the possibility of contact. Provide all proper medication for your child. Provide treats for your child to have on hand for birthdays or class parties. Children with known allergies may not eat food provided by others. If needed, treats may be stored in the refrigerator or freezer at school. CAMP CAVALIER (JUNE 18-AUGUST 3) CAMP CAVALIER

Camp Cavalier is for campers looking for long-term summer or for the occasional drop-in care. Camp Cavalier campers participate in a series of activities, workshops, presentations, weekly field trips, and more. Campers are placed in age-appropriate groups and are led through a series of activities by their camp counselors.

FOOD & DRESS CODE

There is no food service available on campus. Please send your camper with morning and afternoon snack, as well as a lunch. Please have participants come to camp in comfortable attire. Closed-toe shoes only; sneakers are preferred.

FIELD TRIPS

â&#x20AC;˘ On Tuesday afternoons, campers will leave at 1:00pm to swim at Arden Park Pool at 1000 La Sierra Drive, Sacramento. Please send your campers to camp with their bathing suit underneath their clothes. This will make the sunscreen session run smoothly and quickly. Sandals, sunscreen, and towels are needed. Students will be transported to the pool on the Sacramento Country Day school bus. â&#x20AC;˘ On Thursday afternoons throughout the summer, there are additional field trips. If you prefer your camper not attend a field trip, you must pick up your camper by 12:30pm on the scheduled field trip date. There is no camp available on campus during field trip days. On Thursdays, Camp Cavalier contracts with Natomas Unified School District for field trip transportation. Please do not send any additional spending money with campers on field trips; they will not be allowed to spend it on field trips. Field trips are subject to change. If a change occurs, no credits or refunds will be made.

FUNTASTIC FRIDAYS

Campers will need their bathing suits, towels, sandals, and sunscreen for waterslide and sprinkler fun.

This course introduces general biology themes while building upon the concepts introduced in chemistry. The major themes covered include cell biology, genetics, evolution, ecology, plant and animal physiology, and biodiversity. In addition to textbook learning, the class also focuses on daily laboratory work and learning how to apply the scientific method. Additionally, relevant current issues in the news media provide topics for discussion and debate. A year of chemistry is required before taking this class. This class is a UCcertified lab-science course.

This course incorporates the Harvard Business School case study method that aims to teach students by providing a more exciting, relevant and effective experience. Students will learn about key moments in the history of American Democracy. Students will be encouraged to be engaged and to think critically on the events that have shaped our Democracy today while also providing a unique opportunity to help reverse the broad decline in civic education in the United States.

This course introduces Coordinate Geometry (also known as Cartesian and Analytic Geometry) and Trigonometry to the student. It provides the basis for analysis, which in turn prepares students for analytical studies in physical and social sciences. As the name implies, the course is a pre-requisite for Calculus. Learn the different techniques and painting styles of master artists. Students will learn color theory, brush application, and different art genres, as well as complete a portfolio of work for display at a camp art show at the end of week two. We may get a little messy, but a fun time and relaxing environment are guaranteed.

This lively class encourages creative writing by utilizing fun writing prompts developed by students or assigned by the teachers. Students can experiment with fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. Experience is not necessary but a willingness to write is. We will incorporate improvisation, role-playing, and dramatic readings, which will provide opportunities to not only learn the art of storytelling but to see it in action.

Are you ready to join the Wizarding World of Harry Potter right here on the Country Day campus? In this class, we will be journeying out of the muggle world into a world of spells, crafts, creativity, art, quidditch, stories, fun, games, and of course, magic! We will discover our Hogwarts houses, make our own magic wands, learn spells and make our own, cook up “potions”, and so much more. Join your friends for a week of magical play and spellbinding good times. (Having read all books or seen all the movies is definitely not a requirement to join this class, although a few spoilers may occur.)

Ooze into action, manipulate matter and witness some radical reactions in this exciting chemistry-themed summer program. Did you know that you are witnessing a chemical reaction when you bake cookies? Or, that some of your favorite art supplies were created in a science lab? Learn to recognize chemical changes and mix ingredients together for some sensational results. Make your own ooey, gooey slime to take home! From proper use of equipment and lab safety to molecular structure and more, this innovative program explores the exciting world of basic chemistry! Grab your lab coat and let's head to the laboratory!

HOT OFF THE PRESS 3rd-8th | July 23-27 | 1-4 Instructor: Kristi Mathisen

The world moves at a mile a minute and the news never stops. What is news? Is it just politics? Or could it be food and culture? Entertainment? Sports? Join us as we take a deep dive into what it means to be a part of the news industry. We will study various forms of reporting, write articles and blogs, create a camp newspaper, and record on-the-scene coverage of an exciting event on campus. We will even take a field trip to a local news agency and see the news business in action. 9

MIDDLE SCHOOL CLASSES defense, confidence, health and fitness will be the focus of this class. Jiu Jitsu allows kids to develop a body and mind connection, and is an excellent way to build focus and techniques to help in self-defense situations. Jiu Jitsu is a sport where students are able to train with a team learning to work together, but allows them to focus on self-development and personal skills. Boxing skills will be incorporated; students will practice sparing with a bag.

This camp session focuses on the introduction and the exploration of instruments in the string family. This hands-on workshop will allow students to learn about the characteristics and playing techniques of each instrument. Students will love playing and hearing beautiful sounds from the violin, viola, and cello.

Improv is a great way for kids to be spontaneous, use their imaginations, and sharpen their minds. In this class we will explore those quirky thoughts through improv games and scene work. With the variety of hats and costumes offered, students can become anyone they like, and the fun begins.

You start with sticks and string and end up with a creation that is colorful, useful, or just plain cute. Learn a new hobby that is creative and relaxing (while developing fine motor skills, strengthening hand and eye coordination, practicing spatial and motor planning, and building pattern recognition and memory skills). Make gifts for friends and family or fun things to wear. This class will teach you basic knitting and crocheting skills. When camp is over, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll go home with some of the tools and knowledge to continue creating your own work. *Beginning to advance needle workers welcome.

Taste buds will travel around the world in International Cuisine. Along with cooking, students will learn about ingredients, history, and cultural significance related to food. Recipes and help in finding exotic ingredients will be given to students so they may share their creations at home.

The Makerspace is a place for kids to get creative and make things. Through everything from learning a new skill, like sewing, to building with wood scraps, kids learn to use creative and flexible thinking and problem solving. The Makerspace provides access to basic hand tools, art and craft supplies and tools, and recycled materials like cardboard and plastic. Students will be able to come up with their own ideas, find inspiration in the materials available, or play with resources set out each day intended to entice them to get messy and creative.

MIDDLE SCHOOL 101

Campers will participate in a variety of individual and team sports throughout the week. Students will also learn basic motor skills such as catching, running, and throwing that will be beneficial for all sports. We will also cover the basics of health and nutrition. Focus will be on stretching, hydrating, and healthy snacks. Finally, team building and communication games will be played to foster sportsmanship and teamwork. *Please note: this class will attend a field trip on the last day, Friday, July 20, 2018.

Middle School 101 is here to answer your middle school questions like, “how do you open a locker? “What’s with this rotating schedule? Where in the world is the Mathews Library? When is the first Middle School dance? During this weeklong camp, middle school students will engage in various activities to learn the ropes of Country Day Middle School. Campus scavenger hunts and demo lessons with faculty members will help students become familiar with the ins-and-outs of middle school. Activities on organization, materials management, and study tips will promote that budding independence and selfmanagement that middle school is all about. Plus, some good, traditional camp fun (tie-dying t-shirts, themed days, group games and more)! This camp is designed for both rising SCDS 6th graders and new SCDS 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. By having this shared experience of camp, students will come away with new friendships and connections that will last into the school year and beyond.

ROCKET SCIENCE

3rd-8th | June 18-22 | 9-Noon Instructor: Aleitha Burns

3-2-1 - Lift off! This camp focuses solely on rockets and rocket flight. From paper airplanes to air-powered rockets, from rubber-band-powered rockets to balloon-powered rockets, students will explore the mechanics of aerospace engineering in a fun, hands-on approach. They will better understand the four forces of flight (thrust, drag, lift, and gravity) through building, testing, and launching their own rockets. Students will take home their own rockets and an abundance of rocket knowledge. Become a real rocket scientist!

Looking to improve your photography skills? Come to this session, where we will learn the fundamentals of good photo taking. Aperture settings, shutter speed, and ISO will become part of your daily vocabulary. In class and on field trips, students will learn proper composition and, by using natural light, will hone their exposure skills. Students are expected to bring their own cameras, preferably with manual settings.

World building is designed for junior artists, writers, directors, or anyone with a grand imagination. What is world building? It is the process used for creating fictional worlds in books, movies, games, and art. We will cover the most successful fictional worlds and what makes them so popular. From there we break down every detail in the process of world creation. Students are then encouraged to design their own worlds using their favorite mediums. These projects are of their own choosing and could include short stories, paintings, sketches, comics, maps, or a combination.

VOLLEYBALL CAMP

Camp will be lead by varsity volleyball coach Sarah Song. Individual training, combined with team concepts, will get you in shape for your next season! The skills camp is designed to focus on all aspects of the game with an emphasis on fundamentals. Skills will be reinforced through repetition and performed throughout modified games. No matter what your current level is now, you will walk away from this camp more confident with your skills.

ARCHAEOLOGY

This summer, we will embark on an adventure of exploration and discovery. Using our skills and excavation tools, students will learn to observe, record, and hypothesize how and when the humans of the past collapsed or changed locations. Students will become young archaeologists on their own dig, discovering the treasures left behind and reconstructing the pieces to make educated guesses and stories of the past.

We will sing songs and do math and phonics activities along with art, a bit of cooking, and some dramatic play. Each day has a new theme, so students can sign up for one week or two. This class is a great way to calm the back-to-school jitters for incoming kindergartners!

Calling all nature-lovers! Do you love exploring plants and learning new things about them? This week you will become a plant scientist - a botanist! We will sort, count, and plant seeds. If you have a green thumb you will take home your own seedling. Our days will be filled with visits to the Country Day garden, dissecting fruits, observing how roots and stems do their jobs, and creating our own plant art. 13

In this class, students will get a jump-start on the academic year. They will meet both of the 2nd grade teachers and become familiar with the classroom. Fun reading and math activities and games will reinforce skills. This sneak peek will help children feel like experts and approach their first days of school with enthusiasm and confidence.

Dragon Fire Martial Arts is a blended art. The children will learn our “Run, Yell and Tell” self defense program designed to help children be more aware of their surroundings and how to help keep themselves safe while their independence grows. We’ll also learn the kicks and punches of taekwondo, the basic throws and falls of judo, and the basic pins of jujitsu. Our art stresses the tenets of the martial arts, which are Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self Control and Indomitable Spirit.

Calling all former Kindergarteners! Are you ready to put on your mask, tie your cape, and fly into First Grade?? This summer get a jump on your First Grade skills. The world moves at a mile a minute and the news never stops. What is news? Is it just politics? Or could it be food and culture? Entertainment? Sports? Join us as we take a deep dive into what it means to be a part of the news industry. We will study various forms of reporting, write articles and blogs, create a camp newspaper, and record a short on the scene coverage of an exciting event on campus. We will even take a field trip to a local news agency and see the news business in action.

Instructor Travis Holloman is a professional mixed martial artist and has been competing since 2013. Assistant instructor Katie Holloman is an amateur mixed martial artist as well an instructor for the youth program at Urijah Faber’s Ultimate Fitness. Selfdefense, confidence, health and fitness will be the focus of this class. Jiu Jitsu allows kids to develop a body and mind connection, and is an excellent way to build focus and techniques to help in self-defense situations. Jiu Jitsu is a sport where students are able to train with a team learning to work together, but allows them to focus on self-development and personal skills. Boxing skills will be incorporated; students will practice sparing with a bag.

Students from Kindergarten through third grade are invited to join us for a week of acting, singing, and dancing. We will present “Mama Don’t Allow,” a very funny Thacher Hurd story about saxophone-playing Miles and his Swamp Band who find a bevy of sharptoothed, long-tailed alligators who love to listen to their music. But little do Miles and his band know what the alligators plan for them at the close of their jubilant all-night ball! We will study the story, brainstorm about how to turn it into a play, learn our parts, create scenery and put together costumes, and present the play to our family and friends on Friday, July 13.

JR. ROBOTICS

Students will work as scientists, engineers, and designers. Through the investigation of simple and motorized machines, the use of gears and sensors, and programming their builds, students will learn the basics of physics and the concepts behind real machines. Children will be able to build the actual model out of LEGO ® bricks ,and program their models featuring working motors and sounds by using WEDO on our computers. Students will build a firm base of understanding from which to expand their robotics learning.

KNIT WITS

3rd-8th | June 18-22 | 1-4 Instructor: Christy Vail

You start with sticks and string and end up with a creation that is colorful, useful, or just plain cute. Learn a new hobby that is creative and relaxing (while developing fine motor skills, strengthening hand and eye coordination, practicing spatial and motor planning, and building pattern recognition and memory skills). Make gifts for friends and family or fun things to wear. This class will teach you basic knitting and crocheting skills. When camp is over, you’ll go home with some of the tools and knowledge to continue creating your own work. Beginning to advance needle workers welcome. 17

LOWER SCHOOL CLASSES through imaginative role-play and conversation. At the conclusion of this Chinese Summer Camp, campers will have learned several basic Chinese greetings and phrases, including numbers, animals, and action words.

MATH MAGICIANS

Math games, projects, and mini lessons will be used to refresh math brains during the summer. Throughout this week, foundational concepts will be reviewed and new concepts will be previewed through days surrounding measurement, geometry, fractions, math of ancient civilizations, and problem solving as math detectives.

MAKERSPACE

The Makerspace is a place for kids to get creative and make things. Through everything from learning a new skill, like sewing, to building with wood scraps, kids learn to use flexible thinking and problem solving. The Makerspace provides access to basic hand tools, art and craft supplies and tools, and recycled materials like cardboard and plastic. Students will be able to come up with their own ideas, find inspiration in the materials available, or play with resources set out each day intended to entice them to get messy and creative.

Students participating in this educational and funfilled Chinese Summer Camp will be immersed in a comprehensive five-day course. The small group format of just six students to one teacher ensures that each child receives personalized attention throughout the duration of the camp.
